SUMMERTIME THEATER NEWS On July 1 the Broadway League, despite objections by some theatergoers and actors, dropped the mask mandate for Broadway. New on Broadway: There’s a digital lottery at wwwLuckySeat.com to win a $50 ticket for the Broadway transfer of the acclaimed Encores! production of the Sondheim-Lapine musical “Into the Woods” (St. James Theater). Matthew Spangler’s stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini’s 2003 bestseller “The Kite Runner” is also premiering on Broadway. The play with music, which has played in London’s West End, concerns the friendship between two children in Afghanistan and the attempts years later by one of the men to confront his past and find redemption. (Hayes Theatre). While some of the Tony award-winning hits – “Six,” “A Strange Loop,” “Company” “MJ,” “Paradise Square” -- have experienced a postTony box-office surge, you can still get tickets to most of the big winners, and at TodayTix. com, Theatermania.com and the TKTS Booth you can even get discounted tickets. It’s the last chance to see popular shows that are closing: the Tony-winner “Company” closes July 31 and “POTUS,” “Come From Away,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” and “Tina” are closing this fall. New off-Broadway offerings include the musical “Between the Lines” (book by Timothy Allen McDonald; music and lyrics by Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson) about
by Jane Klain
Delilah, an outsider in a new town and new school, who finds that the lines between the fantasy of books and the real world begin to blur. (Tony Kiser Theatre). Lincoln Center Theater presents writer-director Aya Ogawa’s autobiographical “The Nosebleed” about the cultural and generational gaps in the complex relationship with their long-dead father. (Claire Tow Theater). Based on Patrick McCabe’s disturbing novel, lyricist-composer-librettist Asher Muldoon’s new musical “The Butcher Boy,” concerns a young boy in a small Irish town in the early 1960s whose obsession with pigs turns into violent urges. (Irish Repertory Theatre).
BOOKS HISTORY OF THE NETS: FROM TEANECK TO BROOKLYN The Nets have led a wandering existence spanning over five decades. The team has been known as the New Jersey Americans, New York Nets, New Jersey Nets and now Brooklyn Nets, while constantly relocating throughout the New York metropolitan area. Though often plagued by instability and futility, the franchise has celebrated iconic moments in the course of ABA and NBA history. Julius Erving’s legendary play led the team to a pair of ABA titles in 1974 and 1976. The meteoric rise of European superstar Dražen Petrovi followed by his tragic death in 1993 is etched into basketball fans’ hearts worldwide. Jason Kidd’s uncommon will steered New Jersey to back-to-back NBA Finals appearances in 2002 and 2003. An enlightening phone call from NBA commissioner David Stern in 1997 paved the way for the team’s move to Brooklyn in 2012. Author Rick Laughland charts the brutal lows and the exuberant highs throughout the history of the Nets. “BUGGIN OUT” AUTHOR AT DOLPHIN BOOKSTORE Buggin’ Out is a collection of outrageous autobiographical essays and observations that is sure to delight fans of humor everywhere. A.J’s stories range in subject from the unusual way he met his wife, a battle with blood-sucking bed bugs, his near kidnapping from a cult, and his first…and last, Grateful Dead concert. All told in a funny, sarcastic style sure to send readers running to the nearest pharmacist or bartender. 6 • Good Times Magazine - July 12 - August 9, 2022

The Dolphin Bookshop, 309 Main Street Port Washington 516-767-2750 has plenty of FREE parking in the back after 6 p.m. So come on down...or up on July 14th at 6:30 p.m. WILLIE NELSON NEW BOOK; ME AND PAUL Willie Nelson’s revelatory new book, Me and Paul: Untold Tales of a Fabled Friendship, invites the reader to meet Paul English, Willie’s longtime drummer, “closest friend” and combination bodyguard / guardian angel who shared and often shepherded the behind-thescenes real-world comedy, drama, tragedy and transcendence that come with the territory of a career like Willie’s. Willie first immortalized Paul English with the hilariously-detailed road song “Me & Paul.” Penned for the drummer in the early 1970s, the song became the title track for Willie’s 1985 studio album and a fan favorite in his live sets. Me and Paul: Untold Tales of a Fabled Friendship tracks the rise of Willie Nelson’s career from the obscurity of Fort Worth in the 1950s through the seedy clublands of Dallas in 1963 to the challenges of Nashville, the allure of New York and Hollywood (Paul appears in Willie’s 1986 movie, “Red Headed Stranger”), launching the Outlaw Country revolution, founding Farm Aid (Paul served as Farm Aid’s treasurer for many years) and much more. Paul and Willie first played together in Fort Worth in 1955; Paul became Willie’s regular drummer in 1966 and an essential member of the Family. Four of the performances on 2021’s The Willie Nelson Family--”Heaven and Hell,” “Kneel at the Feet of Jesus,” “Laying My Burdens Down” and “Family Bible”–are among the last recordings Willie made with his longtime drummer and best pal.

BOURBON AND BEYOND Danny Wimmer Presents announced that the much-anticipated return of the one-of-a-kind Bourbon & Beyond destination festival, is heading back to its home at Louisville’s Highland Festival Grounds at Kentucky Exposition Center September 15-18, 2022. Five years ago, DWP – already running strong with Louder Than Life – imagined an idea to further explore Louisville as a unique American destination city, one at the crossroads of great music and incredible food in the heart of Bourbon country. The idea for Bourbon & Beyond was born, bringing in an eclectic lineup of music all-stars (including acts such as Stevie Nicks, Robert Plant And The Sensational Space Shifters, Zac Brown Band, Daryl Hall & John Oates, John Fogerty, ZZ Top and Lenny Kravitz among others), alongside top-notch culinary demonstrations and the finest bourbon selections, as well as appearances from master distillers. In short order the event established itself as the World’s Largest Bourbon & Music Festival, in 2019 bringing in a record attendance of 91,000 people. Bourbon & Beyond’s incredible headlining talent begins with Jack White and Alanis Morissette Thursday, September 15; followed by Kings of Leon and Brandi Carlile on Friday, September 16; Pearl Jam and Greta Van Fleet on Saturday, September 17; and a very special closing night Sunday, September 18 including Kentucky native Chris Stapleton as well as The Doobie Brothers 50th anniversary celebration featuring Michael McDonald, Pat Simmons, Tom Johnston and John McFee. Many of the headliners are returning to Louisville for the first time in a number of years – Bourbon & Beyond will be Pearl Jam’s first Louisville show since 1994 and only the fourth time they’ve played in Kentucky, while Jack White’s last local appearance was in 2014 and Kings Of Leon haven’t been to town since 2017. SPORTS BEAT One of the Mets’ offseason moves which went under the radar screen was the signing of veteran outfielder Travis Jankowski who was a 2012 first-round draft choice of the San Diego Padres. While he never was an All-Star, Jankowski developed a reputation for being Travis Jankowski a good defensive outfielder, providing speed on the basepaths, and for being a contact hitter who was difficult to strike out. Long Island college baseball fans were familiar with Jankowski as he played at Stony Brook. I asked him how he chose Stony Brook since he grew up in Lancaster, PA. “They were the only college which offered me a scholarship!” he said forthrightly. The Mets had a rare clunker of a game last month in losing to the Milwaukee Brewers, 10-2. Mets radio voice Howie Rose told listeners he had received a text from Steve Albert who was at the game. Steve, the youngest brother of Marv Albert, replaced Lindsey Nelson in the Mets’ television booth in 1979. He remained with the Mets through 1981. To say the Mets Howie Rose were god-awful during those years
8 • Good Times Magazine - July 12 - August 9, 2022
would be a gross understatement. “I feel right at home tonight!” Albert told Rose. To borrow a feature from TV Guide, cheers to the Mets for holding their sixth annual Pride Night last month in which the team saluted the LGBTQ community. Outfielder Mark Canha and pitcher Taijuan Walker took to Twitter to show their support for Pride Night. On the other hand, jeers to the Mets media relations department for waiting to send out a Pride Night press release 24 hours before the event when it could have been done a lot earlier. Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena and Yankees starter Nestor Cortes created a stir last month by having a civil discussion at the Yankees dugout. While umpires were engaging in a sixteen-minute discussion amongst themselves to see whether Yankees manager Aaron Boone was allowed to make a pitching change in the eighth inning of the game, Arozarena sought out his fellow Cuban native, Cortes, to engage in some schmoozing during the downtime. Some of the talking heads on WFAN, ESPN New York, and SNY, were aghast at this fraternizing. Frankly, I saw nothing wrong. Players from opposing teams routinely exchange pleasantries during batting practice. The Arozarena-Cortes conversation served as a perspective reminder to knucklehead fans of a team who get abusive with those cheering for the rival team. The timing of this show of civility came a week after 29-year-old Rangers fan James Anastasio from Staten Island was arrested for throwing a sucker punch at a Tampa Bay Lightning fan as they were both leaving Madison Square Garden following the Rangers’ tough loss in pivotal Game 5 of the NHL Nestor Cortes Eastern Conference Finals.
By Lloyd Carroll Philadelphia Flyers communications director Zack Hill retired after 29 years with the team. Unlike many sports team media relations executives, Zack never promulgated a media caste system. He didn’t interfere when those from smaller media outlets were talking to the team’s stars. Too many of his sports team PR brethren try to restrict media access to marquee players to only those they deem important. He welcomed outlets big and small because understood all media coverage helped generate revenue. I am amazed at how many sports team communications directors and their staffs fail to realize this basic business fundamental. Adam Sandler is terrific playing a fictional Philadelphia 76ers scout, NHL All Star Stanley Sugerman, who is tasked with finding the Sixers a star player no one else knows about in the Netflix film, “Hustle.” He finds that hoops star, Bo Cruz (Utah Jazz forward Juancho Hernangomez) in a playground in Spain) but that only creates an avalanche of headaches for him. TNT NBA personality Kenny Smith shows his acting chops playing Sandler’s old Temple University teammate, Leon Rich. There are a ton of cameos from current NBA players and a memorable one from Long Island legend, Julius “Dr. J” Erving. The 2022 Tribeca Film Festival featured a lot of sports documentaries. Among them were “Unfinished Business” about the WNBA; the first episode of “The Captain,” ESPN’s seven-part series on Derek Jeter which debuts July 18; “Kaepernick & America,” which examines the travails of former NFL QB Colin
Kaepernick; “McEnroe,” a bio of fiery tennis legend John McEnroe which will be broadcast on Showtime in September; and “38 at the Garden” which recalls Jeremy Lin’s heroics as a Knicks player a decade ago. The “Linsanity” doc will be shown on HBO and HBO MAX this fall. The Fancy Food Show returned to Javits Center after a three-year hiatus. While there were some caviar companies there, the term “fancy food” is a bit of a misnomer. “Better eating” might be a more accurate term. Mark Shuket, the CEO of Old World Provisions, bought the Carnegie Deli name years ago. “We have a Carnegie Deli kiosk at Madison Square Garden, but what most people don’t know is we provide all of the pastrami at Citi Field even though it doesn’t have the Carnegie Deli branding.” And yes, Shuket is proud to be an enthusiastic Mets fan. “My wife’s uncle bought the Mets’ first season ticket plan in their history. “Alex Cohen (wife of Mets CEO Steve Cohen) paid him a visit recently,” he said proudly. Brooklyn’s terrific pizza restaurant, Table 87, which has a stand at Barclays Center, was also displaying its wares at Javits Center.

JAZZ & BLUES CHRIS TORKEWITZ “NY ENSEMBLES” Composer-arranger-saxophonist-flutist-pianist Chris Torkewitz had one of the highpoints of his many careers on March 21, 2013. He presented a concert of his original music performed by his Jazz Chamber Ensemble and his Jazz Orchestra, two ensembles formed specifically for the event. Nine years later, the full concert is being released for the first time, and it proves well worth the wait. The Jazz Chamber Ensemble, which consists of clarinet, bass clarinet, flute, harp, piano, string bass, drums, and a string quartet, begins the special concert with Torkewitz’s four-part “Chamber Suite.” While most of the music was written out, clarinetist Jay Rattman and violinist Curtis Stewart get plenty of solo space. Rattman improvises during part of all three movements while Stewart joins him towards the end of “Farbtoene.” Both soloists are featured on “Seiltanz.” NY Ensembles took a long time to be released but its rewarding music is timeless, quite modern while being accessible, and unique. It features Chris Torkewitz’s very individual writing at its best. TONY WILLIAMS’ LONG LOST TRIO ALBUM M.I.G. Music GmbH, an independent multi-genre recording label based in Hanover, Germany is set to release on July 22 on all digital platforms and CD (and a limited vinyl edition to be released in late 2022), an auspicious rare studio recording from the late legendary drummer Tony Williams while the imposing bandleader was on tour more than four decades ago. It’s 1980 and Tony Williams, perhaps best known for his seven-year stint with Miles Davis’ 1960s Quintet, before creating fusion with his impossibly brilliant 1969 album, Emergency! followed six years later by the equally influential Believe It, is somewhere in Europe on tour with a band of his choosing that is slowly disintegrating. With digital remastering performed by Johannes Scheibenreif, a renown mastering engineer from Vienna, Play or Die is reborn as a jazz power trio onslaught, with touches of rock grandeur and new wave fashion shaped by Williams, a time-traveling pioneer whose voice speaks today as forever fresh, innovative, and restless. The original master, not the re-release, was cut at SST Brüggemann in Frankfurt in 1980. The album closes with “There Comes a Time,” which swings lightly and delicately but savagely and directly, as only Williams could. His vocal here adds a bittersweet note to Play or Die, a phrase that encompassed Williams’ life. Williams’ music was like his life, played for all it was worth. WHEELS & DEALS Oneida’s members juggle a wide variety of other music projects. Drummer Kid Millions has played with Spiritualized, Royal Trux and Boredoms and releases solo compositions under his own name and as Man Forever. Shahin Motia founded noise-punk’s Ex Models and currently plays in Knyfe Hyts. Kid and Fat Bobby perform and release music as People of the North, and Bobby has a band called New Pope (postpunk/minimalist duo/trio) releasing a second fulllength this year (Shinkoyo).
KRISTEEN YOUNG THE BEAUTY SHOP Like her 2019 album, The SubSet, Kristeen wrote, arranged, and produced The Beauty Shop. She has always been a DIY artist in the most classic sense: standing alone, outside, and in between categories. She plays piano in a sort of bashing/dissonant manner (but melodic at times) and sings using a wide range (of notes and emotion) that veers into operatic territory. But, the music is best described as no genre or multigenre and she has done this for 9 albums. It might be a popular (non)category now but this was not so 9, 8, 7 and even 1 album ago. She stood outside, alone. She is a pioneer and iconoclast. “Me too” happened. “The Enlightenment” happened. She still stands outside, alone. “Is there real change or only a change of guard?”
NYC’S ONEIDA NEW SINGLE Sometimes even the longest journey ends close to where you started. Throughout the teens, Oneida pushed further and further into abstract, atmospheric sounds, recording long haunting compositions that couldn’t have been more different than the pulsing, hammering anthems of their past. But now they return with Success, their most guitar-centric, rock album in decades. It kicks off with “Beat Me to the Punch,” a song that is minimal like the best Ramones songs are minimal, pared back to beat and melody and a limited number of guitar chords. It’s an uncomplicated pleasure from the get-go, and if it’s ripped in half later by a corrosive guitar solo, well, what did you expect? This is Oneida. Oneida has long straddled gray-area boundaries between the NYC punk/psych/rock world and the art/ experimental world, playing at gritty rock clubs and elevated cultural institutions, including the Guggenheim, MoMA PS1, ICA London, MassMOCA and the Knoxville Museum of Art. The band has been known for extended live improvisational performances, collaborating onstage with Mike Watt, members of Flaming Lips, Portishead, Boredoms, Yo La Tengo, Dead C, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and many others.
NON STOP TO CAIRO “MILLION DOLLAR SPACE Five years after their debut full-length “Dabble Heavy”, Nonstop To Cairo return with their sophomore offering “KAI”, which once again showcases the Long Island outfit’s irresistible blend of rock, rap, ska, funk, and punk. After years of tearing the roof off of joints with their electrifying live show, KAI captures Nonstop To Cairo’s irrepressible onstage energy while also adding a touch of polish, resulting in a listening experience that’s as inviting as it is invigorating. And, as KAI’s glorious eruption of sound shows, the band has grown ever more fluent in its melange of styles. This time, Nonstop To Cairo ease their way from bracing punk (album opener “Awkward Situations”) to smooth-sailing reggae (“Throw It Away”) to jazz-inflected funk (“Pope Funk”) to classic rock (“Hand of Fate”), to heartfelt, blues balladry driven by horns and organ (“Not Today”), etc. Where hairpin turns from one genre to the next were once part of the thrill, the band now glides with agility and grace, as if all of its influences have finally gelled into a seamless whole and a signature style that it can claim as its own...

Electric Forest
John Muir once said, “And into the forest I go to lose my mind and find my soul.” This quote could not be more perfect to describe the feeling of being in the forest, detached from normal life and the mundanity of society. The forest holds something different; something unique and wonderful. It is within the forest that so much comes to life and a breath of fresh air can be taken and spirits reconnected. This couldn’t be more accurate than when talking about Electric Forest Festival and the pure joy, freedom, and oneness I saw on display at this amazing event. After three long years away, the forest family was reunited the last weekend of June in Rothbury, Michigan for a truly one of a kind, immersive experience in the forest. It felt like myself and everyone around me was back home again. “Happy Forest” echoed across the weekend with hugs and high fives distributed around by everyone in sight. The energy was unique and something I missed so dearly. The festival packed more than 150 artists into 4 days of beauty. I got to bring along a few first timers who had never been to the forest and never been to a camping festival before. And they insisted they would be back in every following year they were able to. From the moment you park your car, there is nonstop action happening all around you. Music could be heard coming from every campsite. A walk down Main Street in the camping area flooded the senses with tons of great food, ambiance, and merch tents stocked with everything from pashminas to pins to hats and tapestries. Stop by the Brainery to get your dose of knowledge on any number of obscure topics brought to you by forest families themselves. I got to catch a slam poetry session there with attendees putting themselves out there and reading poems they had written. It was a beautiful thing to see so many people sharing their art with complete strangers all brought together by this one event. After crossing through the entrance gate to the festival grounds, that is when everything changed. From the giant art installations sur-

rounding you to the giving tree to share and trade items with other people to the immersive forest, one could spend all weekend just exploring and not listening to any music and still need more time. The tall trees gave wonderful shade to everyone within it and the number of cool hidden gems and beauty that lie in the forest were infinite. Several stages reside in the forest as well, making for a connected experience with the artists playing them. The Honeycomb stage is in the center of a circle with all the fans intimately close and surrounding the artists playing there. A stop by the Trading Post could yield a surprise set or maybe a little bit of a barter with a staff member for a pickle. Handmade art hanging from the trees puts you into a different world and makes you never want to leave. If you were in the forest at just the right time and place, you could have caught a pop up set by Jason Leech or Porter Robinson at the organ in the forest. All the stages were masterfully set up and I love what they did with the Carousel Club this year; turning it from a smaller venue at the back of the Hangar area to it’s own giant tented stage with seating and room for thousands of people. I caught some amazing acts there including DJ_Dave, Lettuce, and Brandon “Taz” Niederauer. It had a cool bit of a Las Vegas vibe to it but without any of the negatives about Las Vegas. Sherwood Court stage seemed to have the most upgrades brought to it with better stage design and lighting, making it feel like another main stage to host the likes of Clozee, LSDream, Big Gigantic, and Sunsquabi. It’s clear that much attention was paid to making this year’s festivities some of the best ever. Griz’s Friday night set had to take the cake for me as it was nonstop energy, heavy bass music, funk, house music, and just all around good vibes from the man himself. Griz also made several guest appearances at other sets throughout the weekend which of course made me beam with happiness. Deathpact’s set did not disappoint with all of the glitchy bass goodness one could hope for. Wax Motif and John Summit brought that good house sound and got
the crowd moving the whole time. LSDream’s set was a trip into another dimension and his alter ego, Lightcode, did a 2pm sound bath that put the entirety of the forest into a meditative state. Louis the Child was the biggest surprise for me and really brough that diversity of sound and upbeat energy to the night, spanning all genres of music and just an all around great set. Lighting design and visuals at the festival were unparalleled, with enough intricate work to make anyone fall in love; not to mention the plethora of lasers shooting out from all areas of the stage. The final moments of Electric Forest were bitter sweet, but as with anything good, it must come to an end at some point. I’m so blessed to have been able to experience that weekend with some amazing people and cannot wait to be back home in 2023. Until next time forest.

COUNTRY KELLY CLARKSON RELEASES KELLYOKE EP GRAMMY-winning global superstar Kelly Clarkson has released her blockbuster KELLYOKE EP – available now via Atlantic Records. Preceded by a mighty rendition of Billie Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever” & including a standout cover of Whitney Houston’s “Queen Of The Night,” the 6-track collection features new studio recordings of some of Clarkson’s favorite covers performed on The Kelly Clarkson Show, ranging from modern hits to timeless classics. Since the premiere of The Kelly Clarkson Show in 2019, Kellyoke has become an institution in its own right with over 500 songs covered to date and counting. The fan-favorite segment sees Clarkson and her band, Y’all, turn audience requests and personal favorites into stunning performances that captivate viewers and the internet alike. A longtime staple of Clarkson’s live show, the series was helmed by her long-time music director Jason Halbert, who along with vocal director Jessi Collins expertly tailor the performances for what has been deemed “one of the best things to happen to daytime television” by Vulture and “wildly popular” by Billboard. BILLY DEAN FIRST ALBUM IN DECADE Nineties country hitmaker Billy Dean announced his new first country album in a decade. On July 22, Dean, often referred to as “the James Taylor of country music,” will release The Rest of It’s Mine (BFD / Audium Nashville), a 10-track collection of songs that reflects a place very near and dear to his heart: his home state of Florida. Born and raised in Quincy, Florida, the GRAMMY Award-winning singer-songwriter returned to his panhandle roots in 2018, now residing with his wife Stephanie on the beaches of St. George Island. Dean says Florida is where he feels most alive. Dean, an accomplished songsmith, co-wrote nine of the ten songs on the compilation. Co-writers include Brent Rader (who also produced the project), Tom Woodard, Monty Powell, David Duncan, as well as Dean’s personal friends and Florida natives Hugh and Cody Vanlandingham. He and veteran songwriter Paul Overstreet wrote the album’s title track and first single, “The Rest of It’s Mine.” The album includes a special bonus track— a 30th anniversary re-recorded version of Dean’s smash hit, “Somewhere in My Broken Heart,” performed with a full symphony orchestra.

THOMAS RHETT CELEBRATES 19TH NO.1 Multi-platinum entertainer Thomas Rhett’s “poignant, powerful” (CMT) song “Slow Down Summer” (The Valory Music Co.) hit the top spot on the Country Aircheck/Mediabase chart, earning the hitmaker his 13th consecutive charttopper and 19th career No.1. The “ethereal, genre-blending” (American Songwriter) hit is an ode to young love and was penned by Thomas Rhett, his father Rhett Akins, Sean Douglas, Jesse Frasure, and Ashley Gorley. Also released was the superstar’s new single “Half Of Me” featuring Riley Green. Written by Thomas Rhett, Rhett Akins, William Bundy and Josh Thompson, the playful track beckons listeners to put away the to-do list and kick back with an ice cold beer. “Today is a really cool day,” Thomas Rhett said. “I’m pretty blown away to be celebrating my 19th No. 1 with ‘Slow Down Summer’ and the release of my new single ‘Half Of Me.’ I wrote both of these songs with my dad, which is special to me, and several other truly incredible songwriters. I hope fans have as much fun singing along to ‘Half Of Me’ as we did writing it.”

RHYTHM TRACKING
With Jimi LaLumia
Illness and death seem to be the current theme of rock and pop performers; not a week goes by without another headline and another death. The grim reality is that the golden age of rock stars has come and gone, as contemporary music is now based on Top 40 pop stars. The idea of ‘the album’, a much revered symbol of the mid to late 1960’s, is ancient history. The internet certainly helped in that format’s demise, as individual tracks/downloads became the new gold standard. What are the chances of a theme/concept album ever taking hold of the music consumers in the current marketplace? Zero to none, actually. Of course, artists performing live will still fill up arenas and stadiums worldwide, now that covid has hopefully peaked, but sadly that fact doesn’t translate into actual sales of recorded music. When was the last time you heard about a ‘record label’(remember them?) signing a new artist for a tremendous amount of money; the answer is, you haven’t because that doesn’t happen anymore; none of the events associated with those types of transactions happen anymore; the business has been reduced to its current status by technology and nothing is ever going to reverse the way things are. Meanwhile, deaths and illness of existing ‘stars’ continue to mount. The latest subject of such reports of Ozzy Osborne, who amazingly is still alive after years of speculation about his health status; it’s amazing that he is still around after so many have passed away, but the flow of bad/sad news is likely far from over: if you get the chance to go see one of your favorite artists in the near future, take advanatage of the opportunity while you still can.
METAL OZZY ‘PATIENT NUMBER 9’ Mark September 9th on your calendar as the release date for PATIENT NUMBER 9, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and Grammy-winning singer and songwriter OZZY OSBOURNE’s new album and the first since his critically acclaimed, worldwide, chart-topping 2020 ORDINARY MAN release. Produced by Andrew Watt (who handled the same duties on ORDINARY MAN) and set for release on Epic, the new album marks OSBOURNE’s 13th solo studio album. It’s heavy, it’s hard-hitting, it’s historic--it’s everything you’d want from an OZZY OSBOURNE record and maybe more. “Patient Number 9” was written by OZZY, Watt, Robert Trujillo, Chad Smith and Ali Tamposi and features a riveting solo from legendary guitarist Jeff Beck. Working with producer Watt for the second time, OZZY welcomed a dynamic A-list supporting cast. The record boasts guitarists Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, and longstanding righthand man and six-string beast Zakk Wylde who plays on the majority of the tracks. For the bulk of the album, Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers held down drums, while the late Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters made an appearance. Old friend and one-time OZZY band member Robert Trujillo of Metallica plays bass on most of the album’s tracks, with Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses and Chris Chaney of Jane’s Addiction supplying bass on a few songs. For the first time ever, Black Sabbath co-founder, guitarist, and riff-lord Tony Iommi appears on an OZZY solo album. JUDAS PRIEST 50 METAL YEARS TOUR One of heavy metal’s all-time greats, Judas Priest, will get the opportunity to celebrate their 50th anniversary again this year with the launch of a new North American fall tour. The 50 Heavy Metal Years Tour will also feature Queensryche as openers and is being fueled by the highest charting album of Priest’s career, ‘Firepower,’ which peaked at #5 on the Billboard 200. Additionally in 2022, Priest band members Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, Ian Hill and Scott Travis will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Judas Priest originally formed in 1970 in Birmingham, England (an area that many feel birthed heavy metal). The original nucleus of musicians would go on to change the face of heavy metal. Throughout the 70’s Priest were responsible for helping trail blaze metal with such classic offerings as ‘Sad Wings of Destiny’ (1976) ‘Sin After Sin’ (1977) and ‘Hell Bent for Leather’ (1978) as well as one of the genre’s top live recordings ‘Unleashed in the East’ (1979) among others. It was during the 80’s that Priest conquered the world, becoming a global arena headliner on the strength of such all-time classics as ‘British Steel’ (1980) and ‘Screaming for Vengeance’ (1982), and being the first band to exclusively wear leather and studs – a look that began during this era and would eventually be embraced by metal heads throughout the world. Priest’s success continued throughout the 90’s and beyond with the addition of drummer Scott Travis, as evidenced by such additional stellar offerings as ‘Painkiller’ (1990) ‘Angel of Retribution’ (2005) and ‘A Touch of Evil: Live’ (2009) the latter of which saw Priest win a Grammy Award for a killer rendition of the classic ‘Dissident Aggressor’.
KATE BUSH Better late than never, UK music icon Kate Bush is in the U.S. Top Ten Billboard singles chart with “Running Up That Hill”, a UK hit single from decades ago that was recently used in a popular TV series in America, “Stranger Things”. Kate is one of those huge British stars who never really got off the ground in America, despite being signed to a U.S. record label at the time(the 1980’s); hopefully this will bring her the large audience that she deserves in America. Now if only some U.S. tv series uses a single by long time Rhythm Tracking fave Toyah (huge in the UK in the 80’s) in a popular weekly series, will I finally find peace...oh, well, you never know. Congratulations to Kate Bush, come and tour America sometime soon.

QUEENSRŸCHE “IN EXTREMIS” QUEENSRŸCHE announced their 16th studio album, Digital Noise Alliance, set for release on October 7th.To celebrate the announcement the band have released their new song and music video “In Extremis” off the forthcoming release. “This song is about being on your deathbed surrounded by your loved ones. Clinging to the last sense available, letting them know you will still be hearing them after correspondence or perceived consciousness is visible. Other conceptual metaphors flash in and out, taking note of a world that will not bend to accommodate such suffering, a universe of mockery, and a universe void of such abilities,” states QUEENSRŸCHE about “In Extremis”. With a career that not only spans, but has charted the course of multiple genres, QUEENSRŸCHE remains a force in their own right with the new release that continues the ever-evolving legacy the Bellevue, Washington born band began in 1982 when they first hit the scene with their well-received self-titled EP. Once again teaming up with producer Zeuss (Rob Zombie, Hatebreed), Digital Noise Alliance not only refracts QUEENSRŸCHE’s past accomplishments but also pushes into the band’s future. It is the band effortlessly moving from strength to strength: immediate and thought-provoking. Quintessentially QUEENSRŸCHE. Right after the release of Digital Noise Alliance, the band will embark on another tour opening for the mighty Judas Priest on their “50 Heavy Metal Years” tour.
BITS & PIECES loose, spontaneous and written on the fly in the studio during improvisatory fits of inspiration. G. Love will be touring throughout the year as a solo performer, with a new rotating cast of players called The Juice, or with his longtime trio G. Love and Special Sauce.
PAUL MCCARTNEY: MCCARTNEY I II III Written, performed and produced entirely by Paul McCartney, his three eponymous career-spanning solo albums (1970’s McCartney, 1980’s McCartney II, and 2020’s McCartney III) will now be packaged together and available in one special box set for the first time August 5th. McCartney I II III box set will be available in three different formats – Limited Edition Color Vinyl, Black Vinyl Edition and CD – each including three special photo prints with notes from Paul about each album. McCartney, the Number One Album was Paul’s first solo album released in 1970 and features timeless tracks “Every Night”, and “Junk,” along with the immortal classic “Maybe I’m Amazed”. This album saw a global music superstar pioneer a novel homespun approach to recording that would in time become a sought-after sound, and the highly influential precursor to the “lo-fi” alternative genre. TIËSTO AND CHARLI XCX BRING THE HEAT GRAMMY Award-winning, platinum-certified, international icon Tiësto has joined forces with pop superstar Charli XCX on “Hot in It,” certified song of the summer and anthemic banger that’s radiating confidence around the world with its empowering lyrics. The sound for “Hot in It” was teased early by Charli XCX on TikTok where the hype and anticipation began to grow, garnering 50M views to date, and fans can finally hear the full song. “I knew from the second I heard Charli’s cut on the song that it was going to be a smash, and it’s been amazing to see how everyone has been reacting to the message of the song.” said Tiësto. “The heat on this one is incredible, so excited it’s finally out in the world!” “I’m very excited to get hot in it this summer” - Charli XCX “Hot in It” is the fourth single from Tiësto’s upcoming album including his three previous certified hit singles “The Business”, “Don’t Be Shy” with Karol G, and The Motto with Ava Max totaling 2.5 billion global streams. Love has released his new album Philadelphia Mississippi via Philadelphonic Records/Thirty Tigers. Produced by North Mississippi All-Stars’ Luther Dickinson (son of Jim Dickinson who produced G. Love’s sophomore album Coast to Coast Motel), this melting pot of a record bridges both sides of G. Love’s eclectic career, mixing old school Hill Country and Delta Blues with new school hip-hop and funk. Highlights from the record include the intoxicating blues number “Mississippi (feat. Speech, Alvin Youngblood Hart and R.L. Boyce) , the playful “Laughing In The Sunshine” and “Love From Philly” (feat. Schoolly D, Chuck Treece and Trenton Ayers), a signature dose of hip-hop and the blues. These 13 songs are
KIP MOORE IGNITES NEW TRACK Multi-platinum singer/songwriter Kip Moore is sharing his electrifying new track “Fire On Wheels” and an accompanying new music video. Co-written and co-produced by Moore and Jaren Johnston (The Cadillac Three), the new track is a volume-up, groove-driven anthem. Moore also shared a new music video for the song which showcases some “Risky Business”-esque dance moves as he cuts loose in an almost-deserted bowling alley. Directed by PJ Brown. With “Fire On Wheels” embodying the energy of Moore’s life out on the road, he also revealed his multi-city FIRE ON WHEELS TOUR will kick off in Salt Lake City, UT on 9/8. Moore has invited special guests Boy Named Banjo to join him this fall, on the trek that will see Moore bring his renowned live show to cities across the country, as well as a stop in Canada. Fans can purchase tickets for Moore’s FIRE ON WHEELS TOUR at kipmoore.net. THIRD EYE BLIND 25TH ANNIVERSARY ALBUM Third Eye Blind is commemorating the 25th anniversary of their self-titled debut with Unplugged, a new album of reimagined 3eb songs, out on Mega Collider Records. “We wanted to make a comprehensive retrospective, but we couldn’t,” says Stephan Jenkins. “We can’t seem to say what 3eb is because we’re still actively figuring that out. In the studio, I came even more to grips with Virgil Abloh’s thought, that everything in art and music is prototype.” Unplugged is available now on all platforms. “Twenty-five years of Third Eye Blind finds us feeling glorious as if everything is coming into deeper focus,” adds Stephan. “It’s not lost on us that this is a miracle, and that we are in it because of the new fans that keep discovering us and the people who, over the years, have made our music part of their culture.” The band is sharing a video for the previously unreleased, live favorite “Second Born,”directed by Stephane Laurencin, along with lyric videos for “Red Star”and “How’s It Going to Be.” 50 YEARS OF “AMERICAN PIE Legendary artist and Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Don McLean celebrated the 50th anniversary of his iconic staple single “American Pie” with a brand-new Remix by Australian electronic dance music phenomenon L’Tric. The Remix released by UMe/Capitol adds another dimension to this classic. It layers McLean’s instantly recognizable vocals above glossy percussive dancefloor-ready production. The immortal refrain rings out as powerfully and poignantly as ever over the pulsating beat and shimmering keys. Don McLean was personally involved in the making of the remix providing his input and notes. Continuing the celebration of this landmark, the American Pie Children’s Book is also now available. Meanwhile, a brand-new documentary, THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED: THE STORY OF DON McLEAN’S “AMERICAN PIE,” debuts on Paramount+ July 19. McLean will, for the first time, powerfully reveal and share the secrets behind his iconic song. Good Times Magazine - July 12 - August 9, 2022 • 23
