Books

Get in the mood for Autumn by reading these books!

Phantom of the Opera

The Light Between Oceans

By Gaston Leroux

By M.L. Stedman

Chr i s t i ne Da a é wa s raised in the Paris Opera House because of her father’s death. Christine’s father promised her that an angel of music would guide her. Years later, she hears a voice that begins to teach her how to sing beautifully. Then, Christine’s childhood friend comes to the Opera House, sees her singing and fell in love with her once again. The phantom becomes jealous, and one day, Christine disappears! Would the phantom fall in love or cause more trouble?

Australia, 1926. Tom Sherbourne brings his loving wife, Isabel, back with him to his home, a lighthouse that is isolated in the middle of the sea and is half a day’s travel to the coast. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, his wife Isabel hears a baby’s cry in their lighthouse. She goes out and sees a boat washed up on the shore. There was a dead man and a baby inside. Being the meticulous lighthouse keeper Tom was, he wanted to report the man and the baby immediately. However, his wife decided to take the baby in as their own. When the baby was 2, Tom and Isabel returns to the coast, and their next choice makes one of them devastated.

There is also a movie version if you want to skip the book. This is a romantic book, but it gives you the chills at the same time. I would highly recommend this book.

Macbeth By William Shakespeare

A Scottish general, Macbeth, receives a prophecy from 3 witches that he would become the King of Scotland. Due to his greed of power and his wife's support , he then murdered the current king, King Duncan, and took the throne. After the murder, Macbeth feels guilty and paranoid. This book can be disturbing, but it also shows you the horrible things people would do due to greed and other things. It is a very well written book. 03 | THE HOWL | November 2017

Review by: Gabe Rating: 5/5 The Light Between Oceans is an incredibly moving novel about what happens when good people make bad decisions. Through a mixture of misplaced intentions and unsupported superstition, they decide to raise the child as their own -- deciding not to inform the authorities of the child's existence.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

The Comet Seekers

By Charles M. Schulz

By Helen Sedgwick

Charlie Brown has to prepare an entire Thanksgiving meal before time runs out. The rest of the gang will also join in the rest of the fun. This classic television show is the perfect way to spend Thanksgiving.

Róisín and François met in the snowy grounds of Antarctica. Róisín grew up in an Irish village with the greatest thirst of knowledge for science and every other thing about the world outside her village. François was raised by a beautiful mother who seeks new worlds but could not ignore her past. Their story is full of love, hope, and heartbreak, shows us how strangers can be connected, and how the world can be as lonely and beautiful as comets itself.

Charlie Brown is by far the most adorable television show I’ve ever seen. The best part of the show is, of course, Snoopy (Charlie’s dog) and Woodstock (Snoopy’s friend).

Review by: Will Byrnes Rating: 5/5 Róisín, an Irish astrophysicist, and François, a French chef, both working at a research station, are becoming involved. They share a wanderlust and a deep attachment to people and places continents away: she to her beloved cousin, Liam and he to his unusual mother, Severine. But each feels a connection to the other that seems to have been written in the stars.

Places to Eat in Siam (Square)

By Pornnapa Huang (Coco)

Hello. I’m back…… with restaurant suggestions. I’m pretty sure everyone in TCIS goes to Siam every now and then, especially for people who have tutors in Siam Square. I have limited knowledge about Bangkok since I don’t live there, but I’m pretty sure I can recommend some great places to eat and give my opinions about them.

Allblue Seafood Where is it: 2nd Floor at Siam Square One Amazing Thailand: Thai food that’s easy to eat and not expensive in Siam. Menu items (The Most Delicious Pad Thai) have cool names, and the decoration is really nice. The place is very simplistic, so there’s a very chill atmosphere as well.

05 | THE HOWL | November 2017

FACT Coffee Where is it: Across the Chulabook building, behind the block that’s across Siam Square One Coffee and Chill: You can collect stamps and get a large free drink once you have 10 stamps. The cheapest drinks (hot chocolate, hot coffee) are 40 baht → most expensive drinks (Italian sodas, pastel drinks) are around 150 baht. A really huge cafe with 3 floors (Wi-Fi doesn’t work though ☹ .)

Yoogane Chicken Galbi Where is it: Across Siam Square One/ Hello Kitty House Saranghae Oppa (lol): They have student discounts up to 10-20%, I believe. There’s always K-Pop music and K-Drama OSTs to listen in the restaurant. You get to pick as much side dishes (kimchi, fermented radish) as you want and choose what to put in your dak-galbi (aka stir-fry chicken with vegetables and noodles/rice.) 06 | THE HOWL | November 2017

Cafe Pla

Where is it: At the bottom entrance of Siam Center from the path between Siam Center and Paragon New Cafe in Town: I ordered a non-spicy yellow curry, and it was actually not spicy and delicious as well. There are all kinds of fusion cuisines, including American fried chicken and waes, calamari, and dumpling cake. The place is also very easy to spot which is great for people who have trouble getting around (such as me.)

November Horoscopes

By Ploynapas Petjiravut (Pear)

Aries

Aries, this is your month to achieve all the goals you’ve set for yourself! Once you’ve achieved all the goals you have, you will be able to move towards all the things you’d like to conquer. Ooh, and it looks like you’re in for a very romantic 6th, 7th, and the 8th of November — but be aware, you’re about to get very emotional on the 14th and 15th. You really need to get in touch with those emotions you buried… if you want to live your life to the fullest, that is. Make sure you're thinking of others too because the 21st and the 22nd will bring you conflicts. Looks like you’re in one heck of a month, Aries! Well, put on your seatbelts and enjoy the ride!

Taurus

Taurus, this is your month to prove to everyone what you can really do. You already have the steady perseverance and are moving in an upward direction. At this moment, Saturn, the planet of success, sits in a perfect alignment and in this month — you will be rewarded for your efforts. The things you tried out the first time might not look too great for you; however, keep going and don’t give up. Such strong patience and conviction will not go unseen. 08 | THE HOWL | November 2017

You are attracted to guys/ girls with intelligence this month. Someone who is witty and lively and makes you laugh definitely has a chance to steal your heart. The best day for romance is on the 23rd when you feel like you have an edge over everyone, and you might feel as if there is nothing stopping you from going one step further. You may feel rather tired on the 9th of the month, but if you keep your chin up, you will be in for a surprise… the good kind.

Gemini

Relationships are essential this month; you stand to get the best from everyone you know. You are looking for a partner who has a wide vision of the world. You want someone who has travelled, read, and puts all your clever observations into a bigger picture — this is exactly who you can expect to attract. Venus, the planet of love, does marvellous things for you from the 10th and onwards. You will be able to handle any personal issues being thrown at you. You like to keep things in balance; you don’t let your work life overtake your social life. The 24th is a magnificent moment for you. You will have the energy, looks, drive, and charisma that shines and sets you apart. If possible, you should conduct all your businesses and important duties that involve talking or persuading people on this date.

09 | THE HOWL | November 2017

Cancer

You are in a rush this month; you are determined to demonstrate what you are capable of. This month will differentiate you from other months because you are not your usual shy and sensitive self. You want to stand out and stand up for yourself, because you feel like you’ve been ignored; it may be in classrooms, where you are passionate and impulsive. You want to make a statement in your relationships, maybe going with someone completely out of character or against your usual type. Even though you’re tempted when someone offers you or shows you great interest, it would be better if you wait for a little. From the 11th onward, your mind is in great shape, and you should find your academic work easier in this period. The time you spent with your nose in between books will be well rewarded; you will have a precise idea of how to use the information you are studying.

Leo Leo, this is a great time for you to gather your close friends and come up with something creative. You have a dreamy, imaginative frame of mind and an idealistic attitude towards your loved ones; this makes you popular, but be careful, you have to make sure you are relating to who is really there and not just who you believe to be there! It is easy to give some people wonderful qualities that they may or may not actually possess.

10 | THE HOWL | November 2017

A good way to deal with this is to share ideas and combine your talents. You are more than capable of coming up with something big in art or fashion; it allows you to have something in common: a sense of shared purpose together. Instead of feeling competitive with others, you welcome other people’s ideas and opinions, which all add on into something even more special. On the 9th and onwards, you will be able to take the center of the stage and people around you will help you achieve your aims. The full moon on the 24th will be vital to your friendships, another perfect moment to mix and make the most of your contacts.

Virgo

Your mind on this month is set for work and the future. Friends view you as a serious person, you don’t have the time to be slacking off or doing unnecessary things. If you’re studying, the books will take up loads of your time and you will be absolutely focused on getting outstanding results. Your sign demands you to take a longer view and get things 100% right, and it does not allow you to mess up. NOTHING is gained by taking shortcuts. All this effort is doomed to make you tired, the important thing now is to pace yourself. Remember that you’re not a superhero, you can’t do everything at once. You need to remind yourself to take it easy and relax.

11 | THE HOWL | November 2017

You have mountain high expectations and great ambitions for yourself, but anything worth doing is also worth taking time over, also, rest whenever you need to.

Libra

This month makes you especially charming, diplomatic and ‘in love with love’. Flirting and romantic games have never been so much fun! Libras, you will be luxuriating in the company of friends and admirers— that is your idea of a good time anyway. Your prospects are especially outstanding through November. You put effort in your wardrobe, and it will bring good results; however, you already have a special aura that defies any attempt to copy or steal other ideas. It’s just in your nature that your inner glow make you more attractive and it lets you know exactly how to handle people. The full moon on the 24th is a great time for you to expand your horizons and try new things. The 26th will be a great day for making an effort for someone else that pays off for you in the long run. Bring out that charm!

Scorpio

You are very fixed and determined and don’t like to change position on things when you have made up your mind; you want everyone to know exactly where you stand.

12 | THE HOWL | November 2017

Nobody can say that you are not committed, but there are times when it pays to be flexible. On the 14th you might have to think again and reconsider your options. Your energy will be coming in odd bursts and success will be depending on whether you are in the right mood or not. Any project on creative tasks has to be rethought and possibly restarted in the light of new information shining through the clouds. The 9th — take this moment to look ahead if there are any suggestions that your artistic aims need a different approach, then try again. Keep trying, Scorpios. Don’t give up!!

Sagittarius Many offers will be thrown at you and you would want to see them through; you will be in a very lucky position, make sure to make the most out of it. There will be a greater sense of possibility around you, more now than you can remember; the future is bright, but you can make it even more sparkling than by following up in a practical way when you hear new exciting things.

13 | THE HOWL | November 2017

If someone makes you an offer, always ask for more-- whatever they offers is destined for you and nothing is to be lost by being more ambitious. If you have found a topic or subject that suits you, something that ignites your imagination, then stick with it and you will do fantastically well. You will be optimistic and lucky this month, you have to keep up with it while it’s here. By Wednesday the 14th, your plans will change as you realise an ambition takes longer to fulfill than you first thought, but you wouldn’t be worry about it because it is only temporary; change comes anyway and you can make the differences on your own terms.

Capricorn You are a leader who likes taking the responsibility of being the main person in charge. This is where you work best and people are happy to leave you to do it because they trust you, but sometimes, you have to share the power and credit — don’t forget that. Your relationship for the whole month will have a sense of competition in your affairs. You can cooperate and keep your cool, but someone will be provocative and push you to the limit. They will want a reaction out of you. You have to find a way of being able to work peacefully together, or there will be an eruption where all pent-up feeling flows over like a broken dam. By the 14th, the situations will turn around and perhaps it will be you who becomes very demanding: you expect commitment and for people to be with you on your journey. This is the best time for you to get together and do more as a partner than you can ever do as one. 14 | THE HOWL | November 2017

Aquarius Friday the 9th will be the easiest to deal with everyone and know exactly how to be and act. Sometimes it’s hard to juggle your commitments you have to focus on your academic duties or work before you are able to go on with your social life. However, with Venus in the prime spot, you want to be around friends, and have your relaxed and charming attitude that will draw people towards you! Also on the 9th — the new beginning, adding extra emotional spice to your affairs. You have an ambitious attitude and giving someone good understand is an excellent way of getting ahead; be sure to be sympathetic when you have the chance. You have bright ideas that shine brighter than a diamond; don’t be afraid to speak up with your opinions, people will notice you and embrace your ideas and take notice of your potential. Later in the month on the 24th, it is the time for you to dress up and celebrate the new you! The pressure of recent time has vanished and you can start treating yourself now!

Pisces

There are tons and tons of good luck surrounding you this month! By the 11th, you will be thinking clearly through the mist and your academic work will appear like you are peeling a banana: you will go through it with ease. 15 | THE HOWL | November 2017

If there is a subject you have been struggling with, worry not! You will feel amazing how much lighter and better you feel once you are thinking clearly. You are in a place where you want to make a good impression and go against the expectations your peers have of you. If you usually dress quietly and keep things understated, this is the time to rip out your inner rockstar and dye your hair green and wear something totally outrageous (well not literally, but if you want to, by all means, rock it!) You will be making an impact and it will emphasize your individual talents and quirks. The 24th will be all about that romantic vibes. If you’re happily taken then your relationship will be at its all time high, but if you’re single, then get ready: that is about to change. đ&#x;‘€ â?¤

Loy Krathong V.S. Thanksgiving

By Yu-Lou Wei (Maggie)

Two major holidays is coming in November: Loy Krathong and Thanksgiving! Whether you are more familiar with one or the other, the article will give you the interesting and important facts for each. There is something for everyone, so let’s get into it.

Loy Krathong Loy Krathong is one of largest traditional festivals in Thailand. The word “loy” translates to float, while krathong is a Thai artifact made out of leaves (see picture.) The celebration of Loy Krathong then means the festival where people gather around major or minor rivers to float their krathongs. Krathongs were originally made from a slice of the banana tree trunk, and floating the krathongs symbolize relinquishing one’s anger, hatred, bad luck and negative thoughts as them drift afar and disappear. Fingernails and hair are also placed inside the krathongs to represent the defilements.

17 | THE HOWL | November 2017

Nowadays, apart from practicing the fascinating traditions of Loy Krathong, the aesthetic aspect of krathongs is also celebrated. Competition to make the best and grandest krathongs are held. However, the aftermath of the Loy Krathong festival is now being addressed. Last year, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration cleaned more than 6 tonnes of garbage from the waterways of Bangkok. Styrofoam krathongs will be banned for this year’s Loy Krathong as well. While enjoying the festival, be aware of the type of krathongs you buy. Take for example, my favorite type of krathong - the biodegradable bread krathong - that is both biodegradable, good for the fish, and is literally FOOD!

Thanksgiving As TCIS students, we learned about the history of Thanksgiving ever since lower school. Native Americans lending a hand to the pilgrims, not only saving them from yet another horrible winter, but giving them the tools to survive and thrive on their own from growing crops. The first successful harvest resulted in the caring, peaceful, yummy Thanksgiving that we have today. This lead me to this question: what are some of the NEW traditions in Thanksgiving that we might not have learned of? 18 | THE HOWL | November 2017

Number one, football. No, not soccer. American football. American football is in many ways associated with Thanksgivings Day in American culture. After or during the scrumptious Thanksgiving meal of turkey, stuffing, gravy, sweet potato, and pies, many families gather around the couch and watch the NFL. Number two, the Turkey Pardon. This is a really cute tradition that was cemented after President George H.W. Bush. Every year, the President of the United States will pardon a turkey from its “more likely than not” death, allowing the turkey to live the rest of its life in a farm!

Interview with Regency

By Taurak Uppaputthangkul (Pink)

What is your name, and how old are you? My name is Vorravalan Leechinnaphat. I am 15 years old. What are your greatest accomplishments? I think my greatest accomplishment by far was getting to participate in the 2017 SEA games. Any upcoming events? My next event is “2017 Australian Open Championships (8 to 10 Dec 2017.) How do you prepare for competitions? Practice and train everyday. Work hard and always put on a positive attitude.

21 | THE HOWL | November 2017

What do you think you need to work harder on? My endurance. All athletes must master this skill especially for this sport in order to finish in the least amount of time possible. What inspired you to skate, and who is your role model / favorite skater? I was inspired by Yuna Kim. She is the first female skater to win the Olympic Games and World Championships. P’Sang or Teerasak Boonpok is my idol in short track speed skating. He was the one that taught me the technique in short track position and how to move faster. Are there times when you need to act quickly or make decisions? I have to concentrate extremely well during the match since we wouldn’t know what the other competitors are thinking; we would have to act fast. Have you had any major injuries? I have hurt my knees during figure skating. I fell many, many times, and my knees hurt a lot. How do you handle stress and manage your time? I try to do something that doesn't make me feel stressed like drawing or listening to music. How does the school support you? They supported me a lot. When I’m not in school, my teachers would assign work in google classroom, and if I don’t understand something, I can always ask the teachers for help.

21 | THE HOWL | November 2017

Are there any special diets required? Not for this sport. We could just eat anything since we need the energy to skate. Do you enjoy skating alone or in groups? I enjoy skating in groups because I am happy when I skate with my friends. We would always help and support each other. I learn a lot by working with many dierent people as well.
