Get 'High' With Beatles Music: A Celebration Of The Fab Four's Final Concert In Port Washington
On Saturday, September 29 at 5 pm, a crew of Port Washington musicians will team with other area players for a live music event on the “rooftop” terrace of The Port Washington Public Library. The goal is to fill Port Washington's Main Street with the music of The Beatles as it was performed on that group’s famous final live appearance. January 30, 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of that Beatles' final performance on the roof of Apple Records in London. Port Washington librarian and Beatles’ historian Tony Traguardo has put a band together – one that includes a number of regulars from the library’s semimonthly Hootenanny events – to commemorate this live event. “Since it will be too cold to play outside in January, I thought that maybe I could form a band to play the show on September 29, a few months earlier than the actual anniversary,” said Traguardo, pictured left. “And since the library has a high terrace that looks out onto Main Street, I figured, ‘What better place?’ The national summer reading campaign slogan for libraries nationwide this year is ‘Libraries Rock,’ so this seemed to be a great way to reinforce that idea.” The set list for the afternoon will include the five songs that The Beatles performed on that day in January of 1969, augmented by songs that may have been included in a fullscale Beatles concert of the same time period. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be moved indoors into the Port Washington Public Library’s performance space.

During the New York Mets’ recent west coast road trip, third baseman Todd Frazier dove into the Dodger Stadium stands trying to catch a foul pop up. He came up with a ball in his glove, and the umpire ruled that he made the

catch. It turns out that Frazier may not have really made the circus catch after all, as he apparently had a white rubber ball in his glove, which he threw into the crowd. I asked Frazier about the catch, and he chuckled: “What can I tell you? I picked up the wrong ball!” Mets play-by-play voice Gary Cohen certainly wants the Mets to do well, but isn't shy about pointing out flaws. Two weeks ago, he lambasted the Mets' offense for its inability to get runners in from third base with less than two out. He then followed that up by criticizing the Mets pitching staff, outside Jacob of Jacob deGrom and Noah deGrom Syndergaard, for giving up so many home runs. In giving absolution to the two Mets aces, Cohen labeled the other pitchers on the staff “peripherals.” Naomi Osaka won the 2018 U.S. Open Women’s Championship, but the final match will be remembered for Serena Williams’ meltdown
after losing a point because the umpire saw her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, making hand signs. While I believe that this was a tick-tack ruling, since coaches always coach (and I am not sure why it is against the rules), it’s doubtful that Williams even saw what the coach was signaling. It all eventually led to Williams smashing her racquet and calling the referee “a thief,” which cost her a game. All of this led to a surreal trophy ceremony on the court of Arthur Ashe Stadium; the pro-Williams crowd booed both USTA president Katrina Adams and ESPN presenter Tom Rinaldi. Fortunately, Williams had the presence of mind to request that the crowd cheer for Osaka and refrain from further booing. That appeared to do the trick, but it was obvious that the 20-year-old Osaka was unnerved. John Isner was presented the USTA Sportsmanship Award by Katrina Adams after he lost a grueling four-set fourth round match to Juan del Potro. Isner laughed when I told him that this was an award that John McEnroe would never have won. It’s safe to say that this is one award that will never reside in Serena Williams’ trophy case, either. Jim Nantz The boxing business has gotten smarter, as fewer fights are going the pay-per-view route; more people are getting interested in a sport that was waning in popularity and losing younger fans. The September 8 World Boxing Council welterweight championship bout between Shawn Porter and Danny Garcia at Barclays Center was televised on Showtime; it was the best fight that I’ve watched so far this
year, as Porter edged Garcia in a 12-round decision. Although it is only six years old, Barclays Center has replaced Madison Square Garden as the premiere venue for boxing outside of Las Vegas. CBS Sports hosted its annual NFL Media Day last month. Ian Eagle is the play-by-play voice of CBS’s second team, with Jim Nantz being the network’s top sports anchor. Eagle has also been the longtime TV voice of The Brooklyn Nets on YES, and in order to survive calling games of that beleaguered franchise, a person has to possess a great sense of humor, which Eagle certainly has. I told Eagle that I was watching a New York Jets preseason game that he was calling while I was in San Diego. “They couldn’t kick, block or tackle,” I told him. “Yes, but other than that they were great,” he replied with a broad smile. Fun, Food, & Friends In East Islip: Starfish Junction, producers of Pour The Core: A Hard Cider Festival, is putting the finishing touches on the 2018 festival on Saturday, September 29 at Heckscher State Park in East Islip. With a pay-oneprice ticket purchase, attendees will be able to sample more than 75 ciders from local, national, and international cider makers. Tickets for the festival are on sale now at PourTheCore.com/LongIsland. Pour The Core will showcase locally produced ciders from Riverhead Ciderhouse (Riverhead), Po’ Boy Brewing (Port Jefferson Station), and Diner Brew Co. (Mt. Vernon), as well as hand-selected national, regional and international brands including Ace Cider (California), Citizen Cider (Vermont), and Romilly Cidre (France). A full list of participating cideries can be found on the event website. “The event is sure to impress both cider lovers and fun seekers alike,” said event organizer Kristyn Dolan. The event will offer food available to purchase from some of Long Island’s popular food trucks, and the ability to compete in the now famous cider donut eating competition. A not-to-be-missed highlight of the cider festival is the Cider Donut Eating Contest, this year sponsored by East Main and Main donut bar and Po’ Boy Brewery, both with retail locations in Port Jefferson. Twenty-five festival attendees will test their donut eating skills for a prize package valued more than $500 — including a year’s supply of donuts. Ticketholders are able to register in advance on the event websitePourTheCore.com, or sign-up at the event if space remains. Contestants will receive a cider donut, which will be hung from a string. The contestant who eats their donut fastest without using their hands will be declared the winner. Floral Park native and two-time Pour The Core reigning donut eating champion Christopher Bingold is attending, and hopes to defend his undefeated title. “This will be my third year at the festival, and both my wife and I love trying new ciders as well as our favorites,” said Bingold. “My first year, I entered the contest on a whim and was surprised when I won. he’s unstoppable: The August 17 release of Ariana Grande’s new (and fourth) album, Sweetener, has set an array of records for her labels, Republic Records and Universal Music Canada: The new effort soared to #1 upon the moment of its release, locking in the pop superstar’s status as the biggest star charting singles in 2018. Spearhead's Back: After three months of successful dates this summer, including sold-out shows at Red Rocks Amphitheater, Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery, Red Butte Garden, and Salvage Station, the multifaceted Michael Franti & Spearhead are continuing to add dates to their Stay Human tour. Kicking off October 4 at The Paramount in Huntington, the new tour dates include performances at Philadelphia’s The Fillmore with Thievery Corporation, Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse, The Cowan in Nashville, Champions Square in New Orleans with Trombone Shorty, The Gates Hotel in Key West and more. The forthcoming record is influenced by Franti’s new self-directed documentary, Stay Human, which has won an array of awards while on the festival circuit, including The RWJ Barnabas Health Award at the 2018 Asbury Park Music & Film Festival, The Audience Award at the 2018 Nashville Film Festival, The Audience Award and the Voice for Humanity Award at the 2018 ILLUMINATE Film Festival and the Soul in Cinema Award at the 2018 Maui Film Festival. The film will continue to screen at film festivals this winter, including upcoming public screenings at The Woodstock Film Festival in upstate Woodstock, and Mill Valley Film Festival in San Rafael, California. Of the tour, new music and film, Franti explained, “I’ve traveled the globe making music and throughout the years I’ve always hoped that it could inspire small steps towards making the world a better place. Struggling with the challenges of the world I began filming my new documentary, Stay Human, telling the stories of heroic everyday people who helped me to discover more deeply what it means to be and Stay Human.” Franti began writing music as a way to process both the political landscape of the late 1980s and the unique sounds and ideas of his Bay Area upbringing. In 1994, Franti formed Michael Franti & Spearhead. Touring with his band, Franti continued to notice inequality and injustice both at home and abroad. The band released their seminal Stay Human album in 2000, reflecting on the unjust nature of the death penalty among other themes, to make sense of our common humanity in juxtaposition to near constant violations of human rights. Franti released his first self-directed documentary, I Know I’m Not Alone, in 2005 to widespread critical acclaim. The film depicts his mission for peace in the Middle East, with a focus on the human cost of war. Profitable Pap: The Meg, The Nun (right)
during its first weekend alone and became the second-biggest Septemeber weekend opener ever, according to Box Office Mojo. The Meg, the big-budget shark pic, at press time has earned $131 million or so, barely making back its production costs, but hurtled to #1 during its initial weekend nonetheless. So what are folks getting for all that scratch? Two of the worst films of 2018, that's what: In The Meg, action-always Jason Statham and a team of “experts” comprised of bad actors battle a humungous shark creature
that will eat anything and everything – but from Jaws to Sharknado, it's all been seen before. At least a few of the special effects are edifying, but what’ the point? The Nun can’t even be spun that positively; here, pretty much the same devil-possessed nun from The Conjuring 2 returns to rehash the smash, all delivered with a sleepy lack of skill by men and women who move their eyes and mouths in various ways in attempts to “act.” It's not scary in the least, but worse, it's redundant. Repeats, repeats … nothing on but repeats. Selma!

With the release of his debut LP You Know Who You Are (via Inhuman Records) earlier this year – and following his recent performance at The Jones Beach Bandshell – the folk-driven indie rock singer/songwriter Ryan Chernin is in the midst of an expansive area tour; the next date is October 10 at The Lounge At The Space At Westbury. The new album is the culmination of a year’s worth of work in and out of the studio, a sultry collection of songs about life, love, and loss. “What was most important to us was to take our time with it and really make sure it was perfect every step of the way,” said Chernin of his new album, currently gaining notice at radio and in the press. “It was about selecting the right people.” That list of people includes producer John Eugenio, mixer Chris Davies, and “Saturday Night Live” guitarist Jared Scharff. Archie Fisher & Garnet Rogers: A 'Farewell' On The Sunday Street
Veteran folk troubadours Archie Fisher and Garnet Rogers are in their final tour – and that trek will bring them to Long Island (their only New York area appearance) for the “Sunday Street Series” on September 30 at 5 pm at The First United Methodist Church in Port Jefferson. Advance sale tickets are $25 through September 28 at sundaystreet.org, with tickets at the door at $30. In 1985, Scotland’s Fisher and Canada’s Rogers set out on a tour of the US and Canada; the evenings of music and humor that were documented in an album, Off The Map. Although the muscians have joined for subsequent tours, this will be their last; a master guitarist, singer, and songwriter, Fisher has hosted BBC Radio Scotland’s “Travelling Folk” show for more than 25 years. He was inducted into The Scots Traditional Music Hall of Fame, and in 2006 was awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire), an honor bestowed by Queen Elizabeth. Rogers has been proclaimed by Sing Out as “the greatest interpreter and vocalist performing on the contemporary folk scene.” He set out on the road at 18 as a full-time working musician with his brother Stan Rogers, the Canadian folk legend. Establishing himself as a solo artist following his brother’s death, Garnet has delivered performances centered on extraordinary songs, his unsurpassed playing on a host of guitars, and his over the top humor and lightning-quick wit.

A New Wrestling Era?: Something surprising is going on in the world in professional wrestling, and for once, the news isn't dominated by WWE, currently seen on USA (and soon coming to Fox): A pair of upstart wrestling events have drawn a shockingly high amount of interest, which may mean that fans might be seeking something other than the product that Vince McMahon and his company have long presented. A recent mega-card called “All In,” featuring stars such as Cody (formerly known as Cody Rhodes and Cody Stardust in WWE) and the tag team The Young Bucks, as well as other stars from leagues such as the revived NWA and independent organizations including Bully Ray, Jay Lethal, Tessa Blanchard, Kenny Omega, and Kazuchika Okada, became the first wrestling event to draw more than 10,000 fans to a U.S. arena in 25 years when it was presented at The Sears Center near Chicago on September 1. Pay-per-view numbers weren't in by press time, but given the massive amount of publicity the card received, the numbers are likely to be as surprising as the live gate; the card sold out in 30 minutes when tickets originally went on sale. Another major arena event, promoted by longstanding indie league Ring Of Honor (ROH) and New Japan Pro Wrestling, has sold out Madison Square Tessa Garden in New York Blanchard City, the first time in decades that any organization other than WWE has even promoted a show there – and that card isn't even scheduled until April 6 of next year. Reportedly, WWE tried to block the ROH booking of the Garden, but ROH prevailed in obtaining the date, and it paid off almost instantly. Amazingly, the MSG card will take place the weekend of WrestleMania 35, scheduled to take place April 7 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. All we can glean from all this is that interest in pro wrestling certainly hasn't waned, and that fans certainly seem to be eager to watch it in any form possible … Congratulations to New York Mets fans, and to the organization itself: It was announced on September 17 that the team had reached an agreement with Entercom, which will move the club’s radio games to WCBS-AM NewsRadio 880 beginning next season; the pact will run through 2025. The new radio deal will finally end the Mets’ disastrous tenure on WOR 710, which they moved to after the New York Yankees moved to WFAN. Mets fans will no longer have to cope with bad reception, terrible sound, and Pete McCarthy’s amateurish pre-game show. Von Hausswollf has been opening eyes and ears with her new album Dead Magic, which consists of only five songs that extend a total of 47 minutes and 20 seconds. It was composed in the summer of 2016 in von Hausswolff’s hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden, and recorded the following year in Copenhagen, Denmark. The majority of recordings were done on the 20th century organ at Copenhagen’s Marmorkirken, “the Marble Church” – one of the largest churches in Scandinavia, with a chapel inspired by the majestic St Joe Walsh & U.S. Veterans Peter’s Basilica in Scott Rome.
