Alexita+KiMa are a young DJ duo, athletes who used to play professional tennis together before deciding that music would be their future. Alessandra Di Cola and Chiara Mazzuca are their real names, while their stage name is a reference to Alessandra’s nickname and an acronym of Kima’s first and last name.

What is your background?

I’m an engineer in L’Aquila, and studied in Milan before moving to Rome, while Chiara has a degree in Law; her true passion has always been horses, though, and she’s a professional rider. We taught ourselves music, then we both took a DJ course with Good Music.

What is your relationship like?

We’re friends first and music partners second. We’re lucky enough to be able to travel together and share a lot of exciting moments. Fortunately, we can talk about everything with each other.

What does music represent for you both?

Music is a companion in so many situations. It’s an energetic and mental hobby. As a child, Chiara would walk around with her Logic case full of CDs, and always liked to listen to old soundtracks. For me, music is an escape from real life. Together, we’ve found a way to create different environments, lighting up the dance floor at company parties, events in luxury stores, and nightclubs.

What kind of music do you make?

We make electronica music mixed with slower desert music. We blend electronic and psychedelic sounds with Afro music. We love clubs where we can really get our adrenaline pumping.

Alexita+KiMa è solo un duo dj ma prima ancora due ragazze giovani, sportive e belle che dopo aver praticato insieme tennis a livello agonistico, hanno deciso che la musica sarebbe stata il loro futuro. Alessandra Di Cola e Chiara Mazzuca sono i loro veri nomi.

Che back ground avete?

Alessandra è un ingegnere dell’Aquila, ha studiato a Milano e si è poi trasferita a Roma mentre Chiara è laureata in legge ma la sua vera passione sono sempre stati i cavalli, praticando equitazione a livello agonistico. Siamo arrivate alla musica da autodidatte inizialmente e poi abiamo frequentato il corso da DJ di Good Music.

Che rapporto avete?

Prima di essere socie e partner, siamo amiche. Abbiamo la fortuna di viaggiare tanto insieme e di condividere tante belle emozioni. Fortunatamente possiamo parlare di tutto.

Cosa rappresenta la musica per voi?

La musica è una compagna di tante situazioni. E’ uno svago energetico e mentale. Da ragazzina Chiara usciva con il case logic pieno di CD e ricorda che le è sempre piaciuto mettere le colonne sonore dei momenti trascorsi, mentre per Alessandra la musica rappresenta l’evasione dalla realtà quotidiana. Insieme hanno trovato il modo di vestire tante situazioni diverse e di condurre la dance floor di feste aziendali, eventi in store di lusso e club a notte fonda.

Che tipo di musica fate?

Mettiamo una musica elettronica, mescolata a generi più lenti della desert music. Fondiamo mondi elettronici e psichedelici con la musica afro e la nostra passione sono i clubbing dove riusciamo veramente a provare una forte scarica di adrenalina.

What made you fall in love with this profession?

My imprinting with regard to the sartorial art goes back to when, as a child, I used to play with my grandfather’s fabric swatches; I would stack them and play with them, creating improbable constructions. I remember taking great pleasure, even then, in caressing different kinds of cloth, with various patterns.

What makes your garments so special?

Every garment is a story constructed on the client’s physicality. An important event, an occasion or simply a visiting card, a way of being. Every garment is a story, never coincidental.

What kind of man are they designed for?

A man who pays attention to detail, to the excellence of a fabric accompanied by a cut that time makes precious.

What distinguishes a true gentleman?

The memory that he leaves of himself.

The most original request you have ever received?

You don’t ask for extravagance from a tailor’s shop like mine. The real extravagance of a contemporary client is to be impeccably classic.

In the wardrobes of which well-known people do we find your creations?

Prestige is very subjective, I have dressed actors, brokers, designers, but my greatest satisfaction is to have as a client a Senegalese gentleman, of great elegance, very influential at the entrepreneurial level in France. In these cases, I realize that fame does not go hand in hand with prestige.

A special place in Rome?

Piazza di Pietra is my favorite, the right combination of history and art. A place full of energy and elegance.

Cosa l’ha fatta innamorare di questo mestiere?

Il mio imprinting con l’arte sartoriale è antico. Da bambino giocavo con le mazzette di mio nonno, le impilavo e ci giocavo a fare costruzioni improbabili. Già allora ricordo che provavo un gran piacere ad accarezzare tessuti di varia natura e fantasia.

Cosa rende i vostri abiti così speciali?

Ogni abito è una storia costruita sulla fisicità del cliente. Un evento importante, un’occasione della vita o semplicemente un biglietto da visita, un modo di essere.

Ogni abito è un racconto, mai casuale.

Per quale tipo di uomo sono pensati?

Uomini attenti al particolare, all’eccellenza di una stoffa accompagnata da un taglio che il tempo rende prezioso.

Un vero gentleman si distingue da?

Dal ricordo che sa lasciare di sé.

La richiesta più originale che vi è stata fatta?

Non si chiedono stravaganze ad una sartoria come la mia. La vera stravaganza di un cliente contemporaneo è essere impeccabilmente classico.

Nei guardaroba di quali personaggi troviamo i vostri abiti?

La notorietà è molto soggettiva, ho vestito attori, broker, stilisti, ma la più grande soddisfazione è quella di avere come cliente un uomo senegalese, di grande eleganza, molto influente a livello imprenditoriale in Francia. In questi casi mi rendo conto che la fama non va di pari passo con la notorietà.

Un luogo speciale per lei a Roma?

Piazza di Pietra è il mio preferito, un giusto connubio tra la storia e l’arte. Un luogo denso di energia e di eleganza.

How long have you been dealing in automobiles?

About 17 years. After university and a few years of working abroad I came back to develop the Bentley Dealership.

What fascinates you about your work?

Being able to follow the evolution of the automotive industry as an insider. I should actually say the automotive revolution!

So let’s consider this revolution. Which novelty most appeals to you?

The kind of car you own no longer represents a specific trend. Its use and ownership options have become the real trend. We’re talking about eco-friendly and safety features, speed limits on our roads, choosing between buying and leasing, etc.. This is what’s really exciting.

What’s new and what are the new projects for the end of the year?

I have closed the dealership contracts with Volvo and Jaguar Land Rover, and there will be more good news (I hope!) next year.

Which car has struck you the most?

The Velar…it’s out of this world.

The best car to drive around Rome and where could we go.

The electric Jaguar I-Pace. It doesn’t pollute and you can drive through the limited-traffic zones.

And what about one to go out for a special dinner?

If the restaurant is meant to be a surprise, I’d say a Discovery. You can go anywhere with that one.

Which place in Rome would you suggest a visitor not miss?

I would recommend having dinner on one of the magnificent terraces in the city’s historic center to appreciate the magnificent views and to visit the Vatican Museums.

Da quanto tempo lavora nel mondo delle auto?

Da circa 17 anni. Dopo l’università e qualche anno di esperienza di lavoro all’estero sono rientrata per sviluppare la Dealership Bentley.

Cosa la affascina del suo lavoro?

Potere seguire dall’interno l’evoluzione del settore Automotive. Anzi direi la rivoluzione!

Considerata la ‘rivoluzione’ del settore Automotive, qual è la novità che le piace di più?

L’auto di per sé non è più l’unico trend, ma anche l’utilizzo e la modalità di acquisto dell’auto stessa è diventato il trend vero e proprio (non inquinare, la sicurezza, i limiti delle nostre strade, acquisto o noleggio, ecc…). Questo mi piace molto.

Quali sono le novità e i progetti per la fine di quest’anno?

Ho portato a compimento gli accordi di distribuzione con Volvo e Jaguar Land Rover e altre novità seguiranno (speriamo!) l’anno prossimo.

Qual è l’auto che le è rimasta nel cuore?

La Velar… è una bomba.

A spasso per Roma: dove e con che auto?

Con la Jaguar elettrica (I PACE): non inquina e entra nella ZTL. E per una cena speciale?

Se il ristorante è a ‘sorpresa’ meglio un Discovery… così arriviamo ovunque!

Un consiglio ad un visitatore a Roma: un posto da non perdere.

Consiglierei di cenare in una delle bellissime terrazze del centro storico di Roma, per apprezzare una vista unica, e visitare i Musei Vaticani.

Francesca Rossi Petrini is a jeweler with a strong passion for stones and an impressive insight into trends, using his imagination to bring important family jewels to life and experimenting with precious stones, colors, and enamels. He’s known by everyone as Paquita. His shop, Petrini, can be found at viale Parioli, 164.

When did you begin making jewelry?

I’ve had a passion for jewelry since I was in high school. I graduated from IGI (International Gemological Institute Italy), after which I moved to Santa Monica, in the US, to study colored gems for six months. I then took a two-year course at IED. I began my career as an intern for a gem wholesaler in Rome, who taught me all the techniques of the workshop.

What was your strength?

I saw that there weren’t any any fun, ready-to-wear jewelry pieces, so I decided to create them. I’ve always tried to reinterpret family jewelry in a modern way, playing with the stones and colors. I’ve always asked my clients to use precious abandoned objects and to infuse them with a new life, a new history.

What was the first piece of jewelry?

A wedding ring with a heart, in the ‘90s. Everyone copied that.

I gave it my style, putting an idea out there that everyone liked and popularized. I was ahead of the trend.

And how did you become so renowned?

Word of mouth. When I began in 1990, we didn’t have cell phones, Instagram, or Facebook, nor were there any testimonials that could promote me.

What is your favourite piece?

For me, the piece you wear depends on the mood of the day.

During the day, I like to play with earrings, while in the evening, rings are very important.

Francesca Rossi Petrini è una gioielliera con una forte passione per le pietre e una grande intuizione delle tendenze, che ha usato tutta la sua fantasia per far rivivere gioielli di famiglia importanti, sempre giocando con pietre preziose, colori e smalti. E’ conosciuta da tutti come Paquita. La sua gioielleria -Petrini- è in viale Parioli 164.

Quando ha iniziato a fare gioielli?

Ho sempre avuto la passione per i gioielli, da quando facevo il liceo. Ho preso il diploma all’IGI (Istituto Gemmologico italiano), poi sono stata in America a Santa Monica a studiare per sei mesi le pietre di colore e, infine, ho fatto un corso di due anni sui gioielli allo IED. Ho iniziato a lavorare da un grossista di gioielli che mi ha insegnato tutte le tecniche di laboratorio.

Qual’è stato il suo punto di forza?

Ho visto che mancava un prêt-à-porter divertente del gioiello ed ho pensato di crearlo. Il mio intento è sempre stato quello di reinterpretare i gioielli di famiglia in chiave più moderna, giocando con le pietre e con i colori. Ho sempre forzato le mie clienti ad usare oggetti prezioso abbandonati per ridare un corso a una storia.

Qual’è stato il primo gioiello con cui si è fatta conoscere?

La fede con il cuore, negli anni Novanta. Poi l’hanno copiato tutti. Ho imposto un mio stile, lanciando idee che sono piaciute ed hanno fatto moda, anticipando tendenze.

Come si è fatta conoscere?

Col passaparola. Quando ho iniziato io, nel 1990, non c’erano i telefonini, Instagram, Facebook e non c’erano testimonial che ti facevano pubblicità.

Qual è il suo gioiello preferito?

Per me il gioiello dipende dal mood della giornata. E’ qualcosa che vive insieme a te e che cambia a seconda dell’interpretazione che gli dai. Di giorno mi piace giocare con gli orecchini e la sera con anelli molto importanti.

Martin Scorsese has special ties to the city of Rome and to Italian films, a passion since his youth, when he used to go down to New York’s Little Italy after school to watch the great masterpieces of Roberto Rossellini, Vittorio De Sica, Michelangelo Antonioni and Federico Fellini. Those afternoons inspired the love of film that led him to become a director and produce such masterpieces as Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and Goodfellas. His Italian blood (his grandparents emigrated from Sicily in the early twentieth century) may also have helped, of course! Scorsese observed the Italian film scene with curiosity from the States, fascinated by the “Hollywood on the Tiber” (as Rome was nicknamed between 1950 and ’65) which inspired Fellini’s La dolce vita. In 2000 the Italo-American director paid homage to Cinecittà by filming his blockbuster Gangs of New York with Leonardo DiCaprio. Scorsese has always had a special relationship with Italy’s capital city: he first came to Rome in 1970, the year he met Rossellini. More recently, in 2006, he and the actor known for Titanic opened the first Festa del Cinema in Rome with a preview of The Departed, while in 2018 Scorsese received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Paolo Taviani at the festival. At this year’s Festa di Roma, he presented The Irishman (available on Netflix), starring his good friend Robert De Niro: a gangster movie that shares the melancholy of Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in America. Further evidence of Scorsese’s ties with Italian film!

When did you realise your life was going to revolve around film?

When I started watching the films of Pasolini, Rossellini, Antonioni, De Sica and Fellini, at the cinema and on TV. In two or three years, everything changed for me. The first time I saw Accattone, it came as a real shock: I identified with those characters.

They were so real! And what to say of Fellini? He’s just sublime.

Antonioni’s L’avventura was a piece of modern art that I had to learn to understand, while Visconti’s Il gattopardo combined melodrama with a political message. But I got the sense of humour behind Goodfellas from Pietro Germi’s Divorzio all’italiana.

In The Irishman, you go back to the gangster movie, and above all, you go back to working with De Niro, almost 25 years down the road. How did this project start?

After Casinò (1995), De Niro and I were looking for a story and

Con la capitale Scorsese ha sempre avuto un rapporto stretto: la sua prima volta a Roma fu nel 1970, anno in cui incontrò Rossellini. Più recentemente (nel 2006), insieme all’attore di Titanic, tenne a battesimo la prima edizione della Festa del Cinema con l’anteprima di The Departed, mentre nel 2018 ricevette da Paolo Taviani il premio alla carriera. Quest’anno, sempre alla Festa di Roma, ha presentato The Irishman (disponibile su Netflix) interpretato dall’amico Robert De Niro: un gangster movie che condivide una vena malinconica con C’era una volta in America di Sergio Leone. A riprova che il cinema italiano è insito in Scorsese.

Quando si è reso conto che la sua vita avrebbe battuto la strada del cinema?

Quando ho iniziato a vedere i film di Pasolini, Rossellini, Antonioni, De Sica e Fellini al cinema e in tv. In due o tre anni è cambiato tutto. La prima volta che vidi Accattone fu uno choc: mi identificavo con quei personaggi così veri. Di Fellini che dire? È sublime. L’avventura di Antonioni era un pezzo di arte moderna che ho dovuto imparare a decodificare, mentre Il gattopardo di Visconti intreccia melodramma e impegno politico. L’umorismo in Quei bravi ragazzi però l’ho veicolato da Divorzio all’italiana di Pietro Germi.

a character worth telling. It was Bob who suggested I read Charles Brandt’s book I Heard You Paint Houses: Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran and Closing the Case on Jimmy Hoffa, narrated by Frank Sheeran (De Niro, ed.), a mafia hitman. The book, like the film, is about organised crime and corruption in the US, from the post-war years to the nineties, when the bosses infiltrated the trade unions, the government and business.

Bob was convinced and thrilled by this affair that dug right into the heart of America, and above all into the heart of the narrator.

It’s a film about more than organised crime.

It’s a story about life, love, death, remorse and betrayal. Who killed who? It’s a question that goes unanswered, that becomes unimportant in view of Frank’s solitude and his life flowing on toward death.

The Irishman takes us into the past to find out about the life of a trade unionist known in America as Hoffa (Al Pacino), but it is also rooted in the present.

Of course: moral conflict is timeless. The story is told in the past tense, but the narrator’s emotions, thoughts, decisions and immorality are relevant to people today.

In this film, gangsters are not the heroes, as they often are in film.

I didn’t want to create Scarface-type characters. I set aside the dramatisation of crime. We saw the spectacle as being an internal one.

What was it like to be back on the set with De Niro?

I hardly ever talked to Bob; we bared our souls and allowed ourselves to be led by Frank’s character.

This was your first time with Al Pacino, on the other hand.

Yes, but I met him in the ’70s thanks to Coppola. In the ’80s we were supposed to work together on a project about Modigliani, but it was never completed. It was Bob who had the idea of calling him. They had known each other for more than 40 years, and you could tell, on the set: when they were acting, something really special happened.

Was it complicated to make a film three and a half hours long that was more like something out of the past than one of today’s gangster movies?

We could never have done it without Netflix’s help. All the cinemas want these days is funfairs, films made from comic books and stuff like that. You can make any kind of movie, but you shouldn’t allow young people to believe that’s what film is all about.

Qui, come nel film, si parla di criminalità organizzata e della corruzione negli Usa, dal dopoguerra agli anni Novanta, quando i boss si infiltravano nei sindacati, nei governi e nelle imprese. Bob era convinto ed emozionato da questa vicenda che scavava nel cuore dell’America, nel cuore del narratore. È un film che va oltre il racconto della criminalità.

Racconta un percorso di vita, parla di amore, morte, rimorso e tradimento. Chi ha ammazzato chi? È una domanda che rimane sospesa, che passa in secondo piano di fronte alla solitudine di Frank e alla sua vita che scorre verso la morte.

Con The Irishman ci conduce nel passato a conoscere la vicenda di un sindacalista noto in America come Hoffa (Al Pacino), ma ci vuole ancorare anche al presente.

Certamente: i conflitti morali non hanno tempo. Questa storia è narrata nel passato, ma le emozioni, i pensieri, le decisioni e l’immoralità del protagonista si confrontano con la coscienza dell’uomo di oggi.

Qui i gangster non sono degli eroi, come capita di vedere al cinema.

Non volevo creare dei personaggi alla Scarface, ho accantonato la spettacolarizzazione della criminalità. Per noi lo spettacolo era solo interiore.

Come è stato ritrovare sul set l’amico De Niro?

Con Bob non ci siamo quasi parlati, ci siamo messi a nudo e fatti guidare dal personaggio di Frank.

Con Al Pacino invece era una prima volta.

Sì, ma lo avevo conosciuto negli anni ’70 grazie a Coppola. Negli anni ’80 dovevamo lavorare insieme a un progetto su Modigliani, ma non è andato termine. L’idea di chiamarlo è stata di Bob. Tra loro c’è un rapporto che dura da 40 anni e si sentiva sul set: quando recitavano accadeva qualcosa di speciale. È stato complicato portare a termine un film di 3 ore e mezza che si avvicina più a un cinema dle passato che ai gangster movie di oggi?

Senza l’aiuto di Netflix non sarei mai riuscito a realizzarlo. Oggi le sale vogliono solo parchi di divertimento, film tratti dai fumetti o similia. Va bene girare qualsiasi tipo di prodotto, ma non va bene far credere ai giovani che quello sia il cinema.

Rome, where are you? You were with me. Today you’re a prison, I’m a prisoner. Rome, ancient city, now old reality, you don’t notice me and you don’t know how much I pity you.

This is Vacanze Romane, the beautiful dedication to Rome that Matia Bazar sung during the 1983 Sanremo Music Festival. The lyrics were inspired by the end of the dolce vita, with an eye towards the future and today more current than ever. After all, singers and songwriters are nothing more than modern-day poets. Adriano Celentano, Vasco Rossi, Renato Zero, Zucchero, Rino Gaetano, Elio e le Storie tese, Mia Martini, and Mahmood are just a few of the most innovative artists in the history of the Italian music festival. This year, Amadeus has been called upon to pay tribute to an especially important edition, the 70th. The festival is like a party among family, bringing together Italians, reflecting who we are and predicting who we’ll become.

What are some childhood memories of the festival?

My memory is tied to my family, my parents and grandparents.

We were all at home watching the television. No one made any plans, and everyone would say, “Hey! The festival is tonight!”

This still happens today. Everyone has come together to watch it for the last 69 years. Everyone talks about it, thinks about the songs, interesting facts, gossip. This is why I’ve always said that the festival is belongs to everyone.

From Radio Verona to Radio DJ and Sanremo, you’ve had a good career as a TV presenter. When did you know you wanted to do this job?

Immediately. When I was a kid, about 13 or 14 years old, my dream was to be a presenter, watching Mike Bongiorno and his quizzes, Rischiatutto, or Canzonissima presented by Corrado and Carrà. At the time - we’re talking about the ‘70s - it was like an impossible dream, but it was the only thing that I really wanted to do. I didn’t have a plan B; it was this or nothing. It was risky; it was a long shot for a kid fresh from the countryside, without contacts, without an important parent to follow in the footsteps of. But I thought that in life, if you have a dream and you want to make it come true, then you can; all it takes is insisting, trying, being curious, and making sacrifices. You can dream for 100% success, and though you maybe won’t get all 100%, you

Un testo ispirato alla fine della dolce vita, con una visione sul futuro, ancora oggi attualissimo. Dopotutto, gli autori e gli interpreti di una canzone non sono che moderni poeti del nostro tempo. Da Adriano Celentano a Vasco Rossi, da Renato Zero a Zucchero, da Rino Gaetano a Elio e le Storie tese, da Mia Martini a Mahmood, sono solo alcuni dei più innovativi artisti della storia del Festival della canzone italiana. Quest’anno, Amadeus è chiamato a rendere omaggio ad un’edizione particolarmente importante, la 70^, in onda dal 4 all’8 febbraio 2020 su Rai Uno. Il Festival è la grande festa di famiglia che riunisce tutti gli italiani, dove ci si racconta come siamo e come saremo.

I suoi ricordi d’infanzia legati al Festival?

Il mio ricordo è legato alla famiglia, ai genitori, ai nonni. Si stava tutti a casa a guardare la televisione, non si prendevano impegni e si diceva “oh, stasera c’è il festival!” Questo accade ancora oggi.

Da 69 anni tutti si riuniscono per guardarlo, tutti ne parlano, tutti si occupano di canzoni, di curiosità, di gossip. E’ per questo che io dico sempre che il festival è di tutti.

Da Radio Verona e Radio DJ fino a Sanremo, un vero traguardo per un conduttore televisivo: quando ha capito di voler fare questo mestiere?

Subito. Da ragazzino, a 13 14 anni, il mio sogno era di fare il presentatore. Anche quando vedevo i quiz di Mike Bongiorno, Rischiatutto o Canzonissima presentata da Corrado e la Carrà.

All’epoca, stiamo parlando degli anni ’70, era quasi un sogno impossibile, però era l’unica cosa che davvero volessi fare, non avevo un piano B o facevo il presentatore o facevo il presentatore. E’ stato un rischio, non era scontato per un ragazzo che arrivava dalla provincia, senza conoscenze, senza un genitore importante. Ma io penso che nella vita se uno ha un sogno e vuole realizzarlo le cose si possono fare, basta insistere, provare, essere curiosi e sacrificarsi. Magari se si sogna 100 non si realizza 100 ma forse 50. Ecco, nel mio caso, ho sognato 100 e, facendo

Amadeus during Sanremo Giovani 2019 can perhaps get 50%. In my case, I dreamed for 100%, and with doing Sanremo, I can say I’ve reached that goal.

As a presenter, how would you describe your festival?

I believe that the festival has to have its dose of tradition because there are some doctrines that you simply must maintain, but after that, I think that every presenter brings their personal style of storytelling. I will bring my friendly, ironic, and self-deprecating style to the festival. I love to destabilize things, so it’s ok that there are some doctrines to follow, but at the same time, I like that nothing is expected. I’ve always said that it must be an unpredictable festival. I don’t like repetitiveness.

Fiorello and Jovanotti will be like brothers participating in this big party amongst family.

That’s right. I don’t know what they’ll do; they haven’t told me.

I’ve known Lorenzo and Fiorello for 35 years. They’re two amazing artists and their unpredictability is what I like most about them. We all started together in the ‘80s as radio DJs, and the door to Sanremo was wide open for them. What they’ll do, what will happen, I’m not sure. I know that they’ve been in contact and that they will surprise me with something. But when you have two artists like that, you don’t even ask what they’ll do.

Radio and music are written in your DNA as an artist. What is your favorite song from the festival?

There isn’t really one in particular, but I like a lot of them, and I remember a lot of them fondly. The beautiful thing about Sanremo is that there are songs that have accompanied us along the way and which are tied to our history, our life, our journey.

As artistic director, what “editorial” line do you follow in choosing the songs?

I start with emotions. We’re receiving many pieces, more than

Come conduttore, come potrebbe definire il suo Festival?

Credo che il Festival debba avere la sua dose di tradizione perché ci sono alcune liturgie che ci devono essere, ma poi credo che ogni conduttore porti il suo personale modo di raccontare. I Festival di Pippo Baudo sono stati diversi da quelli di Fazio o di Bonolis o di Claudio Baglioni. Io porterò il mio modo di condurre amichevole, ironico e autoironico. Amo destrutturare le cose, quindi va bene che ci siano delle liturgie ma, allo stesso tempo, mi piace che nulla sia scontato. Dico sempre che deve essere un Festival imprevedibile, non amo molto la ripetitività delle cose.

Fiorello e Jovanotti saranno come i fratelli che prendono parte a questa grande festa di famiglia.

Esattamente. Davvero non so cosa faranno, non me l’hanno detto. Conosco Lorenzo e Fiorello da 35 anni, sono due grandissimi artisti e la loro imprevedibilità è la cosa che mi piace di più.

Noi siamo partiti insieme negli anni ‘80 tutti da radio DJ e, quindi, la porta di Sanremo è spalancata per loro. Cosa faranno, che succederà ancora non lo so. So che si sentono tra di loro e che hanno intenzione anche di farmi una sorpresa. Ma quando hai due artisti così non gli chiedi neanche che cosa faranno. Qualsiasi cosa va bene, mi fido.

La radio e la musica sono impresse nel suo DNA di artista: qual è la sua canzone del cuore del Festival?

Non ce n’è proprio una in particolare ma tante che mi piacciono e tante che ricordo con affetto. D’altronde il bello di Sanremo è che ci sono canzoni che ci hanno accompagnato e sono legate alla nostra storia, alla nostra vita, al nostro percorso.

Come direttore artistico, qual è la linea seguita nella selezione delle canzoni?

Entrance of Teatro Ariston in Saremo where “Festival della canzone italiana (Italian song festival)” is held by 1977 100, and choosing just 20 songs will be difficult. Unfortunately, a lot of them will not be included, which is a shame. They are songs that I’m listening to every day as I look for an emotion and think about a possible recording. They have to be songs that have a radio following. I want to Sanremo to be pop, something that is for everyone, so I prefer to go for this rather than something niche or personal.

Hospitality in the city of Sanremo?

Sanremo is a party. Rai is building an impressive structure for the city of Sanremo for the 70th edition of the festival. There will be an outside stage with a red carpet that will be connected to the Ariston Theater. The whole city and its residents will be involved, with events and evening performances outside the festival. The city will be completely involved, which is new. Never in its 69 years has the festival extended beyond the Ariston. This temple of music will still be at the center of the party, but there will also be an outside temple with beautiful things happening all around Sanremo.

Speaking of Vacanze Romane, what are your favorite places in Rome?

I spend a lot of time in Rome for work, especially the Rai area, and it’s an open-air museum like few other places in the world.

Unfortunately, it’s been a bit abandoned in recent years. I say this with sadness because it’s a heritage to preserve, and I say that as a non-Roman because it truly is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Speaking of beauty, will Bellucci be there?

Who knows! Maybe! When people ask me about attendees, I always say, “Perhaps!” We’ll see. This is also part of the surprise and unpredictability that I hope to offer.

Parto dalle emozioni. I pezzi che stanno arrivando sono tantissimi abbiamo superato le 100 canzoni e la scelta di soli 20 brani sarà difficilissima. Purtroppo, tante non saranno incluse e questo è un dispiacere. Sono canzoni che io sto ascoltando tutti i giorni cercano l’emozione ma anche pensando ad un possibile percorso discografico. Devono essere canzoni che abbiano un seguìto nelle radio. Io voglio fare un Sanremo pop, che sia per tutti, popolare, quindi preferisco fare una scelta discografica piuttosto che di nicchia o personale.

L’accoglienza della città di Sanremo.

Sanremo è in festa. La Rai sta mettendo in piedi una struttura notevole che riguarda anche la città di Sanremo, per i 70 anni del Festival. Ci sarà un palco esterno con un red carpet che lo collegherà al teatro Artiston. Sarà coinvolta l’intera città, la gente, con manifestazioni ed eventi e ogni sera un artista si esibirà anche fuori. La città sarà completamente coinvolta e questa è una delle novità. Mai, in 69 anni, il Festival è uscito dall’Ariston. Il tempio ci sarà ma ci sarà anche un tempio esterno con cose molto belle che accadranno per l’intera città di Sanremo.

A proposito di Vacanze romane quali sono i luoghi amati della città di Roma?

Roma, che frequento molto per ragioni di lavoro, soprattutto l’area Rai, è un museo a cielo aperto come pochissime città al mondo. Purtroppo, è vero che negli anni è stata un pò abbandonata, lo dico con dispiacere perché è un patrimonio da preservare e, lo dico da non romano, perché è una delle città più belle al mondo.

A proposito di bellezza, ci sarà la Bellucci?

E chi lo sa... magari! Quando mi fanno dei nomi io dico sempre magari! Vedremo, anche questo fa parte della sorpresa e dell’imprevedibilità che spero di regalarvi.

You spend your life touring, acting, singing and dancing.

How do you do it?

It’s always been my dream.

Musical is the perfect choice for me. It’s still a bit looked down on in Italy, whereas abroad it is considered to be a complete form of art, which allows me to bring my three passions together. As a mother of a three-year-old child, it is not easy, but motherhood allows me to realize what is unnecessary and what, instead, is worth investing time in.

What artist do you admire?

Although I never met her, I’ve always been inspired by my maternal grandmother, after whom I was named. I read her diaries and some articles

about her. She was a brilliant actress and I think of her as my guardian angel.

Your singing repertoire ranges from opera music to jazz, from Argentinian tango to swing. But what do you sing when you’re preparing breakfast?

At this time of my life, I enjoy singing children’s songs. Baby Shark and the signature tune

by Pj Masks are among my “audience’s” favorites.

Your most beloved role?

Marilyn Monroe, whom I played in Love is blonde by Cristina Pezzoli, a revolutionary director who introduced me to a new way of acting.

What does dancing mean to you?

Dancing is an expression of the soul. When I want to express something I act, when words are not enough I sing, and when even singing is not enough, I dance.

Please tell us something about Ellington.

For many years, my partner Alessandro Casella and I performed in Broadway-like, forties-style musicals and so we finally decided to start our own club. It is a place where people can have dinner, drink cocktails and listen to good music. It is located in the Pigneto area, which is the new Via Veneto, where you can meet some truly amazing celebrities. Like the night Bill Murray, Wes Anderson and Edward Norton came.

Fin da bambina Vera Dragone ha respirato aria di spettacolo. Suo nonno era Vittorio De Seta, maestro del documentario neorealista, sposato con Vera Gherarducci, attrice di teatro che lavorò anche con Eduardo De Filippo, suo zio, Ivo Garrani, anche lui attore, così come il figlio. Una sorta di tradizione di famiglia.

Nata e cresciuta a Catanzaro si è poi trasferita a Roma per studiare recitazione. Anche quest’anno è al fianco di Lillo nel musical School of Rock, nel ruolo di Rosalie Mullins, che le è valso il premio Persefone 2019. Nel 2020 la vedremo in due fiction Rai: Alberto di Luca Manfredi e Vite in fuga di Luca Ribuoli.

Una vita in tournée la sua, tra recitazione, canto e danza. Come ci riesce? È il mio sogno da sempre. Il musical in questo è perfetto. In Italia è ancora un po’ snobbato, mentre all’estero è riconosciuto come la forma d’arte estremamente completa quale è, che mi permette di unire tutte e tre le mie passioni. A livello pratico, con un bambino di 3 anni, non è semplice, allo stesso tempo, però, la maternità ti aiuta a capire cosa è superfluo e su cosa invece vale la pena investire del tempo.

Un artista che ammira?

Una grande ispirazione, anche se non l’ho mai conosciuta, è mia nonna materna, di cui porto il nome. Ho letto i

suoi diari e alcuni articoli che parlavano di lei. Era una bravissima attrice ed è un po’ il mio angelo custode.

Nel canto va dalla lirica al jazz, passando per il tango argentino e lo swing. Ma cosa canta Vera mentre prepara la colazione la mattina?

In questo momento della mia vita mi diletto in compilation di canzoni per bambini. Baby Shark e la sigla dei Pj Masks sono le più richieste dal mio ‘pubblico’.

Il ruolo che più ha amato?

Quello di Marylin Monroe, che ho interpretato in Love is blonde, di Cristina Pezzoli, una regista rivoluzionaria, con cui ho sperimentato un nuovo modo di recitare.

Cos’è per lei la danza?

La danza è un’espressione dell’anima. Quando voglio esprimere qualcosa recito, quando le parole non bastano più, canto e quando anche cantare non basta più, danzo.

Ci racconti del suo Ellington.

Io e il mio compagno, Alessandro Casella, da molti anni facciamo spettacoli di varietà stile musical di Broadway anni ’40 e finalmente ci siamo decisi ad aprire il nostro locale. È un luogo dove cenare, bere cocktail e rilassarsi ascoltando buona musica. La zona è il Pigneto, che ormai è la nuova via Veneto, dove si incontrato personaggi incredibili. This is the motto Federico Fellini, one of the greatest film directors of all time, lived and worked by his whole life. January 20 marks the 100th anniversary of Fellini’s birth, and such a significant anniversary cannot go unmarked. Rome, the Maestro’s city of adoption, the city he described over and over again in his films challenging cinema’s aesthetic cannons, will celebrate in grand style.

His was a unique vision, mixing visionary and hyperrealist elements together, even grotesque and tragicomic now and then.

Among Fellini’s first films, The White Sheik starring Alberto Sordi, and I Vitelloni, considered to be one of his masterpieces. International success, however, came with La strada, shot in 1954 and which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1957, Fellini’s first Oscar-winning movie. In 1960, La dolce vita was awarded at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Nastro d’argento and David di Donatello prizes. And, just to mention a few more of Fel-

Soprattutto a Roma, città di adozione del Maestro, che più e più volte l’ha raccontata nei suoi film, rivoluzionando i canoni estetici del cinema.Uno sguardo unico, il suo, tra l’onirico e l’iper realista, a tratti grottesco e tragicomico.

Un linguaggio inedito, al punto che per lui fu coniato il termine “realismo magico”, poi sintetizzato in una sola parola: “felliniano”. Tra le prime pellicole, Lo sceicco bianco, con Alberto Sordi, e I vitelloni, per molti uno dei suoi capolavori. Il grande successo internazionale arrivò però con La strada, girato nel 1954 e per il quale, nel ’57 volò ad Hollywood a ritirare il suo primo Oscar, quello come miglior film straniero. BORN IN RIMINI, IN 1920, ROME WAS HIS CITY OF ADOPTION NATO A RIMINI NEL 1920, ROMA È STATA LA SUA CITTÀ D’ADOZIONE lini’s films, Nights of Cabiria, 8½, Amarcord, which all won the Academy Award, Roma, a semi-autobiographical film in which Fellini played himself, and finally The Voice of the Moon, starring Benigni and Villaggio, Fellini’s so-called “spiritual testament”.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth, follow us on a tour of Federico Fellini’s most memorable locations in Rome, both professional and private. Let’s start from the most iconic scene of La dolce vita, the one in which Anita Ekberg, who plays the beautiful Sylvia, wades into the waters of the Trevi Fountain, inviting Marcello Rubini- Marcello Mastroianni to join her. Other famous locations in the film are Via Veneto, where all the socialites and celebrities of the time used to gather; Piazza del Popolo, where the air was filled with the scent of decadence of the class of intellectuals, artists, filmmakers, aristocrats and bourgeois; whereas for the scene in which Marcello and Sylvia dance and get to know one another, the Baths of Caracalla were recreated in a studio.

Instead, in the Nights of Cabiria, the real Baths are the place where the sweet and naïve streetwalker Cabiria- played by Giulietta Masina, Fellini’s wife - and her “colleagues” wait for their clients, in contrast to the glamorous atmosphere surrounding Via Veneto’s prostitutes.

In occasione del centenario ripercorriamo i luoghi più significati a Roma legati a Federico Fellini, come uomo e regista. Perché Fellini non ha fatto cinema, Fellini è il cinema.

Partiamo dalla scena iconica de La dolce vita, quella che vede Anita Ekberg, nel ruolo della bella Sylvia, che entra nella Fontana di Trevi, invitando Marcello Mastroianni, alias Marcello Rubini, a seguirla. Altri affreschi rappresentativi di questa pellicola sono poi quello di via Veneto, la strada simbolo del film, dove in quel periodo si riunivano tutti i personaggi della mondanità; piazza del Popolo, dove si respirava la decadenza del ceto formato da intellettuali, artisti, cinematografari, aristocratici e borghesi; mentre è un’imitazione delle Terme di Caracalla, il locale dove i Sylvia e Marcello ballano, cominciando a conoscersi. Ne Le notti di Cabiria, le vere Terme sono invece il luogo dove l’ingenua e dolce prostituta Cabiria - interpretata da Giulietta Masina, moglie di Fellini - e le sue ‘colleghe’ restano in attesa dei clienti, in contrasto con l’atmosfera smagliante che circonda le escort d’alto bordo di via Veneto.

La scena forse più celebre di Roma, in cui tra busti e pezzi di colonne romane svetta la prostituta divenuta l’emblema del film, si svolge nel Mausoleo di Cecilia Metella, che ricom-

AMONG THE EVENTS TO CELEBRATE THE ANNIVERSARY, THE TRAVELLING EXHIBITION FELLINI 100 GENIO IMMORTALE, AT ROME’S PALAZZO VENEZIA IN APRIL 2020 Roma’s most famous scene, the one in which a prostitute rises amidst busts and pieces of columns, takes place in the Tomb of Caecilia Metella, which can be seen also in the long shot on the motorway leading into Rome, whose chaotic traffic ends at the Colosseum, visible again in the final sequence of the film, with a procession of motorcyclists speeding past the city’s principal monuments from Castel Sant’Angelo. Roma’s filming locations include Piazza di Spagna, where a group of hippies scatters across the Spanish Steps; the Termini train station, where the adventure of the young Fellini begins; Foro Italico and the Trastevere neighborhood. Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere is the background of the scene in Woody Allen’s To Rome with love based on The White Sheik. The two young newlyweds in Fellini’s film - Oscar (Leopoldo Trieste) and Wanda (Brunella Bovo) - arrive in Rome and stay at Albergo Tre Fiori, on Via Sistina, which was actually Hotel Ginevra on Via della Vite. However, the film’s most significant shooting location is Via 24 Maggio, where Wanda is supposed to secretly meet with the soap opera photo strip star she is obsessed with, the Sheik (Alberto Sordi). The film’s final sequence takes place in Piazza San Pietro, where Oscar and Wanda reconcile.

In piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere anche la scena omaggiata da Woody Allen in To Rome with love de Lo sceicco bianco. Nella storia i due sposini protagonisti del film, Oscar (Leopoldo Trieste) e Wanda (Brunella Bovo), appena arrivati a Roma vanno nell’Albergo Tre Fiori, in via Sistina, il cui interno fu girato in realtà nell’Hotel Ginevra di via della Vite. Il luogo però forse più importante è via 24 Maggio, dove si trova lo studio in cui Wanda dovrebbe incontrare, di nascosto dal marito, l’eroe dei fotoromanzi che tanto l’appassionano, lo sceicco del titolo (Alberto Sordi). Il film termina poi in piazza San Pietro teatro della riconciliazione di Oscar e Wanda, dopo il tentativo di quest’ultima di togliersi la vita gettandosi in un magro Tevere all’altezza di Castel Sant’Angelo. Non in molti lo sanno, perché accade in uno dei suoi lavori meno conosciuti, ma anche l’Eur, quartiere

Now let’s leave Fellini’s filming locations to visit the places of his life. First of all, speaking of cinema, the Cinecittà studios where, by going on the Cinecittà si Mostra tour, visitors can see the legendary Teatro 5, Fellini’s favorite set, and the famous Venusia head, a sculpture created for Fellini’s Casanova, as well as a room entirely dedicated to Fellini, including filmed sequences, original costumes, sketches and photos.

In Rome, Fellini lived in an apartment on Via Margutta, a fact acknowledged by a plaque on the building’s façade. His studio was on Corso Italia and his three favorite restaurants were: Cesarina on Via Piemonte, where Fellini held the launching of La dolce vita as payback for the many free meals he had enjoyed as a young man; Al 59, on Via Brunetti 59 serving also Emilian cuisine, including Tortellini del Maestro, paired with a glass of whiskey as Fellini used to do; and Dal Toscano on Via Germanico, bestknown for its barbecued meat.

Our final stop is at Bar Canova on Piazza del Popolo, the film director’s favorite café in Rome. Inside, there is a wall dedicated to Fellini, covered with his sketches, drawings and photos.

Primo, continuando a parlare di cinema, naturalmente è Cinecittà, che, grazie all’itinerario di Cinecittà si Mostra, permette di conoscere la figura del Maestro, passando a fianco del leggendario Teatro 5, suo set prediletto, e della famosa testa della Venusia, scultura creata per Il Casanova di Federico Fellini, ma anche attraverso una sala interamente dedicata a Fellini, con filmati inediti, costumi originali, disegni e foto. C’è poi la sua casa, in via Margutta 110, con la targa che ricorda lui e la moglie; il suo studio in Corso Italia e i suoi tre ristoranti preferiti in centro: la Cesarina di via Piemonte, dove Fellini, per ricambiare l’ospitalità e i tanti pasti offerti quando ancora era un ragazzo, organizzò il lancio de La dolce vita; Al 59, che la stessa Cesarina aprì poi in via Brunetti 59, portando anche lì la cucina emiliana, comprese variazioni sul tema come i Tortellini del Maestro, serviti con un bicchierino di whisky, come amava fare Fellini e Dal Toscano di via Germanico, in Prati, rinomato soprattutto per la carne alla brace.

Infine, il Bar Canova in piazza del Popolo, di cui il regista era un habitué e dove si può ammirare una parete di foto e disegni dedicata proprio a Fellini.

ALDA FENDI’S DECLARATION OF LOVE TO ROME WITH THE ESPERIMENTI FOUNDATION CON LA FONDAZIONE ESPERIMENTI ALDA FENDI DICHIARA A ROMA IL SUO AMORE text Antonia Ruggiero

Investing in beauty is a dream that Alda Fendi has fulfilled in her beloved Rome through the Esperimenti Foundation. The name is emblematic of the Foundation’s mission: experimentation with and contamination between painting, photography, cinema and theatre, because all forms of art are intertwined and connected.

“Experimentation is at the core of the Foundation’s activities - explains Alda Fendi -. The first experiment, in 2001, was the recovery of the apse and colonnade of the Basilica Ulpia in the Forum of Trajan. A very important archeological experiment, which required three years of works that brought back to light a wonderful colored-marble 400-square-meter flooring, from yellow to green.

In 2005, we began experimenting with theatre: eleven years of multimedia theatre, avant-garde theatre, which I would describe as the theatre of the future, consisting only in music and images, without words, which led to the production of eleven shows held at the Imperial Fora.”

The latest experiment, based on an idea by Raffaele Curi, the Foundation’s versatile artistic director, revolves around the literary and artistic surrealist movement. An exhibition showing until December 14 and devoted to photographer Man Ray and famous Spanish film director Luis Bunuel.

“Raffaele Curi and I are very much attuned to each other, we draw inspiration from the past to look at the contemporary world. We appreciate surrealism’s freedom: as much as it may be troubled, an artist’s life must be lived freely, selfconsciously.”

Like an art-house cinema, the Foundation has several movie theatres where one can watch the uncut version of five films by Buñuel, including Un chien andalou, whose script, speaking of contamination, was written by Salvador Dalì.

In the famous eye scene, considered to be surrealism’s manifesto, Buñuel invited viewers to open their eyes and change their way of looking at reality. A vision not too different from that of Alda Fendi, who was recently decorated with the Legion of Honour and is determined to make art more democratically available.

Investire sulla bellezza è un sogno da inseguire che Alda Fendi ha pienamente realizzato, nella sua amata Roma, con la Fondazione Esperimenti.

Il nome è emblematico: esperimenti ma anche le contaminazioni tra pittura, fotografia, cinema, teatro sono al centro della ricerca della fondazione, perché le diverse forme d’arte sono intessute di relazioni e legami.

“L’anima della Fondazione sono gli esperimenti - ci spiega Alda Fendi -. Il primo, nel 2001, è stato il ritrovamento dell’abside e del colonnato della Basilica Ulpia, al Foro Traiano. Un esperimento di archeologia molto importante cui abbiamo dedicato tre anni di lavoro che hanno riportato alla luce 400 mq di pavimentazione di meravigliosi marmi colorati, dal giallo antico, al verde africano.

Poi, nel 2005, sono iniziati gli esperimenti teatrali: undici anni di teatro multimediale che è un teatro d’avanguardia, che definirei il teatro del futuro, fatto solo di musica e immagini, senza parole, che ha dato vita ad un grande allestimento di undici spettacoli nei Fori imperiali.”

L’ultimo esperimento, da un’idea di Raffaele Curi, eclettico Direttore artistico della Fondazione, riguarda il movimento letterario e artistico del surrealismo. Un allestimento presente fino al 14 dicembre dedicato al fotografo Man Ray ed al celebre regista spagnolo Luis Bunuel.

“Con Raffaele Curi siamo in grande sintonia, ci ispiriamo al passato per pensare al contemporaneo. Del surrealismo ci piaceva la libertà: un artista deve vivere una vita anche tormentata ma completamente propria, libera, in piena coscienza di sé.”

Come in un cinema d’essai, nelle diverse sale della Fondazione è possibile assistere alla proiezione integrale di cinque film di Buñuel, tra i quali Un chien andalou che, a proposito di contaminazioni, ha come autore della sceneggiatura Salvador Dalì.

Nella famosa scena dell’occhio, considerata manifesto del surrealismo, Buñuel invitava lo spettatore ad aprire gli occhi, cambiare modo di guardare la realtà. Un invito non molto diverso da quello di Alda Fendi, recentemente insignita della Legion d’Onore e decisa a rendere l’arte fruibile in modo democratico.

Since 2001, all the events and exhibitions held at the Foundation have been admission-free. The Foundation’s philosophy is that art belongs to people, all people, and it is an instrument of cultural growth.”

Art cannot be explained through reasoning, it is an instinctive feeling. “No didactic reasoning, no apathetic tricks”, Lacan said.

And Breton, the founder of surrealism, was greatly influenced by psychoanalysis and by Freud’s The Interpretation of Dreams.

“To me, art is a dream that begins with the Basilica Ulpia and continues with the Arch of Janus which I asked photography director Vittorio Storaro to illuminate. And speaking of cinema, the Foundation’s symbol is a rhino, a work inspired by Federico Fellini’s film And the Ship Sails On, made by Buzzanca, the same artist who created it for the film, who was recently awarded the Compasso d’oro prize.”

The Foundation is housed in Palazzo Velabro, a building designed by the great French architect Jean Nouvel.

“In 2014, we decided we needed a head office and we entrusted the design of the building on Via dei Cerchi to Jean Nouvel, although it took us three years because of typical Italian bureaucratic delays. Jean Nouvel’s design of the building has set the Foundation in the international spotlight. He himself said that he considers this building to be one of his most important works so far, because any architect in the world dreams of creating, at least once in a lifetime, a work in Rome which, though so ill-treated, is still seen as the world’s most important city.”

As a matter of fact, by walking through the different rooms of Palazzo Rhinoceros, we reached the terrace that afforded the view of a beautiful glaringly bright Roman sky: the exhibition’s grand finale, the last work of art one’s eyes rest on. Even though it is not technically the last work of art. From December 14, 2019 to March 10, 2020, the Rhinoceros Gallery will be housing the painting by El Greco Saint Peter and Saint Paul.

“The exhibition is the second event resulting from the threeyear collaboration between Fondazione Alda Fendi – Esperimenti and the State Hermitage Museum of Saint Petersburg.

This collaboration is designed to strengthen the cultural relations between Italy and Russia through the showcasing of masterworks on loan from the famous Russian museum. The Foundation has chosen to make the admission free, in the symbolic and tangible effort to promote culture as heritage of the whole community.”

L’arte non si può spiegare con ragionamenti, è un sentimento istintivo. “Niente raziocinio didascalico, nè artifici qualunquistici” diceva Lacan. D’altronde Breton, ideatore del surrealismo, fu influenzato proprio dalla psicanalisi e dalla lettura de L’interpretazione dei sogni di Freud.

“Per me l’arte è un sogno cominciato con la Basilica Ulpia, e proseguito fino all’Arco di Giano che ho fatto illuminare dal direttore della fotografia Vittorio Storaro. E, a proposito di cinema, simbolo della Fondazione è un rinoceronte, opera ispirata al film di Federico Fellini E la nave va, realizzata infatti da Buzzanca lo stesso artista che lo ideò per il film, tra l’altro, recentemente premiata con il Compasso d’oro.”

Sede delle proposte e delle sperimentazioni artistiche e culturali della Fondazione è il Palazzo Velabro, progettato dal grande architetto francese Jean Nouvel.

“Nel 2014, è nata l’idea di avere una sede, così abbiamo affidato il progetto del palazzo in via dei Cerchi a Jean Nouvel, anche se abbiamo impiegato tre anni a causa della lunghissima burocrazia italiana. La realizzazione ad opera di Jean Nouvel ha dato un interesse internazionale alla Fondazione. Lui stesso ha dichiarato che considera questo lavoro uno dei più importanti che ha fatto, poiché tutti gli architetti del mondo vorrebbero, almeno una volta nella vita, poter realizzare un’opera a Roma che, così tanto trattata male, è considerata pur sempre la città più importante del mondo.”

In effetti, attraversando i diversi spazi del Palazzo Rhinocerons, si giunge, infine, alla terrazza che spalanca alla vista una bellissima serata in cui Roma mette in scena uno spettacolo fatto di luce e di cielo: un’immagine che resta negli occhi come l’ultima opera d’arte a cui assistere. Anche se non è affatto l’ultima.

Fino al 10 marzo 2020 sarà esposta presso gli spazi di Rhinoceros gallery l’opera di El Greco Santi Pietro e Paolo.

“L’esposizione segna il secondo appuntamento di un accordo di collaborazione triennale tra la Fondazione Alda Fendi - Esperimenti e il Museo Statale Ermitage di San Pietroburgo.

Questo prestigioso accordo nasce dal desiderio di incrementare i rapporti culturali tra l’Italia e la Russia, tramite l’esposizione di capolavori provenienti dal celebre museo russo.”

Few are those who have had as much influence over the fashion industry as he still does, after forty-four years, since the launching of the first Giorgio Armani collection in 1975. Needless to say, success came with his suits and jackets, the signature pieces of the Armani universe (the jacket worn by Richard Gere in American Gigolo blew open the gates of Hollywood for him), and by realizing that in those years women were anxious to work their

designs. Why “Emporio”?

Because the word evoked a sense of gathering together, a concept of democratic fashion, a place where you could find clothing and accessories, tips and ideas to dress from head to toe on a more reasonable budget, and it was far ahead of its time. The first Emporio Armani collections included a lot of denim and no fashion designer had ever even thought of using such a working-class fabric before.

All’epoca le collezioni proponevano molto denim e nessuno stilista di quei tempi aveva mai pensato a usare un tessuto così proletario. Un aquilotto come simbolo, che “nasce per caso disegnato al telefono su un foglio bianco.”

Presto le sue sfilate saranno le più attese. La lungimiranza, le intuizioni, quella capacità di cogliere un sentimento, un’impressione fra mille che si affollano nel quotidiano, non ha sosta.

Precocissima, rispetto al diffondersi delle seconde linee delle grandi maison, nel 1981 nasce Emporio Armani.

The communication strategy was quite senstational as well. Huge billboards, as never seen before, became an integral feature of Milan’s landscape in those years, it was 1984. Like graffiti, they covered the wall of Via Broletto. They were bigsized because designed to reach out to a wider urban audience, to people living in a city where everything happens and everything changes quickly. In 1989, the first Emporio Armani Magazine was published. It was a glossy six-monthly magazine, in a large print format, full of pictures and texts, a precursor to today’s very popular experimental publications. The magazine’s international scope and its representation of the global concept of the Emporio Armani lifestyle made it unique of its kind and even a collector’s item.

Today, the shop at 140 Via del Babuino in Rome showcases the 2020 S/S collection, amidst warm and bright interiors. The collection features a sporty look, with soft silhouettes, looser-fitting pants, unstructured jackets in very ductile fabrics. #Emporium is the fashion house’s latest project: small objects from sports to stationary, from travelling to high-tech, including everyday accessories and pet supplies. #Emporium embodies Emporio Armani’s dynamic spirit, but in brighter, more energizing colors. The line is based on the collaboration with well-known top-quality brands: Momo Design for helmets, Bic for pens, Polaroid for cameras, Wilson for golf and basket balls, and everthing under the wing of Emporio Armani’s eagle.

Le forme hanno un richiamo al mondo dello sport e le silhouette sono morbide, i pantaloni più larghi, le giacche destrutturate usano tessuti molto duttili. #Emporium, è l’ultimo progetto nato: piccoli oggetti che vanno dallo sport alla cancelleria, dal travel al tech, fino agli accessori di uso quotidiano e a quelli dedicati agli animali domestici. #Emporium racchiude lo spirito più dinamico di Emporio Armani, ma è animata da colori forti di pura energia.

It is the set design laboratory of the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, next to Via dei Cerchi. It is here, in the former Pantanella pasta factory, in front of the Circus Maximus (right next to the Mouth of Truth), that from the 1930s on, the scenery of one of the most prestigious theaters in the world has been created, a perfect synthesis of craftsmanship, technique and art. And it was here that we met Michele Della Cioppa, director of scenic construction. I started out as an assistant set designer,” said Della Cioppa, “for many years, alongside Mauro Carosi. Then I started working as a set designer and my career led me, in 1996, to the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, managing scenic construction, of which I became director in 2015. I’ve been working here for 23 years now.” The construction workshop he directs is headed by Luigi Marani, with whom Marcello Francucci collaborates, while for what is more properly referred to as set design, the memory of Maurizio Varamo is still vivid; his successor is Danilo Mancini, assisted by Silvia Tarchioni, Francesca Scala and Alessandro Nico.

“The director of scenic construction in a theatre takes care of the production of all the visual components of the show: set design, costumes and lights, explained the director. It is a matter of coordinating, organizing and providing for the realization of the representation starting from the relationship with the set designers of the individual shows hosted in the theatre.

The scenographer has the task of conceiving the scene in his mind, then he turns to us to make real and tangible what he has imagined: we make imagination possible. Moreover, in an opera the scenes are often not single, but multiple. And this makes the work of those who create them even more difficult, also because you have to take into account the most delicate moment: the scene changes. “For The Bassarids by Hans Werner Henze [staged in November 2015, directed by Mario Martone], for example, the scene was transformed through various “visible” passages during the one act - recalled Della Cioppa - a mirror backdrop that tilted or parts that collapsed simulating the ground caving in. Staged in this way, they are very complicated to realize, because everything happens before the eyes of the public and in time with the music. But it is not easy even when there is a change of scenery at every act, with the curtain closed, as for Tosca: you have to study all the expedients for optimizing the timing, because you have to change everything, but you have to do it fast.”

È il laboratorio delle scenografie del Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, accanto a via dei Cerchi. È qui, nell’ex pastificio Pantanella, di fronte al Circo Massimo (proprio accanto alla Bocca della Verità), che dagli anni ‘30 nascono le scenografie di uno dei teatri più prestigiosi al mondo, sintesi perfetta di artigianato, tecnica e arte. Ed è qui che abbiamo incontrato Michele Della Cioppa, direttore degli allestimenti scenici.

“Ho iniziato come assistente scenografo - racconta Della Cioppa -, per tanti anni al fianco di Mauro Carosi. Poi ho cominciato a lavorare come scenografo e il mio percorso mi ha portato, nel ‘96, al Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, nella direzione degli allestimenti scenici, di cui sono diventato direttore nel 2015.

Sono 23 anni che lavoro qui.” Il laboratorio di costruzioni che guida ha a capo Luigi Marani, con cui collabora Marcello Francucci, mentre per la parte scenografica più propriamente detta è vivo il ricordo di Maurizio Varamo, il cui successore è Danilo Mancini, affiancato da Silvia Tarchioni, Francesca Scala e Alessandro Nico.

“La direzione degli allestimenti scenici in un teatro si occupa della produzione di tutte le componenti visive dello spettacolo: scenografia, costumi e luci - spiega il direttore -. Si tratta di coordinare, organizzare e provvedere alla realizzazione degli allestimenti partendo dal rapporto con i creatori dei singoli spettacoli ospitati in teatro. Lo scenografo ha il compito di concepire la scena, poi si rivolge a noi per rendere reale e tangibile quello che ha immaginato: noi rendiamo la fantasia possibile.” In un’opera inoltre le scene spesso non sono singole ma molteplici.

E questo rende il lavoro di chi le realizza ancora più difficile.

Anche perché bisogna tenere conto del momento più delicato: i cambi di scena. “Per The Bassarids di Hans Werner Henze (in scena nel novembre 2015, con la regia di Mario Martone ndr), ad esempio, la scena si trasformava tramite vari passaggi ‘a vista’ durante l’atto unico - ricorda Della Cioppa -: un fondale a specchio che si inclinava o delle parti che sprofondavano simulando crolli del suolo. Messe in scena così sono molto complicate da realizzare, perché tutto avviene sotto gli occhi del pubblico e a tempo di musica. Ma non è semplice nemmeno quando c’è un cambio di scena a ogni atto, a sipario chiuso, come per la Tosca: bisogna studiare tutti gli espedienti per ottimizzare i tempi, perché va modificato tutto ma rapidamente.”

“Each man finds solutions to ever new problems”, explains Della Cioppa has been approved in a continuous dialogue with the director and scenographer, the “operational” phase is moved on to the laboratories. We don’t do a standardized job, and that’s exactly what’s great about it: finding solutions to ever new problems.”

“Today’s sets are for the most part based on the interpretation of the scenographer or the director and therefore more closely related to each individual staging than in the past, when they were more based on realism – he revealed. So it is very difficult to reuse the same elements for different shows. Before, there were standard settings, such as a forest, which could be used several times. Not now. What is reused most often are the basic structures, such as the skeleton of a tower, and the props, that is, the furniture and objects. “Sometimes it is enough to change the color of an object or the upholstery of a piece of furniture to make it fit in with the climate of the scene.” When we met Della Cioppa, the laboratories were busy with the realization of the sets designed by Richard Peduzzi for Les Vepres Siciliennes and Denis Krief’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi. And the most important challenge of the season is the Turandot of Ai Weiwei, the famous Chinese artist and dissident, who for the first time will try his hand at theatre direction. Big visual surprises are expected, but the scenery is top secret.

Non facciamo un lavoro standardizzato: questa è sì una fabbrica di spettacolo, ma molto particolare, perché ogni volta realizziamo una cosa diversa. Ed è proprio questo il bello: trovare soluzioni a problemi sempre nuovi.”

Un lavoro molto creativo dunque quello di chi realizza le scenografie. Anche perché ogni volta si riparte da capo. “Le scenografie di oggi sono basate molto sull’interpretazione dello scenografo o regista e perciò più legate alla singola messa in scena rispetto al passato, quando erano più improntate al realismo - rivela il Direttore -. Perciò è molto difficile riutilizzare gli stessi elementi per spettacoli diversi.” Ciò che viene riutilizzato più spesso sono invece le strutture di base, come ad esempio lo scheletro di una costruzione, e l’attrezzeria, cioè gli elementi d’arredamento e gli oggetti. “A volte basta cambiare il colore di un oggetto o la tappezzeria di un mobile per farlo aderire al clima della scena.”

Quando incontriamo Della Cioppa i laboratori sono impegnati nella realizzazione delle scenografie di Richard Peduzzi per Les Vepres Siciliennes e Capuleti e Montecchi di Denis Krief. Una delle sfide più importanti della stagione è la Turandot di Ai Weiwei, il noto artista e dissidente cinese, che per la prima volta si cimenta nella regia teatrale. Si preannunciano grandi sorprese a livello visivo, ma l’allestimento è top secret.

VISIONARY, BUT NOT TO EXCESS THE GREAT ARTISTS FEATURING IN THE FIRST EXHIBITIONS OF 2020 GLI ARTISTI PROTAGONISTI DELLE MOSTRE DEL PRIMO SPICCHIO DEL 2020 text Rossella Battista

The artists featuring in this winter are linked by the common threads of innovation and experimentation. This is easy to acknowledge in the case of Bacon and Freud at Chiostro del Bramante (until 23 February), and impressive when seen in a passionate collector and Caravaggio follower like Geo Poletti (1926-2012) whose collection of portraits is on show at Galleria Corsini (until 2 February).

But when it comes to Impressionism, it seems almost impossible to surprise us. However, an exhibition that presents some fifty artists with works from private collections is rare, if not unique. To celebrate the inauguration of what was once the home of Napoleon’s mother, Maria Letizia Ramolino, Palazzo Bonaparte, has opted for an emblem of France: Impressionismo segreto (until 8 March). Works by Cézanne, Pissarro, Sisley, Signac, Gauguin, Renoir and Monet, most of which have never been displayed in public. And don’t be deceived by the semi-undressed girl at the mirror on the poster: the intimacy referred to by the exhibition’s curators - particularly Claire Durand-Ruel, a descendant of the Paul who reinvented the role of the art patron in the 19th and 20th centuries, and Marianne Mathieu from Musée Marmottan - is about the collections, not the paintings. The aim, with these 50-plus artworks, is to highlight new aspects of the great movement that made Paris the undisputed art capital of the postwar period. Meanwhile, one artist who strove to reproduce ancient art - “Let it enter one’s blood”, as he often said, is Antonio Canova (1757-1822) to whom Rome is devoting a major retrospective: Canova eterna bellezza at Palazzo Braschi (until 15 March). A follower of Winckelmann and a proponent of the superiority of Greek art, which in his view was the only form to achieve purity, Canova was responsible for the advent of the prolific Neoclassical movement. But his was certainly not a slavish copying of classical art, as his detractors have attempted in vain to assert, but rather a commemoration of it. And this exhibition of sculptures in marble and plaster by him and his contemporaries offers a comprehensive view, with more than 130 items, and shines a spotlight on his way of mak-

Ma sembra quasi impossibile stupirci quando si parla di Impressionismo.

Eppure, la mostra che offre una cinquantina di artisti con opere provenienti dal collezionismo privato se non unica di certo è rara. Palazzo Bonaparte, per celebrare l’apertura di quella che fu la dimora di Maria Letizia Ramolino, mamma di Napoleone, ha scelto un emblema della Francia: l’Impressionismo segreto (fino all’8 marzo). Opere di Cézanne, Pissarro, Sisley, Signac, Gauguin, Renoir, Monet in buona parte mai esposte al pubblico. E non lasciatevi ingannare dalla fanciulla in déshabillé allo specchio sulla locandina: l’intimità a cui fanno riferimento i curatori della mostra, in particolare Claire Durand-Rouel, discendente di quel Paul che tra Otto e Novecento reinventò il ruolo del mecenate e da Marianne Mathieu del Musée Marmottan riguarda il collezionismo. Con l’intento, attraverso le oltre 50 opera, di far emergere aspetti nuovi della grande corrente artistica che fece di Parigi la nuova capitale indiscussa dell’arte fino al secondo dopoguerra. Chi invece ebbe l’ardire di riproporre l’antico, “che bisogna mandarselo in sangue” come amava ripetere, è Antonio Canova (17571822) a cui Roma dedica una la prima grande retrospettiva: Canova eterna bellezza a Palazzo Braschi (fino al 15 marzo). Lui, seguace di Winckelmann, assertore della superiorità dell’arte greca, unica a suo dire ad aver raggiunto la purezza, è stato l’artista che ha inaugurato la fruttuosa stagione del Neoclassicismo. Ma non certo una pedissequa copiatura dell’arte classica, come i suoi detrattori hanno tentato inutilmente di liquidare, ma una rievocazione. E la mostra dove tra marmi e gessi, tra opere sue e di artisti al lui contemporanei offre una visione a tutto tondo con oltre 130 opere, mette in evidenza proprio il suo modo

ing sculpture. We know he liked to polish his marbles with wax, and invite his viewers to gaze upon his perfect bodies and languid expressions by candlelight. And this is what the visitor experiences in the first-floor rooms of Palazzo Braschi, where curator Giuseppe Pavello and supervisor Maria Vittoria Marini Clarelli have recreated the artist’s studio and the exhibition space with slowly rotating works and dim lighting. The atmosphere also stimulates reflection on Canova’s historical period. He was attracted by the Rome of the Grand Tour at a time when he was reconsidering his approach to classical art following the discovery of Pompei. The Napoleon-ruled Rome was interpreted by Canova in all its greater or lesser hidden ambition, as he depicted the people dearest to him. Although it captures the human spirit, the exhibition dedicated to Raphael (1483-1520) at the Scuderie del Quirinale (until 14 June) is far from intimate.

This is not the only show to celebrate the great Renaissance artist, hated by Michelangelo, and viewed with fondness by Leonardo. If he hadn’t died 500 years ago aged just 37, he would probably have outshone his longer-lived colleagues, because he was the synthesis of them both. He produced many works, particularly in the Uffizi. But the highly capable and pleasing Raphael can be found all around: from the Pantheon where he is buried, to the Vatican and Villa Farnesina. The pleasure of living in comfortable houses, in modern buildings and natural settings was the real focus of the multifaceted artist Gio Ponti (1891-1979). Forty years after his death, the Maxxi in Rome celebrates his work in Amare l’architettura (until 13 April). On display is his architecture, from the cathedral of Taranto - a re-reading of Gothic style with a focus on its lightness - to the Pirelli tower in Milan, the first and most famous of Italian skyscrapers.

But Gio Ponti, who emerged unharmed by two world wars and Fascism without ever becoming mired in ideology, is also famous for his ceramics - working first with Richard Ginori and later with Franco Pozzi - and for his skill as a communicator. It was he who founded and ran Domus, the prestigious design and architecture magazine. And he also had ingenious ideas, as curators Maristella Casciato, Fulvio Irace, Margherita Guccione, Salvatore Licita and Francesca Zanella point out, for furnishing homes which needed to be modern, comfortable and functional. And it was he who, decades ahead of his time, aspired to vertical living, but in cities surrounded by green spaces.

Quella Roma assoggettata poi a Napoleone che Canova riuscì a interpretarne le più e meno recondite ambizioni ritraendo i personaggi a lui più cari. Non è intima anche se coglie l’anima umana, la mostra che le Scuderie del Quirinale dedicano a Raffaello (1483-1520). Non è l’unica che celebra il grande artista del Rinascimento (fino al 14 giugno), odiato da Michelangelo, guardato con simpatia da Leonardo. Se non fosse morto a soli 37 anni, 500 anni fa, avrebbe probabilmente messo in ombra gli altri due colleghi ben più longevi, perché di loro ne fu la sintesi. Tante opere e in particolare dagli Uffizi.

Ma Raffaello, uomo bello capace e piacevole va incontrato a giro: dal Pantheon dove è sepolto alle Stanze Vaticane, a Villa Farnesinaa. E puntava davvero alla piacevolezza di vivere in case comode, in palazzi moderni, in ambienti immersi nel verde, quel poliedrico artista che è stato Gio Ponti (1891-1979). A quarant’anni dalla sua scomparsa il Maxxi di Roma gli dedica Amare l’architettura (fino al 13 aprile). In mostra le sue architettura, dalla Cattedrale di Taranto con cui rilegge l’arte gotica facendone emergere la lievità, al grattacielo della Pirelli a Milan. Il primo e più famoso palazzo verticale italiano. Ma Giò Ponti che ha attraversato indenne due guerre e il Fascismo, senza lasciarsi mai intrappolare dalle ideologie, è famoso anche per le sue ceramiche _ collaboratore prima di Richard Ginori e poi di Franco Pozzi _, così come per la sua capacità divulgativa.

E’ lui che fonda e dirige fino alla fine Domus, la prestigiosa rivista di arredi e architettura. Ed è sempre lui che ha intuizioni geniali, come sottolineano i curatori Maristella Casciato e Fulvio Irace con Margherita Guccione, Salvatore Licita e Francesca Zanella, per arredare case che devono essere moderne, comode e funzionali. Ed è sempre lui che in largo anticipo sui tempi aspira sì alla verticalità, ma in città immerse nel verde.

A collaboration between Ferrari and Rome is now a reality thanks to the creation of a car whose name is inspired by the millennia-old city as famous the world over as Ferrari’s Prancing Horse.

The Ferrari Roma, the most recent invention by the Maranello-based company, was presented to the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in his official residence, a testament to the value – symbolic included – of Ferrari’s choice. Indeed, the manufacturer rarely uses geographical names for its automobiles, instead preferring numbers and initials. President of Ferrari, John Elkann, and vice-president, Piero Ferrari, demonstrated the car’s technical features to Mattarella, marking the first time the vehicle had left the workshop. “It was an honor to present the Ferrari Roma to President Mattarella,” said Elkann, “because its name symbolizes the best of our country: elegance, innovation, and technological excellence. It is a jewel of style and performance, bound to be admired on the world’s streets.”

The jewel President Elkann was referring to is a car inspired by the Rome of half a century ago, a period known colloquially as the Dolce Vita, characterized by elegance, courage, frivolity, style, and the joy of living life to its fullest. The Ferrari Roma borrowed and reinterpreted in a contemporary manner the lifestyle and elegance of those years. The color chosen for the launch isn’t the Ferrari red typical of the company’s high-performance, high-speed cars; the lines are well-proportioned and “clean,” calling to mind the 250 GT, the history of Italian automobiles and design.

The name “Roma” is a rare gem in the Ferrari universe: there are very few times that the company has bestowed this “honor” to a city that hasn’t been directly tied to the company in terms of geography or sports, like the Monza and Daytona, which bring to mind epic racing competitions, or the Maranello and Fiorano, both tributes to Emilia-Romagna, where the brand originates, not to mention the Dino. Di quel periodo la Ferrari Roma ha preso e reinterpretato in chiave contemporanea il lifestyle, soprattutto l’eleganza e la raffinatezza. In terms of technical details - something of the utmost importance to fans of performance and technology - the Ferrari Roma is a midfront-engine 2+ coupé with a turbo-charged V8 engine, part of the class that has won Engine of the Year for four consecutive years. The motor, 620 CV at 7,500 rpm, is combined with a new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, which was introduced for the first time in the SF90 Stradale. The engineers in Maranello dedicated close attention to the sound of the exhaust system, equipped with a Gasoline Particulate Filter and redesigned without mufflers and with new dump valves.

The 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is particularly suited for city driving. The maximum speed is more than 320 km, which is the only missing link in this synergy with Rome’s historic streets. But a Ferrari can’t go without it. Never.

Touring a city and getting to know the places where the locals go to pick up ingredients for their day’s meals is experiencing the city in the most authentic way. In Rome, every neighborhood has its daily street market selling fresh fruit and vegetables and delicatessen delights, in addition to a few Sunday flea markets, full of vintage and antique treasures where you might manage to secure a bargain.

CAMPO DE FIORI Definitely one of the city’s oldest markets, Campo dei Fiori is both a tourist attraction, where tourists hope to find authentic Roman delicacies, and a local market where Rome residents come to buy groceries.

On this picturesque piazza- housing one of the city’s oldest and most delicious bakeries- you can find souvenirs of all kinds, from T-shirts to miniature liquor bottles, but mostly fresh flowers, fruit and vegetables and a wide variety of ready-made spice mixes for the seasoning of Italian pasta dishes, such as carbonara, amatriciana and cacio e pepe, as well as risottos in a packet and three-colored pasta. The market is open Monday through Friday from 7.30 am to 2.30 pm.

MERCATO TRIONFALE Mercato Trionfale is considered to be not only Rome’s first and biggest local market, but also Italy’s and Europe’s largest street market. Located on Via Andrea Doria, just steps away from the Vatican, the market is open every day of the week from 7 am to 2 pm and it is mostly frequented by the locals. The many stalls offer fresh and dried fruit, rice and grain of all sorts, freshly-caught fish and dried salt cod, cold cuts, cheese, eggs and wine on tap, in addition to dry goods, clothing, handbags, shoes, toys, Christmas decorations, honey, jams and hard-to-find ethnic cuisine ingredients.
