The Atlanta Printmakers Studio (APS) will soon be calling the ATL Airport District home. The APS, which has been supporting the art of printmaking in metro Atlanta since 2006, is relocating to a new studio space in Hapeville. Read on to learn more about what the new studio has to o er and what it means for the local community.
The Atlanta Printmakers Studio was founded to provide a well-equipped printmaking studio for local artists as well as raise the awareness of printmaking as an art form. The studio was in the Metropolitan Warehouse complex near West End Mall. Since its doors opened in 2006, the studio has o ered seasoned artists and novices alike opportunities to enroll in a variety of printmaking classes, workshops, and more. APS has also developed a continuing calendar of outreach events to serve the local community. With each year, program o erings have grown; APS has added annual artist residencies, student scholarships, collectors’ prints, artist exchanges and an increasing number of exhibitions.
The new Atlanta Printmakers Studio will feature
two separate studios, printmaking museum, gallery, store, and outdoor gathering space to better accommodate all of the studio’s program o erings. Located in Hapeville at the corner of Virginia Avenue and South Central Avenue, the new studio space is currently being renovated. What once was a 1950’s Amoco gas station is transforming into a 3000 sq ft dream studio. Kathy Garrou, APS’s Executive Director, shared how an artist in the Atlanta Printmakers Studio introduced APS to David Burt with Hapeville
Economic Development and also to the Hapeville Development Authority. “Everyone was so welcoming. It was not just bottom dollar for them,” explained Garrou. The more time the APS Board spent with the city, the more APS felt that moving to Hapeville was the right choice. Its proximity to the West End studio space was also convenient. Only 6-7 miles from its prior location, the new studio’s location did not feel like a radical shift or that drastic of a commute for existing artists.
In fact, APS’s existing artists are excited about the move and the opportunities the new studio space will present. With two separate studios within the new building, the space is divided so that classes can take place in one studio while artists work autonomously in the other. Atlanta Printmakers Studio’s Board of Advisors have seen the space and are delighted. The building has been completely refurbished and tailored to the needs of APS. “It’s so much more than what was expected,” exclaimed Garrou. The contractor and architects have been painstakingly careful and top notch with the detail going into the new studio space.
The new studio is set to have its Grand Opening on January 28th, 2023. APS is accepting new artists and anyone interested in learning more about printmaking. Classes are open to all levels and APS members receive a discount. Classes are scheduled to start the third week of January 2023. Artist renters looking to rent studio space can do so after completing orientation. Rental rates vary based on length of contract and the studio offers rentals by the day, month to month, 6 months, and 12 months. Artists that rent for longer periods receive better rates (at a discounted price).
Even artist renters are encouraged to take classes in-studio since some printmaking methods require an 8-week class to better understand and begin to master the method. Atlanta Printmakers Studio is planning to have some of their most popular classes back on
the agenda including etching, screen printing, relief, and letterpress. Part of APS’s mission is to support artists, APS plans to give artists an opportunity to showcase and sell their art in the new studio. “The new Gallery space is going to be rented for solo shows at reasonable prices,” shared Garrou. APS will also host artist residen-
Printmakers Studio Continued from page 11
cies in the new studio. During these residencies, artists have access to the studio to work on their art for 6 months and then culminate their time with an exhibit which is open to the public.
APS takes its partnership with the city and the local community very seriously. For a recent relief workshop, the Atlanta Printmakers Studio partnered with the City of Hapeville who brought in a nationally and internationally renowned artist. “It’s a really good partnership,” shared Garrou. To further its partnership with the City of Hapeville, APS plans to provide its services to the community at large. APS has been offering free demos at Hapeville’s art festivals. Garrou also shared that APS hopes to become more involved with the local school system. They have begun talking to middle schools and hope to either bring students into the studio or take printmaking into the schools.
APS also offers studio internships for college aged students to introduce them to what it is like to run a studio.
Whether you are looking to create art, purchase art, or learn about printmaking, APS has something for everyone. The studio’s relocation to Hapeville is helping to solidify Hapeville as a home for the arts. With its murals, public art projects, and efforts to attract art businesses, Hapeville continues to prove its commitment to the arts. “We are excited to meet the Hapeville community, and to introduce our artists to Hapeville,” said Garrou. Make sure to celebrate the studio opening on December 4th along with Atlanta Printmakers Studio and the City of Hapeville.

It’s the small things that add more life!
The City of South Fulton offers its residents something that we’re all learning, once again, to appreciate—quality of life. The big things—malls, franchises, big box chain stores— are not necessarily the things that make communities more livable. Little things often do that. As travel returns, the essence of experiencing new things is not only found in far off places. Exploring South Fulton and supporting local businesses can be fun and plays a key role in sustaining the community and showcasing it as a viable destination.
Small business, local merchants, family-owned restaurants. Neighbors whose names you actually know. These things all help to make communities more livable.

Braggin’ on the District
The ATL Airport District spreads the word about the Southside
Many major cities have a tourism board or CVB (Convention and Visitors Bureau) responsible for promoting hospitality and enticing visitors. These marketing organizations turn an ordinary dot on the map into a destination—so much so that even those unfamiliar with the industry will recognize some famous campaigns, such as the iconic “I ❤ NY” and the oft-imitated “What happens in Vegas.” But did you know that Atlanta’s Southside has a CVB of its own?
The ATL Airport District CVB was formed ten years ago by the City of College Park. It now serves the cities of Hapeville and Union City as well, strengthening each city’s e orts to stimulate the local economy via business and leisure travel. With under a dozen people on sta , this little powerhouse has been behind the curtain on everything from booking conferences to placing magazine ads and participating in international trade shows. It’s all in service of a singular goal: raising the area’s profile as an appealing destination.
“We are passionate about the work we do to bring in visitors from near and far,” says ATL Airport District President Cookie Smoak. “We’re committed to showcasing the area in a positive light to achieve that goal. I believe that dedication has been integral to our success.”
The ATL Airport District approaches its goal in two primary ways: directly, by courting visitors and event planners, and more abstractly, by elevating the reputation of the area. In major cities worldwide, popular prejudice drives suspicion of areas “around the airport,” but our CVB works hard to show
By Kristina Ackermanthe world that Atlanta’s airport is surrounded by a safe and vibrant community—which, to the astonishment of passing travelers, is separate from the City of Atlanta, despite o ering unparalleled access to its airport and attractions. Because these e orts generate hotel revenue, the organization is funded by a special hotel tax, the yearly net total of which has more than doubled since its inception in 2012. That’s a clear mathematical testament to our CVB team’s success in attracting out-of-town customers each year.

The team highlights local hospitality businesses, targeting consumers who are a drive or a flight away with a variety of advertising, public relations, and out-of-the-box creative campaigns. When a favorite local restaurant is featured in popular media like Atlanta Eats, the ATL Airport District is usually behind it, sending out leads and arranging for coverage. And when a group of visitors convenes in the District for an event at the GICC (Georgia International Convention Center) or one of our event hotels, it’s our CVB that coordinates room blocks, tempting packages, and customized guides to help direct attendees to our restaurants and retail establishments—all free of charge to the visitor.
Speaking of the GICC, the CVB team is instrumental in many of its large event bookings. In recent years, they’ve welcomed the popular Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge Kickoff (an annual HBCU football game), as well as volleyball, gaming, weightlifting, and wrestling tournaments that bring players, fans and families into the District.
Of course, the fun doesn’t end at sports groups. The CVB books high-profile arts and community events, too. For instance, the Atlanta Black Theater Festival takes place annually at the Kimpton Overland Hotel, and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority hosted its 69th South Atlantic Regional Conference at the GICC in April, generating an estimated $6 million economic impact for the area—and resulting in a $5,000 donation from the AKAs to College Park Elementary’s art program.
In addition to bringing private events and attendees to the District, the CVB also extends its masterful marketing prowess to the promotion of year-round public events hosted by each city, like Hapeville’s Sunday Variety Series at the Academy Theatre, College Park’s Kids Fest, and Union City’s Pinktober charity 5k event. These festivities draw folks out to support local businesses while showing off our cities at their best.
Another way the ATL Airport District shines a beautiful light on the area is by putting on Spin the District, a multi-part
cycling series. Each city hosts one of Spin’s annual events, attracting thousands of fans and cyclists from the far corners of the globe. It pulls participants from nearly three dozen states and 14 countries while bringing the local community together for family-friendly festivals.
“Spin the District is such a fun event and has put our three cities on the map as a premier cycling destination,” says Smoak. “We joined the acclaimed Speed Week with our two criteriums, and have since quickly become the secondlargest event in the state of Georgia.”
The positive ramifications of Spin the District extend beyond its direct economic impact. These events place an exciting social media spotlight on the area several times each year and create a lasting impression that grows wider and more influential with each event.
All in all, the ATL Airport District does much more than what can be seen on the surface or measured in hotel/motel tax revenues. Each time a traveler makes the smart choice to book their stay near the airport instead of downtown, the ATL Airport District triumphs. This CVB has flourished right alongside its cities these last ten years, from enriching local culture through community events to drawing tourism dollars into locally-owned businesses. Their efforts will persist through future decades, continuing to build the District’s up-and-coming reputation as an internationally-recognized destination in its own right.
