“ With the Eclipse lamp, I overcame the trauma of overpriced design. The lamp was ready a long time before it was produced. I had the concept, but I decided to release it only when the price was right. Pieces of design must be accessible. It is not relevant to have a project that only half dozen people can buy. We need popular objects. One of my friends, the famous jeweller Antonio Bernardo, said the Eclipse was a victory because I was proving that something beautiful and good could also be cheap. ”

designed by Flávio de Carvalho

This scheming and attractive lamp is the original Maurício Klabin’s model, which is part of the Museum of Modern Art of New York’s permanent collection. Manufactured from a single plastic band rolled up on it, the structure can be manipulated to change the form and the orientation of the light. The metal arches are equipped with small plastic parts making possible to uphold the lamp in various positions. The Eclipse lamp is delivered in the original Maurício Klabin’s packaging, similar to a “pizza box”.

Materials: Frame: black painted carbon steel / plain bar - 14mm diameter Leather cover: full grain leather - vege-tanned - semi-aniline tanning Dimensions: (w) 78cm x (d) 70cm x (h) 81cm

Deemed by Le Corbusier as a «romantic revolutionary», Flávio de Carvalho was a man of many skills who got involved in an innovative and provocative way in many artistic fields and particularly in design and architecture areas. His concepts of design and architecture are moved principally by the imagination and correspond to the new forms of living and thinking. For this man recognized today as one of the Brazilian modern architecture precursors, interior design is as important as architecture.

Within the framework of his main project, the Capuava ranch (1939), he designed most of its furniture, among them the famous FDC1 armchair created in the 50’s. The shape of this armchair is impressive by its graphic and sculptural aspects. Tribal mask or wink to sadomasochism, this noteworthy piece was at that time very avantgardist and remains very modern.

Designed in 1957 by Paulo Mendes da Rocha, the Paulistano armchair was, for many years part of the lounges of the famous Athletic Club of S達o Paulo. The constructivist concept of the structure, made up from a single bended bar of steel, and its cover, made up of leather or cotton, procure to this armchair an aesthetic lightness and an incomparable comfort. The Paulistano armchair emerges from the past to show that the purity and the elegance of its lines are timeless: a masterpiece.

Developed in a narrow relationship with Paulo Mendes da Rocha himself, the Paulistano armchair is one of the two available pieces of furniture created by the 2006 Architecture Pritzker Prize laureate. Until now this armchair was accessible to only collectors, Objekto, the exclusive worldwide fully licensed manufacturer of the architect, brings to all this major masterpiece of the 20th century. Introduced in December 2007 in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art of New York (MoMA) the Paulistano joined the most iconic pieces of design.

GAIVOTA

KAEKO

(rocking-chair)

The emblematic part of Renaud Bonzon’s work is surely the rocking-chair «Gaivota», probably the most rewarded creation in Brazil, combining at the same time aestheticism and ergonomics. The curved forms of both seat and back were defined by Renaud Bonzon, as he was sat in deep snow during a stay in French Alps and had a look at his bodyprint after standing up. Keeping ergonomics in mind, Renaud wanted to reproduce this form. He paid a special attention to both dimensions and balance making this rocking chair

very comfortable whatever the user size. For the sake of environment he chose the plywood manufacturing process in order to give value to wood trimmings. Furthermore this process allowing the creation of large curves, Renaud took advantage of this property to introduce the movement in his creation. The design of the rockingchair, its sinuous curves, irrevocably reminds the movement even statically represented on a picture. Elegance and comfort characterize the Gaivota.

Materials: Base: polished stainless steel or black painted carbon steel Glass top: 10 mm tempered glass Dimensions: (h) 33cm - (Ø) 110cm

Rafic Farah first took interest in creating furniture after designing Doctor Kaeco’s practice. He then decided to continue designing and manufacturing objects and furniture, mostly lamps and this coffee table in 1989, for his clients and friends. Doctor Kaeco is a tall woman with deep black hair of Japanese descent. She is characterized by her natural elegance, her optimism and her determination.

The graphic structure of this object is the reflection of her sophisticated and refined appearance: a Chinese ink calligraphy on a rice paper. The Kaeko coffee table is a perfect illustration of Rafic Farah’s conception of design: simple and sophisticated.

TRIBO

TRIBO

(bar stackable stool)

designed by Ilse Lang

Pieces of furniture created by Ilse Lang are particularly noteworthy in the way that they always combine aestheticism and function. Tribo stool is surely one of the most beautiful examples. The slots distributed all around the circumference of this very comfortable round and widened seat give to this creation a very contemporary character. These slots also enable to stack the stools the ones on the others. A shape linked with a specific use: here stacking. To design this creation, she took as a starting point the traditional /8/

PMR

(chaise lounge)

designed by Paulo Mendes da Rocha

« In the middle of the 80’s I visited the spring manufacturer Indústrias de Molas Sueden in São Paulo. A powerful factory of cold bended steel springs bound as well to locomotive as to delicate motor mechanisms. There I saw 25 cm wide steel coils as thin as a paper sheet. I immediately thought of the idea of a human body stretched out on this thin flexible sheet like floating over the ground (Henry Moore!?).

To reach the width I needed I put together two sheets while leaving an empty and longitudinal space between these in order to release the spinal column and to allow the body to relax on the muscles. This space also enabled me to fix a small cylindrical cushion for the neck. The transverse bars, which link the two steel sheets, were strategically distributed all over the length of

seat in order to enable three different inclinations. I did not make any particular research to achieve it. This idea was born from the continuation of the Paulistano armchair concept. An idea focused on steel flexibility properties. » Paulo Mendes da Rocha December 2009

Created in 2003, the Pelicano is the last creation of the French designer Michel Arnoult, one of the fathers of the Ready-To-Assemble furniture (RTA) and the flat packaging in the 50’s. This piece is surely one of the best illustrations of his humanistic vision of design and its contributions to modern world. The elegance underlined by both simple and modern lines, the quality of materials, the great care paid to the manufacturing and finishing processes, inspire comfort and beauty to this iconic

piece of furniture available in two versions : armchair and rocking-chair. The ingenious cover fixing system, enabling the body suspension makes the seating position very comfortable. Combined with the smoothly swing of the rocker you almost feel like in a hammock. At 81 years old Michel Arnoult receives for his Pelicano armchair the Prize of the Museo da Casa Brasileira, showing the new generation of designers that his concept is still alive and never ceased to be topical in our global and competitive world.

Assembly required Materials: Base: walnut stained beechwood Glass top: 12 mm tempered glass Dimensions: (h) 51cm - (d) 70cm

This table was recently discovered at a flea market in Parma, Italy. With this creation, this unknown creator leaves a trace of the artistic trail explored by designers from the 50’s. The simplicity of the lines doesn’t take anything away from this intriguing and complex 3 pieces assemblage and refers us directly to the moebius ribbon created in 1858 by the German mathematician August Ferdinand Möbius, ribbon with no end portrayed numerous times in Escher’s work.

(coffee table)

Reminiscence of the past, the Moebius table is a classic. It blends rhythmic forms and an evident practicality.

“Its conceptual contents deeply marked the history of modern art. Its substance crossed over the time and was transformed into an object representing the essential values of the contemporary history. The mobile represents the vocation of the man to defy gravity. It symbolizes some opposite forces which would meet to break the balance, to fight against inertia. The mobile is a player; it induces smile and joy. It tenderly confronts us with our own evolution, with the various phases of our lives.

It is impossible for us to be indifferent to its beauty, its lightness, its emotions caused by its magic. The mobile is a poetry made of material. Creating mobiles is a permanent homage to the sculptor Alexander Calder, great artist engineer, and to his inexhaustible talent. Creating mobiles is to remember the astonishment of Duchamp and the joy of Miró. The mobile is a metaphor for the day to day. It is a lesson about the «impermanency» of our environment, something which we must remember”. Manuel Corullon

Disco (lamp shade) Initially called by its creator air-balloon (balão) and rebaptized a few months later by the public “Frisbee” (disco voador), the Disco lamp is the result of a combination of several concepts: lightness, retractibility, timelessness, fun and ecology. The Disco lamp shade is manufactured from true Washi (Japanese kozo fibres paper), this noble material provides a silky lightness to that floating form.

RAFIC FARAH

Designer, architect, artistic director, graphic designer, photographer (1948) - Brazil

Rafic Farah says about himself that he was particularly influenced by the Mediterranean artists and that he chose to design by chance. At the end of the 80’s, Rafic Farah really launched into the design of objects and furniture. One of his best creations is, without doubt, the coffee table initially designed for Doctor Kaeco. His creations are uncluttered, almost ethereal, and made of simple lines.

sincere and daring, imaginative and unexpected and always leaves an important place to the social dimension in his art. The architect is a Man who carries a sincere interest in humankind, who has the role to create the most adequate and viable habitat possible. In that sense, Paulo Mendes da Rocha is a modernist; nothing distracts him from his vision for a better future. In 2006, Paulo Mendes da Rocha is awarded for his all carrier by the Pritzker Prize of Architecture. • Pritzker Prize of Architecture - 2006 • Mies Van der Rohe Award for Latin America - 2000 • Museo da Casa Brasileira Award 1987 • Permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA), Architecture and Design department.

RENAUD BONZON PAULO MENDES DA ROCHA Architect, designer (1928) - Victória - Brazil

-

Paulo Mendes da Rocha is an international reference of the Brazilian architecture. Influenced at his beginning by his elders Oscar Niemeyer, Affonso Eduardo Reidy and the «brutalist» João Vilanova Artigas, he is part of those who knew, in their practice, to create an international style while keeping well anchored the Brazilian spirit. His work is assimilated to the «São Paulo’s brutalist architecture school», a movement of creators focused on forms, simple materials and on a certain ethic. A brutalism which refers to the rough concrete. He creates works at the same time /18/

Designer (1954) - France

-

Renaud Bonzon’s work is mostly based on wood work, particularly on the technique of the laminated. Recently he explored the fields of iron and aluminium. The emblematic creation of Reno Bonzon is surely the rocking chair «Gaivota», probably the object most rewarded in Brazil, combining aestheticism, comfort and ergonomics. The «Galho» lamp, «twig» in English, was selected to be part of the International Design Book 2000 by Ingo Maurer. • Brazilian Biennale of Design’s selection - 1990 • Museo da Casa Brasileira Award 1988 • MOVESP Prize - 1988

FLÁVIO DE CARVALHO

Painter, architect, writer, theatre director, designer, sculptor, engineer (1899-1973) - Brazil

-

Flávio de Carvalho was one of the main artists of the Brazilian modern movement. Deemed by Le Corbusier as a «romantic revolutionary», Flávio de Carvalho was a man of many skills who got involved in an innovative and provocative way in artistic fields as different as painting, architecture, writing, theatre, design or sculpture. He is recognized today as a visionary who bequeathed us a rich and eclectic work. Irreverent and provocative cultural leader, he is considered as a precursor of multimedia Arts. The image of this provocative and disrespectful man is particularly related to his iconoclasts «performances» carried out as well on the artistic as behavioral levels. He is today regarded as one of the precursors of the 60’s « Happenings » in the United States. But before everything, Flávio de Carvalho is a worldwide renowned painter. His style is classified as expressionist with surrealist and fauvists looks. His paintings are parts of the collections of the world most important museums of modern art.

MICHEL ARNOULT

Designer, architect (1922-2005) - Paris - France

-

Born in Paris and adoptive Brazilian, Michel Arnoult is recognized as one of the fathers of both Ready-To-Assemble furniture (RTA) and flat packaging. He always ardently defended the democratization of design at the expense of any creative vanity. From 1952 he starts designing simple furniture and focuses its researches on the RTA furniture concept. He particularly takes an interest in production optimization using standard parts, common to various furniture, and volumes optimization using flatpacks. This approach is regarded as the premises of the current Cash & Carry. He also focuses on a concept he calls the «firm comfort»: a well-studied design combined with a very great quality of manufacturing bring comfort to furniture only made of wood. • Roberto Simonsen Prize of Industrial Design - 1964 • Museo da Casa brasileira Award 2003

MANUEL CORULLON Designer, artist, mechanical engineer

(1950) Buenos Aires - Argentina

-

The work of Manuel Corullon has two convergent aspects. He creates his own objects and is also interested in the second

reading of former objects, often forgotten, sometimes reduced to a simple draft. His work is preceded by historical, social and cultural researches. He endeavours to synthesize the object by reconciling the function, the aestheticism and ingeniousness, without forgetting the human dimension and the adequacy of the object within its current environment. It is that way that he creates his series of mobiles.

MAURÍCIO KLABIN

Designer, photographer and mechanical engineer (1952-2000) - Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

-

Maurício Klabin’s main concern was to inspire a feeling of wellbeing and protection; more precisely, to give the sensation that one can feel when giving a hug. He chose to create objects which contain and cocoon. His work is characterized by the absence of salient angles, complex requirements or complicated instructions. His projects are at the same time simple and direct. He also fought to impose the idea that design had to be accessible to everybody. In 2006, his main creation, the iconic Eclipse lamp, integrated the permanent collection of the Architecture and Design’s department of the MoMA in New York. • Permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA), Architecture and Design department.

ILSE LANG

Designer, architect (1959) - Caçapava do Sul (RS) - Brazil

-

Graduated in Architecture, Ilse Lang created her first piece of furniture in 1988 and took part in the Movesp contest. 1st prize Winner, she decided to dedicate herself exclusively to furniture design and forgot for a while her architect career. Difficult but crowned with success choice since Ilse Lang is recognized today as one of the greatest revelations of the contemporary Brazilian design. Ilse Lang was born in Caçapava, a small town located in southern Brazil, very close to Uruguay and Argentina. This “Gaúcho” land is far from this tropical Brazil so often pointed up. It is from this cold, monochromatic and vast region that Ilse Lang gets her inspiration. Regarding Ilse Lang, innovation is to make things even simpler than they already are. She understands simplification as an evolution: to focus on what is essential. A successful design cannot be reduced to a visual aspect nor to an innovating technical answer. A successful design is a balance between form and function. The coexistence of these two concepts is the important thing. Her stroke is simple and pure. Cleverness and innovation give her design an amazing look. • Movesp award- 1988 • Museo da Casa Brasileira award - 2000 • Movelsul award - 2002 • Liceu de Artes o Oficios award - 2002 • IF award - 2007 • IF award - 2009 • Idea Brazil award - 2009
