Long Island’s number one haunted attraction, Gateway’s Haunted Playhouse, returns for THREE ATTRACTIONS in its twelfth season of Halloween scares. Camp Restart at Campers’ Pike on the Forgotten Road at Southaven Park in Yaphank opens October 1st, Camp Terror at The Gateway in Bellport opens October 7th, and Gateway’s Not So Scary Adventure for Kids will begin on October 16. Tickets are $15 for Camp Terror and Campers’ Pike on the Forgotten Road is $25 per car and driver and $15 for each additional passenger. Disney On Ice Let’s Celebrate The celebration of the century comes alive in Disney On Ice presents Let’s Celebrate. This monumental ice-skating spectacular visits the brand new UBS Arena at Belmont Park, on the border of Queens and Nassau County, from January 5-9. North Hempstead to Host Autumn Treat

North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board announced the return of the annual fall favorite event, Autumn Treat on Thursday, October 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Clubhouse at Harbor Links in Port Washington. The event will have musical entertainment by Pat Farrell and the Cold Spring Harbor Band featuring the music of Billy Joel. After the performance, there will be an assortment of delicious fall treats and desserts. All attendees will be able to enjoy a large array of cookies, cakes, ice cream, coffees, teas, apple cider, and other delightful delicacies that are sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. Since 2012, World Burlesque Games has presented hundreds of International performing artists, awarding dozens of winners with Crowns, Titles, Certificates and Prizes. THE ARTS ARE BACK -AT THE STALLER CENTER The Arts are Back and they’re better than ever at the Staller Center for the 2021-22 season! After nearly two years of virtual programming, the Arts Center is reopening its doors and welcoming live performers from all genres this Fall. From jazz legends to some of America’s best dancers, the Center offers a variety-filled season, with safety measures in place as outlined below. Kicking off the Fall 2021 Season on September 25 is legendary trumpet player, Chris Botti, followed by the internationally renowned and award-winning quartet in residence, the Emerson String Quartet, featuring Philip Setzer and Eugene Drucker on violin, Lawrence Dutton on Viola, and

Paul Watkins on cello. October promises to be a laugh and song-filled month with Alan Cumming on October 23rd followed by Wayne Brady on October 30. Other shows include “Carnival of Animals,” a concert for Kids presented by the Staller Center’s Instrument Petting Zoo on November 7, followed by the return of “Starry Nights — Fall” on November 11, and R&B singer-pianist Sheléa will take the stage on November 13. Gold Coast International Film Festival 2021

The 2021 Gold Coast International Film Festival, taking place on October 10-17, will once again bring the best in new and independent films to audiences throughout the region. Over the past year, thousands have logged on to Gold Coast’s virtual films and filmmaker Q&As. Gold Coast, which recently marked its 25th anniversary, is now thrilled to welcome audiences back into the theater for a full slate of the type of award-winning feature length and short films that audiences have come to expect. Independent, documentary and foreign films will all be showcased at Manhasset Cinemas throughout the Festival week. Films and filmmaker Q&As will also be available virtually on GCIFF’s digital platform enabling the Festival to engage with audiences at home and living beyond our region. Additionally, the Festival will feature a great selection of outdoor film screenings and events. This year GCIFF will kick off with two great family events. Bountiful Gourmet...Burger Boys BURGER BOYS SCORES WITH DELICIOUS BURGERS North Shore burger lovers can rejoice. There’s finally a burger bar that can rival the best on the Island. Everyone knows how I love burgers. Burger King once said I should be the patron saint of the industry. So when I get a call from man about town and bon vivant Eppy, a man who knows his burgers also, I listen. I join Eppy for a lunch time feast at Burger Boys in Glen Cove. It is well worth the visit. Using top ingredients, owner Tony Lagos, who has owned a variety of restaurants in Long Island and Queens, has hit a home run. The 8 oz burgers are delicious and there’s an impressive list to choose from. We opt for the Cyclops, a beauty topped with bacon, fried onions and a fried egg, along with lettuce and tomato. It doesn’t fit in our mouth, but nothing we can’t handle. A winner. Other selections include the Pepperoni Pizza Burger, a beef burger topped with pepperoni, mozzarella cheese and marinara sauce, The Greek, a lamb burger with feta cheese, tomato, cucumber and

They have a excellent selection of salads including Greek, Cobb, Wedge, Caesar and House. The appetizers include mini rice balls, chicken quesadilla, Greek meatballs, coconut shrimp and more. The sides are really good. The burgers come with a mountain of fries, and the onion rings are large and a delight. Several times a week Tony has specials on the menu. On Thursdays and Saturdays he features an 18 oz Porterhouse, on Wednesday and Friday fish specials, and on other days Eggplant Parmigiana and meatloaf stuffed with Gouda cheese. When Major League Baseball released the 2021 schedule, showing the second round of the Subway Series would take place at Citi Field during the weekend when the 20th anniversary of the September 11th attacks took place, the Mets knew they had to deliver a ceremony which struck the right tone. While the team struggled on the field to the consternation of their fans this past season, they came through with flying colors as far as 9/11 was concerned. Yes, there were color guards, gigantic flags unfurled, and a plethora of elected officials, but it was the little things which made the night so memorable. Before the game began, many members of the 2001 Mets stood interspersed with New York City first responders along the right and left field lines. During the playing of our national anthem, Mets and Yankees players, who both wore “New York” on their uniforms, also interspersed along the first and third base lines. Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge and his Mets counterpart, Brandon Nimmo, played against each other in amateur ball as teens, and you could see they were happy to have a few un-

planned moments to get reacquainted. I spoke to some of the 2001 Mets who were at Citi Field. Glendon Rusch said he enjoys the high praise he gets nowadays from broadcasters and sportswriters because his games rarely went more than two hours when he pitched. Rusch’s fellow starter, Steve Trachsel, was at the other end of the time spectrum as he worked so deliberately he was referred to as the “human rain delay.” Trachsel would be considered Mr. Speedy these days. “All games seem to go four hours these days. I can’t stand it!” he said. 2001 Mets reserve infielder and pinch hitter de luxe Lenny Harris decried the lack of attention paid to moving base runners through productive outs these days, while outfielder Jay Payton complained about new stats which are meaningless. “The obsession with launch angles is hurting young batters learning how to hit the ball squarely. Does anyone really care about exit velocity of a foul ball?” The Mets’ cable home, SNY, did a great job with their documentary, “9/11: The Mets Remember,” as it nicely mixes in footage of that fateful day with the recollections of a number of players. Todd Zeile, who is now an SNY studio host on Mets pre and postgame shows, recalled the smell stench from lower Manhattan as the Mets bus was going over the George Washington Bridge which is roughly ten miles away from Ground Zero. Hall of Famer Mike Piazza graciously said, “If people just remember me for my home run against the Braves in the September 21st game against the Braves, then that’s fine with me.” The documentary also gives airtime to a pair of often overlooked Mets, Joe McEwing and Vance Wilson. My only criticism of “9/11: The Mets Remember” is letting Braves reliever Steve Karsay only talk about the pitch he threw to Mike Piazza. Karsay grew up in north-

ern Queens and it would have been interesting to get his recollections of what surely must have been mixed emotions. Jimmy Kimmel, the host of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” grew up a Mets fan in Brooklyn and his family’s move to Las Vegas when he was in elementary school did not alter his fandom. Before the game began, many members of the 2001 Mets stood interspersed with New York City first responders along the right and left field lines. By Lloyd Carroll to have a few unplanned moments to get reacquainted. I spoke to some of the 2001 Mets who were at Citi Field. Glendon Rusch said he enjoys the high praise he gets nowadays from broadcasters and sportswriters because his games rarely went more than two hours when he pitched. Rusch’s fellow starter, Steve Trachsel, was at the other end of the time spectrum as he worked so deliberately he was referred to as the “human rain delay.” Trachsel would be considered Mr. Speedy these days. “All games seem to go four hours these days. I can’t stand it!” he said. 2001 Mets reserve infielder and pinch hitter de luxe Lenny Harris decried the lack of attention paid to moving base runners through productive outs these days, while outfielder Jay Payton complained about new stats which are meaningless. “The obsession with launch angles is hurting young batters learning how to hit the ball squarely. Does anyone really care about exit velocity of a foul ball?” The Mets’ cable home, SNY, did a great job with their documentary, “9/11: The Mets Remember,” as it nicely mixes in footage of that fateful day with the recollections of a number of players. Todd Zeile, who is now an SNY studio host on Mets pre and postgame shows, recalled the smell stench from lower Manhattan as the Mets bus was going over the George Washington Bridge which is roughly ten miles away from Ground Zero. Hall of Famer Mike Piazza graciously said, “If people just remember me for my home run against the Braves in the September 21st game against the Braves, then that’s fine with me.” The documentary also gives airtime to a pair of often overlooked Mets, Joe McEwing and Vance Wilson. My only criticism of “9/11: The Mets Remember” is letting Braves reliever Steve Karsay only talk about the pitch he threw to Mike Piazza. Karsay grew up in north-

ern Queens and it would have been interesting to get his recollections of what surely must have been mixed emotions. Jimmy Kimmel, the host of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” grew up a Mets fan in Brooklyn and his family’s move to Las Vegas when he was in elementary school did not alter his fandom. Kimmel was 18 when the Mets won the 1986 World Series and it remains his favorite sports memory as it is for so many fans of the Amazin’s who were old enough to remember it. Kimmel’s labor of love, “Once Upon a Time in Queens,” debuted last month on ESPN, and is well worth catching on either demand on cable or on its streaming service, ESPN+. A big plus about “Once Upon a Time in Queens” is there is a lot of previously unseen footage. I had always heard about Bob Costas and his NBC Sports crew standing in the Boston Red Sox clubhouse in the tenth inning of Game 6 awaitMichael Kay ing their World Series celebration only to have to scurry when the Mets made their miraculous comeback. For the first time, we get to witness it. Costas, who has a new Photograph © E.H. Wallop monthly show on HBO, “Back on the Record with Bob Costas,” has long been regarded as one of television’s best interviewers, has written the forward to Michael Kay’s “CenterStage” (Scribner). Kay, best known for being the YES Network’s play-by-play voice for the Yankees, has proven to be a pretty good interviewer himself. “CenterStage” is a collection of the transcripts of Kay’s studio show where he gets to interview celebrities from all walks of life. tions of shows which featured guests like Paul Simon, Jon Bon Jovi, Lorne Michaels, Adam Sandler, Jay-Z, ARod, and so many others. At the annual CBS NFL media day ,CBS Sports CEO Sean McManus admitted he tries to “thread the needle” when it comes to gambling. He said CBS Sports will accept ads from Draft Kings, FanDuel, Points Bet, Caesars, and the like, but he doesn’t want his NFL broadcasts to mix in wagering talk because most of the sports-viewing audience are not gamblers. McManus also announced the popular Tuesday night roundup show, “Inside the NFL,” is moving from Showtime to ViacomCBS’s streaming service, Paramount Plus. Ray Lewis, Michael Irvin, and recently retired New England Patriots wide receiver Justin Edelman will be joining Phil Simms, James Brown, and Brandon Marshall on the panel. Germany’s Alexander Zverev, who lost in the men’s semi-finals to Novak Djokovic at the 2021 US Open, is a baseball fan. Before the Open started, he went across the street to Citi Field to watch the Mets take batting practice. Zverev made fast friends with Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor who was in attendance for Zverev’s Opening Day match at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

You would think that Joe Piket would want to take a rest after winning Piano Entertainer of the Year in the LI Press Best of Long Island 2021. A veteran to the Long Island Music scene, Joe keeps pushing the envelope, his latest effort being a new video. Joe and his wife Anna have been close friends with Blaize and George for more than fifteen years. Although they are all musicians, they had never played together until last summer. That soon changed as they jammed together every weekend for a year. Although Joe thinks of himself as a pianist, he soon got a chance to develop his guitar chops. He loved it and his power trio recorded a new song, The Four Chord Song. On a recent visit to their friends, Joe announced that they were going to be shooting a video, spur of the moment. Joe remembers, “ Somehow we got a lot of cool footage and some funny stuff too.” Their friend Rich Chiraz did a stellar job pulling the video together for them. The song and the video feature Joe on guitar and vocals, Blaize on bass and vocals, George on drums and vocals, and Anna on percussion and vocals. Joe says Anna stole the show! JAZZ & BLUES KIRK WHALUM ASKS, HOW DOES CHRISTMAS SOUND? When we think of Christmas, sometimes it’s the sights that come to mind: the multi-colored lights framing the windows of neighbors’ houses, the line of eager children waiting to sit on Santa’s lap, the Nativity scene on the lawn at the local church. Or maybe it’s the smells that arise first: fresh-baked gingerbread, pine needles, a turkey dinner in the oven. On his new album for Artistry Music/Mack Avenue Music Group, GRAMMY® Award-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum asks How Does Christmas Sound? On his second holiday-themed album, Whalum doesn’t answer that question in the expected way – revisiting the most familiar carols, the ones that have already worn out their welcome most years by the time Thanksgiving rolls around. Instead, he finds a more spiritual, introspective sound for Christmas, one that acknowledges the melancholy that often accompanies the Yuletide and the faith that is so central to his own celebrations. THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF LOUIS ARMSTRONG ALL STARS While New Orleans native Louis Armstrong passed away in 1971 at the age of 69, today his legacy as the kingpin of jazz continues to grow. The most significant example of this is the ensemble The Wonderful World of Louis Armstrong All Stars, comprised largely of top-of-the-line Crescent City musicians paying tribute to him with the brilliant album A Gift to Pops. The inventive re-envisioning of music associated with the trumpeter/vocalist during his five-decade career features new arrangements and new performances of stalwart tunes ranging from the “The Peanut Vendor” (recorded by him in 1930) to “What a Wonderful World” (recorded in 1968 and the most successful tune of his career). Special guests include Wynton Marsalis and Common. The band also features trumpeters Ashlin Parker and Wendell Brunious, tenor saxophonist Roderick Paulin, pianist Courtney Bryan, banjo player Don Vappie, vocalists Niki Haris and Menia Chester, and guitarist Derwin “Big D” Perkins in a special guest cameo on “Black and Blue.” SUE FOLEY’S PINKY’S BLUES Stony Plain Records announced an October 22 release date for Pinky’s Blues, the new album from award-winning blues guitarist/singer Sue Foley. Featuring several Sue Foley originals, as well as songs from some of her favorite blues and roots artists, Pinky’s Blues was recorded at Fire Station Studios in San Marcos, Texas. Joining Sue Foley (guitar, vocals) for the recording sessions were Jon Penner (bass), Chris “Whipper” Layton (drums) and Mike Flanigin (Hammond B3 organ), who also produced the album. The legendary Jimmie Vaughan joins in as a special guest on rhythm guitar for the track, “Hurricane Girl.” To support the release of her new disc, Foley will embark on an extensive tour. Foley also shot videos for three songs from the new album that were directed by Tim Hardiman, who directed the latest Black Keys video.

ON THE ROAD DEAD & COMPANY ADDS TWO RED ROCKS CONCERTS Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, John Mayer, and Bob Weir, with Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti – has added two concerts at the famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado to its 2021 tour. The shows – Tuesday, October 19, and Wednesday, October 20 – went on sale to the general public beginning Friday, September 24 @ Noon MDT through AXS. The Grateful Dead performed over 2,300 concerts during their decades-long career, but one of the band’s favorite venues was Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The band’s maiden run at Red Rocks was July 7-8, 1978, and they went on to play 20 epic shows there from 1978-1987. JORMA KAUKONEN’S MULTIDIMENSIONAL WORLD Jorma Kaukonen and John Hurlbut : The River Flows Volume 2 was introduced on vinyl on Record Store Day this past July, Culture Factory released John Hurlbut and Jorma Kaukonen: The River Flows Volume Two (CFU-01200) in all formats September 24th. The Numbers of Food Insecure Begin to Decline After 18-months of responding to the increase in need for emergency food assistance brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, loss of jobs and underemployment, Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank and its 329 member agencies are seeing a decline in the number of Long Islanders struggling with food insecurity. Between March of 2020 and 2021, Long Island Cares provided food assistance to an additional 287,481 people struggling to put food on their tables and feed their families. These numbers were in addition to the 259,000 people already known to the Long Island Cares hunger network and represent a 54.8% increase in need throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties. During the first year of COVID-19, The Harry Chapin Food Bank delivered 18,957,519 pounds of food to individuals and their member agencies.

NEW DAR WILLIAMS ALBUM When Dar Williams starts discussing her latest album, I’ll Meet You Here, she’s not yet sure she can identify its through line; a thread that might connect its 10 songs together. But as she delves into the collection, released Oct. 1 on BMG’s recently launched Renew label, she mentions her attempt to turn her yard into a meadow. Unfortunately, the wildflower seeds she scattered on the grass around her home, in New York’s Hudson Valley, didn’t take. Now she just has an unruly lawn. Like everyone else, Williams spent 2020 in that state of non-control. She and longtime producer Stewart Lerman tracked most of the album, her 12th studio recording, in November of 2019. In late February of 2020, she cut the title tune in Woodstock with bassist Gail Ann Dorsey and Larry Campbell, who produced the track and played guitars, pedal steel and twangy baritone guitar.

TONY BENNETT When MTV was still a thing, and the epicenter of youth culture, the last person anyone ever expected to see on the channel was 1950’s/60’s crooner and nightclub mainstay Tony Bennett, yet there he was with a special of his own, and then hanging with Stevie Wonder, and touring as a co star with rock bands. He always kept his hands in the ‘now’, and this proved through more recently when he joined forces with Lady GaGa years ago, at the height of her teen pop stardom; they recently teamed up again for a live show. Now, at the age of 95 years old, Tony Bennett has decided to call it a day and retire, as he has canceled the remaining dates on his most recent tour. Health issues and the fact that he suffers from Alzheimer’s are obvious factors in this decision for this longest lasting ‘pop star’ of all time to ‘call it a day’. In more recent times, the ‘performing life’ of recording artists seem to grow shorter and shorter. One of Tony’s long time friends, (and Rhythm Tracking fave) Diana Ross is one of the few still keeping on as they say, as she prepares to embark on a world wide tour that had been delayed by Covid, and a new studio album to promote at her upcoming shows. COLIN BLUNSTONE’S ONE YEAR 50TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION

Originally released in November 1971, One Year is the debut solo album from The Zombies’ frontman Colin Blunstone, recorded over the course of “one year” following the band’s break-up and the posthumous success of their single “Time of the Season.” To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the landmark album, Sundazed Music will release a double LP edition on November 5. The second LP, That Same Year, features Colin singing his own compositions, many accompanied solely by his acoustic guitar, and gives a deeper introspective look into that time in his life. The double LP is now available for pre-order. Coinciding with the anniversary release, Colin will join forces with composer Joe Wong (Russian Doll, The Midnight Gospel, Master of None) to recreate One Year live on stage in its entirety for the first time, with exclusive shows at Los Angeles’ Regent Theater (November 2) and New York City’s Gramercy Theatre (November 8).

TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA RETURNS TO THE ROAD

COLDPLAY’S “AMSTERDAM SESSIONS”

Coldplay’s ‘Amsterdam Sessions’, a rarely seen and intimate 2000 performance in support of the band’s breakout critically acclaimed album Parachutes, is now available to stream for the first time ever exclusively on The Coda Collection. Taped in summer 2000 on the eve of the record’s release, the performance captures a pivotal moment in the band’s early career just prior to their meteoric ascent to global stardom. ALLMAN FAMILY REVIVAL 18-CITY TOUR

Devon Allman announced the fifth annual Allman Family Revival, a celebration of the life, spirit, and music of Gregg Allman, hosted by his son, Blues Music Award-winning Devon Allman and anchored by his group, The Allman Betts Band. On what would have been Gregg Allman’s 70th birthday (December 8, 2017), Devon decided to gather his talented friends to pay homage musically. Musicians that had toured with Gregg, jammed with Gregg & inspired by Gregg turned up to throw down. Legends like Robin Zander of Cheap Trick, wunderkind Marcus King, and the Orbison’s, all took part in the inaugural performance, laying the groundwork for The Allman Family Revival to be an annual who’s who of musical talent. Now…It’s a yearly tradition, and it’s grown from an annual celebration in San Fransisco to a full fledged coast to coast tour. Based on the format of “The Last Waltz” concert with The Allman Betts Band as the house band and featuring up to a dozen marquee names in music, it’s an epic 3 hour show unlike any other.
