When did your passion for jewellery begin? Grazia: As a child. Actually I would say that I was born with it. Marica: It began when I wore Grazia’s creations. Now it is a passion that is completely in harmony with Grazia’s innate creativity. What attracts you the most? Grazia: Still being excited by it today. Marica: All the creative work behind the creation of each item. What is the leitmotiv of your creations? Grazia: Precious stones and colours. Marica: Gold and burnished silver. What is the best compliment you have received for one of your items of jewellery? Grazia: “Your jewellery is always recognisable.” Marica: “At a dinner party three of us were wearing your jewellery”. Marica: Tutto ciò che c’è dietro la nascita di ogni gioiello. Qual è il leitmotiv delle sue creazioni? Grazia: Pietra e colore. Marica: Oro e argento brunito. What does it mean to work for a fashion house that is so important at international level? Sacrifice and commitment. Putting aside your life to follow the rhythms of something else and often of someone else. It is nevertheless exciting and wonderful. Chanel is the best company in every respect and I would not trade it for any other. How do you become a benchmark of style and elegance? As Karl Lagerfeld said “Elegance is an attitude, it is something innate and immortal! A peasant woman in Ethiopia may be more chic than a rich lady.” I agree with him. Style, on the other hand, is created over time: you continue to reinvent it until it becomes your own. The biggest thrill? Working with Karl Lagerfeld. I think that he is the most brilliant person there is. It is still thrilling working behind the scenes at Chanel. The catwalks are very intense. The dresses are works of art, the staging impressive and everything blends into a magical context. When the sublime music starts, time stands still and all the stress and fatigue of nights spent on fittings are rewarded by that moment full of joy and adrenaline. Is there an encounter that changed your life? When I met Laurence Dacade, not only because it is thanks to her that I began this adventure. She has taught me all I know and she teaches me about art and life as well as being a great friend.

Cosa vuol dire lavorare per una maison così importante a livello mondiale? Sacrificio, impegno e rinuncia. Ci vuole umiltà e semplicità e non tutti riescono a resistere in questo sistema. Detto questo è entusiasmante e meraviglioso, Chanel è l’azienda più bella sotto ogni punto di vista e non la cambierei per nessun’altra. Come si diventa punto di riferimento di stile e eleganza? Come dice Karl Lagerfeld “L’eleganza è un’attitudine, è qualcosa di innato e di immortale! Una contadina in Etiopia può essere più chic di una ricca signora” L’emozione più grande? Lavorare con Karl Lagerfeld. Credo che sia la persona più geniale che esista. E poi le sfilate sono un momento molto forte. I vestiti sono opere d’arte, le istallazioni imponenti e il tutto si fonde in un contesto magico. Quando parte la musica il tempo si ferma e tutto lo stress e la stanchezza delle notti trascorse sui fitting sono ripagati da quell’istante pieno di gioia e di adrenalina. C’è un incontro che le ha cambiato la vita? Quello con Laurence Dacade, non solo perchè grazie a lei è iniziata quest’avventura, ma perché ogni giorno insieme imparo un’arte, quella delle scarpe. E’ una maestra di vita oltre che una grande amica.

What are you working on at the moment? Whazzo, a startup founded together with some partners in May 2014. It is a free app where those who live in Rome can see all there is to do, from films to concerts, from the theatre to museums and from festivals to fairs. How can it make life easier? Imagine not having to visit several sites to know what is going on. In the app there are film trailers, you can listen to a song by the artist before the concert, figure out how to get there and book a taxi... How did your grandfather describe Capri? He was genius at describing everything. Francesco, he did not let us call him grandfather, told us about the amazing people who came to Capri. He was the forerunner of a lifestyle that today we all associate with the island. He entertained guests from around the world with charm and mastery in their own languages and, ça va sans dire, women from all over the world. In what way do you feel like him and in what way are you different? I was 12 or 13 years old and I was running from home to the walls of Via Camerelle to meet my friends. As I was passing in front of the hotel La Palma, I heard women laughing. Curious, like him, I looked in and I saw Francesco who was telling who knows what anecdote, fascinating them all. I hid, thinking that he would tell my mum. Now I know that if he had seen me he would have made me sit next to him.

A cosa stai lavorando in questo momento? A Whazzo, una startup fondata insieme a alcuni soci a maggio 2014. Un’app gratuita dove chi vive a Roma può vedere tutto ciò che c’è da fare, dal cinema ai concerti, dal teatro ai musei, dalle sagre alle fiere. Come può migliorare la vita? Immagina di non dover più visitare siti diversi per sapere cosa fare. Sull’app ci sono i trailer dei film, puoi ascoltare un brano dell’ artista prima del concerto, capire come arrivarci e prenotare un taxi. Lo stesso vale per teatri, mostre e tanto altro. Come descriveva Capri tuo nonno? Lui era un genio nel descrivere qualsiasi cosa. Francesco, non ci permetteva di chiamarlo nonno, raccontava di personaggi incredibili che venivano a Capri, fu il precursore di uno stile di vita che oggi tutti associano all’isola. Intratteneva con simpatia e maestranza delle lingue ospiti da tutto il mondo e, c’a va sans dire, donne di tutto il mondo. In cosa ti senti simile a lui e in cosa diverso? Avevo 13 anni e scappai di casa per raggiungere i miei amici sui muretti di via Camerelle. Passando davanti all’hotel La Palma sentii delle risate di donne. Mi affacciai incuriosito e vidi Francesco che raccontava chissà quale aneddoto affascinando tutte. Mi nascosi pensando che l’avrebbe raccontato a mia madre. Oggi so che se mi avesse visto mi avrebbe fatto sedere accanto a lui e non l’avrebbe detto a nessuno.

When did your love for fashion start? Fashion was a crucial element of my childhood; I always watched my mother as she sewed trousers with passion for the shops in Capri. Is there an encounter that changed your life? Meeting Gianluca Isaia was one of the events that changed my life and urged me to continue along this path. I met him when I was working in another company 25 years ago where I already sold Isaia products and I never forgot the respect and trust that he immediately gave me. At 20 years old it gave me great satisfaction. How would you describe yourself? I am extremely extrovert. I love relating and connecting with people and different cultures fascinate me. What aspect of your job do you find the most satisfying? The satisfaction and gratification of seeing that what I do is appreciated by most of the people I meet. I love getting feedback. What is “in” and what is “out” in Capri? The unmistakeable perfume of the sea, Aurora’s water pizza, the Taverna di Guido and, for just over a year, the beautiful Isaia boutique are all in. There is nothing that is out in Capri. I would say the winter, which is very sad on the island. What links Capri and the United States? The crazy energy that you feel as soon as you arrive, only that in New York it never stops.

Come è nata la tua passione per la moda? Da mia madre che, da vera pantalonaia, cuciva con passione i pantaloni per i negozi capresi. C’e’ un incontro che ti ha cambiato la vita? L’incontro con Gianluca Isaia. L’ho conosciuto quando lavoravo in un’altra azienda 25 anni fa. Non ho mai dimenticato il rispetto e la fiducia immediata che mi ha tramesso. Come descriveresti te stessa? Sono un’estroversa ai massimi livelli. Adoro la relazione e il rapporto con le persone, mi affascinano le culture diverse. Quale aspetto del tuo lavoro ti gratifica maggiormente? La soddisfazione e la gratificazione nel vedere che quello che faccio è apprezzato dalla maggior parte delle persone che incontro nel mio percorso. Amo i miei feedback. Cosa è in e cosa è out a Capri? In a Capri è l’odore del mare che si sente appena si mette piede sull’isola, inconfondibile, è la pizza all’acqua di Aurora, è la Taverna di Guido e da un anno a questa parte anche la bellissima boutique di Isaia. L’Out non va d’accordo con Capri ma se volessimo essere critici direi l’inverno, che sull’isola rattrista molto. Cosa lega Capri e gli Stati Uniti? L’energia pazzesca che senti appena arrivi.

Can you describe your typical day? Every morning I go to the port where my Mascalzone is moored and, after a routine check, I dress her and make her beautiful, to catch the eyes of all my guests. What memories do you try to leave your guests with? Luckily I often spend my days with loyal customers who return each year, while other days bring something new. I make an effort to show them the island through my eyes and let them experience it through my words. What is your preferred fishing style? I love fishing in all its forms and consider it a life style, but my favourite is black squid fishing with the sail opened on the mast of the goitre at night. I make the squid hooks, that in the jargon we call sponges, myself. It is a type of fishing that has been practised in Capri for over 100 years and is done only in the Gulfs of Naples and Salerno. What style to clients request most often? Deep-sea fishing, or big game as the American’s call it, where you try to catch the infamous tuna, which can, however, only be fished for a short period of the year while obviously respecting weight and size restrictions. You can nevertheless catch it and then release it so you still have the excitement and adrenaline of the fight over the priceless satisfaction of then freeing the tuna.

Come si svolge la tua giornata? Ogni mattina mi reco al porto dov’è ormeggiato il mio Mascalzone e, dopo un controllo, lo vesto e lo rendo il più bello, per conquistare la vista di tutti i miei ospiti. Che ricordo cerchi di lasciare ai tuoi ospiti? Ho la fortuna spesso di trascorrere giornate con clienti affezionati che tornano ogni anno, altri giorni invece c’è il piacere della sorpresa. Cerco di impegnegnarmi affinché essi possano vedere l’isola attraverso i miei occhi e viverla attraverso le mie parole. Il tuo stile di pesca preferito? Adoro la pesca in tutte le sue forme e la considero come un vero e proprio stile di vita, ma la mia preferita è la pesca al totano nero con la vela montata sull’albero del gozzo di notte. Fabbrico da solo le totanare! Lo stile più richiesto dai clienti? La pesca d’altura, come la chiamano gli americani, il big game, Dove si cerca di insidiare il famigerato tonno, il quale però può essere pescato solo in un breve periodo dell’anno rispettando ovviamente peso e misure. È comunque sempre possibile effettuare il catch and release in cui, dopo l’emozione e l’adrenalina che ti invadono durante il combattimento, subentra l’impagabile soddisfazione di ridonare la libertà a sua maestà il tonno.

We had arrived at the Phoenician Steps, once the only road linking the port of Marina Grande to Anacapri, the “high” area of the island. From here we can continue our tour and climb the 921 steps to where we can admire Capri in all its glory. The steps start off gently and then become gradually steeper. Along the way you can see crosses engraved on the stones. They were commissioned by the bishops of Capri to ask for divine protection against the landslides on the mountain. The stairway was restored in 1998 and today there is a solid wire mesh to protect against the falling stones. Journey times depend on your level of fitness: more athletic people can do the journey in just over half an hour, but if you are not used to going up thousands of flights of stairs, it could take you a few hours, also because the view is so nice that you may want to stop often. Upon arrival at Anacapri you must visit Villa San Michele: the house that the Swedish doctor and writer Axel Munthe built at the top of the steps. When he arrived in Capri in 1885, Axel Munthe was a young doctor. There he found the light he sought and he decided to settle in Anacapri building a villa on the ruins of an ancient chapel dedicated to St. Michael, following a few sketches found on a wall. The result was a structure spread over several floors: the studio is on the first floor while the loggia crosses pergolas and columns to reach a circular viewpoint that overlooks the Gulf of Naples. In Villa San Michele there are the archaeological remains recovered by Munthe from Capri, Anacapri and elsewhere, as well as some others donated by friends. There are fragments of sarcophagi, busts, Roman paving slabs, marble statues and columns. In the garden there is a Greek tomb and a granite sphinx gazes out across the island of Capri. Before taking the chairlift to Monte Solaro, an absolute must if you are in Anacapri, you should try

E’ una delle più belle passeggiate dell’isola che ci permette di ammirare il panorama di Capri in tutto il suo splendore. Partiamo dalla Scala Fenicia, un tempo l’unica via di collegamento tra il porto di Marina Grande e Anacapri, il comune “alto” dell’Isola. I gradini (921!) cominciano dolcemente per poi diventare man mano più ripidi. Lungo il cammino noterete delle croci incise sulla pietra, furono fatte incidere dai vescovi di Capri per chiedere la protezione divina contro le frane che si staccavano dalla montagna. La scala è stata restaurata nel 1998 e oggi c’è una solida rete metallica a proteggere dalle pietre. I tempi di percorrenza dipendono dalla propria forma fisica: i più allenati possono anche impiegare poco più di mezz’ora per salire, ma se non siete abituati a percorrere rampe di un migliaio di scalini, calcolate un paio d’ore, anche perché il panorama è così bello che inviterà a tante soste. All’arrivo ad Anacapri è d’obbligo fermarsi per visitare Villa San Michele: la casa che il medico e scrittore svedese Axel Munthe costruì sulla sommità della scala. Quando arrivò a Capri, nel 1885, Axel Munthe era un giovane medico. Qui trovò la luce che cercava e decise di stabilirsi ad Anacapri realizzando una villa sui resti di un’antica cappella dedicata a San Michele, seguendo pochi schizzi fatti su una parete. Il risultato fu un complesso articolato su più livelli: lo studio è al primo piano mentre la loggia attraversa pergole e colonne per giungere a un belvedere circolare che affaccia sul Golfo di Napoli. Nella Villa San Michele sono conservati reperti archeologici recuperati da Munthe a Capri, Anacapri e altrove, a volte donati da amici. Troviamo frammenti di sarcofagi, busti, pavimenti romani, marmi e colonne. Nel giardino c’è una tomba greca e una sfinge in granito domina dal belvedere tutta l’isola di Capri. Prima di prendere la seggiovia per il Monte Solaro, tappa obbligata se si è a Anacapri, non si può non prendere una granita al melone in piazza Boffe e ammirare La Casa Rossa che si trova scendendo via Orlandi. a melon-flavoured ice drink in Piazza Boffe and admire the Red House, which is located down Via Orlandi. Its unusual shape draws the eye. A Pompeian red villa that combines architectural styles: it has mullioned windows and crenels, while inside you can see the structure of a square tower and a porticoed courtyard. It belonged to the American Colonel John Clay Mackowen, who arrived in Italy just after the American Civil War and settled in Anacapri until 1899. Inside, the Red House is home to a permanent exhibition entitled “The Painted Island”, a collection of images of Capri showing its traditions and daily habits in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In the building there are four Roman statues found in 1964 and 1974 in the Blue Grotto. We leave the pedestrian area, cross the Monumento and go down Via Caposcuro, until we reach the chairlift. Capri has everything, even a chairlift. During the 13-minute ride to the summit of the mountain, you will be entranced by the stunning view of the Gulf of Naples with Mount Vesuvius, the Gulf of Salerno, the Anacapri plain, the island of Ischia and of the incomparable beauty of the blue sea. The Monte Solaro is the highest point of the island of Capri. It has very eroded eastern and south-eastern slopes and overlooks the sea, and a wide sloping side down to Anacapri. Monte Solaro gives us a beautiful panorama of Capri, of the Faraglioni emerging proudly from the sea and the stunning and rugged coastline, all enriched by a flora that boasts more than 850 species. You can go down from Monte Solaro on foot but we recommend that you wear shoes suitable for mountain trails. Walking down allows you to enjoy another amazing view that you could not otherwise see: the hermitage of Cetrella, on a street that smells of laurel and lemon verbena. The hermitage is a small church dedicated to Santa Maria di Cetrella, a white building like the others on the island, but solitary and on a peak, literally, on Marina Piccola. From the hermitage of Cetrella we go back and then follow the path downhill. This is perhaps the most tiring part of the itinerary. In about twenty minutes you are back in Anacapri. It’s time to cool down and have a swim. The choice is between the lighthouse at Punta Carena or the Blue Grotto. Spending an afternoon at the Lighthouse is like being in a 50s film, with wooden terraces and pergolas that create shade. Just a few metres from the Blue Grotto is Il Riccio, the beach club of the Capri Palace with its Michelin star. All’interno della Casa Rossa è allestita una mostra permanente intitolata “L’isola dipinta”, che raccoglie immagini di Capri nelle sue tradizioni e abitudini quotidiane tra l’Ottocento ed il Novecento. All’interno ci sono anche le quattro statue romane ritrovate nel 1964 e nel 1974 nella Grotta Azzurra. Usciamo dall’area pedonale, attraversiamo il Monumento e imbocchiamo via Caposcuro, siamo alla base della seggiovia. A Capri non manca nulla, nemmeno un impianto di risalita. Durante i 13 minuti di percorso della seggiovia per arrivare alla vetta del monte, si rimane estasiati dalla splendida vista del Golfo di Napoli con il Vesuvio, del Golfo di Salerno, della piana di Anacapri, dell’isola d’Ischia e dell’incomparabile bellezza del colore del mare. Il Monte Solaro è la parte più alta dell’isola di Capri. E’ caratterizzato da un versante est e sud-est profondamente eroso e a picco sul mare, e da un ampio versante degradante verso Anacapri. Il Monte Solaro ci regala tutta la bellezza del panorama caprese, dei Faraglioni che emergono orgogliosi dal mare e della stupenda e frastagliata costa, il tutto arricchito dalla vegetazione che vanta più di 850 specie. Da Monte Solaro si può scendere anche a piedi e il consiglio è quello di indossare scarpe adatte ai sentieri di montagna. Scendere a piedi vi farà godere di un altro pezzetto di panorama, altrimenti irraggiungibile, quello dell’Eremo di Cetrella, su una strada che profuma di alloro ed erba cetra. L’eremo è una piccola chiesa dedicata a Santa Maria di Cetrella, una costruzione bianca come quelle dell’isola, ma solitaria e a picco, letteralmente, su Marina Piccola. Dall’eremo di Cetrella si torna indietro e poi si segue il sentiero in discesa, questa forse la parte più stancante del percorso, e in una ventina di minuti, si arriva di nuovo ad Anacapri. È l’ora di ristorarsi e di fare un bel bagno. La scelta è tra il faro di Punta Carena o la Grotta Azzurra. Un pomeriggio al Faro è come essere in un film degli anni ‘50, con le terrazze di legno e i pergolati a fare ombra, La Grotta Azzurra ospita a pochi metri Il Riccio, il beach club del Capri Palace, forte della sua stella Michelin. A voi la scelta.

The face of advertising campaigns for major worldwide brandsperhaps because she looks like the super top-model Cindy Crawford-, she made her debut in the fashion world as a young girl parading down the runways for Emporio Armani, Jean Paul Gaultier, La Perla, John Galliano and Fendi. Today Chiara Baschetti is not only a very popular fashion model, but also an actress, having played a role in Ma che bella sorpresa, a romantic comedy directed by Alessandro Genovesi, released in Italian movie theatres in spring 2015, alongside Claudio Bisio and Frank Matano. We met with her a few days before the opening of the Ischia Global Film Fest, the film and music event held in the beautiful setting of Ischia, of which she is the patroness. How do you feel and what do you expect from this experience? I am very excited! This is my first experience as the patroness of an event with guests from all over the world. I feel flattered by having been chosen and I can’t wait to put myself to the test. I don’t know what to expect, but I am sure that this experience will allow me to meet great international icons, from whom I have a lot to learn, and leave me with wonderful memories. How would you describe your relationship with Ischia and, in general, with the Amalfi Coast? I love the Amalfi Coast. I have been there several times, for both business and leisure, and I believe it is one of the most beautiful places in the world. My favorite places are Positano, Sorrento and Ischia, of course! Fashion model and actress. In what role do you feel more comfortable and why? As a fashion model, simply because it has been my job for twelve years and it is the world I am the most familiar with. It all began with…..? A walk on the beach along the Adriatic Coast, at home, on a Sunday afternoon in July. It was the year 2003. You debuted on the big screen with the film Ma che bella sorpresa, a romantic comedy which was released in spring 2015.

Ho avuto la possibilità di visitarla diverse volte sia per piacere che per lavoro e credo sia uno dei posti più belli del mondo. Tra i luoghi che preferisco, Positano, Sorrento, e ovviamente Ischia! Modella e attrice. In quale ruolo si sente più a suo agio e perché? Quello di modella, semplicemente perché è il mio lavoro da dodici anni ed è un contesto che conosco meglio e nel quale mi muovo con maggiore facilità. Se le chiedessero: tutto è cominciato con…? Matteo Garrone’s, the multiawarded Italian film director, one of the special guests of the latest Ischia Global Fest Quello di Matteo Garrone, pluripremiato regista italiano tra gli ospiti d’onore dell’ultimo Ischia Global Fest He is one of the guests of the latest Ischia Global Fest, as the winner of the Fantasy Award for his new film, Tale of Tales, a dark fantasy film shot in English, with an international stellar cast and an extraordinary budget of twelve million euros. The Tale of Tales is based on the collection of fairy tales Lo cunto de li cunti by Giambattista Basile, a seventeenth-century writer who anticipated the Grimm brothers. The film immerses you in a fairy-tale world populated with ogres, monsters and witches. The film was shot in amazing locations, starting with the Castle of Sammezzano, an architectural dream, an explosion of colors nestled in the Tuscan woods. A Moresque-style palace, built in the mid-1800s by the Marchese Ferdinando Panciatichi Ximenes d’Aragona, who had planned for it to be a sort of labyrinth with 365 rooms, one for each day of the year. Garrone, what is it that you found in Basile’s fairy tales? I found most of my obsessions. The body’s metamorphosis, the theme of desire, of mad passion that is pushed beyond all limits. When did you fall in love with cinema? As a child I used to draw non-stop, then I went to art school, I began painting. My love story with cinema began with a scene I saw in the streets on the outskirts of Rome, which caught my attention. What was it? In that landscape suspended in time, some Nigerian hookers suddenly arrived, wearing beautiful turbans and gaudy colored dresses. They looked like extras from a movie set, like queens surrounded by a court of jesters, scoundrels and beggars: all the people hanging around them. I was absolutely thunderstruck by that scene, which seemed the scene of a film. I spent a whole day filming those prostitutes and I made a short film, Silhouette, which 72 Capri | The Divine Coast

Il racconto dei racconti Matteo Garrone lo ha tratto dal libro Lo cunto de li cunti di Giambattista Basile, un autore del Seicento che ha anticipato di un paio di secoli le fiabe nere dei fratelli Grimm. È un film che affonda nel passato, nel terreno delle fiabe popolari piene di orchi, di sortilegi, di mutazioni mostruose. Garrone, che cosa trovava nelle fiabe di Basile? Ho ritrovato molte delle mie ossessioni. Le metamorfosi del corpo, e il tema del desiderio, dell’amore che diviene folle, e si spinge oltre ogni limite. Quando è iniziata la sua storia d’amore col cinema? Da bambino disegnavo incessantemente, poi liceo artistico, tanta accademia, tanta pittura. Alla fine, tutto iniziò con un’immagine, vista alla periferia romana. Che immagine era? In quel paesaggio sospeso, entrarono delle prostitute nigeriane, superbe nei loro turbanti, fasciate di colori sgargianti. Sembravano comparse sul set di un film. Sembravano regine con intorno una corte di buffoni, di miserabili, di mendicanti: tutti quelli che ronzavano loro intorno. Rimasi folgorato da quella scena tutta cinematografica. Filmai una giornata di quelle prostitute e realizzai un cortometraggio, Silhouette, che fu premiato al Sacher film festival di Nanni Moretti.

text Teresa Favi photo Marinetta Saglio With Marisa Laurito, talking about art, food, entertainment and theatre Con Marisa Laurito, parlando di arte, cibo, spettacolo e teatro With her attractive personality, unaffected manners, warm and sincere eyes, she had a very natural presence on TV at the height of her television career, in shows such as Quelli della notte (1985) alongside Renzo Arbore, Marisa la nuit in 1987 and in the 1987 Fantastico show with Adriano Celentano. However, television was her second career. She began as a stage actress, by joining the theatre company of Eduardo De Filippo the day she turned twenty-one. “As soon as I came of age, I didn’t want to waste another minute”, says Marisa Laurito, Neapolitan from head to toe, with her raven black hair always pinned up like La Belle Otero-, because I had planned to become an actress at the age of eight”. But her father interfered with her plans. He wanted her to go to college and take a degree. But Marisa, stubborn as she was, played a dirty trick on him. In high school, she began painting and was so good at it that her father encouraged her to develop her artistic talent, by helping her sell her paintings, being sure that he would keep her away from the neighborhood’s theater that way. She pretended to agree with him. And do you know why? “Because with the money I earned selling the paintings, I secretly paid for drama lessons”, she confides us. And to think that she rediscovered her passion for art in the past few years! Owing to her extraordinary creativity and uncontainable vitality, she has shown her works in several galleries, at Rome’s Triennale Museum in 2014, and this year she is among the artists showcased at the Venice Art Biennale, at the Guatemala Pavilion, curated by art critic Daniele Radini Tedeschi. Sweet Death is the title of the exhibition showing until November and featuring the works by Marisa Laurito: colorful, Baroque-style and highly ironic installations made of silicone, which describe the “sweet death” of Italian cuisine and combine Marisa’s dual passion for art and cooking. What is your opinion about Italian cuisine? There are some strongholds of excellence that resist no matter what, but the current proliferation of culinary fads is a reflection of most chefs’ tendency to be surprising at all costs, even to the detriment of taste. 76 Capri | The Divine Coast

La prima è stata favolosamente segnata dalla scuola severissima e dal teatro di Eduardo De Filippo nella cui compagnia entra a 21 anni, firmando il giorno del suo compleanno. “Diventata maggiorenne, non persi un minuto di più - racconta Marisa Laurito, napoletana dalla punta dei piedi fino all’ultima ciocca dei capelli corvini sempre appuntati come la Bella Otero – perché già a otto anni volevo fare l’attrice”. Il padre non le dà ascolto, anzi l’ostacola. La vuole laureata. Marisa, ostinata, a diciassette anni gli gioca un tiro mancino degno di Gian Burrasca. Mentre è al liceo comincia a dipingere, la cosa le viene bene, talmente bene che il papà l’incoraggia pur di tenerla lontano dai teatri di quartiere. Grazie a un estro fuori dal comune e a una vitalità incontenibile, dopo aver esposto in varie gallerie, e nel 2014 alla Triennale di Roma, quest’anno il suo nome è tra gli artisti invitati a esporre nel padiglione del Guatemala, alla Biennale di Venezia, dal critico d’arte Daniele Radini Tedeschi che ne è il curatore. Sweet Death è il titolo della mostra che ospita, fino a novembre, le installazioni colorate, pop e debordanti di ironia realizzate, in silicone, da Marisa Laurito per raccontare la “dolce morte” della cucina italiana, unendo a quella per l’arte anche l’altra sua grande, e forse più nota, passione per i fornelli. Al di là della provocazione, cosa pensa della cucina italiana? Ci sono roccaforti di eccellenza che resistono con sapienza e coraggio, ma è altrettanto evidente il dilagare di mode culinarie che pur di sorprendere guardano sempre meno al gusto.

The “places of fashion” are increasingly associated with the big urban centers, where the final stage of a complex creative, production and sales process, which is usually carried out in decentralized locations, takes place. Such an association is justified by the birth and development of the “fashion industry”, which has been linked, since the 1800s, to the economic, political and cultural centrality of the polis, rather than to smaller or marginal places and urban centers. So, according to this conviction, the significant representations of fashion and fashions should be captured in metropolises or capital cities such as Paris, London, New York, Rome and Milan and certainly not in small towns or in mountain villages. And small tourist resorts are usually considered to be “fashionable” places or places where people show off clothing designed and produced somewhere else, and are generally not identified with the design or production of fashion. However, some of these “tourist” destinations defy such a convenient and easy schematization. Alcune di queste mete “turistiche”, però, sfuggono, a vario livello, a questa comoda e facile schematizzazione: Capri è uno di questi luoghi e, senza ombra di dubbio, Capri | The Divine Coast 97

destination in Italy, and perhaps in the whole world, where the two above-mentioned characteristics have merged. The Island is, in fact, a “fashionable” place as well as a “place of “fashion”, an “atelier” which led to the creation of clothing styles, clothing items and lifestyles, or contributed to the development of ideas and ways born in nearby tourist resorts such as Positano and Ischia. This “double identity” reached its peak in the years spanning from the immediate postwar period to the early 1970s and the person who, more than any other, came to embody it was the Marchese Emilio Pucci. Thanks to this Florentine aristocrat, and to the Neapolitan artist-designer Livio De Simone, to the “Island’s Weaver” Clarette Gallotti and to the many local tailors, retailers, artisans and entrepreneurs, including Di Fiore de La Parisienne, the Island became, in those years, the capital of the so-called “Boutique Fashion”, or rather, of a very peculiar style. The reasons behind this special and unusual dual role played by Capri in those years are, of course, deeply rooted in its history. è il luogo turistico in ambito italiano, e forse a livello internazionale, in cui le due prerogative si sono maggiormente fuse: l’Isola è stata, infatti, luogo “alla moda” e “della moda”; laboratorio dove sono nati modi di vestire, capi di abbigliamento e stili di vita o che è diventata terminale di sollecitazioni, idee e modi nati in località turistiche vicine come Positano o Ischia. Il periodo apicale di questo doppia identità si estende dagli anni dall’immediato secondo dopoguerra fino agli inizi degli anni Settanta del Novecento e la persona che, più di altre, ha rappresentato questa identità plurale è stato il marchese Emilio Pucci: grazie a questo aristocratico fiorentino, ma anche grazie allo stilista-artista napoletano Livio De Simone, alla “Tessitrice dell’Isola” Clarette Gallotti e a sarti, commercianti, artigiani e imprenditori locali tra cui i Di Fiore de La Parisienne, l’Isola diventa in quegli anni la capitale della cosiddetta “Moda Boutique” o, ancor meglio, di uno stile peculiare. Le ragioni di questo singolare ed anomalo ruolo assunto da Capri in quegli anni sono depositate, ovviamente, nel suo passato. 98 Capri | The Divine Coast

And Capri in the years of La Dolce Vita was the favorite destination of the paparazzi who came to capture the many people who loved going to the island. Tonino had just a little more than 20 years old when, for the first time, he met Jacqueline Kennedy on one of his first visits to Capri. Jackie had arrived with John Kennedy in Naples and had the opportunity to make a quick visit to the Island. Like many people who love the Azure Island, she was fascinated by the freedom that it exuded, the simplicity of island life that allowed her to abandon the many protocols that she was required to follow. Eight days full of features and films from 39 different countries, 109 selected works including 54 national premieres, 2 world premieres and 2 European premieres. Outdoor screening, tributes and the presence of international guests in different places of the Castle animated the life of the island during the Festival until its conclusion on the 4th of July. The Ischia Film Award 2015 for best direction, given in the past to famous personality in the world of cinema like French movie director Benoit Jacquot and Oscar winner Bille August, was given to Francesco Munzi for its Black Souls, an intense noir drama set in Africo in Calabria, dealing with the story of three brothers who belong to Calabria’s mafia, the ‘ndrangheta. Neapolitan director Pasquale Squitieri, who dedicated his life to the denunciation of social problems and to historical-political works, directing actors like Jean Seberg, Vittorio De Sica, Catherine Spaak and Giorgio Albertazzi, was given the Ischia Film Award for career achievement after the screening of his masterpiece Li chiamarono…briganti!, a historical movie set during the Savoy’s government, starring Claudia Cardinale, Enrico Lo Verso, Giorgio Albertazzi and Lina Sastri. Among the personalities who have participated in this edition, Italian directors Laura Bispuri and Edoardo De Angelis, actors Adriano Giannini, Lillo Petrolo (of the famous duo Lillo and Greg), Francesco Paolantoni, Enrico Lo Verso, Amiel Cavo and Giacomo Rizzo. Ischia Global Film & Music Fest. The Summer event of international cinema Ischia Global Film & Music Fest. L’evento dell’estate cinematografica internazionale A very rich program will be offered by this new edition of the Ischia Global Film & Music Fest: dedicated to cinema and music and conceived by Pascal Vicedomini, this event, which every July takes place in the island of Ischia, celebrates its 13th anniversary this year. The Festival opens with the screening of Boulevard by Dito Montiel – which sees the last interpretation of actor Robin Williams –at the Regina Isabella Hotel. Many celebrities come to the island: Antonio Banderas, who will be given the Ischia Legend Award, Andrea Bocelli and Jimmy Kimmel –who collect the Telegatto Special Award, Matteo Garrone for the Fantasy Award, Ezio Greggio with the King of Comedy. And then actress Helen Mirren (Ischia Legend Award , in the name of Luchino Visconti), Director Taylor Hackford (Ischia Legend Award), Film authors of the year Nicolas Winding Refn (European Movie Director) and Mario Martone (Best Film with Il Giovane Favoloso), Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs (Ischia Art Award for AMPAS), Grammy Foundation Preseident Neil Portnow and Netfilx Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos (Ischia Global Legend Award). One of the most important things introduced by this edition is the delivery of the Awards by Tv Sorrisi e Canzoni: Christian De Sica, Gabriel Garko and Andrea Bocelli collect the Telegatto Special Awards, respectively for Cinema, Television and music. Other famous international personalities are awarded as well, like film producer, director and set designer Lee Daniels, anchorman Jimmy Kimmel and record producer Clive Davis. Sailing around the world’s most magical island. A treat for the eyes and the palate Un giro intorno all’isola più magica del mondo. Incanto per gli occhi e per il palato It is since the days of ancient Rome (perhaps even earlier) that the island of Capri has been exerting a powerful allure on whoever sets foot on it. A mix of history, nature, socialite and cultural events, which has contributed to building the island’s legendary reputation. Although the inland is equally rich in natural beauties, the best way to see Capri is from the sea, by sailing around the island on a private boat equipped with a tender to explore the spectacular caves and inlets found along the way and to stop in one of the many lovely beach clubs and have a taste of the delicious Caprese cuisine. Our starting point is Marina Grande, the island’s main landing place, known for its colorful and picturesque houses. From here, we are ready to circumnavigate the island, heading east, to make the most of the hours of sunlight. On this side of the island, the water is bright green colored and not too deep. Our first stop is the so-called Grotta Meravigliosa, which is close to the more famous White Grotto, accessible only from the sea. It is one of the island’s most spectacular grottos because of its blinding white color and the amazing scenery created by the stalagmites and stalactites. About a quarter of mile ahead, there is an architectural treasure that cannot leave anyone unmoved: Villa Malaparte. From here, we can admire the Monacone rock and the three huge Faraglioni, beyond which the bay of Marina Piccola is visible. We are now on Capri’s southern side, where most of the island’s trendiest beach clubs are found. You will be spoilt for choice. The first one is Fontelina, set within steps of the crystal clear water lapping Capri’s legendary sea stacks. Try the homemade fresh pasta with fish sauce prepared by Chef Mario, paired with a glass of excellent wine or ice-cold sangria. Located slightly further ahead along the coast is the island’s most glamorous gathering place since 1936, Da Luigi ai Faraglioni. Ricca di bellezze anche nella zona dell’entroterra, il modo migliore per conoscere le meraviglie naturali dell’isola rimane un giro intorno alla costa con un’imbarcazione privata, dotata di tender per poter entrare nelle spettacolari grotte e insenature che s’incontrano durante tutto il tragitto, lungo il quale si trovano i suggestivi e caratteristici stabilimenti balneari, dove fermarsi per assaporare le deliziose specialità della cucina caprese. Il punto di partenza è Marina Grande, il principale approdo isolano, noto per le sue caratteristiche casette colorate, da qui salpiamo per il nostro personale periplo dell’isola, che procederà verso est, per godere al meglio delle ore di luce. Su questo versante le acque tendono a un bel verde e sono poco profonde. It is on all the postcards, posters and souvenirs. It is always photographed by tourists and it strikes the hours of the high society that swarms around the café tables. It stands on the bell tower, separate from the church of Santo Stefano and from the stairs of the Piazzetta, and chimes. One dial points towards the island’s parlour, while the other overlooks the sea. Per quest’ultimo l’orologio è un riferimento continuo, per prendere la funicolare o l’autobus, per ricordarsi l’appuntamento dato al tassista per scendere a Marina a Piccola o a Marina Grande, per avvisare il marinaio della barca di tenersi pronto. E quando arriva la scampanata di mezzogiorno si dirige verso la meta. A great exhibition project to recount the fascination the Pompeii archaeological site has held for artists and Europe’s collective imagination from the beginning of excavations in 1784 to its dramatic bombing on 24 August 1943. This is the theme of the Pompeii and Europe 1748 – 1943 exhibition on until 2 November at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples and simultaneously at the Amphitheatre in Pompeii, and part of a programme of events planned around Expo Milan 2015. Right from their fortuitous rediscovery, the buried cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii have attracted travellers and the curious, revolutionizing not only antiquary science but also the culture, art and life of modern times. Pompeii in particular is a site open to many interpretations. It is a story made up of different souls, stratified in time and themes, complex also in the magnitude of its effect on those who visit it. Every itinerary raises questions, to which a tour of the archaeological area gives only partial answers. It is the complexity of the daily, political and religious life of an ancient city ended suddenly by the catastrophic eruption of 79 AD. Pompeii’s legacy consists only partly of the houses, shops and public places that thousands of tourists visit every day. The rest lives a more obscure life, divided between the Archaeological Museum in Naples and the various storerooms of the Soprintendenza Speciale for Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabia. Un grande progetto espositivo per raccontare la suggestione evocata dal sito archeologico di Pompei sugli artisti e nell’immaginario europeo, dall’inizio degli scavi nel 1748 al drammatico bombardamento del 24 agosto 1943: è questo il tema della mostra Pompei e l’Europa. 1748 – 1943, fino al 2 novembre al Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli e in contemporanea all’Anfiteatro di Pompei, con il patrocinio di Expo Milano 2015. Sin dalla loro fortuita scoperta le metropoli sepolte di Ercolano e Pompei hanno attratto viaggiatori e curiosi, rivoluzionando non solo la scienza antiquaria, ma anche la cultura, l’arte e la vita dei moderni. In particolare Pompei è un luogo dai tanti percorsi di lettura. Una storia composta da anime diverse, stratificata nel tempo, nei temi, complessa anche nella dimensione del contatto con chi la visita. Ogni percorso suscita domande, possibilità di narrazione cui solo in minima parte risponde, nel dettaglio, la visita al parco archeologico. Thanks to this we could spare a lot of time and work and achieve a really extraordinary result. Spesso la differenza in un evento la fanno le luci e l’audio, capaci di trasformare l’impatto di una location vista tante volte in un luogo che lascia sbalorditi e catapulta l’osservatore nel fantastico, nel surreale. In questo Paolo Caiazzo titolare della Fx-Treme, è un artista, mago delle luci e re del suono, capace di far dire a Peppino di Capri, dopo oltre 50 anni di carriera, di non aver mai udito un suono così completo emesso da un impianto. Paolo, qual è il tuo obiettivo? La nostra offerta è pensata intorno a questo punto: trasformare audio, luci e video in un ricordo indelebile. Chi investe tempo e risorse in un evento di lusso a Capri ha un sogno da coronare. E vuole che suono, luci e video siano curati nei minimi dettagli. Quale lavoro ti ha soddisfatto in particolar modo? Ne facciamo davvero tanti ma ricordo nel 2014 con affetto l’evento di presentazione di Capri the Divine Coast alla Canzone del Mare in collaborazione con Salvatore Ferragamo. Fu un’installazione particolare in quanto non abbiamo avuto molto tempo per realizzare il tutto e la zona era vasta, per cui ci siamo affidati a tecnologia led a batteria con controllo wireless DMX. Questo ci ha permesso di risparmiare tanto lavoro e tempo, alla fine abbiamo ottenuto un risultato davvero eccellente. Nel 2015 non posso non citare il matrimonio di Edo Faiella a casa sua sulla collina del Castiglione. Little remains on our tables of the “old Island cuisine”, both because we should firstly establish what we mean by “past”, and because in the meantime, not only the basic ingredients and many condiments, but also tastes, society, man, animals, climate – practically everything – have changed. Before continuing, we should remember that when we speak of a generic “original” Island cuisine, we are speaking of a “poor”, and in some cases, a very poor, cuisine, relative to the social conditions of Capri’s peasants, fishermen and workers until at least the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries. One would find little meat, a fair amount of fish and lots of legumes and vegetables on their tables. To imagine the cuisine of the islanders “of the past”, we have to remember that vegetables and legumes were the mainstays of a “natural” diet that included some forerunners of today’s so-called Mediterranean cuisine or diet. It is equally clear that we will never find a “panful of little birds” or grilled quail, another typical and historic Capri dish, on our menus today. And what about the much-declaimed “ricottelle” (or “caciottelle”) cheeses enjoyed and praised as far back as the Seventeenth century by Bouchard? We could go on citing extraordinary and unrepeatable cianfotte - vegetable stews -, pasta and chickpeas, pasta and potatoes, fried artichokes, snails, rabbit “alla ciammurra” with anchovies, aubergine parmigiana and various vegetables preserved in oil – dishes enveloped in the mists of memories that are often deceptive or distorted by Proust syndrome: “Oh, the flavours of times past…” Reality brings us back to a present that at least sees the Capri raviolo – a symbol of local tradition – on the menus of almost all the Island’s restaurants, even if it is interpreted in some interesting versions. Rarely found, or in unusual versions, is pasta and chickpeas, then again like many other pastas and… Another protagonist of our island past, squid, is still present

E prima di continuare bisogna ricordare che quando parliamo di una generica cucina isolana “delle origini”, stiamo parlando di una cucina “povera”, in alcuni casi molto povera, in rapporto alle condizioni sociali di contadini, pescatori e lavoratori di Capri almeno fino alla fine dell’Ottocento e agli inizi del Novecento. Sui tavoli di questi ultimi si poteva trovare poca carne, abbastanza pesce e molti legumi e frutti della terra. Per immaginare una cucina degli isolani “di allora” dobbiamo ricordare che erano le verdure, gli ortaggi e i legumi a far da padroni in una dieta “naturale” che contiene, al suo interno, alcuni prodromi dell’odierna cosiddetta cucina o dieta mediterranea. È altrettanto chiaro che non potremmo più trovare, oggi, nei nostri menu una “padellata di uccelletti”, o una grigliata di quaglie, altra tipica e storica pietanza caprese. E cosa dire delle tanto declamate ricottelle (o caciottelle) degustate ed esaltate già nel Seicento dal Bouchard? Potremmo continuare citando straordinarie e irripetibili cianfotte, paste e cicerchie, paste e patate, fave, carciofi fritti, lumache, conigli “alla ciammurra”, parmigiane di melanzane, ortaggi vari sott’olio: pietanze avvolte dalla nebbia di memorie spesso fallaci e distorte da sindrome proustiana: “ah! i sapori di un tempo che fu...”. La realtà ci riporta a una attualità che vede, in ogni caso, il raviolo caprese - simbolo della cucina tradizionale locale - presente in quasi tutti i menu dei ristoranti isolani, anche se interpretato con alcune interessanti varianti. Poco presente, o declinata in singolari versioni, è la pasta e cicerchie come, d’altronde, molte altre paste e... The Cuisine in Capri combines the local tradition and the cuisine of the luxury 19th-Century hotels of Capri on our tables. Not so much the old “stuffed squid” version, as much as a more simple “squid and potatoes”; this dish must have been created only in the second half of the Nineteenth century since the tuber was introduced on the Island only around 1830. Widely available, of course, are fish, shellfish and mussel dishes, with a notable series of versions with little of a specific and identifiable Island culinary nature. Finally, there is a significant presence in our restaurants of versions and reworkings of baccalà, perhaps ascribable to the presence on Capri in the Eighteenth century of the English baronet, Nathaniel Thorold, who as the first importer of salted codfish to Italy introduced it to his “acquired” fellow islanders. Generally, compared with some years ago, there is a perceptible return to the “territory”, intended as a recovery of the Island’s culinary traditions, with interesting experimentation and variations on the theme. It has to be said that there is a substantial “infidelity” to socalled “tradition” in the recipes proposed, which results from the origins themselves of what for convenience we call local cuisine. To trace this original “infidelity”, we have to try to understand not only what the islanders ate, but what remains of that which was offered on the tables d’hótel of the Pagano or in the Quisisana’s restaurant in the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries. The cuisine in Capri’s hotels almost certainly had to be adapted to the nationalities of the guests, to their desires, their meal times and their culinary foibles, with little concession to traditional local recipes. So at the Pagano the cuisine tended to be of German ancestry, while at the Quisisana there must have been an Anglo-Saxon note to the food. In those times there was no great circulation of ideas and food trends, and even less was Italian cuisine fully accepted by tourists from Northern Europe, strongly attached to the foods and condiments of their respective countries, with prejudices and refusals towards the use of olive oil and other Mediterranean condiments and ingredients. It is equally clear that it was the big hotels which could allow themselves more “national” cuisines, while the many hotels and boarding houses of a lesser category were perhaps able to pass off various local dishes or generically Italian cuisine on their menus, among which pasta with tomato sauce predominated of course. Local produce such as eggs, vegetables and fish were also used for generic soups and equally vague fischgang (fish) or fleischgang (meat) courses. 132 Capri | The Divine Coast
è sempre presente sulle nostre tavole non tanto con la storica versione del “totano imbottito”, quanto con una più semplice “totani e patate”: piatto questo che deve essere nato solo nella seconda metà dell’Ottocento in quanto il tubero venne introdotto sull’isola solo intorno al 1830. Diffusi, ovviamente, i piatti a base di pesce, crostacei e mitili, con una serie notevole di varianti poco riconducibili a uno specifico ed identificabile carattere culinario insulare. Significativa, infine, la presenza nei nostri ristoranti di varianti ed elaborazioni del baccalà, forse riconducibile alla presenza nella Capri settecentesca del baronetto inglese Nathaniel Thorold che, come primo importatore del pesce salato in Italia, lo fece conoscere ai suoi compaesani “acquisiti”. Si avverte, in generale, rispetto ad alcuni anni or sono, un ritorno al “territorio”, inteso appunto come recupero di tipicità culinarie dell’Isola con interessanti sperimentazioni e variazioni sul tema. Nelle ricette proposte si deve registrare, rispetto alla cosiddetta “tradizione”, una sostanziale e proficua “infedeltà” che nasce dalla genesi stessa di quella che, per comodità, chiamiamo cucina locale. Per cercare di risalire a questa originale natura “infedele” cerchiamo di capire, oltre a ciò che mangiavano gli isolani, cosa ci resta di quello che veniva offerto, a fine Ottocento o inizi Novecento, sulle tables d’hótel del Pagano o nel ristorante del Quisisana. Quasi sicuramente la cucina degli alberghi di Capri doveva adattarsi alle nazionalità dei frequentatori, ai loro desiderata, ai loro orari, alle loro gerarchie culinarie, poco concedendo alle tipiche ricette locali: cosicché come al Pagano si tendeva ad una cucina con ascendenze teutoniche, così al Quisisana doveva esser presente la nota gastronomica anglosassone. Non esisteva, allora, una grande circolazione delle idee e delle tendenze gastronomiche né, tanto meno, la cucina italiana era pienamente accettata da turisti nordici, fortemente legati ad alimenti e condimenti dei loro rispettivi paesi con speculari preconcetti e rifiuti verso l’utilizzo, per esempio, dell’olio di oliva e di altri condimenti ed ingredienti mediterranei. È altrettanto chiaro che erano i grand hotel a potersi permettere cucine più “nazionali” mentre i tanti alberghi e pensioni di categoria inferiori forse riuscivano a far passare nei loro menu varie pietanze della cucina locale o di una generica cucina italiana tra cui prevaleva, naturalmente, la pasta asciutta con pomodoro. Prodotti locali come uova, verdure, ortaggi, pesce, venivano poi utilizzati anche per generiche zuppe e altrettanto vaghi fischgang (pesce) o fleischgang (carni).

Fascino sospeso tra cielo e mare A private villa designed by famous architect, Le Corbusier. That was in the ‘Twenties, and since then this stunning building set amidst greenery and overlooking the azure sea around the Faraglioni has come a long way. During World War II it was used as the headquarters of the American Command in Italy, and hosted illustrious guests such as Sir Winston Churchill, who was a habitué. It was transformed into the present Hotel Punta Tragara in 1968. Its enviable position, the beauty of its gardens and terraces, the myriad services provided and the interior recently restyled by architect Giorgia Dennerlein, make it a benchmark for hospitality on Capri What is your relationship with the Island of Capri? Every time I think of Capri, my five senses rejoice at the thought of the flavours, fragrances and beauty this island emanates. It has been a pleasure to be able to get to know it and to experience it in all weathers and all months, each with its own colours and definitely its own scents. The location of Hotel Punta Tragara means it is particularly susceptible to changes in the weather, surrounded as it is by nature, set amid Mediterranean vegetation and perched high over the sea. A sea which is in its turn dominated by cliffs and two majestic sculptures, the Faraglioni, that vibrate in the light and form a constantly changing picture. What changes did you make to the interior of the hotel? My work was informed by careful observation and respect for the existing rooms, with some furnishings that were already here being refurbished and new pieces being selectively integrated. The aim was to create rooms that were one different to the other by mixing and blending old and new, and luminous spaces that highlighted the architecture of the building, such as the communal areas, the stairs and the foyer – all in colors that evoke this wonderful island. Every guest knows that their room is unique. Some style details? Furniture is essentially Italian design, ceramic objects range from traditional to the most modern, wallpapers are inspired by Mediterranean patterns and colours are as bright and lively as Vietri pottery. 140 Capri | The Divine Coast

Erano gli anni Venti, e da allora questa splendida struttura immersa nella natura e affacciata sull’azzurro del mare che circonda i Faraglioni ne ha vista di strada. Adibita a sede del Comando Americano durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, frequentata da ospiti illustri - Sir. Winston Churchill era un habitué -, fu trasformata nell’attuale hotel Punta Tragara nel 1968. Oggi l’hotel è per la sua posizione invidiabile, la bellezza dei suoi spazi e i molteplici servizi offerti, uno dei punti di riferimento dell’hotellerie caprese, i cui ambienti sono stati recentemente opera di restyling a cura dell’architetto Giorgia Dennerlein. Qual è il suo rapporto con l’isola di Capri? Ogni volta che penso a Capri i miei cinque sensi si esaltano avendo perfettamente vivi i sapori, i profumi, la bellezza che questa isola emana. E’ stato un piacere avere la possibilità di conoscerla e di viverla così a lungo in ogni mese e clima dell’anno che ne ha distinto i colori e sicuramente gli odori. La location dell’Hotel Punta Tragara è esposta più che mai ai cambiamenti che sono dovuti al clima, essendo avvolta dalla natura, immersa nella vegetazione mediterranea e esposta a picco sul mare. Un mare che a sua volta sembra essere dominato dagli scogli e da due sculture maestose quali i Faraglioni che fanno vibrare la luce e ne determinano un quadro in mutamento continuo. Come è intervenuta all’interno dell’hotel? Il mio intervento è stato caratterizzato da un’attenta osservazione e rispetto degli ambienti preesistenti con la riqualificazione di alcuni arredi già in sede ed una integrazione mirata di nuovi. Lo scopo, miscelando e contaminando con questi ultimi, era dare vita a camere diverse l’una dall’altra e ad ambienti luminosi che esaltassero le architetture del fabbricato quali le parti comuni, la scala e la hall. Il tutto qualificato dai colori che ci ricordano questa isola meravigliosa. Ogni viaggiatore sa che la sua propria stanza è unica. Qualche dettaglio di stile? Gli arredi sono di design prettamente italiano, gli oggetti di ceramica sono dai tradizionali ai più contemporanei, i parati sono ispirati a fantasie mediterranee e i colori sono vivaci come le maioliche di Vietri.
