Mann remains a student of human behavior, drawing not just on her own experiences to form the characters in the new songs, but tales told by friends. “I assume the brief on me is that people think that I write these really depressing songs,” said Mann. “I don’t know — people may have a different viewpoint — but that’s my own interpretation of the cliché about me. So if they thought that my songs were very

down-tempo, very depressing, very sad, and very acoustic, I thought I’d just give myself permission to write the saddest, slowest, most acoustic, if-they’re-all-waltzes-so-be-it record I could … I mean, calling it Mental Illness makes me laugh, because it is true, but it’s so blunt that it’s funny.” After several albums with ’Til Tuesday, Mann began her solo career in 1993 with the album Whatever and made a name for herself through her independent success and the founding of SuperEgo Records. In addition to her solo albums, she has appeared on several film soundtracks, most notably the song score for Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia, with
"Save Me" landing her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Original Song. In 2014, Mann joined Ted Leo for a rock-oriented duo project, releasing an album as The Both. Other activities ranged from playing herself on “Portlandia” to performing for President Obama and the First Lady at the White House. Norm Macdonald: From ‘SNL’ To The Paramount

The Paramount Comedy Series presents standup comedy star, film actor and writer, and former “Saturday Night Live” Weekend Update anchor Norm Macdonald on Friday, June 16 at 8 pm. Macdonald is best known for his four-year stint on “Saturday Night Live,” where none other than original Weekend Update anchor Chevy Chase noted that Macdonald was the best anchor to ever grace the chair. Macdonald is a favorite guest on late night talk shows, having performed the final stand-up set ever on David Letterman’s show; the host referred to Macdonald as “the funniest man in the world.” Conan O’Brien has also listed him as a favorite guest. After leaving “SNL,” Macdonald starred in two movies, the first being the cult classic comedy, Dirty Work. He has also appeared in several Adam Sandler films, including his first, Billy Madison, where Macdonald portrayed Sandler’s best friend. Macdonald has also starred in three television series; he became a judge on ”Last Comic Standing,” and recently played Colonel Sanders in an avant-garde series of spots for KFC. Macdonald’s tour-de-force anti-comedy roast of Bob Saget became an instant classic, as well as the five-minute “Moth Joke” on “Conan,” which received a full one-minute laugh. However, it’s still his standup that is his pure gift; his 2011 comedy special “Me Doing Stand-Up” was hailed by The Guardian as one of the best standup specials of all time; Comedy Central also honored him on their “Top 100 Comedians Of All Time” list. The Paramount date will be all new: He retires all material he has used on his TV specials, and guarantees that no two shows he performs are ever identical.

The trio, consisting of Jackson, Felix Hanemann, and Guy Gelso, released their national debut album on Atlantic Records in 1983, produced by Jack Douglas (John Lennon, Aerosmith, Cheap Trick) and highlighted by the singles "Tell Me What You Want" and "Who's Behind The Door?" Zebra got its start on the US east coast club circuit, eventually becoming one of the biggest draws in Long Island music history. As did Rat Race Choir, which dominated the area 1980s music scene with the virtuosity and musical range of
its members. They were known as “the musician’s band” because of its ability to play anything in any style and make it their own. Now, the band has reunited its classic lineup of Dave Chmela, Mark Hitt, Larry McGowan, and Steve Luongo, which has only performed together once during the past 30 years. “Giant” Risks: The senior producer of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” Sara Taksler, has announced the VOD release of Tickling Giants, her funny and heartbreaking new film about the “Egyptian Jon Stewart,” Bassem Youssef. A wide release on Amazon, Google Play, and online streaming services begins today (June 13); links are available at TicklingGiants.com. This new documentary shows what happens when Dr. Bassem Youssef, an Egyptian heart surgeon, brings satire to Egypt during the Arab Spring. Tickling Giants follows Youssef as he meets his hero, Jon Stewart, and as he gets in major trouble for jokes about religion and government. The movie looks at creative ways to fight a president who abuses his power and tries to limit free speech; a cautionary tale about what can happen when leaders go unchecked. Tickling Giants is produced by Sarkasmos Productions LLC in association with Technicolor. Frederic Rose, the CEO of Technicolor, decided to executive produce the film shortly after the Charlie Hebdo attack. “It (Charlie Hebdo) certainly informed our decision to back Sara,” said Rose. “We’re a French company. That attack, and the attacks of mid-November, remain very much on our minds. Bassem is a very charismatic individual. But more than that, the film is a window into the Islamic world of today – in all its complexity.” When Taksler found out Technicolor wanted to be an executive producer, she figured it was a joke: “I thought one of my friends was pulling a prank,” said said. “What were the chances that Technicolor would randomly see my trailer and decide to come on board as an Jon Stewart executive producer? I won a contest I hadn’t even entered.” Taksler never could have imagined that Tickling Giants would become quite so relevant in the western world. “Tickling Giants is a movie about a guy who steps up when he sees power being abused in his country,” said Taksler. “Since Bassem does this through satire, I viewed the story through the lens of my comedy background. I never expected that I would relate so strongly to the politics in Egypt.” As there is a global conservative shift in governments, Taksler sees the movie in a whole new light. “At a screening right after the U.S. election, an audience member said, ‘This is a cautionary tale for America,’ and the whole crowd agreed. It is emotional to see how much American audiences see their own struggles in Bassem’s story.” What surprised Taksler Sara most is how Taksler broad the audience has been. “I expected liberals and fans of ‘The Daily Show’ to like the movie,” she said “What I didn’t expect was the response Tickling Giants would get from others. On the way to our premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, I got a call from someone advising Ted Cruz, who loves the film and has become a champion for it. People who work with The Koch Network have come out to support screenings. I never expected the right and left to come together on this. But I’ve met people from all backgrounds who support free speech and are worried about politicians abusing their power. They want this movie to be seen and discussed.”

Blues Stars Remember J. Geils: When guitarist Jay Geils died on April 11 at age 71, the musician left behind a legacy of creative music, not only for the blues-rock sounds he created within his namesake The J. Geils Band, but also on several albums he recorded for Stony Plain Records that explored the music of J. Geils his formative years – jazz and swing – instilled in him by his father. “Stony Plain was honored to release several swing jazz recordings by Jay Geils including two projects by New Guitar Summit (Jay Geils, Duke Robillard, and Gerry Beaudoin),” said Stony Plain Records founder Holger Petersen. “It was a joy to be in the studio with them and to witness Jay's ability to arrange big band songs for three great swing guitar players. Jazz and blues were his first love and he had a deep understanding of their roots. I admired him for turning his back on rock stardom to play the music he loved.” “I am truly saddened by the loss of Jay Geils,” said Robillard, the legendary blues guitarist. “He was a wonderful human being; intelligent, talented, charming, and a good friend. His in-depth knowledge of blues, jazz, guitars, and Italian cars was remarkable, and he was always enthusiastic and fun to be around. Jay was a down to earth guy in spite of his rock legend status. He will be missed by his legions of friends and fans.” The New Guitar Summit albums Duke included the trio’s Robillard self-titled first CD, as well as a DVD video release, Live From Stoneham Theatre, both released on the Stony Plain label in 2004. In the New Guitar Summit CD liner notes, writer Ted Drozdowski called it “a swinging hybrid of jazz and blues music using delightful three-part harmony playing that's the signature of this epic guitar trio.” The three New England-based guitarists first began performing together in 1997, with one of their highlights coming that year when they joined The Woody Herman Orchestra as special guests in front of 5,000 fans at City Hall Plaza in Boston. In 2008, New Guitar Summit released Shivers, a studio album which was produced by Jay Geils. Joining as special guest on the album was Randy Bachman (The Guess Who, Bachman Turner Overdrive), who added guitar work and laid-back vocals on two Mose Allison songs, “Your Mind Is On Vacation” and “Everybody’s Crying Mercy.” In addition, the band covered such classics as “Flying Home,” “Honey Suckle Rose,” “Broadway” and the title track, written by Charlie Christian and Lionel Hampton. The band also added a jumping arrangement on the early rock ‘n’ roll/R&B chestnut “Little Bitty Pretty One,” plus four original songs. Cooke defeated James Dickerson of Norwalk, Connecticut, 230203 to win her third LIGBT title. Dickerson earned $2,500 for his runner-up position; Cynthia finishing third was Fred & Sam Jankowsky of Staten Island, Cooke with a 194 worth $1,250. Fourth place went to Mike Simeone of Lindenhurst, with a 185 worth $1,000. This “Super Tournament” drew 456 bowlers as entrants, plus 46 desperado entries. Eightythree finalists shared in a $28,090 prize fund. Twenty-one DV8 Pitbull bowling balls were won in high game pots, and $24,000 was paid in additional side action; total payout for the weekend was more than $55,000. The high series of the weekend was shot by Sam Cooke, the champion’s husband, with an 805 series in the Friday 8 pm squad. Due to multiple injuries, Hudson was medically retired in September 2004; his numerous awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Prisoner of War Medal. At the event, Hudson encouraged all USBC associations to raise much-needed funds for BVL, as he and his fellow veterans depend on organizations like BVL to help return to a normal lifestyle. Rev Up For Suds & Fun: The 2017 – and third annual – edition of The Long Island Pintwood Derby will be July 22 at 2 pm at The Long Ireland Beer Company in Riverhead. So who can enter? You can: Climb up into the attic and dust off your old pinewood car, or come and show off your seventh grade woodshop skills. Either way, this is an old-fashioned derby race where local craft beer lovers will compete for trophies, cash prizes, and bragging rights. If you’re not a racer, fans can come and view the event, with no tickets required; the LIBC’s fine brews will be available for purchase throughout this afternoon of fun. The event will follow the traditional pinewood car derby rules, and will be run on an official derby track. Advance registration is required; to register, visit the The Long Ireland Beer Company in person, located at 817 Pulaski Street in Riverhead. Registrations can be made during regular tasting room hours (Monday through Friday from 3 pm to 8 pm,
and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 7 pm). Registrations can also be made at lipintwoodderby.com. The Pintwood Derby (spots are limited, so register early) will be competed in a five-ounce class and an “outlaw” class, open to those 21+. Gordon Lightfoot has written and performed such a bounty of classic music that it was almost worth the sinking of The Edmund Fitzgerald to inspire him. On this night, this veteran singer/songwriter from Canada opened with “The Watchman’s Gone,” followed by “Sea Of Tranquility”; the singer jokingly remarked that the music was “soft,” but that’s a magical ingredient to his muse. Bob Dylan once said he wished that “some of (Lightfoot’s) songs would go on forever.” The enthusiastic crowd expressed repeatedly that Gordon Lightfoot: it was in accord with that sentiment. NYCB The stream of Theatre Lightfoot’s show At continued with gems such Westbury as “Ribbon Of Darkness,” “Beautiful,” “Never Too Close,” and “Restless” – and, of course, the jewels were displayed in “Sundown,” “The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald,” and “If You Could Read My Mind.” The encore was a lovely “Waiting For You,” the last of 26 songs that were performed on this evening. Lightfoot seemed genuinely touched when he noted that Elvis Presley had recorded Lightfoot’s “Early Morning Rain,” and he spoke of going to meet the rock legend at one of “The King’s” concerts – but joked that “Elvis had left the building” when he went backstage after the performance. Fortunately, Lightfoot hasn’t departed, and he is still entertaining us today. Lightfoot is now 78, and almost died in 2002 because of a serious illness; everything recorded and performed since is as welcome a bonus as any fan could ever ask for. – Bob Wilson

Allman, The Legend: Another column, another obit: If ever there was a group that ruled Long Island from the get-go, it is The Allman Brothers Band. The group’s early college shows and the classic double live album was a badge of honor for so many, and the blues-into-country musical collage that they conjured up so expertly still resonates to this day. I myself preferred the bluesy origins over the somewhat country sound that followed, but there's no denying the genius and natural

Gregg Allman was sometimes in the headlines for his personal problems, his marriage to Cher, and other issues, but none of that meant anything to the hardcore fans that he earned and kept satisfied though the decades. Jay Z has signed a 10-year, $200 million contract with Live Nation for touring, merchandise, and all that cool stuff. Artists from the 1960s probably flip their wigs when they read these kind of numbers ... Taylor Swift remains under the radar while fighting in court with a radio DJ who (allegedly) grabbed her butt, and is seemingly still fighting with Katy Perry; they’re apparently both not over their bad blood over who’s dancers belong to who. At least The Supremes used to fight with The Vandellas over practical things such as wigs and gowns!

In addition, they will perform at the annual Meadows Festival at Citi Field in September. Twin sisters who were born in Canada, Tegan And Sara have sold more than one million albums, and have received seven Gold certifications, one Double Platinum certification, three Juno Awards, two Polaris Prize nominations, and a Grammy nomination. Tedeschi Trucks Band will return to The Beacon Theatre for the seventh consecutive year. Continuing their tradition of multiple-night residencies there, Tedeschi Trucks Band lines up another half-dozen performances scheduled for October. This year's slate of shows will feature a selection of openers – The Wood Brothers, North Mississippi Allstars, Greyhounds – and select weekend nights will spotlight two full sets without support. Of particular note is Wednesday, October 11, “TTB & Friends,” as it will mark the group’s 25th show at The Beacon. Willie Nelson recently announced additional dates for his 2017 "Outlaw Music Festival Tour" – one of which will be September 9 at the newly renamed Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater. The star-packed lineup includes not only headliners Willie Nelson & Family, but also an array of stars who have headlined such tours on their own: The Avett Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Margo Price, and Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real.
