FABULOUS FOLK-JUST WILD ABOUT HARRY The annual “Just Wild About Harry” tribute concert will feature 18 of Long Island’s top musicians and songwriters as they perform the music of Harry Chapin, the late Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and social activist. Acts include concert organizer Stuart Markus and his trio Gathering Time – performing some of Chapin’s classics including “Taxi” and “Cat’s in the Cradle,” plus many lesser hits and fan favorites like “WOLD” and “Story of a Life.” This year’s tribute concert, which was rained out on its original summer date marking the anniversary of Harry’s death, has been repurposed into a birthday celebration. Chapin would have turned 81 on Dec. 7. Stuart Markus, the concert’s organizer, says, “For 19 years, the Long Island music community has come together to commemorate Harry by playing his songs around the anniversary of his tragic passing. This year, we’ll be celebrating his life with a birthday bash.” Like in past shows, participating artists will be encouraged to put their own interpretations on his songs. “We’ve had some amazing arrangements, from folky to country, from torchsong style to hard rock.” All profits will be donated to Long Island Cares, the food bank founded by Chapin. A donation pledged by philanthropist Roger Tilles will offset some of those costs. It will take place December 4th - 7:30 p.m. at The Landmark On Main Street, Port Washington. SPORTS BEAT Big East commissioner Val Ackerman was the WNBA’s first commissioner. She was one of the many sports notables who attended the annual Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis annual dinner in midtown Manhattan which was held last month. When I asked if she was rooting for the Liberty, she did not hesitate. “Yes! The Liberty is an original franchise, and it would be great for the league if they won the championship. Joe Tsai has done a fantastic job as a team owner.” Alas, the Liberty were defeated by the Las Vegas Aces in four games. The Aces are the first team in WNBA history to repeat as champions. Ackerman is cautiously upbeat about the St. John’s University Red Storm men’s basketball team which is now coached by Rick Pitino. “Their fans should be excited but should also have realistic expectations this year.” Rick Pitino was enjoying the give and take with the press at last month’s Big East Media Day. I asked him about guard Chris Ledlum who is attending graduate school at St. John’s. “Have you ever coached a Harvard man?” I asked. “Probably not. He is finally at a real institution of higher learning!” he replied. I heartily concur, especially
given recent events. Center Joel Soriano is one of the few holdovers from last season, while guard Daniss Jenkins followed Pitino

from Iona to St. John’s. I asked them if they have been able to capitalize on name, image, and likeness deals which have become an important form of compensation for college athletes. They both said they are concentrating on basketball and that winning will
lead to good endorsement deals. The aforementioned Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis was started by the late NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Nick Buoniconti when his son Marc suffered a spinal cord injury playing football for the Citadel in 1985. In the thirty-eight years since that fateful day, the Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis, which is based at the University of Miami’s medical college, has made tremendous strides in getting people ambulatory who otherwise would be relegated to wheelchairs for the rest of their lives. Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Jim Thome was honored by the Buoniconti Fund. Thome told me he likes the new rules which make pitchers work faster and prevent hitters from stepping out of the batter’s box at will. Another honoree was Jim Furyk who was a star on the PGA Tour for years, Furyk now competes on the PGA Champions Tour which is more commonly known as the senior tour. He would like to see the Champions Tour make stops in the New York area. Furyk smiled when I told him I watched such links legends as Chi Chi Rodriguez and Lee Trevino compete in a senior tour event held in Nassau County’s Eisenhower Park.

The Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health is another nonprofit which has a significant sports heritage as it was started by the late tennis icon Arthur Ashe shortly before his death thirty years ago. The missions of the AAIUH are to provide health services and education in nontraditional areas as barber shops and nail salons, and to provide funding and support to economically disadvantaged students who have an interest in careers in the various health sciences. Last Thursday, the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health held their

WOMEN WHO ROCK
JAZZY RELEASES HER DEBUT EP Continuing her ascent as one of dance music’s most prominent new artists, Irish DJ and vocalist Jazzy released her debut EP, Constellations via Astralwerks Records. Constellations is a collection of six tracks, including the massive club hits “Giving Me” and ‘Feel It (Club Edit)’, alongside the new track “Stardust.” The EP comprises a feature from vocalist Charlotte Plank on “Empty Promises” and production from Belters Only, D.O.D, Hannah Laing, Jordan Riley, Jacob Manson and Karma Kid. Jazzy has rapidly become a face of contemporary Irish Dance music. Her debut single “Giving Me” reached number one in Ireland. She is the first Irish woman to do so in 14 years which established her as a global ambassador for her homegrown music scene. The track continued to rise, reaching number three on the UK Official Singles Chart and earning over 75 million streams worldwide.
KIM PETRAS ‘FEED THE BEAST WORLD TOUR’ In Austin recently, entering the stage concealed in an iron maiden, Kim launched into “Feed The Beast” before treating audiences to “King of Hearts” from debut album Feed The Beast and hit single “Unholy.” Split into five distinct sections based on the story of Dante’s Inferno and helmed by director Will Baker (Kylie Minogue) and choreographers Brian and Scott Nicholson (Ariana Grande), the world-class show traversed Kim’s discography and her greatest hits – which included a provocatively curated can’t-miss section devoted to sex-positive EP Slut Pop before transitioning in to her spooky, Halloween-themed mixtape TURN OFF THE LIGHT. With mesmerizing costuming designed by Seth Pratt, Kim delivered a tightly choreographed and immaculately produced show worthy of a bygone era of pop. Moving between fan-favorite “Claws” and a theatrical reimagining of early hit “Hillside Boys,” the man in the song is revealed in a jaw-dropping moment to be a pre-taped, masculine version of Kim in a hyper realistic, muscled silicone body suit – a moment that saw the crowd erupt into an explosion of shocked screams. Kim closed out the night with fanfavorites “Alone,” (which features diamond-selling hip-hop icon Nicki Minaj), “Heart To Break” and the live debut of the title track from her recent, surprise album Problematique.
SNOW WIFE MIXTAPE QUEEN DEGENERATE Heavily influenced by multiple genres including pop, alternative and rap music, developed with her close collaborators slush puppy and Jason Hahs, and heavy hitters such as Dr. Luke, KBeaZy and Rocco Did it Again!, SNOW WIFE’s debut project QUEEN DEGENERATE is out under independent publishing company Prescription Songs and label counterpart Amigo Records. Listen to SNOW WIFE’s QUEEN DEGENERATE mixtape: https://snowwife.ffm.to/queendegenerate The viral and sensational dancer-turned-songwriter SNOW WIFE flaunts her musical versatility among the mixtape’s seven tracks. Kicking off with “HIT IT” featuring Big Boss Vette which was released earlier this week, the Houston native who now calls LA home dives into a variety of party-ready confections in the name of sex, fun and fantasy. QUEEN DEGENERATE wraps with SNOW’s single “AMERICAN HORROR SHOW” which on its own has garnered over 16 million streams across all streaming platforms,

RÊVE DEBUT ALBUM “SATURN RETURN” Dance-pop multi-platinum singer-songwriter, Rêve’s debut album, Saturn Return, is out now via Astralwerks. The full-length album features 13 lyrically driven songs that provide listeners equal parts emotional catharsis and crystalline pop confection while paying tribute to dance music, past, present, and future. The lead track for Saturn Return will be “Ex Ex Ex (Whoops)”. Saturn Return is produced by pop architects Banx & Ranx (Dua Lipa, Little Mix) and Grammy-nominated producer Carl Ryden (Kylie Minogue). When working with Banx & Ranx and Carl Ryden, Rêve says that she established a trust in every session that allowed her to meld songwriting and sound in such a way that the music just began to flow. To Rêve, Saturn Return is a time capsule; a personal look into Rêve’s diary throughout her personal metamorphosis while simultaneously paying tribute to her first great love: dance music and her hometown, Montréal.
ERIN KAITH EP DOWN BAD VOL. 1 Erin Kaith’s new EP, Down Bad Vol. 1, is a testament to her rising stardom. The New York-raised, Filipino songstress has firmly established herself as one-to-watch in the R&B lane with her viral sensation “Down Bad” which recently climbed its way into the US Top 10 chart on TikTok with over 215k creations. Following up on the early promise she has shown, Erin has delivered a robust EP that includes the previously released single “See You.” Alongside its release, Kaith shares the music video for EP’s focus track, “Never Be The Same.” In the black and white clip, fans will find a pensive Kaith reflecting over all that has led to the inevitable end of a romantic relationship.
ABIGAIL BARLOW RETURNS WITH “ROCK BOTTOM” GRAMMY-award winner Abigail Barlow is back with “Rock Bottom,” the first track off her upcoming debut solo album Princess Pop, due out early 2024. A culmination of the past year’s ups and downs, “Rock Bottom” (co-written with Kings and Gus Ross, who also produced the track) is a statement from an artist who has reflected, learned, and grown - an artist who has realized that her voice and message continue to resonate powerfully as she looks ahead to the future. After contesting a lawsuit over her GRAMMY-award winning The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical as half of Barlow & Bear, “Rock Bottom” reflects on the experiences she’s had over the past year, paving the path forward, onward, and upward for Abigail as an artist. Abigail’s clever lyricism and killer hook sensibility create a unique Katy-Perry-pop-meets-Alan-Menken-musicaltheater-storytelling style, setting the stage for her new era of solo music. Princess Pop is the story of Abigail Barlow, weaving together her own experiences with inspiration from classic fairy tales to create glittering, theatrical popcraft. Two additional singles will be released this year following “Rock Bottom” before Princess Pop is released in early 2024.

THEATER: HOLIDAY MUSICALS This is a perfect time to catch up with some terrific musicals leaving Broadway in January: Not to be missed is the hilarious laugh-fest with heart “Shucked,” with Tony-winner Alex Newell’s show-stopping “Independently Owned” one of this season’s great delights. “Some Like It Hot,” also celebrates inclusion with Tony-winner J. Harrison Ghee’s character’s discovery that they might just like being nonbinary. Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford depart “Sweeney Todd” January 14. Meanwhile, “Wicked” celebrates 20 on Broadway. Laughter is on the menu with the first Broadway revival of the long-running 2005 hit, “Spamalot,” starring Christopher Fitzgerald, James Monroe Iglehart, Ethan Slater, Michael Urie and Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer, under Josh Rhodes’ direction. Book writer, co-lyricist/composer, and former Python Eric Idle translates the 1975 cult film, “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” into an unconventional musical comedy which spoofs both the legend of King Arthur and Broadway musicals. $39 rush tickets are sold in-person at the box office. And there is a $44 digital lottery for every performance. (St. James Theatre) https://spamalotthemusical.com Acclaimed choreographer/director Graciela Daniele collaborates for a fifth time with composerlyricist Michael John La Chiusa in the new semi-autobiographical musical “The Garden of Anuncia.” Inspired by Daniele’s early life in the postWWII Argentina of Juan Peron, the tango-infused musical celebrates the family of women whose love and sacrifices enabled Daniele to fulfill her artistic dreams as a dancer, choreographer and director. Priscilla Lopez plays an older Anuncia, reflecting on her early life. Andrea Burns, Eden Espinosa, Mary Testa, Tally Session, and Kayln West co-star.

(Mitzi Newhouse Theater, Lincoln Center) https://www.lct.org/shows/gardensanuncia Featuring both newly created music and iconic songs by Alicia Keys, “Hell’s Kitchen,” (with book by Kristoffer Diaz) is loosely based on Key’s experiences growing up in New York’s Times Square neighborhood. In this coming-of-age musical about “race, defiance and growing up,” Maleah Joi Moon plays a 17-yearold who wants her piece of the American dream as fervently as her overprotective mother (Shoshana Bean) wants to keep her from making the same mistakes she did. Michael Greif directs with choreography by Camille A. Brown. (Public Theater) https://publictheater.org/ productions/season/2324/hells-kitchen Making their Broadway debuts, a cast of autistic actors reprise their roles from the Syracuse Stage’s world premiere of “How to Dance in Ohio.” Based on Alexandra Shiva’s Peabody Award-winning HBO documentary -- with book and lyrics by Rebekah Greer Melocik and music by Jacob Yandura -- the neurodiverse musical tells the true story of “seven autistic young adults preparing for a spring formal dance–a rite of passage that breaks open their routines and sets off hilarious and heartbreaking encounters with love, stress, excitement, and independence.” (Belasco Theatre) https://www. howtodanceinohiomusical.com

TECHNOBEAT It’s around this time of year when all the holidays seem to hit together and people are getting ready to spend time with loved ones. However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t still plenty going on in the EDM world, and boy has there been a ton of stuff happening and waiting to happen. I just got back from the Hulaween festival in Live Oak, FL and there’s just an endless supply of amazing things to be said about this festival. The lineup was super varied boasting top names from the jam band, funk, indand ie, electronic worlds. You can go from watching String Cheese Incident in the afternoon to seeing Manic Focus or Pretty Lights throw down at night. The stages were well organized and all unique in their own ways, keeping things interesting. The highlight of Hulaween is always Spirit Lake in my opinion. A small lake in the middle of a forest surrounded by everything from “bet whatever you have” blackjack, a maze of colorful and trippy artwork, and a lighting show over the lake that gets projected onto water spraying the air. It really transports you into a different world and you could spend hours just exploring the grounds and seeing everything there is to offer. The House of Lost in Spirit Lake is a satanic take on a normal church with smaller artists, tantalizing installations, and drag shows popping up seemingly randomly. Take all this in and mix it with unlimited space for camping instead of being squished in a field and you have a recipe for a unique and life changing festival. Throw in some sets by Goose, Trey Anastasio Band, Inzo, Boogie T, Yung Bae, and Lettuce to make it a weekend you’ll remember. This is one of those must-see festivals and I guarantee you’ll want to come back every year after.
Taking a look forward, there’s a few amazing shows happening in the city in the next month. One of the ones I’m absolutely looking forward to the most is the Manic Daze Boogie Nights show. This is going to bring together Boogie T.rio and Manic Focus for a night of live music, jams, and bass. These two on their own are already such a treat to witness. They have the funky vibes and dancing energy mixed together with some bass to give it just that extra hit of fun that will have you moving nonstop. They’ll be joined by supporting act Marvel Years who brings live guitar playing into the mix with his show. I truly can’t express how incredible this show will be and it’s got a slew of talented musicians ready to bring the heat for you. It’s all happening at Brooklyn Bowl on November 24, the day after Thanksgiving. This will be the perfect time to take a break from the family and let loose for the night. After you check out that show, be sure to see house duo Sidepiece comprised of Nitti Gritti and Party Favor teaming up to deliver a style that isn’t their individual norm but they have perfected during their time together. They’ll 20 • Good Times Magazine - November 17 - December 15, 2023

be playing on December 1 at Avant Gardner. And while I’ve got that venue on your mind, make sure you check out house icon Chris Lorenzo there on December 9 to keep the groove going until the wee hours of the morning One of my favorites just announced an upcoming album and has released the first four songs as a standalone EP for the time being. LSDream dropped some heavy hitting bass funk tracks on his EP HEARTWAVE. He’s got some features on there including Xotix, Elephant Nitti Gritti Heart, GorillaT, Ruby Photo courtesy Insomniac Chase, Joey Valence, and Brae. Each track is special in its own way but the top one for me would have to be “LFG”. It’s got that signature LSDream sound with just a little extra spice to give it some serious life and bounce. “OPERATE” gives a tribal sound with some half time breakbeats and chopped up vocals (with some classic LSDream bass) to provide an immersive experience that will stand out in the crowd of music these days. “RAD” adds hip-hop into the mix with mixing to make it feel like the old school 90s vibes are right there in your living room. I can’t wait for the full length album to drop and see what else he’s got planned for us. Thanks for tuning in this time and feel free to reach out at richiegtechno@ gmail.com. Keep raging my friends!

METAL NEW DOKKEN STUDIO ALBUM An unapologetic celebration of everything Dokken do best, yet now through a wiser and richer lens, Heaven Comes Down, the 13th studio album from the legendary American rockers, was released on October 27th. “The long anticipated new Dokken album, ‘Heaven Comes Down’, is finally done and the first single is titled ‘Fugitive’!” declares Don Dokken. “The inspiration for the lyrics came from what seems to me to be an uncertain world these days. It’s an up-tempo rocker as are many on the album. I don’t know what the future holds for our world, so I decided to take a step back and watch it all unfold… Yes, I guess I’ve become like many these days a fugitive from life. Hence the title!” Mixed by Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith, Iron Maiden, Joe Bonamassa) and produced by Bill Palmer and Don Dokken, fans will love it, neutrals will be wonderfully surprised by some of the ingredients within Heaven Comes Down. WINGER’S 1988-1993 ALBUMS IN BOX SET One of the most-aired hard rock bands on MTV during the late ‘80s and early ‘90s was Winger, a band who had it all – expert chops, chart success, arena tours, etc. And now for the first time ever, the band’s best-selling albums will be compiled together in the new box set, Chapter One: Atlantic Years 19881993 – released on November 17th via Atlantic/BMG, and will be available as both vinyl and CD versions. Included will be the band’s self-titled debut from 1988 (which spawned the hits “Madalaine,” “Seventeen,” and “Headed or a Heartbreak”), In the Heart of the Young from 1990 (which gave us “I Can’t Get Enuff,” “Miles Away,” and “Easy Come Easy Go”), and Pull from 1993 (which contained “Down Incognito”). And long-time fans of the band – whose classic line-up was comprised of singer/bassist Kip Winger, guitarists Reb Beach and Paul Taylor, and drummer Rod Morgenstein – will probably be most intrigued by the inclusion of the fourth disc, Demo Anthology, which includes original demo versions of Winger’s biggest hits. To obtain all of Winger’s definitive LP’s in one fell swoop, Chapter One: Atlantic Years 1988-1993 covers all the bases – and then some!
‘PRONG ‘STATE OF EMERGENCY’ PRONG will made their eagerly anticipated return with the release of their 13th studio album, ‘State of Emergency’, via Steamhammer/SPV, Now, following their brutally honest latest singles “Breaking Point” and “Non Existence”, the heavy metal cornerstones unveil their follow up entitled, “The Descent”, accompanied by a new music video. The track is a perfect blend of that impeccable recipe of punk, metal and thrash that makes up PRONG’s signature sound, and shows Tommy Victor and the boys are primed and ready to tear some faces off with ‘State of Emergency’! About the new single, “The Descent”, PRONG’s main man had this to say, “’The Descent’ has a narrative of isolation, confusion, and hopelessness due to the intervention of media.” 22 • Good Times Magazine - November 17 - December 15, 2023

WHITNEY HOUSTON IN FOCUS WHITNEY HOUSTON IN FOCUS is the only filmed story of its kind about Whitney Houston. It focuses on her early years, 1982 to 1986 – pre-fame and in the first blush of stardom – and is told from the perspective of photographer Bette Marshall. After seeing an unknown Whitney perform, Bette had the idea to document the story of a singer on the verge. Bette was given access by the Houston family to capture a young Whitney at home, auditions, early performances – even in church. The film is structured around 10 photo sessions that Bette had with Whitney during these years and gives a rare and intimate account of Whitney’s rise to fame. It can be streamed through Sunday, November 26, 2023. It is based on YOUNG WHITNEY: Stories and Photographs by Bette Marshal
