Love at frst sight exists. I saw Castelfalf the frst time in Winter, on a cloudy day. Probably not the best day to express its beauty at the fullest but, despite that, I was totally mesmerized by the place. And the moment I felt a sense of peace flling my soul, I also saw the huge potential of this place, quickly translated into a clear vision: “Castelfalf deserves to become a paradise on Earth, where you can connect yourself with nature, spoiled by the best service and surrounded by the most refned design.

Castelfalf deserves to be renowned among the top destinations in the world, as it can provide an experience no other place can ofer.”

As it turned out, that we acquired this property in 2021, with the goal of transforming it into a worldclass organic estate in an immersive environment. It is a veritable medieval gem, and its millenary history is further enriched by the

At times, when I walk through Castelfalf’s stone houses and age-old streets, I try to picture it as it once was: an ancient Etruscan settlement, then a property of the Medici family with its historical castle and surrounding estates. With the help of my extraordinary team, I am restoring Castelfalf to its former glory, and even more, to a place where the most demanding travelers will be invited to embrace a slower pace of life, to reconnect their body and soul with the natural world, in an environment where excellence is the standard. The projects are many and more and more ambitious, but my holistic vision of transforming this peaceful corner of Tuscany into a place for the wellbeing of body and soul are expressed through the new RAKxa Wellness Spa that combines the Thai wellness culture with the Tuscan traditions.

Artemisia root is one of the raw ingredients of the amaro prepared under the supervision of a local distillery. It has a relaxing efect and is great to relieve fatigue.

About me

I have been working in Castelfalf for 19 years and am currently part of the Real Estate team.

BORN AND RAISED NEAR CASTELFALFI, IRENE IS A VETERAN AMONG THE STAFF

I was born and raised in Montaione, the nearest village to Castelfalf, which I have known all my life. As a young man, my father used to go to the dance hall where Il Rosmarino restaurant is now located. When I was a teenager, my friends and I used to go to the swimming pools in Castelfalf by moped during the summer holidays. We were always sure to have a good time! This is where I grew up. I witnessed the Borgo, the Rocca and the Tabaccaia being renovated, the Resort and the Clubhouse’ construction... all of it, until now.

Travel tip

Besides my beautiful village, Montaione, there is one site that has always fascinated me the most: La Rocca. It is a place of pure magic, an intact piece of history but also a ‘terrace onto the world’. I dare anyone to watch a sunset from up there and not be blown away! I know that I’m a bit biased, but there are few places as beautiful as this.

Sono nata e cresciuta a Montaione, il borgo più vicino a Castelfalf, che conosco da sempre. Mio padre da giovane frequentava il Dancing dove ora c’è il ristorante Il Rosmarino. Da ragazzina, con i miei amici, durante le vacanze estive, raggiungevamo in motorino le piscine di Castelfalf. Il divertimento era assicurato! Questo luogo mi ha visto crescere. Ho vissuto la ristrutturazione del Borgo, de La Rocca e della Tabaccaia, la nascita del resort e della Clubhouse, fno ad oggi. Il consiglio Non posso non citare Montaione, il mio bellissimo paese. C’è un luogo, in particolare, che mi afascina da sempre, è La Rocca, un luogo di pura magia, un pezzo intatto di storia ma anche una ‘terrazza sul mondo’. Sfdo chiunque a osservare un tramonto da lassù e non rimanere a bocca aperta! Sono un po’ di parte, lo so, ma di luoghi stupendi come questo ce ne sono pochi.

I have been working in Castelfalf for 10 years as Real Estate Team Manager.

I am Florentine but call myself a bonafde Tuscan. Afer running a boutique hotel in Via de’ Tornabuoni in Florence, I came here in 2014 to work in the hotel tourism development and real estate feld.

Travel tip

To visit this place on foot, wear comfortable shoes and walk from the Borgo towards the valley, to the golf course and back to the village in the hotel’s direction, stopping at the castle to enjoy the breathtaking view from its terrace.

By bicycle or car, set of to visit Ghizzano, one of the most colorful villages in Tuscany. On the way back, you will experience the thrill of traveling on an ancient Roman track, surrounded by unspoilt countryside with the Castelfalf Castle in front of you... The same feeling that the Lombard prince Faolfo must have felt along that main road, which convinced him to build the castle with the same name.

Sono forentino ma mi defnisco un toscano DOC. Dopo aver diretto un boutique hotel in via de’ Tornabuoni a Firenze sono arrivato qui nel 2014 per occuparmi di sviluppo turistico alberghiero e Real Estate.

Il consiglio

Per visitare questo luogo a piedi, indossate scarpe comode e dal Borgo incamminatevi verso la vallata, fno al campo da golf e rientrate in paese procedendo in direzione dell’hotel, fermandovi al castello per godervi il panorama mozzafato dalla sua terrazza. In bicicletta o in automobile, invece, andate in direzione di Ghizzano (uno dei borghi più colorati della Toscana). Di ritorno proverete l’emozione di una strada antica - un antico tracciato romano - circondati dalla campagna incontaminata, col castello di Castelfalf davanti a voi... La stessa sensazione che deve aver provato il principe longobardo Faolfo lungo quella via maestra che lo convinse a far costruire, appunto, l’omonimo castello.

We were looking for something unique and we fell in love with Castelfalf at frst sight. It was a luxury hotel in the heart of Tuscany, and it felt to us like a secret that we were so excited to share with our friends and family. Everything was so beautiful, we will remember this for the rest of our lives. Volevamo fare qualcosa di unico e con Castelfalf è stato amore a prima vista. Era un hotel di lusso nel cuore della Toscana, ci è sembrato un segreto che non vedevamo l’ora di condividere con i nostri amici e familiari. È stato tutto bellissimo, lo ricorderemo per il resto della nostra vita.

They met in Chicago and fell in love at frst sight, he proposed on a sailing boat on Lake Michigan and they got married in Tuscany. They are Amy Greenawalt and Dan Wolf and, of all the places in the world where they could have fulflled their love dream, they chose Castelfalf.

Why did you choose Castelfalf as your wedding destination?

We were looking for something unique and I could think of no better place in the world than Italy for our own wedding. We soon realized that Tuscany was the perfect place. My mother came across Castelfalf online. When we saw the photos, we immediately booked a trip and fell in love with it the moment we arrived.

What struck you?

It was a luxury hotel in the heart of Tuscany, it felt to us like a secret that we were so excited to share with our friends and family.

What did you enjoy the most?

The staf. Amazing professionals and all very kind! We talked and they were by my side when I was a bit stressed. With Viola, from the events team, we established such a special bond that she even came to Chicago to spend some time with us.

What is the best memory of your wedding?

Everything! The views, taking photos around the castle, sensing the love from all our friends and family when cutting the wedding cake together. We will remember that day for the rest of our lives.

Your advice for those who wish to get married in Castelfalf?

The event staf is top-notch and knows how to plan weddings. Just tell your guests that Castelfalf has everything: the spa, pools, activities to choose from, restaurants, and that they need to spend a few days there taking it all in. And one last piece of advice: make sure you do the Aperitivo Hour while the sun is setting, it’s pure magic.

Volevamo fare qualcosa di unico e non riuscivo a pensare a un posto migliore dell’Italia. Dan è stato subito felice della mia proposta e in breve abbiamo capito che la Toscana era il luogo perfetto. Castelfalf l’ha scoperto mia madre online. Quando abbiamo visto le foto abbiamo subito prenotato un viaggio e appena arrivati ce ne siamo innamorati.

Cosa vi ha colpito?

Era un hotel di lusso nel cuore della Toscana, un segreto che non vedevamo l’ora di condividere con i nostri amici e familiari.

Cosa avete apprezzato di più?

Il personale. Professionisti fantastici e di grande umanità! Parlavamo spesso e in molti mi sono stati vicini nei momenti di stress. Con Viola, del team eventi, è nato un legame così speciale che è venuta addirittura a trovarci a Chicago.

Il ricordo più bello del vostro matrimonio?

Tutto! I panorami, le foto al castello, l’amore dei nostri cari al taglio della torta. Quel giorno lo ricorderemo per sempre.

Un consiglio per chi vuole sposarsi a Castelfalf?

Il team eventi è di prim’ordine e sa come si organizzano i matrimoni. Assicuratevi solo di dire ai vostri ospiti che Castelfalf è un luogo da vivere e che devono trascorrerci qualche giorno per godersi tutto: la spa, le piscine, le tante attività tra cui scegliere e i ristoranti. Ah! Un ultimo consiglio: fate l’aperitivo all’ora del tramonto, è magico.

Ci piace il campo da golf e la Clubhouse. Castelfalf è ottimo per la sua posizione centrale rispetto a tante meravigliose città e musei toscani... Per non parlare delle cantine vitivinicole. E non vediamo l’ora che i bambini provino il parco avventura.

Rebeca and Tim Ciasulli live in New Hampshire, on the US Northeast coast. Tim is a marketing consultant and brand guru. They frst arrived in Castelfalf in 2014. In 2015, they purchased their own farmhouse, Casiscala, which was completed in 2016.

How did you discover Castelfalf?

Tim was leafng through the Robb Report magazine, when at one point he came across an advertisement for Castelfalf and exclaimed, “This place looks incredible! 27 golf holes, wine and olive oil production, a medieval village and castle between Florence and Pisa, plus hundreds of interesting places to discover within an hour’s radius.”

What were you looking for?

A renovated period farmhouse that also had a nice view. That same weekend we few to Tuscany and reached Castelfalf. They showed us Casiscala due to its fantastic views and proximity to the Borgo. It was love at frst sight!

A top tip for living here?

We love the golf course and the Clubhouse. Castelfalf is great for its central location to the most beautiful Tuscan art cities and museums... Not to mention the wineries. Speaking of wine, since we bought our house, the wine from Castelfalf has evolved into a frstclass wine. We also can’t wait for the children to try out the adventure park.

A nearby discovery you would like to share with our readers?

We ofen take our guests on a visit to the Antinori Winery in the south of Florence. We also like the Leonardo da Vinci Museum in Vinci: it is a quick trip to a quaint village and it is suitable for all ages. To enjoy local home cooking, we like to go to the Osteria San Vivaldo in Montaione. Carla’s cooking is like her mother’s, maybe even better.

Un casale d’epoca ristrutturato che avesse anche una bella vista. Quello stesso weekend siamo volati in Toscana e abbiamo raggiunto Castelfalf. Ci hanno mostrato Casiscala per il suo fantastico panorama e la vicinanza al Borgo. È stato un colpo di fulmine!

Un consiglio top per vivere qui?

Amiamo il campo da golf e la Clubhouse. Castelfalf è ottimo per la sua posizione centrale rispetto alle più belle città d’arte e musei toscani... Per non parlare delle cantine vitivinicole. A proposito di vino, da quando abbiamo acquistato la nostra casa, il vino di Castelfalf si è evoluto in un vino di prima classe. Inoltre, non vediamo l’ora che i bambini provino il parco avventura.

Una scoperta nei dintorni da condividere con i lettori?

Spesso portiamo i nostri ospiti in visita alla Cantina Antinori, a sud di Firenze. Ci piace anche il Museo Leonardo da Vinci: è una gita veloce nel caratteristico borgo di Vinci, adatta a tutte le età. Per gustare la cucina casalinga locale ci piace andare all’Osteria San Vivaldo a Montaione. La cucina di Carla è come quella della mamma, forse meglio.

CASTELFALFI : AN EXEMPLARY ECOSYSTEM REFLECTING THE HARMONY BETWEEN LANDSCAPE, NATURE AND LIFESTYLE

Aphilosophy based for a long time on the principles of sustainability works in favor of Castelfalf. In the heart of Tuscany’s most untouched countryside, on the border between Florence, Siena and Pisa and near some historical towns such as Volterra, San Gimignano and San Miniato, this village of Etruscan origin has been at risk of depopulation for many years.

It has been committed to landscape restoration, biodiversity protection and enhancement of quality food production for over a decade, by adopting organic farming practices across its 1,100 hectares of vineyards, olive groves, woods and lakes (within the estate there is also a wildlife reserve, old farmhouses and Tuscany’s largest golf course). Everything was designed to be as eco-friendly as possible, as for instance, the choice of materials, the buildings’ energy performance, the project adapting to the landscape (any change or addition adapts to the vegetation, not the other way around) and the use of natural lighting in order not to alter darkness and night time. At the base of this process, which has made Castelfalf an exemplary ecosystem refecting the harmony between landscape, nature and lifestyle, are the management of water resources, recycling and the development of renewable energy

The estate is 100% water autonomous: it is supplied with self-produced drinking water owing to dams that collect rainwater and to the purifcation plants that turn it into drinking water for all needs. All structures are equipped with wood biomass power plants and with an innovative heating and cooling system fueled with wood chips harvested within 50-km radius.

Una flosofa volta da tempo ai principi della sostenibilità gioca a favore di Castelfalf Nel cuore della Toscana più incontaminata, al confne tra Firenze, Siena e Pisa e poco lontano da alcuni centri storici come Volterra, San Gimignano e San Miniato, questo borgo dalle origini etrusche per molti anni è stato a rischio di spopolamento. Ma da oltre 10 anni ha visto convergere importanti investimenti volti al ripristino paesaggistico, alla salvaguardia della biodiversità e alla valorizzazione delle produzioni agroalimentari di qualità, nel pieno rispetto dei principi dell’agricoltura biologica su 1.100 ettari di vigneti, oliveti, boschi e laghi (all’interno della tenuta ci sono anche una riserva faunistica, antichi casali e il più grande campo da golf della Toscana). La tenuta ha un’autonomia idrica del 100%: autoproduce acqua potabile grazie a dighe create per la raccolta dell’acqua piovana, che, purifcata da appositi impianti, viene poi distribuita per tutti i fabbisogni della tenuta. Sono presenti centrali a biomassa legnosa in tutte le strutture e un innovativo sistema di riscaldamento e rafreddamento è alimentato a cippato raccolto nel raggio di 50 chilometri.

Golden sunsets, gullies, sof hills, felds of wheat... This is the allencompassing Tuscan image that appears before my eyes when I think of Castelfalf.”

Speaking is Stefano Ricci, who has been synonymous with excellence in men’s fashion and lifestyle for over 50 years.

A pioneer of beauty, he has always drawn inspiration for his collections from his greatest passions: nature and travel, as proven by Stefano Ricci Explorer, the brand’s fascinating campaigns around the world, in partnership with National Geographic photographers.

A tireless globetrotter with a Tuscan heart who, in addition to his native Florence, where he was born and where his strictly handcrafed production is based, has a special bond with two other places: Mugello, where his Poggio ai Segugi estate is located, and Castelfalf.

He talks of this latter, magical Tuscan destination as follows, “I discovered this unspoilt paradise an hour from Florence during a hunting trip in 1985 and immediately fell in love with it.”

So that was how the famous designer

A parlare è Stefano Ricci, da più di 50 anni sinonimo di eccellenza nell’universo della moda e del lifestyle maschile Pioniere del bello, che da sempre trae ispirazione per le collezioni dalle sue più grandi passioni: la natura e i viaggi, come dimostra Stefano Ricci Explorer, il progetto delle afascinanti campagne del brand realizzate in giro per il mondo con i fotograf di National Geographic. Un instancabile globetrotter, dunque, ma dal cuore toscano che, oltre alla sua Firenze, dove è nato e ha sede la produzione rigorosamente artigianale, ha un legame speciale con altri due luoghi: il Mugello (dove sorge la sua tenuta Poggio ai Segugi) e Castelfalf. Di quest’ultima, magica destinazione toscana, egli stesso racconta: “Ho scoperto questo paradiso incontaminato a un’ora da Firenze durante una battuta di caccia nel 1985 e me ne sono subito innamorato”.

A BEAUTY PIONEER, HE FELL IN LOVE WITH CASTELFALFI IN THE 1980S

decided to buy an old powder magazine from the 14th century, right opposite the castle that dominates the Borgo, and make it his country home in such a special place.

“I have renovated it,” Stefano Ricci continues, “I refurbished it twice in recent years, but I have never slept there once, because I like to think of it just as it is, always ready to welcome my guests, especially today.”

Making the bond between Stefano Ricci and Castelfalf even more lasting is the more recent, yet equally deep story of his great friendship with the Lohia family. A long-time friend of Aloke Lohia, who in 2012 was among the guests at the exclusive show for the 40th anniversary of the brand (the frst and only one in the history of the Ufzi Gallery), Stefano Ricci with his sons Niccolò and Filippo has stayed in touch with this important Indian family over the years. And it should be mentioned that Aloke Lohia was so impressed by the city that, not long aferwards, he chose Florence for his daughter’s wedding for what will always be the most spectacular Indian wedding ever to be seen on the streets of the Tuscan capital. He ended up forging a true friendship with Sri Prakash Lohia (friendship is a word that means a lot to the Riccis), and when the latter bought Castelfalf, the Florentine designer welcomed the news with joy, “I was extremely happy, both

È così che il famoso designer decise di comprare un’antica polveriera del Trecento, proprio di fronte al castello che domina il Borgo, e farla diventare la sua casa di campagna in un luogo così speciale. “L’ho ristrutturata - prosegue Stefano Ricci - rimessa a posto due volte in questi anni, ma non ci ho mai dormito, perché mi piace immaginarla così. Pronta ad accogliere i miei ospiti, soprattutto oggi”.

A rendere ancora più indissolubile il legame che unisce Stefano Ricci a Castelfalf è una storia più recente, ma altrettanto forte: quella della sua grande amicizia con la famiglia Lohia. Amico di lunga data di Aloke Lohia, che nel 2012 era tra gli invitati dell’esclusiva sflata per i 40 anni del brand (la prima e unica nella storia della Galleria degli Ufzi), Stefano Ricci con i fgli Niccolò e Filippo ha mantenuto negli anni i rapporti con questa importante famiglia indiana. E non è certo super fuo ricordare che Aloke Lohia rimase così colpito dalla città che, dopo non molto, scelse per le nozze di sua fglia proprio Firenze per quello che rimarrà il più spettacolare matrimonio indiano mai visto per le vie forentine.

Fino all’incontro con Sri Prakash Lohia, con il quale la conoscenza è diventata una sincera amicizia - parola che signifca molto per i Ricci - tanto che, quando Prakash Lohia ha acquistato Castelfalf, il designer forentino ha salutato con gioia la notizia: “Sono stato estremamente

because it is nice to know that we have more opportunities to meet, as in fact we do, and because I am sure that a place I love is being looked afer by someone I truly respect and trust. I know he will do his best to take care of it and bring it to its full glory.”

Uniting the two are a passion for beauty, art and the highest forms of crafsmanship

Other sources of inspiration for Stefano Ricci, not only for his fashion designs and fabrics, but also for the interior design projects of his boutiques (there are 70 of them in the world’s most important cities, and 20 shop-in-shops) which he personally follows and which mirror the genius loci of his Tuscany, the great traditions that shape it and the materials that make up the landscapes.

From Rapolano travertine, to Carrara marble, and Mugello sandstone, shaped by the expert hands of stonemasons, still live on in the Poggio ai Segugi estate.

This is how the experience inside the boutiques transforms into something that goes beyond fashion, a way of bringing customers into his world.

So much so that they ofen involve him in the interior design projects of their residences or super yachts, seeking his skillfull interpretation of materials and the fnest workmanship.

CASTELFALFI THROUGH THE AGES : THE REMARKABLE STORY OF A LITTLE TUSCAN VILLAGE

Nestled among the Tuscan hills between Florence and Pisa, Castelfalf looks like a gigantic stone dragon that has been asleep for millennia on a bed of woods, meadows and streams... This unchanging and mysterious feeling that time has stopped is something that Castelfalf holds within it, narrated by every single stone, enclosed in the Borgo’s streets, lost in the meanders of the castle. This is what makes history - eternal life teacher, that settles knowledge, experience and values in places and people, turning them into spontaneous gestures and atmospheres - so fascinating.

ORIGINS

Letting ourselves be carried away by memories engraved in paper, it all began in 754; it dates back to that frst written evidence of the existence of Castelfalf, Faolf Castrum, namely Faolfo’s Castle, the Prince of Lombardy who was the probably the frst one afer the Etruscan settlement to build a fortress, a tower, a fortifed place on the trade route that joined Lucca with Chiusi, passing through Siena, and who in the name Castelfalf celebrates the eternity of

GLI INIZI

Lasciandoci trascinare dalla memoria delle carte, tutto inizia nel 754; risale ad allora la prima testimonianza scritta dell’esistenza di Castelfalf, Castrum Faolf ossia il Castello di Faolfo, il principe longobardo che, dopo l’insediamento etrusco, fu probabilmente il primo a costruire una rocca, una torre, un luogo fortifcato sulla direttrice commerciale che univa Lucca a Chiusi, passando per Siena e che nel nome Castelfalf celebra l’eternità della sua esistenza. Le carte tacciono per quasi quattrocento anni, ma nel 1230 ritroviamo Castelfalf in una nuova veste, non più

THE BORGO ORIGINATED IN THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES

his existence. Then, all traces of it fell silent for almost 400 years, until, 1230 we fnd Castelfalf under a new guise, no longer a feudal castle but an independent city-state that, while retaining its independence, came under the jurisdiction of the neighbouring and more powerful San Miniato community.

15TH CENTURY PROSPERITY

Moving forward in time, we reach the 15th century, a period fush with documentary evidence that takes us into the streets, the houses, the castle of Castelfalf, introducing us to its inhabitants and their activities one by one: thirty-fve families lived in Castelfalf in 1427; the average age was 27 years old, the main activity was farming and a charcoal kiln was the energy provider of the Borgo. We thus know, for example, the patriarchal family of Andrea di Bondo with three houses in the Borgo and many farms that, when cultivated, yielded products that are still typical of this land today, oil, wine and wheat; Andrea also owns an olive press for producing the same oil that can still be savoured nowadays in Castelfalf. FLORIDO QUATTROCENTO

Passeggiando nella storia arriviamo nel XV secolo, quando le fonti documentarie si fanno ricche e permettono di entrare fra le vie del Borgo, nelle case, nel castello, conoscendo uno per uno gli abitanti e le loro attività: 35 famiglie vivevano a Castelfalf nel 1427; l’età media era di 27 anni, l’attività principale era l’agricoltura e una carbonaia era il giacimento energetico del Borgo. Conosciamo così, per esempio, la famiglia patriarcale di Andrea di Bondo con tre case nel Borgo e tanti poderi che, coltivati, rendono i prodotti ancora oggi tipici di questa terra, olio, vino e grano; Andrea possiede anche un frantoio per produrre quello stesso olio che ancora oggi si assapora a Castelfalf. Sorprendono nelle strade della memoria di carta del XV secolo, i nomi dei poderi - Cerchiaia, Falecine, Poggio I Soli, San Piero - sempre gli stessi, in linea con una tradizione millenaria.

THE BORGO WAS BUILT IN THE 8TH CENTURY BY THE LONGOBARD FAOLFO

ORIGINALLY SETTLED BY ANCIENT ETRUSCANS AND ONCE OWNED BY THE MEDICIS, THE HISTORICAL CASTLE AND ITS SURROUNDING PROPERTIES PASSED THROUGH A VARIETY OF STEWARDS BEFORE BEING LEFT UNINHABITED AS A RESULT OF WORLD WAR II (PH. DARIO GAROFALO)

THE NAME COULD DERIVE FROM CASTRUM FAOLFI, LATER CHANGED INTO CASTELFALFI

(Cerchiaia, Falecine, Poggio I Soli, San Piero) remain the same, in line with a thousandyear-old tradition.

FROM CASTLE TO RESIDENCE

In the 15th century, it was the Caetani, a Pisan family - the Tuscan branch of wealthy merchants originally from the Kingdom of Naples - who possessed the castle and who modernised it, enhanced it, and made it into a Renaissance residence. Made up of two original 14th-century towers owned by the Guelphs - a Florentine magistracy with the specifc aim of defending the land - the castle loses its identity as a place of protection and control along the road between Lucca and Siena and becomes a noble residence

The heirs of Francesco Caetani slowly begin to establish themselves in the other areas of the Borgo and the castle area.

LORENZO DE’ MEDICI

The succession between the four heirs Benedetto, Giuliano, Donato and Giovanfrancesco Caetani was so difcult, it required a judge. The role of external arbitrator was entrusted to Lorenzo de’ Medici, known as the Magnifcent

The year is 1487, and Lorenzo - the most important man in Italy, and one of the most infuential and powerful persons in national and international policies - is the arbitrator called upon to divvy up the Caetani family’s property. It was Giovanfrancesco, however, who chose Castelfalf as his residence: in 1489 Giovanfrancesco Caetani married Costanza di Averardo de’ Medici, a second-degree relative of Lorenzo; we do not know if they married in Castelfalf but

Nel XV secolo sono i Caetani, famiglia pisana, ramo toscano di ricchi mercanti originari del Regno di Napoli, che possiedono il castello e che lo ammodernano, lo arricchiscono, ne fanno una residenza rinascimentale. Composto da due torri originarie, trecentesche, di proprietà della Parte Guelfa, magistratura forentina con il preciso scopo di difesa del territorio, il castello perde la sua identità di luogo di protezione e controllo lungo la strada tra Lucca e Siena e diviene una residenza signorile. È un lento processo quello con cui gli eredi di Francesco Caetani, iniziano a installarsi fra le altre zone del Borgo, nell’area del castello. LORENZO DE’ MEDICI

Una successione difcile quella fra i quattro eredi Benedetto, Giuliano, Donato e Giovanfrancesco Caetani, tale da imporre un giudice, un arbitro esterno scelto in Lorenzo de’ Medici detto il Magnifco: siamo nel 1487, Lorenzo è l’uomo più importante d’Italia, ago della bilancia determinante per la politica nazionale e internazionale e proprio lui è l’arbitro interpellato nella divisione dei beni dei Caetani. Fu però Giovanfrancesco che elesse Castelfalf come sua residenza: nel 1489 Giovanfrancesco Caetani sposò Costanza di Averardo de’ Medici, parente di secondo grado dello stesso Lorenzo; non sappiamo se si sposarono a Castelfalf, ma vissero nelle stanze del castello che loro stessi avevano ammodernato. they lived in the rooms of the castle that they themselves had modernised. The portrait of the young Costanza is a reminder of that and it, which has remained in Castelfalf until 1890, in the place where it was perhaps painted by a great Italian Renaissance painter. Eternal legacies of a unique period in Italian history which Castelfalf lived through serenely from century to century up until the 1500s when Italy, shaken by various foreign invasions, gradually saw its prestige wane in Europe.

16TH CENTURY TORMENT

Castelfalf also entered the vortex of those mercenary raids between Spanish armies and Lansquenets, sufering the stealing of Piero Strozzi’s troops in the war between Siena and Florence in 1554 Of this troubled period, we are lef with the papers of the new Statutes of the community, drawn up between 1546 and 1582: laws, norms and customs which the Borgo relied upon to give itself rules and practices to follow, whilst always respecting the individual autonomy and protecting the environment, such as the rules to utilise the forest or the ones governing wine and oil cultivation

SAINT FLORIAN

But another heart also beats in Castelfalf, that of the Church of San Floriano, the Borgo’s other major social and community hub afer the castle. The devotion to Florian, a Christian martyr who sufered persecution at the hands of the Emperor Diocletian in the 3rd century AD, invoked to ward of fres, droughts and other natural disasters, has ancient origins in Castelfalf dating back

UN CINQUECENTO TRAVAGLIATO

Anche Castelfalf entra nel vortice di queste scorribande mercenarie tra lanzichenecchi ed eserciti spagnoli, subendo nel 1554 il saccheggio delle truppe di Piero Strozzi nell’ambito della guerra fra Siena e Firenze. Ma a Castelfalf batte anche un altro cuore, quello della chiesa di San Floriano, altro grande centro aggregativo e sociale del Borgo, dopo il castello. to the end of the 13th century, and shaped a place of worship much diferent than the one we see today, the result of a 16thcentury restoration. In 1520 a pastoral visit describes a simple church with no authentic high altar yet; the church of a small village where we can imagine the hardworking people of Castelfalf congregating for the most important rites. Despite it being a small church, it boasts a great Christian value, the baptismal font, which is the way through which a person joins the religious community and, in a certain sense, civil society too, to become a member of that community, with an indelible sign that they belong to a group, that they belong to Castelfalf.

FROM THE 17TH CENTURY TO THE MODERN AGE

In 1619, the confraternity of the Blessed Conception of Mary was founded, whose rooms are still adjacent to the main part of the church. PRODUCTION IN THE 20TH CENTURY

In the 19th century it was perhaps the difusion of tobacco cultivation throughout the area between Castelfalf, Montaione, Peccioli, Gambassi and Palaia that represented the most radical change for our Borgo, which underwent slow process of modernisation, in which even women would begin to be employed not only for domestic tasks and the management of vegetable gardens and small farm animals, but also for broader production tasks becoming tobacconists. The post-World War II economic boom touched Castelfalf which, strengthened by tradition, history, culture and a thousand-year-old way of life, has maintained its identity while adapting to modern times, as it has for more than a 1000 years; this is something that can be seen today in the Borgo’s urban fabric, in its colors, sounds, people and favors.

Golf is deceptively simple and infnitely complicated.” These are words from Arnold Palmer, one of the strongest golfers in the history of the sport, one of the frst to transform the sport into an open discipline.

The dissemination of clubs has made taking part in the sport easier and kept the focus on the greens and holes.

Hence, it is more than normal to fnd players and instructors of all ages and backgrounds on the courses of Castelfalf Golf Club, from novices to professionals with a low handicap and a few trophies under their belts.

There is also opening for the disable, who are able to play golf safely on the Castelfalf grass, as the director Manola Alberti tells us: “We create activities according to individual possibilities but we have fun together both on the driving range or the putting green, and the actual courses as well.”

Benefts of golf are so many: “Here we are in the middle of nature, then there are the implications of concentration, of being around other people”.

It is anything but a showy pastime.

Alessio Bruschi is one of the professional instructors at the Golf Club. In addition to coaching the main professional women’s golf circuit in the world, he manages to engage both the most experienced players and the new enthusiasts through his dynamic personalized classes

Un’apertura che riguarda anche i disabili, che sull’erba di Castelfalf trovano la possibilità di praticare il golf in sicurezza, come racconta la direttrice Manola Alberti: “Creiamo attività in base alle singole possibilità ma ci divertiamo tutti sia sul campo pratica che sul putting green. Manola Alberti is the Director of the Golf Club and coordinates all its activities, from the ABC of the discipline to the tournaments. Here is her description of how you can become a golfer in Castelfalf

READY, SET, GO!

We do introductory individual or group golf lessons, mainly designed to fnd out if you are interested in this sport. We explain what golf is, we have the driving range for the long game, two putting greens for the short game, the pitching green and, of course, the 27-hole course, the largest in Tuscany, with its two courses.

THE FIRST 10 LESSONS

Afer the frst lesson with one of our teachers, you decide whether or not you want to continue. If you decide to continue, we suggest lesson packages to the aspiring golfer that include entrance to the driving range, an instructor, balls and equipment. Afer these 10 or so introductory lessons, it comes the time to choose whether you want to get out onto the real green.

FIG MEMBERSHIP

Membership with the Italian Golf Federation (FIG) is then formalised, which gets the process of ‘certifying’ your status as a golfer underway: you practice with the instructor until you are issued a green card to play on your own, preceded by a federal lesson of about two hours. From there on, you’ll be a self-sufcient golfer, with your golf handicap, and can sign up for an annual membership with Castelfalf with unlimited access.

ROUTES AND CHALLENGES

We have two courses, with the 9-hole Lake and the 18-hole Mountain, one of the most difcult and challenging in Italy. In reality, the courses are certifed as four courses and we are allowed to mix them up to create all 18-hole courses. Our advice is to head to the Lake Course frst.

NO LIMITS

There are no age limits, except that children have to be 6 years old to be a FIG member. We have between 30 and 40 under-18s taking part each year, and even children under 5, who have in the lessons a more playful approach to the discipline.

PRONTI, ATTENTI, VIA

Facciamo lezioni di approccio al golf con lezioni di gruppo o singole, anche per capire se la disciplina è di interesse. Spieghiamo cos’è il golf, abbiamo il campo pratica per il gioco lungo, due putting green per il gioco corto, il pitching green e ovviamente il campo da 27 buche, il più grande della Toscana, con i suoi due percorsi.

LE PRIME 10 LEZIONI

Fatta la prima lezione con uno dei nostri maestri si decide se proseguire o meno. Se la scelta è di proseguire suggeriamo all’aspirante golfsta dei pacchetti di lezioni che comprendono l’ingresso al campo-pratica, il maestro, le palline e l’attrezzatura. Dopo queste lezioni d’avviamento, circa una decina, arriva il momento di scegliere se si vuole scendere sul vero green.

TESSERAMENTO FIG

Viene fatto il tesseramento alla Federazione Italiana Golf, che dà il via all’iter per ‘certifcare’ lo status da golfsta: si pratica col maestro fnché non viene rilasciata la carta verde per giocare da soli, preceduta da una lezione federale di circa due ore. Da lì in poi il golfsta è autonomo, col suo handicap, e può sottoscrivere con Castelfalf la membership annuale a ingressi illimitati.

PERCORSI E SFIDE

Abbiamo i due percorsi, con il Lake a 9 buche e il Mountain a 18, uno dei più difcili e coinvolgenti d’Italia. In realtà i percorsi sono certifcati come se fossero quattro campi e siamo autorizzati a mescolarli per crearli tutti a 18 buche. Il consiglio è di approcciarsi prima con il Lake Course.

SENZA LIMITI

Non ci sono limiti di età, tranne quello per i bambini che è di 6 anni per essere tesserati alla FIG. Abbiamo tra i 30 e i 40 under 18 ogni anno, anche bambini al di sotto dei cinque anni, che hanno un approccio più ludico alla disciplina.

THE FALFY KIDS CLUB, A SPECIAL PLACE RESERVED FOR THE LITTLE ONES STAYING AT CASTELFALFI

Choose what you love, and you will not work a single day in your life”. If we had to write something at the entrance of the Falfy Kids Club in Castelfalf, this sentence would just perfect. A mantra, a philosophy that Elisa, Kids Area Coordinator, and her team put into practice every day. The ideas alone are not enough, they need to be fulflled with passion, that together with a solid and accurate preparation, create a competent staf, for managing the broad range of activities ofered to our young guests, every day. The Falfy Kids Club has chosen the Montessori method, which enables children to better manage their own space and time, in a calm and serene environment. The activities carried out vary from practical such as cooking classes and a laboratory for small experiments, to more active games such as video and board games. It is a welcoming and spacious place, with the ground foor reserved for children aged 3 to 6, and the upper foor for children aged 6 to 12, where the kitchen is located, together with interactive games, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch

There are also activities designed for children under 3, but only in the presence of an accompanying adult. The outdoor play area is based on the 4 elements of nature: water, fre, earth and air. Each element is represented by a game: connecting pools for water, a ‘volcano’ slide for fre, a zip line where little ones can feel the wind pushing them through the air, and fnally, earth is represented by a gardening area and little animal friends, 11 bunnies and Falfy the Fox, that has become the mascot of the Kids Club.

Il Falfy Kids Club ha scelto il metodo Montessori che permette ai bambini di gestire al meglio spazi e tempi, in un ambiente calmo e sereno. Le attività che vengono svolte variano dai lavoretti manuali come le lezioni di cucina e il laboratorio per piccoli esperimenti, ai giochi più attivi, come i video games e i giochi da tavolo. Un luogo accogliente e ampio, dove il piano terra è dedicato all’area dai 3 ai 6 anni; mentre al piano superiore si trova l’area dai 6 ai 12 anni con la cucina, i giochi interattivi, PlayStation 5 e Nintendo Switch. Anche i bambini sotto i 3 anni trovano delle attività da svolgere, ma solo in presenza di un accompagnatore. Il parco giochi esterno si basa sui 4 elementi della natura: acqua, fuoco, terra e aria. Ognuno di questi è rappresentato da un gioco: vasche comunicanti per l’acqua, il fuoco rappresentato dallo scivolo ‘vulcano’, l’aria da una zip-line dove i piccoli possono sentire la sensazione del vento che li spinge velocissimi. To my father: it didn’t matter if it was caviar or onion, only the ‘best’ should be on our table.

What is a lesson you will never forget?

I was a young boy and in class a master pastry chef prepared a baked cake without yeast relying only on processing techniques, in that case beaten egg whites. It was a turning point for me.

What is a keyword for Olivina’s style?

Simplicity. Keeping things simple is extremely difcult.

Who is Davide De Simone in one dish?

Ero ragazzino e a lezione un maestro pasticciere preparò una torta da forno senza lievito afdandosi solo alle tecniche di lavorazione, in quel caso gli albumi d’uovo montati a neve. Per me fu la svolta.

Who is Michele Rinaldi?

A host balancing tradition and innovation with the best ingredients. The host is the person who knows how to make his guests happy with empathy, intuition and cooking straight from the heart.

Why did you choose to become a pastry chef?

I chose it because I felt I just had to broaden my skills. Although it’s a hostile territory, it’s also very technical and fascinating. What makes it all so interesting is the absence of approximation. Everything is that way for a reason. The only ingredient that cannot be quantifed is time. Your style in a dish.

Panettone… It is available all year round, even in a summer version with white chocolate, passion fruit, semi-candied mango and matcha tea.

The agricultural estate of Castelfalf includes 2,700 acres, 61 of which dedicated to the viticulture, 118 occupied by olive groves and 300 used for arable crops. A small percentage of vines such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot give life to Cappella del Lupo, for an expression that meets international taste. There is also Vermentino, a white vine widespread throughout central Italy, which has a double interpretation in Castelfalf: the fresher and more immediate one of Poggio I Soli and the more complex and deep one of Fonterinaldo due to the use of cocciopesto amphorae and wood.

When it comes to cocktails and a good drink, Castelfalf is at the top of the game: from excellent and innovative techniques to a range of products and raw materials, an ethos that can be enjoyed every night at the best time: the Aperitivo. Refned blends are created by combining international products with local excellence. The cocktail list boasts a selection of twists on classics that include all the products from the estate and a list of premium spirits. We also have an excellent gin produced by us.

We ofer it with dry tonic and it is also one of our most popular ready-to-drink cocktails. Among this year’s new arrivals is the series of single-serving cocktails prepared with the company’s spirits and ready to be consumed. We ofer them in elegant 200 ml Castelfalf bottles, and they contain our bestsellers and the big IBA classics. It is a way for guests and visitors to enjoy our cocktails not only at the hotel’s lounge bars but also in all the wonderful areas on the estate: in their room or suite, or in the quiet of their own home, or even outside the resort all together.

A TOUR OF THE VALLEYS, HILLS, TOWNS AND SANCTUARIES FROM CASTELFALFI TO SAN GIMIGNANO THROUGH VOLTERRA

THERE ARE PLENTY OF OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPLORE THE LUSH

Just take your time. And once you’re in Castelfalf, you can forget about the car. A crossroads of millenary culture, from the vantage point of its 300 meters above the sea level, this age-old village has been a witness to many of the historical events that tied Florence, Siena and Pisa together. What about reaching San Gimignano or Volterra on a comfortable pedal-assisted e-bike (provided by the hotel) from Castelfalf which, located at the edge of Montaione, is a piece of paradise nestled in nature where you can go back in time? Perhaps along the pilgrims’ route.

SACRO MONTE OF SAN VIVALDO

It was established as a Franciscan monastery that developed into a Sacro Monte in the early 1500s. While Vivaldo, in the 1300s, chose this site for his hermitage, his Franciscan brothers, nearly two centuries later, built here a replica of the holy places of Jerusalem to allow pilgrims to experience the Life and Passion of Christ. In the late 1400s, reaching Jerusalem, which had fallen under the Muslim rule, was very dangerous. And so, the Via Francigena became dotted with chapels that met with Pope Leone X’s approval, including the granting of indulgences to pilgrims. In a few years’ time, scattered across the hill, which is situated about 5 kilometers from Castelfalf, were 25 chapels (of which only 18 remain today), all facing Jerusalem and all decorated with tin-glazed terracotta statue groups representing the Nativity, the fight into Egypt and so on up to the Crucifxion and Ascension.

Crocevia di una storia millenaria, dall’alto dei suoi 300 metri, questo antichissimo borgo è stato spesso testimone degli eventi che hanno legato Firenze a Siena e Pisa. Qui il tempo è sospeso tra arte, storia e natura ed è per questo che si ofre come baricentro per suggestive escursioni da vivere senza stress. E cosa c’è di meglio se non raggiungere San Gimignano o Volterra su una comoda e-bike con pedalata assistita (messa a disposizione degli ospiti dell’hotel) da Castelfalf che, alle porte di Montaione, è un paradiso immerso nella natura dove si può tornare indietro nel tempo. Magari sulla via dei pellegrini.

IL SACRO MONTE DI SAN VIVALDO Nasce come convento francescano, trasformato agli inizi del ‘500 in un Sacro Monte. Se Vivaldo nel ‘300 lo scelse come romitorio, i confratelli quasi due secoli dopo vi costruirono una sorta di Gerusalemme per consentire ai pellegrini di rivivere la vita e la passione di Cristo. A fne ‘400 raggiungere Gerusalemme, ormai saracena, era molto pericoloso. Lungo la via Francigena cominciarono così a sorgere queste cittadelle sacre che Papa Leone X approvò con tanto di indulgenze per i pellegrini. In pochi anni sulla collina a circa 5 chilometri da Castelfalf sorsero 25 cappelle (oggi ne sono rimaste 18), tutte orientate verso Gerusalemme e tutte decorate con gruppi di statue in terracotta invetriata che ripropongono la Natività, la fuga in Egitto e via via fno alla Crocifssione e all’Ascensione.

SANCTUARY OF MONTIGNOSO

Not too far from San Vivaldo, towards Volterra, about a one-hour bicycle ride from Castelfalf, is the Sanctuary of Montignoso Its history lies tied to an ancient castle, while it became a diocesan sanctuary in 2011. Today the Sanctuary is the headquarters of the Community of Our Lady of Fatima and is open to pilgrims and the faithful. Once it was an integral part of a village belonging frstly to San Gimignano and then to Volterra.

SAN GIMIGNANO

It is believed that San Gimignano was given its name by the Archbishop of Canterbury Sigeric on his way back to England, referring to it as an intersection point between Pisa and Siena. The age-old village’s popularity began to soar in the late 1900s. It is now considered to be the best-preserved medieval town, where time seems to have stopped in the 13th century, although only 14 out of the original 72 towers still remain today. It is located about 20 kilometers from Castelfalf and can be easily reached by e-bike. In its churches, Palazzo del Podestà and historic hospitals, history unfolds through the works of the greatest Renaissance artists (Ghirlandaio, Pinturicchio, Filippino Lippi, Jacopo della Quercia, Lippo Memmi and brothers Benedetto and Giuliano da Maiano). And there is room for contemporary art too, at the world-famous Galleria Continua

VOLTERRA

Volterra is located a bit farther away, in the direction of Pisa, about 30 kilometers from Castelfalf. It was one of the most important Etruscan city-states, of which it

SANTUARIO DI MONTIGNOSO

Non troppo distante da San Vivaldo, ma in direzione Volterra, a un’oretta in bici da Castelfalf, si arriva al santuario di Montignoso. La sua storia è legata a un antico castello mentre dal 2011 è divenuto santuario diocesano. Oggi è sede della Comunità Opera di Nostra Signora di Fatima ed è aperto a pellegrini e fedeli. Un tempo era parte integrante di un borgo prima di San Gimignano e poi di Volterra.

SAN GIMIGNANO

Si racconta che fu l’arcivescovo di Canterbury Sigerico, tornando in Inghilterra, a darle questo nome e segnalandola anche come punto di intersezione tra Pisa e Siena. Era verso la fne del 900 quando l’antico borgo iniziò la sua grande fortuna. Oggi è considerato il centro medievale meglio conservato. Anche se delle 72 di un tempo oggi restano solo 14 torri, è qui che la vita sembra essersi fermata al 1200. Da Castelfalf dista una ventina di chilometri facilmente percorribili con le bici elettriche. Nelle sue chiese, i due palazzi del podestà, gli spedali, la storia è raccontata dagli artisti più famosi del Rinascimento (Ghirlandaio, Pinturicchio, Filippino, Jacopo della Quercia, Lippo Memmi e i fratelli Benedetto e Giuliano da Maiano). C’è posto anche per l’arte contemporanea oferta dalla Galleria Continua conosciuta in tutto il mondo.

VOLTERRA

still preserves the ancient city walls with its gate (the frst example of rounded arch), as well as Roman ruins and Renaissance buildings with the fortress built by Lorenzo the Magnifcent afer the war to control the town’s alum mines, precious for fxing the colors of dye in wool. Among the must-sees are the Roman theater, the Alabaster Museum - the mineral of which the area is rich - and the Etruscan Museum

SAN FLORIANO

On the way back to Castelfalf, we suggest a stop at the lovely Church of San Floriano. Florian was a German martyr widely venerated in Austria, Bavaria, Poland, Lombardy and Romagna, but nearly unknown elsewhere. In this area, however, he had a number of followers that led to the construction of a church in the year 1000, rebuilt in the 1500s and again in the early 1900s. Today, the Church of San Floriano, surrounded by the Borgo and overlooking a large garden with breathtaking view of the hills, is a popular wedding destination for both locals and foreign tourists.

SAN FLORIANO

Tornando a Castelfalf, invece, merita una sosta la suggestiva chiesa di San Floriano. Il martire tedesco era venerato in Austria, Baviera, Polonia, Lombardia e Romagna ma ignorato altrove. Qui invece aveva un suo seguito, tanto che la pieve risalente al Mille fu ricostruita nel ‘500 e agli inizi del ‘900. Oggi la chiesa di San Floriano, circondata dal Borgo e afacciata su un ampio giardino sospeso in un panorama mozzafato che si apre sulle colline, è una delle mete più amate dai local e dai turisti stranieri per celebrare le loro nozze.

Castelfalf is immersed in the enchanting Tuscan countryside. From the historical charm of its medieval heritage to the luxury of its accommodations, at Castelfalf time goes by in complete harmony with nature, allowing travelers to delight in the surrounding beauty. Pisa, Florence, Siena and Lucca are less than one hour away by car. Even closer are Volterra, San Gimignano and San Miniato. This region’s charm, however, lies in the many small towns surrounding the Estate, such as Montaione, Lajatico, Certaldo. Now, all you have to do is set out on a trip along lovely roads winding through olive groves, cypress trees and vineyards.

Castelfalf è immerso nell’incanto della campagna toscana.
