President’s Message

Ihope everyone has had a great summer with a little rest and relaxation. As we all are jumping into a busy fall season, our Association is doing the same. As you will see in this issue, we have numerous meetings and events over the next four months, as well as opportunities for member involvement.

Our Association continues to focus on providing benefits and services that are relevant for our members and the building industry. From marketing and networking events…consumer events showcasing new construction and professional remodeling…continuing education and professional development…community service…member savings programs…and advocacy which may be one of the most important services we provide but the least understood.

We recognize that many of our members are unable to participate in meetings and events due to work and family schedules…however know that is only a small portion of the value that your membership investment provides.

ADVOCACY – Some people think of this just as lobbying – however it’s so much more than lobbying. We have industry professionals working and advocating on our behalf every day on the local, state and national level…fighting against unfair regulatory restrictions, clarifying inspections interpretations, and looking for innovative solutions to recurring industry problems.

Our local government affairs arm – the Triad Real Estate Building Industry Coalition (TREBIC) – works with local municipalities and elected officials throughout the Triad addressing issues that are impacting our members. They are an invaluable resource that we have…along with their counterparts in Raleigh and Washington. This is your three-in-one membership dues at work.

CREDIBILITY – Being listed on our website as a member of the Greensboro Builders Association – allows potential customers and clients to know that your business is professional and legitimate – one that supports its trade association and community. We encourage you to promote that you are a member on your website and social media pages to set yourself apart.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT – The supply and demand for skilled labor is exponentially increasing each year due to the aging population of our skilled workforce…coupled with the limited number of young adults interested in pursuing construction careers. As an association, this has been a priority for years and continues today as one of our most important initiatives.

We are in the process of developing a Construction Careers Scholarship Endowment Fund with the goal of providing annual financial support and scholarships for students and adults to obtain the skilled training needed to support our industry. The projected industry growth and opportunities for qualified individuals to make a very good living are unmatched. We have personal success stories to tell and need everyone helping us. We encourage you to join our Construction Careers planning team as we focus on developing a scholarship program that supports us all in the years ahead.

Our Association provides both tangible and intangible benefits. If you have questions or suggestions for additional benefits we could provide, reach out to us.

In the meantime, I hope to see you this fall at one of our upcoming events or planning team meetings. The more members that are involved…the stronger our Association becomes.

Involvement Opportunities

s a volunteer-driven membership association…we need your participation to help us grow and expand the programs, benefits and services we provide. We encourage you to get involved with one of our planning teams… as well as attend upcoming membership meetings and special events. As an association, we become stronger with your participation. Below are a few areas for consideration.

Construction Careers

Chairs: Will Yearns, Granville Homes

Kylind Services

Building greater awareness and interest in construction careers remains a top priority for our association. There are numerous ways to be involved…from school and jobsite visits with students… to serving on our newly forming Scholarship and Endowment committees. We are in the process of forming an annual scholarship program to provide opportunities for students and others to obtain the skilled trades training they need.

Our Scholarship & Endowment committees will be researching and developing this program over the next 6-8 months with the goal of awarding scholarships next spring. Join us for our kickoff meeting of this scholarship initiative on Thursday, September 7 at 12 noon for a working lunch meeting…RSVP on the website.

Casino Night

As a designated fundraiser and official kickoff for our Construction Careers Scholarship Endowment fund, we are planning our inaugural Construction Careers Casino Night to be held on Thursday, October 26 at Starmount Forest Country Club. Blackjack, Roulette, Craps and Poker tables…with all proceeds from sponsorships and ticket sales supporting the Endowment fund. We need volunteers to help us plan this fun and exciting event. Sign up on the website for our planning team.

Associates Council

Chair: Rebecca Lenz, Lenz Designs

September is Associate Member Appreciation Month…join us for First Wednesday on September 6 as we celebrate our associate members. Planning is underway for our annual Associates Expo / Builder Appreciation Night to be held November 16…exhibitor registration will open in September.

Membership Advisory Team

Chairs: Tom Hall, Windsor Homes

Sal Cagno, Budget Blinds

Our membership team serves as advisors for all things membership...from being Ambassadors for our association… to volunteering to help with membership meetings and special events such as our annual golf and skeet tournaments. This group is committed to helping members find ways to connect and get involved. It’s a great way to meet other members throughout the year. Meetings are held quarterly…typically prior to our First Wednesday Member Connections. Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 6 at 3:30 pm…join us.

Young Professionals Network (YPN)

Chairs: Brittni Cooke, Movement Mortgage

David Richardson, Pinnacle Bank

Join our YPN group for networking and educational programs. New this year, our YPN is sponsoring a social media workshop series – Let’s Get Social – designed as an interactive social media training session – open to all members. Thus far we have focused on Facebook and Instagram…learning how to gain greater reach with posts and reels. Upcoming sessions are scheduled as “lunch & learn”s on the last Tuesday of the month…August 29 - September 26 - October 31 from 12 noon – 1:30 pm …focusing on topics of interest determined at each meeting, such as the emerging use of ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence / chatbot app. Mark these dates on your calendar and register in advance on the website.

Remodelers Council

Chair: Cathi Roberts, Convergence

If you are involved in any form of residential renovations and remodeling…as contractors, suppliers, or service providers… you are encouraged to participate in our quarterly Remodelers Council meetings. We have a brainstorming meeting scheduled for August 30 with the Raleigh-Wake County Remodelers Council to explore new ideas that we could implement within our Council.
