Ross Osteen & Crossroads: Area Stars Return To LI

Ross Osteen & Crossroads – a traditonal power trio from Hendersonville, North Carolina, yet with strong area roots – will perform blues, blues/rock, and R&B originals from their two albums at a pair of area shows in the coming days: April 28 at The Lighthouse Waterfront Café in Glen Cove, and April 30 at Mr. Beery's in Bethpage.

Osteen plays guitar and sings lead vocals; supporting him are Jim Vint on bass and Patrick Gaynor on drums, both hailing from this area.

Originally from New York City and Long Island, respectively, Vint and Gaynor have relocated to North Carolina; both bring years of experience to the project, with Gaynor serving as a lyricist for many of the band's original songs. Both told Good Times that they're looking forward to this homecoming, and expect many of their friends and family to attend the four performances planned for the area (the other shows are April 28 at Lovecrafts and April 29 at Silvana's, both in New York City). grew up in Forest Hills, and like many baby boomers from Queens became a diehard Mets fan at a young age. Azaria’s latest project is “Brockmire,” Wednesday nights at 10 pm on IFC; he plays the title character, Jim Brockmire, a beloved veteran baseball play-byplay broadcaster who had a meltdown in the booth a decade ago when he discovered his wife’s infidelities on their 20th wedding

anniversary. Fast forward a decade, and Brockmire, after a decade in foreign exile calling cock fights in Manila, is back calling games for a low level minor league team.

Brockmire wears the same sort of garish plaid sports jackets that original Mets broadcaster Lindsey Nelson made famous, and Azaria has admitted that both Brockmire’s sartorial style and vocal intonations are homages to Nelson.

The salty language that Brockmire uses is right out of an HBO comedy special – though you’ll laugh so hard that breathing will be difficult by the time that the 30-minute show ends.

‘Music That Matters’ For Long Island Cares In Patchogue Pete Mancini: Stepping Out On His ‘Foothill’

Pete Mancini, the frontman of Butchers Blind, will see his debut solo album, Foothill Freeway, released on May 4 on Paradiddle Records. The new effort explores the Americana influences that have been the hallmark of his work with Butchers Blind.

For the album, Mancini offers his original story songs as well as renditions of tunes by Russ Seeger, Wes Houston and Iain Matthews, a guest vocalist on “Cartwheel Avenue.” The album also features contributions from several area music stars. Mancini and his band will celebrate the release of Foothill Freeway with a show at Patchogue Theatre's “Live in the Lobby” series on May 4. Learn more at petemancini.com.

Emporium in Patchogue, will feature performances by Dear Prudence, playing performing music by The Beatles; Streetfighter, the immensely popular Rolling Stones tribute band; and Amber Ferrari of Joplin's Pearl, recreating the music of Janis Joplin.

All of the net proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Long Island Cares and The Scott Martella Scholarship Fund, named for the 29-year-old aide to Bellone who served on the board of Long Island Cares. Bellone died in August 2016 in an automobile accident on The Long Island Expressway.

Ferrari Amber Ferrari is ranked among the top rock vocalists Long Island has ever produced. A musical chameleon, the blonde stunner has performed in tributes to Madonna and Pat Benatar; her Joplin's Pearl shows, where she takes on the challenging role of the gritty, legendary Janis Joplin, are the ones that have help propel Ferrari's career to her current heights as one of the few area artists that headlines theaters.

Music Book Beat: Holger Petersen is a man who has worn many hats in his native Canada, and not always because of the climate: This veteran Canadian broadcaster and record producer hosts one of the world's most popular blues music radio programs, Saturday Night Blues on CBC Radio (and now on SiriusXM), a show that has been on the airwaves for more than 30 years; his CKUA radio program, Natch’l Blues, has been aired every week since 1969; he runs Stony Plain Records, one of Canada’s longest surviving independent record companies and one that has made its mark worldwide as well; he was a founder of The Edmonton Folk Music Festival; is a member of the Order of Canada; and has Holger earned more accolades than we Petersen have space to print. The personable Petersen is also a music author, and his newest book, Talking Music 2: Blues And Roots Music Mavericks, is now on bookshelves. The tome is as warm and sincere as Petersen himself, as it offers a series of actual interviews with legends such as B.B. King and Allen Toussaint, to Canadian stars such as Blood Sweat & Tears' David Clayton-Thomas and Ronnie Hawkins, to genre stars such as Rory Block, Bobby Charles, Wanda Jackson, Steve Miller, Solomon Burke, and many more artists. The book reads like actual conversations, and give a solid glimpse of why Petersen is as much a giant in the music world as the artists he covers – his appreciation and admiration for the talented musicians he's come to know shines through on every page. The book is now available at Amazon.com and wherever books are sold; the first edition of the book, issued in 2011, is also still in print, and both are vital reading for those who either love roots music or want to learn all they can about their favorite artists. – Bob Smith Harrison's History: The Harrison Family has announced the release of George’s autobiography I Me Mine – The Extended Edition (Genesis Publications), as well as George Harrison – The Vinyl Collection, a massive box set featuring all of the musician’s solo studio albums in one collection. Both were released on the eve of what would have been his 74th birthday in February.

George Harrison’s I Me Mine was originally published by the specialist book publisher Genesis Publications in 1980. It became the first of many collaborations between the former Beatle and Genesis founder Brian Roylance. In conversation with his friend and former Beatles press officer Derek Taylor, and in a first-person commentary that accompanies his songs, Harrison's own words recount everything from his upbringing in Liverpool, to early Beatlemania, his spirituality and philosophy.

This new extended version of the book now spans the complete length of Harrison’s career in music, told in his words and through 141 songs with hand written lyric sheets faithfully reproduced in full color.

Now stretching to 632 pages, it features lyrics to more than 50 songs not previously included, as well as new photographs, many unpublished until now.

PERFORMANCE Johnny Rivers The Lovin' Spoonful NYCB Theatre At Westbury

Johnny Rivers told Good Times that he once “played Westbury once with Chuck Berry.” Rivers made Berry's song Memphis, Tennessee, his own, reaching higher in the charts than the original version did. That song would leave the crowd abuzz on this evening, reminding all how Johnny Rivers Rivers chiseled part of his own foundation on Berry's music. Of course, no one knew on this night that Rivers would salute Berry for the last time (Berry had just passed away), which made a memorable show all the more unforgettable.

Rivers further informed us that the show would be “four pieces, including guitar (Doug

The current version of The Lovin' Spoonful opened with “You Didn't Have To Be So Nice.”

Steve Boone, Joe Butler, Jerry Yester, Mike Arturie, and Phil Smith did the brand name proud despite John Sebastian's absence.

Highlights included a medley of contemporaries' songs that evoked a powerful nostalgia, which the crowd came in large measure to re-live.

A Brand New ‘Alliance’ & Bold New Music Who: Craig Siegelbaum, a veteran of the area music scene working with various groups and artists, is now making news of his own with a new album, Alliance.

The Artist & His Sound: His official bio: “Guitarist/composer Craig Siegelbaum, formerly of the acclaimed Long Island, New York-based bands Supergenius and Half Circle Drive, has made music since he first picked up a guitar as a teenager. Taking a wide range of influences, Craig has been praised by fans and music critics alike for his experimental and innovative style.

“Craig's music has been used on ‘American Idol,’ The MLB Network, A&E, The Food Network, Cartoon Network, and ‘The Opie and Anthony Show’ on Sirius Satellite Radio, to name some of his placements.

Siegelbaum released his first solo instrumental album in 2010, The Space Of Sound. The album is available at all major digital retailers worldwide.

“In 2012, Craig composed the score for the independent film Unseen, which was written and directed by Peter Tedone and released in that spring.

Streaming Rules: It's a new world, kids: A recent report shows that the recorded music industry's biggest income generator is streaming, led by the market leader, Spotify. Vinyl is the one physical format that continues to show dramatic momentum – which makes me happy, as the vinyl record continuse to be the ultimate conveyance for real fans of songs and artists. The purchase and upkeep of the actual object that contains your passion has made itself felt to the youngest generation of consumers, who come out of the woodwork in large numbers when Taylor Swift or Adele drop another CD. Do I actually use my iPhone to “Spotify” a classic David Bowie or Supremes album whilst barreling down the LIE with the windows open? I sure as hell do, but nothing beats the Audio Technica AT LP-120 turntable waiting for me at home – it's the best of all worlds.

No, they don't, yet I'd still be very happy to have a number one record … somewhere, anywhere!

More Icons: Never a column goes by lately where I don't deliver an RIP, and this time, it's to the NYC downtown legend David Peel, who died after suffering a massive heart attack.

Peel had been a mainstay in the Village during the early 70s when John Lennon and Yoko Ono hung out at Max's Kansas City and did local gigs with Elephant's Memory and David Peel & The Lower East Side. Peel remained on the scene for decades, and I most recently had he pleasure of watching him perform with Sea Monster at the 2015 Max's Kansas City reunion at Bowery Electric. He will be missed.

The lesson here: When you have to opportunity to see legendary figures that impacted the pop culture that surrounds us, don't hesitate – go!

The beautiful town of Austin, Texas is always filled with vibrant people, engaging music, and fun. With warm weather year round, it becomes a superb destination for many. Every year, South By Southwest (SXSW) provides an opportunity for people of

all backgrounds and all career paths, to come together in the southwest for an experience unlike any other.

Bridging together music, film, comedy,

important topic at the festival, spanning multiple days and reaching the minds of thousands of innovators and media members who will carry the message forward.

After all was said and done with the interactive conference, the music conference and festival went into full swing. Walking down one of the main bar strips, 6th Street, the area was packed with performers, tourists, and salesmen. For a street that is normally alive and well, SXSW took 6th Street and the surrounding area to a new level. Every genre was represented to their fullest extent, with smaller bands such as Deep Cuts and Totally Mild playing at the local bar, to world famous hip hop artists such as Rick Ross, Desiigner, and D.R.A.M. making appearances at The MTV Woodies across the Congress

artists brought to the stage gave the room life. All types of trap music and dubstep were thrown at the audience, while they received it all with pure bliss.I’d have to give the “best set” award of the night to Ekali; his ability to mix across genres, include well-recognized songs, and keep the energy of the crowd going throughout the night was mind numbing, to say the least. After the show was over, I was lucky enough to get to meet with Alexander Lewis and Ekali and congratulate them on their awesome shows. They were both really cool and more than happy to chat for a bit about their excitement regarding SXSW and their hopes to grow in the future.

They weren’t the only artists I got to speak with: A few hours before his set at Kingdom Nightclub in the downtown area, I sat down with the king of deep house and

the desire to make music under another alias, Hi-Lo, so that he is able to make as much distinct music as possible.

“It gave me more musical freedom and I was able to release more music,” he said, adding, “Hi-Lo is a little darker and more club oriented and bassline driven, where Oliver Heldens is a little more all over the place and diverse.”

With these two names, Oliver has been able to climb to the top. In July 2015, he released the song “Renegade Mastah” as the first track on his label, Heldeep Records. Since then, the label has grown, including a

The growth comes from feeding off the ideas and energy of each other.

Two artists will both look up to each other and be an influence for the other. With that being noted, there’s always a step to take to further oneself and the brand that goes along with that: “My ambition is not to be the biggest but is to just do what I love and create,” said Heldens.

I started my week rather lost and confused, engulfed by all of the events taking place simultaneously throughout the downtown area of Austin. The interactive track was the first to happen. The most interesting

events were talks and keynote speeches about the future of our society. Speakers enlightened the audience about where autonomous vehicles are preparing to go in the next 10 years, and what we must do to achieve those goals. Autonomy isn’t just a feature that needs to be added to cars, but rather a stand-alone milestone. Make an autonomous car that can be driven manually, not the other way around.

Infrastructure needs to change with the cars so that cities can grow from where they currently are to achieve the status of “smart cities,” where these cars can thrive.

Artificial intelligence and where our society needs to move next was an

With lines wrapping around the corner of hopeful festival goers, The MTV Woodies mixed together the music and modern production to form what felt like its own mini-festival inside of SXSW. Similar to The Woodies, the Pandora stage had full-out concert production, hosting acts such as Lewis Del Mar and T.I., including its own village next to the venue for patrons to grab a drink, hang out, and check out some cool tech.

As you can imagine, the highlights of the week, for me at least, included all things EDM. Trap Nation and Chill Nation put on a showcase at The Monster Energy Outbreak House for two nights in an event that included an incredible array of artists. From Said The Sky, Coyote Kisses, and Ekali to Vanic, Medasin, San Holo, Alexander Lewis, and Illenium, this lineup was on point. Everything from the visual aspect and the energy the
