TEXT Martina Riva Deputymayorforsport,tourismandyouthpoliciesoftheMilancityhall
Welcome to Milan, a city that will provide you with extraordinary experiences and memories.Sport, fashion, culture, design, major events, innovation, study, meetings, business, whatever the reason for your trip, I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised: Milan will be able to satisfy your needs, curiosities and interests. With a heritage of 26 centuries and a commitment to the future, ours is a contemporary, open and welcoming city, an international benchmark in many areas. You will find proof of this as you spend some days with us. Allow me to make some suggestions. When planning your stay in the city, include the classic atractions - Duomo, Galleria Vitorio Emanuele II, Teatro alla Scala, Palazzo

Reale, Navigli and Darsena, Castello Sforzesco, Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper in Santa Maria delle Grazie. Don’t miss our museums, from Galleria d’Arte Moderna to Museo del ‘900, Museo di Scienze Naturali, Museo della Scienza e
della Tecnologia, Brera Picture Gallery and many others. Let yourself be fascinated by the skyscrapers of Porta Nuova and CityLife and go search for unprecedented glimpses of the city as you move away from the centre: each district, with its buildings, shops and meeting points, has its own storythat deserves to be discovered and known. Then I suggest a stop in our parks and green areas, for some physical activity. Finally, make the most of the shopping opportunities in the fashion district and in the neighborhood markets; go to the theatre or to San Siro, join in one of the many musical or sporting events that Milan hosts with pride and enthusiasm. Milan’s vitality will win you over. Thank you for choosing us and come back to visit us soon...!

THE LAND OF TOURISM
TEXT Barbara Mazzali LombardyRegionCouncilorforTourism,TerritorialMarketing,FashionandMajorEvents
Welcome to Lombardy: art, culture, traditions, nature, sports, business and religious travel, food and wine, and excellence in accommodation. This is a heritage given to us by nature, our history, and one which the Lombards have always known how to enhance. If you are in Milan - the world’s Fashion and Design capital and future stage for the 2026 Winter Olympics - of course you should ‘tour it’ and discover every fascinating corner, but remember that Lombardy is so much more than just Milan. Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Cremona, Lecco, Mantua, Lodi, Monza, Pavia, Varese and Sondrio are ‘litle kingdoms’ of cultural uniqueness, landscape and food and wine specialties. In Lombardy you will discover cities of art and enchanting

villages, castles where time has stood still, mountains for skiing or walking, taking in the green and breathing deeply, and lakes that will offer you dreamy views and opportunities for sports. If you wish, you can board boats for ‘slow nature’ tours on our ri-
vers and lakes, where horizons, far from skyscrapers and city buildings, appear even larger. There are experiences to be had from dawn to dusk, and at the end of the day you can enjoy the ‘movida’, that essence in each of our territories that keeps our municipalities ‘alive’ until late in the evening. Lombardy is also a region of renowned national and international importance in the production of DOP, IGP and DOC specialties, with a total of 75 products including wines, cheeses, olive oil, cured meats and sweets, which so atract tourists from all over the world. Adding to the value of all this are the quality and comfortable accommodations, the trained and professional staff who are ready to help you, all set within a framework of efficiency for which we Lombards are famous.

EXPLORING MILAN
Italy’s longest bench is in Milan
Italy’s longest bench was born in Bergamo but is solidly Milanese in character. Created by the design studio Pacchiarini di Onore, the bench is located in the city’s Portello Park and is 208 metres in length. 1,800 four-metre wooden slats, 500 iron legs and some 25,000 screws were needed to build it.
A colossal undertaking that required several trials prior to installation, to check the bench’s robustness and analyse its structural properties. Made in Bergamo and installed in Portello Park in Milan, Italy’s longest bench measures a total of 208 metres.
It was constructed using American wood and highly specialist materials designed to last and treated with water-resistant eco-friendly paint.
UgoRossi CONCIERGE AND EDITOR IN CHIEF MILAN CONCIERGE INFORMATION
The curving line of the bench follows the contours of the park, which was created on the site of the former Alfa Romeo factory by landscape designer Charles Jencks, and surrounds an artificial lake, a combination that adds to the aesthetic appeal of the park itself. In other words… record-breaking Milan never ceases to amaze.

Isola today is synonymous with futuristic skyscrapers and modernity, but ‘old Isola’ is equally fascinating.
I’m thinking of the area around Piazza Sigmund Freud, a stone’s throw from Piazza Gae Aulenti, where you’d go in the post-war years to take the train to Varese (in fact it’s still known as “ex varesina”), and in the 70s and 80s for rides at the funfair; or Corso Como, which runs along the edge of the neighbourhood and is one of the key areas in Milan’s night life, still showing signs of its bohemian past.
The cult British magazine Time Out recently called it one of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods. We’re talking about Isola, and you’ll understand why if you take a walk there.
An area that in the late 19th century was cut offhence the name - from the rest of Milan by the building of the railway is now one of the coolest areas in the city, packed with jazz clubs, hipster bars, vintage stores, artisans’ workshops, specialist bookshops and street art.
A brilliant district that recalls Greenwich Village in New York where all residents know each other and greet one another
Leaving Porta Garibaldi station, we soon come to what has become the district’s architectural icon: the two 19- and 27-storey tower blocks of the Bosco
Verticale, designed by Boeri Studio and overlooking the Biblioteca degli Alberi: ten hectares of gardens with five kilometres of cycle tracks, 135,000 plants, trees, hedges, water plants, climbers and wildflowers. The park is also home to the Casa della Memoria, a red brick building commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Liberation, and the Fondazione Ricardo Catella, which specialises in sustainable urban development. Inside this grand 20th-century building you’ll find Ratanà, whose chef Cesare Batisti recovers and reinterprets traditional Milanese dishes.
Moving on, Via Genova
Thaon di Revel is a genuine concentration of urban life, with Deus Café, linked to the Australian brand of surfoards, bicycles and motorbikes: it’s part bar-restaurant, part

bikers’ store, in a horseshoe-shaped courtyard garden.
At number 4, Milanese mother-and-daughter team Marcella and Cecilia run the small Live In Vintage boutique, ranging from designer pieces to simpler, more affordable accessories.
It’s a place to hunt for small treasures, each with its own story, and a magnet for fans of the pre-loved. True hipsters can’t leave the street without dropping into Bullfrog to get their hair and beard done in an atmosphere reminiscent of a Sicilian barber’s

Then there are the cultural landmarks, such as - still in Via Genova Thaon di Revel - the Fonderia Napoleonica Eugenia, a place of work, art and culture, its grand rooms the site of one of the most important bronze foundries of the age, founded in 1806 and specialising in the production of church bells; or the nearby Church of Santa Maria alla Fontana, with

Or, in Via Medardo Rosso, Micamera, a photo bookstore, exhibition space and workshop that organises events with world-famous writers.
In Isola, like everywhere else in Milan, the aperitif is a ritual. Afer all, it was here that Lombardy’s first gin micro-distillery opened in 2015, named The Botanical Club. Finally, for an evening in perfect Isola style, you can’t beat a jazz club, like Blue Note in Via Borsieri, one of the best-known venues for international jazz and nowadays a classic club with a programme that features acclaimed artists and nightly performances; during the first set you can enjoy an excellent dinner too.

There’s always great expectation for each new edition of Milan Women’s Fashion Week. Things start to warm up in January with the menswear shows: the early indications of the latest trends land on the men’s runway before blossoming in February with the women’s collections. But what’s behind this major event, the crowing glory of Italian fashion in the wider world? Milan is one of the famous Big Four, the four international capitals that host twice-yearly fashion weeks. The first is in September, to present the Spring/Summer collections, and the second is in February, launching the Fall/Winter collections for the following year. The lead time is so long to allow buyers to purchase items and organise the orders for stores in good time.
Along with Milan, New York, London and Paris are the hosts of the key international fashion events, featuring the world’s most celebrated labels and designers.
Even before the advent of the fashion week, the entrepreneur Giovanni Batista Giorgini took inspiration from the success of Eleanor Lambert, founder of New York Fashion Week, and in 1951 he organised runway shows at Villa Torrigiani for several world-renowned Italian labels.
The Florence shows continued until 1982 in the White Room at Palazzo Piti. Following the template of the other fashion capitals and in response to a proposal by the National Chamber for Italian Fashion (CNMI), Milan Fashion Week made its debut in 1958 at the exhibition centre in Via Gatamelata.

Afer Florence, it was Rome that became the hub of Italian fashion: in the postwar capital of Italian film, the ateliers of labels with connections in the industry presented their latest collections to movie stars and the aristocracy.
More than the newly-arrived prêt-à-porter styles, Rome was the home of High Fashion.
In the 70s, thanks to designers such as Walter Albini, Missoni, Krizia and Ken Scot, the centre of fashion shifed to Milan. The first Fashion Week was Milanese through and through.
It was held in 1975 and celebrated the worldwide success of Made in Italy products.
The shows included names that still stand out today: Giorgio Armani, Dolce&Gabbana, Fendi, Alberta Ferreti, Salvatore Ferragamo, Gucci, Max
Mara, Prada and Ermanno Scervino… to name but a few.

tona (Armani Silos), Lodi (Fondazione Prada) and Isola (Fashion Hub), places that boast stunning permanent exhibitions as well as runway shows. This reflects the evolution of the city, which offers buyers, media and tourists multiple interconnected venues to make their stay during Milan Fashion Week even more enjoyable. As we write, Milan Men’s Fashion Week for Fall/ Winter 2024/25 is coming to an end, with 22 physical and 5 digital shows, 39 presentations and 8 special events. A total of 74 happenings which - in the words of CNMI president Carlo Capasa - demonstrate “Italy’s primacy in men’s fashion”. At first glance it’s immediately clear that men’s and women’s collections are increasingly products of the same creative mould. It’s known as co-ed and it’s

nothing new; Giorgio Armani was puting on co-ed shows in the 80s, and Vivienne Westwood’s were legendary at the height of her career. The trend is picked up in Milan by Dsquared2, where designer twins Dean and Dan Caten explore not so much the similarities as the differences between men and women in a textbook show that’s pure joy and sex appeal. Gucci’s male wardrobe encompasses items conventionally associated with women: sparkling undershirts and minidresses, flashy jewellery, slinky shapes… Which brings us back to Westwood’s motto “Buy less, choose well, swap clothes”; following this principle, at MSGM (nearly) everything is interchangeable, and the label’s runway show at Porta Venezia metro station featured a jubilation of sequins and faux fur
collars, alongside glitzy sweaters in pastel colours and shirts/puffer jackets

that are an ode to dressing as joyfully as possible. And while the Fendi menswear collection - as stated by Anna Venturini Fendi - takes inspiration from Princess Anne to present a triumph of tartan, loden, kilts and deluxe waxed jackets fit for the English
countryside, at Prada - as is ofen the case - we’d happily steal something from the male wardrobe, such as purple and acid green colour-blocking, the iconic re-nylon backpack with new-look straps, or a belt that’s part 70s and part futuristic. Dolce&Gabbana’s response to the genderless trend is all about elegance, balance and tailoring. And looking at the lineup on the runways at Paris Fashion Week, which has just started, the trend is also popular with women, who are increasingly dressing in elegant men’s suits. Curious to see what the top Italian designers have in store for you? Make a date in Milan from 20 to 26 February for Milan Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2024. CASA BI
The new emblem of taste in the heart of CityLife
Traditional family cooking. Casa Bi is a new restaurant in Piazza Tre Torri in Milan’s iconic and futuristic CityLife district. It’s a place of great taste and hospitality owned by Vitorio Borgia, the founder of the Bioesserì concept and the Baunilla chain of patisseries, whose aim is to create places where quality, deliciousness and a focus on ingredients are central. The menu evokes all the warmth and goodness of traditional family food, with a mosaic of mediterranean flavours making for a satisfying experience thanks to a balanced combination of fresh ingredients and innovative interpretations.
These include the classics Spagheti with tomato, Chitarrine cacio e pepe, Cotoleta alla milanese, Orecchiete with cime di rapa
and Aubergine parmigiana. And of course there’s pizza, meticulously prepared with stone-ground flour and 72 hours’ natural proving time.
A PLACE OF GREAT TASTE AND HOSPITALITY WHERE THE MENU EVOKES ALL THE GOODNESS OF TRADITIONAL FAMILY FOOD
At Casa Bi you can enjoy exceptional cocktails, the result of intriguing contemporary mixing to produce simple but fresh and colourful combinations. The interior design of
Casa Bi is by Schiavo Architeti Studio in Palermo. The space is divided into three different areas, each with its own character and style. Near the entrance is the boulangerie, which is also an exhibition area.
The garden outside blends harmoniously with the interior, creating a scenic mood that extends to the second area, which features metal elements and red, green and yellow glass: red for lava, green for plants and yellow for the sun. The third area is a spacious dining room and the beating heart of the restaurant. In the centre, a fireplace becomes a symbol of hospitality and conviviality, evoking the ancient tradition of gathering around the fire. Open Monday to Friday from 7.30 am to midnight, Saturday and Sunday from 8.30 am to midnight.

INSTAGRAMMABLE LOCATIONS
If your’s looking to snap some amazing pics in Milan, be sure to check out these colourful spots!
PALAZZO INA
There are many entrances with a recognisable appearance scattered throughout Milan, all designed by some of the most famous architects of the 20th century. But the most instagrammed? The entrance hall of Palazzo Ina by modernist architect Piero Bottoni, who also designed Monte Stella and Qt8. An atrium with Palladian Carrara marble flooring, while the walls are covered with powder pink and cobalt blue tiles: a perfect mix for Instagram.
Corso Sempione, 33
VIA LINCOLN
Low-rise houses, pastel shades, small balconies and flower gardens. The houses in Via Lincoln, a former working-class district now known as the Rainbow district are all painted in different colours. Some even gave it the nickname of Milanese Burano, and it is a sought-after place by those who, in addition to the monuments, want to discover the city’s secret and unusual places.
FONDAZIONE PRADA
The architecture of the museum offers a varied choice of views and panoramas to take a good photo. For example, the Upside Down Mushroom Room: a dreamlike installation by Carsten Höller that enriches the Atlas, the permanent collection of the Fondazione Prada, and attracts the curiosity of many visitors. But also the Bar Luce, designed by film director Wes Anderson: pastel tones, jukebox, pinball machines and a refined vintage atmosphere to feel like being in a film while sipping a cup of coffee.

SPECTACULAR GRAFFITI, PASTEL-COLORED STREETS, GREEN SKYSCRAPERS: JUST WALK AROUND THE CITY AND IT’S EASY TO FIND UNUSUAL AND CURIOUS PLACES
THE COURTYARD OF CASA ROSSI
This building is a great example of eclectic architecture. It was built by Giuseppe Pestagalli in the 1860s and features a Neo-Renaissance façade on the outside. If you stand in the middle of the courtyard open to the public and you look up, you will see how its structure frames a portion of the blue sky in a perfect octagon.
Corso Magenta, 12
ARTLINE
Eggs that stretch out towards the sky, a gigantic hand, and stars on the square floor. These are just three of the art installations found at Artline, the park in the shadow of the skyscrapers of the City Life district, that is enriched every year with new installations. A new life for the old headquarters of the army in Piazza delle Armi, that was used for military exercises until 1923.
Piazza Elsa Morante
VICOLO DEI LAVANDAI
Located along the Navigli, Vicolo dei Lavandai offers a picturesque view of the old Milan. You can see the stream, the canopy still supported by small wooden beams and the old lavoir. The people who came here in the past to wash their clothes were not women, but men, members of a trade association active in Milan since the 18th century. Alzaia Naviglio Grande, 14

BAM
LA BIBLIOTECA
DEGLI ALBERI
A contemporary botanical garden located among the skyscrapers of Porta Nuova with paths that merge with each other forming geometrical patterns, circular forests and flower gardens. The Biblioteca degli Alberi is one of the most representative parks of the new Milan, greener and more sustainable, where you can spend time among nature and attend artistic and cultural events.
BOSCO VERTICALE
The green skyscraper overlooks the BAM - Biblioteca degli Alberi between the districts of Porta Nuova and Isola. It is one of the first examples of a building with a new style architecture based on biodiversity, which pays attention to the relationship between man and other living species. The façade changes its appearance every season: full of flowers in spring, bright green in summer, and with the warm colours of the foliage in autumn.

QUARTIERE ORTICA
An open-air museum, open to the public, free of charge. It is OR.ME Ortica Memoria: 20 works of urban art among the largest in Italy, made by the collective of artists known as OrticaNoodles. Each different mural tells a story about Milan of the 20th century, a route that invites both the Milanese and tourists to leave the city centre to discover a different part of our city.
