Li le treasure chests containing lesser known jewels, delightful places where - thanks to their lack of fame - you can spend a couple of peaceful hours among beautiful things.

FONDAZIONE LUIGI ROVATI

250 works of art spread over two storeys take visitors from the age of the Etruscans to the contemporary art scene, constantly making connections between the two. This is the brand-new Fondazione Rovati, opened last autumn. The exhibition begins downstairs in the Hypogeum, where large earthenware vessels, ex votos, antifixes and small Etruscan bronzes are displayed alongside contemporary works by William Kentridge, Lucio Fontana and Arturo Martini. Next is the great oval room, in which the items on show speak of the Etruscans’ daily life: home, workshop, the sea. A separate space houses the Cercare il bello section: small glass cubes contain jewels, Etruscan necklaces and precious objects, including a gold-plated bronze head of a

woman by Alberto Giacome i. In the centre of the room, the largest display case houses the symbol of the museum, the Cernuschi Warrior, a sophisticated and expressive Etruscan votive bronze. On the Piano Nobile the dialogue between archaeology and contemporary art becomes more intense, presenting the visitor with ideas and emotions both visual and conceptual. Two large spaces are reserved for temporary exhibitions.

CASA MUSEO BAGATTI VALSECCHI

A museum arising from the extraordinary vogue for art collection in the late 19th century. The protagonists are two brothers, barons Fausto and Giuseppe Baga i Valsecchi, who decided to refurbish their family home in the heart of Milan in Renaissance style and fill it with a vast collection of art and artefacts dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. Donated to the Municipality of Milan in 1974 and opened to

the public in 2003, the historic Boschi Di Stefano residence was once the home of husband and wife Antonio Boschi (1896-1988) and Marieda Di Stefano (19011968). The exhibition consists of some 300 artworks selected from the couple’s extensive collection. It constitutes an extraordinary testimony to the history of 20th century Italian art, and includes paintings, drawings and sculpture from the first decade of the century to the late 60s.

VILLA NECCHI CAMPIGLIO

Surrounded by a large private garden with pool and tennis court in the centre of Milan, Villa Necchi Campiglio was completed in 1935. The house was designed by architect Piero Portaluppi for the Necchi Campiglio family, members of the wealthy and sophisticated industrial bourgeoisie of 1930s Milan. The layout reflects the traditional floor plan of noble residences.

A er the Second World War, the villa was refurbished by the architect Tomaso Buzzi, who so ened Portaluppi’s linear style and added decor features inspired by the 18th century, particularly the style of Louis XV.

Adynamic and extravagant city, full of surprises. That is Milan, with its many things to see and do. A city that is always on the move and almost never sleeps. People’s lifestyle is frenetic and moving quickly becomes a necessity both for the residents and for those who visit it for the first time. First of all, forget your car; it is better to use its practical and efficient public transport system. Any part of the city can be easily reached by the metro, bus or the tram, and if that is not enough, you can take advantage of the car or bike sharing services. If instead you prefer

exploring any corner of the historic centre, just wear comfortable shoes. Let us look together at the best ways to enjoy this city of a thousand opportunities.

Take the metro if you want to reach all the main locations in the city easily and quickly. There are 4 tram lines in Milan, M1 red, M2

green, M3 yellow and M5 violet, starting from early morning until a er midnight. If you are planning to get around a lot, we recommend buying a day travelcard at the cost of 7 euros, or you can purchase the Milan Pass which also includes free use of public transport. Milan’s bus system consists of 80 bus lines and 4 trolleybus lines. Very convenient for short routes but it is be er to avoid it at peak times. The Milan pass also includes the tourist bus, the best choice for those who do not know the city and want to discover it on a tour first, especially if you are on holiday with

It was originally a fortress built by Gian Galeazzo Visconti in the 15th century. One hundred years later, Francesco Sforza made it his noble residence a er taking possession of Milan. Located in the square that shares its name, the Duomo is dedicated to Santa Maria Nascente and is Italy’s largest church. Designed by Giuseppe Mengoni, this shopping center’s foundation stone was laid in 1865 by Vi orio Emanuele II, hence its name. From its inception, the Galleria was a meeting place for the Milanese bourgeois, earning it the nickname Milan’s living room. It has a cross plan with an octagonal iron and glass roof, 47 metres high. The visitor’s gaze is drawn toward the floor mosaics, which represent the coats of arms of Rome, Flor-

THE COURTYARD OF CASA ROSSI

This building is a great example of eclectic architecture. It was built by Giuseppe Pestagalli in the 1860s and features a Neo-Renaissance façade on the outside. If you stand in the middle of the courtyard open to the public and you look up, you will see how its structure frames a portion of the blue sky in a perfect octagon.

Eggs that stretch out towards the sky, a gigantic hand, and stars on the square floor. METRO

With five lines, 111 stations and 94.5 kilometres of rails, Milan’s metro system is the largest in Italy. It operates every day from 6:00 to 00:30 (7:00 to 19:30 on 25 December and 1 May). The frequency of trains at major stations varies from 2 to 4 minutes, depending on the month and the timetable.

TRAIN

Milano Centrale station is the main hub connecting Milan to major Italian and European cities, and Cadorna station offers links to destinations in Lombardy. Other state-run railway stations are Garibaldi, Lambrate, Milano Rogoredo and Porta Genova. The

main overland stations correspond with the metro lines, making travel in the area easy and quick.
