A massive live music fundraising show, “Overcoming My Lung Disease: A Benefit For Don Michael Prager,” will take over on Monday, November 26 beginning at 5:30 pm at The Nutty Irishman in Farmingdale. It's easy to write off pop and rock bands from the 1970s as a bunch of geezers hanging on for some final paychecks on their ways to the retirement home – and yeah, in many cases, the acts deserve it. Once-great groups such as The Guess Who and Canned Heat slog on with few, or in some cases, no original members, delivering rote renditions of hits songs before audiences of near-seniors who couldn't tell who the replacement members were in the first place. P.T. Barnum lays peacefully, not even turning over. However, there’s also a shocking number acts who gained fame in the 1970s and remain vital and quite worthy as attractions – and two of of them were at full strength in the soncially superior Tilles Center on the same night.

Oogee Wawa Average White Band (above) is still led and fronted by Alan Gorrie and Onnie McIntyre, and buoyed by a tight combo featuring stellar saxophonists Fred Vigdor and Cliff Lyons. Sure, fans were there for “Pick Up The Pieces,” “Cut The Cake,” and “Work To Do,” but the off-the-charts musicianship and almost heavenly singing made this performance a true eye opener. The same can be said for Tower Of Power, Oakland's gift to funk that’s celebrating – brace yourelf – 50 years on the road. Still led by Emilio Castillo, the big, brassy bunch continues to pack a powerful punch, and their show hasn't changed amuch – even though new vocalist Marcus Scott (inset) suffers from oversinging-itis much of the time, even on classics. However, that's a slight quibble when watching and listening to a band so professional and swinging. Some members of AWB and TOP might need Just For Men, but their lively, enjoyable shows are for everybody of all ages.

Other finalists in the six-bowler final shootout were Kameron Smith of Tobyhanna, Pensylvania ($500); Maniram Basdeo of Bronx, NY ($350); Rafael Ongjoco of Babylon ($300); Tony Dexter Jimenez of West Sapp Babylon ($275); and Dawn Vening of Mount Vernon ($250). The conventional wisdom that he was responsible for keeping The New York Islanders in our area has been mythified; the team’s $27 million television per annum broadcast rights contract with The MSG Network, which runs through 2031, combined with The National Hockey League’s understandable desire not to weaken its standing in the corporate capital of the world, were far bigger factors. What’s indisputable was that Wang gave blind loyalty to underlings who ran the franchise

into the ground; the team’s owners still turn a willful blind eye to the shabby treatment of the press. It’s an insular culture that apparently won’t ever change.

Opens November 21 It’s the eighth Rocky film, and it’s the second Creed film as well – and, if box office tallies are any indication, the audiencepleasing performance of Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed is going to perpetuate this series for years to come. If advance word is any indication, this could be yet another #1 for a series that has produced some knockouts (Rocky, Rocky 3) and some films that fell flat onto the canvas (Rocky V, Rocky IV). This time out, it’s a familiar story, but a gripping one: Adonis is balancing his personal life with working out for this next big fight. It’s gonna be emotional as well as physical: The opponent is the son of the Russian monster Ivan Drago, who was, other than Apollo Creed (Adonis’ father), the most serious opponent of Rocky Balboa’s career. According to the press notes: “Rocky Balboa is there by his side through it all and, together, Rocky and Adonis will confront their shared legacy, question what's worth fighting for, and discover that

nothing's more important than family.” This is for sure: In 2018, Rocky-themed films are far more popular than actual boxing is. That’s in large measure to the genius of Sylvester Stallone, who knows his acting limitations but who also can produce scripts full

of humanity and compassion. Consider: The first Rocky movie, which took both the film and sports worlds by storm, was released in 1976. Stallone’s status as one of cinema’s most incredible success stories will go down in history as an unprecidented achievement.

Mohegan Sun (CT): So much is happening at Connecticut's Mohegan Sun that we're devoting this issue’s column to it: Lots of changes are happening at this popular destination spot this winter. Mohegan Sun’s Comix club is expanding to include Roadhouse, a new country bar and restaurant. The upgraded state-ofthe-art venue will provide true "roadhouse" entertainment, featuring live country music, mechanical bull riding, a Texas-style food menu, 30 craft beers on tap, a full bar, and even line dancing. Guests can enjoy a mix of regional country bands, local performers, and entertainment on the new Roadhouse stage. The club will continue to offer its popular stand-up comedy and alternative entertainment in the Comix Comedy Club section

The Rowdmuda Triangle is one of the immersive experiences that Elrow puts on in more than 70 cities throughout the world. The idea is unique but simple enough that has me thinking why don’t other people do this all the time? This is a carnival for grownups, and will put you into a different world. The theme is about a giant storm tipping over a sailboat, getting eaten by a giant beast, and leaving everyone underwater for the “Party Of Eternal Happiness” inside the monster's belly. As you can imagine, the event will be decked out from side-to-side with thousands of custom-designed decorations, 150 costumed performers, and some incredible talent in Steve Lawler, Yousef, De La Swing, wAFF, Acid Mondays, and Andres Campo. I have been to a lot of music festivals and concerts in my time, and this experience is going to be like no other. Elrow goes above and beyond to make you feel like you are one with your surroundings, and it’s truly awe inspiring. Robert Wagner Honored At Gold Coast Arts Center’s Film Festival Gala

The Gold Coast Arts Center in Great Neck recently honored actor Robert Wagner, who received the second annual Burton Moss Hollywood Golden Era Award in recognition of his career that began in 1950 with his film debut in The Happy Years. The event raised funds for the nonprofit Arts center and its Gold Coast International Film Festival, which started on November 2. Joining Wagner was his wife, actress Jill St. John; his daughter, Courtney Wagner, actress Sharon Gless and her husband, producer Barney Rosenzweig, and Princess Yasmin Aga Khan. Talent agent Budd Burton Moss also attended the event in tribute to his childhood friend. Diane Baker and Larry King sent best wishes via video. Also in attendance were Harriet Fields, granddaughter of the late W.C. Fields, and renowned film historian and film professor, Foster Hirsch, who moderated a discussion with Wagner before the presentation of the award. This is different, from an artist that is totally different: Tove Lo has released her latest short film titled Blue Lips. Starring Tove Lo and Ana Coto, the short features music from her album of the same title, and was co-written by the Swedish artist and director Malia James. Blue Lips follows the nighttime adventures of friends Ebba (Lo) and Kit (Coto), as they blur the lines between reality, sex, and their friendship, dipping in and out of induced highs, lows, nightclubs, and bathtubs. Little Steven Is Big On Education

Little Steven & The Disciples Of Soul's “Teacher Solidarity Tour” has registered more than 10,000 teachers to use The TeachRock Music History Curriculum. The tour is accepting registrations as it continues through December 16. Stevie Van Zandt, who refers to educators as the "front line in the war on ignorance," launched the tour to demonstrate his support for teachers at a time marked by wage cuts, crumbling school infrastructure, a lack of funding, and widespread teacher strikes. More than moral support, the tour presents a nightly workshop – a lesson in which RRFF staff and Van Zandt himself present concepts and content that empower K-12 teachers of all disciplines to use music in their classrooms. As Van Zandt puts it: "This is a little different than the professional development experience you may be used to. This is a rock & roll experience."

The Inside Story at the L.I. Music Hall of Fame Awards They came on skateboards and in limos, in wheelchairs and with walkers, all there for one purpose, to honor the 2018 inductees into The Long Island Music Hall of Fame at The Space at Westbury. I was humbled by the crush of fans as our 1963 Thunderbird pulled up to the Red Carpet. This was the largest turnout of humanity since the Trump inauguration; the historic moment was not lost on me. Now I know how Paul McCartney feels. The crowd, many who had been camped out since 6 am to get a view of the famed publisher nd the other inductees surged towards the car, holding up copies of Good Times, shouting “1262”, “1262” which was either a reference to the fact this was our 1262nd issue or that the LIRR was due at 12:62. How to get out of the car and onto the Red Carpet? Easy ... someone shouted out “This guy’s not Billy Joel,” and soon the crowd parted. Pushing past the TV and press cameras, we made our way to our table, which was right up front. Already seated was my presenter, Jackie “The Jokeman” Martling and his girlfriend, both looking rather spiffy. Jackie looks particularly fit, it’s apparent he doesn’t spend his time at Chinese buffets like yours truly. Also at our table was the legendary Seymour Stein, who discovered Madonna, Blondie and just about anyone else who counts, sitting next to WLIR superstar Dennis McNamara. The awards started promptly at 8:30: Let the show begin! Early inductees included Eliot Murphy, who put on a regal set, and “Hired Gun” inductee Tommy Byrnes, who plays with Billy Joel, Joan Jett, you name it. Before he went up, I apologized to Tommy for the 1976 Good Times review of his band, The BMTs. He ripped the place apart, it’s easy to see why all these famous musicians want him to be part of their band. Throughout the night, hundreds of members of the audience came over to our table for autographs, and the occasional comment, “You don’t look as old as I thought you’d be. You have a young voice.” Someone tell that to my body. Soon, the second biggest moment of the night: Billy Joel arrived with his wife and young daughter, and were seated at

Had to put a leg clamp on Jackie, since it looked liked he was going to bolt at any minute; he kept mumbling something about having to get to the gym. Finally, Jackie and I were in the wings onstage, and after 200 kids from the local school performed an excellent number honoring their teacher, it was our turn. Jackie came out, did a spectacular introduction that out of kindness to our audience was only a minute and a half long. The man knows timing. Then it was my turn; I love being onstage, and could easily have gone on for several hours, but was advised by Barry Fisch earlier, “Make it quick, we’re running late.” So, four hours and 15 minutes after we had started, I gave my schtick, told the usual Hendrix and Duane Allman stories, and absorbed the vibes. It was great. Aside from thanking my third grade school teacher who had put me in remedial speech because I had a lisp, I want to thank Ernie, Barry, Jim, Norm and the whole LIMHOF crew, who did a remarkable job putting this together. You can’t imagine how much work goes into this. Also want to thank my editor Bob Smith, Craig Cardone, my art director, and two unsung heroes, Barry Oliver and Paul Timmons, who have delivered Good Times to more than 400 locations for a combined 32 years.
