house than actual windows, the dead Christmas tree, and getting shafted on Christmas presents. Somehow, the eternally young-looking star finds humor in enduring the worst Christmas has to offer. “It’s like Bad Santa meets fried bologna sandwiches,” says May of his current tour. That's Ralphie May in a nutshell; even his publicity materials get right to the piont: “This is the real Ralphie May, no fakes no gimmicks, just straight 400 pounds of sexiness.” It's the comic's blunt honesty mixed with pure silliness that has made him a favorite all

over the country, beginning with his appearances on the first season of “Last Comic Standing” to his series of high-rated Comedy Central and Netflix comedy specials. It seems audiences can't get enough of this larger-than-life comedy star. May fell in love with comedy after

performing at a church conference at age 13, and winning unexpected rewards. He turned professional at 17 when he opened for Sam Kinison after winning a contest as a dual-enrollment student at the University of Arkansas. “He told me to move to Houston,” May said, “so I didn’t wait till graduation. I just left: ‘I’m going to Houston to do standup.’ And that was 25 years ago. It’s crazy.” May has a rare ability to be able to balance boyish charm, withering introspection, and compassion for his fellow human beings with some of the dirtiest, most honest observations ever delivered in comedy. “When I was a kid, my grandmother taught me how to crochet and how to quilt, and that’s kind of how I do an act,” May said. “I have one-liners, I have dirty jokes, but I also have long stories that are 10 or 20 minutes long and the laughs come every eight seconds. It’s a different set. And it’s a different life than most people have led.” For more information about Ralphie May: Ralphiemay.com, or find him at Facebook.

It’s another lost season for New York Jets QB Eugene Cyril “Geno” Smith, who tore the ACL in his right knee during a rare victory against the Baltimore Ravens last month. This follows last season, when he angered then-teammate line-

backer I.K. Enemkpali during training camp, when he taunted him after welching on repaying on a $600 debt. Enemkpali Geno broke Smith’s jaw with a Smith roundhouse right, and from all accounts few of Smith’s teammates were upset about the fracas. Former head coach Rex Ryan rewarded Enemkpali by signing him for The Buffalo Bills as soon as the Jets cut him loose. It’s almost certain that Smith has taken his last snap as a Jet; Smith was drafted by former general manager John Idzik, and thus current GM Mike Maccagnan likely has no loyalty to his injured quarterback. New York Giants CEO John Mara took some grief for keeping place kicker Josh Brown on his team as long as he did after reports surfaced that Brown had physically abused his wife. O'Grady's Day: Matt O’Grady of Rahway, New Jersey won the $5,000 top prize at the fourth annual Sandy Catalano Open on November 6 at Herrill Lanes in New Hyde Park. O'Grady defeated Justin Warhol of Sound Beach 268-200, in the championship match. Warhol earned $2,500 for his runner-up finish. In an event that featured many of the finest bowlers from this region, O'Grady left no doubt about his dominance during the high-scoring weekend with his letter-perfect final game. “I knew that a lot of my opponents were playing to the right, so I knew there was going to be a lot of friction,” said O'Grady, a pro shop owner in Rahway, about his success throughout the tourney on the USBC White #2 oil pattern. “I wanted to continue being further left than my opponents and that would give me some hold down the lanes, hook to the right. I had a great ball reaction with my Storm Phase II that just came out about a month ago … Luckily, I'm a little bit higher rev, I was able to move in, get the ball to shape the proper way to carry the corner pins.” O'Grady also shot a 300 game in the second round of the finals. The two-day scratch event finished with a top four step-ladder finals. A lot has been written about the NFL’s ratings, down during the first half of the season. Pundits cited the Colin Kaepernick national anthem brouhaha; the bad off-field behavior of some players, including Ray Rice and Brown; and interest in the Presidential election drawing viewers to CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC. While there is some grain of truth to those factors, the real one that the NFL has seen a slippage in interest is one of the golden rules of economics: The law of diminishing marginal returns. There are too many games that fans can watch during each week. The Thursday night package rarely features compelling games, and more often than not pits two teams in the same division against each other; fans tend to be drawn to games where opposing teams don’t face each other often. It also hasn’t helped that most of those games have turned out to be blowouts. Even Sundays aren’t that special now that the NFL has added games in London; those games begin at 9:30 am here, and that means that one can watch the NFL from almost breakfast through bedtime. managed to cut the deficit to three points in the final moments of the game before succumbing 122117. The Nets sent a message to the NBA that they will fight to the end in spite of their paucity of talent.

Yoenis Cespedes

Congratulations to Herb Turetzky, who begins his 50th season as the official scorer for the Nets. He has been with the team since its start in Teaneck in 1967.

Longtime SNY personality Chris Carlin, a cohost on the long-running sports debate show “Loudmouths,” has left the station and the New York market. Carlin has joined the Philadelphia sports talk radio station WIP, where he will co-host the afternoon drivetime show with former Eagles player Ike Reese. My guess for the future: WIP is owned by CBS Radio – as is WFAN, where Carlin worked for years before joining SNY. Mike Francesa will be leaving his afternoon show on “The FAN” on December 15, 2017. If you connect the dots, it would seem that CBS Radio executives are sending Carlin down the New Jersey Turnpike to do battle with those rabid Delaware Valley sports fans in preparation for succeeding Francesa. Time will tell. John “The Bird” Crowe has returned to host a Tuesday night radio sports show on WICC (600 on the AM dial) weekly at 7 pm; it can be heard in many parts of Queens and Long Island (and also by logging on to WICC600.com). Crowe runs a freewheeling show and he engages callers with respect and humor. It is rare that an athlete who wasn’t a superstar in his sport pens a memoir, but that is the case with Ralph Terry, who has written Right Down The Middle (Mullerhaus Legacy). Terry was a star relief pitcher for The New Yankees in the early 1960s, and delivers some great Billy Martin and Casey Stengel stories as well as many about fabled teammates Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, and Whitey Ford. Terry holds the distinction of being one of the first players to have worn both a Yankees and New York Mets uniform. A

little-known fact is that it was Terry who taught Tug McGraw the screwball. Many baseball players fancy themselves as golfers, including the Mets’ Yoenis Cespedes – but few test themselves against the best on the planet. After Terry’s baseball career ended following his release from the Mets, he joined the PGA Tour and later The Senior Tour, where he was successful. Terry remains close friends with Jack Nicklaus.

Betcha Didn't Know: We never dreamed: Forbes, the esteemed business publication, covers professional wrestling, at least on its website. The finance bible's website published a pair of columns about WWE and TNA; in one of the stories, which WWE touted on its October 3 edition of “Monday Night Raw” on USA Network, Forbes c ontributor Brian Mazique cited wrestler Charlotte (the daughter of longtime star Ric Flair) as “The Greatest Female WWE Superstar Of All Time.” While we find the coverage of “sport entertainment” by such a legendary magazine name as pleasing as it is surprising, most new wrestling writers’ knowledge base only seems to extent to the late 1980s; citing the relative newcomer Charlotte, as talented as she is, as the best women's grappler ever is a slight to pioneers such as Mildred Burke, The Fabulous Moolah, and even more recent stars such as Victoria and Trish Stratus – it's only jumping the gun about a half-decade too soon … Speaking of wrestling, the last remaining newsstand magazine covering the mat sport – Pro Wrestling Illustrated, founded by Stanley Weston in Freeport and later published in Rockville Centre – is now available for Amazon's Kindle tablets … Serious cinema junkies, take heed: The Art Of Selling Movies, a hardcover book that provides a never-before-seen look at how the hearts, minds, and wallets of moviegoers were won in Hollywood's “Golden Age,” is set for release on February 28 through GoodKnight Books. In The Art Of Selling Movies, lifelong film enthusiast and historian John McElwee reveals the colorful history of American film advertising from the silents through the mid-1960s, and makes a compelling case for how this once-thriving industry continues to influence American culture today. Unlike other classic film interest books, The Art Of Selling Movies shifts the spotlight away from great directors and iconic stars in favor of who the author terms as the “faceless folk”: Theatre operators, advertisers, and artists who awoke desire for movies in the masses. The book is a full-color, 300-plus page hardcover featuring hundreds of never-before-seen images and clippings (painstakingly restored using technology that has only made such restoration possible in the past decade); McElwee also explores the intersection of commercialism, folk art, fine art, newspaper production, and regional demographics … Rich Estra's Music Business Registry – a favorite among music business retailers, musicians, writers, publications, and serious fans for more than two decades – recently changed its name to Music Business Watch. A Gopsel According To Jazz Christmas: Five Years Strong At Madison Theatre

The fifth annual “A Gospel According To Jazz Christmas” concert featuring superstar saxophonist Kirk Whalum returns on Saturday, November 26 for two shows at 4 and 6 pm at The Madison Theater at Molloy College in Rockville Centre in a show presented Kirk by Event Navigation in Whalum association with Alan Stein. Tickets are now available; log on to madisontheatreny.com, or call (516) 323-4444. Returning to Madison Theatre thanks to their successful performances in past years, Whalum this season brings along guitarist and Grammy winner) Norman Brown as well as the worldrenowned pianist Keiko Matsui; special guests Kevin Whalum, John Stoddart, and Shelea are also on the bill. Forged from his Memphis gospel roots and his 1980s initiation into the thriving Houston nightclub scene, Whalum’s big, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. He soon formed his own band, earning Grammy nominations and national praise along the way. His career high point is his hit Warner Bros. Album, perhaps the most successful of more than 25 solo recordings to date. Others include his eclectic and much lauded,Gospel According to Jazz series Chapters 1, 2, 3 and 4). That's not all that Whalum has accomplished in his storied life: Also an ordained minister, Whalum has earned a Masters of Art in Religion. He's earned three Dove Award nominations, an NAACP Image Award nomination, and Keiko has won two Stellar Awards, gospel Matsui music’s highest honor.

Included on Setzer's new effort are new tunes such as "Drive Like Lightning (Crash Like Thunder)," as well as classic hits from his Stray Cats days, Brian Setzer Orchestra tunes, and tracks from his solo albums. In front of a wildly enthusiastic audience, Setzer and his band – Noah Levy (drums), Kevin McKendree (piano and guitar), and Mark Winchester (bass) – fire on all cylinders. "This is the first time we've recorded the Rockabilly Riot on film," said Setzer. "And also, just like in America, the cities differ in Japan. The Osaka fans are noted for generally being a very loyal and energetic audience. As you'll see from the show, the Osaka fans are diehard and know every single song, and applaud after guitar solos, and even sing along to songs that I typically don't see in other cities." Setzer and his 19-piece The Brian Setzer Orchestra just began a tour that will visit 32 cities as part of their 13th annual "Christmas Rocks! Tour," presented by SiriusXM, that will feature music off their latest Christmas album, Rockin' Rudolph (available now as a limited edition box set, CD, vinyl or download) plus music off their three previous

best-selling holiday albums. Naturally, this tour will come home to The NYCB Theatre At Westbury on Sunday, November 27; tickets are at ticketmaster.com and via thetheatreatwestbury.com; learn more about the legendary guitarist at briansetzer.com. For the few who may not know: The iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist, and three-time Grammy-award-winner is a musician who has been credited with continually taking chances with innovative and daring musical styles, while singlehandedly resurrecting two forgotten genres of music (rockabilly in the '80s and swing in the '90s). Along the way, Setzer has scored chart-topping hits, sold 13 million records, and received The Orville H. Gibson Lifetime Achievement Award throughout his decorated career as founder and leader of The Stray Cats, his 19-piece The Brian Setzer Orchestra, and as a solo artist. He is consistently cited as one of the world's greatest living guitarists and has a best-selling, extensive line of elite Gretsch signature model guitars bearing his name. Setzer appeared in the 1987 film, La Bamba, portraying rockabilly pioneer Eddie Cochran. In 2002, Setzer earned the privilege of being one of the few musicians to be animated in an episode of "The Simpsons." That same year, Setzer was requested to induct Chet Atkins into the 17th annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 2014, Setzer received the honor of being asked by The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. to donate a replica of his original 1959 Gretsch 6120 "Stray Cat" guitar, joining an elite collection of musical instruments at the museum, including Dizzy Gillespie's trumpet and John Coltrane's saxophone.

Get Strüng: During the course of the past decade, the Long Island-based rock group Blameshift has become one of the hardest-touring (and most popular) acts ever to hail from the area. Now, the group's lead singer, Jenny Mann, is conquering another pursuit: One of the most unique jewerly concepts ever as as well as one that both musicians and their followers are pretty much going crazy about. “In July of 2014 while traveling to play The Vans Warped Tour with my band, Blameshift, an idea was born,” recalled Mann. “While my guitarist Tim (Barbour) was changing his guitar strings for a show, I noticed that his strings, when wrapped up in a circular fashion, resembled a bracelet. I had seen these strings

bracelet at a Blameshift show in Clifton, New Jersey,” continued Mann. “That same night, we completely sold out of every bracelet I had

laying around the bus for years, but it wasn’t until this particular moment that Tim and I realized that we could actually use guitar strings for another purpose. With a little creativity, time and a whole lot of love, we created Strüng. “In mid-July, we sold our first Strüng

made, and I rushed to make more for our show the next night. We were so excited. Pretty soon, our fans were buying more bracelets than CDs and T-shirts, and I was spending hours after every show

handcrafting these one-of-a-kind bracelets. Fans from all over the country were coming to shows telling us that our bracelets were bringing them good luck, and most of all made them happy. “As the demand for Strüng continued to rise, we realized we had created something truly special that touched people deeper than an ordinary piece of jewelry.” Indeed, Mann and Barbour have started a movement that shows no signs of abating: Strüng's product line looks and feels like authentic rock artifacts, all while being stylish and attractive. The product line now includes bracelets and necklaces (available in individual pieces as well as in collections), all reasonably priced, particularly for the jewelry world. Rockers, take heed: Soon, Strüng will debut artist collections endorsed by some of the biggest names in rock. One glace at the Strüng collection reveals a simple truth: This jewelry one of the most perfect concepts in rock wear ever devised – they’re baubles that make a statement without veering into either kitsch or corn. One glance at our photos should convince you of that. In short: Need the perfect holiday gifts for music lovers in your life? Learn all about it at getstrung.com.

It all started with a seed of an original idea: One of Long Island's most lauded entertainment professionals looked around and saw a wealth of talent throughout the area, and believed it was high time to give that same talent a time to shine: “We’re looking to do a talent search and Rick Morgan & Gary Smith show – old school, somewhat like vaudeville,” said Gary Smith of New York Entertainment Club; he’s well known for his long stint at The Brokerage, one of the area’s top comedy and music venues. “The

An In-Depth Look At The Hottest Area Artists

Costello’s Flying Circus

The Ultimate Elvis Tribute Takes Off

Who: Costello’s Flying Circus may be one of the hundreds of tribute bands plying their trades throughout this region, but this is one with a difference: It’s the first band we’ve heard of in any region tackling the diverse sounds of British legend Elvis Costello. The band consists of John Qualls (lead vocals, guitars), Tom DeRenzo (drums), Dan Ehrlich (bass), and Larry Ketchell (piano and keyboards); the group, not around all that long, has already headlined many of the area’s top music venues, including K.J. Farrell's in Bellmore, The Space At Westbury Theater, and the swank Founder’s Room at The Paramount in Huntington. If you’re curious, it’s already been proven at recent shows that Costello’s Flying Circus has the ability to perform songs from every phase of Elvis Costello’s career – and fans rave that no two shows are ever alike, yet filled with hit after hit. This is a tribute band that actually accepts fans’ requests to hear their favorite tunes. The Artists & Their Sound: From the band’s offical bio: “Costello's Flying Circus performs a comprehensive anthology of the music of Elvis Costello, playing all of the hits, fan favorites, and dozens of thoughtfully selected deep cuts from a wildly diverse song catalog. Costello belongs to a rarified group of artists who have enjoyed continued artistic growth and consistent musical output year after year since he exploded onto the music scene in 1977. As a celebration of this formidable body of work, these veteran musicians have undertaken the challenge as no other performance group anywhere, ever has done: to perform a compendious retrospective of Elvis' music from 1977 to the present. Their performances are determined, highly spirited, passionate, and polished, inspiring energy and overflowing with heart and soul.” More from the bio: “Every live show features a large rotating song list from which the band builds each set, every show is unique from the last ... If you're already a fan of Elvis Costello, the search to hear the music performed live in your area is over. Since the group performs so much of the catalog, dedicated fans enjoy a rewarding performance – and if you're new to the music, prepare for a real surprise.” To Learn More About & Contact The Artists: For bookings: (516) 512-4463; find the group at Facebook. Upcoming shows including a concert on Friday, December 2 at 7 pm at The Huntington Library.
