HUNTINGTON’S CINEMA ARTS REOPENS After more than two years, Huntington’s Cinema Arts Centre has reopened with a newly renovated space, independent film screenings and special programming with great events planned for this spring and summer. The work on the Cinema Arts Centre includes brand new seats, carpeting, ceilings, an updated ventilation system, as well as new paint and carpeting in the lobby and new seats and tables in the café, which are set to arrive any day. The floors in the theaters have also been re-profiled to create better sight lines. The Cinema is now open for in-person programming, and tickets are on sale for a number of films and special events this year. One series that particularly excites the staff is the Maritime Film Festival. A celebration of Long Island’s coastal culture, the multi-day Maritime Film Festival, will explore topics such as Long Island’s bay houses, the first all-female crew of sailors to circumnavigate the globe, and the Bungalows of Rockaway. The festival will feature a number of special guests including filmmakers, subjects of the films, and experts on Long Island history. You can purchase tickets or find more information about these and other events on the Cinema Arts Centre website: www.cinemaartscentre.org “It has been a long road to get us to this point.” Said Nate Close, director of communications at the Cinema Arts Centre. But they’re back, better than ever!

THE JIMI HENDRIX OF THE UKULELE! While versatility for any musician is impressive, what’s remarkable about Jake Shimabukuro’s transcendent skills is how he explores his seemingly limitless vocabulary whether it’s jazz, rock, blues, bluegrass, folk or even classical on perhaps the unlikeliest of instruments: the ‘ukulele. Responding to the urgent calls of his fervent imagination, Jake has taken the ‘ukulele to points previously thought impossible, and in the process he’s reinvented the applications for this tiny, heretofore under appreciated four string instrument! Jake’s most recent album ‘Jake & Friends’ is his most creatively ambitious project to-date, featuring collaborations with a who’s who of music royalty from Willie Nelson and Bette Midler to Jimmy Buffett and Kenny Loggins. For more information on his upcoming show June 12th, 7pm, visit SuffolkTheater.com or call the Box Office at 631-727-4343

KENNY G AT WHBPAC Saxophonist and top-selling instrumentalist Kenny G rose to fame in the mid-1980’s with his signature smooth jazz sound, but he was just warming up! He has dominated the airwaves since, selling more than 12 million copies of his album Breathless in the United States alone and winning a Grammy two years later for the track “Forever in Love”. Not content with the music industry’s top honor, in 1997 he added a Guinness World Record to his resume for the longest note recorded on a saxophone (45 minutes and 47 seconds). But not to worry – his performance at WHBPAC promises to be more than just one note! He’ll be playing Westhampton Beach Saturday, June 4th at 8pm. For ticket info call 631-2881500 or go to whbpac.org

BROADWAY – AWARDS SEASON Fifteen shows have opened on Broadway in April alone as the 2021-2022 season speeds towards the cutoff dates for awards’ eligibility. Among the shows that have moved uptown, the Pulitzer Prizewinning off-Broadway hit “A Strange Loop,” has opened on Broadway to rapturous raves. Composer-lyricist-book writer Michael R. Jackson’s semiautobiographical musical withina-musical, within-a-musical, follows the struggle of Usher (the captivating Jaquel Spivey making his Broadway debut), a young self-described fat Black queer aspiring musical theater composer who works as an usher at “The Lion King” while trying to fulfill his ambition to write a musical about a fat, Black, queer artist trying to write a musical about a fat, Black, queer artist, etc. -- while also battling The Thoughts of selfloathing and parental criticism undermining his self-confidence. Directed by Stephen Brackett, the tuneful musical is raw and groundbreaking in its frank exploration of race, sex and self-image. (Lyceum Theatre)

Teeth,” a celebration of humankind’s ability to endure, has been re-imagined by director Lileana Blain-Cruz in Lincoln Center Theater’s ambitious but disappointing revival. Wilder’s archetypal all-American suburban family, the indestructible Antrobuses -- now reconceived as a Black family (the excellent Roslyn Ruff and James Vincent Meredith) -- survive the encroaching Ice Age, Noah’s Flood and a seven-year war. Contemporary playwright Brandon Jacob-Jenkins has updated references and dialogue to illuminate the Black experience. Also slated to move to Broadway before the pandemic, British-Irish playwright Martin McDonagh’s deliciously macabre pitch-black comedy of menace, revenge, and murder has finally opened on Broadway with several cast changes. Set in 1965 after England’s abolishment of capital punishment, the Olivier Award-winning “Hangmen” takes place in a Lancashire pub run by the second most famous hangman in England, a pompous bully (David Threfall). The cozy community of the pub’s habitual barflies is disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious, creepy outsider (“Games of Throne’s Alfie Allen) with a secret agenda. Another crowd-pleaser like “A Strange Loop” that has audiences jumping to their feet cheering, “Suffs” has justly earned its comparison to “Hamilton.” Like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Shaina Taub not only wrote the book, the lyrics and the music to “Suffs,” she also stars as the reallife suffragist Alice Paul. Chronicling the seven years leading up to the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920 giving women the right to vote, “Suffs’s” spectacular cast of 20 women and non-binary performers (including Phillipa Soo, Jenn Colella, Hannah Cruz, Nikki M. James) brings to vivid life the individual activists who helped pioneer modernday protest tactics -- marches and rallies, silent protest and hunger strikes -- to win Women’s Suffrage in a thrilling and timely musical. SPORTS BEAT One of the big questions going into the 2022 season was “Will Aaron Judge sign a long-term contract with the New York Yankees, or will he test free agency waters at season’s end?” Judge made it clear he did not want to negotiate a new pact during the season. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman made public the Yankees’ offer which would pay Judge $30.5 million per year for seven years. Judge however turned it down. As you can guess, his decision did not endear himself to Bronx Bombers fans. Aaron Judge is betting on himself to have a big year. Michael Conforto made a similar bet on himself last year when he rejected the Mets’ reported five-year contract which would have paid him $20 million per year. Conforto had a putrid 2021 season and is currently unemployed. While all of us would jump at the kind of compensation Judge was offered, I can see his viewpoint. He is the face of the Yankees. As talented as Anthony Rizzo and DJ LeMahieu are, few buy Yankees tickets to see them play. They do buy tickets to see #99 bash home runs. Yankees patrons also buy plenty of Judge-themed merchandise. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert met with the media before the start of the WNBA Draft which was held in Tribeca last Monday. She admitted her frustrations with the Russian government imprisoning one of the WNBA’s biggest stars, Britney Griner, on drug charges. Griner’s detention has not given Engelbert pause about her league’s best players going overseas to play during the winter where they are paid a lot more

than they are here. “It’s the best way to grow our game,” she said. ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro was one of the honorees at the 30th annual Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame ceremonies held at Manhattan’s Ziegfeld Ballroom. ESPN shook up the sportscasting world during the winter by signing the longtime top FOX Sports NFL broadcasting of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman. “That kind of talent is rarely on the market. That is why we went all in on them,” Pitaro told me. When I asked him if signing Buck and Aikman was a way of getting better games for “Monday Night Football” (NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” currently gets the lion’s share of the marquee matchups), Pitaro was diplomatic to the NFL authorities. “We’ve been happy with the games we’ve gotten.” He added however that under the new broadcast rights contract with the NFL, three games will be broadcast on ABC. It’s a safe bet the Jets and Giants won’t be playing in any of them. Baseball Digest is celebrating its 80th anniversary. Last week the venerable publication announced that legendary Dodgers announcer Vin Scully would be the recipient of its 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award. Scully turned 94 this past November. He still has the great Jimmy Pitaro vocal pipes and quick wit.

By Lloyd Carroll It was very classy of the Mets to name their press box after Jay Horwitz, their longtime PR maven who is now their VP of alumni affairs. Jay has been with the Mets for the past 42 years, I normally shy away from using the term “living legend,” but in Jay’s case it is fully justified. Baseball Digest is celebrating its 80th anniversary. The venerable publication announced last month that legendary Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully is the recipient of its Lifetime Achievement Awards. Justbaseball.com is hoping to aspire to be the 21st century online version of Baseball Digest. Former Miami Marlins Jared Greenberg third baseman Jeff Conine is an advisor to the website. The current issue features an interesting article on Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes. It is free to access. The MLB Network has a new weekday 5 PM show called “Pregame Spread” hosted by veteran sportscaster Matt Vasgersian. The show has interviews with newsmakers, opinions from the host, and the latest betting odds. With a title like “Pregame Spread,” Vasgersian should look at the cuisine ballplayers devour before a game. The Mets pre- and postgame shows on SNY, anchored by solid pro Gary Apple, are always compelling viewing because Apple, and his chief sidekick, Todd Zeile, are refreshingly candid. SNY has added former Mets reliever Jerry Blevins to the crew. Blevins has always had an offbeat personality and he is as colorful, yet informative, as I remember him being in the Mets clubhouse when he was a

Magic Johnson player. He is also not afraid to wear brash clothing in a world where sports commentators wear suits which would be appropriate for investment bankers. TNT NBA sideline reporter (and Hofstra alum) Jared Greenberg did an exemplary job last month commenting on the “N” train shooting tragedy in Brooklyn. Greenberg was reporting on the court of Barclays Center just before the start of the Brooklyn Nets “play-in game” with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Greenberg spoke about how the shooting at the 36th Street station was located just blocks away from the Nets practice facility and how many of the team’s employees use that station every day. He was able to perfectly balance news of the real world with an NBA game with playoff implications to a national audience. That is not an easy balancing act. Apple TV Plus is currently showing its four-part documentary on the life of Magic Johnson called “They Call Me Magic.” Johnson looks at the difficulties of his life including his failed 1998 late night talk show, “The Magic Hour.”

Pugs’, frolicking through stories about the invention of the Lazy Susan, slack lines and life lessons, sex parties, drug wish lists and lots more. Alex Hooper was sculpted in Baltimore, MD. As a troubled weirdo, he tried on many hats before realizing only comedy could tame his hair. Alex is best known as the America’s Got Talent comedian who infamously roasted the judging panel and the only contestant ever to get a “yes” from Simon Cowell and a “no” from the rest of the judges. His audition went viral and Alex was invited back again, this time making it all the way to the live shows. In total, his performances have over 100 million views.

JACKSON DEAN: HOT NEW ARTIST Bestowing a “hottest” title to a new artist risks coming off as so much hyperbole, but in the case of Big Machine recording artist Jackson Dean, it’s actually true. The March release of his debut album Greenbroke, the ascension of his debut single “Don’t Come Lookin’” and critical acclaim from all corners prove he is winning both charts and hearts. “Don’t Come Lookin’” debuted at No. 39 on the April 4 Country Aircheck/Mediabase chart – the highest chart entry for an artist’s first single since 2015. The song has already amassed more than 3 million on-demand streams and has broken into the Billboard Country Airplay chart’s top 30. Featured in the hit western series Yellowstone, the song drew radio’s attention during his commanding performance at Country Radio Seminar in late February. Produced by hit-making songwriter, artist and producer Luke Dick (Miranda Lambert, Dierks Bentley, Eric Church, among others), Greenbroke and its lead single herald a rare combination of commercial acceptance and creative depth. And that unique appeal will be on display all summer, as Dean is already approaching 40 dates on the books. LACY J. DALTON 40TH ANNIVERSARY Country hit-maker Lacy J. Dalton continues to celebrate the 40th anniversary of her million air-play song, “Everybody Makes Mistakes,” with a new acoustic version of the 1981 hit single. From her album Takin’ It Easy, the song reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. The emotional tune was co-written by Dalton and Mark Sherrill and has remained a fan favorite over the years. Taking an inward focus, Dalton channeled the heartfelt sentiments that we all face throughout life when it comes to all decisions, good or bad. Ultimately we have to learn from all mistakes to grow and by doing so, become a better person. The acoustic version of “Everybody Makes Mistakes” was premiered by Country Rebel. Last year marked the 40th anniversary of Dalton’s album and title track “Takin’ It Easy” which reached number 2 on Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks Chart and received a Million Airplay award from BMI. The easygoing tune came to life by Dalton and Mark while on a boat in the middle of Old Hickory Lake near Nashville, before being taken to Billy Sherrill for editing and production. Once released, “Takin’ It Easy” became Dalton’s highest-charting single and one of her most well-known songs to date. Dalton has a multitude of tour dates. DAVID FRIZZELL HALL INDUCTION This coming August, CMA and ACM award-winning and Grammy-nominated hitmaker, David Frizzell will have the prestigious honor of being inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. “The Texas Country Music Hall of Fame has been honoring country music legends for 25 years and we can’t think of a better person on our 25th Anniversary than David Frizzell who continues to keep traditional country music alive,” said Tommie Ritter Smith, President. Frizzell recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of his chart-topping tune, “You’re The Reason God Made Oklahoma.” As part of the anniversary, Country Rebel lifestyle outlet premiered four special performance videos by Frizzell including the hit song, as well as “That’s The Way Love Goes,” “If You’ve Got The Money, I’ve Got The Time,” “Lefty, Merle, and Me,” and “I’m Gonna Hire a Wino To Decorate Our Home.”

WHEELS & DEALS

LAYA DROPS EXPANSIVE UM, HELLO Staten Island songstress LAYA released the heady Um, Hello, her debut EP on Warner Records. The 11-track set shows off the R&B singer, songwriter, and creator’s versatility as she balances airy melodies with hefty beats, explores nostalgic sounds through a modern lens, and packs it all with plenty of sass and seduction to keep us firmly rooted in the present. The EP arrives alongside a virtual-reality-themed video for sultry bedroom groove “On Sight. The reissue of Um, Hello is LAYA’s first project since signing to Warner Records. LAYA was discovered after independently releasing her own music, which she co-produces and writes herself—on top of directing and editing her own visuals. Her December 2020 single, “Sailor Moon,” another Um, Hello highlight, went viral on social media, and it has since earned LAYA hundreds of thousands of views and countless new fans.

QUIRKY INDIE ROCK PROJECT, MEMO New York-based MeMo was once just a girl and her piano, but through the grace of the amazing musicians around her a new creative baby was born. MeMo and Friends is now a band of 5-9 roving, feral misfits influenced by anything from Motown to an Irish pub, and together they are proud to announce their latest single “Worth,” which MeMo explains, “From feeling ‘Untouchable’ to now knowing one’s value, ‘Worth’ exemplifies perhaps the entire journey of the album ‘Business of Healing’ and the 15 years of growth it represents. No longer willing to stay small, ‘Worth’ shouts, ‘Claim who you are and accept nothing less than your full worth from everyone (especially the romantic prospects) in your life!” Taken from her album Business of Healing, released April 29th, MeMo’s sound is what she describes as “Fiona Apple on a light cocktail of amphetamines and prozac.”

POP PUNKERS BABY GOT BACK TALK New school pop punkers Baby Got Back Talk announced their signing to Wiretap Records along with plans to release a new EP, ‘Existential Shred’, this summer. Vocalist/bassist G’Ra Asim says, “As the D-Iwhy?-because-we-gotta punk party known as Baby Got Back Talk goes, the medium is the message. The four of us think of our project as a Mom and Pop Punk band. Which makes linking up with Wiretap Records a whole vibe, since (Wiretap Records owner) Rob (Castellon’s) hustle and social consciousness are a perfect match for our own. Our forthcoming EP, ‘Existential Shred,’ is a bold new chapter in the band’s story and we’re stoked to release it on such a rad and forward-thinking label. Shout to queer punx and punx of color worldwide— this is for you. Only herbs will miss it.” To coincide with the signing news, the paperback edition of G’Ra’s first book, Boyz n the Void: a mixtape to my brother, was released on May 10 through Beacon Press. With each chapter anchored by a song on a mixtape, the nonfiction book explores race, gender, class and sexuality as they pertain to punk rock and straight-edge culture. The hardcover version of Boyz n the Void was released last spring, and the book has earned strong reviews.

TECHNOBEAT

Griz at Electric Forest Here we are folks! Back again for another exciting installation of TechnoBeat as we roll into the summer season packed with music, shows, and festivals. As we’ve come out of way too long either being quarantined or having most of the live music we love cancelled, this will be the first summer since 2019 that we will have a full festival season on our hands. I know I’ve been looking forward to this from the moment festivals started to get cancelled in 2020 and am grateful that we can finally experience all of these options available to us around the country. To start off, I wanted to bring attention to some upcoming festivals and special events that I think will be top tier for this summer season. Electric Forest will return to Rothbury, Michigan after a 3 year hiatus and delivers a unique and immersive electronic festival set in the forest. 8 stages come together to form a world where nature is your home, everyone is your friend, and secrets await you in the forest. When you’re there, you feel at peace, surrounded by beautiful scenery and wonderful people and moments. This has become one of my favorites for the incredibly high production value and stellar lineup that Insomniac events brings to the table. Headliners this year include Griz, Sylvan Esso, Louis the Child, Big Gigantic, Porter Robinson, Slander, Fisher, Disclosure, and the Disco Biscuits. If that wasn’t enough, there’s another 100 or so acts over the 4 days at the end of June so that you could listen to 12 hours of music every day if you wanted to. Check this out because it truly is a once in a lifetime experience and stands apart from many of the other events I’ve been to. In a similar fashion, Summer Camp Music Festival will take place outside of Chicago on Memorial weekend. The whole vibe of this fest is… you guessed it… Summer Camp themed! From camp counselors to tug of war and everything else you loved (and maybe hated) from your days at summer camp as a kid, this festival takes us all back to a simpler time. With top acts such as Umphrey’s McGee, Zeds Dead, STS9, NGHTMRE, Liquid Stranger, Big Wild,

and Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, this event has an eclectic mix of acts and is similarly situated in a tranquil and loveable natural landscape. Closer to home, we have Moonrise Festival in Baltimore, Maryland happening the weekend of August 6 – 7. Although not based in a nature setting, Moonrise is a great relatively local fest that always packs a punch with their lineup. This year is no different. From house to dubstep and bass, the artists making a stop here are not to be missed. The acts include AC Slater, ATLiens, Boogie T, Dirt Monkey, Excision, Don Diablo, Jantsen, Subdocta, Lucii, Mersive, Rezz, Peekaboo, Tchami, Tiesto, Zedd, and Wax Motif. Even if those were the only artists, that would be more than enough reasons to buy your ticket right now. For only 2 days, this show will be packed with talent and Baltimore is only a short drive away.

There’s an incredible new album out by Tripp St. that I’ve been jamming constantly called “Welcome to Tripp St.” which you’re just going to have to see for yourself to experience what I did. Such powerful presence, masterful sound design, and thoughtful composition are cornerstones of this album. From the

By Richard Joseph Branciforte

Electric Forest melodic and trippy intro song “This is Me” to mind racing track “Shifter”, there’s a little bit of everything brought to the table in this album. Whether you’re trying to sit and relax or you want to get a little wild, you won’t have much time during this album where you aren’t deeply engaged by the what you’re hearing and often left wondering “How did he come up with and create these sounds?” My recommendation is find a nice sunset, get a little squad, and just vibe out to this whole album. When listened to all the way, the vibe it creates is what albums are meant to be. Before I leave you, I’d like to let you know about two singles you should check out after your Tripp St. journey. “Take A Trip” by Liquid Stranger and LSDream and “Dope Slanga” by TVBOO and Subdocta. Both songs do a great job at showcasing the styles and energy of both artists on the track and blend their musical talents well so that you really have a treat to feast your ears on. And yes, they both have a good amount of wubs in them because, well, what else would you want? That’s all the time for me today! Hope you’re able to check out some of these fests and music to help hold you over until the June issue of Good Times. Feel free to reach out to me at richiegtechno@gmail.com with any comments or questions! Until next time, keep raging my friends!

CLASSIC ROCK BRIAN MAY GOES BACK TO ANOTHER WORLD Brian May shares a newly-created performance video for the title track of his 1998 solo album Another World – filmed recently in the Canary Island locations where he says he feels “closest to Heaven.” The video premiered on YouTube April 29th. The atmospheric song is a highlight of the album, which is out now in a deluxe, multi-format edition in May’s Gold Series of reissues. The 2CD and box set formats feature the remastered original album and the Another Disc collection of remixes, rarities and live tracks. Originally written by Brian for the film Sliding Doors, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, contractual issues prevented the song being used. “The story about what could have happened if one little thing had changed in history, that the relationship either happens or not, really touched my heart, and I found it easy to write this song because I was writing from my own feelings of my own relationships.” BEST OF FOREIGNER 4 LIVE “Waiting For A Girl Like You,” “Urgent,” “Break It Up”, “Juke Box Hero.” FOREIGNER’s timeless anthems continue to rock the charts, with ten multi-platinum albums, sixteen Top 30 hits and album sales now exceeding 80 million copies. Now, as part of the 40th anniversary celebration of the groundbreaking album, FOREIGNER ‘4,’ the band releases The Best of FOREIGNER 4 Live: The Last Vegas Edition, a very special digitally recorded and mastered live performance of these principal tracks on a stunning red vinyl edition available at Walmart. The Best of Foreigner 4 Live: The Las Vegas Edition includes several unique performances such as ‘Waiting For A Girl Like You’ with a 56-piece orchestra and chorus. Other highlights include the opening songs, ‘Night Life’ and ‘Woman In Black,’ which together illustrate the weight and musicality of this incredible band. One of the most important tracks is a stunning performance of ‘Juke Box Hero’ featuring Led Zeppelin’s heir apparent, Jason Bonham on drums. The solo section gives a nod to their epic hit, ‘Whole Lotta Love.’ FOREIGNER’s lineup includes founder and Songwriters Hall of Fame member Mick Jones, whose stylistic songwriting, indelible guitar hooks and multi-layered talents continue to escalate FOREIGNER‘s influence and guide the band to new horizons; lead singer Kelly Hansen, one of rock’s greatest showmen who has led FOREIGNER into the digital age while inspiring a whole new generation of fans; noted bassist Jeff Pilson; Michael Bluestein on keyboards; guitarist Bruce Watson; Chris Frazier on drums and guitarist Luis Maldonado. ROLLING STONES LICKED LIVE IN NYC In 1964, The Rolling Stones arrived to absolute mayhem for their first show in NYC, after the release of their debut album The Rolling Stones. Having played New York City multiple times, at several venues, it was only fitting that in January 2003, as part of their 40th anniversary tour, they made it a point to return to New York’s most celebrated arena… Madison Square Garden. The Rolling Stones’ 40-year celebration tour with the NYC crowd bearing witness to a razor-sharp performance is evidenced throughout this entire set. WOMEN WHO ROCK Artistically, she is collaborating with Southern California’s most creative accompanists: ace pianists Tom Ranier, Jeff Colella, and Christian Jacob designed beguiling, harmonically rich settings for her incisive lyrics. The stellar rhythm section tandem of drummer Ray Brinker and bassist Trey Henry appear on almost every track. Also featuring cellists John Waltz, lead cellist for The Los Angeles Opera Company, Stephanie Fife and Mike Kaufman.

ELLEN FOLEY MAY 26 CONCERT Tickets are on sale now for Ellen Foley’s May 26 performance at The Cutting Room in Manhattan. Foley is a multi-talented performer best known for singing on Meat Loaf’s classic Bat Out of Hell album. “Ellen Foley is a remarkable singer of multitudes: the only one in history to star in a Sondheim musical and also sing with the Clash and Meat Loaf.” For her debut performance at The Cutting Room, Foley will also include songs she made famous with Meat Loaf, as well as selections from Spirit of St. Louis, the 1981 solo album she recorded with the Clash. Doors will open for the May 26 concert at 6:00 PM. Ellen Foley and the Worried Men take the stage at 7:00 PM.

AMERICANA’S ANGIE GOEKE Houston, TX-based Americana singersongwriter Angie Goeke released her debut full-length LP, If I Were Honest, on April 29th. An independent release, the album was recorded in Nashville and produced by Mary Bragg. If I Were Honest presents an atmospheric Americana collection that melds the many facets of Goeke’s creative tunning, and personal life into one cohesive, elegant whole. Inspired by independent, individual artists like Ella Fitzgerald and Willie Nelson, Goeke quickly earned a reputation for her particular brand of haunting, narrative, emotionally complex songs. Her unique compositions, which she often begins writing on ukulele before expanding for a larger band, fuse elements of classic Americana, folk, bluegrass, and jazz, with her captivating vocal melodies front and center.

Eloah Jones by Libby Danforth

ELOAH JONES DRUNK WORDS Eloah Jones’ music conjures a hypnotic singer-songwriter vibe, instantly relatable confessions that call to mind the plummy depth of influences like Lana Del Rey and Banks. These sounds inspire so many descriptions. Edgy pop. Alternative. Jazz. But beneath those labels are the emotions that give them life: vulnerability, a yearning for connection, a longing for home, a need for love a hug.” Jones channeled that love of one’s chosen home into an ethereal, jazz-inflected cover of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Under The Bridge,” an intimate love song originally dedicated to a different city. That cover appears on her EP, which features several original creations and was produced by Aaron Bonus (Sasha Sloan, Lost Boy Crow, Boehm, and Peking Duk). “Working with Aaron is always a pleasure,” says Jones. For more info: www.eloahjones.com

SONGWRITER SYLVIA BROOKS Since her captivating debut in 2009, jazz vocalist Sylvia Brooks has displayed a gift for inhabiting different personas, with a subspecialty in film- noir inspired femmes fatale. On this - Signature (Rhombus Records) - her fourth album, she embraces the most challenging role of all, defining herself with a set of beautifully crafted original songs. Her evocative lyrics and emotionally direct delivery imbue the music with hard-won authenticity. Whether looking back with wry affection on her walk-on-the-wild-side youth or lamenting a lost love, Brooks brings bracing honesty and poise to the material.

Eloise Alterman SINGER-SONGWRITER ELOISE ALTERMAN Singer-songwriter Eloise Alterman makes her official ATCO/Big Yellow Dog/Atlantic Records debut with release of her new EP, Sad Bird, available now at all DSPs and streaming services. Alterman creates music of exquisite sensitivity, finespun songs that capture the subtlest nuances of heartache and loss. A self-taught pianist/ guitarist who began penning soul-baring songs in her early teens while growing up in Detroit. Produced by 8x GRAMMY Award-winning Producer Dave Cobb (Brandi Carlile, Chris Stapleton), Sad Bird is highlighted by the lushly textured, vulnerable first single, “Her.” “Working with Dave Cobb was such a special experience,” says Alterman. “He is so talented and really knows how to highlight the artist’s voice and bring their story to life in musical form.” ANNA CLENDENING RETURNS Rising singer-songwriter Anna Clendening makes her long awaited return with new single “Sweatshirt” – available now via Atlantic Records. The track, co-penned by Dan Richards (One Direction, Anson Seabra) and produced by Colin Brittain (5 Seconds of Summer, All Time Low), marks the introduction of a new chapter for Clendening following an 18-month hiatus that found her relocated from Los Angeles to Nashville and embracing herself as both an artist and songwriter. Warm guitar, a glitchy beat, and upbeat production offset her story of a doomed relationship with “a narcissistic asshole” who quite literally stole her Anna Clendening sweatshirt.

RHYTHM TRACKING

With Jimi LaLumia

METAL IRON MAIDEN; LEGACY OF THE BEAST Ahead of the two bands sharing the stage for two shows in Germany this July, POWERWOLF will be the second in-game collaboration of 2022 for Iron Maiden’s Legacy of the Beast free-to-play mobile game. Following successful collaborations last year with Amon Amarth, Lacuna Coil, Ghost and most recently with Disturbed, Iron Maiden’s Legacy of the Beast team created a new character and storyline borrowing from POWERWOLF’s latest album, Call of the Wild. The new limited-time, in-game event called, Macht Der Wölfe (German for Power of the Wolf) features a limited-time character, Vârcolac. In this new storyline, Vârcolac and Van Helsing Eddie cross paths in the catacombs of Dracula’s Dungeon. Vârcolac has just escaped Professor Parabiosis, an evil doctor wanting to conduct experiments on him because of his extraordinary powers. He asks Van Helsing Eddie to join him in defeating the evil doctor. Van Helsing Eddie soon realizes that Vârcolac is fighting his own internal struggle between good and evil and they soon realize the professor has a more sinister plan in mind than just a mere dissection. In Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast, metal and RPG gaming fans take on the role of the band’s iconic mascot, Eddie, who travels across a spectacularly diverse array of worlds by traveling through time in captivating 3D environments. Eddie appears in many forms, each a part of Iron Maiden’s rich history, and each with a set of special powers and abilities. For more information please visit - http://www.ironmaidenlegacy.com

TAYLOR HAWKINS It seems that this year, as much if not more than any previous, is the year of RIP/death notices for pop culture figures, and especially music touring/ recording artists. Sadly, Taylor Hawkins, drummer for The Foo Fighters, is the latest name to add to the deceased list. Touring with a rock band can always lead to dangerous reactions from the unending wear and tear; the road is an unfriendly master, and drugs, more often than not, seems to be the assumed antidote; in many ways, “Kurt Cobain’ syndrome seems to get glamorized; sadly, I’m sure this will not be the last of this type of report. CLIVE DAVIS Unlike recording artists, the label execs who sign them seem to have a healthy life span. The legendary head of CBS/Columbia Records, Clive Davis, has just recently celebrated his 90th birthday; Clive’s career is the stuff of legend; attending the Woodstock Festival, watching a new attraction named Janis Joplin, and then signing her and launching her into eternal Rock & Roll Hall of Fame status. Davis spent a great deal of time in the 1970’s at my favorite old hangout, Max’s Kansas City, a club located off the corner of Park Avenue South and 17th Street in Manhattan. It was at Max’s that Clive saw this kid from New Jersey named Bruce Springsteen and signed him to Columbia Records; he also saw Aerosmith at Max’s and signed then well; Davis attended an ‘audition showcase’ at Max’s for a new band called Cheap Trick and, yes, he signed them there; they don’t make clubs like Max’s anymore, and there does not seem to be a new Clive Davis making the rounds either, sad to report.; Happy Birthday, Clive! POP CULTURE Sometime recording artist Jennifer Lopez is reported to be headed towards the studio to create some new tracks; it’s been quite a while since we’ve heard anything from her besides the news about her off again/on again relationship with Ben Affleck; J Lo, along with rivals Mariah Carey and Madonna, all seem to have stepped away from attempts to climb onto the pop charts; it can be quite a tough business, this music business, but the show must go on, and always will.
