Psalm 95:1-6 (KJV) O COME, LET US SING UNTO THE LORD: LET US MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE TO THE ROCK OF OUR SALVATION. LET US COME BEFORE HIS PRESENCE WITH THANKSGIVING, AND MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE UNTO HIM WITH PSALMS. FOR THE LORD IS A GREAT GOD, AND A GREAT KING ABOVE ALL GODS. IN HIS HAND ARE THE DEEP PLACES OF THE EARTH: THE STRENGTH OF THE HILLS IS HIS ALSO. THE SEA IS HIS, AND HE MADE IT: AND HIS HANDS FORMED THE DRY LAND. O COME, LET US WORSHIP AND BOW DOWN:

Psalm 100 (KJV) “MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE UNTO THE LORD, ALL YE LANDS. SERVE THE LORD WITH GLADNESS: COME BEFORE HIS PRESENCE WITH SINGING. KNOW YE THAT THE LORD HE IS GOD: IT IS HE THAT HATH MADE US, AND NOT WE OURSELVES; WE ARE HIS PEOPLE, AND THE SHEEP OF HIS PASTURE. ENTER INTO HIS GATES WITH THANKSGIVING, AND INTO HIS COURTS WITH PRAISE: BE THANKFUL UNTO HIM, AND BLESS HIS NAME. FOR THE LORD IS GOOD; HIS MERCY IS EVERLASTING; AND HIS TRUTH ENDURETH TO ALL GENERATIONS.”

Psalm 107:1 (NIV) “GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD, FOR HE IS GOOD; HIS LOVE ENDURES FOREVER.

I Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV) “BE JOYFUL ALWAYS; PRAY CONTINUALLY; GIVE THANKS IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES, FOR THIS IS GOD’S WILL FOR YOU IN CHRIST JESUS.”

God's

Goodness It is probably a good thing that the Thanksgiving Holiday comes at the end of the year. Thanksgiving Day is the holiday we pause and reflect on all of our manifold blessings. By the time we get to Thanksgiving Day we also discover that the year has almost come to an end. I’m sure we can all agree that we have plenty to be thankful for. At the same time we can all agree that there were some things and some promises that we have been praying for and waiting for that has not manifested . . . yet. What can we say then to these things? Well, this time of year when we are counting our blessings, let’s consider a few things, let’s consider God’s goodness. If you think about the goodness of the Lord and all He has done for you, you realize if it had not been for the Lord on your side, where would you be? Consider this . . . it is only because of the Lord’s mercies that you are not consumed. God’s mercies are new every morning; God is faithful. God has kept you through trials and tribulations, heartaches and disappointments. God has kept you through the good and the bad. God is your keeper. Consider this . . . there is nothing too hard for God. He has supplied all of your needs. God is able to keep you from falling. God is strong and mighty; He is your shield, your buckler and your protector. God is everything you need Him to be. Consider this . . . you’ve come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord, trusting in His holy word, and He’s never failed you yet. That means no turning back and no looking back. It means keep moving forward and keep the faith. It means that you can finish the race that has been set before you.

Consider this . . . you may not know what the future will bring; but the good news is, you do know who holds your tomorrows and who holds your hand. God will never leave you or forsake you. God loves you. Consider this. . . God is awesome. Thank Him for all of His wonderful blessings. Thank Him for being such a loving and kind Father. Thank Him for His grace and His mercy. Thank Him for your life and things being as well as they are. Thank Him for friends and family. Consider this . . . there is nobody greater than our God. God gave His son’s life for us just so we could have eternal life and live with Him in eternity. God is our Savior. Happy Thanksgiving! Grace&Glory  7

Q&A Interview With

Dr. Jermaine N. Johnson G&G: Dr. Johnson, welcome back to Grace & Glory Magazine. It has been 5 years since you were last featured on Grace & Glory Magazine. It is a pleasure to talk with you again for the 10th Anniversary Celebration of Word of Life Christian Community Church. Can you believe 10 YEARS? How does it feel to have 10 years under your belt; how would you best describe these last 10 years? Dr. Johnson: Amazing…. It has been “A Decade of Divine Direction” as we have executed (by the Grace of God), the vision and mission of the Word of Life Christian Community Church. A vision and mission that we believe is a Kingdom agenda to make disciples, inspire cultures and transform communities in faith. It’s been an incredible journey to be an ambassador for Christ as we’ve strived to make their lives of people better by being a Catalyst for Life in Christ.

has been a privilege to renovate buildings that we would lease, to the current purchase of an edifice. To answer your question, in short, I’m surprised at the exceedingly, abundantly blessings beyond all I could ever ask or think according to the power that worketh in us.

G&G: Dr. Johnson, what was the turning point in your journey or that moment when you realized that God had called you to an assignment of this magnitude? Dr. Johnson: The turning point in our journey of church planting manifested itself at the Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Charlotte, North Carolina while I was working on my Doctor of Ministry degree. It was there on the campus of Gordon Conwell that God began to speak to me about planting the Word of Life Church. The Holy Spirit inspired me G&G: Dr. Johnson, looking back at to write the mission and the where you were when you started vision of the ministry, which this journey, where did you think has provided us direction it was going to lead you? Are you and clarity over the last at all surprised at where you are 10 years. The vision of the today? Word of Life Church is to be Dr. Johnson: Am I surprised? My a catalyst of transformation God, Yes, I am! When starting the and discipleship for both ministry of the Word of Life Church, believers and non-believers by I was a broken vessel, unsure of impacting countries, inspiring myself, confidence shattered, but cultures, and influencing what remained within me was a communities through the Dr. Jermaine & Elder Michelle Johnson with Daughter Zoe perpetual yes from God and to power and love of the gospel God. Q&A G&G: Dr. Johnson, as you reflect on these last 10 years over the years that have had a tremendous impact on have you ever just wanted to throw in the towel? What was my person and ministry. First, my father in ministry and the biggest risk you had to take in ministry, what was the grandfather Pastor Edward McClurkin of the First Mount result of taking that risk? Carmel Christian Community Church. Pastor McClurkin Dr. Johnson: As I reflect over the 10 years, I have my provided me with a foundation that positioned me to accept moments when I feel like I would rather be doing something my call to gospel ministry. There have been others along else. A process that comes with the calling, discerning the way that have imparted knowledge and opportunity God’s voice, the development of people, being betrayed to grow in grace. However, over the last 10 years Bishop and misunderstood. I’ve had my days where I felt like the Alfred Owens Jr of Greater Mount Calvary Holy Church of prophet Jeremiah Washington D.C and just wanted and Bishop Vaughn to walk away, but McLaughlin of overall God has The Potters House been extremely International faithful. The The purchase experience and of property and exposure these Elevation Celebration renovation at Kingdom giants 3300 Glen Avenue was a major undertaking of great have provided me has positioned me with the confidence faith, favor, and finances to make happen. At the time and the courage that the sky is the limit and that with God of purchasing 3300 Glen Avenue, the church had just all things are possible. I’m forever grateful for these men completed our capital campaign with just enough of God, who provided the opportunity to travel across resources to purchase the property and then we were hit the world, meet renowned kingdom leaders, to preach with the pandemic. Church as we knew it, would be no on national and international platforms, and instilling longer. We were now 100% virtual with a new mortgage, strategies and resources for kingdom success. a lease payment of the previous property and a $500,000 renovation that needed to be completed in less than 1 G&G: Dr. Johnson, you have pastored the Word of Life year. This was certainly a risk. I liken it to Peter getting Christian Community Church with great passion. I have out of the boat in the fourth watch of the night walking heard said that great passion does not come without great on the water to Jesus. The result of the risk has paid off pain. Is this a true statement for your journey? as we are 95% complete of the entire renovation, as well Dr. Johnson: The pain of my process has produced great as the costs associated with the process of renovation. A passion… “For I consider that the sufferings of this present process that included contractors, architects, bankers, time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which favors, etc. shall be revealed in us.” Romans 8:18. This statement … is all the way live for my life. Prior to establishing the G&G: Dr. Johnson, can you name a person who has had Word of Life Church, I was in a state of brokenness and a tremendous impact on you as a pastor, perhaps someone borderline depression, feeling as if God had forsaken me. who has been a mentor to you? How has this person I found great comfort in my theology of Christology as impacted your life? Jesus was baptized at the Jordan with the affirming words Dr. Johnson: There have been many pastors and mentors of his Father’s voice from the heavens, “This is my beloved 10   10   November November2021 2021

Q&A Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:17. And this is followed by an invitation into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.” (Matthew 4:1) The good news of the process is that the pain and the storm have an expiration date and a process that includes restoration. “Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.” Matthew 4:11. Serving the people of Word of Life has been a process of restoration and healing for me as I continue on the journey. G&G: What encourages you most as the pastor of Word of Life Christian Community Church? What would you say has brought you the greatest joy in your 10 years as pastor? Dr. Johnson: The opportunity to witness men and woman grow and develop into their Kingdom assignments. The privilege to be a part of the salvific experience as men and women have accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The hundreds of lives that we have baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. G&G: Dr. Johnson, I’m sure in 10 years you have experienced many changes in ministry; so much changed when the pandemic hit and the whole world shut down. How did you cope with this unforeseen shift in the world, particularly to the church? Dr. Johnson: We had to grow and go with the flow. The pandemic was unprecedented as it hit the world and the church by storm. We as the church adjusted to meet the demands, concerns and felt the needs of the congregation. We trained and developed our seniors for greater use of technology, we served the community with produce as we partnered with community organizations, preached a gospel of faith over fear, and were determined to stand

and live in the faith of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. G&G: What are your thoughts on the future of the church? What should the church be saying and doing now? Dr. Johnson: The future of the church is in good hands, as long as we continue to evolve and keep the message of the person and work of Jesus Christ at the center. We must invest time, patience, money, and an ear to listen to each other, our communities, and our young people as we embrace the realities of our present and our future. The pandemic challenged the church in a myriad of ways, which invited us to make adjustments and execute with precision and excellence as we strive to be ambassadors of the faith. G&G: Dr. Johnson finally, what are your hopes and expectations for Word of Life Christian Community Church in the next 10 years? Dr. Johnson: My hopes for Word of Life over the next 10 years, is that we continue to expand in the vision and mission of the church, execute the core values with excellence and grace. Serve one another with love and authenticity. My desire for Word of Life is for the sons and daughters of the ministry to plant churches throughout the world for multiple campuses to meet the needs of God’s people. My vision is to establish a Christian School from grades K-12 with a holistic-Christian curriculum of educational skills in conjunction with life and financial literacy skills. Also, to partner or establish an accredited seminary for higher learning in Christian education and provide youth services for the purpose of recreation and education. Moreover, to be a greater version of the first 10 years of ministry as we strive to be a catalyst for life by making the lives of people better through the power of the gospel and the love of Jesus Christ. SHARE THE

JOY

I'm an only child. Growing up this meant I never had to share a favorite toy, snack, bed, or the attention of my parents. It wasn’t until I had three daughters of my own that I realized, as a child, sharing isn’t easy! Three growing girls each with stuffed school backpacks sharing the backseat of my little car wasn’t a walk in the park, neither was sharing popcorn at the movie theatre, or sharing one bathroom as they became teenagers. If we’re honest, sharing isn’t much easier as adults. We want our own - to feel special. We hold onto what’s ours with an iron grip. Blame it on fear or trauma, but somewhere along the way many of us come to the conclusion that sharing equals loss. No matter how many times we hear “sharing is caring” the fact remains, sharing can feel like “less for me.” Of course, we don’t like to admit that sharing is hard for us, but for me, if you come after my ice cream or last few French fries the truth comes out real quick. Thanksgiving... the time when we intentionally gather around a table; the time when we turn to focus more on gratitude, generosity, and, you guessed it, sharing. It feels good! Who doesn’t feel better counting their blessings? And we know it’s better to give than to receive. But what about sharing? That one seems to be harder for us to carry out. We may share a little, but only when it’s convenient, easy, with people we like, and on our own terms when there’s more than enough to go around. But that’s not the point of the shared table. For the purposes of the American holiday, the original Thanksgiving table illustrates a place where diverse people come together and SHARE a meal and a moment in unity. 16   November 2021

But it wasn’t without controversy both then and now. It seems that the struggle to share is nothing new. Even before the American holiday, the Thanksgiving table existed. It was Jesus who showed us how to gather, sit, be thankful, and share. Jesus shared many tables. He shared them with just about everyone! From prostitutes and crooks, to smelly fishermen, the religious elite, and noblemen, Jesus wasn’t afraid to share his time, meals, conversation, intimacy, and wine with anyone who would come. And again, it was controversial. We hold back from sharing because we are afraid we will lose something and never get it back. What we learn from Jesus’ thanksgiving table is that all are welcome to take part. Not just those who will appreciate what is sacrificed. Not just those who will sit and behave. Not just those who will return the favor. Everyone. Jesus didn’t lose anything by sharing with those who rejected, judged, betrayed, and mocked Him. And He wasn’t oblivious to what was going on. He knew, and still He shared. In fact, sharing gave Him something. Great joy - complete joy. All throughout the New Testament, Jesus, Paul, and John all mention the idea of complete joy. Now, if you’ve read my writing before you know, I am all about more! I want more of the Lord, more time with you, more ice cream, and certainly more joy! So what is complete joy? How do we get it? Complete joy is shared joy. Each time we see the words “complete joy” it’s in reference to sharing. Jesus says, “I share this with you so that my joy may be in you and that your joy will be complete.” (John 15:11). Jesus shared more than food at a table. He told His disciples about His intimate love and bond with the Father. He gave them insight into His most personal life even knowing they would disappoint and fail Him. That took great risk! But love won over fear. There was something much greater at stake. More than just a moment, Jesus was focused on eternity. The Love of the Father has no limits and no one is excluded from sharing in the goodness. In his first letter, John shares his testimony as a witness to who Jesus is and says, “We write this to make our joy complete.” (1 John 1:4). Jesus is our joy so sharing Him gives us even more! Just like Jesus shared about his love and intimacy with the Father, when we share who Jesus is and how He’s changed our life our joy is made complete. This is not just in reference to our spiritual testimony. We share Jesus by sharing the fruit of our lives both spiritually and physically.

Season

BOWERS Paul mentions complete joy in Philippians 2 when he encourages them to let their connection with the Lord overflow into their lives and foster unity and love in their community. This meant sacrifice. “Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” (Phil 2:1-4)

Something powerful happens when we share. Bonds are made, hearts are united, and God is glorified. Even if what we offer is not appreciated or received. Sharing our time, possessions, hearts, lives, and yes even tables, actually helps to make our joy complete. I bless you as you prepare to gather and give thanks, to consider Jesus’ table and share with boldness the goodness you’ve received. You don’t have to worry about loss. When we feast at the table of the Lord there is always more. Joyfully, Season Bowers Grace&Glory  17

Facing The

It’s that time of year again. The Hallmark Christmas movies are queued up, people are shopping for Thanksgiving dinner, and the toy and gift advertisements are in full swing. All of these bring joy to many who wait with anticipation for the seasons to change and welcome the food, festivities, family, friends and fun. For some this is a difficult time because they may not be feeling thankful or joyful due to life circumstances that have left them in pain and doubting if they have the strength to make it. The loss of a loved one, unemployment, health challenges, family tension, selfdoubt and poor choices have many people struggling to be present and engage during the holidays. Loneliness is something many faced before the pandemic and now as well as some people remain cautious about gathering. With this set of circumstances, some have found themselves facing another holiday alone. The “most wonderful time of the year” as the song lyric says can also be

olidays

the most draining and depressing time for those who may not be able to rejoice. Facing the holidays requires those who may be struggling, to have a plan to get through the days and weeks to come. Reach out to others and see if they can assist in making this time more peaceful and encouraging; or you be the one to invite a newly separated, divorced or widowed person to your family gathering. Take this time to start new traditions that are meaningful, attend plays, concerts or other cultural events and give back to the community by volunteering. Getting out with others who share your values will help overcome the sadness and anxiety that you can sometimes experience during this time of year. Many churches are open this year and are gathering safely to celebrate the season. You can get through the holidays and face them with confidence, when you make plans, get out of your comfort zone, explore new traditions and connect with others. Keep Your Hands Clean Many of us were taught at a very young age the importance of washing our hands. I could not place my legs under the table for dinner if I hadn't done so. Even now when I visit my dad and Mom A, don't even think about opening the fridge without first washing your hands. Even now with the pandemic, many of us have increased hand washing by 200%. Washing our hands physically is a sign of cleansing. It is a way we remove residue, dirt and germs. When you think about it, our hands touch so many familiar and unfamiliar places in a matter of hours. It made me think, if we can be so diligent in washing our hands outwardly, we must be even more diligent in keeping our hands clean spiritually. We have crossed over into a new month as well as the fourth quarter of 2021. As 2021 ends and 2022 begins, you cannot cross over with dirty hands! You cannot cross over with unresolved issues, unforgiveness, pride, and the lack of integrity. I pray for you even now as you read this article that your hands will be clean, in every area of your life, in Jesus Name. I pray the abundance of blessings will flow freely in your life, even as this year ends, because you will not negotiate your obedience to Christ. I don't know about you, but this past month has been very challenging for me. I have had an array of emotions, and my heart was heavy. I had a situation to take place professionally, and it caused me to feel anxious, and weighted. I remember coming home and getting on my knees. Dr. Charles Stanley says we are the tallest on our knees. Let me just say, I stay tall often. The Lord shared with me something that immediately caused my countenance to shift and my heart to become lighter. He said to me, "Do not fret, neither be dismayed, your hands are clean." I want to encourage you that no matter what the situation or circumstance, if you understand it or not, if you agree or not, spiritually always keep your hands clean. Even in the most challenging situations and circumstances when your hands are clean you can sleep well at night. When your hands are clean you can move forward with assurance. When your hands are clean you can spend less energy focusing on what's behind you, but instead looking forward to what's ahead.

2. Apologize and seek forgiveness if needed, and do it quickly. One thing that will keep your hands dirty is unforgiveness and pride. Do not cross over into 2022 with matters left in pending status. If you need to ask for forgiveness, do it quickly. If your brother or sister has said or done something to offend you, follow through with having that conversation quickly. Do not brush issues under the rug. Do not run from what you need to face. Even in tough conversations God's grace is sufficient. Please hear me. Get your matters in order THIS YEAR! 3. Speak Life! The good book tells us that life and death is in the power of the tongue. Keep your hands clean by speaking life, restoration, revitalization, and rebirth. Speaking doubt and demise will keep your hands dirty. You have come too far to quit. I challenge you to neither murmur nor complain in this fourth quarter of 2021. Speak life and see the supernatural provision of God in your life! 4. Give thanks without ceasing. The good book tells us to give thanks in all things for this is the will of the Lord concerning us. Keep your hands clean by being grateful. Be grateful in your seasons of planting, in your seasons of waiting and in your seasons of harvest! Be grateful when you have much and be grateful when you have little. Express your thanksgiving by sharing with others, writing it down or saying it out loud. Stop saying, "It's always one thing after another." Instead say, "Thank you Jesus that all things are working together for my good." It is my sincere prayer that as you go through life, and as seasons change in your life, be it people, circumstances, relationships, and situations that you will always, and I mean always, keep your hands clean. Remember, if we live we belong to the Lord. If we die we belong to the Lord. Either way, we belong to the Lord. Therefore, let's reflect His love, character and principles by keeping our hands clean. Think about that every time you go to wash your hands. You are not just blessed, you are always blessed! Happy Thanksgiving!

I want to give you four ways in which you can keep your hands clean in any situation in your life. 1. Never negotiate your character and integrity. The good book tells us that we were made in His image and in His likeness. That means our actions reflect God. Your character and integrity are your lifestyle. Even when it doesn't feel good, commit that you will always do the right thing. Grace&Glory  Grace&Glory  27 27

a woman’s perspective

Recently my faith was tested. My niece who was raised more like my sister, whom I loved so dearly, was struggling with her health. She was battling cancer. It was a fight that she fought more times than one throughout the time span of her life, and through each battle she came out victorious. However, when she received this latest diagnosis nothing changed. We, as a family, had the same faith that we had before looking for nothing less than for God to show Himself to our family once again with a spectacular miracle as we trusted, prayed, stood on His word, and believed for Him to move once again on our behalf. And He did just that! But not the way we perceived. He didn’t move in the fashion that we were expected.

FAITH AND DESIRE I was talking to my husband the other day sharing with him how I needed to find an idea or topic for the November article. As we were conversing he shared with me that I should write about what’s in my heart. Typically, that’s what I do the majority of the time. I pray then I allow God to flow through me for the readers. But this time it seemed truly difficult and unsettling, because what was in my heart I didn’t want to flow through my mouth. “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.” Matthew 15:18 KJV At that time moment I was afraid to write from my heart, because my heart was hurting, sad, disappointed and broken. I didn’t want my current state to affect the reader’s. But in that moment God shared with me that it’s okay to show vulnerability. It allows people to understand that leaders hurt too.

As a family we were all looking for Mel’s healing to take place on this side of Heaven so that we could tangibly see God’s work being shown directly in front of our eyes. Nevertheless, it didn’t happen that way which is why I was feeling a certain way about writing from my heart. If I can be honest I was angry and bothered. I knew this request wasn’t going to be difficult at all for Him. I’ve witnessed Him do something so much greater before. At that moment of her death the enemy’s voice came in like a flood to cause me to move out on my anger. As I’m counseling others about the situation the enemy is speaking to me and asking me questions like, “Do you still believe Him?”; “You’re not bothered by Him?”; and “You still trust that God?” For one moment I wavered and almost spoke out in my hurt and my pain. I found myself almost being in a very remorseful state of mind. My mind was troubled because my heart was unhappy. At that moment I was reminded of a conversation that my husband and I had a while back about having faith to die. See, we are all children of God, and how unfair would it be to deny one child’s request over another. My niece’s faith and desire outweighed my faith and desire for her. God did hear His children’s cries and prayers. It just wasn’t our petition that He granted. It was hers. Her faith wanted to be healed on the other side. She knew the struggle she was facing, and her faith carried her to where she wanted to be. Even though it wasn’t our family’s desire, it was her desire. I had to find peace in that. I had to rest in that. I had to push pass my hurt and see her victory. I asked God “Why?” “What happened?” He reminded me of His Word saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from me; nevertheless not my will, but Yours, be done.” (Luke 22:42 NKJV), as Jesus prepared to suffer for us, it was the Will of the Father. I needed to give thanks even when I didn’t understand or agree. Her faith was so strong that she wanted to see the Father, and I have to be thankful, because my Father honored her request I don’t have to understand it all, I just have to understand that her faith carried her home. health matters

Let's Continue Our Discussion:

MALE BREAST CANCER October is Breast Cancer Month. Organizations take the opportunity to celebrate woman survivors and fighters and to provide public information on breast cancer diagnosis and treatments. Information on the incidence of male breast cancer is frequently omitted from these annual discussions. You may be thinking: Men don't have breasts, so how can they get breast cancer? The truth is that everyone, no matter what the age, has breast tissue. All breast tissue is susceptible to hormone changes that can stimulate abnormal cells in the breast tissue. Male breast cancer is rare. In 2021, about 2,650 men are expected to be diagnosed with the disease, and an estimated one-quarter of the men diagnosed are expected to die from breast cancer. Men are rarely screened for breast cancer. As a result, * Richard Roundtree is a breast cancer tends to be more male breast cancer survivor. advanced in men when it is first detected. Risk factors for breast in men are similar to those that can affect women. Aging, obesity, alcohol consumption, hormonal changes, and a family history of breast and other cancers are associated with the development of male breast cancer. Genetics can strongly influence the development of breast cancer in men. Men inheriting abnormal BRCA1 or BRCA2, the "breast cancer genes," have an increased risk of male breast cancer. Men with BRCA mutations can be at increased risk for other cancers, including prostate, pancreatic cancer, and certain types of skin cancer. The presence of a hard, firm lump and or drainage from the breast should be aggressively explored by the health care provider. Lumps are often misinterpreted as calcium deposits beneath the skin. Men need to be persistent in their requests for ultrasound and 30   November 2021

mammogram tests. Delays in making a positive diagnosis occur because practitioners don't suspect their male patients have breast cancer. Treatment protocols for male breast cancer include chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. Hormonal therapy and follow-up diagnostic tests are routine for several years after the initial diagnosis of cancer. Let me introduce the following male breast cancer survivor. Bret and his mother begin the Male Breast Cancer Coalition (https:// malebreastcancercoalition.org/). I served on a panel with Bret at a symposium focusing on male breast cancer. Bret found a lump behind his nipple when he was 17 years old. He was told it was a calcium deposit and not to worry about the unusual lump. Seven years passed. Bret finally asked another doctor about the lump in his breast. A sonogram led to a mammogram. He had a mastectomy to remove the nipple, breast tissue, and four lymph nodes. He underwent four rounds of chemotherapy. He is celebrating ten years of being cancer-free. Bret discovered he has a BRCA gene mutation. Several members of his extended family have experienced breast and other cancers. Bret is vigilant about his health and is dedicated to bringing male breast cancer survivors together and increasing awareness of this disorder to as many individuals as possible. The Bible tells us to be wise as serpents. Wisdom is the principal thing. Be diligent about your health. Encourage the men in your life to pay attention to their breasts. Go ahead and give Him thanks! In this season of Thanksgiving, you do not have to wait to see your blessing or answer to your prayer manifest before you offer thanksgiving to God. He promised in His word that if you delight yourself in Him, He would give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4). Adopt an “advanced appreciation” mindset which is one that, no matter what the circumstance, you can thank God in advance because you know that God can and will perfect those things that concern you (Psalm 138:8). The moment you opened your heart and mouth to pray, He was already at work on your behalf eager to bless you. This is reason enough to thank Him in advance and give Him praise. You do not have to “get it” to give Him thanks. Most of the time you do not know the outcome of your situation. Many times, you do not understand the state that you are in but your mindset matters.

Advanced appreciation allows you to be content in the state that you are in (Philippians 4:11). Advanced appreciation gives you faith in the Father to possess the blessed assurance that you can be confident knowing that all things work together for your good (Romans 8:28).

Hannah did not understand the reason she could not conceive a child (1 Samuel 1:9-28). Even in her sad state, she decided to thank God in advance for the child she hoped to be blessed with one day and promised, in return for her future blessing, to give her blessing in the form of a child right back to God (1 Samuel 1:9-28). Hannah understood the assignment of advanced appreciation. Mary, the Master’s mother, adopted an advanced appreciation mindset when she had a thankful heart and praised God in advance for blessing her to birth Jesus, the Savior of the world (Luke 1:4655). Mary’s advanced appreciation for being highly favored gives the

encouragement to others to thank God in advance because they know the result will be like Elizabeth shared with Mary, “Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill His promises to her.” (Luke 1:45) One of the greatest examples of advanced appreciation was the miracle by the Master, Jesus Christ. He gave the Father advanced appreciation and thanks when He fed the masses with five loaves of bread and two fish (Matthew 14:13-21). He thanked the Father in advance and then gave the miracle meal to the disciples for distribution to the people gathered waiting to eat. God has a miracle in the making just for you that will stem from your advanced appreciation. Take a moment to thank God in advance for the blessings He wants to bestow on you. You are bound to be blessed. Your advanced appreciation in the form of thanksgiving will be key to your victory. Elder Tracey Nicole George www.traceystrinketstotriumph.com

body basics

This is a post by OYS writer Melissa (www.organizeyourselfskinny.com)

The couch. We all love this comforting piece of furniture, especially after a long day at work or home with the kids. The couch calls to us, beckons us…Come sit on me! I can make you feel so good! The couch is like the little devil sitting on one of your shoulders. The angel on the other shoulder? Exercise! It may seem like what the devil, I mean couch, has to offer seems like the better deal, but the angel, exercise, is really the winner here. So how do you deal when the temptation of the couch calls to you? Well, you have to start by creating a routine. Once you get into a regular exercise routine, it will become a habit. The couch will still be there when you are done exercising, and your body will thank you for pushing it to work. Step 1. Pick an activity. If you are completely new to exercise, I suggest something very simple like walking. Get used to what it feels like to move your body on a regular basis, and start to notice the benefits of this. You will most likely notice that your mind is clearer and you actually have more energy, not less. It’s also very important to pick something you like doing. Exercise should not feel like punishment. It should be something you look forward to and find enjoyable. Any physical activity counts as exercise, including bike riding, swimming, gardening, dancing, and playing freeze tag with your kids. Just make it purposeful. Step 2. Set a goal. To start, set one simple, clear, realistic goal. Maybe for one person it will be to walk around the block without feeling winded. For someone else, it might be to swim five laps in a row without stopping. Another person might set a goal to walk two miles, three times a week. Start small and build up from there. When you have a clear goal, you know what your purpose is for doing the exercise. Goals also make you feel more accountable. Write the goal down and post it on your refrigerator so you see it every day. Step 3. Go slow. If you walk around the block the first day and feel like it was too easy, don’t go out the next day and expect to run three miles. Take it easy and give yourself time to build up to those more challenging workouts. If once around the block was too easy, go twice or three times; or walk once, then jog the second time.

34   November 2021

Step 4. Push yourself. This sounds contradictory to Step 3, I know, but once you have started and have gone slow for a while, it’s time to change it up so you don’t get bored and head back to that couch. If you’ve been walking for two weeks, add some jogging, or add some speedwalking intervals. Maybe now that you’ve been moving for a while, you feel more confident about walking into a gym and trying a group class. As a fitness instructor, I have to tell you that the camaraderie in a group class is motivation enough. I love being surrounded by other women of all shapes, sizes, and ages who are all there for the same reason, to be the best they can be. It is also very motivating to sign up for a 5k walk/run that benefits a charity that you find worthy. There are many races throughout the warmweather season. You truly have to experience one to feel the sense of accomplishment and purpose you get after you complete the race.

Step 5. Reward yourself. Just don’t do it with food. Make your rewards things that would be highly motivating for you. Maybe put money in a jar every time you exercise to save up for a vacation next year. If you need more immediate gratification, reward yourself weekly with a new song download, or monthly with a new workout outfit. I also strongly suggest tracking your fitness achievements on an app like My Fitness Pal. The accountability this app provides is important for a former couch potato!
