Florence unveiled, an old dream kept like a treasure, between golden stones and skies that turn pink at sunset. “It was in Versailles, where I was working on a photo reportage in 1995, that I started taking photographs for myself. Along with the photos commissioned by the publishing house, I started photographing the work site, the empty spaces... Photographs that would defnitely never be selected for publication, but were almost metaphysical in character. And I did the same during my subsequent photo reportages. These are the works I exhibited in my frst photo exhibition, several years later”. The frst of many exhibitions taking the work of Florentine photographer Massimo Listri to the most prestigious institutions in the world, from the Vatican Museums to the Morgan Library & Museum in New York and the Shanghai Himalayas Museum. Listri’s photographs, almost exclusively interiors, capture the true soul of places, restoring them to their most authentic, genuine beauty.
An innate sense of perspective, and the ‘absolute eye’ recalling his most illustrious compatriots of Renaissance times that has earned him world fame and the publication of about a hundred photo books. His works are incredibly immersive, to the point that you feel you could step into them, walk around and explore the place. With this refned ability to read and interpret places, offering his poetic yet authentic and true testimony, over the past ffty years or so Listri has of course also told the story of his own city, Florence, capturing the interiors of ancient palaces and the city’s most important museums. Every great collector or designer has a copy of Sala Bianca di Palazzo Pitti and, last but not

Le sue fotografe, quasi esclusivamente d’interni, riescono a catturare la vera anima dei luoghi restituendoli alla loro più autentica e nuda bellezza. Un senso della prospettiva innato e quel suo ‘sguardo assoluto’ che rimanda ai suoi più illustri concittadini rinascimentali gli sono valsi una fama internazionale senza pari, e un centinaio di libri fotografci.
Le sue opere sono infatti incredibilmente immersive, al punto da dare l’impressione di poterci entrare, camminare, ed esplorare. Con questa capacità soprafna di leggere e interpretare i luoghi, restituendone testimonianza poetica ma al contempo così autentica e reale, da oltre cinquant’anni, racconta, ça va sans dire, anche la propria città, Firenze, attraverso gli interni dei palazzi antichi e dei musei più importanti. Non c’è grande collezionista o designer che non possieda la sua Sala Bianca di Palazzo Pitti e, non ultimo, il Salone da Ballo di Palazzo Serristori, dove Listri è stato catturato dalla magnifcenza

So how did Massimo Listri become a photographer?
I was self-taught. I developed a passion for architectural photography at a very early age. In 1970, at 17, I was already living alone, earning my living through my passion for photography. I enjoyed furnishing homes and inventing spaces, and so it was only natural for me to approach magazines like AD Italia and FMR, the magazine published by Franco Maria Ricci. In the ’70s, magazines were seen as a goal for photographers; holding a photo exhibition was unthinkable. Even photographers of the caliber of Diane Arbus, Cartier-Bresson or Edward Weston became known through their publications in magazines.
A lot of work goes into your art. Can you tell us about it?
It’s all a matter of the eye, of the experience of refning your taste, knowing how to see things, how to look. Starting with a combination of instinct, sensibility and practice.
What are the best sensations your work has offered you?
Finding myself absolutely alone in places that are normally crowded, such as museums or public buildings. You feel like the absolute master of an inaccessible place, if only for a few minutes.

Come nasce Massimo Listri fotografo?
È stato un percorso da autodidatta. L’amore per la fotografa e per l’architettura è nato quando ero giovanissimo. Nel 1970, a 17 anni, vivevo già da solo ed era la passione con cui mi guadagnavo da vivere. Mi piaceva arredare casa, inventare gli spazi, per cui, approdare a riviste come AD Italia e FMR, il magazine di Franco Maria Ricci, fu uno sviluppo naturale.
Negli anni ’70 per un fotografo le riviste erano una sorta di punto di arrivo, era impensabile fare mostre fotografche, anche fotograf come Diane Arbus, Cartier-Bresson oppure Edward Weston si facevano conoscere grazie alle pubblicazioni sulle riviste.
Nella sua arte c’è un grande lavoro a monte, qual è?
È dato tutto dall’occhio, dall’esperienza nell’afnare il gusto, nel sapere vedere, guardare. Partendo da un mix di istinto, sensibilità e allenamento.
Tra le sensazioni più belle che le ha regalato il suo lavoro?
Trovarmi in assoluta solitudine in luoghi che di solito sono affollatissimi, tipo musei o palazzi pubblici.
Quella sensazione, anche per pochi minuti, di essere padrone assoluto di un luogo inaccessibile.
Did your origins in the city of Florence produce the strong sense of perspective that is clearly apparent in your works?
We inevitably absorb what is around us, unconsciously metabolizing it so that it changes us. In my case, I think of artists such as Piero della Francesca, and above all of the world of flm. The frames of Bergman, Antonioni, and Kurosawa, with their sense of emptiness.
Can you think of a little-known beautiful spot in Florence that you have had occasion to photograph?
Leon Battista Alberti’s Rucellai Chapel is something truly extraordinary, absolutely worth seeing.
And then, if you go to the Museo della Specola, you must see Galileo’s tribune: it’s really beautiful, but practically nobody knows it’s there. Plus, a few years ago I found myself before the ballroom of Palazzo Serristori, a very old building, which had been completely abandoned, but the dazzling, triumphant beauty of its stuccoes and dream-like concretions stood up perfectly well before the lens. You are also a great collector; your house is like a museum. Which item makes you proudest?
My archeological collection. I established a foundation to protect it.
Plans for the future?
I plan to hold a major retrospective at the Reggia di Caserta, opening in September 2025, featuring 50 large-scale works. And I’m at work on other projects, too.
Il forte senso della prospettiva nelle sue opere che subito si impone allo sguardo, deriva dal suo essere forentino?
È inevitabile assorbire quello che ti circonda. Lo fai inconsciamente, metabolizzi e trasformi. Nel mio caso penso ad artisti come Piero della Francesca, ma soprattutto al cinema. Alle inquadrature di Bergman, Antonioni, Kurosawa e il loro senso di vuoto.
Un luogo bello e poco conosciuto di Firenze che lei ha avuto modo di fotografare?
La Cappella Rucellai fatta da Leon Battista Alberti è straordinaria, assolutamente da vedere. E poi, se uno va al Museo della Specola, deve andare a vedere la Tribuna di Galileo, quasi nessuno sa della sua esistenza, invece è bellissima. Inoltre, qualche anno fa mi sono trovato davanti al Salone da Ballo dell’antichissimo Palazzo Serristori, versava nel più completo stato di abbandono ma il suo fascino trionfale, abbacinante di stucchi e di concrezioni oniriche, non ha avuto il minimo cedimento davanti all’obiettivo.
Lei è anche un grande collezionista, vive in una casa-museo. L’opera di cui va più fero?
La mia collezione di archeologia. Per salvaguardarla ho creato una mia Fondazione. Progetti futuri?
Ho in programma un’importante retrospettiva alla Reggia di Caserta che inaugurerà a settembre 2025, con 50 opere di grande formato. Senza contare alcuni progetti in fase di defnizione.

He’s one of today’s best-known Italian architects, the man behind projects renowned in Italy and the world over. But the frst source of inspiration for Marco Casamonti – founder of Archea Associati, a practice with ofces in Europe, America and Asia – was the city of Florence. His home.
Where does your style, your unique way of defning architecture, come from?
I think architecture – like culture itself – moves around in time and space. If you want to stand out in history, you have to choose the right place and time to live! In the ffteenth century, the right place was Florence: that was where it was all happening. The city maintained this central role at least until 1534, when Michelangelo left Florence for Rome. And it was as if architecture went with him. There were more moves over the centuries: in the nineteenth century, it was Paris, when the wall came down it was Berlin, then it was Beijing before the Olympics. The architect goes where things are changing.
And what is the role of Florence today?
I believe people are coming back. After ‘roaming about’ for centuries, centrality has come back to Florence: it’s a place where modernity and tradition coexist. The Renaissance was the greatest example of modernity linked with classical art. What we want today is not architecture that will amaze, but that interprets a place. And Florence is unique in this way.
His referring to Florence is also a personal matter, as well as a professional one?
Yes, and it’s a privilege. I was born in a city where we don’t need to study the culture of architecture: we are

Dove nasce il suo stile e il suo modo di intendere l’architettura?
Penso che l’architettura - come la cultura, del resto - si muova nel tempo e nello spazio. Se vuoi essere protagonista della storia, devi scegliere il periodo e il luogo in cui vivere. Nel Quattrocento bisognava stare a Firenze: lì accadeva tutto. Questa centralità è durata almeno fno al 1534, quando Michelangelo lasciò Firenze per Roma. È come se con lui anche l’architettura se ne fosse andata. Così nel tempo: nell’Ottocento si andava a Parigi, dopo la caduta del Muro a Berlino, poi a Pechino prima delle Olimpiadi. Oggi Firenze che ruolo ha?
Credo ci sia un ritorno. Dopo secoli di ‘girovagare’, Firenze torna centrale: qui si coniugano modernità e tradizione. Il Rinascimento fu il massimo esempio di modernità legata all’arte classica. Michelangelo, con il suo David, rilegge la statuaria greca ma crea qualcosa di rivoluzionario. Oggi non cerchiamo un’architettura stupefacente, ma capace di interpretare i luoghi. E Firenze è unica in questo.
Il suo riferisi a Firenze è anche una questione personale, oltre che professionale?
Sì, è un privilegio. Sono nato in una città dove la cultura architettonica non si studia: ci sei immerso.

Did the Antinori winery mark a turning point in your career?
Absolutely. It’s one of the frst buildings in Italy to reason about the relationship between architecture and landscape; a manifesto of contemporary dialogue between tradition and innovation. A curved cut in the soil concealing 5 underground levels while opening up breath-taking views over the vineyards, a spiral staircase, bare red brick and natural materials such as terracotta and wood, combining with the brightness of glass and steel.
Florence is also the focus of some outstanding events and clients. Can you tell us about this?
Well, there’s Dolce&Gabbana, who chose Florence for an event held jointly in the Ufzi Gallery and the Antinori winery. They wanted the utmost in tradition and innovation. And this is exactly what Florence has to offer.
The same applies to clients other than Antinori, such as Ferragamo or Commisso, who put their trust in us.
We haven’t done many projects in Florence, but they’ve all been very precise, for highly sensitive clients. The architect interprets other people’s dreams: there can be no architecture without a good client.
What do you think about recovery of abandoned and unused places?
I think it is a very worthy action, and that Lionard is making a contribution to this virtuous process. Finding people who love these places and can bring them new life, new inhabitants, new vitality is defnitely a positive thing.

La Cantina Antinori è un punto di svolta nel suo lavoro?
Assolutamente sì. È uno dei primi edifci in Italia a ragionare sul rapporto tra architettura e paesaggio; un manifesto di come possono dialogare, in modo contemporaneo, tradizione e innovazione. Un taglio curvilineo nel terreno cela 5 piani interrati mentre schiude la vista mozzafato sui vigneti, la scala elicoidale, i mattoni rossi a vista e materiali naturali come terracotta e legno, abbinati alla luminosità del vetro e dell’acciaio. Firenze è anche al centro di eventi e committenti straordinari. Ci racconta?
Penso a Dolce&Gabbana che hanno scelto Firenze per un evento tra gli Ufzi e la Cantina Antinori. Cercavano il massimo della tradizione e dell’innovazione. È ciò che Firenze offre. Lo stesso vale per i committenti come - oltre ad Antinori - Ferragamo o Commisso, che ci hanno dato fducia. A Firenze abbiamo fatto pochi progetti, ma molto curati e con clienti di grande sensibilità. L’architetto interpreta i sogni altrui: senza una buona committenza, l’architettura non esiste.
Cosa pensa del recupero dei luoghi abbandonati o non utilizzati?
Penso che sia un’azione molto meritoria e anche Lionard è un tassello di questo processo virtuoso. Trovare persone che amano questi luoghi e possano dar loro nuova vita, nuovi abitanti, nuova linfa è sicuramente qualcosa di positivo.
You have also brought abandoned places back to life. How about a few examples?
Our new ofces in Palazzo San Giorgio, next door to Palazzo Serristori. The entrance to our new headquarters will be an exhibition space for the important art collection of my father, Roberto Casamonti. It’s a way of saying that architecture has its roots in art. Another example is in Via de’ Cimatori. It was supposed to become a spa.
But we talked to the mayor, and together we decided to save it and give it back to the city. It will be ready by the end of this year, after three years of work.
Not much is known about your work in interior design. How do you approach this theme?
These are difcult projects, but we approach them with great passion. Recently, with the publisher Actar, we decided to publish a book all about our interiors. One of our most fascinating projects was a home in Forte dei Marmi. The client, an art collector, wanted to involve artists such as Massimo Listri, Francesca Pasquali, and Emilio Isgrò. The artworks are not additions, but an integral part of the project. An example of true teamwork. What if you had to choose fve projects to symbolize your career?
That’s a tough question… But I’ll try. I must mention the Antinori winery again, because it was my frst great turning point. Then there’s the Ceramics Museum in Liling, China: transforming small items into monumental architecture. The stadium in Tirana, in Albania: it has regenerated a part of the city. Then there’s Viola Park, the sports center of the Florence football team, Fiorentina: an example of architecture at the service of sports and the landscape. And, more recently, the theater in Via de’ Cimatori: an urban renewal project combining memory with the future.
Anche lei ha ridato vita a luoghi abbandonati. Qualche esempio?
Uno è il nostro nuovo studio in Palazzo San Giorgio, accanto a Palazzo Serristori. L’ingresso della nuova sede sarà lo spazio espositivo dell’importante collezione d’arte di mio padre, Roberto Casamonti. Un modo per dire che l’architettura ha radici nell’arte. L’altro è il teatro in via de’ Cimatori. Doveva diventare una spa. Insieme al sindaco abbiamo deciso di salvarlo e restituirlo alla città. Dopo tre anni di lavoro, sarà pronto entro l’anno.
Non si conosce molto del suo lavoro sugli interni. Come si pone rispetto a questo tema?
Sono progetti faticosi, ma li affrontiamo con passione. Di recente, con l’editore Actar, abbiamo deciso di pubblicare un libro tutto dedicato agli interni che abbiamo realizzato. Uno dei progetti più affascinanti è una casa a Forte dei Marmi: il cliente, collezionista d’arte, ha voluto coinvolgere artisti come Massimo Listri, Francesca Pasquali, Emilio Isgrò. Le opere non sono aggiunte, ma parte integrante del progetto. Un vero lavoro a quattro mani.
Se dovesse scegliere cinque progetti simbolici della sua carriera?
Domanda difcile… Ma ci provo. Non posso non citare di nuovo la Cantina Antinori perché è stata il primo grande punto di svolta. Il Museo della Ceramica di Liling, in Cina: trasforma oggetti piccoli in architettura monumentale. Lo Stadio di Tirana, in Albania: ha rigenerato un pezzo di città. Il Viola Park, il centro sportivo della Fiorentina: un esempio di architettura al servizio dello sport e del paesaggio. E, più recente, il teatro di via de’ Cimatori: un recupero urbano che unisce memoria e futuro.
