BRIEF GUIDE TO SALONE DEL MOBILE All you need to know about the sixtieth edition of the world’s most important design platform TEXT Teresa Favi

DESIGN

The world’s most important design fair

T

he 60th edition of the Salone del Mobile, from 7 to 12 June at Fiera Milano Rho, is a major landmark, celebrated through the key values of the event: quality, innovation, beauty and - today more than ever - sustainability. These are the words of the exhibition’s new president Maria Porro during the presentation of this edition, which is so important and also symbolic, as the first physical gathering since the pandemic. So the aim is ambitious: to show that it is possible, and necessary, to get back to holding large-scale international events face to face, combining environmental criteria with furniture production. In this edition, businesses 32

and creatives can gain firsthand knowledge of alternative materials already being manufactured, be inspired by the vision of urban areas as potential mines for raw materials, and reflect on the function of the home as a cell in a more complex organism: the city. Here’s what’s new. DESIGN WITH NATURE The world’s most important design fair promises more simplicity and immediacy, in the interests of sustainability. Environmental and social welfare is the theme of Design with Nature, an installation designed by architect Mario Cucinella to mark the anniversary of the Salone and located in Pavilion 15: 1,400 square metres explore

the future of living, starting from the idea that the city can be a potential “reservoir” of raw materials useful in construction. Design with Nature shows that we can imagine another way to design and manufacture products without consuming raw materials but by activating virtuous ecological pathways. THE SATELLITE SALONE The Satellite Salone plays a key role in this edition as the driver of innovation and creativity in the sector, and this is why it dominates the first section of the fair, with more than 600 exhibitors under 35 coming together with the theme Designing for our Future Selves: an invitation to reflect on inclusive design that focuses on auton-

PARK HYATT MILANO Via Tommaso Grossi, 1 ph. +39 02 88211234 hyatt.com There’s a new vision of design in the Isola neighbourhood. The raised pedestrian walkway that connects Corso Como to the Isola district is comparable to New York’s High Line. In the late 19th-century industrial building that houses the Fondazione Riccardo Catella, founded to showcase memories of the local area, the ground floor is occupied by the Ratanà restaurant. Not far away is Via Vincenzo Capelli, which leads to Piazza Gae Aulenti, famous for its art installations, water features, lighting effects and skyscrapers. Other restaurants in the area are Cantine Milano (trendy), Gino Sorbillo Isola (pizza) and Cormorano (traditional). Winebars: BOB and Deus. 36

omy, comfort, movement, usability, interaction and safety. The new layout is modelled on the Italian piazza, underlining the concept of the Salone as a connective place for meeting and networking. TALKS Finally, three talks, open to the public in person and via live streaming, will address important issues such as the history of design, with Chiara Alessi, digital frontiers in interiors with Beatrice Leanza, and the relationship between sustainability and design companies with Maria Cristina Didero. BATHROOMS AND KITCHENS This year’s Salone del Mobile once again occupies the entire exhibition area, with more than 2,000 exhibitors, including the biennial EuroCucina and its collateral event FTK (Technology For the Kitchen) and the International Bathroom Exhibition. We also see the return of S.Project, a showcase for designer products and solutions for surfaces.

THE SALONE IN TOWN Last but not least, the city offers a multitude of events. The Salone’s collaboration with Teatro della Scala returns, opening the programme with a concert of the Milan Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by maestro Lorenzo Viotti, followed by a ballet starring Roberto Bolle. In addition to the FuoriSalone events, scattered all over the city centre but also in peripheral neighbourhoods, from 7 to 17 June, Palazzo Reale presents La Scatola Magica, a major film installation involving the screening of 11 short films by Italian directors, inspired by the 11 values that have marked the 60-year history of the Salone. To turn the occasion into a memorable experience through the language of film and theatre, Davide Rampello invited Francesca Archibugi, Pappi Corsicato, Wilma Labate, Bruno Bozzetto, Luca Lucini, Claudio Giovannesi, Gianni Canova, Donato Carrisi, Daniele Ciprì and Stefano Mordini.

NATURE AND ELEGANCE Lake Como - everything you need to know to truly experience the beauty of this unique place TEXT Virginia Mammoli

ONE OF THE MOST PLEASANT THINGS TO DO ON THE LAKE IS TO TAKE A BOAT RIDE

S

plendid villas, many now luxury hotels, well-tended gardens, enchanting medieval villages overlooking the water, corners of pure peace and tranquility… Lake Como is a perfect combination of nature and elegance that attracts visitors from all over the world, including no end of celebrities, who come here mainly for pleasure, but sometimes also for work, perhaps to shoot some scenes in this incomparable settings. There are also those who have a second home here, like George Clooney, who twenty or so years ago bought the 18th century Villa Oleandra in Laglio where his Hollywood friends are guests from time to time. Long before the celebrities, writers and intellectuals who became enamoured of this magical place include Alessandro Manzoni - with “that branch of Lake Como…” where his story of the two betrothed begins 48

Stendhal and Lord Byron. One of the most pleasant things to do on the lake, of course, is to take a boat ride to enjoy the views of the shores, lulled by the gentle rocking of the water. But let’s go into more detail and discover not to be missed places. Lecco and Como, the two main towns overlooking the lake, are definitely worth a visit, while must-sees among the villages are Bellagio, called the pearl of Lario (as the lake is also known); picturesque, enchanting Nesso, with its Orrido, a natural ravine where two streams merge to form a waterfall; Varenna, where you can visit the splendid Villa Monastero botanical gardens that extend for almost 2 km along the lakeside; Cernobbio, the little town beloved of the jet set and the site of Villa d’Este, today a luxury hotel and home to the Concorso d’Eleganza celebrating the mystique of

historic cars, and Villa Erba, the setting for some scenes in Ocean’s Twelve; Lenno, from where you can admire the Golfo di Venere and Villa del Balbianello - the set of scenes in James Bond 007 Casino Royale and Star Wars - The Attack of the Clones -

SPLENDID VILLAS AND GARDENS, ENCHANTING MEDIEVAL VILLAGES AND CORNERS OF PURE PEACE AND TRANQUILITY and finally, Gravedona, for a leisurely lakeside stroll. Lake Como is also synonymous with outdoor sports, a chance to keep fit while enjoying fresh air, a mild climate and beautiful lake scenery. For those who enjoy walking or cycling, there is

San Martino: approximately 40 minutes’ climb for a bird’s eye view of the Bellagio peninsula, the Grigna mountains and Varenna. 2. Rifugio Menaggio: a mediumaltitude excursion in the mountains of Breglia to the Rifugio Menaggio. From here there are two options for Monte Grona: the via ferrata for experts, and the ‘Direttissima’. 3. Argegno - Pigra cable car: considered the most beautiful terrace in the Comasco Prealps; Pigra is the starting point for excursions to Monte Galbiga and Alpe di Colonno. 52

the Greenway, an 11.5k lakeside route that goes from Colonno to Cadenabbia and Menaggio, passing through Sala Comacina, Ossuccio, Lenno, Mezzegra, Tremezzo and Griante, past villas, churches, museums and medieval towers along the way. The best known stop is Villa Carlotta (in Tremezzo), famous for another splendid botanical garden, a kaleidoscope of colours and scents all your round, and for its art collection, with works by Canova, Hayez and Thorvaldsen. Also meriting a visit is the Orrido di Bellano, a spectacular ravine carved by the Pioverna river, which can be viewed from a system of wooden footbridges anchored to the high walls overlooking the water. For watersports lovers, however, the destination not to be missed is Colico where the wind blows constantly, ideal for kitesurfing, windsurfing and sailing, aided perhaps by its natural back-

drop, the 2,500 metres-high Monte Legnone which, needless to say, is perfect for those looking forward to some mountain hikes. Before we conclude, we must mention the only island in the lake: Isola Comacina, famous for its lush vegetation and archaeological heritage dating from Roman times. It is here that the Sagra di San Giovanni - the oldest festival on the lake - takes place on the last weekend in June with a spectacular fireworks display in memory of the fire that devastated the island in 1169. On the Sunday morning, a procession of historic boats starts from the Church of Sant’Eufemia di Ossuccio, followed in the afternoon by the regatta between the Lucias - the traditional Lake Como boats on which Manzoni imagined Lucia Mondella and Renzo Tramaglino’s escape from the wicked Don Rodrigo starts from Ossuccio and finishes at Sala Comacina.

I FOUND MY LOVE IN… Portofino and surrounds. Everything you need to know for an unforgettable weekend or holiday TEXT Teresa Favi

Portofino is one of the world’s most picturesque seaside villages (ph. Matthew Deblieux) 55

ITINERARY

RETRO CHARM, HISTORICAL MONUMENTS AND DIVING WITH UNIQUE VIEWS

I

t was the 1950s, and Portofino portrayed them through the flash photos of the paparazzi: scarves fluttering from convertibles along the coast, smiles, motorboats at anchor. The charm is unchanged, decades later for those who meet up in the Piazzetta, with many reasons to return to one of the world’s most picturesque seaside villages. So Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker must also have thought when they organized their wedding in Portofino at the end of May, hosted by Dolce & Gabbana. But here are the things not to be missed on a trip to Portofino. THE OLD VILLAGE A parade of houses like a stage set encircling the little harbour, in warm shades of amber, ochre and green. We are in Liguria, on the Riviera di Levante, and this delightful bay set between the Gulf of 56

Tigullio and the Portofino Regional Park, always a favourite destination for entertainment and nightlife, every year attracts Italian and foreign visitors, lovers of sailing holidays, luxury, but also history and natural beauty. Among the sights to visit are the Oratory of Santa Maria Assunta, a splendid example of Ligurian Gothic, the Church of San Martino and the Church of San Giorgio which can be reached by taking a walk up to headland where it stands, beyond which are also Castello Brown and the Punta di Capo lighthouse, from where you can enjoy unforgettable sunsets over the Gulf. In the old village of Portofino there is the Church dedicated to Santo Martin of Tours, dating back to the 12th century, in Lombard Romanesque style, as is the Church of San Giorgio.

CASTELLO BROWN The first official records relating to the Castle date back to 1425, when Tomaso Fregoso, Doge of the Republic, occupied the village of Portofino and its fortress. Besieged several times, in 1867 it was bought by the British Consul, Sir Montague Yeats Brown, who carried out works to enlarge it, which he entrusted to the architect Alfredo d’Andrade. Among the most significant changes, in addition to the towers, was the transformation of the ancient parade ground into a hanging garden with native maritime pines. CHRIST OF THE ABYSS Among the wonders of a trip to Portofino there is one entirely dedicated to diving enthusiasts, who can enjoy a close up view of the famous Christ of the Abyss on the seabed of the Marine Protected Area. In 1954 the bronze statue

EXCELSIOR PALACE HOTEL Rapallo, Genoa Portofino Alongside the wonderful fishing port, in Portofino you shouldn’t miss the views from the church of San Giorgio and the lighthouse. Portofino has no beach, but 1 kilometre in the direction of Santa Margherita Ligure is Paraggi, a magnificent bay with a sandy beach and a restaurant, Langosteria (Bagni Fiore) serving excellent and super-fresh fish. Other Portofino restaurants include Dai gemelli, O magazine, Taverna del marinaio, Puny and Strainer. American bars: Winterose and La gritta. For typical products, La Portofinese. 58

was placed on the seabed in San Fruttuoso Bay, between Camogli and Portofino, within the Marine Protected Natural Area. It is located at a depth of 17 meters and was created by sculptor Guido Galletti. Every year special dives are organized to visit it, which always attract divers from all over the world. NATURE A trip to Portofino is also a journey into nature, between the deep blue of the sea and the green of a luxuriant Mediterranean park. The entire Portofino Marine Protected Area can be explored on a series of signposted trails with frequent information panels. The Regional Natural Park of Portofino lies to the east of Genoa and comprises the promontory that overlooks the Gulf of Tigullio. BEACHES Paraggi beach, together with the small Niasca beach, is hidden among

the rocks of Paraggi bay: behind is the Monte Portofino Park, and in front, the waters of the Marine Protected Area. The bay is shared between the municipalities of Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino and is situated in a strategic position that allows you to explore the nature of both the park on land and the marine reserve. You can reach Punta Cajeca from Paraggi beach by SUP or kayak in a few minutes. This spot separates Paraggi bay from Portofino bay. Furthermore, from this particular point you have an almost complete view of the eastern coast of Liguria, stretching from Santa Margherita, Rapallo, Chiavari, Sestri Levante as far as the Cinque Terre Park and the Portovenere headland. On clear days it is not difficult to spot the outlines of Palmaria and Tino islands in the distance.

CASA DEGLI ATELLANI & LEONARDO’S VINEYARD

While Leonardo da Vinci was in Milan, Duke Ludovico il Moro gave him a vineyard in the centre of the city in appreciation for the magnificent works he was creating to embellish the ducal city.

This was Leonardo’s Vineyard: reopened to the public for Expo 2015, the vineyard is located near Santa Maria delle Grazie, in the courtyard of Casa degli Atellani, the fifteenth-century residence of Ludovico il Moro and the last remaining trace of the ancient Borgo delle Grazie. Corso Magenta, 65 ph. +39 02 25061895 casadegliatellani.it

It was originally a fortress built by Gian Galeazzo Visconti in the 15th century. One hundred years later, Francesco Sforza made it his noble residence after taking possession of Milan. Ludovico Sforza founded one of the most sophisticated courts in Europe and called the best artists of the time to embellish the castle, including Leonardo da Vinci and Filarete. The imposing building today is a unique museum complex divided into the Civic Museums, which house permanent exhibitions and a rich program of temporary art shows and events. It includes the Museum of Ancient Art, the Egyptian Museum, the Museum of Prehistory and Protohistory, the Museum of Applied Arts, the Museum of Musical Instruments, the Museum of Furniture and Wooden Sculptures, the Trivulziana Library, the Pinacoteca, and the Pietà Rondanini. MUDEC - MUSEUM OF CULTURES

The Museum of Cultures project dates back to 1990, when the City of Milan purchased the former industrial Ansaldo area to use it for cultural activities. The disused factories, veritable monuments of industrial archeology, were converted into workshops, studios and new creative spaces. It is now a multidisciplinary center devoted to different cultures across the world and houses great international exhibitions. Via Tortona, 56 ph. +39 02 54917
