Brass sensation The Soul Rebels are riding high in 2021 after receiving national attention following the release of their new album, Poetry In Motion. The eight-member collective appeared on Def Jam artist Dave East and Nas’ “Godfather 4” single, Big Freedia and Icona Pop’s “Pipe That”, and reached fans with original singles “Greatness” featured as ESPN’s official College Hoops theme anthem, and “Good Time” featured on Netflix’s #BlackAF and Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! They’ll be appearing on April 9th at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. For tickets call 631-288-1500 or whbpac.org
Suffolk Theater presents THE ZOMBIES: Life Is A Merry-Go-Round Tour on Sunday, April 24 at 7:30PM. Tickets are $65 – $89, plus applicable fees; VIP Packages are available for $209. Tickets are available online at SuffolkTheater.com. Never content to only look back, The Zombies spent the Pandemic touring-hiatus in the studio recording the follow-up to their 2015 Billboardcharting album, Still Got That Hunger. The title for their 2022 tour - “Life Is A Merry-Go-Round” - is a lyric from one of the new songs, but is also a fitting description of the dizzying effect the past 2 years have had on the world. The band is led by founding members, vocalist Colin Blunstone and keyboardist Rod Argent; and the 21st-Century line-up features Steve Rodford on drums, renowned session guitarist Tom Toomey, and the newest member, Søren Koch, who joined the band following the untimely passing of their beloved bassist Jim Rodford (formerly of ARGENT and The Kinks) in early 2018.

donates 100% of the funds raised to animal rescue agencies here on Long Island. They are having their second annual fundraiser event on Sunday, March 27, 2022 at The Warehouse in Amityville from 2:30 to 7:30. Rockin4Rescue is partnering with Last Hope animal rescue and with Yorkie911 rescue for this event. Six great local bands will be playing sets throughout the day. The bands are Classic Clapton, Off The Record, Soapbox Messiah, Smokin Gun Band, Tribe & Carrie McQuade & the Allstars! All of the bands are generously donating their time and talent. Rockin4Rescue was founded by Bobbie & Curt Arnel as a vehicle to connect the music community and the animal rescue community. ALL the funds collected are donated to the rescue agencies who desperately need funds to pay for food, veterinarian bills, medicine, rent & utilities, treats, toys, etc. which are required to keep the animals safe and healthy. Many of the animals were rescued from bad situations including neglect and abuse. The ultimate goal is to raise awareness that these loving pets are available and deserve to be adopted and re-homed so that they can have a chance for a safe and normal life in exchange for their love and loyalty. That is why we say “Adopt, Don’t Shop.” There will be many great raffle prizes (coach bag, Tito’s vodka, gift certificates to Sam Ash, etc.) and many more plus a 50/50. Food and drink will be available for purchase. Suggested donation at the door is $10. You can see more info at their facebook page www.facebook.com/rockin4rescue. For any questions call 516-459-5704.

BROADWAY BLOSSOMS THIS SPRING “The Music Man” is just the tonic for the theater’s Omicron blues and winter doldrums. Boasting Meredith Willson’s tuneful, toe-taping score, Jerry Zak’s zippy direction and Warren Carlyle’s highstepping choreography, the lavish production showcases Hugh Jackman’s gifts as the consummate showman. His sheer joy at singing and dancing, extraordinary audience rapport and playful chemistry with Photo Credit: Joan Marcus tomboyish, feisty Sutton Foster make “The Music Man” an audience love-fest, justifying its enormous success if not its astronomical prices. Highly anticipated among the star-filled (limited run) revivals is “Plaza Suite”, in which husband and wife Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick star in Neil Simon’s 1968 hit, a trilogy of bittersweet one-act comedies set in Suite 719 at the Plaza hotel. First, they play a couple hoping to reignite their stale marriage at their honeymoon suite; then, he’s a movie producer who attempts to seduce his high school sweetheart, now a suburban housewife; then, they are parents attempting to coax their anxious daughter out of the hotel’s bathroom on her wedding day. TodayTix is offering $39 digital lottery tickets daily. (In previews; opening March 28; at the Hudson Theatre.) Tony Award-winner Sam Gold, who directed Daniel Craig as a chilling Iago in his 2016 “Othello,” now directs the James Bond star along with Oscar nominee Ruth Negga (“Passing”) as Shakespeare’s ambitious murderers in a hot-ticket new take on “Macbeth.” 2022 free tickets will be offered to students. (Previews begin March 29; opens April 28; Longacre Theatre.)
Plaza Suite
by Jane Klain
David Mamet’s 1975 profanity-laced Funny Girl robbery drama, “American Buffalo” sports an award-winning cast: Tonywinner Laurence Fishburne plays a Chicago junkshop owner who enlists as his poker buddy (Oscar-winner Sam Rockwell) and his dim assistant (Emmy-winner Darren Criss) to rob a customer who bought what may be a valuable coin. (Previews begin March 22; opens April 14; Circle in the Square.) The original stars Mary-Louise Parker and David Morse (again directed by Photo Credit: Polk & Co. Mark Brokow), return to the roles they created off -Broadway 25 years ago in Paula Vogel’s haunting, disturbing Pulitzer Prize-winning memory play “How I Learned To Drive,” about the complicated decades-long relationship between a girl and the uncle who molested her. (Previews begin March 29; opening April 19; Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.) Scott Ellis directs Jesse Tyler Ferguson (“Modern Family”), Jesse Williams (“Grey’s Anatomy”) and Patrick J. Adams (“Suits”) in a revival of Richard Greenberg’s 2002 Tony-winning “Take Me Out.” A rhapsodic ode to the art, sport and enduring mythology of baseball, the tragic and timely comedy concerns a mixed-race baseball star confronting deep-seated homophobia and racial bigotry when he comes out. (Previews begin March 10; Opens April 4; Hayes Theatre.) Beanie Feldstein has enormous shoes to fill as Fanny Brice, the role made famous by Barbra Streisand on Broadway in 1964 and in the award-winning film “Funny Girl” with the hit-filled score by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill. Ramin Karimloo costars as gambler Nick Arnstein and “Glee’s” Jane Lynch plays her mother. Harvey Fierstein has revised book (Previews begin March 26; Opens April 24; August Wilson Theatre.)

SPORTS BEAT Last month the New York Mets announced they would be having the first-ever Old-Timers Day at Citi Field August 27th before their game with the Colorado Rockies. The last time the Mets held an Old-Timers Day was in 1994 at Shea Stadium. And yes, 1994 was the last time Major League Baseball endured a work stoppage, as is the case today. Mets owner Steve Cohen cited the wishes of Mets fans on social media as the reason for reviving of OldTimers Day. An unsung hero in this relaunch is Mets VP of alumni affairs Jay Horwitz, who is the team’s former PR czar. His Rolodex of baseball contacts is unsurpassed. In 2019, the last year before any of us heard of Al Michaels COVID-19, Horwitz was able to attract retired Mets players every weekend the Mets were playing at home. The fans loved seeing some of their old favorites, and the players enjoyed the meet-and greet with them as well. That’s smart business. One of the subplots of Super Bowl LVI, which obsessed those in the media who cover the sports broadcasting industry, was the distinct possibility NBC NFL play-by-play voice Al Michaels might be broadcasting his last Super Bowl. He became a free agent as soon as the game ended. Al Michaels is a very good broadcaster but there are a lot of solid play-by-play voices. I have long felt he has received an outsized halo effect for his talent because of his famous “Do you believe in miracles?” line at the conclusion of the Team USA Men’s Hockey team’s 4-3 upset win over Team USSR at the 1980 Winter Olympics
8 • Good Times Magazine - March 15 - April 11, 2022
held at Lake Placid, New York. If Michaels doesn’t re-up with NBC, expect Whitestone native and Bayside High school alum Mike Tirico, to replace him on “Sunday Night Football.” I don’t consider that a decline in quality. Expect to see a lot of Magic Johnson this spring the Apple TV+ steaming service will be having a four-part series on his life titled “They Call Me Magic” which will debut on April 22. I asked Johnson if “They Call Me Magic” would touch upon his unsuccessful foray into syndicated late-night television, “The Magic Hour.” “Absolutely. I want to show both the successes and failures of my life. I need to show the audience the importance of getting back on your feet after you’ve been knocked down,” he forthrightly replied. Johnson’s tenure as the Los Angeles Lakers franchise star of the 1980s is being dramatized in a limited-run HBO series, “Winning Time.,” which is currently running on HBO. John C. Reilly portrays flamboyant Lakers owner, Dr. Jerry Buss, while Adrien Brody slicks back his hair to play legendary coach Pat Riley. Speaking of former NBA stars who are now dabbling in television, Dwyane Wade will be hosting “The Cube,” a game in which contestants face both intellectual and physical challenges as they try to beat the clock. Metta World Peace (the former Ron Artest) is one of nine celebrities who will be traipsing through the jungles of Panama for CBS’s new reality series, “Beyond the Edge.” .Showtime boxing voice Mauro Ranallo is channeling his inner Jeff Probst as he will serve as the show’s host.
By Lloyd Carroll The NBA is celebrating its 75th anniversary, and some buddies of mine: Rick Morris, Ben Chew, and Russ Cohen, have published a compact yet extremely thorough paperback titled “The Top 75 Players in Pro Basketball History. By not using “NBA” in their title, the authors were able to pay tribute to two stars who played most of their careers in the defunct American Basketball Association, Dan Issel and Artis Gilmore. Some obscure names made the cut as Joe Fulks and Neil Johnston while Connie Hawkins and Tim Hardaway did not. Let the debates begin! In ESPN news, Christopher Russo has joined Stephen A. Smith as a weekly Wednesday sparring partner on “First Take.” Peyton and Eli Manning have also agreed to continue their appearances on ESPN2 hosting an alternative version of “Monday Night Football” through 2024. The “Manningcast” is a production of Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions which also makes those very humorous Caesars Sportsbook television ads starring JB Smoove, Halle Berry, and of course, the Mannings.
Peyton Manning All Elite Wrestling (AEW) returns to the UBS Arena on May 11th. Expect native Long Islanders Maxwell Jacob Friedman and Max Caster to be headlining the card that night. The New York Jets are making in an investment in Long Island women’s high school sports by helping to fund a flag football league. This nicely coincides with the 50th anniversary of Title IX which has tried to put women’s sports on an even playing field with men’s in both high schools and colleges. The best value in Long Island sports has to be a Long Island Sharks hockey game at the Long Beach Municipal Ice Arena where the admission is free. The Sharks play in the NA3HL which is a widely respected juniors league which has teams in all parts of the country. Veteran hockey voice Ashley Scharge calls their games on Hockey TV which can be accessed via the Internet.

NAZARETH ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM Frontiers Music Srl announced the forthcoming release of legendary Scottish rock band Nazareth’s new studio album, “Surviving The Law” on April 15, 2022. Fans can get their first taste of new music from the band with the release of the single and video ‘Strange Days’. Watch the video: https://youtu.be/ayhBz4bM77Y Pre-order/save “Surviving The Law” on CD/LP/Cassette/Digital https://orcd.co/nazareth “Surviving The Law ‘’ continues the new chapter that started for the band in 2018 with the arrival of vocalist Carl Sentance. In 2014, original singer Dan McCafferty had to leave the band for health reasons and with his blessing, Sentance began fronting Nazareth. “Tattooed On My Brain” saw Nazareth a rejuvenated band with a hard rocking album that had all the ingredients that make this band so great in the first place. As with “Tattooed On My Brain”, “Surviving The Law” was produced by Yann Rouiller at Sub Station in Scotland. The album features songwriting by all band members and continues the trend established with the previous album, showing that 25 albums into their career, the fire of rock ‘n roll still burns as bright as ever at the core of Nazareth.
ANN WILSON FIERCE BLISS There is a calm, serene spirituality about Ann Wilson in 2022 which instantly draws you to her. She feels like a warm, wise someone who has seen enough bullshit to know how to avoid it calmly, and someone who is at peace with whatever she needs to be at peace with. Perhaps that is why the soul (and, indeed title) of her latest album, Fierce Bliss (set for release April 29 via Silver Lining Music) offers such universally entertaining, engaging, honest and safe harbor from these unpredictable times. Take “Greed,” the powerful first single… “‘Greed’ is that thing in our animal nature that makes us want MORE,” Wilson declares. “Whether it be money, sex, power or ecstasy, it fires our craving! It happens with all of us.” Fierce Bliss is classic rock comfort food of the finest ingredients, carrying a richness and light that allows you to escape into timeless nostalgia. 11 perfectly weighted and selected songs ranging from Wilson’s own co-penned originals to breathtaking covers and collaborations. “A Moment in Heaven” could easily apply to anyone who has seen their career suddenly bathed in a bright beam of glory before the spotlight is abruptly moved elsewhere. There is a deeply spiritual air about Ann Wilson 2022, and both “Black Wing” and “Angel’s Blues” show different facets of that soul and ethos. Furthermore, Wilson brings new life and verve to classic songs, such as Queen’s “Love of My Life” and Robin Trower’s “Bridge of Sighs.”

KISS ROCK ‘N’ ROLL GIN You wanted the best, you got the best — ice-cold KISS gin to go with your tonic! It’s what legions of U.S.-based KISS fans have been waiting for since the release of the band’s classic track “Cold Gin” in 1974 and can now order online from March 8th. You can now crank up the music and raise a glass of globally awarded KISS Cold Gin to unleash your inner rock star! Following the 2021 U.S. launch of KISS Rum Kollection under the new brand “Drink It Up by KISS,” the gin is the fourth product to complete the portfolio. Like the band, KISS Cold Gin is bold and uncompromising. Inspired by the band’s roots in New York City, KISS gin creates a taste explosion that’s always cranked up to 11. It’s only natural that rock titans, KISS, collaborated with an awardwinning company like Brands For Fans to create a product as pure as the rock ‘n’ roll they play. Having received two internationally recognized awards for quality, KISS Cold Gin has a five-time distilled base including juniper, lemon peel, and a selection of fine spices. There are no artificial flavors or added sweeteners. To maintain the highest quality, additional flavors of juniper and lemon are macerated and blended with the distillate, achieving a full balance of the botanical experience. “Now it REALLY is ‘Cold Gin time.’ If gin is your thing, then this is the one to bring. Like the song, this one’s a classic!” – Founding member of KISS, Paul Stanley. As you would expect, KISS Cold Gin doesn’t just taste great; it looks incredible too! Impress your friends with the stylish bottle, including eye-catching silver and gold details, with all four band members metallically illustrated on each side of the Brooklyn Bridge. The main label features a gold disc and the iconic landmarks of New York City and the Manhattan Skyline, while the stunning art deco pattern behind the disc is based on the scales of The Demon’s boots. The label artwork is a homage to KISSTORY and the band’s musical roots again; nonetheless, her fan base seems dedicated enough to turn up whenever she finally decides to do the same; the touring business in general is finally recovering from the ‘covid’ damage, good news for long suffering fans of live music.

Elemental Music, the transatlantic label devoted to rare and unissued archival jazz releases, will issue Chet Baker Trio Live in Paris, a three-LP set of expansive, lyrical ‘80s live performances by the great trumpetervocalist, as an exclusive Record Store Day package on April 23. The collection, also due as a two-CD set on April 29, will feature performances by Baker’s drumless trios, captured in Stereo by Radio France in 1983 and 1984. Both configurations will feature a deluxe booklet with essays by producer and “jazz detective” Zev Feldman, journalist-author Ashley Kahn, French journalist-photographer Franck Bergerot, and Pascal Rozat of Ina France; and interviews with Riccardo Del Fra and Dominique Lemerle, the bassists on the ’83 and ’84 concert dates, respectively, and pianist Richie Beirach, also a former Baker sideman. The musician is heard in remarkable form on Chet Baker in Paris, recorded in stereo by Radio France at La Esplanade de La Défense (July 17, 1983) and Le Petit Opportun (February 7, 1984). Both concerts are distinguished by the dazzling playing of the virtuosic pianist Michel Graillier, who performed regularly with Baker’s combos from 1977 until Baker’s death in 1988.

ANDY JAMES CELEBRATES While she grew up in Australia, traveled the world as a renowned Flamenco dancer, and now makes her home in Las Vegas, vocalist Andy James has always loved New York City – whether dreaming of the Big Apple from afar or exploring the always thriving jazz scene of the city as both listener and performer. On her latest album for Le Coq Records, James captures the vibrant tempo and exhilarating thrills always unfolding in the thoroughfares of the city that never sleeps. Due out April 15, Rhythm in New York features a mix of classic standards and original music inspired by life in Manhattan. As has become standard for Le Coq releases, the album boasts an unparalleled line-up of in-demand musicians. James’ key collaborator on Rhythm in New York is John Patitucci, who graces every track with his virtuosic bass playing but co-wrote several tunes with James and his daughter, singer-songwriter Greisun. They’re joined by pianist Jon Cowherd, drummers Nate Smith and Marcus Gilmore, saxophonists Chris Potter and Marcus Strickland, trumpeter Terell Stafford, flutist David Mann, guitarists Adam Rogers and Chico Pinheiro, and percussionists Alex Acuña and Rogerio Boccato. Additionally, Cowherd and Patitucci collectively arranged all 15 songs on the album. James so admires her collaborators that in at least one instance – her and Pata’s own “Just In Time” – she decided to remove her vocals altogether and let the band shine on their own. But throughout, from the enticing, Bossa-inflected opener “There Will Never Be Another You,” through the lush original ballad “Day Dream” and the Flamenco-inspired “El Ritmo,” to the wistful farewell of “I’ll Be Seeing You,” James finds endless inspiration in her adoration for the city.

WHEELS & DEALS JOE PIKET’S 2ND ENTERTAINER OF YEAR AWARD
CHRISTINE SWEENEY HEART IN A HURRY How did stop-you-in-your-tracks vocalist and songwriter Christine Sweeney go from singing along with zvv&B radio and tapes by Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Destiny’s Child as a kid to choice slots at the Connecticut Folk Fest and Falcon Ridge Folk Fest, airplay on WFUV, on bills with Graham Parker and Jill Sobule, and in a Paste Magazine 2021 session? To her, the R&B vocal influence isn’t unnatural in settings ranging from hushed folk stages to full band rock shows. Her music reminds her fans of Susan Tedeschi, Brandi Carlile, Sheryl Crow, KT Tunstall, or Grace Potter with music that grooves and rocks but also reveals her story. Her new album Heart In a Hurry, out April 22, generously dashes blues, pop, Americana, folk, and yes, R&B, in sharp, open-hearted songs, some drawn from hard-earned life lessons. Even when telling a deeply personal story, Christine has the ability to tap into universal feelings. Heart In a Hurry tells a tale of perseverance.
For the second year in a row, Long Island songwriter/multI instrumentalist/vocalist Joe Piket has won the prestigious Long Island Entertainer of the year award in the piano entertainer category. Piket has been described as “a more edgy Billy Joel” and “the Bruce Springsteen of Long Island” by music critics. Rave reviews for Joe’s CD’s have appeared in Newsday, Good Times, Island Ear, Aural Fix, and other print publications, as well as hundreds of on-line publications. Joe has worked with such diverse artists as Chuck Berry, Leon Russell, Jason Bonham, Dee Snider, Johnny Maestro, Renaissance, Alive and Kicking, Richie Cannata, Randy Jackson, and even TV personality/performer “Uncle” Floyd Vivino. Joe’s first prolonged success came as front man/ composer for Joe Piket and the Storm, but more recently as a solo artist, Piket has released the acclaimed CD’s “EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT” and “SONGWRITER, VOLUME 1”, as well as several music videos. Joe’s music and videos, as well as interviews, reviews and fan comments can be viewed by googling Joe Piket and on YouTube, Instagram, Spotify, and many other platforms.
GETTING FUNKY WITH LOGAN WHALEY A little more than a year after introducing the world to his debut album, “On the Cusp”, Logan finally locked in his live line-up and decided to get them on record along with special guests Tosh Peterson and Meredith Whaley. After some time spent tracking unrecorded favorites from old project GeoTribe, Logan told engineer and co-producer Daveer Mohan that he wanted to work on something fresh. So while Logan got his mind right for a session, Daveer put the 4-on-the-floor and got FUNKY with some synth bass. What happened next can only be explained as “studio magic” as “Funky Tonight” was born. The band learned the song and it made its live debut a few short weeks after it was written at STATTfest 2021. It’s quickly become a live-favorite and was a no-brainer as a title track, single and mantra for a new era of the band.

TECHNOBEAT
By Richard Joseph Branciforte
Elephante Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back for another edition of everyone’s favorite EDM column! Lots of shows happening in the NYC city area so let’s get to it. James Hype is doing two nights at Schimanski in Brooklyn on March 18th and 19th to bring it some good ol’ house music with some superior mixing. This guy is always uploading videos of himself doing some crazy fun transitions between tracks, showing off his mixing skill and creativity. He’s one I’ve been waiting to see for a while and I can only imagine the kind of show he puts on. Hard decisions must be made though, as Dombresky is also playing in Brooklyn that night at The Tent at Avant Gardner on March 18th. Dombresky is a house music icon and is known for his hard hitting sets with a unique sound and style that is all things energetic. But hey, sounds like one night is for Dombresky and the other for James Hype. Keeping it in the house music realm, Elephante is playing at Webster Hall on March 26th to deliver some progressive house vibes. You’ll be feeling uplifted and upbeat throughout the night with Elephante’s euphoric style of house that mixes in both original tracks and remixes of popular house music throughout the years. Elephante has been around for a while and I’m glad to see the progression his music has taken over all this time. And if you just can’t get enough of the house music, I’ve got two more top tier acts stopping by that you won’t want to miss. Malaa is doing a warehouse concert at a secret location on April 2nd and if that doesn’t make you excited, I’m not sure what will. The French DJ will often bring an extra bass heavy and dark feel to his shows, putting a little extra spice into the beat and giving his shows an engaging and outright wild energy. No wonder he’s usually towards the top of festival lineups and has a dedicated following. Last on the house train, we have good old Oliver Heldens. The Dutch producer and DJ has a signature sound that feels like European house music but with a little extra something mixed in there to give it an addictive nature. Heldens sound is instantly recognizable and lasts for years on end. I still remember the first time I heard “Koala” and how I was immediately hooked on the vibe his music and sets put off. He’ll be making his way to Marquee on April 7th for your listening pleasure. If you’re feeling like you want something a bit heavier, BTSM will be headlining a tour with Kai Wachi, Vampa, and Hairitage making a stop at Brooklyn Mirage on April 1st. This will be a night
you know about this one. I’m sure the feelings of grime and disgust this invoked in me will be feelings you also have once you get deep into it. So well put together and with such an incredible song selection, this mix is truly a nasty work of art. GRex has continually pushed the boundaries of what bass music should be and it brings me joy to see this new mix finally get released. Hope you enjoyed that as much as I did! As I leave you with that, just a reminder to email me any thoughts or questions at richiegtechno@gmail. com and remember to keep raging my friends! of headbanging, going crazy, and just losing yourself in the grimeyness that is dubstep. This lineup is absolutely packed and I would advise you grab tickets ASAP and make sure you check this show out. But if you just wanna get a little funky, The Disco Biscuits will be stopping by that same weekend on April 2nd at The Capitol Theatre to bring you the vibes and grooves that’ll have you dancing all night long. The Disco Biscuits are a jam band that bring all sorts of energy to the stage and keep you on your toes all night long. I’d say they’re like a modern day String Cheese Incident who blend many different genres together to form one epic sound that is hard to reproduce. I’d like to leave you with just one new 30-minute mix released by G-Rex called “The Summoning IV”. Oh boy. This one is heavy. Dubs and wubs and nonstop surprises is what defines this mix. I’d be remiss to not let

FREE LISTING FOR YOUR BAND KENNY ROGERS – THE LOVE OF GOD
Through the course of his iconic career, Kenny Rogers attracted fans worldwide with an incredible range of music from country to pop and beyond. However, in 2011 Kenny finally turned his attention to releasing his only gospel album, The Love Of God, which will be available in Deluxe Edition form for the first time ever on CD on March 25th via Capitol. For pre-order: https://KennyRogers. lnk.to/LoveOfGodDeluxe One of the tracks originally recorded for the album was “The Gospel Truth” featuring The Oak Ridge Boys. While the song, written by Rogers and his bandmates Steve Glassmeyer and Warren Hartman, didn’t make the final track listing of the original release – it makes its physical debut on The Love Of God (Deluxe Edition). Longtime friends and frequent tour partners, including on the groundbreaking “Full House Tour” in 1979 with Dottie West that sold out arenas, Kenny Rogers and The Oak Ridge Boys had surprisingly never recorded together in the studio until this track was created.

BEST OF CHARLEY PRIDE 50TH ANNIVERSARY Country music legend and trailblazer Charley Pride’s ‘The Best of Charley Pride Volume II’ is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Debuted in 1972 on Billboard magazine’s country albums chart, it spent 16 weeks at the No. 1 spot and was Pride’s best-selling album during his career. Included on the album are hits like “Kiss An Angel Good Mornin’”, “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone,” “I’d Rather Love You,” “I’m Just Me” and more fan favorites. In line with Black History Month, the celebration of this anniversary reminds us how Pride transcended racial barriers within the country music community and beyond.

WOMEN WHO ROCK NEW FREDA PAYNE SINGLE “Just To Be With You” Is the latest single release from Grammy & NAACP Image Awards nominated artist Freda Payne. A classic hit originally written by Smooth Jazz sensation Aneessa and Motown producer Michael B. Sutton was performed by Aneessa. Primarily an asset belonging to “The Sound of LA” music label, the song has been re-cut and rearranged by the genius producer to befit the mellow and sultry voice of Freda Payne. Featuring lyrics that stem from the deepest roots of Love, Freda Payne sings Smooth Jazz and R&B on this track taking her to new levels for a tour de force in her career. Freda said “When I first heard the song, I knew I wanted to sing this song because it spoke to my heart.” Released to all media streaming platforms, the single by Freda Payne is also currently available on her website https://www.fredapayne.com and on thesoundofla.com. ROBERTA FLACK BUSTIN’ LOOSE A rare album by music legend Roberta Flack, Bustin’ Loose is a treasure trove of the acclaimed superstar’s formidable talents as a producer, composer, arranger and collaborator. After being outof-print for decades, the soundtrack to the Richard Pryor movie was re-released digitally into the music marketplace by GeffenUMe on February 11, the day after Flack Roberta Flack celebrated her 85th birthday. With six of its nine songs co-written by Flack, the set – described as “electric modern soul” by the Department of Afro American Research, Arts, and Culture – features star guest vocalists Luther Vandross and Peabo Bryson alongside five numbers sung by Flack and two instrumentals she co-wrote. It presages the rise to superstardom soon after by Vandross, who had sung backing vocals with Flack on her 1972 million-selling debut duet album with Donny Hathaway. On Bustin’ Loose, Vandross shares vocals with Flack on the set’s opening track, “Just When I Needed You;” Roberta sings his composition “You Stopped Loving Me,” which reappeared less than two months later on his two-million-selling debut solo album.
needed at the time. But I feel lucky now that it brought me closer to the people who truly did, and still do. Sometimes it takes a moment to figure out who in your life is there for you and is the most uplifting to be around,” says the 27-year-old soulful pop singer/songwriter whose emotive vocals are kissed by blues, folk, and pop.
ALLISON MOORER “WISH FOR YOU TODAY” “These songs are about soul communication, love, and the universal language of music,” says Allison Moorer of her digital EP, Wish For You. “When I first realized John Henry was making up his own melodies and humming them on repeat, I learned them too so I could sing them with him. Any chance for communication with my son is one I can’t ignore. So he’ll sing a line, and then I’ll sing a line... it’s a conversation.” Wish For You is out through Moorer’s own Autotelic Records via Thirty Tigers. Moorer released I Dream He Talks to Me: A Memoir of Learning How to Listen, chronicling her life with her son in October 2021. You don’t need one to understand the other, but of course, experiencing both will only provide a fuller picture.

LILLY MEOLA SPREADS “SUNSHINE” If Lily Meola’s philosophy of life could be summed up in just one of her lyrics, it might just be this: “Stay close to the people who feel like sunshine” from her next single, the aptly titled “Sunshine,” released Feb.18. The heartfelt sentiment comes from a place of happiness and contentment after going through a difficult time with anxiety. “I wrote this song when I was putting up a real fight with my anxiety. Some of my friends didn’t have the patience or Lilly Meola understanding that I really
MACKENZIE GRANT “LITTLE GIRL” “I wrote this song as a message to my younger self,” says Nashvillebased singer, songwriter and musician MacKenzie Grant about “Little Girl,” the third single from her upcoming album WONDER WORLD due out March 18. Ahead of the track’s release MacKenzie premiered the intimate music video for “Little Girl.” It was filmed at her home and Ellington Agriculture Center in Nashville, by her 13-year-old son Bram who co-directed it with her. MacKenzie debuted the album’s first single “Putting Down Some Things” in January via Americana Highways which wrote: “Grant’s songwriting is informed by witnessing a wave of these elements of the human experience, and the gentle easiness of her vocals helps to soothe the soul.” This was followed by her sharing a cover of Joni Mitchell’s timeless single “Borderline” earlier this month.

RHYTHM TRACKING
With Jimi LaLumia
BOWIE David Bowie...he just can’t stop, even though he left us quite a while go; so it is that shops that still sell vinyl records proudly display “Toy”, a multi record box set of mini albums, boasting re-recorded versions of some of his earliest, pre super stardom songs. The sticker proudly proclaims “The new David Bowie album”, as if he just stepped out of the studio, and of course, I opened my wallet, and eagerly brought it up to the counter spending a good deal of money to be able to bring it home, and indulge one last time, as I’ve been doing since1972, when “Ziggy Stardust’ made it’s way into my hands. In addition to pre glam gems like “I Dig Everything” and “The London Boys”, we get to hear “Toy” and some other tracks from the album that Virgin Records had refused to release for whatever reason. The cult of Bowie remains as strong as ever it seems, keeping his legacy in the status of Sinatra, Presley and Beatles quite easily. While his battle with Virgin Records kept him from seeing the release of this tribute to his early songwriting days, this well packaged and annointed box set does him proud, and is worth every retrospective penny, an absolute must for his long time followers and the new breed who are just discovering him. ADELE Keeping the Brit/U.K. tradition alive and well, Adele is as big an attraction as any that came before her. Her latest album is a virtual hot bed of radio hits, as she finds herself reigning on the Top 40 stations months after her latest project was released. Her biggest problem thus far is the touring part, as her ‘pull out’ from gigs that were set up on the west coast has hurt her rep to a degree which may come to haunt her when it’s time for her to actually do some ‘live’ shows again; nonetheless, her fan base seems dedicated enough Photo courtesy: adele.com to turn up whenever she finally decides to do the same; the touring business in general is finally recovering from the ‘covid’ damage, good news for long suffering fans of live music.

METAL KORN RELEASES REQUIEM Korn released their highly anticipated studio album Requiem via Loma Vista Recordings. The 9-track album features the stand-out hit single “Start the Healing,” in addition to the previously released tracks “Forgotten,” which Rolling Stone described as “explosive” and “Lost In The Grandeur,” which dropped just a few days before Requiem’s release as a final taste of the record. Requiem is produced by Korn and Chris Collier. Energized by a new creative process free of time constraints, the band was able to do things with Requiem that the past two decades haven’t always afforded them, such as taking additional time to experiment together or diligently recording to analog tape - processes which unearthed newfound sonic dimension and texture in their music.

MINISTRY FEATURING JELLO BIAFRA One of the most incendiary and popular tracks on Ministry’s latest album Moral Hygiene is undoubtedly “Sabotage Is Sex,” the blistering collaboration between the one-and-only Al Jourgensen and his oft-collaborator Jello Biafra, of course the great mind behind the Dead Kennedys. The two famously kickstarted their sideproject Lard in the late ‘80s, a fusion of industrial and punk, and this latest collaboration may be a hint of things yet to come. While “Sabotage Is Sex” has been pleasing ears since Moral Hygiene was released via Nuclear Blast Records, fans now have even more to feast on with the powerhouse new video – featuring both music icons and marking the first time Biafra has ever appeared in a music video. Created by director Joel Smith of Mad Minute Productions (previous work includes Activision, Audi, Black Eyed Peas, U2, X Games), the gritty, blackand-white video makes a number of bold statements as only Jourgensen and Biafra can about the state of society in 2022, focusing on the corruption of the powers that be, racial injustice and the infringement on the rights of Americans.

DEE SNIDER REVEALS MUSIC VIDEO REELZ original documentary America’s Deadliest Rock Concert: The Guest List premiered February 20, presenting the deeply personal stories of lives forever altered by the tragic Station nightclub fire that left 100 people dead, more than 200 injured, and devastated the tight-knit community of West Warwick, Rhode Island. Dee Snider’s latest album, Leave A Scar, is an illuminating plentitude of angst etched in time – serving as a musical refuge and expressive output for Dee. But in turn, this auditory time capsule written to express the anger, unease and pain emerges as not only crushingly heavy, but relentlessly powerful. Each of the 12 tracks on Leave A Scar not only further bolster Dee’s position as one of the most celebrated frontmen of all time, showcasing that his vocal delivery and commanding swagger is as strong as ever, but that he is nowhere near stopping.
