“I laughed so hard… …tears rolled down my thighs.” “I had years and years of urinary incontinence, even as a youngster. I had bronchitis and asthma, so bad that I would cough so hard that I would lose control and just urinate, and as you get older, you know, things get worse. So when I read about Dr. Meena’s protocol, I think what she does for people’s sex lives is amazing, but what she’s done for my life is amazing in terms of not wetting my pants. Immediately, I noticed a difference. So, thank you very much. ” ~Jennifer G. Pelvic floor weakness is the most common cause of urine leakage and experiencing a frequent need to pee. It’s two times more common in women than in men due to pregnancy and trauma to the pelvic floor during childbirth. Menopausal women (even if they didn’t give vaginal birth) lose tone of pelvic floor muscles due to imbalance of hormones, which can cause incontinence.

Dr. Meena, MD

A pill is not an answer to all ills, and surgery doesn’t cure all problems. We are fortunate to live in times when we can adapt the best practices from Western and Eastern medicine, and this is one area where Western medicine has provided a great solution. When Emsella is integrated with optimization of hormones and lean versus fat mass in the body, results are awesome!

Treatments for urinary incontinence: Behavioral techniques: scheduled bathroom times and cut down fluids. Strengthening Pelvic Floor Muscle: Kegel exercises. Emsella: This state of the art technology utilizes High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to stimulate deep pelvic floor muscles and restore neuromuscular control. A single Emsella session of 28 minutes is equivalent to 11,200 Kegel exercises. Hormones: Vaginal estrogen can be used as an adjunct to Emsella. Medications: Common side effects include constipation, urinary retention, dry mouth, blurred vision and cognitive impairment. Surgeries: Invasive

Publisher’s Letter

I

n times past, the cold and dark winter months were, for many, a period to rest and recharge before the tasks of a new spring. Before light was as basic as the flip of a switch and digital technology permeated our lives 24/7, seasonal darkness and cold slowed activities similarly to that of the rest of the natural world. Of course, our modern reality is a stark contrast to the past, and it can be challenging to embrace and savor the winter season, as life’s pace continues at the same speed year-round. Still, with a mindful eye, there are many ways that we can recharge and prepare for the coming year in the quiet of January and myriad opportunities to sow the seeds (literally and figuratively) for the coming months.

Peggy Malecki

Although it’s officially winter, due to our mild Chicago autumn, the soil has not yet frozen, and some of us may still have a few bulbs remaining to finally plant in anticipation of spring blooms. January is also an ideal time to plan for the coming growing season, read through seed catalogs and websites, take a gardening course, check out a new book about pollinator plants and dream of the coming tomato season. If you’ve been looking to attract more butterflies and beneficial insects to your garden and also create a backyard habitat for birds, now is the time to get started. Many Midwest native plant seeds require a period of cold, moist rest, called stratification, to germinate reliably. This is a good time to order seeds and start the planting prep, imitating the seeds’ natural process by storing them in your fridge (many require a 60- to 90-day prep before planting) or stratifying outdoors in milk jugs or by other means. The process is a little more detailed than this; you’ll find information is plentiful on websites, YouTube and Facebook Midwest seed-starting groups. January also marks the start of the 30th anniversary of Natural Awakenings (we’re in our 14th year publishing here at Natural Awakenings Chicago), and I’m proud to share this celebration with you. Since 1994, Natural Awakenings has helped educate, inform, empower and connect millions of readers across the country to the latest trends in holistic and integrative wellness, healthy eating, sustainability and conscious living. Whether you are looking for inspiration to build new habits, want to try a healthier version of your favorite recipes or eat more seasonally, are curious about a new wellness modality, desire to become more connected to our natural world or are seeking a community of like-minded people and thought leaders, our magazine may be your ideal resource. As always in my letter, I encourage you to step outside each and every day. Watch the sun’s light slowly return and the days lengthen as we move through the month. Check the weather, bundle up and head out for a walk or run on a nearby trail. Watch the skies for the occasional movements of sandhill cranes or a lone hawk riding the breezes. Listen for an owl on a cold winter’s night or revel in the warmth of a sunny day in an El Niño winter. Ponder the wonder of snowflakes and watch for the full moon rise later this month. On behalf of our team at Natural Awakenings, we wish you a bright, beautiful, healthy and inspired 2024.

Happy New Year!

Environmental irritants also affect digestion.

Reneé Barasch, Certified Digestive Health and Detoxification Specialist, has been helping clients achieve nutritional balance and enhance quality of life for more than 17 years. Reneé’s individualized plans help clients re-boot their digestive tracts and increase absorption of needed nutrients—creating the environment for detoxification of all organs and the pathways between them.

The environment can also produce irritation and inflammation. Everyday, airborne toxins — perfumes, cleaning products, smoke, automotive exhaust, indoor dust, and springtime pollen— find their way into our bloodstream (in less than 20 seconds!) and cause digestive organs to work overtime. T

he McHenry County Conservation Foundation (MCCF)—with the help of an Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation grant and donations from MCCF supporters—recently purchased 40 acres of land adjacent to a 120-acre site formerly known as Camp Lakota, which MCCF purchased in 2021. Combined, the two parcels total 160 acres of contiguous natural area that will be permanently protected for the benefit of all county residents. This important acquisition contains 14.15 acres of wetland and is part of a larger wetland complex that was preserved when MCCF made the earlier purchase. These wetlands, several of which are on the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ Illinois Natural Areas Inventory and recognized by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as Advanced Identification wetlands, serve as an important recharge area for McHenry County’s groundwater

resources. They also support diverse natural communities, which in turn support rare and threatened fauna including endangered or threatened birds such as least bittern, common gallinule and yellow-headed blackbird. In order to guarantee the permanent preservation of this land, all 160 acres will be transferred to the McHenry County Conservation District for long-term stewardship and management by summer 2026. This transfer ensures these acres become public lands that are protected in perpetuity to benefit both today’s residents and future generations. In the meantime, the Conservation District and MCCF will work together to restore the area, which will increase flood storage capacity of the headwater reaches of both the Nippersink Creek and the Kishwaukee River watersheds. Health Brief STUDY FINDS DIET ASSOCIATED WITH ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

by Rishard Lekkas, ND, and Jerry Garcia, PA-C

In a recent study on the association of diet with erectile dysfunction (ED), it was found that erectile difficulty is an early sign of cardiovascular disease and may decrease quality of life in men. The study—published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2020—suggested that adopting a healthy dietary Jerry Garcia, PA-C, EMAA pattern might lower the risk of and Rishard Lekkas, ND experiencing ED, potentially motivating men to make healthier food choices. More than 21,000 U.S. males between the ages of 40 to 75 years old were involved in the study, which ran from 1998 to 2014, with the analysis of data completed in 2020. Notably, the research indicated that adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with the lowest relative risk of incident ED among the participants. Additionally, the study found that men younger than 60 that followed a healthy dietary pattern had a reduced risk of experiencing ED. The conclusion and relevance drawn from this cohort study underscore the importance of maintaining a healthy diet in reducing the risk of ED. This research provides valuable insights into the potential benefits of dietary modifications in mitigating the risk of this condition, particularly among younger men. It’s important to note that while this study sheds light on the association between diet and ED, individual health circumstances can vary. Consulting with healthcare professionals for personalized advice regarding dietary choices and overall health is advisable for individuals concerned about this issue. OsteoStrong Brings Osteogenic Loading Technology to Chicagoland by Sheila Julson

W

hen entrepreneur Marc Malizia learned about OsteoStrong, a nationwide franchise that uses robotic musculoskeletal treatment devices to help its members build bone and muscular strength, he became curious and joined as a member. He was immediately impressed by OsteoStrong’s unique approach toward strengthening bones, as well as the ambiance of the facility. “It’s a happy place, where like-minded people interested in alternative approaches gather to improve their lifestyles,” Malizia recalls. “It has a positive impact on people’s lives, and I wanted to be part of it.” Malizia approached OsteoStrong Schaumburg owner Lyndon Sumlin about the possibility of becoming an OsteoStrong franchisee. Today, Malizia and Sumlin, along with a third business partner, Jason Stewart, own OsteoStrong offices in Schaumburg and Wilmette—the only two OsteoStrong locations in Illinois. The OsteoStrong franchise was launched in 2011 by entrepreneur Kyle Zagrodzky and biomedical engineer Dr. John Jaquish. The OsteoStrong concept is based on the Wolff ’s Law principle taught in medical school, Malizia explains, which states that force placed upon the bones will trigger osteogenesis in the body and promote the natural rebuilding of bones through osteoblasts, the cells that build and heal bones. OsteoStrong’s osteogenic loading technology uses force to stimulate new bone growth and improve muscle density and balance. 14

Chicago

NA Chicago.com

Each center has four machines that resemble gym equipment, but the machines don’t move— the user pushes against the machines’ force. “It puts the load on you, and you put the load on it,” Malizia says. “The members can push up to 4.2 times their body weight, and that force compresses the bone for a short period of time to achieve osteogenesis.” Malizia adds that the machines are designed in a way that users start the exercises at 120 degree angles, the body’s strongest position, and users can gradually increase their loads. A certified OsteoStrong coach is present during the entire session to guide and supervise each member during use. Potential members can request a phone consult to see if OsteoStrong is a good fit for them. If a person is qualified and interested, they will receive one free incenter introduction appointment to learn about the machines and modalities. Upon joining, members can come in for osteogenic loading as frequently as once per week; Malizia notes that it takes about five days for bones to rebuild. While exercises such as running, walking, swimming and weight lifting are beneficial, they do not effectively build bone. Malizia says that gymnasts have been shown to have the greatest bone density, due to their forceful landings on mats. OsteoStrong’s technology allows users to emulate comparable levels of force, but without the risk of injury.

COMPLEMENTARY MODALITIES TO SUPPORT OVERALL HEALTH

OsteoStrong’s Illinois locations also feature complementary modalities such as a BioCharger NG, a noninvasive device that Malizia says restores electrical cell frequency, and compression boots, which he says compress and massage the legs to stimulate blood flow and aid the removal of metabolic waste. Exclusive to OsteoStrong’s two Chicago area locations is the Echolight bone density scan device, which Malizia says provides for cutting-edge technology bone health assessments. “In Europe, Echolight is replacing bone mineral density (DEXA) scans as the de facto standard of bone scans,” Malizia says. Echolight uses ultrasound technology and is radiation-free. A trained Echolight technician uses an ultrasound wand to scan the lumbar vertebrae and proximal femur while the patient lies flat on an exam table. The test takes less than 15 minutes, and Echolight generates a report that includes bone mass density, along with T-scores and Z-scores. Malizia will also add red light therapy to their OsteoStrong locations. This year, they plan to participate in community events and health fairs. “Many of our members have been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia,” he says. “But bone health programs can help people be proactive and prevent or lessen the damage. Athletes can also achieve a better workout after using OsteoStrong.” OsteoStrong Wilmette is located at 126 Skokie Blvd., Wilmette. genres, including jazz, blues, gospel, folk and even rock ‘n’ roll. “We tailor the sessions to the individual and offer music they know and grew up with. For many in this generation, that includes artists like Hank Williams, Patsy Cline and Steve Goodman. Nearly everyone remembers This Land is Your Land, This Little Light of Mine and Take Me Out to the Ball Game, whether they sang them at school, home or religious institution. Even clients that have been nonverbal are often able to tap along with the rhythm or even sing a few words. We almost always end with the Tin Pan Alley classic Side by Side, which often elicits warm smiles and even triumphant outbursts,” Plotkin muses.

Life Rhythms Fosters Memory and Connection by Carrie Jackson

Music is undeniably one of the most effective ways for people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias to engage. A study published by the National Institutes of Health suggests that musical memories are preserved even after other areas in the brain begin to deteriorate. “Research shows that the brain’s musical pathways remain intact much longer than other areas of the brain, even after speech and short-term memory fade. Drumming circles and other rhythm-based activities help tap into the long-term memory storage and can reduce the sense of isolation many Alzheimer’s and dementia patients must feel as their verbal communication skills decline. Music is literally the medicine that cannot be bottled or sold,” says Plotkin. While Plotkin has operated group programs in assisted living facilities and with organizations such as Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, he is currently focusing on in-home sessions for a more personal experience. “Fostering drum circles in the home brings a nurturing and uplifting energy to the whole space. haring music is a natural part of the human experience that dates back to prehistoric times. Songs and rhythms have the innate ability to provoke strong emotions and are the foundations for many of our early memories, from joyous celebrations to solemn memorials. Highland Park-based Life Rhythms combines music, drumming and other sensory-stimulating activities to foster the creative spirit in seniors and people living with cognitive impairment. are generally more comfortable in their own surroundings and can more easily tap into memories that already exist in that place. We invite family members and loved ones to participate, and it truly brings everyone together at a time when clients and caregivers can feel isolated. They are creating an experience together that they can go back to anytime,” he explains. Plotkin provides the instruments, including tambourines, shakers and a variety of drums. Clients are engaged with call-andresponse activities, hands-on prompts and other sensory-stimulating cues. He begins most sessions with introductory singalong exercises on the guitar, encouraging participants to sing, tap, clap or hum along. “We meet participants exactly where they are at every session. Some days an otherwise nonverbal client will begin singing; other days they’re able to open their eyes a little brighter. No matter the external response, we can see that a change is happening within,” he notes. Participants don’t need to have any special music background to benefit from the interactive sessions. Plotkin draws from an extensive knowledge of music styles and

Contributing to a drum circle or other music program can also provide seniors with a sense of purpose, something that is lost for many with cognitive decline. “Participants are able to see their children and grandchildren light up in response to the activities. They feel that they are still providing wellness and fulfillment and are helping to create memories that will last a lifetime. The music allows them to reconnect with loved ones on a primal level that does not require the use of words,” Plotkin says. Life Rhythms’ goal is to lay the foundation for the participants and families to continue with drumming and music on their own. Plotkin suggests three to four sessions to begin, and offers the first one free as an introduction. “Once they learn the basics of the exercises, it’s something families can come back to at any time. Whether they create a regular music ensemble in their home or occasionally clap along to songs they know, they are fostering valuable connection and stimulation. We all have an innate rhythm that we move to, and drumming allows us to literally tap into our own unique vibrations and share that with others, at any stage of life,” notes Plotkin. VANISHING BANANAS

Every year, more than 100 billion bananas are consumed worldwide, 47 percent of which is the classic yellow Cavendish cultivar. According to a recent report in ScienceAlert, a strain of the Fusarium fungus known as Tropical Race 4 (TR4) is causing an outbreak of a wilting disease commonly referred to as Panama disease, which threatens to eradicate this popular varietal. First discovered in Australia in 1997, TR4 has spread worldwide. The infection begins in the tree’s roots and ultimately disables its ability to absorb water or conduct photosynthesis. Because of its slow progression, experts believe the disease will take about a decade to completely wipe out Cavendish bananas. Although there is no simple solution to TR4, scientists are exploring several options, such as genetically modifying the fruit to be more resistant to TR4, grafting Cavendish onto other trees to make them more resistant, and evolving Cavendish seedlings by exposing them to TR4 and selecting those that fare best. These may turn out to be shortterm approaches, however, as the fungi could mutate.

Somnuk/ Canva Pro

The best solution may be for farmers to stop growing only one variety of banana. By increasing the genetic diversity of the world’s favorite fruit, bananas may become less susceptible to diseases. On the other hand, introducing a wider variety of bananas could drive up costs and would require an overhaul of ripening and transportation practices.

healing over to the patient, and we have the core knowledge of what to do inside of us.”

Living Longer, Healthier and More Fulfilled

McGarey is a firm believer that forgiveness is essential to freeing up stuck energy. Life has to move, she says, and letting go of feelings that may be lingering in our subconscious allows us to move forward with grace. “If we hang on to the dark places in our lives, we will get stuck. Pay attention to your dreams, both during the day and night, because they hold the truth. We all came here for a reason and have our life’s purpose. If you find that, you will always be fulfilled and can embrace the aging process instead of fighting it,” she says.

eople are living longer, and as we age, we increasingly become aware of a desire to remain healthy, vibrant and active for as long as possible. It’s about extending our health span as much as our lifespan. While genetics play a role in how we experience the aging process, advancements in science are helping us understand that how we manage our mindset, physical activity, stress levels and diet can have just as much of an impact. By redefining what it means to get older and finding deeper meaning, we can embrace aging with grace and gratitude, rather than resist it. Many factors are within our control, and it is possible to live a fulfilling and vibrant life well into our twilight years. At nearly 103 years young, Dr. Gladys McGarey wrote the book on graceful aging. As the author of The Well-Lived Life: A 102-Year-Old Doctor's Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age, she suggests that we reframe aging as an opportunity rather than a loss, thereby pioneering a new 18

way of thinking about disease and health. “At 102, I’m losing my eyesight, but my insight has improved,” says the cofounder of the American Holistic Medical Association. “I have trouble reading but can listen to audiobooks and have deep conversations with people. If we look for illness and pain at the end of life, that’s what our bodies will show us. But if we reach for health, joy, laughter and other realities of true humanity, that’s what we will find.” McGarey asserts that our medical community is trained to eliminate pain and illness rather than learn from their messages. “If we can lean into what understanding a disease shows us, we can discover true wisdom,” she explains. “You can hold onto the pain, or you can hold onto what you learn from the pain. When my son was training to be an orthopedic surgeon, he confided that he was afraid to have people’s lives in his hands. I responded that if he thinks he’s the one who does the healing, he has a right to be scared. Doctors provide the technology to turn the

Renowned alternative medicine advocate Deepak Chopra, M.D., is an author, speaker and founder of the Chopra Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to research on well-being and humanitarianism. His latest book, Quantum Body: The New Science for Living a Longer, Healthier, More Vital Life, outlines how we can harness the power of the quantum body to significantly improve our physical and mental wellness, leading to a more fulfilling aging process. According to Chopra, our well-being depends entirely on the quantum field, which exists on a subatomic level and is the infinite source of everyday reality that affects our thoughts, feelings, sensations and biological responses. “Your quantum body is the central hub for every process that requires intelligence, just as a power plant is the central hub for everything that requires electricity. The prospect of having your quantum body fail you is far more serious than any single symptom of disease and aging. Well-being is weakened whenever there is a failure of intelligence and is strengthened when intelligence flows naturally,” he explains. Disease and aging are further downstream in the intelligence flow, Chopra notes, and when someone succumbs to a heart attack or cancer, intelligence has failed in either the cardiovascular system or a single malignant

One vital aspect of healthy aging that we can control is our approach to stress management, which Chopra says most people don’t take seriously enough. Stress can come from myriad sources, including family and social relationships; workplace stresses; a poor-quality diet; deficient sleeping habits; lack of exercise and downtime; and constant distractions from texting, video games and around-the-clock news reports. That is why it is more important than ever to develop tools for self-care. “The frenetic pace of modern life has overwhelmed the autonomic nervous system, which is responsible for all the processes, from heartbeat to respiration and digestion, that run independently of your conscious actions,” Chopra advises. “Medical research validates how essential stress management is, but what needs to change are socially ingrained attitudes that persuade us to tolerate stress beyond what our bodies and psyches are designed for.” Chopra encourages prioritizing deep sleep, tuning into breath and awareness, and mindful exercises to return to our zero point—a state of rest from which activity springs. “Your awareness experiences the zero point as silent, calm, alert and pregnant with boundless possibilities, where you have access to your next thought,” he explains. Embracing instead of resisting our quantum body further helps the energy flow. “The most natural way to live is in your dharma, or your truth,” Chopra says. “The greatest gift of self-awareness is that you can prove this to yourself every day by living with love, truth, beauty and bliss as your goal. Ultimate

well-being requires no less, and living from your source reveals that the infinite is personal and within reach. Physical well-being exists if you are able to live a long life in good health; mental well-being exists if you retain clear, sharp thinking; psychological well-being exists if you are free of anxiety and depression; and spiritual well-being exists if your life has higher purpose and meaning.” With more than 40 years of experience as a functional medicine doctor, Tom O’Bryan, DC, DACBN, CIFM, is an internationally recognized speaker and writer on chronic disease and metabolic disorders. He defines graceful aging as a state of full body function, without limitations and with rational expectations for what the body can do. O’Bryan points to the so-called Blue Zones, with an extraordinarily high percentage of people living into their 90s and above, as examples of those gracefully aging. “The lifestyle of people living in these areas includes daily rituals that reduce stress and reverse the inflammation associated with stress. As a result, they are able to live long, fruitful, happy lives as contributing and engaged members of society,” he notes. O’Bryan believes that the greatest contribution to living a vital life is identifying and reducing the triggers of inflammation in our bodies, which can largely be accomplished with lifestyle modifications. “According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 14 of the top 15 causes of death are related to chronic inflammatory diseases. Many people address inflammation with medication, but they don’t realize that food is the best medicine,” he explains. “With diet being the largest source of inflammation activation in the body, it’s important to question what’s on the end of our fork and nourish the body with an anti-inflammatory diet, including berries, leafy greens, garlic, curcumin and plenty of pure water. Your body always wants to be healthier, and if we identify and reduce our exposure to the triggers of inflammation, the inflammation calms down.”

Be sure to let our Advertisers know you found them in

Reducing inflammation also allows the central nervous system to settle into restand-digest mode, which can help the body age more gracefully. “Inflammation is the immune system’s response to harmful stimuli,” O’Bryan says. “An activated immune system is a life-saving, non-negotiable state that sets our sympathetic nervous system into fight-or-flight mode. When we are stressed or fighting for our lives, our heart rate is fast; our breathing is short, sharp and shallow; and our muscles are tight and ready for action. When inflammation decreases, our bodies are able to calm down and activate the parasympathetic nervous system. In that very relaxed state, your heart rate is slow; your breath is deep; your muscles are relaxed; and your brain is open, expansive and daydreaming of new possibilities in life. That’s when healing and regeneration occurs.” Carrie Jackson is a Chicago-based freelance writer. Connect at CarrieJacksonWrites.com.

cell. “Instead of being anxious about cells, tissues, organs and systems, which aren’t under your control, you can live from the source where all controls are overseen by your quantum body. Here, all information is perfect, the flow of intelligence is never wrong or distorted, and the creative possibilities for the future are boundless,” Chopra contends.

Wise Words

The Wisdom of the Inner Shaman with Billie Topa Tate’ by Carrie Jackson

How do we apply sacred balance in resolving stressful situations?

Sacred balance is finding harmony within and applying indigenous knowledge to connect with empowering aspects in our life. It starts with respecting Mother Earth and resetting our breath and nervous system to the natural flow of nature. When we disengage from nature, we can become unsettled and anxious. Connecting with the clouds, trees, water, wind and other elements around us helps ground us and allows our bodies to respond, instead of react, to everyday stressors. 20

he new year brings time for reflection and an opportunity to experience and utilize the elements of sacred balance for our upcoming season. Billie Topa Tate´, of the Mescalero Apache tribe, is founder of MSI Wellness Center, in Evanston, and author of the new book Spirit Guide Invocations: Seeking Wisdom and Support from Sacred Helpers. She is an eighth-degree reiki master teacher, a mentor, teacher and healer and is dedicated to creating a sacred space one person at a time through her indigenous native teachings. Topa Tate´ draws upon ancient native wisdom learned from her elders and helps clients tap into their inner shaman. “Applying the aspects of the shaman to our everyday activities can feel empowering and refreshing for the soul. Using our inner tools to create a sacred balance helps optimize insights, intuition and action for the coming year,” she explains.

and can manifest the qualities we want to flow around us. A five-to-10-minute sunrise ceremony ritual is a grounding and nourishing way to center our days and start refreshed. We begin by closing the eyes, placing hands on the center of the heart and turning the focus to unconditional love for ourselves. Then we invoke our angels, ancestors and other spiritual beings for guidance and protection, as well as assistance with projects and goals we are currently working on. This could be related to relationships, work, finances, health or anything else that is speaking to us right now. Finally, we ask for energy around us to be transformed into safety at all levels and manifested with wisdom, compassion and other qualities we aspire to. When we interact with the world on an energetic level, we feel the support of the universe.

Billie Topa Tate´

Too often when we experience stress, we turn to coping mechanisms that don’t work. Instead of seeing stress as a closed door, the shaman sees it as an opportunity. Calling on the experiences of our ancestors and all who have come before us allows us to access our inner wisdom and intuition and know that we have everything we need to find peace. You don’t have to wait until there is an emergency to call for help.

What daily practices of the shaman can we incorporate into our lives? Our inner shaman realizes that we have sovereignty over our space and energy fields

How does the busy mystic incorporate these practices?

The hectic pace of today’s world can make it challenging to slow down, but taking time to reset throughout the day can help us focus and center. The busy mystic has a life full of obligations from work, family, relationships and other responsibilities, which makes it all the more important to find balance. This starts with being mindful of energy and thoughts and incorporating intentional practices throughout the day. For the busy mystic, creating momentum comes easily, but maintaining it can be challenging with constant demands coming from outside sources. The key is to downsize the time of the practice without sacrificing the quality and intention. Instead of an hour of meditation, a 20-minute session can be equally beneficial. We can focus on our surroundings while walking to the car, do breathwork while at a child’s soccer game and be mindful of the flavors and texture of our food at every meal. Knowing that those tools are there at any time allows us to move forward with guidance.

How does the shaman’s techniques help our sleep be more restful?

Sleep is an important medicine that heals us on the physical and energy level. This is an opportunity for our bodies to go into maintenance and repair that is crucial for our overall well-being. Since the unconscious does not require rest, it uses this time to go into the energy world and explore unresolved issues. Whatever issues we are working on in our current lives present themselves when we sleep. Using the powerful placement of words and intentions as energy tools, we can alleviate stress, resolve past lives, send love to those who have passed and more. The creator gave us sleep so we can invoke to resolve these issues and awake with an aura that is cleaner and lighter, giving us a more clear and peaceful view of the future. Thyroid-Friendly Eating How to Treat Hypothyroidism With Food

“For women, an especially critical time to check thyroid health is during perimenopause years, when thyroid function can often waver, becoming underactive. Even if lab tests are normal, it is important to speak with a physician that understands the symptoms of hypothyroidism,” says Anna Cabeca, an obstetrician-gynecologist and women’s health expert in Brunswick, Georgia. “Most people can improve or reverse it radically. Diet is very powerful. Start with your shopping list and at the top write: Food is medicine.”

by Veronica Hinke

Offering hope, Michigan-based obstetrician-gynecologist Tabatha Barber says, “It’s often about doing less, not more, to help improve thyroid function. Don’t be afraid that this is something you have to live with forever.” As a teenager, Barber was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune condition that affects the thyroid gland and often causes hypothyroidism. She has learned how to modify her diet for relief.

SKIP THE GLUTEN

S

haped like a butterfly, the thyroid gland in the neck plays a critical role in overall health, as it produces a series of hormones that regulate metabolism, brain development, bone maintenance, and heart, muscle and digestive functions. Thyroid health can be achieved by eating clean, unprocessed foods and maintaining appropriate levels of iodine. According to the National Institutes of Health, nearly five in 100 Americans suffer from hypothyroidism, which occurs 22

manage it. Thyroid disease is a big thing. If people don’t know if they have it, they should be screened for it. If they have it, they should have hope,” says Alan Christianson, a naturopathic endocrinologist and author of The Thyroid Reset Diet: Reverse Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's Symptoms With a Proven IodineBalancing Plan.

when the body does not produce adequate amounts of thyroid hormones. Common symptoms like weight gain, fatigue, inability to tolerate cold temperatures and hair loss should not be ignored. Diagnosis is aided by a blood test that measures levels of thyroid-stimulating hormones. While most cases of an underactive thyroid are mild or cause few obvious symptoms, the disease can become severe if it is left untreated. “Only 10 percent of the population is aware of their thyroid problem and trying to

“Gluten is the main trigger that really seems to irritate the immune system,” says Barber. “A lot of people don’t realize that gluten is in some sauces, salad dressings, seasonings, medication fillers and more. It can be enough to keep the inflammation associated with hypothyroidism going.”

BALANCE IODINE

“Iodine is the Goldilocks mineral,” says Christianson. “It’s important to not consume too much or too little. Those with thyroid disease usually get too much.

MONITOR INGREDIENTS

Barber prioritizes the elimination of artificial ingredients and additives, saying, “It’s about really getting back to basics, eating unprocessed meats, vegetables and some fruits.” She recommends consuming foods rich in zinc and selenium, such as shellfish, legumes, seeds, nuts and diary, as they send signals to the thyroid to produce the right hormone levels. Cabeca shaves selenium-rich Brazil nuts on soups or salads. “Keep them as a staple in the kitchen,” she advises, adding that balance is important when selecting zincand selenium-rich foods because some of them, like dairy, may also contain high levels of iodine.

EAT ANTI-INFLAMMATORY FOODS

Cabeca finds clever ways to sneak anti-inflammatory ingredients into her recipes. For her kafta kabobs, for example, she combines ground meat with finely chopped parsley, garlic, tomatoes or dried shiso leaves and tops them with cashew butter or tahini sauce. Similarly, she uses plenty of parsley in her tabouleh—a traditional Middle Eastern salad—and replaces the customary bulgur wheat with chopped Brussels sprouts or cauliflower. According to Northwestern Medicine, cauliflower can be part of a healthy thyroid diet, along with other cruciferous vegetables. “These are foods that I grew up on,” Cabeca says, noting that parsley is a natural diuretic that is also good for the thyroid. Recipes From a Seasonal Kitchen “Oranges and lemons add a nice twist to fire cider,” says Moonwise Herbs Founder Linda Conroy (MoonwiseHerbs.com). She also suggests considering adding antiviral ingredients like elderberries or echinacea root.

Fire Cider 101: The Basics of This Centuries-Old Homemade Cure by Veronica Hinke Fire ciders—potent herbal vinegar tonics made with powerful roots, vegetables and herbs like ginger, horseradish, turmeric, echinacea, rosemary, hot peppers, onions, garlic and more—can help be a mid-winter immune system boost that we all need this time of year. It’s the season of sniffles and stuffed noses, but a growing group of herbalists believe that a good batch of fire cider can go a long way in improving health. Fire ciders are based on a centuries-old approach to making health-boosting tonics. Some consider Rosemary Gladstar’s 2019 book Fire Cider! 101 Zesty Recipes for Health-Boosting Remedies Made with Apple Cider Vinegar a modern guide that broke ground again on creating ciders that can taste as good as they can help build immunity. Gladstar is widely credited with creating the catchy name “fire cider”. Recently, herb enthusiasts everywhere are

stirring up all sorts of new recipes and approaches. Those that are sensitive to some of the strongest fire cider ingredients, like onions or hot peppers, can substitute ingredients that also promote better health, like citrus, berries or milder roots. “The magic for me is how fire ciders can be made with ingredients from the farm and the forest,” says Petra Page-Mann, co-founder of Fruition Seeds (FruitionSeeds.com), who sometimes also infuses vitamin C-rich white pine needles and rosehips into her fire ciders. She points out that fire ciders are as easy to make as they are nutritious. No measuring is necessary. Ingredients can be added according to preference. “For those who love ginger, go heavy on the ginger,” Page-Mann notes. “There are no set proportions; use what’s on hand. Fire ciders are super easy to make and really can’t be messed up.”

Popular fire cider recipes can easily be adapted to include favorite ingredients that are widely available. Consider adding jalapeno peppers, juniper berries or radishes to popular fire cider recipes. After they’ve had time to sit and rest for at least one month, fire ciders can have a variety of uses. Conroy adds a splash of flavor-filled fire ciders to her homemade marinades, sauces and salad dressings. “They spice up the flavor and add immune-boosting qualities,” she explains. “Salad dressing is something I have not purchased in a very long time.” Fire ciders can be consumed by the spoonful as often as desired. Enthusiasts suggest taking a quick spoonful once a week or once daily and increasing the amount when feeling rundown or ill. Because fire cider is made with vinegar, if sealed well, it can be stored for a year or longer either in the refrigerator or in a pantry.

Individualized Alzheimer’s Treatments A New Frontier in Disease Reversal by Dana Thacker, BSN, RN

A

ccording to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 6 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, and the numbers are expected to rise to nearly 13 million by 2050. In addition to the loss of cherished memories, more than 11 million unpaid caregivers provide an estimated 18 billion hours of care for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients annually. Given the costs and burdens of the disease, many people wonder whether Alzheimer’s is reversible. Recent discoveries indicate that may be possible.

leading cause of death in the United States and the most common reason for dementia in older adults. During the early stages of the disease, neurons within the brain become damaged without apparent symptoms. This destruction can occur for a decade without recognition, resulting in delayed diagnosis and treatment. Protein buildup forces healthy neurons to stop functioning and sever connections, which likely provokes brain cell death and shrinkage.

MECHANISMS OF ALZHEIMER’S

Research published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease offers new hope for patients. Twenty-five participants with pre-Alzheimer’s or early-stage dementia were evaluated to identify potential contributors to cognitive decline using brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), genetic testing and

BREAKTHROUGH IN TREATMENT

Cognitive testing after the nine-month treatments showed that 84 percent of the participants not only maintained neurological function, but also improved cognition. A follow-up MRI also showed an increase in gray matter volume. The researchers noted in their report that a larger, controlled trial is warranted. “Dementia is not a death sentence,” states Kat Toups, a functional medicine psychiatrist and co-contributor to the precision treatment research. In her own practice, she embraces a patient-centric, multimodal approach to treating Alzheimer’s that focuses on three components—infection, inflammation and immunity. By reducing inflammation and treating infections, she asserts, the body is ready to receive immune-building therapies.

ANSWERING THE SKEPTICS

“Mainstream medicine has been going about [Alzheimer’s treatment] the wrong way. I was taught to make a diagnosis, then write a prescription for something that doesn’t work,” says Dr. Dale Bredesen, a co-contributor to the aforementioned study. Recent trials have suggested that current pharmaceutical treatments for Alzheimer’s, such as Donanemab, merely slow the rate of disease progression, rather than reverse its effects.

With his personalized, precision-medicine approach, Bredesen aims to do better. He equates Alzheimer’s to COVID-19, noting, “When the pandemic hit, nations entered protection mode. Economies suffered and went into a recession. In the same way, receptors within our brain can also go into a recession or protection mode. However, when these same receptors receive adequate resources, they continue to grow and make connections. Neurons shift from protection mode to connection mode, reversing the effects of Alzheimer’s.”

THE BREDESEN PROTOCOL

Based on his research, Bredesen asserts that Alzheimer’s is the result of an imbalance in the brain’s neuroplasticity signaling. He has identified 36 factors that can trigger downsizing in the brain, including metabolic derangement, poor nutrient status, lack of trophic support [chemical signaling] and exposure to viruses. The Bredesen Protocol is designed to change a patient’s biochemistry to correct those imbalances by addressing patient-specific triggers. Apollo Health, where Bredesen is chief science officer, has developed a software algorithm that uses patient data from medical questionnaires, laboratory testing and cognitive assessments to offer an analysis of the patient’s cognitive risk factors and a personalized treatment plan designed to prevent and reverse cognitive decline. The patient works with practitioners and coaches trained in the protocol to implement the treatment plan, which covers seven areas: nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress, brain stimulation, detoxification and supplements. The individualized nature of Bredesen’s Protocol is foundational to the program’s success. To learn more or to find a practitioner or coach trained in the Bredesen Protocol, visit ApolloHealthCo.com/bredesen-protocol. promote their performances, and they employ those same venues to get the word out about their book-focused work.

Using Social Media for Positive Change

On Instagram, for example, the Pierce girls encourage Illinois kids to check out their curated reading list, apply for a grant or push for state legislation that compels the inclusion of diverse authors in K-12 curriculums. “I feel like [social media] is a really good tool to use, because it allows you to get to a wide variety of people,” Phallon notes. “It hits adults; it hits teenagers; it hits anybody. It allows you to really push your message out there.”

ocial media has made it easier than ever to share ideas, and today’s generation of digital natives are adept at using it. With one video post, they can reach thousands in minutes. Welcome to the world of “kidfluencers”: young people with throngs of online followers that use their platforms to sway their peers (and adults, too). Aged 16 or younger, these engaged leaders know the ins-and-outs of the latest technology and understand that there is power in becoming more than just a passive viewer. While some use social media outlets to earn sponsorships or market products, others leverage their online brands to inspire agents of change and make a positive difference in the world. 28

REACHING THE READING MASSES

When eighth-graders Kyra and Phallon Pierce noticed a racially insensitive book and zero multi-cultural authors on an assigned reading list, the Chicagoland-based identical twins decided to take action. They launched Positive Change Charities, a nonprofit that awards book grants to promote diverse authors to kids in need and underfunded K-12 libraries across Illinois. “We’ve given out about 4,000 books, and I’m really excited about that because we go to the schools and personally get to give those books out,” Kyra says. The twins are competitive dancers and use social media to

Known as The Conservation Kid, Cash Daniels is a 14-year-old influencer from Chattanooga who uses Instagram to promote Tennessee River preservation efforts. Since he began this work at age 7, he has helped recycle 2,000 miles of fishing line and remove more than 30,000 pounds of trash and two tons of aluminum cans from area waterways. He leads community cleanups and often speaks directly to children at school functions. “Kids may be a small part of the population, but we’re 100 percent of the future,” Daniels asserts. “And if somebody says you can’t do it, get out there and prove them wrong.” Instagram is his preferred outlet because that’s where he feels he can reach the most people in the limited time he can commit to online endeavors. In addition to leveraging social media to inspire others, he has met some of his best friends online, as well as people wanting to collaborate with him to amplify his message.

PROTECTING YOUNG INFLUENCERS

While influencers like the Pierce twins and Daniels work hard to promote positive messages online, they are not immune to the more negative realities of being in the spotlight. If their interests or values don’t align

with abusive keyboard warriors, these well-meaning kids may be subjected to trolling, online bullying and hate speech. Dr. Meg Arroll, a psychologist and author of Tiny Traumas: When You Don’t Know What’s Wrong, but Nothing Feels Quite Right, believes that online influencing is a form of work and families should try to strike the right work-life balance. “How many hours a day would we allow our kids to work, even if it’s something that they wanted to do?” she asks. Arroll highlights the complexities that parents must navigate when a child starts to earn money or products in exchange for social media influence. Those likes, shares and other types of engagement, she says, trigger the reward center in human brains, and that can lead to addictive-like behavior. Recognizing the dangers, the parents of both the Pierce twins and Daniels limit their kids’ social media use and monitor posts so that they can address any worrisome events or behaviors before they get out of control.

INSPIRING NEW KIDFLUENCERS

When the Pierce twins visit schools, their audiences are comprised of kids just like them. “There’s no difference between us; we’re all the same,” says Phallon, and Kyra chimes in that this commonality can be inspiring. Daniels believes that when kids see him in action on social media, they are motivated to act, as well. He is a role model— opening new possibilities for future kidfluencers. Green Living

Growing Young in Nature How Seniors Heal in the Great Outdoors

Nathan Bilow/Canva Pro

by Kelcie Ottoes

S

pending time outdoors is a valuable pastime for individuals in their golden years. Besides being exceedingly pleasurable, communing with nature, breathing fresh air, feeling the warmth of the sun or hearing birdsong can markedly improve a person’s physical, mental and emotional well-being. For seniors, exposure to green and blue spaces inspires a more active lifestyle that is both spiritually and socially engaged, thereby offsetting the challenges of chronic illness, disability and isolation. Whether playing Scrabble under the shade of a tree, strolling along the banks of a lake with friends or planting flowers and herbs in a raised garden bed, adding that outdoor element to any activity is a win-win.

PHYSICAL REWARDS

A vigorous workout outside is not necessary to derive benefits. Fresh air boosts the immune system by increasing white blood cell production. Merely living near trees can extend a person’s lifespan by up to 12 years, according to a Harvard University study of 30

Chicago

NA Chicago.com

more than 100,000 women over an eightyear period. Another study of 350,000 people in Holland found that green spaces can improve overall health, reduce health complaints, lower the propensity for psychiatric illness and engender a general feeling of improved health. “Exposure to natural light fosters the synthesis of vitamin D, which is crucial for bone health and mood regulation,” says Dr. Ryan Sultán, an assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University. “Participating in outdoor activities such as walking, gardening or simply enjoying nature contributes to improved physical fitness.” Gardening improves physical strength, flexibility and overall health and quality of life. Older adults that regularly take walks report less pain and sleep problems compared to adults that don’t get outside every day. Nature also promotes healthier blood pressure, higher energy levels, lower heart rate, reduced stress, less chronic pain and

a reduction of illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and respiratory issues.

MENTAL AND COGNITIVE IMPROVEMENTS

Nature offers mental and cognitive benefits to seniors. While simply viewing pictures of natural settings can reduce mental fatigue, a walk outside offers a greater positive impact. A University of Michigan study found that spending time outdoors can enhance memory and attention span by up to 20 percent. Forest bathing—a wilderness walk while engaging the senses—originated in Japan and has become increasingly popular with older populations. A study in Singapore found that seniors engaged in a horticulture program experienced improvements in sleep, cognitive function and psychological well-being, as well as a reduction in anxiety. Older populations that engage in more strenuous activities like walking, biking or running in natural settings have a lower risk of mental health issues. Green and blue spaces foster feelings of renewal, restoration and spiritual connection, while physical activity in such settings enhances mood, reduces depression risks, lowers stress and improves cognitive function.

EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL BENEFITS

Loneliness and isolation greatly impact seniors, and social interactions outside can help alleviate some of this loneliness. Nature provides space for multi-generational social interaction and engagement, including planned activities with friends and family or impromptu gatherings with neighbors. Those with access to green space have a stronger sense of unity and belonging with their community. “Mindful walking is a simple way to get started building a relationship with the outdoors and is conducive to experiencing nature in a positive way while being present,” says John

Dattilo, Ph.D., a professor in leisure studies at Pennsylvania State University. “To do this, we pay attention to the environment and notice things through our senses. We focus on what we are grateful for, including our surroundings or other aspects of our life.”

The main barriers stopping seniors from getting outside are mobility limitations, accessibility issues and safety concerns. One study found reduced mobility was the primary factor limiting nature experiences for older populations. “If we have a fear of falling, then we reduce our movement. If we reduce our movement, then we are more likely to fall, and that spirals,” says Dattilo. Caretakers can help by encouraging seniors to pick the activities they want to do, without stifling their interests. “If people pursue activities they have interest in, they are much more likely to experience leisure,” says Dattilo. “And leisure gives us meaning and purpose in life. It also helps us feel authentic. It’s not as much about recreational activity, and more about engagement.” If seniors want to venture beyond their homes, choose accessible locations where there are paved paths, shelter and bathrooms. Come prepared for the activity. Dress comfortably, use mobility aids, apply sun protection and bring water and snacks. For those that are uncomfortable spending time in nature alone, invite others or join a senior-friendly program, class or event. If leaving the home or bed is no longer an option, give virtual reality a try, which has been shown to provide seniors with some of the benefits of the outdoors. There are many commercially available virtual reality applications such as Google Earth VR and Wander on Meta Quest. Bald Eagle Watching in Illinois by Sheryl DeVore

fish. At these and other bald eagle watching events, visitors can see adults with their bright white heads and matching white tails as well as immature bald eagles, which have darker plumage, as they don’t acquire the full white head and tail until they reach about 5 years old. “This is an important annual event because nature is the quintessential thing that can help people come together,” Iwanicki says. “The bald eagle story is a success story,” she adds. “It shows the power of the people to do good, as they worked to bring eagles back from the brink of extinction.”

“Their numbers plummeted in the 1950s because of loss of habitat and overuse of pesticides, particularly DDT,” explains Iwanicki. Ingesting the DDT caused the birds to lay eggs with thinner than normal shells. “When the birds would incubate, they’d break their own eggs,” she continues.

T

he remarkable comeback of the once-endangered bald eagle has made it fairly easy to find these birds in winter in areas of Illinois, especially with help from local organizations and partners. In fact, today, more than 3,000 bald eagles spend the coldest months in the state, making it the best place to view these majestic raptors in the United States, after Alaska. “In the middle of winter, searching for bald eagles gives you that extra nudge to get outside,” says Stacy Iwanicki, natural resources coordinator and naturalist for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). Bald eagle watching and appreciation events are held statewide in January, with 32

many near the Chicago area, including at Starved Rock State Park and in Rock Island. The IDNR, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Friends of Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge, McHenry County Audubon Society and others have run a free annual event— In Search of Bald Eagles—each January in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin for the past 20 years. This year, the popular event will take place on January 20. The public can visit one of several designated eagle watching spots, including McHenry Dam, Algonquin Dam and Carpentersville Dam. Volunteers will set up telescopes to give visitors closer views of the birds of prey. Binoculars can also be used to watch riveting scenes like when an eagle dips its talons into the water to snatch

“Bald eagles were absent as a nesting species in the Chicago area for more than 100 years, with the last known nesting pair in 1900,” Iwanicki states. The bird was placed on the federally endangered species list in 1978. “People worked together to protect the birds and put limits on pesticides in the United States, and it made a difference,” says Iwanicki. In the 1980s and 1990s, numbers began to increase nationwide, and in 2004, the first bald eagle nest in a century in the Chicago area was recorded at the Little Calumet River. The bald eagle was removed from the federal threatened and endangered species list three years later. Bald eagles are not nesting in Illinois in January and February. Rather, the birds spend winters in Illinois because of food availability at various locks and dams, especially along the Mississippi River. They will begin nesting in the region in about March, while others wintering here will fly elsewhere to raise young.

“A number of rivers and lakes here don’t quite freeze over in winter, which draws eagles to an ample food source, typically from mid-January through mid-February,” notes Iwanicki. The birds congregate near locks and dams, where fish get stunned by the turbulent water and become easy pickings. Bald eagles also will eat other sources of protein. For example, local birder Ari Shavit saw eight bald eagles feeding on a deer carcass on the ground one January day. One of his favorite places to visit is Lock and Dam No. 14, in Iowa, just across the Illinois border. “It’s a great place to photograph eagles,” says Shavit.

“The first time Jake saw an eagle was quite memorable,” Rich Bartecki recalls. “The temperature was about 5 degrees out, so there weren’t many people around. There were probably a dozen eagles swooping into the Illinois River to fish. The eagles were very active and they were soaring and hitting the water to feed. I have a great photo of Jake wrapped up like the kid in A Christmas Story to stay warm. We stayed outside for about 10 minutes, then went into the lodge to have breakfast. I still remember it like yesterday,” he says. “We’ve also been 20 feet from eagles resting in trees along the upland trail,” he adds. “When you’re that close, you really get a feeling for their size.” The Barteckis also view other birds along the Illinois River while searching for eagles, and suggest bringing a pair of binoculars and a bird book. “We’ve seen every type of winter bird, plus owls, sandhill

Rich Bartecki, of Evanston, and his son, Jake Bartecki, 25, have been going to Starved Rock State Park to see bald eagles in winter for the past 18 years. The park hosts Bald Eagle Appreciation Days in late January, but the Barteckis typically go earlier in the year. “The eagles have been there every year we have gone,” Rich Bartecki says. “We enjoy watching them feed in the Illinois River and roost on Plum Island.”

The open water that attracts the eagles also attracts a variety of waterfowl including mergansers. “That’s one of the things I enjoy the most while we’re waiting for the eagles to appear is talking with people about all the other birds they can see while they’re waiting,” shares Iwanicki. Prepare wisely for a bald eagle trip, both Rich Bartecki and Iwanicki suggest. “Expect all types of weather,” says Rich Bartecki. “We’ve seen sub-zero temperatures; blizzards; light snow; sunny, comfortable 32-degree days; and pouring rain and 45 degrees,” he says. “I would recommend bringing warm clothes, wearing lots of layers and bringing a raincoat. Also, good hiking shoes are a must.” The colder the better for finding larger numbers of eagles congregating in one place. As more water freezes, eagles need to search for open water to continue their feeding. During warmer winters, eagles spread out more and fewer are seen in one spot. Rich Bartecki says it’s important to stay on the trails at Starved Rock, or anywhere while watching the eagles. “During the winter, there

can be lots of ice and slippery patches, which can be dangerous if you stray off the marked trails at Starved Rock,” he points out. “The marked trails are in good shape and give you access to the eagles, along with all the waterfalls in the park.” Iwanicki says each year during the bald eagle search in McHenry County, she puts special “heaters” in the toes of her shoes to keep warm and wears layers of clothing, as well as a hat, scarf and thick mittens. “It’s rewarding to be able to stand out there, and you know it’s really cold, but you know how to dress for it,” she says. That makes it even more satisfying when watching America’s national emblem soaring in the air.

30th Anniversary by Kimberly Whittle Humans are social creatures by nature, and leaning into community is key to a long and healthy life. Look no further than the five so-called Blue Zones in places around the planet where people regularly live to be 100 years old. While eating nutritious food and exercising regularly are important aspects to a healthy lifestyle, Dan Buettner, a Blue Zones expert, believes part of the secret to a long and healthy life is finding purpose and doing it with help from a meaningful community. Buettner’s observations are supported by research. An article published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine summarized the significant evidence that connection to a community helps people physically and mentally with improvements in weight control, blood sugar levels, cancer survival, cardiovascular health and overall mental health, as well as a notable mitigation of depression and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. In a Brigham Young University meta-analysis of 148 studies to determine the effect of social relationships on the risk of mortality, researchers reported that social connections with friends, family, neighbors or colleagues improved the odds of living longer by 50 percent.
