Long gone are the days of long lines for perfunctory ballpark food – today, Citi Field may very well be the best restaurant in New York City, buoyed by an array of gourmet purveyors such as Union Square Hospitality Group (creators of longtime City favorites Shake Shack and El Verano Taqueria, and now Papa Rosso and its gourmet individual pizzas), Pat LaFrieda, Rao’s, Myraid Restaurant Group, and many more. David Newman, the Mets’ senior vice president of marketing and communications, summed up what’s made Citi Field so special in recent seasons: “Each year, we’ve tried to do more things to add to the ballpark experience for everyone ... It’s all about the fans every year.”

It turned out that Tim Tebow brightened up spring training for The New York Mets by distracting fans from worrying about whether Matt Harvey will ever regain his velocity or if David Wright is finished. Tebow got a few hits, made some good catches,

and (perhaps most importantly) made fans happy by signing a ton of autographs and taking an equal amount of selfies with them. It will be interesting to see whether the Mets have Tebow play this summer for The Brooklyn Cyclones. The New York Yankees camp wasn’t the same without the likes of Mark Teixeira, Carlos Beltran, and Alex Rodriguez. Things were so tranquil in Tampa that the biggest story was outfield prospect Clint Frazier cutting off his long red locks to conform with the team’s conservative grooming policy. Although they did not come close to winning the World Baseball Classic, underdog Team Israel generated a lot of goodwill and surprised a lot of folks by winning games against South Korea, Taiwan, the Netherlands, and Cuba before getting bounced by Japan. Granted, only a couple of the players were actually born in

Israel, but the results gave a sense of pride to Jewish fans all over the world; it should spark interest in our national pastime in Israel, where currently soccer and basketball rule. Former Yankees media relations director and longtime baseball author Marty Appel has written what I consider to be the definitive biography of the most famous baseball manager of all time: Charles Dillon Stengel, better known by his nickname, Casey, derived from the initials of his hometown, Kansas City. The book is titled Casey Stengel (Doubleday), with the particularly accurate subtitle “Baseball’s Greatest Character.” Stengel had his greatest success managing the Yankees in the 1950s, but was fired after the team lost the 1960 World Series to the Pittsburgh Pirates in seven games thanks to Bill Mazeroski’s home run in the 10th inning of the deciding contest. The Yankees were probably going to ditch Stengel even if they had won the Series because of his age: “I’ll never make the mistake of turning 70 again!” Stengel bitterly said after he was let go. The fledgling New York Mets immediately signed him to be their first manager. Appel does a nice job telling both well-known and more obscure anecdotes about Casey and those awful Mets teams that made losing an art form in their early years. While some in the media,

He played the comic relief role as Mets manager as a way of taking pressure off of the shoulders of his inexperienced (or in some cases, not particularly talented) players. The highlight of that tournament was not the championship game, but the Duke-UNC semi-final where it seemed as if the entire state of North Carolina was on hand to witness it. The Barclays Center was the liveliest that I have ever seen there, and it served as a
reminder that if The Brooklyn Nets ever can be competitive, an NBA game at Barclays can be a happening. Congratulations to Nets center Brook Lopez on hitting the 10,000-point mark in the NBA. Lopez is one of the most underappreciated athletes in New York history because he has generally played on awful teams. In spite of that, he has never complained or demanded a trade. He has always been accessible to both fans and media. First year Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson breathed a sigh of relief when the Nets beat the Sacramento Kings as March started to earn their 10th win of the 2016-17 season. That meant that the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers remain in the history books as the worst NBA team of all time. Never mind that it took the Nets the first two months of 2017 to win two games. Fans and media members alike were saddened to learn of the recent death of former New York Knicks analyst John Andariese, who possessed a mellifluous, relaxed voice and never put on airs. Sure, he wanted the home team to win, but never sugarcoated things when they weren’t going well for the blue and orange. The New York Giants made a good pickup by signing wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who had just been cut by The New York Jets a few days earlier. Marshall always plays well for his new team the first year after he signs – yet his production seems to drop precipitously in succeeding years. The Jets took a lot of knocks from critics for bringing New England Patriots linebacker Dont’a Hightower for a visit to their Florham Park, New Jersey headquarters. It happened to be his birthday the day he came calling, and the team had cupcakes baked for him in his honor. It was a nice gesture, but Hightower wound up
re-upping with the Pats. Still, the Jets deserve credit for trying. Boxing is doing better than expected these days. The Danny Garcia-Keith Thurman welterweight championship fight at Barclays Center delivered enormous ratings for CBS. On St. Patrick’s Day, Irish Olympic boxer Michael Conlan was able to sell out The Theater at Madison Square Garden. European promoter Richard Schaefer is launching World Boxing Super Series, a tournament where the winning pugilists will share in a $50 million prize purse. Boxing tournaments have not done well historically, but the time may be right for one to succeed. Showtime will broadcast the bouts.

Mohegan Sun (PA): Returning to Mohegan Sun Pocono are what many have dubbed one of Northeast Pennsylvania’s biggest parties: Starting Thursday, June 1, the resort's “Party On The Patio” will feature food and drink specials, free live entertainment provided by tribute bands, and a breathtaking view of NEPA scenery. Netflix has acquired the worldwide rights to filmmaker Yance Ford’s documentary Strong Island, which had its world premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and was shown in March at The Museum of Modern Art and The Film Society of Lincoln Center. This fall, the film will launch globally on Netflix and in limited theatrical release. Strong Island chronicles the arc of a family across history, geography and tragedy, from the racial segregation of the Jim Crow South to the promise of New York City area, from the presumed safety of middleclass suburbs to the maelstrom of an unexpected, violent death. Strong Island chronicles the story of the Ford family: Barbara Dunmore, William Ford, and their three children, and how their lives were shaped by the enduring shadow of race in America. The Creme Of Philadelphia :Ladybird, The End Of America Headline In Huntington
A pair of Philadelphia-based folk acts – Ladybird and The End Of America – co-headline The Folk Music Society Of Huntington’s next Hard Luck Café series show on Thursday, April 20 at at Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington. An open mic precedes the concerts; learn more by calling (631) 425-2925, or log on to fmsh.org. Admission is $15 ($10 for Cinema Arts Centre and Folk Music Society of Huntington members), sold only at the door. Ladybird mixes fiddle, mandolin, banjo, dobro, and guitars with their heralded voices. The band, comprised of Sarah Larsen, Anna Ferneborg, and Laura Szklarski, are self-described as “three ladies hatched on a front porch with whiskey under one wing and a banjo under the other.” The band draws heavily from its roots, folk, and Americana influences. Another group lauded for its harmonies, The End of America – James Downes, Trevor Leonard, and Brendon Thomas – has been likened to Crosby Stills and Nash; this group offers thought-provoking lyrics along with keen musicianship.

During a state of emergency due to the March bizzard, Sting ended his “57th & 9th” tour at this lavish venue with an evening of classic hits and tracks from his new album. Ice and snow were piled high in the streets, but that didn’t prevent concertgoers from finding their way to the show. Pulling out all the stops, Sting elevated the energy level when he opened with “Synchronicity ll,” followed by the new songs “I Can’t Stop Thinking About You” and “Down, Down, Down.” The new album’s mystique and vibe matches Sting’s past projects, and was warmly accepted by the crowd. Sting’s voice has ripened since his heyday, yet he still hits all the right notes, while his bass playing was nothing short of impressive. The Englishman seemed humbled by the turnout, and joked about visiting the streets that inspired the name of the album and tour, noting how they “now may be covered in snow.” “Shape Of My Heart,” “Message In A Bottle,” and “Walking On The Moon” were the highlights of the evening, executed perfectly; Sting ended the main show with “Desert Rose,” “So Lonely,” and “Roxanne” before returning for a pair of encores. LI Rock Veterans Get Progressive
Who: Inner Situation is an established Long Island-based rock band with a progressive sound, comprised of a quartet of seasoned area musicians: Jef Free (lead vocals, guitars, keyboards, and percussion), Ray Matuza (guitar and background vocals), Perry Gale (bass), and Glenn Moss (drums and background vocals). A recently recorded song, “Acceptance,” has been garnering its fare Jef share of attention of late; the group has Free performed at many of the area's top music venues, including The Lounge at The Space at Westbury, K.J. Farrell's, 89 North Music Venue, and The Patchogue Theatre. The Artists & Their Sound: From the band's bio: “Inner Situation … a rare breed given they are into their fifties, and yet they continue to write and perform and pursue music equal to the zest of their Ray Matuza twenties.” The group's learned, progressive rock sound belies their years of experience: Free, a multi-instrumentalist, has performed and taught drums for years, including a stint with Paul Townsend. Matuza has performed with Ringo Starr, Ian McDonald (King Crimson), Annie Haslam (Renaissance), and Steve Howe (Yes), and Perry was invited to teach at Steve Howe's Gale Crosstyles Guitar Camp; he also performed in the Broadway play Movin' Out, based on the music of Billy Joel. Gale has performed original music in the area the late 1970s, working with notable LI-based musicians and writing music in a variety of genres; before Inner Situation, Gale was a founding member of Dead Ahead. Moss has performed with many original and cover bands over the years; Glenn he toured and recorded with Strange Moss Embrace from 1995 through 1999, and toured with the Ozzy Osbourne tribute band Wizard Of Oz in 2000. He is a full-time drum instructor at The Long Island Drum Center. Chuck Berry, Now & Forever: In the recent too-long list of RIPs now includes its most dramatic loss – the pioneer with all the arrows in his back, the door mat that everyone stepped on while making their way in, the bridge that made rock & roll a reality: At the age of 90, Chuck Berry has passed away. He has left worldchanging footprints in his wake; if he hadn't existed, there's a very good chance that we'd still be listening to Doris Day and Patti Page records. Yes, Elvis Presley was the breakthrough, but the actual invention of rock & roll, while assisted by Little Richard, Fats Domino, Bo Diddley, and Jerry Lee Lewis, was brought to fruition by Mr. Berry in terms of lyrics, music, style, attitude, and stage presentation. The electric guitar in his hands shaped young, aspiring musicians worldwide, from Bob Dylan to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. As someone who was between 7 and 9 years old when many of those Chuck Berry hits were getting maximum exposure, I have muddled memories of "Sweet Little Sixteen," "Johnny B. Goode," and ""Rock And Roll Music" when they were relatively new records. Fron 1958 through 1960, the air was electrified by the eradication of crooners, sappy love songs, and guys in suits with Pepsodent smiles (even though that kind of thing never really totally went away). A new wave of brash, rebellious, guitar-driven music aimed at baby boomer teens had taken over the radio airwaves, and so much of that
sound and style had the mark of Berry all over it. When the “British Invasion” hit in 1964, The Beatles and Stones acknowledged Berry as a prime influence, and all the aspiring garage band kids from coast to coast hastened to learn Berry's riffs. Since that time, Berry is rightly regarded as the architect of rock, albeit with a sordid, legendary backstory attached. Thanks for the music and pop culture, Chuck. Rebirth Of Rock?: The death of Chuck Berry once again pointed to the demise of rock & roll as the cultural force that it was for four decades before giving way to hip hop and EDM as the primary drivers of teen culture – but just when we think

that there are no stars any longer, and no bands playing with the energy of the punk ’70s revolution, along comes a Long Island band, The Loose Lips, with a chair-rattling album, Get Loose, and an elemental video for the its first single, "Heels." Once again, rock & roll is exciting; I have seen its future, as Jon Landau once said in the ’70's; it certainly ain't over yet. As if to acknowledge the timeline, I'm told that The Loose Lips did a cover of Chuck Berry's classic record "Carol" at their show on the night of Berry’s death.
