Project Grand Slam (PGS), the brainchild of acclaimed bassist/ composer Robert Miller, is a hot unit in the jazz world – and they’re coming to Long Island for a headlining date on February 21 at 8 pm at My Father’s Place at The Roslyn Hotel. Solidly accomplished, Project Grand Slam is a jazz/rock/Latin fusion band with a self-described “New York City groove.” The band’s newest album, PGS 7 (released in June 2019, pictured here) is the group’s seventh studio album, and features 12 new songs written and arranged by Miller that continue the musical diversity that PGS is known for. Adding to his musical signature of taking classic rock songs from the 1960s and “reimagining” them in the Project Grand Slam style, PGS 7 includes Miller’s unique take on Dobie Gray’s 1960s song “The ‘In’ Crowd.”

Originally formed in 2007 and re-formed by Miller in 2015, the band consists of Miller leading a group of young musicians from around the world including Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Mexico, Canada, Brazil and Cuba. In its history, PGS has had a #1 Billboard album (2018’s “Trippin’”), scored more than three million video views, and has been featured in an episode of the NBC series, “Lipstick Jungle” featuring Brooke Shields.

Project Grand Slam has wowed audiences from jazz to rock, from millennials to baby boomers, at festivals, performing arts centers, and other major venues, in the U.S. and around the world.

It has headlined and performed alongside a number of major artists, including Blues Traveler, Edgar Winter, Yes, Boney James, and Mindi Abair, and by doing so has cultivated a worldwide fan base.

Miller writes and arranges all of the band’s material, including vocal and instrumental originals. One of his musical signatures is to take classic rock hits and “reimagine” them in Project Grand Slam’s unique style. In the past, the group has ushered in its own versions of Jimi Hendrix’ “Fire,” The Kinks’ “You Really Got Me,” Cream’s “I’m So Glad,” The Who’s “I Can’t Explain,” and Phish’s “Free.”

SPORTS BEAT Eli Manning made the right decision to retire from pro football after 16 years with The New York Giants, though it couldn't have been an easy one. The quarterback still wanted to play, and still has the ability – the problem is that Manning wants to be a starter and not an emergency backup, and at age 39 it isn’t realistic. He could have waited until the beginning of the 2020 NFL season for the inevitable injury occurring to a starting QB, but he figured that it wouldn’t be worth uprooting his family for at that point.

New York Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson is now a free agent and has stated that he wants to be compensated as if he were Eli the top receiver in the NFL. Manning The Jets have not made the playoffs during Anderson’s tenure, and while he has hauled in a few long passes, his impact has not matched the attention he has gotten from the local sports media.

Double Your Pleasure: It's a rarity for TV: Members of the Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA) and Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) will team for a mixed doubles event at 2020 International Bowl Expo at The Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center in Denver in July. The PWBA/PBA Mixed Doubles will be televised live on Sunday, July 5 at 8 pm on FS1.

The New York Mets had little choice but to name Luis Rojas as their manager in light of the Carlos Beltran debacle. Rojas had been a coach and a manager in the Mets farm system for 13 years and worked with the majority of the players on the team’s current roster, most of whom had high praise for him. Economics certainly played a role in the decision to hire Rojas; the Mets are paying for the remaining year on deposed manager Mickey Callaway’s contract.

There was no way that the Mets were going to invest in a veteran manager given those sunk costs.

Baseball needs more diversity in the managerial and executive ranks, and Rojas, from the Dominican Republic, helps in that regard.

Rojas is 38 and is going to make his share of mistakes,

especially when it comes to dealing with the New York media. Hopefully, everyone will give him more leeway than they gave Callaway, another first-time manager.

saying that the Senate should subpoena The Baseball Hall of Fame to discover the name of the one writer who left Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter off of his ballot.

At his Hall of Fame press conference, Jeter did not seem too perturbed at not being a unanimous selection the way his teammate Mariano Rivera was last year, as he

expressed gratitude for the number of votes he did receive. He also addressed the issue of the declining percentage of AfricanAmerican players in the majors by saying that it could be a generational thing. He pointed out that college football and basketball stars get to the NFL and NBA respectively as soon as they leave school, while it doesn’t work that way for college baseball stars, who still have to apprentice in the minor leagues most of the time.

Jeter is currently a minority owner with The Miami Marlins. As he was leaving the Hall of Fame press conference, I told him that Marlins Park desperately needs mass transit. “Make it happen!” he replied.

Petco One reason that the Marlins’ Park attendance is poor is that the only way to get there is by car (the parking charge is $20) or Uber.

The Miami area’s leading industry is tourism, and the lack of a bus or train option to get to Marlins Park prevents many fans from attending games. It’s a shame, because Marlins Park is a beautiful place to watch a game, and the concession stand prices are reasonable

I asked Padres third baseman Manny Machado, who received a $300 million, 10-year contract last year about new Yankees ace pitcher, Gerrit Cole, whose contract dwarfed his: “I am thrilled for him and any player that can get their fair compensation,” he said. Padres veteran pitcher Drew Pomeranz about Cole: “He thrives under the spotlight.” That’s obviously good news for New York fans.

Aye Aye, Captain: Pabst undoubtedly has much more of a vaunted history that simply being the favorite canned beer in the current college scene.

Here’s the scoop: Pioneered by Captain Frederick Pabst, Pabst Brewing Company has been brewing beer since the late 1800s.

One hundred and seventy-five years later, the Captain’s vision transformed a small-scale brewery into one of the nation’s largest – and now the Pabst company has unveiled a new luxury beer brand, Captain Pabst, and launches its flagship IPA, called Seabird.

HOF Omissions: We delivered our congratulations last time for the long overdue induction of Marc Bolan & T.Rex into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Everyone has their own opinions, but not everyone has their own column to express their distress over those still standing in the shadows. As I do have a forum, I will revisit my remaining grievances, starting with The Marvelettes, who if for no other reason, gave Motown its first national #1 pop chart/Billboard hit, "Please Mr.Postman," which was a historic milestone more than 50 years ago; Mott The Hoople, whose body of work in the 1970s, highlighted by the anthem "All The Young Dudes," holds a bright shining space in the rock timeline; Slade, whose early ’70s influence worldwide continues to be felt (decades later, Quiet Riot made a career of covering Slade songs that should have had their day in court in America); and the 1960s girl group The Shangri-Las, who scored a early breakthrough for women by coming on tough and brassy while maintaining their femininity Billie without effort.

Grammys & Pop: This year, The Grammy Awards got off to an interesting start: The head of the organization was dismissed from her post over reported charges of allegedly tampering with the votes, allegedly altering the nominees in some categories, and other infractions that were considered damaging to the event itself.

Things were further mired in mud when she reportedly accused Grammy officials of sexual harassment, leading to Taylor Swift stepping out of an appearance on the show. There was no problem with the other female artists, who continue to dominate the pop music world as they have in the past decade; Billie Eilish, who we raved about when her album was released, swept all the major awards – Best Song, Best Album, best everything.

There were dynamic performances throughout the night, my favorite being Usher's tribute to Prince. I had forgotten how incredibly talented Usher is, and this was a great reminder. Despite all the drama, this Grammy presentation was the best I've seen in years, so thumbs up to all concerned.

Iggy's A Biggie: The big surprise of the Grammy event was Iggy Pop receiving a "Lifetime Achievement Award," something we never expected the stuffed shirts at the Grammys board to even consider, let alone actually deliver. Iggy has been the central transforming figure in the rock & roll timeline, Iggy from 1969 to the present day, Pop leading the cycle of glam into punk into alternative into hardcore and beyond. Congratulations to Iggy, and thumbs up to the Grammy folks who made a smart and timely decision with this one.

Carie's Incredible: Congratulations to one of the hottest area-based comedians at present, Carie Karavas, who recently saw her new comedy special, “Men, Flaws, & Menopause,” debut on Sony's Crackle over-thetop streaming network.

Karavas has been taking both the New York City and Long Island comedy club scenes by storm during the past couple of years, thanks primarily to her her hardhitting style of delivery and world-weary demeanor. One of the most popular rock bands of the 1980s, Foreigner recently announced a major summer tour – with both Kansas and Europe also on the bill – dubbed the “Juke Box Heroes” tour.
