How did this idea originate?

After university, I started working as an international reporter and I lived a rather nomad-like life in various European cities. Having to spend a couple of months in each of these places, I tried to personalize my houses with fresh flowers. When I decided to come back to live in Rome, I brought this need with me, which gave rise to the idea of ​​creating an online flower subscription to provide a service, generally considered a luxury, as a healthy and simple habit.

Why the name Flority Fair?

Flority is a word that does not exist, just as there was previously no e-commerce for flowers, and fair means just, equitable, and reflects the attention I have towards our planet.

How did you start?

At the beginning I went door to door to propose a flower subscription to the shops, now they come to us, and there are ten of us working on this project.

What is the goal of Flority Fair?

To make people understand the importance of choosing seasonal flowers and to try to spread the idea of environmental sustainability. Even in our packaging we are essential; our flowers, unless requested, never come packaged.

Come è nata questa idea?

Dopo l’università ho iniziato a lavorare come reporter internazionale e ho vissuto un po’ da nomade in varie città europee. Dovendo stare un paio di mesi in ognuno di questi luoghi, cercavo di personalizzare le mie abitazioni con fiori freschi. Quando ho deciso di tornare a vivere a Roma ho portato con me questa esigenza da cui è nata l’idea di creare un abbonamento on line ai fiori per fornire un servizio considerato di lusso come una sana e semplice abitudine.

Perché il nome Flority Fair?

Flority è una parola che non esiste come non esisteva un e-commerce dei fiori e fair significa giusto, equo e rispecchia l’attenzione che ho verso il nostro pianeta.

Come ha iniziato?

All’inizio andavo porta a porta a proporre ai negozi un abbonamento di fiori, ora ci cercano e siamo in dieci a lavorare a questo progetto.

Qual è l’obiettivo di Flority Fair?

Far capire alle persone l’importanza di scegliere i fiori di stagione e cercare di diffondere la sostenibilità ambientale. Anche nel packaging siamo essenziali, i nostri fiori, a meno che non venga richiesto, non arrivano mai confezionati.

Un fiore per ogni stagione.

In primavera, i fiori di pesco, in estate la godenzia, in autunno la celosia e in inverno la brassica.

Tell us about your first experience as a hotelier.

Almost seven years ago, after having created and gone to look at hundreds of five-star hotels around the world, I decided to create one of my own, the D.O.M. Hotel on Via Giulia. I wanted to get past the clichés of luxury hotels and favor comfort and a refined discreet atmosphere typical of a noble private residence, blending the building’s antique original features with Italian design furnishings.

What is your philosophy?

Every task that is assigned to me, I think of as my own personal project. So I designed the suites in Palazzo Dama as if they were my cozy dwellings, the Raspoutine club as if it were my own wonderful venue, and the Pacifico, my favorite restaurant. By interpreting the client’s wishes, I attempt to create private unique experiences that can’t be repeated, adding brands, and combining research and experimentation. The keywords are technologies, innovative materials, social responsibility and sustainable environmental development.

What are your plans for the future?

At the moment, I’m working on fifteen hotels and restaurants, including the Hotel d’Inghilterra and the Grand Meliá in Rome, the Hotel Helvetia & Bristol in Florence and Il Riccio in Capri, as well as villas and private houses. I’d like to design a Trenitalia carriage tailored to my tastes, because I spend a lot of time on the train. I can’t stop. If I did I would shut down, but I would like to enjoy more time with my 4-year-old daughter.

Antonio Girardi is a thirty-seven-year-old architect. He was born in Naples but considers himself to be cosmopolitan.

Ci racconti della sua prima esperienza da albergatore...

Quasi sette anni fa, dopo avere creato e girato centinaia di alberghi cinque stelle in giro per il mondo, ho deciso di crearne uno mio, il D.O.M Hotel in via Giulia. Ho voluto superare i cliché dell’hôtellerie di lusso a favore del comfort e di un’atmosfera raffinata e confidenziale tipica di una nobile dimora privata, fondendo antichi elementi originali dell’edificio con arredi di design italiano.

Qual è la sua filosofia?

Considero ogni compito che mi viene assegnato un mio progetto personale. Per cui ho disegnato le suites di Palazzo Dama come fossero mie dimore accoglienti, il club Raspoutine come fosse il mio locale più bello e Pacifico il mio ristorante preferito. Interpretando i desideri del cliente, cerco di creare esperienze private e irripetibili, abbinando brand e combinando ricerca e sperimentazione. Le parole chiave sono tecnologie, materiali innovativi, responsabilità sociale e sviluppo ambientale sostenibile.

Progetti per il futuro?

Al momento sto lavorando a quindici alberghi e ristoranti, tra cui l’Hotel d’Inghilterra e il Grand Meliá a Roma, l’Hotel Helvetia & Bristol a Firenze e Il Riccio a Capri, oltre a ville e case private. Mi piacerebbe disegnare un vagone Trenitalia su misura per me, perché ci passo moltissimo tempo. Non riesco a fermarmi sennò mi spengo, ma vorrei godermi di più mia figlia di 4 anni.

When did you enter the restaurant world?

When I arrived in Italy, I studied at a hotel school and started working at the Taverna Flavia. Twenty-one years ago I opened the Osteria dell’Oca, and just recently I decided to open this jewel, La Penna d’Oca. I felt ready for a more important restaurant.

What is the most popular dish of the Penna d’Oca? We work with products that are all of the highest quality, both fish and meat. Here with us, the dishes featuring raw fish are a must: tartare, carpaccio, scampi, but also Belluga caviar, while the first courses that we sell the most are spaghettoni with clams and bottarga and fregola with seafood.

What is the key element for the success of a restaurant?

Giving a nice smile. A cordial welcome is essential to making guests feel at home and relaxed. Besides, obviously, the quality of the food and fair prices, it is important to instill the joy of going to a place, by creating a warm atmosphere in a lovely setting. As soon as our guests arrive we immediately serve them a glass of champagne, and then little sweets at the end of the meal as an extra treat.

What is your favorite place in Rome?

I love Piazza del Popolo, just a few steps from my restaurants.

The first thing I do in the morning before going to work is to stop for coffee at Canova or Rosati.

Quando è entrato nel mondo della ristorazione?

Quando sono arrivato in Italia ho fatto la scuola alberghiera e ho iniziato a lavorare alla Taverna Flavia. Ventuno anni fa ho aperto l’Osteria dell’Oca e ora ho voluto aprire questo gioiello, La Penna d’Oca. Mi sentivo pronto per un ristorante più importante.

Qual è il piatto forte della Penna d’Oca? Lavoriamo con tutti prodotti di primissima scelta, sia di pesce che di carne. I crudi di pesce da noi sono un must: tartare, carpaccio, scampi, ma anche caviale Belluga mentre il primo che vendiamo di più sono gli spaghettoni con vongole e bottarga e la fregola con frutti di mare.

Qual è l’elemento chiave per la riuscita di un ristorante?

Regalare un bel sorriso. L’accoglienza è fondamentale per far sentire il cliente accolto e rilassato. Oltre ovviamente alla qualità del cibo e a un giusto prezzo, è importante infondere la gioia di andare in un posto, ricreare un ambiente caldo e un bel locale. Appena arrivano ai nostri ospiti offriamo subito un bicchiere di champagne e dei dolcetti a fine pasto per addolcirsi il palato.

Qual è il suo luogo preferito di Roma?

Amo piazza del Popolo, a due passi dai miei ristoranti. La prima cosa che faccio la mattina prima di andare a lavoro è fermarmi a prendere il caffè da Canova o da Rosati.

How were Miamo and Nutraiuvens created?

Ours is a family project in which we have combined all our various competencies: in addition to mine, that of my husband, who is a plastic surgeon, and of my children. Giovanni attended Bocconi University in Milan, and he is the company’s managerial soul. Camilla is a pharmacist, like me, and she has discovered the anti-aging molecules that our products are based on. Miamo, a line of cosmeceuticals for skin of all ages, was created first, and then Nutraiuvens, a line of nutraceuticals, that is, functional dietary supplements.

What is the aim of Miamo?

Miamo is designed to accompany the various stages of human life, to take each individual by hand and accompany them in a journey going from the aesthetic problems related to adolescence, such as acne and spots, up to those related to aging skin and its various problems.

Let’s talk about Nutraiuvens.

Nutraiuvens starts from the premise that healthy skin is also the result of a healthy body. Nutraiuvens dietary supplements nourish the skin from within.

Where are these products found?

They are found in pharmacies throughout Italy, in Switzerland and in Montecarlo. However, we get requests for them from various parts of the world and for this reason one of our next projects will be aimed at the internationalization of our brands.

Countess Elena Aceto di Capriglia comes from a noble Neapolitan family. She is a pharmacist, specialized in cosmetic and aesthetic dermatology and founder of the Medspa company that produces innovative cosmeceuticals and nutraceuticals: Miamo and Nutraiuvens. Together with the family, she has initiated a project that has revolutionized the concept of beauty 22 Roma | the Eternal City

Come nascono Miamo e Nutraiuvens?

Il nostro è un progetto familiare nel quale abbiamo unito tutte le competenze: oltre alle mie, quella di mio marito, che è un chirurgo plastico, e dei miei figli. Giovanni ha frequentato l’Università Bocconi di Milano, ed è l’anima manageriale dell’azienda.

Camilla è farmacista come me e ha scoperto alcune molecole per l’antinvecchiamento su cui si basano i nostri prodotti. Prima è nata Miamo, linea di cosmeceutici di tutte le età della pelle, poi Nutraiuvens, linea di nutraceutici, ovvero integratori funzionali.

Qual è l’obiettivo di Miamo?

Miamo è studiata per accompagnare le varie fasi della vita dell’uomo, per prendere per mano e accompagnare l’individuo in un itinerario che va dai problemi estetici legati all’adolescenza, quindi acne e macchie, fino quelli legati all’invecchiamento cutaneo e le sue varie problematiche.

Parliamo di Nutraiuvens.

Nutraiuvens parte dal presupposto che la pelle sana è anche il risultato di un organismo in salute. Gli integratori Nutraiuvens nutrono la pelle da dentro.

Dove si trovano questi prodotti?

Sono presenti nelle farmacie di tutta Italia, in Svizzera, a Montecarlo. Abbiamo però richieste da varie parti del mondo e per questo motivo uno dei prossimi progetti è quello dell’internazionalizzazione dei nostri marchi.

How did your passion for jewelry begin?

It is a passion that I have had since childhood. My favorite game and dream was to get into the safe and try on everything. My grandmother started the business, first as a collector of antique jewelry and then as a designer. Since 1975 my family has had a shop in Via Fontanella Borghese.

Where do you find inspiration?

My grandmother taught me to look around and take inspiration from the culture we breathe. Railings, pavements and columns are a good source of inspiration for us. Our jewels are bold pieces, that make a statement.

What materials do you use?

We often use the combination of precious stones with “poor” materials such as burnished silver, carbon and palladium, with the aim of making precious jewels wearable even in everyday life. Instead, in my Seliti line – which has just been launched - I use only silver and leather.

Where does the name Seliti come from?

From the union of my name, Livia, with the names of my brothers Sebastiano and Tiberio, who have always supported me in this adventure.

What is Seliti’s goal?

I would like this line to be the springboard for entering large-scale international distribution channels with pieces made by hand in Italy, while maintaining affordable prices and a strong character.

Livia Fazioli is a young 24-year-old woman who creates jewelry and, together with her mother and grandmother, runs their family company, Hedy Martinelli. With the aim of expanding into large-scale retail distribution, she has created a new prêt-à-porter jewelry line aimed at a younger target: Seliti 24 Roma | the Eternal City

Come è nata questa passione per i gioielli? È una passione che ho fin da piccolina. Il mio gioco preferito e sogno era quello di entrare nella cassaforte e provarmi tutto. È stata mia nonna a iniziare l’attività, prima come collezionista di gioielli di antiquariato poi come disegnatrice. Dal 1975 la mia famiglia ha un negozio in via Fontanella Borghese.

Da dove prendete le vostre ispirazioni?

Mia nonna mi ha insegnato a guardarmi intorno e a prendere le ispirazioni dalla cultura che respiriamo. Una buona fonte d’ispirazione sono per noi le ringhiere, i pavimenti e le colonne. I nostri sono gioielli incisivi, che vestono.

Che materiali utilizzate?

Utilizziamo molto il connubio di pietre preziose con materiali poveri quale l’argento brunito, il carbonio e il palladio, con l’obiettivo di rendere indossabili i gioielli preziosi anche nella vita quotidiana.

Nella mia linea Seliti - appena lanciata - utilizzo invece solo l’argento e il cuoio.

Da dove viene il nome Seliti?

Dall’unione di Livia e dei nomi dei miei fratelli Sebastiano e Tiberio, che mi hanno sempre sostenuta in quest’ avventura.

Qual è l’obiettivo di Seliti?

Vorrei che questa linea fosse il trampolino di lancio per entrare nella grande distribuzione internazionale con pezzi fatti a mano in Italia, mantenendo prezzi accessibili e un carattere deciso.

Being the odd one out comes naturally to her. She’s heavenly, occasionally icy, with her ultra-blond hair, light skin and slender, wiry frame, but warm, kind and courteous when you speak to her. It’s a gift of the greats, and she, Patty Pravo, is undoubtedly one of the greats. She was barely 18 years old when, in 1966, she cut her first album, Ragazzo triste, then came Piper with La bambola and she shot to fame. Since then, she’s sold more than 110 million records, performed all over the world and forged friendships with celebrities like Ezra Pound, Lucio Fontana, Mario Schifano, Mick Jagger and Jimi Hendrix. A memory of when it all began?

One episode that always makes me laugh is related to one of my many trips to London by car. Returning to Italy, I was with Alberto Marozzi and Gordon (her first husband, the English musician, editor’s note), and we stopped at an Autogrill because we ran out of gas, not to mention money, when I saw Alberto jumping up and down like a lunatic: he found Giovani between the magazines on sale, which showed me as number one on the charts and featured on the cover. Con Sanremo è stata tutta colpa mia. Fui io a chiedere a Melis di cosa si trattava e lui mi propose di andare. Partecipai insieme a Little Tony con La spada nel cuore e la prima sera abbiamo vinto su Celentano. Tony era entusiasta, io quasi non mi rendevo conto.

The singer celebrated 50 years of successes, embarking on a greatest hits tour, and performed at Sanremo Festival di, and I always had a good rapport with them because I had clear ideas, so it was easy to explain them. I think Levante and Ghali are great; I like their lyrics. Maybe I could reach out and speak to them, we’ll see… For now, of the many things I’m currently doing, I’m also preparing a new album that will be out in November. It will be a pretty unique album, like Radio Station, Nic – Unic and Biafra, which no one spoke about in Italy, but just a month ago, I discovered that Rolling Stone included me as one of the top 50 artists in the world that have experimented with their music and left their mark thanks to this album.

Tell us about Rome, when you would ride around in your 500 with Jimi Hendrix; what still exists of that Rome?

Unfortunately there’s nothing left of that Rome… Just think, I would walk around barefoot in those days and park in front of the Pantheon because that’s where I lived. I often spent entire nights writing songs next to the fountain in the piazza, then Andreotti would pass by in the morning on his way into the office and we would greet each other; it was our routine.

Your favourite places in the city?

I love to walk, which I try to dedicate at least an hour and a half to two hours every day to. I like my neighbourhood, the Quirinal Hill, I go to Monti, I talk with people, then there’s the Colosseum and the Forum. If I want to refresh a bit, I go to these places, even if now they’re unfortunately overrun with tourists.

Vasco Rossi described you as is feminine half.

Yes, and he’s my male half. A long time ago, he told me that he decided to perform and write songs after hearing me sing. He fills stadiums, which I do too, and I’m not that bad at it (she laughs).

bambola mi divertii moltissimo a creare l’abito insieme a Versace, mi immaginai questa sorta di tunica e questa acconciatura molto particolare. Gianni mi chiese di fargli uno schizzo e capì subito cosa intendevo.

C’è qualche artista con cui avrebbe voglia di collaborare?

Trovo molto bravi Levante e Ghali, mi piacciono i loro testi. Potrei magari recuperarli e parlarci, vediamo… Per ora, in mezzo alle tante cose che sto facendo, sto anche preparando un nuovo disco che non uscirà prima di novembre. Sarà un album molto particolare come Radio Station, Nic - Unic e Biafra, di cui nessuno ha parlato in Italia, mentre ho scoperto giusto un mese fa che Rolling Stones americana mi ha inserita tra i primi 50 artisti mondiali che hanno sperimentato e lasciato il segno proprio per questo disco.

Ci racconti la Roma di quando girava sulla sua Cinquecento insieme a Jimi Hendrix e cosa c’è ancora di quella Roma.

Di quella Roma purtroppo non c’è più niente… Pensa che allora camminavo a piedi scalzi, parcheggiavo davanti al Pantheon, perché abitavo lì. Spesso passavo notti intere a scrivere canzoni appoggiata alla fontana della piazza, al mattino passava Andreotti, che andava verso l’ufficio, e mi salutava, ormai era diventata una consuetudine.

I suoi luoghi del cuore in città?

Amo passeggiare, cerco di ritagliarmi anche un’ora e mezzo o due al giorno. Mi piace la mia zona del Quirinale, vado a Monti, chiacchiero con le persone, poi il Colosseo, i Fori. Se voglio rifarmi un po’ gli occhi vado da quelle parti, anche se purtroppo sono invase dai turisti.

Vasco Rossi l’ha definita la sua parte femminile.

Si, e lui è la mia parte maschile. Tempo fa mi ha raccontato anche che ha deciso di fare concerti e scrivere pezzi dopo avermi sentita cantare. Adesso lui riempie gli stadi, anch’io però non me la cavo male (ride).

L’anno scorso è uscita la sua autobiografia, La cambio io la vita che… Com’è stato ripercorrere la sua intera vita e metterla nero su bianco?

In realtà è stato un passatempo. Mi ero lussata una spalla, in barca, e ho pensato che fosse l’occasione per scrivere. Certo, emozionante a momenti, ma la vita è la vita, non sono portata per la nostalgia.

Che opera ha realizzato per l’evento Arte & Aids?

Mi sono ispirata a un fondale marino. Spero di essere riuscita a fare qualcosa di decente perché era una piccola tela, mentre io sono abituata a dipingere su tele grandi, come facevo quando invadevo lo studio di Mario Schifano, un fratello per me.

La sua storia e le sue aspirazioni

Enrico Oetiker is a 27-year-old Roman actor, handsome, tall, brownhaired, blue-eyed, who starred in the films Se Dio vuole and Classe Z and will soon be back on the big screen in In search of Fellini. Very athletic, he describes himself as an “incurable fan” of all sports played with a ball or a board, in addition to extreme water sports.

When did your acting career begin?

After high school, I studied Economics for one year only because I felt that I was missing something. I followed a friend’s advice and I auditioned for Corrado Pani’s drama school. Only twenty students were accepted and I got in. From then on, I started climbing up the ladder. What started for fun turned out to be my whole life.

What are your hobbies?

In addition to acting and sports, I am passionate about all things beautiful. I enjoy travelling and I’ve been fond of writing, reading and drawing since childhood. Let’s say that I was raised on bread and art.

What was your upbringing like?

Bipolar, by which I mean that my father is Swiss, that is, precise and punctual, and my mother is half Apulian and half Sicilian and, thus, very outgoing, loving, physical. These two ways of life coexist inside me all the time.

Your family owns a chocolate factory, Said, which is also a restaurant now. What was it like to grow up amid sweets?

Said was established in 1923, four generations have operated it so far, now it’s run by my mother and uncle. Growing up amid chocolate taught me self-control, because I love sweets. But it also gave me a deep culinary culture.

What are your three best and three worse qualities?

I have sense of humor, I’m an enthusiastic person and I have a talent for bringing people together. Three faults: I have no practical sense, I’m impatient and stubborn.

What is your favorite role to play?

I love drama films. I enjoy playing characters in conflict with themselves: drug addicts, sick people or deeply in pain. Which are also the most difficult and complex roles to play.

Sportivo doc, si definisce “amante inguaribile” di tutti gli sport che abbiano una palla o una tavola oltre agli sport acquatici estremi.

Quando hai iniziato a recitare?

Finito il liceo mi sono iscritto a economia. Dopo un anno ho lasciato perché sentivo che mi mancava qualcosa. Su consiglio di un amico ho fatto il provino per l’accademia di recitazione Corrado Pani. C’erano solo venti posti ma mi hanno preso. Da lì in poi è stata tutta una bellissima scalata. Da un gioco di evasione è diventata tutta la mia vita.

Quali sono i tuoi hobby?

Oltre alla recitazione e agli sport ho una grande passione per tutto ciò che è bello. Mi piace viaggiare e fin da bambino amo la scrittura, la lettura e il disegno. Diciamo che sono cresciuto a pane e arte.

Che tipo di educazione hai avuto?

Un’educazione bipolare, nel senso che mio padre è svizzero, quindi preciso, puntuale, schematico e mia madre è metà pugliese e metà siciliana quindi molto più espansiva, affettuosa, carnale. Questi due modi di vivere convivono in me costantemente.

La tua famiglia ha una fabbrica di cioccolato, Said, oggi anche ristorante, come è stato crescere in mezzo ai dolci?

Said c’è dal 1923, è la quarta generazione ed ora se ne occupano mia mamma e mio zio. Crescere tra la cioccolata mi ha insegnato molto l’autocontrollo, a me che sono un terribile goloso. Ma anche mi porto dentro una grande cultura gastronomica.

Tre qualità e tre difetti di Enrico?

Sono una persona autoironica, entusiasta e uno che tende a unire le persone. I tre difetti: sicuramente non ho senso pratico, sono impaziente e testardo.

Qual è il ruolo che preferisci interpretare?

Amo i film drammatici. Mi piacciono molto i personaggi problematici, quelli con grandi conflitti interni: drogati, malati, persone con un forte dolore. Che poi sono anche i ruoli più difficili e complessi.

One of the most popular faces on American and international television, Don Diamont, born in 1962, is the star of the most watched Daytime Drama in the world, Bold and Beautiful, where he plays the ruthless billionaire media tycoon Dollar Bill Spencer. He also starred as Brad Carlton on Young and Restless from 1985 to 2009.

Included by People magazine in the list of the fifty most handsome men in the world, Don Diamont’s bond with Rome is not only emotional, but also a union of ‘style’ that has seen him endorse the best Dan Roma fashion tailoring. Thanks to Dario Mandatori, known as Dan in the tailoring world, the art of Roman shirt-making goes beyond the boundaries to become a guarantee of artisan excellence throughout the world. We met the actor one afternoon in Rome.

Is this the first time you’ve been engaged to endorse a product?

And why did you choose an Italian product?

Over the course of my career, I’ve had many opportunities to endorse a brand’s identity, but this time it’s special for me. I have genuine affection for the family and truly admire their work. I had the chance to meet the entire Mandatori family, along with the legendary Dario, and it was love at first sight. One day I told Signor Dario that he was a true “OG”, an American term for “original gangster” style. Frank Sinatra is a good example. His products mean wonderful fabrics, attention to detail, refined craftsmanship and love.

Is there something that you appreciate about the Romans and that makes them unforgettable?

Energy, beauty, and food. There’s nothing about Rome that I, my wife and my family don’t love.

Rome is an open-air movie set... Have you also ridden a Vespa like Gregory Peck?

I didn’t spend any time on a Vespa, but my son Alexander and his friends rented scooters and had fun riding around the city.

Would you like to come back to Italy with some episodes of The Bold and the Beautiful?

I’m insisting on this a lot. It would be an incredible experience and I really hope it happens.

Nel corso della mia carriera ho avuto modo più volte di rappresentare l’identità di un brand, ma questa volta è speciale per me. Provo un affetto sincero per la famiglia e un’ammirazione vera per il loro lavoro. Ho avuto la possibilità di conoscere l’intera famiglia Mandatori, insieme al mitico Dario, ed è stato amore a prima vista. Ci fu un giorno in cui dissi al Signor Dario che era un vero “OG”, termine americano per indicare uno stile da “original gangster”, Frank Sinatra ne è un buon esempio. I suoi prodotti significano meravigliosi tessuti, attenzione ai dettagli, raffinata artigianalità e amore.

C’è qualcosa che apprezza dei romani e che li rende indimenticabili?

L’energia, la bellezza, il cibo. Non c’è niente di Roma che io, mia moglie e la mia famiglia non amiamo.

Roma è un set cinematografico a cielo aperto… anche Lei è salito su una Vespa come Gregory Peck?

Non ho passato del tempo in Vespa, ma mio figlio Alexander e i suoi amici hanno noleggiato gli scooter e si sono divertiti a fare il giro della città. Sarà sicuramente la prossima cosa che farò.

Le piacerebbe tornare in Italia con qualche puntata di Beautiful?

Sto insistendo molto a questo proposito. Sarebbe un’esperienza incredibile e spero davvero possa accadere.

A life lived to the fullest. And to the limits. A child of his time, controversial 1977. Andrea Pazienza, trent’anni senza (thirty years without him) is the tribute that the Ex Mattatoio in Rome, a place now destined for creatives of the comic strip, is dedicating to the rock star of Italian comics (running until July 15th). Thirty years after his sudden death on June 16, 1988, at the age of just 32, it is still hard to find a definition that incorporates all the aspects of his multi-faceted artistic vein. It was 1977 and Pazienza, studying at Bologna’s DAMS, dropped out only two exams away from his thesis, seemingly launched into an infinite Eden of creativity. But it was also the dark days of the student protest that would later end in armed struggle, barricades, occupied buildings, and municipalities. The year 1977 was, and will always be, the poor unwanted brother of 1968. It was the struggle of those who started out with weapons pointed and knowing that they could never build a new world, but could perhaps harm the old one. These were the years of Punk, of independent music labels. These were the years of anger and cynicism, disenchantment and nihilism, a mass outburst, a permanent revolution. And Paz was their icon. He was the forerunner of all the street artists, but also of the kids killed by the heroin that would reap victims, like a plague, for all of the next decade. He was the singer of the unsung Una vita al massimo. E al limite. Figlio del suo tempo, il controverso ‘77. Andrea Pazienza, trent’anni senza è il tributo che il Ex Mattatoio di Roma, luogo ormai destinato ai creativi delle strip, dedica alla rockstar del fumetto italiano (fino al 15 luglio). A trent’anni dalla sua improvvisa scomparsa, a soli 32 anni il 16 giugno del 1988, è ancora difficile trovare una definizione che possa inglobare tutte le sfaccettature della sua poliedrica vena artistica.

Era il ‘77 e Bologna con il suo DAMS, che Pazienza abbandonerà a soli due esami dalla tesi, sembrava proiettata in un infinito Eden di creatività. Ma erano anche i tempi pesanti della contestazione studentesca che poi sfocerà anche nella lotta armata, delle barricate, dei palazzi occupati, delle comuni. Il ‘77 era, e rimarrà sempre, il fratello povero e indesiderato del ‘68.

Era la lotta di chi partiva già con le armi spuntate e la consapevolezza che non avrebbe mai potuto costruire un mondo nuovo, casomai danneggiare il vecchio. Erano gli anni del Punk, delle etichette musicali indipendenti. Erano gli anni vissuti con rabbia e cinismo, con disincanto e nichilismo, uno sfogo di massa, una rivoluzione permanente.

E il Paz ne era l’emblema. Era l’antesignano di tutti gli street artist, ma anche dei ragazzi uccisi dall’eroina che mieterà vittime, come una pestilenza, per tutto il decennio successivo. Era il cantore degli eroi scanzonati di una stagione che sembrava non dover avere mai un domani.

heroes who seemed destined to have no tomorrow. With his caustic irony, he created everyday life stories, most of the time misadventures, of characters borrowed from the university environment, from his circle of friends. A varied world that recounted the social and historical reality of those years better than any academic study. And inevitably it became the pivot of those comics, spokesmen of the artistic avant-gardes and the movement. From Alter Alter (appendix of Linus) to Frigidaire, Il Male, and Tango. On exhibit are the storyboards of his famous Le straordinarie avventure di Penthotal (The extraordinary Adventures of Penthotal), a sort of dreamlike diary but with the tragic events of 1977 (when a student was killed). And his alter ego-antihero par excellence Zanardi, with very few ethics and morals all his own. And the storyboards of his graphic novel Pompeo. Hyper-productive Pazienza managed to combine teaching at the Free University of Alcatraz created by Dario Fo, with the creation of record covers, such as Robinson for Vecchioni and collaborations for the posters of Fellini’s films The City of Women and the cult of the early 1980s, Away from Where by Casini and Marciano. He also had a part in the screenplay of The Little Devil by Benigni who in fact remembers him as “The founder of a great school without pupils, because he is inimitable, a unique talent.”

Con la sua caustica ironia si dilungava sulle storie di vita quotidiana, disavventure il più delle volte, di personaggi che prendeva a prestito dall’ambiente universitario, dalla cerchia dei suoi amici. Indolenti, sempre sopra le righe, a loro modo sbruffoni: un variegato mondo che raccontava, meglio di qualunque dotto studio, la realtà sociale e storica di quegli anni.

E inevitabilmente divenne il perno di quelle riviste, portavoci delle avanguardie artistiche e del movimento. Da Alter Alter (appendice di Linus) a Frigidaire, Il Male, e ancora Tango. In mostra le tavole delle sue celebri Le straordinarie avventure di Penthotal, una sorta di diario onirico ma dai risvolti tragici del ‘77 (quando fu ucciso uno studente). E ancora il suo alter ego-antieroe per eccellenza Zanardi, di poca etica e una morale tutta sua. E ancora le tavole del suo romanzo grafico Pompeo. Iperproduttivo Pazienza riusciva a coniugare l’insegnamento nella Libera Università di Alcatraz creata da Dario Fo, con la creazione di copertine di dischi, come Robinson per Vecchioni e ancora le collaborazioni per i manifesti dei film di Fellini La città delle Donne e il cult dei primi anni ‘80 Lontano da dove di Casini e Marciano.

Sua è in parte anche la sceneggiatura de Il Piccolo Diavolo di Benigni che infatti lo ricorda come “Il capostipite di una grande scuola senza allievi prediletti perché inimitabile, un talento irripetibile”.

Esquilino is the highest and vastest of the seven hills Rome was founded on. The hill is comprised of three high plains: Oppius (Oppio hill) to the south, Fagutal (where San Pietro in Vincoli is located) to the west and Cispius in the north, where the current Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore can be found.

A hip and picturesque neighbourhood, it’s home to exceptional monuments and museums and some of the most elegant churches in the capital, including the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. This Papal Basilica, one of four in Rome and built by Pope Sixtus III in 432, was built atop an earlier church that was in turn built on the site of a miracle. It’s said that in 356, Pope Liberius I saw the Virgin Mary in a dream, who told him to build a church in the place where he would find snow. The following morning (August 5), snow fell on Esquilino and the pope hurried to build the church. To commemorate this event every year, on August 5, thousands of white petals are dropped from the ceiling of the basilica. The adjacent bell tower, built in a Romanesque-Renaissance style, measures 75 metres in height, making it one of the tallest in Rome. It was built by Gregory XI and boats 5 bells, one of which rings every evening at 9pm with its unmistakable sound, calling the faithful to prayer. The interior of the basilica is beautiful, vaunting a mosaic cycle from the 5th century depicting the lives of Christ – under the triumphal arch – Abraham, Isaac and Jacob to the left of the central nave and Moses and Joshua on the right. The mosaic pavement of the nave merits a close look, an example of the Cosmatesque style that reigned in the 13th century, as does the “Loggia delle Benedizioni,” with its stupendous mosaics from the 1400s and the helixshaped staircase designed by Bernini.

In the piazza in front of the church, the tall column, nearly 19 metres in height, comes from the Basilica of Massenzio in the Forum. Continuing down via Cavour toward the Termini train station, you’ll come to Palazzo Massimo alle Terme, one of the branches of the National Roman Museum.

Il Colle è formato da tre alture: l’Oppius, (colle Oppio) nel settore meridionale, il Fagutal (dove c’è san Pietro in Vincoli) in quello occidentale e il Cispius nella parte settentrionale, dove si trova attualmente la basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore.

Quartiere pop e pittoresco, ospita alcuni monumenti e musei d’eccezione e alcune tra le più raffinate chiese della Capitale, tra cui appunto la basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore.

Questa Basilica Papale, una delle quattro di Roma, edificata da Papa Sisto III nel 432, fu eretta su una chiesa precedentemente posta sul sito di un miracolo. Si dice, infatti, che nel 356 Papa Liberio I vide in sogno la Vergine Maria che gli disse di erigere una chiesa nel luogo dove avrebbe trovato la neve. Il mattino seguente (il 5 agosto) la neve cadde sull’Esquilino e il Papa si affrettò dunque a costruire la chiesa. Per ricordare questo avvenimento ogni anno, il 5 agosto piovono dal soffitto della Basilica migliaia di petali bianchi. Il campanile della Basilica, in stile romanico rinascimentale, si staglia per 75 metri ed è il più alto di Roma; è stato costruito da Gregorio XI e ospita alla sommità cinque campane, una delle quali si ripete ogni sera alle ventuno, con suono inconfondibile, come richiamo per tutti i fedeli. Bellissimo, all’interno della basilica è il ciclo di mosaici del V secolo sulla vita di Cristo che decora l’arco trionfale, e quelli sulla vita di Abramo, Isacco e Giacobbe a sinistra della navata centrale e di Mosè e Giosuè a destra. Meritano una vista attenta il pavimento in mosaico della navata - esempio di arte cosmatesca del XIII secolo - la loggia delle benedizioni con i suoi meravigliosi mosaici del XIII secolo e la scala elicoidale progettata dal Bernini.

Nella piazza davanti alla Chiesa, la colonna alta quasi 19 metri proviene dalla Basilica di Massenzio nel Foro. Continuando su via Cavour in direzione della stazione Termini si arriva a Palazzo Massimo alle Terme, una delle sedi del museo Nazionale Romano.

Costruito tra il 1883 e il 1887 in stile neorinascimentale, Palazzo Massimo alle Terme nacque come collegio dei padri gesuiti e conservò tale destinazione fino al 1960. Nel

Built between 1883 and 1887 in the Neo-Renaissance style, Palazzo Massimo alle Terme was founded as a college for Jesuit priests and was used as such until 1960. In 1981, it was purchased by the Italian State to become one of the branches of the museum. Inside, you’ll find one of the most important collections of ancient art in the world, making it among Rome’s must-see museums. On the ground floor and first floor, there are sculptures, busts and portraits from the Imperial era, Greek bronzes from the 2nd century and beautiful bronze sculptures that decorated the Nemi ships; the second floor boasts one of the most beautiful museum halls in the world because within, frescoes dating to 20 BCE from the Villa di Livia have been recreated. Here, the visitor is surrounded by an imaginary garden with blooming trees, pomegranates, quinces and birds that seem impossible to have been painted more than 2,000 years ago. On the basement floor, there’s a collection of coins, millennia-old gold objects and an impressive mummy of an 8-year-old girl.

Leaving the museum, you’ll find yourself in piazza dei Cinquecento, where there’s a monument of Pope John Paul II, a copper statue by Oliviero Rainaldi placed in front of the station in 2011 as a symbol of the concept of protection and hospitality, two principles Pope Wojtyla promoted.

A little further down, there’s piazza della Repubblica, also known as piazza Esedra because it follows the semi-circular exedra from the Baths of Diocletian. At the centre of the piazza, there’s the Fountain of the Naiads by Mario Rutelli, dating to 1900. When it was finished, it caused a scandal because of the nudity of the four naiads (water nymphs) that surround Glaucus that represent the different forms of water: river (a water snake), lake (a swan), stream (a lizard) and ocean (a seahorse).

The piazza is also home to the beautiful Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, designed by Michelangelo and the only Renaissance church in Rome.

The terrain where the basilica stands was once covered by the Baths of Diocletian, an 1981 fu acquisito dallo Stato italiano, per divenire una delle sedi del Museo Nazionale Romano. All’interno, c’è una delle più importanti collezioni di arte antica del mondo ed è uno dei musei di Roma assolutamente da non perdere. Al piano terra e al piano primo sono conservate sculture, busti e ritratti di epoca imperiale, dei bronzi greci del II secolo e delle bellissime sculture in bronzo che decoravano le navi di Nemi; al secondo piano c’è una delle sale museali più belle al mondo perché è stata ricreata una stanza con affreschi risalenti al 20 a.C., provenienti dalla Villa di Livia. Qui, il visitatore viene circondato da un giardino immaginario con alberi in fiore, melograni, mele cotogne e uccellini, che sembra impossibile possa essere stato affrescato oltre 2000 anni fa. Inoltre, al piano sotterraneo c’è una collezione di monete, oggetti d’oro millenari e un’impressionante mummia bambina di otto anni.

Uscendo dal Museo ci si trova in piazza dei Cinquecento dove c’è il monumento a Papa Giovanni Paolo II, una statua del 2011 realizzata in rame da Oliviero Rainaldi e collocata davanti alla stazione perché simboleggia il concetto di protezione e accoglienza che voleva Papa Wojtyla.

Poco oltre c’è piazza della Repubblica nota anche come piazza Esedra perché segue il perimetro dell’Esedra semicircolare delle Terme di Diocleziano. Al centro della piazza c’è la Fontana delle Naiadi, di Mario Rutelli, del 1900 che quando fu terminata si gridò allo scandalo per via della nudità delle quattro neiadi (ninfee acquatiche), che circondano Glauco e che simboleggiano le diverse forme dell’acqua: il fiume (un serpente d’acqua), il lago (un cigno), la corrente (una lucertola) e l’oceano (un cavalluccio marino).

Nella piazza anche la bellissima basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli, progettata da Michelangelo, è l’unica chiesa rinascimentale di Roma.

impressive construction that showed off the prominence of the Roman Empire, right up to when the Goths closed the city’s aqueducts, condemning the baths to ruin.

Inside, the size is impressive, especially the eight enormous, 14-metre-tall columns made from different coloured marble. The most interesting element of the church is the sundial on the floor that was traced by Francesco Bianchini in 1792, which indicates midday and the position of the north star, and still today is used as a calendar. The church has a monumental organ with 5,400 tubes, wowing visitors who have the good fortune of listening to its melodies. The Baths of Diocletian are behind the basilica, the largest in Ancient Rome, which are definitely worth a visit. The semi-circular parameter of the piazza, created

by Gaetano Koch at the end of the 19th century, was designed to retrace the grandiose exedra from the thermal baths. The construction of the baths, extending across 13 hectares, happened between 305 and 306 CE and were dedicated to Diocletian. The baths - also part of the National Roman Museum today - could contain up to 3,000 people and adhered to the usual layout of large Roman baths, with the calidarium, tepidarium and frigidarium situated along a central axis. The two cloisters, known as “Certosa” and “Michelangelo,” are beautiful. In the latter, there are more than 400 works of art, including statues, reliefs, altars and sarcophagi. Esquilino is home to many ethnic restaurants and stores, as well as the largest fruit, vegetable meat and fish market in the capital: the Nuovo Mercato Esquilino.

Here, alongside all the Italian products, there are exotic spices and foodstuffs coming from every part of the world; even Romans looking to do a bit of multi-ethnic grocery shopping can visit the ex-market di piazza Vittoria, today in via Turati, to find everything they need.

A place surely worth mentioning is the Mercato Centrale in via Giolitti, a sort of Spanish market where various Italian food products come together, attracting the attention of Romans and foreigners alike, and where you can sit down to a tasty plate at one of the many small tables available. no. Nella zona dell’Esquilino ci sono moltissimi ristoranti e negozi etnici e il più grande mercato di frutta, verdura, carne e pesce della Capitale: il nuovo mercato esquilino. Qui, accanto a tutti i prodotti italiani, ci sono spezie esotiche e generi alimentari provenienti da ogni parte del mondo e anche i romani desiderosi di fare una spesa multietnica visitano l’ex mercato di piazza Vittorio, oggi in via Turati, per trovare tutto l’occorrente. Un posto sicuramente degno di nota è anche il Mercato Centrale in via Giolitti, una sorta di mercato spagnolo dove varie eccellenze gastronomiche italiane convivono attirando l’attenzione di romani e stranieri e dove è possibile gustare un buon piatto accomodandosi a uno dei tanti tavolini presenti.

What rapport have you developed with the beauty of the palace and its art gallery?

Palazzo Doria Pamphilj is one of the few historic palaces in Rome open to the public, and conserves many priceless treasures. So when it comes to beauty and the palace, there’s nothing more to add. We humbly sought a dialogue with art, classical art, and the splendour of the setting.

What precept was at the base of your project for staging the Gala?

Being a charity dinner, the budget naturally had to be contained as much as possible in order to be able to give as much as possible to the cause. So it was thought that because the mission of this event is aimed at the younger generations, the most affected by the upsurge in the virus, why not involve a school? So I thought about the students at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome, which the school accepted, participating with great enthusiasm.

Palazzo Doria Pamphilj è uno dei pochi palazzi antichi di Roma aperti al pubblico dove sono stati raccolti tesori inestimabili. Dunque in quanto a bellezza al Palazzo non si poteva aggiungere nient’altro. Abbiamo umilmente cercato un dialogo con l’arte, l’arte classica e con lo sfarzo degli ambienti.

Quale principio è stato alla base del progetto per l’allestimento del Gala?

Essendo un evento benefico, naturalmente i budjet dovevano essere ridotti al minimo per lasciare il più del ricavato alla beneficenza. Allora mi è venuto in mente che, visto che la mission di questa manifestazione era destinata ai giovani, i più colpiti dalla recrudescenza del virus, perché non coinvolgere una scuola? Così ho pensato agli studenti dell’Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma. La scuola ha accettato e partecipato con grande entusiasmo.

Often too tired or overwhelmed by other worries, we’d prefer to think about where to go on vacation or what new thing to buy in some boutique. Fortunately, there are organizations that with hard work and effort, as well as optimism and energy, can bring forth activities that are essential for safeguarding not just ourselves but also those around us. Amongst these there’s undoubtedly Anlaids, the first Italian association created for fighting the spread of HIV and AIDS. We spoke with Massimo Ghenzer, president of Anlaids Lazio, which this year celebrates the 30th anniversary of its foundation, and which on June 14 returned to the stunning rooms of Palazzo Doria Pamphilj for its annual gala dinner, this year titled Arte & Aids. The benefit event was attended by important figures in the worlds of theatre and sports, like Alessandro Preziosi, Patty Pravo, Filippo Magnini, Paolo Sorrentino, Vladimir Luxuria, Ferzan Ozpetek, Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas and Nicoletta Romanoff, called upon to each create a painting that was then put on display in the Doria Pamphilj Gallery for a week.

What are the main objectives of Anlaids?

The objective that’s guided us for many years – I’ve been president for 15 years, half the existence of Anlaids Lazio – is correct information and prevention. For a while now, the media hasn’t dedicated the proper efforts and intensity to the subject of HIV, and information is scarce and outdated, making it difficult to understand the truth about the infection. We’re dedicated to information about prevention and assistance for those who believe they have the infection or those that genuinely do have it.

And what are the tools that you use?

We provide psychological assistance, not clinical, which is the job of hospitals: we offer suggestions about how to behave and who to turn to for treatments, and, very importantly, we conduct salivary tests that can give results in just a few minutes, while blood tests will take a few days, something that tends to cause a lot of anxiety.

Esistono temi davanti ai quali molti voltano la testa per guardare altrove. Spesso troppo stanchi o già pieni di preoccupazioni si preferisce pensare a dove andare in vacanze o a cosa comprarsi di nuovo in qualche boutique. Per fortuna però esistono realtà che con impegno, fatica, ma anche ottimismo e energia, portano avanti attività fondamentali per la salvaguardia di sé e del prossimo. Tra queste c’è senz’altro Anlaids, prima associazione italiana nata per la lotta contro la diffusione del virus Hiv e dell’Aids. Abbiamo parlato con Massimo Ghenzer, presidente di Anlaids Lazio, che quest’anno celebra i trent’anni dalla fondazione e che il 14 giugno è tornata nelle meravigliose sale di Palazzo Doria Pamphilj con la sua annuale cena di gala, quest’anno dal titolo Arte & Aids.

Quali sono gli scopi di Anlaids?

L’obiettivo che ci guida da tanti anni - io sono il presidente da 15 anni, quindi la metà della vita di Anlaids Lazio - è quello della giusta informazione e della prevenzione. Da tempo i mass media non si occupano più con il dovuto impegno e la dovuta intensità dell’argomento dell’Hiv, le informazioni sono poche e scadenti, non si riesce a far capire la verità assoluta sulla infezione. Noi quindi ci dedichiamo all’informazioni per la prevenzione e all’assistenza di colore che credono di avere l’infezione e che realmente hanno l’infezione.

E quali sono gli strumenti che adottate?

We do the tests at our offices in via Giolitti, in collaboration with the Ospedale Spallanzani, a highly-regarded centre for infectious diseases. We also work with managing parenthood: an adequately-supported couple with HIV or AIDS can procreate without the fetus being affected by the virus.

What’s the most difficult message to get across?

Many believe that HIV is curable and that there’s even a vaccine.

This isn’t the case, it’s fake news. A path to a vaccine hasn’t even been identified. There are increasingly sophisticated medications, but they tend to make the disease chronic, not cure it, and it greatly lowers the organism’s immune system. The truth is a hard thing to bear, but it’s important to be knowledgeable in order to act properly.

And what about information amongst the younger generations?

Progetto Scuole is the heart of our association. Every year, we meet with around 15,000 kids and we explain to them the right behaviours for not contracting the disease. At the end of the school year, with the idea of peer education, the kids participate in a competition between the various schools with a theatrical performance about what they’ve learned. I think the best way to learn is to teach, and when doing so, we can have a profound impact, providing important results.

Tell us about the annual event that you organize at Palazzo Doria Pamphilj.

It’s one of our fundraising initiatives, perhaps the most important.

The administrative costs are fairly contained: 70% of the takings go towards our projects, while the remaining 30% are dedicated to management. It’s all verifiable since we have a legal representative and the balance has a public value. Many important people, friends I’d call them, collaborated with Arte & Aids. There are also the people that I’ve worked side-by-side with for years, like Patrizia Ferri, who left behind her career as an exceptional criminal defense lawyer and for the past 15 years has dedicated her heart and soul to the association, Prince Jonathan Doria Pamphilj, our treasurer, who with his immensely large network provides an essential contribution, and professor Pasquale Narciso, the former head physician at the Ospedale Spallanzani, who in addition to being the Vice-President also provides professional expertise.

Per quanto riguarda l’informazione tra i più giovani?

Il Progetto Scuole è il cuore della nostra associazione. Ogni anno ci relazioniamo con circa quindicimila ragazzi e gli spieghiamo quali sono i comportamenti giusti per non contrarre l’infezione, poi, alla fine dell’anno scolastico, in base al principio della peer education, i ragazzi stessi partecipano a un concorso tra le varie scuole, con una rappresentazione teatrale che trasmette ciò che hanno appreso.

Ci racconti dell’evento annuale che organizzate a Palazzo Doria Pamphilj. È una delle iniziative, forse la più importante, che realizziamo per raccogliere fondi. Abbiamo una struttura molto leggera come costi amministrativi: il 70% degli introiti li dedichiamo ai nostri progetti, solo il restante 30% va alla gestione. Fabricio Bridge and, at the center, Cestio Bridge

One of the things that best describes Rome is the Tiber river, which flows through the whole city and represents the capital’s heart and soul. Walking along the river’s banks provides a lesser-seen and lesser-known view of Rome, far from the busy streets and crowds, and the chance to discover unique corners and sights. The Tiber’s cycle path is the best way to get a breathtaking view of Rome’s many bridges from below and a glimpse into the city’s history from a new perspective.

The first bridges were built with wood in order to destroy them to hold back invaders. The Romans began building stone bridges only when they grew confident of their supremacy at home and were sure that no enemy would attempt to use the bridges to gain access to the city. Many ancient Roman bridges no longer exist, while others were built in recent times to meet the modern needs of a contemporary city. Here is our list of the top ten bridges from the Tiber Island to northern Rome.

Fabricio Bridge Rome’s oldest bridge was supposed to be the Sublicio, which no longer exists and was probably located just downstream the Tiber Island.

The bridge that today leads from the Tiber Island to the Ghetto is the Fabricio Bridge, named after the man who had it built, Lucio Fabricio, in 62 B.C. The Fabricio Bridge features many inscriptions. The bridge’s flooring is made of travertine, while the foundations were built with tuff and bricks. The bridge is also known as the four-headed bridge because of a monument with four heads and one body set in a block of marble, which probably represents the four architects who restored the bridge in the days of the Popes’ reign and were punished with death because of their incessant arguing over the project.

Cestio Bridge The Cestio Brdige connects the other bank of the Tiber Island to the Trastevere area. It dates back to the ancient Roman days and was probably built by

I primi ponti furono costruiti in legno per poter essere distrutti in caso di attacco nemico e solo quando i Romani si sentirono sicuri del loro potere, iniziarono a costruire i ponti di pietra. Infatti, prima di quel momento, per ragioni difensive, non si era ritenuto conveniente costruire ponti che potevano essere utilizzati dal nemico per entrare in città. Oggi molti degli antichi ponti romani non esistono più, mentre altri sono stati creati per le moderne esigenze della città contemporanea. Abbiamo selezionato i dieci più belli partendo dall’Isola Tiberina per arrivare a Roma nord.

Ponte Fabricio Il ponte più antico di Roma sembra essere stato il Sublicio - oggi scomparso - che doveva trovarsi poco più a valle dell’Isola Tiberina. Quello invece oggi in uso tra l’Isola Tiberina e il Ghetto è il Ponte Fabricio, il cui nome si deve al costruttore, Lucio Fabricio, che lo fece realizzare nel 62 a.C. Il ponte Fabricio è caratterizzato da moltissime incisioni sul suo percorso. La pavimentazione del ponte è di travertino, mentre le fondamenta sono di tufo e di mattoni. In the heart of the Maremma, just a few kilometres from Castiglione della Pescaia, sits a gem of winemaking, the Fattoria Le Mortelle, property of theAntinori family boasting an extraordinary location for both the nature and the history of the places that surrounds it: 270 hectares, including 170 of vineyards that produce wines that are distinctly tied to this strong yet elegant territory, including Poggio alle Nane (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Carménère), characterized by an aromatic complexity and elegant tannins, Vivia (Vermentino, Viognier and Ansonica), a mineral white with a citrusy aftertaste, and Botrosecco (Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc), a captivating, decisive and highly-balanced drink.

A lake and an evocative natural oasis, Diaccia Botrona, are also part of the estate, populated by ducks, coots and many other varieties of birds. Le Mortelle is home to an avant-garde cellar: a cylindrical underground structure supported by radial columns that make for a true pool of light, with a ceiling covered in plants. To ensure low energy consumption, lamellar openings were designed to allow as much natural lighting as possible, as well as the use of the rock face’s exudation to humidify the cellar.

Designed to have as low an environmental impact as possible, its architectural appeal makes it one of the most visited wine cellars in Tuscany. Summer events are held all throughout the Le Mortelle estate. Here are a few: Excellence from the Earth, a tasting of wines paired with local dishes, served against a backdrop of live music and the evocative garden (Saturday, July 7 and 14); Dinner Under the Stars, two special evenings with a great Italian chef from the Jeunes Restaurateurs d’Europe (Friday, July 20, Saturday, July 21, Friday, August 10 and Saturday, August 11); Wine Tasting at Sunset, an aperitivo in the garden with live music (August 4); and the final event on August 31: Cooks in Harvest, an exclusive dinner served with the cellar’s wines and accompanied by live entertainment in celebration of the start of the 2018 harvest.

Le Mortelle possiede una cantina all’avanguardia: una struttura ipogea a forma cilindrica sostenuta da pilastri radiali che ne fa un vero e proprio pozzo di luce, con il tetto ricoperto di piante. In funzione del risparmio energetico sono state progettate le aperture lamellari che consentono un’illuminazione il più naturale possibile e l’utilizzo della trasudazione delle rocce per umidificare la barriccaia. Pensata fin dalle origine per ridurre al minimo l’impatto ambientale, il suo appeal architettonico la inserisce di diritto nel circuito delle cantine d’autore più visitate in Toscana. Per tutta l’estate Le Mortelle si anima di eventi estivi. Ve ne segnaliamo alcuni. You can’t say you know Rome without having first tasted Cacio e Pepe; it would be like visiting the capital and forgetting the Colosseum! A dish that bears all the elements of traditional Roman povera cuisine, it’s found in many varieties (spaghetti, tonnarelli and rigatoni) and is subject to many surprising interpretations.

As you’ll recall, Rome’s first restaurateurs came from families of shepherds from the mountains in Abruzzo in central Italy. During transhumance, the shepherds, being away for a long time, brought with them in their saddlebags high-calorie foods that kept for lengthy periods, like dry, hand-made pasta, pepper and aged sheep’s cheese, to make the distance from home less painful. This dish was later transformed in Roman restaurants from something modest into a typical and refined recipe of tradition. Legend says that innkeepers served it really dry so clients would have to accompany it with wine and they could earn more! The original recipe calls for just a few carefully-selected ingredients, like local aged sheep’s cheese (today a D.O.P. product), but its preparation was anything but simple. The secret to cacio e pepe, aside from the quality of the products, is in the chef’s ability to cook the ingredients until they’re sufficiently creamy without needing to use oil, butter and cream. The preparation method varies in every restaurant, but it’s mandatory to try it because, in addition to goodness, the dish conserves the working-class soul of the city and the simplicity of Romans.

Come ricorderete, i primi ristoratori di Roma provenivano da famiglie di pastori dei monti abruzzesi nel centro Italia.

Durante la transumanza i pastori, stando a lungo lontani, portavano con sé nella bisaccia cibo ad alto contenuto calorico che si conservasse a lungo, tra cui pasta secca fatta a mano, pepe e formaggio di pecora stagionato per rendere la lontananza da casa meno dolorosa. Questo primo è stato poi trasformato nei ristoranti romani da pasto frugale a piatto tipico e ricercato della tradizione. La Leggenda narra che gli osti la servissero molto secca, in modo che i clienti dovessero necessariamente accompagnarvi del vino ed aumentassero i loro guadagni! La ricetta originale richiede pochi ingredienti selezionati con cura, tra cui il pecorino romano stagionato (oggi D.O.P.), ciononostante la preparazione è tutt’altro che semplice. Il segreto della Cacio e pepe, infatti, a parte la qualità dei prodotti, sta nell’abilità del cuoco di mantecare gli ingredienti per rendere il condimento sufficientemente cremoso senza ricorrere a olio, burro e panna. Il metodo di preparazione varia in ogni trattoria, ma è d’obbligo assaggiarla, perché, oltre alla bontà, conserva l’anima popolana della città e la semplicità dei romani.
