As I sit here right now, I can feel the festival withdrawals setting in.

Every part of me wants to go back to Lost Lands and re-experience the last weekend of pure bliss and incredible music. Making its debut

in Thornville, Ohio, Lost Lands was a bass music fan’s dream.

Let’s go through what made it so

amazing and some things that need to change for next year.

General organization was on point. The lines to get into the venue were fast and efficient and the free high quality earplugs that were given to each guest were

key in protecting your ears from the incredible high volumes and low frequencies. The two stages that patrons could visit were far enough away that they did not interfere with each other and each one had it’s own vibe to it. The Cave of Souls took you into a giant enclosed and curved tent

with stalagmites and stalactites coming from the floor and ceiling, ancient hieroglyphics being projected on the outside of the tent, with the vibrant and enticing lighting. For a secondary stage, this one was great.

The sound quality was awesome and the tent was (usually) big enough to fit everyone to see the artist. As the night went on, though, trying to see your favorite artist at the Cave of Souls was a bit of a hassle and sometimes not worth it if you didn’t arrive 15 minutes before the start of the set.

In general the walk between the two stages wasn’t too bad. There was one section where the merchandise was being sold that acted as a bottleneck as the lane narrowed and didn’t allow as many people through.

However, once at the Prehistoric Paradox, all of that was quickly forgotten. Excision really outdid himself with the abundance of enormous dinosaurs all around the festival grounds and the main stage. Oh, and don’t for get about the massive pyrotechnic volcanoes on either side of the stage. The Prehistoric Paradox stage was the ultimate experience for a festival stage. And I absolutely have to give a shout out to PK sound. The highs, mids, and lows came through extremely clearly and I couldn’t get over how crisp the subs and bass kicks were. The music was the perfect volume; extremely loud but also somehow giving you the ability to have a conversation with your friend next to you. Looks like I need to get a PK system in my home. One important thing that needs to be assessed for next year is the water situation.

There was only one water station inside the venue for the thousands of people and the supply they were pulling from was being overburdened, causing water refill times to reach around five minutes per person. If you planned ahead, this usually wasn’t too big of a problem, though.

ever seen one; every artist performed at their peak. I was able to see artists I had been trying to see for a very long time and also got to see some of my favorite artists perform on the same stage. I thought Sullivan King absolutely killed it with his metal/dubstep mixture of a performance and he had an insane amount of energy. Some other artists that greatly impressed me were Phiso, PhaseOne, Illenium, Midnight T B2B Figure, Cookie Monsta, and of course

Excision and his four sets from that weekend. Each one of his sets kept getting better and better.

I, of course, have to give a shout out to my girl Rezz. She blew my mind, just as she always does during a live show. The sounds that come out of the speakers when she goes on stage are jaw dropping and the energy she brings is unparalleled. I made sure that as soon as I got home, I started going through all of the sets I saw and downloading songs nonstop. This was easily one of

the best festivals I’ve ever been to, and one of the best weekends of my life.

Thank you so much to Excision and his team for putting this on and I cannot wait to see what’s in store for next year.

David Sedaris

Humorist & Best-Selling Author Returns To Staller Center He’s a good read: The humorist and best-selling author David Sedaris returns to Long Island – his only appearance here on his current tour – on Friday, October 20 at 8 pm at The Staller Center for the Arts at Stony Brook University. He’ll read from new and unpublished works, and he’ll take audience questions as well as sign books both before and after the reading. “David Sedaris had a performance at Staller Center in October 2013 to a sold-out house of 1,000 people,” said Alan Inkles, director of The Staller Center.

“Audience members pleaded to have him back as soon as possible, and we have honored the request. We are thrilled to be the venue for his only Long Island appearance on his U.S. tour.”

Sedaris began a rigorous touring schedule in September, with 54 dates through January 2018. He will have readings at numerous European cities, followed by 40 U.S. readings, and travel to Australia in January.

His most recent book was Theft By Finding: Diaries 1977-2002, consisting of selections from the diaries that are the source for Sedaris’s autobiographical essays. For nearly four decades, Sedaris has faithfully kept a diary in which he records his thoughts and observations of the odd and funny events he witnesses. Anyone who has attended a live Sedaris event knows that his diary readings are often among the most joyful parts of the evening.

Now, in Theft By Finding, his favorite entries are available in print. The book will be on sale at Staller Center along with other Sedaris favorites.

Also just published is Jeffrey Jenkins’s David Sedaris Diaries – A Visual Compendium anl lustrated volume of artwork and images selected from 40 years of diaries.

The book begins with a forward by Sedaris.

The last few years have been banner ones for rock vocalist Lisa Polizzi and her band.

A typically inept New York Mets maneuver: Rather than being up front about his pending dismissal and allowing manager Terry Collins to enjoy a victory lap during their the team’s final homestand, upper management refused

to formally admit that he was toast. Mets GM Sandy Alderson was steadfast in insisting that a statement would be issued only after the season concluded. Dragging things out only created backbiting, which could have been avoided.

Suddenly, stories were leaked that Collins ran his players into the ground (particularly closer Jeurys Familia, who missed most of the year with a shoulder injury) by not giving them proper rest. Some anonyTerry mous young players Collins claimed that Collins favored veterans and did not communicate well with them. That kind of cowardice rightfully angered team captain David Wright, who went public with his displeasure at their disloyalty.

While it’s patently unfair to blame Collins for the spate of injuries that have happened to the Mets this

season, there may be some veracity to the complaint about how he handled Familia. I remember when the Mets were winning a rare blowout against the Dodgers late in the summer in 2016. I was shocked that Collins had Familia pitch the top of the ninth inning with his team up by a score of 15-2. On the other hand, I can’t understand how any Mets player could have a serious beef with Collins; if a player was struggling, Collins never threw him under the bus; the manager would tell the press: “We’ve got to find a way to get him going.” As far as the charge of favoring veteran players, Collins was certainly guilty – and so is nearly every other manager in history.

Veterans tend to have the highest salaries, and obviously Mets’ ownership would have been enraged had the manager not played them.

SNY Mets field reporter Steve Gelbs joined Gary Cohen, Ron Darling, and Keith Hernandez in the booth during the Mets’ home finale.

Gelbs led a poignant discussion about the stresses that players feel when things aren’t going well such as worrying if they’ll be traded, or worse, sent to the minor leagues. Will such players be able to support their families if they find themselves out of baseball? It’s surprising how infrequently those kind of player concerns are brought up to the public.

The teams of Eric Bholan and Dena Bocchino and Michael Lamanno and Pierce Field were crowned Adult Junior champions at the LIYBT tournament on September 24 at Farmingdale Lanes. Fourty-two teams competed for more than $2,000 in scholarshiops on a challenging 42' R-Gateway Arch oil pattern.

Tapia Is Tops: Viviany Tapia, 37, won his first LIGBT title by defeating senior bowler Fletcher Bacote, 235-223, at a “house shot” tournament at Astoria Bowl on September 29. Viviany, who was bowling in his first LIGBT event, earned $1,000 for his victory.

John Conroy of Mahopac and partner Alex Cavagnaro of Massapequa defeated Ray Edwards of Middle Island and Matt O’Grady of Rahway, New Jersey, 447-432, 402-471, 436-427, in the best-of-three-game title match to win the recent PBA/ PBA50 Millsboro Lanes Doubles title at Millsboro Lanes in Millsboro, Delaware.

In the best-of-three semifinal round, Conroy and Cavagnaro defeated Tony Reynaud of Harwinton, Connecticut, and Anthony Pepe of Elmhurst (pictured above right), 2-0.

50 Is Nifty: PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. (pictured below) defeated Lee Brosius in the best-of-three-game title match to win his amazing 104th PBA title in the PBA50 Rocky Mount South Open at Rocky Mount Bowling Center in Rocky Mount, Virginia. “Big Papi” Oritz was an honoree at the 2017 Buoniconti Fund Dinner. I asked him if he is in touch with actor Kenan Thompson, who does a spot-on impression of him during occasional “Weekend Update” segments on “Saturday Night Live.” Oritz flashed his usual smile: “Kenan is my man. We text all the time!” He added that he thinks more people know who he is from Thompson’s caricature of him than from his 20 seasons in the majors. Oritz added that he hopes to make an appearance on “SNL” this year.

New York Giants offensive tackle Justin Pugh doubled as a pitch man for the newest men’s grooming products from Conair Men at a recent media launch in the East Village.

Pugh has one of the best-maintained beards in sports, so he certainly was a smart choice on Conair’s part to be a celebrity endorser. Pugh’s appearance came two days after the Giants were beaten by The Philadelphia Eagles 27-24

in a heartbreaking last second defeat at Lincoln Financial Field. “I’ve never been in a game where my team lost on a 61-yard field goal,” Pugh said philosophically. Ironically, Justin grew up an Eagles fan in Holland, located in Bucks County. I asked him if that has caused any issues over the years: “My family are all now Giants fans, but my friends are still big Eagles fans and they get on me,” he said with a laugh.

Last year, Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks signed Portland Trailblazers swingman Allen Crabbe to a lucrative contract when Crabbe became a restricted free agent last summer. The Blazers matched the Nets’ offer, and Crabbe remained in Portland.

Marks didn’t give up, and in June the Blazers traded Crabbe to the Nets in order to reduce payroll. At the Nets media day, Crabbe seemed thrilled with Marks’ pursuit of him: “It’s great to be wanted!” he laughed.

Crabbe will welcome the relative anonymity of playing in the Nets' market: “In Portland I couldn’t go anywhere without being recognized. My teammates and I were treated like rock stars.”

How long it will take Carmelo Anthony to regret waiving his no-trade deal with the Knicks to go play in Oklahoma City? The Thunder have a fine team, but OKC is a small market, and a conservative place to boot.

The death of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner at age 91 last month brought

out a lot of the old tropes about how men bought it for the articles. While that old bromide always generated a few guffaws, the reality is that Playboy actually did feature outstanding articles – and that extended to sports, where Anson Mount’s college football and NFL previews were always highly anticipated. Mount’s son, also named Anson, is the lead actor in ABC’s new action series, “Marvel’s Inhumans.”

Music As A Target: The horrible news about the shooting attack at the Route 91 Harvest Country Festival in Las Vegas led me to this conclusion: Popular culture, and popular music in particular, appears to be in the cross hairs, as the saying goes. The list is maddening: The Pulse gay dance club in Florida; the rock concert at The Bataclan Club in France; the Ariana Grande stadium show in the UK; and now this packed country music festival in Vegas.

We stand with those that we have lost, and will continue to support live music everywhere – now more than ever.

Another Loss: It simply continues to unnerve me as this progression of deaths in rock and pop continues unabated with almost every Rhythm Tracking that I submit. The grim reality is that time is on the march, and the generation of pop and rock's greatest era is aging and dying – something that none of us of that generation really want to look into the eye of, but I'm looking.

Tom Petty is one of the most talented and loved of his generation, and even his death was a cause ofcontroversy as some news outlets prematurely reported his passing before it actually happened. I sat and listened to the Hard Promises album on a clean vinyl pressing, turntable spinning like it was 1980, and his talent and style made itself evident once again. I have even

Out of the blue, they’re back: The original lineup of The Dixie Dregs has reformed, and will tour once again in March.

The band traces its beginnings to the band Dixie Grit, which started in a Georgia high school with Steve Morse on guitar and Andy West on bass. Dixie Grit morphed into The Dixie Dregs at the University of Miami School of Music, where Allen Sloan (violin) and Rod Morgenstein (drums) joined. who were the “dregs” of Dixie Grit. The members of the Dixie Dregs remained committed to attending the school, which hosted a talented musical community during their tenure. In 1975, the group's demo album, The Great Spectacular, was recorded at the University of Miami and, and re-released on CD in 1997.

The band moved back to Augusta, where Steve Davidowski (keyboards) completed the lineup that would become The Dregs.
