BROOKLYN MUSEUM McCARTNEY PHOTOS

As The Beatles captured the hearts of millions, Paul McCartney captured it all on his Pentax film camera. Paul McCartney Photographs 1963–64: Eyes of the Storm takes visitors inside the 1963–64 frenzy of Beatlemania, as the band’s first U.S. tour skyrocketed them to global fame. More than 250 of McCartney’s photographs, recently rediscovered in his archives, reveal his singular vantage point at the center of this whirlwind of attention and adoration. The exhibition makes its New York debut at the Brooklyn Museum, opening May 3rd.

In an immersive installation of photography, video clips, and archival material, Eyes of the Storm traces the period when The Beatles played concert halls in Liverpool and London and began to tour internationally, first to Paris and then to the United States. McCartney’s photographs convey the intensity of the band’s touring schedule in the U.S., as the Fab Four were swept from concerts to hotels to the road. McCartney’s explorations in photography reflect his commitment to both the musical and visual arts. The range of work, from portraiture and landscape photos to documentary images, reveals McCartney’s familiarity with the formal styles of early 1960s photography. References to New Wave, documentary filmmaking, and photojournalism can be found across the exhibition.

IN THE WHALE FILM AT WHBPAC

In the shark-filled waters off Cape Cod, Michael Packard has long tempted fate.

For several months a year, Packard and his longtime mate, Josiah Mayo, cast off nearly every morning around dawn and navigate through the half-light to their diving grounds off Provincetown, the idiosyncratic, isolated community where they grew up at the tip of the Cape. Packard buckles on his scuba tank and plunges into the cold waters to hunt on the seafloor.

But what happened to him on a routine dive during a clear June morning was something he never imagined possible, and many around the world refused to believe.

In an experience of biblical proportions, Packard was engulfed by a humpback whale, caught in the watery cavity of its massive mouth. After some 30 seconds of a pitch-black

captivity, in which he expected to die, he was spit out, fins first, to the surface, where Mayo and another fisherman rescued him.

The publicity was similarly dizzying for the reclusive fisherman, whose survival story spread around the world in news dispatches. But what came after the limelight dimmed was even more significant for Packard.

The film will be shown March 2nd, 7 p.m. at The Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center, 76 Main Street, Box Office: 631-288-1500

BOUNTIFUL GOURMET: VINCENT’S CLAM BAR

Italian food lovers on Long Island have an infinite number of choices for really good food. From the neighborhood pizzeria that stuns with surprise dishes, to the upscale restaurants that offer selections from every region of Italy, we have it all.

Tucked away in the corner of a strip mall on Glen Cove Road in Nassau is a true gem for fine Italian dining. The Original Vincent’s Clam Bar has a colorful history that goes back over 100 years in Little Italy.

Remarkably, the fantastic food and true Italian experience was replicated in 1979 when the Carle Place location was opened.

Stepping inside Vincent’s, prepare to go back in time, to the time when flourish and décor was exciting. Vincent’s Carle Place is an oasis, serving outstanding food and in an beautiful environment. When you’re in Vincent’s, you are not on Long Island. You’re somewhere in Italy. Look around, the brass and polished railings shine.

Vincent’s is very full, whether it’s lunch or dinner. Look around and you’ll discover a a clientele that spans multiple generations. Grandparents, families, kids, teens, you name it, being in Vincent’s is like being in an Italian piazza where families melt together, enjoying each other’s company and the good food.

Ahh, the food. The owners of Vincent;s, Bobby and Tommy Marisi are magicians, serving up high quality food at very reasonable prices.

Start off with an appetizer. You might want to try the oversized garlic knot, a monster brushed with butter and delicious. Or the very tender calamari, always a standout.

Move on to the main course and you are overwhelmed. You might want to try

the STRANGLED PRIEST Homemade Strozzapretti, Crumbled Sausage, and Soppressata Tossed in a Creamy Pink Sauce or perhaps LOBSTER RAVIOLI Served In A Creamy Vodka Sauce, Topped With Grilled Shrimp And Basil. My personal favorite, which I know sounds boring compared to the many great selections is CHICKEN CUTLET PARMIGIANA served with Pasta, Vincent’s “World Famous” Sauce, and Melted Mozzarella. The sauce is outstanding, made with San Marzano tomatoes, those rich and sweet tomatoes that are famous world wide. And have it with pasta on the side, choosing from several offerings. Dining Alert! The portions are gargantuan.

Moving ahead to dessert, try the CANNOLI SUNDAE Vanilla

Ice Cream, Cannoli Shell Chips, Fresh Whipped Cream, Chocolate Chips and Cannoli Cream or the NAPOLEON Hand Whipped Bavarian Cream Layered in a Flaky Pastry Crust and Dusted with Powdered Sugar.

Wash it all down with the GINGERBREAD LATTE Espresso with Steamed Milk, Whipped Cream & Gingerbread Syrup with Gingerbread Cookie.

And, regulars in the know show up en masse for Vincent’s Lunch Specials, served from noon to 4 p.m. A fantastic selection off the regular menu, in portion sizes that approach dinner, all for only $15.95.

Don’t miss out on a fabulous meal, great vibes and outstanding service. Vincent’s Clam Bar is located at 179 Old Country Rd., Carle Place Reservations are strongly recommended through Open Table or (516) 742-4577. If you want to thank me for one of the best meals, you’ve ever had, send me a jar of their famous sauce. And remember their motto: “Legalize Marinara.”

SPORTS BEAT

Long Island lost a great ambassador when Bud Harrelson succumbed last month to Alzheimer’s Disease at the age of 79. While the Mets Hall of Fame shortstop will always be remembered as a member of the 1969 Miracle team, and the 1973 “Ya Gotta Believe!” squad, he was instrumental in getting the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League off the ground 25 years ago, as he served as both a co-owner and field manager of the team.

Many years ago, Harrelson told me the key to the Ducks’ attendance success. “We are not competing with the Mets. We are competing with the movies. We price our tickets and concessions with that in mind.”

Harrelson was also the third base coach for the 1986 World Series champion New York Mets. The team announced last month it would be retiring Dwight “Doc” Gooden’s #16, and outfielder Darryl Strawberry’s #18, uniform numbers.

In a Zoom press conference both Gooden and Strawberry admitted they did not live up to their potential because of substance abuse. They both cited being too young and immature to handle the success and fame which they quickly achieved. Strawberry also regretted leaving the Mets for the Los Angeles Dodgers as a free agent in 1991.

Ed Lynch was a teammate of both Strawberry and Gooden. The former Mets pitcher will never have his uniform number retired, but it is hard to find a better baseball renaissance man. Lynch has been a player, scout, minor league director, and general

manager. He is also an attorney and a real estate broker. He brings all those perspectives together in his now podcast, “Surfing Baseball with Ed Lynch,” which is available on YouTube, Facebook, and every podcast platform imaginable.

“I want to give my opinions on what is right and wrong with the game,” Lynch told me when we spoke last month. “Pitchers are being taught to throw at maximum velocity as opposed to learning how to pitch. Teams baby starting pitchers by limiting them to six innings a game. This burns out your bullpen

by the time the playoff race heats up in late August. Hitters are taught to swing as hard as possible and to worry about launch angle instead of the importance of making solid contact,” he said. He also decried the lost art of small ball, where productive outs move runners around the bases to score runs.

Lynch is aware many Mets fans are grumbling about the lack of big names new team baseball president David Stearns has acquired. “He is a bright guy. I guarantee he will use owner Steve Cohen’s financial resources to acquire a big-name player during the season when that player’s current team decides they can no longer afford him.”

ESPN’s Pat McAfee found himself in a no-win position when his weekly guest, injured Jets QB Aaron Rodgers, went rogue by saying how latenight ABC talk show host Jimmy Kimmel would be unhappy when the Jeffrey Epstein client list was released. Since ESPN and ABC are both owned by the Disney Corporation, McAfee quickly apologized to Kimmel since there was no basis for Rodgers’ outlandish statement. McAfee is getting paid $17 million per year by ESPN. You can be certain both ESPN CEO James Pitaro and Disney czar Robert Iger were not happy with Rodgers and McAfee. Nevertheless, McAfee brings in lots of viewers so he should survive the Rodgers nonsense.

It is surprising the Professional Bull Riders do not make a stop at either the UBS Arena or the Nassau Coliseum. They always start the year at Madison

Prime Video has just debuted “Giannis: The Marvelous Journey.” The documentary is a candid look at the life of Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is often affectionately referred to as “The Greek Freak” for what he can do on a basketball court. Giannis is also one of the most cerebral and polite athletes you will ever find.

The New York Islanders shook things up last month by firing head coach Lane Lambert and replacing him with Patrick Roy who was a Hall of Fame goalie with the Montreal Canadians. It will be interesting to see whether Roy can get the underachieving Isles into the 2024 NHL playoffs.

The Pinstripe Bowl, held every year at Yankee Stadium, never has any national

implications, but it has a become a New York holiday week staple which always draws a good crowd. That was the case this year as over 35,000 spectators watched Rutgers defeat the University of Miami by a score of 31-24.

Sports Illustrated, once the most prestigious sports periodical in America, appears to have its days numbered as it sent out layoff notices to its entire staff. The handwriting has been on the wall for SI ever since Warner Media sold it to Meredith Publications, which in turn sold it to The Authentic Group, which then licensed it to the Arena Group. Arena defaulted on a $3.75 million payment to Authentic which triggered the bad news. Sports Illustrated, like most glossy magazines, has been badly hurt by the Internet.

Famed creators of magic, Penn & Teller, are bringing their unique version of magic and comedy to Sound Waves at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on Thursday and Friday, May 16 and 17 at 8 p.m.

Tickets for Penn & Teller can be purchased at HardRockHotelAtlanticCity.com and Ticketmaster.com or 800-745-3000.

In 2023, Penn & Teller celebrated 48 years of professional partnership. From humble beginnings busking on the streets of Philadelphia to acclaimed sold–out runs on Broadway to the longest-running, and one of the most-beloved resident headline acts in Las Vegas history, magic’s legendary duo continues to defy labels—and at times physics and good taste — by redefining the genre of magic and inventing their own very distinct niche in comedy. Their record-breaking Las Vegas show has an amazing nine wins as “Las Vegas Magicians of the Year” and was called “The single best show in Vegas,” by the Los Angeles Times.

VIC DIBITETTO AT STALLER CENTER

As every snow storm nears, that video of a man yelling “I gotta get the bread and milk” yet again surfaces on social media. That man is Vic DiBitetto, and he’s coming back for his second appearance at the Staller Center!

`Vic delivers a custom show every single time. He’s an internet sensation with over 1 billion social media views worldwide, and brings with him a working-class brand of comedy he’s been crafting for over four decades. The self-proclaimed “Donkey of Comedy” loves to dole out irreverent takes on the world around him, including what it’s like to grow up as an Italian New Yorker.

In addition to his famous “Bread and Milk” bit, Vic DiBitetto is also known for his “Who Wants Coffee?” YouTube videos, and more recently, his Ticked Off Vic album, currently playing on SiriusXM comedy channels. He has also appeared on America’s Funniest People where he was a Grand Prize winner, as well as Stand Up Spotlight on VH1. DiBitetto easily brings you into his world, turning his everyday experiences into belly laughs that will continue even after he’s left the stage

COMEDY TRIO SOOSHI MANGO

Eight years ago, three average guys sat in their cars and started producing truly relatable content. Brothers Joe Salanitri, Carlo Salanitri and their best mate, Andrew Manfre came together for what started out as a fun hobby, which has now turned into what we know as ‘SOOSHI MANGO’.

Known for their loveable and relatable characters, the ethnic Dads (Johnny, Vince & Sam) & Mums (Giuseppina, Carmela & Angela), Joe, Carlo & Andrew pay homage to the older generations for the pure love and enjoyment they provide the world with.

This year they launched their first ever restaurant, “Johnny, Vince & Sam’s Ristorante” in Melbourne, Australia’s iconic, Lygon St. They took their podcast “The Saucy Meatballs Podcast” to LiSTNR, sold out their live comedy taping “Off the Boat Tour” at the Palais Theatre. Released their first song “Tarantella” with Joel Fletcher & Orkestrated and announced they’re taking their tour internationally. Adding more products to their already successful Johnny, Vince & Sam’s Vino range and currently in the process of creating their first feature film & TV Show.

They’re appearing Wednesday February 28th at Town Hall. For tickets and more info: https://www.sooshimango.com

THE MUSIC OF CROSBY, STILLS AND NASH

Michael Dorf Presents announced that the 19th annual Music of Tribute concert – this year celebrating the timeless music of Crosby, Stills and Nash – will take place at Carnegie Hall on May 13, 2024. This highly anticipated event comes on the heels of last-year’s sold-out Paul McCartney tribute concert, continuing the tradition of honoring legendary artists and their extensive songbooks while supporting music education for underserved youth.

The stellar lineup for The Music of Crosby, Stills and Nash, soon to be revealed, will bring together 20 artists to perform songs from the rich catalog of the band, as well as its members’ solo careers. This once-in-a-lifetime event promises to be an evening full of spectacular music and surprises, including participation from Graham Nash himself!

JONI MITCHELL SECOND HOLLYWOOD SHOW

Due to overwhelming demand, nine-time Grammy® Award Winner, Rock & Rock Hall of Famer, Kennedy Center Honoree, Gershwin-prize winner and music icon Joni Mitchell announced a second Hollywood Bowl show on October 20th. These will be her first shows in Los Angeles since 2000. Mitchell’s live return to California will feature Brandi Carlile and the Joni Jam.

Joni performed at the 66th Annual GRAMMY Awards. This was Mitchell’s first-ever performance at the GRAMMY Awards®; she was nominated for Best Folk Album (Joni Mitchell at Newport). Mitchell received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002, having been described as “one of the most important female recording artists of the rock era” and “a powerful influence on all artists who embrace diversity, imagination and integrity”.

Mitchell’s live return was commemorated earlier this year with Grammy-nominated JONI MITCHELL AT NEWPORT, the live album released by Rhino on CD and 2-LP black vinyl produced by close collaborator Brandi Carlile, along with Mitchell and featured liner notes by Cameron Crowe.

TRAIN & REO SUMMER ROAD TRIP

DADDY TAPES COMES HOME TO QUEENS

Bill Popp announced the 38th annual Daddy Tapes Benefit for The American Heart Association will be on Sunday March 3rd 2024 starting at 2 p.m. at The Irish Whiskey Bar located at 28-48 31st Street, Astoria and will feature many Astoria artists, as well as Manhattan notables. Throughout the years, the acts have been as diverse as rock legends Danny Kalb (founder of the Blues Project) to punk cabaret singer Nellie McKay and rock legend Lenny Kaye.

The first benefit was held on Daddy Tapes’ birthday, March 10, 1987, at CBGB. “My goal at the time was for the benefit to become an annual event that would raise money through the efforts of live music and help those suffering from heart disease,” says Bill Popp, founder of the event and Daddy Tapes’ son. “My father was my closest friend and the biggest supporter of my music career. After his death, I wanted to keep his spirit alive, so, by doing a benefit in his memory and donating the money to the American Heart Association, I’ve done just that.”

$10.00 suggested donation at the door or what you can give. For more information call Bill Popp at 718-3594110, cell 646-552-4110, e-mail billpopp@verizon.net, www.billpopp.com

HILARY GARDNER’S ON THE TRAIL

Alaska-raised, New York City-based vocalist Hilary Gardner’s new album, On the Trail with The Lonesome Pines, transports listeners to the nostalgic heart of the American West. The music paints soundscapes of the archetypal cowboy’s life on the trail—of pale dawns, purple hills, and the high lonesome feeling of camping out beneath a vast, star-filled sky.

Gardner’s jazz bona fides belie her rustic upbringing: she grew up in rural Alaska surrounded by vintage country music, and her first gigs as a teenager were performing Patsy Cline songs. In a return to her roots, Gardner began delving into repertoire from the “singing cowboy” era of the 1930s-40s, discovering a treasure trove of material ranging from atmospheric ballads tinged with melancholy to swing with a sense of humor. She says. “These ‘trail songs’ have been neglected for decades because they can’t be easily classified as jazz or country or pop or Americana—they’re a combination of all those genres, and they inhabit a sonic landscape uniquely their own, too.”

LANA NAUPHAL HAS LOVE-INDUCED HALLUCINATIONS

NYC-based singer-songwriter Lana Nauphal has unveiled “Is It Raining In California?” - the latest single and video from her forthcoming debut LP Wildland, produced by Tim Bidwell (Lucy Rose, Kate Walsh), set for release on May 24th.

“Is It Raining In California?” follows lead single and video, “Oh He Oh My.” “Driven by sprightly acoustic guitar strums and bright drums – all of which surround and support Nauphal’s rich and radiant voice – ‘Oh He Oh My’ proves an instantly irresistible introduction to the New York City-based singer/songwriter,” noted Atwood Magazine in their premiere. “Evoking beloved artist[s] like Ingrid Michaelson and She & Him (the duo led by Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward), Lana Nauphal is, intentionally or not, filling a much-needed gap in the current folk-pop space. Her first release is warm, inviting, and effortlessly catchy; if ‘Oh He Oh My’ proves something of a standard, then we’ll surely be falling for the entirety of Wildland in no time at all.”

JOE PIKET COPS 4TH “BEST” AWARD

You have to give Joe Piket credit ...he’s on a roll. He just copped Best Piano Player award for the fourth year in a row, and has released a new CD, Adult Themes, a soulful collection of exactly what the title says ...growing up, being in love, emptiness, relationships and aging wisely. Joe uses his voice to advantage, melding it with his piano and organ playing. His all-star band shines on each cut.

Joe PIket (ASCAP) is a two-time finalist in the Long Island Music Festival and four-time winner in the Best of Long island poll. He’s been described as “a more edgy Billy Joel”, and “the Bruce Springsteen of Long Island” by local reviewers. Joe Piket and the Storm have appeared with such diverse artists as Chuck Berry, Leon Russell, Jason Bonham, Dee Snider, Johnny Maestro, Renaissance, Alive and Kicking, Randy Jackson, Damon Johnson, and even TV personality/performer “Uncle” Floyd Vivino.

Most recently they played to a sold out audience at My Father’s Place in Roslyn, and they were also honored to be the first band asked to perform on the new soundstage at the Long Island Music Hall of Fame.

Rave reviews have appeared in Newsday, Good Times, and other print publications, as well as many on-line publications. Spring is shaping up to be an exciting time in the electronic world. Not only is this when big time artists are touring but the festival season is already kicking into high gear. One of the biggest events happening is the Texas Eclipse festival in Burnet, TX just an hour northwest of Austin. This festival is a once in a lifetime experience, bringing together music, art, space, and technology to help celebrate the total solar eclipse happening. The festival takes place April 5-9 with the eclipse happening on April 8. It includes top tier musical acts across numerous different genres. Some of the big hitters include Big Gigantic, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, Oteil and Friends, LSDream, Clozee, Tipper, Zingara, Vincent Antone, Subtronics, Zeds Dead, The String Cheese Incident, and so many more. This is just the beginning.

Each stage will have a different theme and different style of music as well. The Sun Stage is set to be a psychedelic trance playground with some of the most reputable names in this realm. Riktim will present his 1200 MICS set, a favorite in the global psychedelic world. Treavor Moontribe has been at the heart of Southern California’s underground scene, especially through the legendary full moon desert gatherings he helped pioneer at Moontribe Collective. As a DJ, his ability to curate a sonic journey that spans across multiple genres makes him a perfect fit for the eclectic and vibrant atmosphere of the Sun Stage. The Earth Stage is set to host the festival’s widest variety of music. There, a through-line of eclectic sounds weaves together a tapestry of talent whose styles range from traditional, indigenous, and folkloric live music to the most contemporary expression of sophisticated dance music. It all serves as a testament to the beauty of our interconnectedness while transcending geographical and cultural boundaries.

When you’re not out there listening to these amazing musical artists, there’s still plenty to do at Reveille Peak Ranch. The event also includes immersive experiences from the likes of Meow Wolf and Black Rock Observatory. Get your body moving with a whole host of yoga, meditation, and mindfulness sessions. The weekend also includes numerous talks from various astronauts, professors, and engineers all involved in space and technology. Topics will span the future of psychedelic medicine, artificial intelligence ethics, biohacking, circular design, unlocking human happiness, and much more. This is going to be an absolutely packed out event with non stop entertainment on all ends of the spectrum. It has something for everyone and will culminate with the total solar eclipse happening on the last day of the event. This festival is also a camping event, so bring your tents and good vibes to be part of a unique community living together and experiencing one of the celestial wonders of the world. There is regular car camping, group camping, glamping, and RV camping so whatever your style, there’s a place for you.

Lettuce is the king of funk music, always bringing the energy with their live horns and good vibes. So what better thing to do than to have the kings of electronic take one of your songs and give it that funky house energy we can all bounce to.

“Everything’s Gonna Be Alright (The Sponges Remix)” is out now and boy does this song really get me going. It’s everything I could have wanted in a song. It’s got the house feel, it’s got the horns, it’s got the bass, it’s got the funk. It’s always a good day when two of my favorite artists come together and release a classic with a new twist. I guarantee this one will have you moving all day and all night. If you’re looking for more of the wubs, LSDream has released 3 remix albums including a whole host of his songs reimagined by various artists. “Follow The Vibe (Lumasi Remix)” takes the cake for me as my favorite remix. It’s got all of the energy from the original song but gets even more spacey, weirder, and wilder.

Thanks for joining me on this galactic adventure. Feel free to reach out to me at richiegtechno@gmail.com. And remember, keep raging my friends!

CLASSIC ROCK

THE WHO LIVE AT SHEA STADIUM

1982 Mercury Studios will release the first official audio companion of Live At Shea Stadium 1982 on March 1st. Previously released on DVD and Blu-ray in June 2015, The Who (Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, and Kenney Jones) delivered both classic tracks and rarely performed songs: “Pinball Wizard,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” “My Generation,” “Substitute,” “Who Are You,” “I Can’t Explain,” “See Me Feel Me,” “Baba O’Riley,” and many more. The tour promoted the 1982 album It’s Hard and the set list was comprised of several tracks from that album, some of which the band would only play live on this tour.

The Who’s 1982 North American tour was their last to feature Kenney Jones on drums and the band did not tour again until 1989. This recording features the show from the second of their two nights at New York’s Shea Stadium and was recorded on October 13th 1982.

ALICE COOPER “THEATRE OF DEATH”

Alice Cooper invites music lovers on an unforgettable journey into the world of rock ‘n’ roll with a first time ever vinyl edition of his album Theatre Of Death — Live At Hammersmith 2009.

Feel the audience’s energy and experience Cooper’s unparalleled stage presence as he spins a macabre tale. This album not only highlights musical uniqueness, but also showcases the theatrical quality that makes Alice Cooper a pioneer in the field of rock spectacle. The recording takes you straight to the heart of the 2009 show and makes it a must for die-hard fans and newcomers to the exciting world of Alice Cooper. Hits such as “No More Mr. Nice Guy,” “School’s Out,” and “Poison” are showcased, among many others.

The limited vinyl first edition is pressed on two red 180g LPs and includes a DVD with the complete concert film. As an additional highlight, the package includes a numbered concert ticket replica that takes listeners back to Alice Cooper’s fascinating world of horror.

The title will be available everywhere from March 8.

ROLLING STONES LIVE AT THE WILTERN

The Rolling Stones will release The Rolling Stones Live At The Wiltern on DVD + 2CD; Blu-Ray + 2CD, 2CD, 3LP (3 variants: Black, Gold (D2C Exclusive), and Black & Bronze Swirl (Amazon Exclusive) on March 8th.

One of the greatest box-office successes of 2002/2003, 117 shows grossing over $300 million, The Rolling Stones’ “Licks World Tour”—in support of their 40 Licks compilation—celebrated the band’s 40th Anniversary in splendid fashion, highlighted by this intimate Nov. 22 Los Angeles show at The Wiltern. With its 2,000+-seat capacity, it would prove to be a welcome respite from the global stadiums and arenas. Fans knew they were in for something special when gems like “Stray Cat Blues,” “No Expectations” and “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love” (complete with the co-author of this 1964 Soul Classic, Soloman Burke) rocked the house.

Over 80 songs were performed on this tour from all eras of the band’s one-of-a-kind history. Mick Jagger played guitar, harmonica and keyboards at various stops. Keith Richards, stellar on guitar and vocals, provided both visual and musical highlights throughout the night. On stage right, Ron Wood’s complimentary guitar work weaves seamlessly with Richards’ playing. Drummer Charlie Watts [1941-2021], as always, was the heart’n’soul backbeat that drove the band forward.

BITS & PIECES

JAMES BROWN “WE GOT TO CHANGE”

UMe/Republic Records released James Brown’s We Got To Change, a three-track EP featuring the previously unheard title track, on Feb. 16. “We Got To Change” was recorded August 16, 1970, at Criteria Studios in Miami, during a pivotal period in the world of James Brown, as longtime members of his famed James Brown Orchestra had walked out a few months earlier.

“We Got To Change” is another example of James Brown’s social outreach (and outrage), seen in singles like “Don’t Be a Dropout,” “Say It Loud I’m Black and I’m Proud,” “Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved” and “King Heroin.” It is also a testament to Brown’s diverse musical language, quoting from Little Jimmy Dickens’ 1949 hit “Take an Old Cold Tater (And Wait)” and the African-American anti-war spiritual, “Down by the Riverside.”

The release of “We Got To Change” will precede James Brown: Say It Loud, a two-part, four-hour documentary about the life and music of the late “Godfather of Soul” that premieres February 19 and 20 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on A&E.

DUA LIPA SINGLE “TRAINING SEASON”

Three time GRAMMY and 6x BRIT Award-winning Dua Lipa announced her new single “Training Season” was released February 15th.

“Training Season” is the second single from Dua’s upcoming album, which will be out later this year. Dua also made a 30-second sound of the new single available to use on all shortform platforms.

The single announcement comes on the heels of Dua receiving three BRIT Award nominations including Artist of the Year, Best Pop Act and Song of the Year for “Dance The Night.” With the nominations, Dua was announced as one of the performers at this year’s BRIT Awards. Dua was last on the BRITs stage in 2021 when she performed a medley of hits from Future Nostalgia, which took home the Album of the Year award that night.

MARK KNOPFLER’S ONE DEEP RIVER

Mark Knopfler’s tenth solo studio album, One Deep River, is set for release on April 12 on his own British Grove label via Blue Note/EMI. The record will feature 12 new songs, highlighting Knopfler’s warm Geordie vocals, his poetic storytelling and richly melodic guitar playing.

The first single from the album, “Ahead Of The Game,” is out now, a wistful story about a singer/songwriter struggling to make it, set to a distinctively Knopfler riff. The album’s title track, “One Deep River,” reflects Knopfler’s deep affection for the river that runs through his childhood home city of Newcastle.

One Deep River was produced by Knopfler and his longstanding collaborator Guy Fletcher and was recorded at his state-of-the-art British Grove Studios in London. The album will be available on CD, double gatefold vinyl, cassette and a special limited-edition box set that will include the album on both vinyl and CD with nine exclusive bonus tracks on LP and CD, a litho print of Knopfler, a guitar pick set and tin and an enamel badge.

The band on One Deep River features Mark Knopfler on guitars, Jim Cox and Guy Fletcher on keyboards, Glenn Worf on bass, Ian Thomas on drums, Danny Cummings on percussion, Richard Bennett on guitar and newcomer Greg Leisz on pedal and lap steel.

WALLS HAVE EARS

Culled from three 1985 gigs in the UK during a transitional and transcendent time in the band’s story, Sonic Youth’s ‘Walls Have Ears’ appeared as a 2LP set in 1986, not just a live album but an artful tapestry full of live experimentation with songs, between-song tape segues, darkness, humor and audio verité on par with elements of side B of ‘Master Dik’ to come later. With a bit of complexity to the situation of the release itself. Deleted as quickly as it appeared, it’s now issued for the first time officially under the band’s auspices. In this 2LP set brimming with primitive classics like “The Burning Spear”, “I Love Her All The Time”, “Death Valley 69” and “I’m Insane” (uncredited on sleeve), segues and live guitar changes ooze together threaded by Madonna tapes and vocal loops off the board (somewhat a necessity for distraction until the band had a full fledged stage crew to prepare guitars). The first two sides of ‘Walls’ are massive, cavernous, with newly-drafted drummer Steve Shelley in tow taking on past tunes and unveiling “Expressway To Yr Skull” in glorious form. They tear it up especially on one trash-fi excerpt of “Blood On Brighton Beach.”

CHRISTIAN PARKER TRIBUTE TO THE BYRDS

On his last release, Sweethearts—an all-encompassing tribute to The Byrds’ classic, Sweetheart of the Rodeo, upstate New York recording artist Christian Parker wanted to prove his skills as an astute music student. On his upcoming LP Change is Now: A Tribute to The Byrds, he taps into the sounds that made him fall in love with music in the first place: the 12-string-strummed songs of The Byrds’ Roger McGuinn.

Parker has shared the album’s title track, “Change is Now,” from the band’s 1968 album, The Notorious Byrd Brothers. Parker’s version shares a tight stack of harmony vocals riding atop swirling guitar and peddling bass drones with the original. “When I first heard ‘Change Is Now’ by The Byrds, I thought it was psychedelic country music,” remembers Parker. “It started with a Rickenbacker 12-string guitar hook and three-part harmonies, and then the chorus came in with a pedal steel guitar.

Fans can purchase “Change is Now” after its March 22nd release. For more information, please visit christianparker.com.
