At press time, there were a handful of area venues posting limited tickets available for upcoming shows, thanks to New York State now allowing venues to bring back limited patrons. Here is more welcome news for those who have been cooped up inside for more than a year: Old Westbury Gardens reopened to visitors on April 1, displaying sights such as spring bulbs in the Walled Garden and the lust Thatched Cottage Garden. This year, the state's COVID19 regulations have permitted the site to open on time. Westbury House will remain closed to visitors in April and May; the venue anticipates opening for self-guided tours in June. The Good Times
There is a rumor going around that a publisher's life is like a dog's life, every year is equal to seven dog years. I believe this rumor to be true. If it is, then I have been doing Good Times for 364 years, which puts me up there with Yoda and Professor Dumbledore. It certainly feels like its been that long. I started Good Times 52 years ago, on April Fool's Day, figuring I'd claim it was just a joke if it didn't work out. Thought I'd do it for a year or two to get free albums and Woodstock tickets.Now I have 20,000 albums, never made it to Woodstock (although Music Editor Jay Berman did and sent us the story). Before starting Good Times, I turned down a job with Jimi Hendrix doing publicity for Michael Goldstein Agency, mainly because a) It paid $75 a week b) It was a 3 month trial c) The main part of the job was not publicity, but collecting money from club owners where Jimi per-
registered that name. Sitting on a table at Merlin, I came up with the name Action World. That sounded kind of cool, like it was about lots of fun things. Unfortunately, the name more often than not sounded like we were a porn newspaper, in the days when Screw and dozens of porno papers were on every newsstand. So, the name changed to Crew Circa 1975 Good Times. That said it formed. Instead, I took a all. We closed for seven months, couldn't be sure if we could re-open. Finally we re-opened in October, publishing monthly for now instead of every two weeks. I've attended two press conferences in the last few days with performing arts center operators and politicians. They all seem hopeful that we're starting to see the light. The new relief act Save Our Stages will put money into venues’ pockets to help them along. Howeer, with attendance limited to 100, it doesn't make economic sense to book national acts. Also, clubs are still burdened by the must serve food mandate with live music. We're hanging in, but have to admit, it's barely. We need a super push from somewhere – but thanks to you, our readers and advertisers, we're still going.

Walt Itgen's Ice Cream Parlour, Valley Stream (516) 825-7444 A Valley Stream tradition since 1936, Itgen's is truly a blast from the past – but the biggest blast will be the amazing flavor your get from the shop's succulent ice cream, available in a mind-boggling array of flavors (and seemingly endless toppings, to boot). The place is famous for its incredible “Sock It To Me Sundae”: Fifteen scoops with a veritable ton of toppings for $29.95. From ice cream junkies to one-scoopers, this is a must-get-to eatery (there's a full food menu as well).
McNulty's Ice Cream, Miller Place (631) 474-354 A sign of the times, but it's most welcome: Our ice cream-loving pals fave about McNulty's efficient curbside pickup, which is obvisously so essential at this moment in time. Of course, it's the ice cream that's the draw: Hard and soft ice cream, Italian Ices, and made to order cakes are specialties. McNulty's even has a mobile ice cream parlor that’s nicknamed Mable. It's a beautiful, clean store that is worth visiting just for the décor and classic vibe.

You'll have your choices of lots of flavors, as well as crepes, pops, frozen frappes, and our favorites: The dei Coltelli milkshakes, which are a true experience and blended so masterfully that you'll be tempted to order a second one.

This classic eatery is known by many first and foremost as a diner, but it's just as renowned for its vast array of flavors of gelato that are scooped onto Belgian waffles – quite an international experience, indeed. Some area ice cream addicts brag that they've tried every one of the Cafe's flavors, which now number more than 85 and may very well be more than 100 at this writing. Fun fact: The owner of The International Delight Café is the granddaughter of the founder of Jahn's, the famed Queens ice creamery. Henry’s Confectionery, Glen Cove (516) 671-3222 Ice cream and a soda fountain: Let us repeat that and add some info: Homemade ice cream. It's as nostalgic as it sounds: “I felt like I was visiting Mayberry and expected sheriff Andy Taylor to walk in with Floyd the barber,” wrote an impressed Yelp reviewer. If you're in to ice cream floats and egg creams, this is nirvana. Be sure to check out the old-time displays, including one featuring vintage Coca-Cola items.
Star Confectionary, Riverhead (631) 727-9873 This legendary eatery is known by most Riverhead residents as “Papa Nick's.” It's a quint, small luncheonette, but for our purposes, let us let you know that the draw for ice cream fans is its working old-time soda fountain. There's an array of traditional treats in the offing, including its massive, legendary Banana Royale sundae. We love the last line on the menu: “Party like it's the 1920s: Cash Only.” Awesome. Herrell's Ice Cream, Huntington (631) 673-1100 Kids are attracted to the logo of a bear enjoying a dish of ice cream, but trust us: Adults are crazy about Herrell's as well. If the name sounds familiar, it should: This is the only Herrell's Ice Cream franchise located outside of Massachusetts, where is a legendary name. Herrell's originated many of the treats that others emulated, including popular cookies and candies like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Heath Bars, and Oreos that are mixed into ice cream – regulars know these concoctions are called the “Smoosh-in.” Fun fact: The owner of Herrell's is the leader of the area cover band White Fire, one of the most popular club acts in Long Island history.

SPORTS BEAT New York Mets team president Sandy Alderson addressed the media early last month and basically laid out his philosophy on running a baseball club. The veteran former general manager acknowledged he has always favored offense over defense, perhaps to the point where it may have cost his teams occasional wins. He said he would pay more attention to fielding in the future, but warned that “if a player can’t hit, he’s not playing.” Alderson certainly didn’t make any friends amongst the Flushing faithful when he declared he had no regrets about not signing a player they desperately needed in free agent centerfielder George Springer, who was inked to a six-year $125 million contract by The Toronto Blue Jays. “At some point, even Steve Cohen runs out of money,” quipped Alderson about the new Mets owner, who is worth more than $14 billion according to

Alderson became more serious as he discussed the importance of every team to have the right balance between having player certainty through long-term contacts and financial flexibility, as well the freedom to rejuvenate the roster when needed. This will be a big year for Marcus Mets starter (and Patchogue Stroman native) Marcus Stroman for numerous reasons. A Farewell To Legends: Pete Weber and Walter Ray Williams Jr., two of the greatest players in PBA Tour history, announced their respective retirements on March 17 following PBA Scorpion Championship best-of-five match play from the World Series of Bowling XII at AMF University Lanes in Tampa. Weber, a 37-time PBA Tour champion, is the only player to win the U.S. Open five times as well as the only player ever to win the Triple Crown (PBA World Championship, Tournament of Champions and U.S. Open) twice. Williams (left) holds the record with 47 PBA Tour titles, eight majors among them. He’s been named the PBA Player of the Year a record seven times, the first in 1986 and the last in 2010, when he was 50 years old. Mike “Doc” Emrick, the most famous hockey play-by-play voice who retired from NBC Sports in 2020, has published an autobiography, Off Mike (Triumph Books). The Indiana native discusses how he developted his affinity for hockey by watching the minor league Fort Wayne Komets. Emrick also admits a deep love for baseball – and in particular The Pittsburgh Pirates, because he would listen to the team’s games on the 50,000-watt AM powerhouse radio station, KDKA. Hockey will be getting a lot of play in a pair of TV series. The popular 1990s film

Emilio Estevez returns as Gordon Bombay, the Minnesotan who has a love-hate relationship with hockey. Fox has just launched “The Moodys” (Thursdays, 9:30 pm) starring the delightfully irascible Denis Leary as a patriarch with three adult slackers living in his Chicago home. Leary was a superb amateur hockey player, and there are a lot of hockey scenes in “The Moodys.” One of Leary’s sons in the show is played by Jay Baruchel, who starred in Tom the 2011 movie Goon, an homage to Paul Newman’s 1977 classic about minor league hockey life, Slap Shot. If you are looking for a TV comedy which generates belly laughs, “The Moodys” is appointment viewing. Basketball has always been a popular cinematic sport, and the latest entrant is
Boogie starring newcomer Taylor Takahashi as Queens high school hoops phenomena Alfred “Boogie” Chin. Although Boogie is a Bob talented player, he hasn’t Smith received a scholarship offer from a top-tier college. Boogie’s dad tells him the only way to get the attention of recruiters is to beat a team led by the best street hoops player in NYC, a guy known as Monk (Bashar “Pop Smoke” Jackson.) The film, written and directed by Eddie Huang (who makes it clear he’s not impressed by former Knick Jeremy Lin), was shot in six weeks – and it shows as the Seaver basketball choreography is not up to snuff. The “Boogie versus Monk” storyline feels hollow from the get-go. On the other hand, the acting is terrific, and the unflinching look at Boogie’s family life make this a worthy film to catch. The film is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

The Long Island Ducks are set to begin their 21st season in the Atlantic League. They are the longest-running active member of the league, and the longest-running sports franchise in Suffolk County history. The team plays its home games at Fairfield Properties Ballpark in Central Islip. Since the team’s inaugural season in 2000, the Ducks have led the Atlantic League in attendance 14 times and have welcomed more than eight million to their home ballpark, a league record. On the field, the franchise has won four Atlantic League championships as well as eight division championships. In 2019, the Ducks had a record 15 players have their contracts purchased by Major League Baseball organizations or foreign professional leagues. Since their inception, 21 players have reached the Major League level after playing with the Ducks. The 2021 season begins on May 28 when the Ducks host The Lexington Legends at 6:35 pm. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Replica Championship Rings. The team will host a pre-game ceremony to raise their 2019 Atlantic League championship banner. The Ducks have announced the signings of 11 players as well as their coaching staff, six with MLB experience, including Mike Bolsinger, Lew Ford, Johnny Hellweg, Steve Lombardozzi, Michael Tonkin, and Rob Zastryzny. Six players return from the championship team, including Brendan Feldmann, Ford, Clint Freeman, Joe Iorio, Lombardozzi, and Tonkin. The Ducks are led by manager Wally Backman, a member of the 1986 World champion New York Mets. Tickets are currently on sale. For the 2021 season, individual tickets will be sold at 50 percent of capacity in each section available for purchase to help maintain social distancing. Additionally, seating will be on a general admission basis in each section, with fans purchasing tickets for assigned sections rather than assigned seats. Long Island Cares Establishes ‘Music Box Of Meals’
The economic fallout caused by the COVID-19 pandemic continues to negatively impact industries across Long Island more than a year later. In that ligt, Long Island Cares did what it does best: It created a new program to assist anyone in the entertainment industry in need of emergency food assistance Long Island Cares has established a Music Industry Council to carry out the vision of the organization’s founder, singer/songwriter Harry Chapin. The Council is comprised of members in the music and entertainment industries on Long Island and seeks to further our founder’s message. During a recent meeting, the committee addressed the ongoing concerns and needs affecting the entertainment industry, which have left many artists out of work with little to no source of income. In response to this crisis, The Music Industry Council established the “Music Box of Meals” initiative. The prepacked food boxes will be given out at the following locations, and the program is open to residents of Long Island in

The Return Of A Legend: Six-time Grammy nominee Maria Muldaur continues her exploration of the great American roots music songbook. On her latest excursion – this time into the vintage jazz and blues sounds of the 1920s/’30s – she teams up with New Orleans street band Tuba Skinny for Let’s Get Happy Together, set for release on May 7 on Stony Plain Maria Records. This marks Muldaur Muldaur’s 43rd album release in a long and storied career (and her ninth on Stony Plain). The Crescent City has always been a favorite destination and inspiration for Muldaur, and that New Orleans feel permeates throughout the album’s 12 tracks. When she discovered the music of Tuba Skinny, she learned that just like her, these musicians study, play and immerse themselves in the early blues, jazz and jug-band music of the ’20s and ’30s. “They were not just playing a marvelous repertoire of cool tunes with great Alan Mercer skill and authenticity, but somehow channeling the very atmosphere and vibration of that bygone era,” said Muldaur. The star details how she first got turned on to Tuba Skinny: “A couple of years ago, while shopping in my favorite Woodstock, NY, clothing store, I heard the most wonderful vintage jazz joyously floating through the air! ‘How cool that the local radio station is playing this kind of music,’ I remarked to the shop owner, who informed me that we were not listening to the radio, but some CDs of a band called Tuba Skinny. She told me they were a band of young musicians, some originally from the Woodstock area, which now lived in New Orleans and performed on the streets and at many clubs and festivals there … She had to show me the CD covers before I would believe her!” Hey, Nineteen: A band that’s anything but a one-trick pony. Nineteen Hand Horse brings a rich pedigree to its debut album, Revel, set for release on May 21. This Northern California-based group also brings authenticity, country soul, and a wealth of experience to Revel, along with the unique male/female singer/songwriter partnership of Nathalie Archangel and Mark Anthony Montijo, a pair that harkens back to the glory days of George and Tammy, Johnny and June, and Dolly and Porter. Revel may be Nineteen Hand Horse’s first album, but the band members are no strangers to the music industry. Nathalie Archangel, a double platinum songwriter for her work on Bette Miller’s Some People’s Lives album, spent the early part of her music career recording well-received but under-promoted pop albums for Columbia and MCA. These did foreshadow the future, as Nathalie penned a couple of wonderful duets and enlisted the likes of Frankie Valli and Howard Jones as vocal partners on her MCA release, Owl. We can't think of anyone who wasn't thrilled with the news of the sequel to 1988's Coming To America, which even casual film fans rank as a favorite comedy. Adding fuel to the fire: Eddie Murphy and crew were able to assemble most of the original cast – even down to the bit players. However, going back 32 years – heck, even a few years – to revive a hit is always a daunting task. We can think of so many horrible attempts at trying to catch lightning in a bottle: Television re-dos of “Green Acres” and “The Odd Couple” were just faint vestiges of the once-hilarious sitcoms, and the productions were played for nostalgia instead of laughs. This time out, sure, there are jokes galore – they just aren't particularly funny. The former Prince Akeem (Murphy) is the king of Zamunda now, and he and his pal Semmi (Hall) return to Queens to once again, as it were, find a queen. Don't ask. The producers trot out all the (now old) familiar faces, give them little to do, and it all falls flatter than an unfilled burrito wrap – with the exception of the mock R&B group Sexual Chocolate, which is the one thing here that's absolutely as hilarious as it was the first time. If you’re in the mood for nostalgia? Tune in. It's the cinematic equivalent of looking at one of your dad's old holiday photos, shot by a guy who could barely figure out how to work the Polaroid – you'll giggle when you look at it, but you'll end up fishing for something else to view. – Cody Bell

(SONA), the Songwriter Fund was created by songwriters and for songwriters. Directed by an all-woman team of acclaimed songwriters Autumn Rowe and Michelle Featherstone with management by Sarah Robertson, the Songwriter Fund offers emergency grants to songwriters in need. It was launched with resources from SONA and SONY Music Publishing, amongst other private and corporate donations. “Everything dried up all at once for the
songwriting community: royalties from streaming, as well as the ability to do gig work or be a session player,” said Featherstone. “We were talking to fellow songwriters who were asking, ‘How will I pay this month’s rent? How will I buy groceries? Will I ever work again?’” It was out of this intense, desperate need that the Songwriter Fund was formed. “The Songwriter Fund is a resource for our community when there are no other options,” said Rowe. “Many writers who ran out of options received grants, and we were really grateful to help. I’d like the Songwriter Fund to feel like that friend who always has your back. Because there is so little overhead in our organization, the most possible money goes out to songwriters.” With the repercussions of the pandemic continuing to impact the music industry, the fund is still accepting donations as it gears up to provide another round of much-needed relief to songwriters, with applications opening April 28. A Veteran Musician’s New Single: Marshall Oakman Reaches ‘Boiling Point’
The famed New York-based singer/songwriter Marshall Oakman has released a new single, “At The Boiling Point” featuring national recording stars in Kasim Sultan (Utopia) on bass, Liberty Devitto (Billy Joel) on drums, and Paul Pesco (Madonna) on guitar. It is now available at Spotify and all major music services. At about six years of age, Oakman first fixed his eyes on a piano. Top 40 Forever: Spring is the time of the year when we annually examine the state of Top 40 radio – as always, the barometer of pop culture – even as the pandemic has slowed the music business as it has done to all entertainment. The type of songs that are “hits” seem to reflect the mood of the times. Sing-a-long up-tempo fun Dua tunes, a mainstay Lipa through the decades, are now a thing of the past – seemingly because physical sales are no longer a factor as they once were in the era of 45 RPM vinyl singles, and later, cassette singles. Streaming has put a whole new spin on how hits are determined in this era. One obvious factor on the current chart is Hugo Comte the continuing success of pop king Justin Bieber, whose current hit "Holy" is in maximum airplay mode. Bieber's new album has seen all its tracks in steady rotation on Z100, in the same way that The Beatles' albums would be programmed on 77WABC AM in the 1960s. Teen idols, obviously, still rule the roost. As has been the case for the last few decades, groups and bands are a thing of the past. Solo stars run the show, most of them female, many of them lamenting love life sorrows in their songs. Dua Lipa is the queen of 2021. Her "Levitating" is one of the few up-tempo songs standing out in the collection of dour dirges that kids are listening to at the moment. Olivia Rodrigo Cardi B has been at the top forever with "Driver's License," mournfully driving past the block where her ex now has a new girlfriend. Tate McRae brings things a step further with "You Broke Me First." The poor lass sounds like she's ready for the straitjacket. Cardi B livens things up with, well, "Up,” but that's what Cardi does. It's All Done With Pride: The Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation Joseph Llanes
has announced the creation of The Charley Pride Fellowship Program, offering rising college Juniors and Seniors a 10-week internship opportunity with the team’s front office. The new Fellowship Program honors the late country music legend, who had a strong connection to the Texas Rangers organization for more than 50 years. The details of the program were in the process of being finalized when Pride died on December 12, 2020 at the age of 86. Officials from the Texas Rangers were joined in making the announcement by Pride’s wife, Rozene Pride, his longtime friends and fellow country music stars Garth Brooks, Larry Gatlin, and Neal McCoy, and prominent Dallas businessman Roland Parrish, whose Parrish Charitable Foundation is partnering with The Rangers Foundation in The Pride Fellowship Program. The Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation established The Charley Pride Fellowship Program to help create a launching pad for students from diverse backgrounds looking to gain baseball front office Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation experience. The Foundation will hire, train and support five Fellows per year as they rotate through three front office departments. Fellows will select their departmental rotation based on their interests. The Charley Pride Fellowship Program creates an entirely new experience offered by The Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation; it does not take the place of any existing internships or full-time positions. These students will gain valuable cross-disciplinary skills that will benefit them should they choose to pursue a career in professional baseball or any other industry. If you may be too young to remember all this: Pride is an American country music icon that has exemplified military service, music entertainment, and America’s pastime, baseball. Having recorded more than 30 #1 hits with Grammy and Country Music Association Awards under his belt, Pride’s first love was always baseball. He pitched professionally in the Negro and Minor Leagues throughout the 1950s before embarking on his Hall of Fame singing career of more than 60 years. He then became a regular participant at Texas Rangers spring training camps in Pompano Beach and Port Charlotte, Florida, and Surprise, Arizona, working out with the team and staging an annual clubhouse concert for players and staff (pictured above) – a tradition that continued through the spring of 2020.

First Aid Kit has released Who By Fire, a live tribute album to Leonard Cohen, via Sony Sweden/Columbia Records. The 20-track recording was performed across two nights at the Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm in March 2017, and is a staging of Leonard Cohen’s songs, poems, and letters. Conceived by First Aid Kit, the Swedish sister duo were joined by an array of fellow Swedish guest artists, an eight-person band, strings, and two actors, as well as a choir on two of the songs. Who By Fire includes lead track “Suzanne” and “If It Be Your Will.”
