Balkans International Wine Competition 2012 revealed world class Balkan wines! The idea to organize a Balkan International Wine Competition was conceived a year ago. The tremendous increase in quality of Balkan wines contributed to such a development. Our idea was to create a powerful marketing tool which will rely on synergy among wine producers and promoters from all Balkan countries. More than 400 wines (90 wineries) from the Balkan region competed in the five categories: sparkling, dry white, dry rose, dry red and dessert. The international panel of judges under the chairmanship of Konstantinos Lazarakis MW, who is the only Master of Wine in the Balkans, together with his esteemed colleagues: Caroline Gilby MW from the UK, Christy Canterbury MW from the US, Paul Liversedge MW from the UK (residing in Switzerland) as well as other 16 wine experts from Italy, Germany, Sweden, Russia, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia and Romania assessed wines from 10 Balkan countries in accordance with the Australian system. The panel of judges awarded 23 Gold Medals (Bulgaria: 10, Greece: 7, Slovenia: 3, Macedonia: 2 and Croatia: 1) which represents 6% of all wines entered for the Competition. It is a standard at similar competitions to award gold medals to approximately 10% of all entries, which clearly shows that the international panel of judges was very strict and demanding in the process of judging the Balkan wines. The winners of the trophies per categories are as follows: Sparkling wine: Brut Rose Estate 2008, Edoardo Miroglio Winery, Bulgaria White wine: Idisma Drios Chardonnay 2010, Wine Art Winery, Greece Rose wine: Sarva 2011, Dragomir Winery, Bulgaria Red wine: Bin 41 Merlot 2008, Santa Sarah Winery, Bulgaria Dessert wine: Season of memories 2009, Minkov Brothers Winery, Bulgaria See you next year for the BIWC 2013! Dragomir Winery
Bulgaria
The creation of Dragomir Winery estate comes from the dream of two Bulgarian enologists Natalia Gadjeva and Konstantin Stoev willing to change the perception of Bulgarian wines that are attractive, interesting, varied in tastes of each different brand and with a constant quality throughout the years. The basis for the creation of these wines lies in the experience of the wine specialists, goaded by their never-ending interest in experimentations. The white wines are Chardonnay, and the Rose is also blended. The total quantity of wine produced for a given year is 60,000 bottles under the brands PITOS, KARIZMA, SARVA, ALL in ONE, AMRITTA. Medi Valley Bulgaria Medi Valley is a classic winery complex which appeared on Bulgarian winery map in year 2007. It is located in the village of Smochevo, in the foothills of the southwest Rila Mountains, 550 m altitude, in the very heart of Struma valley, the picturesque road to Rila Monastery. It has a modern wine cellar and 400 ha of vineyards, planted with Chardonnay, Traminer, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, etc. Vineyards are south-west, on alluvial-meadow and cinnamon forest soils, slightly acidic, with proper clay and iron content. Thousands of years ago the lands among the middle reaches of the river were inhabited by the Medi - a Thracian tribe, known for its cult to wine. In honor of the people who laid the foundation of winemaking in this part of the valley it is called the Medi Valley. The terroir - unique and beneficial to viticulture - favors the cultivation of both white and red sorts. That fact together with a planned, timely and appropriate agronomic technique and reduced production in line with the technological requirements of the Oenologists result in grapes of which impressive wines with high quality are made. The first vintage of the winery was the 2007. INCANTO Syrah single vineyard vintage 2010

Villa Yustina
Bulgaria
Villa Yustina known to some as 'workshop for masterpieces' is one of the newer wine cellars in Bulgaria. Designed to be capable of processing 300 tons of grape it is eqipped with facilities made by 'Tomica Metal'. Situated in the village of Yustina, the choice of location is justified by the region's proximity to Plovdiv as well as to the established vine growing area. Moreover, it is a unique combination of breathtaking mountain scenery as well as impressive ancient history. The latter being an important prerequisite for the developing of wine tourism, which by the end of the year will be rapidly growing at Yustina when our tasting halls will be completed. Our first campaign was in 2007. Chateau Copsa
Bulgaria
Chateau Copsa is a family owned estate. The elegant imposing building of the Chateau is situated in a hill surrounded by the estates vineyards that are spread in the heart of the world famous Rose Valley of the Thracian region in Bulgaria. The name Copsa is derived from the ancient name of the main city of this region Karlovo, a place with rich history and traditions since Thracian times. Our own vineyards are 50 hectares divided in five grape varieties the native grape Karlovo Red Misket, Muscat Ottonel, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. They are situated in the foothills of the Balkan on well-drained soils. Most of the vines are over 30 years old. We know that the best way to make great wine is to grow remarkable grapes. We limit the yields through pruning and green harvest. We sacrifice the quantity of our harvest to generate higher quality fruit. The harvest begin in late September and last till the end of October waiting for the optimum ripeness of each individual grape variety. Every bunch for creation of our wines is hand picked in early morning hours to preserve flavors and aromas of the fruit. The winery is at a very close distance from the vineyards, that guarantee the good quality and freshness of the grape. The natural cool climate of the region additionally helps the grape to be cooled and achieve highest concentration of the fruit. After the grapes passed the selection table it is crushed and pneumatic press is used for the pressing of the grape. Selected cultivated yeasts are used for the fermentation according to every grape variety. The fermentation goes in stainless steel vats and in French and American barrels. All the processes from grape harvest to the bottling and labeling of the ready to market final product are conducted in the Winery of Chateau Copsa. 6IX Chardonnay Barrel Fermented 2010

Light Castle
Bulgaria
Light Castle winery is situated in the region of Ivailovgrad and has its own vineyards in the villages of Belopolyane and Svirachi, in the south-eastern tip of Rhodope Mountains. The region boats some of Bulgaria's best soil and climate conditions for growing high-quality red grapes varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. This wine heritage and tradition can be found in the many nearby ancient Thracian sanctuaries, considered by many as the home playground of Dionysius the ancient Greek God of wine and festivity! In 2004 we planted first 23 ha from our land, with certified vines. We started with three varieties Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, selected according to the soil and climate conditions of our region. During 2006 we planted an additional 32 ha of land with different vine varieties such as Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Anchelotta. The goal was to sample the land with some completely new varieties and at the same time, create new opportunities for possible blends of high quality red wines. Chateau Burgozone
Bulgaria
Chateau Burgozone is a family run young Bulgarian winery situated at a distance of 180 km from Sofia and 4 km from the town of Oriahovo, on the steep slope of the Southern bank of the Danube River. There are remains of the ancient Roman Fortress of BURGOZONE within the territory of the vineyard. The vines and wine complex has been named after it. The fortress was located on the ancient road connecting Belgrade with Constantinople and defended the Roman Empire from the invasions of barbarians. Material proofs found there, such as remains from jars and other ceramic pottery, connected with vine growing and winemaking date back to that particular period. The unique terroir, relatively warm climate, altitude and Carbonate black soil provide excellent conditions for grape growing and contribute for the production of high- quality white and red wines. With its vineyards spread over an area of 100 hectares, Chateau Burgozone is a good example of skillful combination of ancient wine traditions with modern world's wine-growing practices. Although a relatively new producer Chateau Burgozone wines have already proved their enormous potential with numerous international awards, including the first great gold medal for Bulgarian wine at ConcoursMondial de Brussels, three gold and one silver medal at ConcoursMondial 2012, gold medal at Wine & Delicacies, Prague 2012, gold medal at International Wine Contest in Bucharest 2012, Silver medal at Mundusvini and several Bronze at Decanter London. The wines of Chateau Burgozone are already on the market in Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic and Canada. Katarzyna Estate Bulgaria Katarzyna Estate is located at the same latitude as some of the world's most famous wine regions. The location of the Estate is unique as it has been created in the former borderline area, the No Man's Land between Bulgaria and Greece, at the south-east part of the country, in a virgin nature, preserved from human activities during the last few decades. The different varieties and clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Mavrud, Malbec, Tempranillo, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier are selected to perfectly match the climatic features and the structure and type of soils. All this aimed to reveal to a maximum extent the terroir of the region. The planting density is 4130 vines per ha with 2,20 m space between the rows and 1,10 m between the vines. We train our vines at double Cordon. Applying modern viticultural practices and dynamic canopy management we aim at balanced yields, trying to make the best of Katarzyna Estate vineyards.

Borovitza Bulgaria As an artisanal winery we are oriented mainly toward crafting limited volumes of wines with expressive character and carrying the specifics of the terroir and North-Western Bulgaria is a region that offers good opportunities for growing grapes and wines with distinctive characters. The Borovitza series are Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Rikat, Gamza, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir varietals. Grapes were grown in selected vineyards in the region and the wines carry their so specific elevation and minerality. In 2008 after 5 years of barrel aging the winery offered DUX, another fine wine, already considered as a peculiar height in the terroir expression, thus further focusing on the original and neglected sites in this part of the country. In addition limited series of original sparkling wines Ognyan Tzvetanov Premiere Cuvee are released. I believe that crafting such distinctive wines is more a philosophy and a way of life than a business.

Maryan Bulgaria We named Maryan Winery after the village of Maryan, where using a lot of love and dedication we make our limited series of boutique wines. The extraordinary story of the village dates back to the legend of the beautiful daughter of Tsar Ivan Alexander and the sister of Tsar Ivan Shishman – the last ruler of Bulgaria. The village is named after Kera Tamara (Mara) who was sent to become the wife of the Turkish sultan. Built at the foot of Stara Planina the winery comprises the best conditions for making unique wines. For the manufacturing of the wines we only pick the best grapes from controlled vineyards. The technological equipment was manufactured and tailored for the winery in accordance with the classical technology for making red and white wines. The wine ferments in stainless steel vessels, as well as in French and American oak barrels. The Chardonnay and red wines also mature in those barrels. We make dry white wines – Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, rose blend and dry red wine – a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. CHARDONNAY Vintage 2011

Wine Art Estate
Greece
Wine Art Estate was created by the civil engineer Yannis Papadopoulos and the architect Yannis Kalaitzidis, both successful professionals in their own field. Yannis Papadopoulos planted in 1993 a small family vineyard in Mikrochori and started, as a hobby, to vinify his first wines in a small simple outlet. Two years later, in 1995, Yannis Kalaitzidis joined the venture. The result was Wine Art Estate and the first range of products, Techni Alipias , a red, a white and a rose wine, were introduced and gained immediately their share of the quality wines market. Wine Art aims to present how well certain Greek and cosmopolitan varieties are adapted to the microclimate of Drama. Towards this direction, a new wine, Chardonnay Idisma Drios was put to market in 1999. This was the first of a new range of products, Idisma Drios ( sweetly oaked ), to be followed by Assyrtiko, Merlot and Syrah. In great vintages, the Estate also vinifies a limited quantity of Nebbiolo. In 2011, a new wine was added to the Estate's portfolio. It was the single varietal Techni Malagousia.

Several of our wines have received international accolades from important international contests (THE BALKANS INTERNATIONAL WINE COMPETITION 2012 - Sofia, BERLINER WINE TROPHY 2012 - Berlin, INTERNATIONAL WINE & SPIRITS COMPETITION 2012 - London, DECANTER WINE COMPETITION 2012 - London, etc). Angelos Noulas
Greece
The mission of Angelos Noulas boutique Winery, based in Athens Greece, epitomizes to the Dedication to Quality by vinifying grapes from Selected Vineyards with Low Yields and Minimal Winemaking Intervention. Since quality is determined in the vineyard we vinify Chardonnay from a stony vineyard in 1.000 m altitude in northern Peloponnese assuring high diurnal temperature variations and a long hanging period, we opted for a poor sand/clay soil for our Merlot and sand/loam soil for the Gris de Noir in central Greece. The noteworthy quality to price ratio of our small production wines is a challenge for the international wine drinkers standards.

Domaine Karanika
Greece
Domaine Karanika, Amyntaio, Greece At Domaine Karanika (founded by Laurens M. Hartman - Karanika and Annette van Kampen) we work in harmony with nature to protect the health of people and the earth while producing the finest quality wine. Our organic vineyards at the Amyndeo plateau in the far North-west of Greece (the coolest climate of all the wine-producing regions of Greece) include old to very old Xinomavro vines, the younger Assyrtiko, Cabernet Sauvignon and the almost forgotten Limniona. Karanika's winemaking philosophy is minimal handling of grapes and wines with few chemical additions. We work according to Maria Thun's biodynamic calendar in the winery and vineyard therefore our wines 'breathe terroir', are crystal clear, very aromatic and have considerable length. No bombastic heavyweights but straightforward honest wines. The Karanika winery is a three-storey, gravity-flow building situated between the villages of Amyndeo, Vegora and Levea, on a slope at the shores of lake Vegoritis. The exclusive design of the building allows the wines to be made without the disastrous effects of pumps and filters. Amyndeo or Amyntaio, is an area in the far north west of Greece towards the border of Albania and FYROM. Around 650 meters above sea level, it lies on the far side of Mount Vermio, blocked off from the influence of the Aegean. These features of Amyndeon's setting cause the local climate to be entirely continental, though moderated somewhat by the influence of Lake Vegoritis, pushing the Xinomavro vintage for red wine back to midOctober. Kir-Yianni Estate
Greece
The Kir-Yianni Estate was founded in 1997 by Yiannis Boutaris, one of the leading figures in the Greek wine industry, when he left the Boutari Wine Group, the premium family wine company that his grandfather established in 1879. The Kir-Yianni Estate continues a long family tradition focusing on the production of high quality wines which combine style with authenticity and offer true enjoyment, from grapes produced at the Estate s extensive vineyard holdings in the two wine regions of Naoussa and Amyndeon, on the two sides of mount Vermio in North-Western Greece. Today the Kir-Yianni Estate, led by Stellios Boutaris, son of Yiannis, follows its vision into the next phase of its history, by dynamically exploiting the cornerstones of the Kir-Yianni philosophy: desire for innovation, respect for tradition and true knowledge of the wine, from the grape to the end consumer.

Monemvasia Winery
Greece
Monemvasia Winery, G.Tsibidis & Co, was founded in 20 September 1997 in Monemvasia of Lakonia by G.Tsibidis. This initiative was part of a wider business plan with a clear objective: the revival of the Malvasia wine in its birth place. Work covered a number of activities from historical research, to vine search, vine growing ,wine making, bottling, distribution, promotion and trading. Monemvasia Winery started out as part of a research foundation within the PAVE programmes carried out by VITRO, the Agricultural Universities of Athens and Thessalonica, as well as ETHIAGE and had, as its subject, the search and development of the many grape varieties which apparently went into the production of Malvasia wines. In close collaboration with the wine institute, the company then moved to experimental wine making using the identified local varieties. Monemvasia Winery proceeded to create vineyards with these local varieties and acquired more land for further development (a total of 20 hectares). Monemvasia Winery has set up a wine making plant, processing grapes from its own vines as well as from the wider area, producing wines traded under the names: Monemvasios, Laloudi, Maleatis, Kastropolitia Asyrtiko, Kidonitsa, Asproudi, Fileri, Nostos, 300 , Metropolis, Anthosmias and more. Mylonas
Greece
Mylonas winery is a small family winery located in Mesogea of Attica, with almost one century history. Savatiano, Assyrtiko, Malagousia, Agiorgitiko, Mandilaria, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the grape varieties we cultivate with low yields, in 12 hectares. Our aim is the winemaking of small quantities of Attica's grape varieties so as to maintain high quality and gain the best characteristics of each variety. Our goal is the prominence of the Attica vineyard and the production of wines that will pleasantly surprise even the most demanding consumer. The most important help in this effort is the loving relationship between the family and the vine, the know-how the third generation has gained and the completeness of our new contemporary winery.

Gerovassiliou
Greece
Domaine Gerovassiliou has been involved in vine cultivation and winemaking since 1981. On the slopes of Epanomi, a few kilometers away from the city of Thessaloniki, a meticulously well-cared vineyard surrounds the modern winery, where the renowned Domaine Gerovassiliou wines are produced. At the heart of the winery, the Gerovassiliou Wine Museum presents various aspects of the world history of wine-growing. At Domaine Gerovassiliou, the vineyard is cultivated with great care and enthusiasm that leads Gerovassiliou to constantly researching and experimenting with Greek and foreign varieties, both well and less known ones. New technological advances blend well with tradition throughout vine growing and vinification processes. The aim is to produce high quality wines from grapes cultivated exclusively in privately-owned vineyard; wines that carry all distinct characteristics of the specific microclimate (terroir) in Epanomi. The creation of the Wine Museum itself in combination with the various activities organized -visits, wine tastings, educational programs, seminars, publications- contribute to the diffusion of wine-growing culture.

Slovenia
We grow our grapes in a nature-friendly manner. We pick the grapes by hand, gently separate them from the stalks, and then successfully combine our knowledge, experience and tradition with the most modern technology in wine production. The results of the maturation process are wines distinguished by a beautiful harmony of freshness, soft fruity taste and the quality of each variety. The most important feature of all our wines, however, is their exceptional drinkability. Through knowledge, dedication and innovation, as well as following the goals we have set in developing our brand, we intend to become the leading producer of wine in Slovenia, while building the reputation of our brand abroad. Our wine is produced at the former Jarenina Castle, where the company also has its headquarters. In May 2007 we completed the renovation of the 200year-old building and in June 2007 opened the doors to one of the most modern wine cellars in Slovenia. The cellar offers a storage capacity of 300 thousand litres of wine, 50 thousand of which are stored in oak barrels.

Misal
Croatia
Following centuries-old wine-growing and wine-making tradition of our family, we started in the Nineties the production of natural sparkling wines in modest circumstances in the village Persuriai close by Porec. With lots of love and wish for success, gathered knowledge and necessary conditions, at the beginning the production was of limited scope with total hundred bottles of only one sort of sparkling wine. Creating the recognizable name of MISAL over the years, today we may proudly say that we are one of the largest producers of natural sparkling vines in Croatia. The annual production increased several times over, so we now produce and bottle about 40 thousand bottles of sparkling vine yearly. Endeavoring to satisfy everyone's tastes and wishes we enriched our product assortment with as many as six various natural sparkling wines.

Croatia
Our family has been tending vineyards since time immemorial. However, it was not before Vino-Hvar d.o.o. was established that we started producing our own wines: the Caric wines. Work in the vineyard is just as important to us as work in the winery. We tend about 5 ha of vineyards in a number of different areas across Vinogorje Hvar (a specially designated winegrowing area), while a minor amount of grapes is purchased from contracted growers. We grow a number of indigenous varieties, such as Plavac Mali, Bogdanjusa, Kuc, Marastina, Darnekusa and Posip. Each of our wines and their names tell a different story, from vineyard to winery.

Stobi Winery
Macedonia
Stobi Winery is located in central Macedonia, in the most famous wine regionTikvesh. About 12,000 hectares are planted in the Tikvesh wine region, which represents approximately one-third of the total vineyards area in Macedonia. As the Mediterranean climate from the south collides with the Continental climate from the north, it creates an area most remarkable for grape growing and wine production on the entire Balkan peninsula. The total annual temperature sum during the vegetation of 5300 째C - 5500 째C, the rainfall is 500-600 liters per square meter and the maximum daily temperature during July and August around 40째C. However, using modern viticultural measures and the good texture of the soil, the grapevine is constantly supplied with water, and the north winds provide natural protection against cryptogram diseases. This unique wine region has its own local, traditional varieties that are well known. Thus, the most famous grape variety is Vranec, which accounts for almost 50% of the total vineyards planted with red grapes. However, this region has proved to be an excellent breeding ground for international grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat, Riesling, Traminec and many others. The capacity of the winery is 4.5 million liters, out of which 1.2 million liters are projected for fermentation. Chardonnay 2011

Tikves Winery Macedonia Powerful wines from the land of eternal sunshine in the south of Europe We promise you that if you ever have the chance to visit Macedonia a small country in the south of Europe a few impressions will be engraved in your memory forever. The warmth of the people of this small country is like the Sun that never sets; the freshness of the food has never tasted better; and the wine will imprint its color, aroma and taste in your senses. The grapes and the wine have always been an integral part of people s lives in this region. If you ask the Macedonians to define wine, they will most probably say Tikves , alluding to the wine that has been produced in the biggest winery in SouthEastern Europe since 1885 the Tikves Winery. If the size used to be the greatest attribute of the Winery until ten years ago, today we may rightfully add the epithets such as the highest quality, the best value, the most contemporary technology that preserves the original characteristics of the grapes and transforms them into wine. In 2003, the investment group M6 became the majority owner of the Tikves Winery, initiating the period of reconstructure, followed by intensive investments into modernization of the equipment, introduction of modern technology and development of human resources. The latest addition to the portfolio is the series of terroir wines that comes because of the cooperation of the winery with Philippe Cambie s, one of the most distinguished enologists in the world, famous for producing famous wines of regional origin. The uniqueness of Tikves wines has been recognized by renowned critic Robert Parker who awarded 94 points to Bela Voda Red 2010. This evaluation opened the doors of the USA wine market, known for the harsh competition, as well as for the opportunities that open for any new, undiscovered brands and wine regions. The wine advocate gave his personal recommendation for Vranec Special Selection 2010 , produced from the local variety of Vranec, which resembles to Zinfandel. Alexandria Rose Cuvee 2011

Vracki Vinogradi
Serbia
Vrsac and its surroundings are known as viticulture area since the Roman rule. The first written data on Vrsac wine originate in 1494, when a Budim court steward paid 10,5 golden forint for the barrel of Vrsac wine intended for the Hungarian King Ladislaus. In the 19th century, Vrsac vineyards were among the biggest vineyards in Europe and stretched across 17.000 acres (10.000 ha). The significance of viticulture for Vrsac area can be identified by the fact that since 1804, vine has been an integral component of the coat of arms of the town of Vrsac. With respect to viticulture regionalization, Vrsac vineyards are located within the region of Banat and the South Banat Viticulture sub-region. They cover a great part of the slopes and bottoms of Vrsac Mountains at the altitude between 90 and 250 m, which along moderate-continental climate represents ideal conditions for vine growing. Vrsac viticulture area covers more than 2.000 ha vineyards, out of which the plantations of Vrsac vineyards cover around 1.700 ha. Total cellar capacities of “Vrsacki Vinogradi” AD amount 34,2 million litres (3.420 wagons) and they can receive the whole grape yield of Vrsac viticulture area. The “New Cellar” was built in Vrsac in 1968. It has the capacity of 2.000 wagons and has the state-of-art equipment for producing and storing wine. As an architectural solution built under one roof, it represents one of the biggest cellars in Europe. Although the state-of-art equipment was introduced, considerable quantities of wine are stored in a traditional manner in wooden barrels, which is a real delicacy for wine lovers from all over the world. Jagodinska Vinarija Serbia In 1908 a famous Jovacki (name of the region) Vineyards were established, from which in 1934 emerged Jagodina's Cellars who became famous for exporting its red wines all over Europe. In 1960 Jagodina's cellars became part of Navip, a largest state-owned winery at that time, that successfully produced, on a yearly basis, 90 wagons of grapes and about 600,000 liters of famous red wine (Ruzica, Cabarnet Sauvignon and Merlot) until the end of the last century. In 2011 Jagodina's Cellars declared bankruptcy, lost all of their property, vineyard and buildings, that later, in order to return its former glory, purchased two well known entrepreneurs from Jagodina Dusan Stojanovic and Ljubisa Milosavljevic who established a new company called Jagodinska Vinarija 1897. Today, Jagodina's Vineyards are one of the finest in Serbia and grapes that it produces are of very high quality which is best illustrated by the percentage of sugar present in the grape berries. In 2012, in the middle of the vineyard, one of the finest wineries was constructed, in which owners installed only the finest winemaking equipment purchased from well known company Bucher from France, with current capacity of over 400,000 liters of wine and with all the necessary HACCP standards.
