Hear Her ‘Breathe’
Soleima's name seems to be on everyone's lips these days; following up her recent recent debut mini-album, No.14, she recently released a reworked album track, “Breathe,” as a single via Big Beat Records. The song features Jamaican dancehall artist Kranium and Hoodboi. “I feel like Kranium fits into the vibe of the song in a really exceptional way,” Soleima explained of the rework. “I love his mellow melodies in this kind of song. Really clever. It has been a great experience.” The Danish musician’s cocktail of pitch-shifted synths, R&B, future bass, and undercurrent of world music is unique, but her vocals elevate her individualistic style to another level. Raised in Aarhus – Denmark’s second-largest city – Soleima grew up in a family home soundtracked by classic soul and R&B, notably Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Otis Redding. Emily Reo shared a demo version of "Charlie," a song from her new album that is featured on the upcoming The Le Sigh Vol. III compilation. The tape was released on August 4 on Father/Daughter Records. Of the song, Reo said: "Charlie is my kitten who died last summer. He was diagnosed suddenly with a rare terminal illness called FIP, and I wrote this song during his last week alive with him sitting on a chair next to me. I tried to express the universal feeling of loss, whether it be a friend, family member or pet, but I also tried to emphasize the ways

Motorhead will soon release Under Cöver, a collection of some of their best cover songs, and a collection which will include the previously unreleased version of David Bowie's "Heroes." Recorded during the Bad Magic sessions in 2015 by Cameron Webb, it was one of the last songs the band recorded together before the death of frontman Lemmy Kilmister. The album hits stores on September 1.

Shania Twain has released the Matthew Cullen-directed video for her new single, “Life's About To Get Good,” The track is taken from Now, Twain’s first album in 15 years, out September 29 on Mercury Nashville. "I was at home looking out at the ocean and I said to myself, 'Here I am stuck in this past of negativity, but it's so beautiful out,’” wrote Twain about writing the single. Twain is a five-time Grammy Award winner.

The final date for this year's Farmingdale Music On Main series will be Thursday, August 24, with live music performed along Main Street from 5 to 9 pm. “The Village is gearing up for the summer with many free events and we are excited to celebrate with outdoor music and fun along Main Street with Farmingdale’s Music On Main,” said Mayor Ralph Ekstrand. The famed international pop star Sepideh, who is originally from Iran, will headline a special concert performance at North Hempstead Beach Park on August 27 at 5:30 pm. No Soup For You … It's True: The Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City was ranked as the 10th busiest shopping mall in the United States in a famous IsItPacked.com report, and the Simon Property Group facility has only improved greatly in the minds of many shoppers after its recent $200 million renovation. However, surprising is the number of big-name eateries that have exited the busy food court area, now known as Roosevelt Field’s “Dining District,” during the past few months. No longer at Roosevelt Field are Brother Jimmy's, the barbecue chain reviewed here in May 2016 that remains a New York City staple; The Original Soupman (remember the “Soup Nazi” episode of “Seinfeld”?), which was in the news in June after Nation's Restaurant News reported it had filed for bankruptcy; Potatopia, which offered potatoes served in a variety of unique ways; Tres Toros; and other small spots in the food court are now closed as well. There seems to be no problems with the food section overall, as foot traffic remains heavy, particulary on weekends: Remaining are such favorites as Charley's Philly Steaks, Taco Bell, Johnny Rocket's, Wendy's, Patsy's Pizza, an array of Asian eateries, as well as most of the other famous names. Most area fans are aware that Carle Place's Steve Vai has gone on to become one of the most renowned guitarists in the music world, performing with no less than Frank Zappa, Whitesnake, and David Lee Roth, as well as becoming one of the most famous musicians in serious rock history – not only as a guitarist, but as a producer, arranger, and composer as well. Now, area fans can take part in a once-in-alifetime opportunity as a “Steve Vai Masterclass” will be offered on Thursday, August 24 at 7 pm at The Music Zoo in Roslyn. The event will begin with a oneon-one interview with area musician Andy Aledort, and will be an intimate experience that will allow those taking part to hear Vai speak about tone, technique, and everything guitar and music related; those attending are welcome to bring guitars to the class. The price of admission to the masterclass also includes a raffle entry to win a Ibanez RG-421 guitar signed by Vai; the raffle will benefit The Family & Children’s Association. Area comedian and actor Chris Roach – now a TV staple thanks to his role on CBS' “Kevin Can Wait” starring Kevin Jamse – is now a guitarist in the hard rock and metal band Ridgehaven; the group performed at Revolution in Amityville on August 17. The band consists of Roach on guitar, Joe Viola on vocals, Rob Maresca on drums, and Mike Warnken on bass; the group is currently in the midst of working on its debut self-titled EP, to be released in the coming months. Fans have been surprised by Roach's acumen on guitar; his ability to shred and drive the band forward are proving that this is a multi-facted performer. Roach is a Ronkonkoma native who has also appeared in film and television, as well as top comedy venues all over the country, as well as many top venues throughout this region. Hops To It In LI: The inaugural Long Island Fresh Hop Festival will take place on Saturday, September 23 from 12:30 to 4 pm at LI Hops at Plant Connection in Riverhead; more information on this event and advance tickets are available at lifreshhopfestival.com. An array of Long Island-based breweries will converge at LI Hops, where those takig part will be able to taste versions of fresh hop beers alongside the traditional version of the same beer. These fresh hop infused beers are special limited-edition versions of favorite local beers, many of which are not available to the general public. Brewers will be on site explain how their creations came to life, and how they chose what beers to fresh hop. Fans can try local pumpkin ales, Oktoberfests and a variety of other styles. Other attractions include live music and food trucks; due to the finite availability of these beers, tickets are limited and being sold on a first-come first-served basis. This is a 21 and over event only. Motorhead In A Mug: Amplified Ale Works recently announced a new beer collaboration with rock legends Motorhead. Born to Lose IPA is a boldly aggressive West Coast-style IPA, befitting of the band's loud, aggressive style. The 6.5 percent IPA is brewed with Cascade, Simcoe, and Citra hops that provide an earthy, resinous aroma with notes of fresh citrus. In an ode to Motorhead's British roots, the beer was also brewed with Maris Otter, a premium British malt that brings a sweet balance to the beer's bold bitterness. The limited edition beer is being sold directly from Amplified's two San Diego locations, and will also be available for purchase via the website TheBeerConnect.com for refrigerated shipping throughout California. The follow up beer in the series, Live to Win IPA, will be released later this year. A Lasting Legacy: It's just unending now, watching my life flash before me as we put another music giant to rest. Suffering from Alzheimer's disease for years, the iconic Glen Campbell passed away at the age of 81 just as I was preparing this column. In this case, this superstar’s demise was somewhat expected because of many news reports detailing his condition, but to a baby boomer like me, it is still quite jarring on several levels. Campbell was a true product
of the swinging Sixties, the Beatles/Motown era. He was a country picker who played on historic pop and rock classics as part of The Wrecking Crew (if you haven't seen the documentary about the Crew, see it), was a Beach Boy for a minute, and then became one of the most successful solo artists of the 1960s and '70s. Stars of this stature just don't come along anymore, we live in different times now, but those of us who were there get to tell tales of when giants walked the earth. Glen Campbell was one of them; rest in peace. Reeves On A Roll: Fear not, as this Martha Reeves classic singer is still alive and well: The lead singer of The Vandellas, Martha Reeves has celebrated her 76th birthday, and is touring like a teenage
rock band would. As a longtime fan, I'm especially excited to see a major revival of interest in her catalog of '60s hits that are too often overlooked. The first inkling of this latest revisit is the Edgar Wright film Baby Driver, which features the cosmic earthshaker "Nowhere To Run”; it's prominently showcased in the film and on the soundtrack album. "Run" has always been a standout example of the real Motown sound in all its glory. The new film Detroit is a heavy, dramatic look at the 1960s riots, the aftermath of which devastated that town for decades after. Another Vandellas song, "Jimmy Mack,” is featured in this film, and is a plot element. Martha & The Vandellas were performing in a theater in Detroit the night that it all went down, and they were going to debut the instantly catchy "Jimmy Mack" at that show. I am happy that Ms. Reeves is finally getting the musical medals she so richly deserves — more, more! What's New: My obsession album remains Damn by Kendrick Lamar; the album is full of mostly single word title ruminations ("Blood," "Pride," "Lust," and "Humble"), another Lamar-istration of intellect and street that rivals my very first rap album, The Last Poets on Douglas Records. I picked that one up in 1970 in the record store in Penn Station; when I brought that home and played it, my hair stood up (there was no real rap scene at the time; this was the start). My new discovery in that same arena is Nitti Banks, who I was recently turned on to; YouTube videos are "Missin,'” "K'Up," and "Uber Everywhere,"; the kid is a natural, talented and ready to go.
