When did your passion for surf start? It is a consequence of the love I feel for the sea. I started to get interested in this sport when I was a child. I had some friends that used to go serfing at the Lido, at the Murazzi. You can see us on the beach of the Excelsior hotel, after a coastal storm, especially when Sirocco winds. It has not been that easy at the beginning when it was all about training and lessons, but the satisfaction I got is unexplainable. A secret dream you have? To keep travelling and surfing through the world, discovering kilometers of new beaches. Believe me, for me nothing is comparable to the way you feel when you are riding a wave, when you are in the water. Even an exhausting day spent surfing can make you feel satisfied. Surfing means energy, speed, friendship, freedom, thrill What role does photography has in your life instead? It is a part of my daily life. Sometimes it is difficult to reproduce what you see, but sometimes it is just amazing! Kind of magic. Venice is... So far from the world and time. Still and everlasting. People have to start respecting it. As Jean Coctoeau would say, it is “a Siren that takes down of a swampland in the Adriatic Sea”

Quando è iniziata la passione per il surf? E’ l’apice del mio amore verso il mare. Ero una bambina quando mi sono avvicinata a questo sport. Avevo degli amici che facevano surf al Lido, ai Murazzi. Ma ci potete vedere alla rotonda dell’Excelsior, dopo una mareggiata, specialmente con scirocco. Non è stato facile iniziare questo sport, tra allenamenti e lezioni, è stata dura ma la soddisfazione è tanta. Il suo sogno nel cassetto? Continuare a viaggiare in giro per il mondo con la mia tavola e scoprire chilometri di spiagge. Perché credetemi non c’è sensazione più bella di cavalcare un’onda, di stare in acqua e perfino il sentirsi distrutti dopo una giornata di surf è appagante. Il surf è: dinamismo, velocitò, amicizia, libertà, andrenalina. La fotografia invece che ruolo ha nella sua vita? Mi accompagna da sempre. Riprodurre quello che vedi è a volte impossibile, ma a volte sorprendente! E’ magia. Venezia è... Lontana dal mondo e dal tempo. Immobile e imperitura. Bisogna iniziare a rispettarla. Come direbbe Jean Cocteau è “una sirena che si disfà di una palude dell’Adriatico”.

When did you start to love music? When I was 12 I realized that singing at school recitals was not enough for me, so I decided to take some singing lessons at the school of music of my city. And so it was that what seemed to be just a nice hobby became something much more and increased its importance. What prize was most meaningful to you? All the prizes I have won -all in a different way- have filled me with joy, above all the one of the Coorsal Music Contest of last July at the Mirano Summer Festival. I presented the first two songs I have written by myself (one in collaboration with Antonio Frodella) and I won the first prize in the category representing singer-songwriters. Do you wish your songs will eventually be sung by famous singers? If so, who are these singers? I wish they will be Annalisa or Alexia. Is Venice a source of inspiration for you? Vanice is pure magic. To be immersed in this city that is so inspiring is certainly very motivating for me when it comes to compose my own music.

Quando hai iniziato ad avvicinarti alla musica? A 12 anni ho capito che canticchiare alle recite scolastiche cominciava a starmi un po’ stretto, così decisi di prendere delle lezioni di canto moderno presso la scuola di musica del mio paese. Da lì quello che sembrava essere un grazioso hobby prese la piega di un qualcosa di molto più grosso ed importante. Il premio che hai ricevuto e che ti ha regalato più emozioni, quale è? Tutti, in diversa misura mi hanno dato molta gioia, in particolare il concorso Coorsal Music Contest nel luglio scorso, al Mirano Summer Festival. Ho portato i miei primi due brani scritti e composti da me (uno in collaborazione con Antonio Frodella) e ho vinto il primo premio tra i cantautori. Vorresti che i tuoi testi fossero cantanti da un big? E, se sì, da chi? Mi piacerebbe che tra tutti fossero Annalisa o Alexia. Venezia ti ispira a comporre? E’ pura magia. Essere immersa in questa città ricca di stimoli è sicuramente molto ispirante ai fini delle mie composizioni.

Cosa significa essere una personal shopper? Where does your passion for masks come from? In 1979, when the Venice Carnival exploded again in all its energy, made up of theatre, masks and disguise. What kind of masks do you make? Traditional masks, like those of the commedia dell’arte, jesters, Bacchi, but also a variety of fanciful masks of all kinds. The most exquisite mask you ever made? Probably a theatre-shaped mask, with oil-painted decorations representing Tiepolo’s L’altalena dei Pulcinella. It is true that one of your masks was used in Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut? Tell us how it went. Yes, it was Kubrick’s brother-in-law who discovered us, and who, together with the director of photography, visited our workshop, choosing about thirty masks. The most curious anecdote related to your customers or to their demands? A whopping 500 masks to make in just a couple of days for a party being held in a palazzo. What fascinates you most about the Carnival of Venice? We are fascinated by all of the Carnival, especially the events staged in the streets, where artists can express themselves in a magical setting, where there is no need for special sets or scenery and where our city gives its best.

È vero che una vostra maschera è stata utilizzata nel film Eyes Wide Shut di Kubrick? Ci racconti com’è andata. Più di una. A scoprirci è stato il cognato di Kubrick, che insieme al direttore della fotografia ha fatto visita nel laboratorio, scegliendo una trentina di maschere. L’aneddoto più curioso legato ai vostri clienti o alle loro richieste? Ben 500 maschere da realizzare per una festa in un palazzo in un paio di giorni. Cosa vi affascina di più del Carnevale di Venezia? Ci affascina tutto del Carnevale, soprattutto gli eventi per strada dove artisti possono esprimersi in un contesto magico, dove non servono scenografie speciali e la nostra città dà il meglio di sé.

States, doing in a museum of architecture? The reason is that he more than any other American shaped the face of the new nation through art, architecture and regional planning. Seductions, free-wheeling chatter, the return of old loves, the shadow of solitude, a swimming pool, all set in the enclosed space of an island burnt by the sun: Lampedusa. Son of an actor, Matthias Schoenaerts started acting at the age of seven. But it was in 2012 that the world came to know him, with the film Rust and Bone (De rouille et d’os), in which he played a powerful and intense role alongside Marion Cotillard. His consecration came in 2015: he attended the Venice Film Festival with two films in competition, A Bigger Splash and The Danish Girl. In the same year he was nominated a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in France. A cinema-lover, yet he’s not at all fond of Hollywood chaos and obsession. He still lives in his birth city of Antwerp, where he continues to paint – in fact, he was a teen graffiti artist, who went by the street name Zenith (he can be seen working on Youtube) – and live the life of an ‘almost’ normal person. Among his passions is soccer: he was about to become a professional player with a Belgian team before acting won him over. He remains passionate about the game, its poetry and beauty, as well as for FC Barcelona. ‘When they make a goal after fifty passes, it’s clear how hard they’ve trained to get to that point. And when they make that goal, it’s a unique, truly magical moment. Something similar happens for actors on set’. Matthias, you know some Italian. What is your native language? Flemish. Yet you also act in French and in English… Yes. ‘Parlo un po’ d’italiano: non abbastanza da fare tutta un’intervista, ma ci possiamo provare’, dice Matthias Schoenaerts. E sorride, con quella faccia da ragazzo, trentotto anni di adolescenza luminosa. Lo incontriamo in un locale di Venezia. ‘Venni per la prima volta a Venezia a cinque anni con i miei genitori: è una delle città che amo di più al mondo’, dice. A Venezia dove ha presentato, in concorso, il film A Bigger Splash di Luca Guadagnino. Un quartetto di anime tese come corde di violino. Con lui, Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton e Dakota Johnson. Seduzioni, chiacchiere a ruota libera, vecchi amori che tornano, le ombre della solitudine, una piscina. Intorno, lo spazio chiuso di un’isola scalcinata di sole: Lampedusa. Figlio di un attore, Matthias Schoenaerts ha iniziato a recitare a sette anni. Ma il mondo si è accorto di lui nel 2012, nel film Un sapore di ruggine e di ossa (De rouille et d’os), in cui recitava - in un ruolo potente e terribile - al fianco di Marion Cotillard. Il 2015 è l’anno della sua consacrazione: alla Mostra del cinema di Venezia era presente con due film in concorso, A Bigger Splash e The Danish Girl. E nello stesso anno è stato nominato Cavaliere dell’ordine delle Arti e delle Lettere in Francia. Ama il cinema, ma non il caos e le ossessioni di Hollywood. Vive ancora nella città in cui è nato, Anversa. Dove dipinge - già da ragazzino faceva graffiti con lo pseudonimo Zenith: lo si può ancora vedere, al lavoro, su Youtube - e dove vive la vita di una persona ‘quasi’ normale. Tra le sue passioni, il calcio: stava per diventare giocatore professionista con una squadra belga, poi la recitazione ha vinto. Gli è rimasta la passione per la poesia e la bellezza del gioco del calcio. E per il Barcellona. ‘Quando fanno un gol dopo cinquanta passaggi, è chiaro che si allenano duramente per arrivare a quel momento. Ma quando fanno quel gol, quel momento è unico, assolutamente magico. E accade qualcosa di simile anche per gli attori sul set’. Matthias, qualche parola di italiano. Ma il suo linguaggio nativo qual è? Il fiammingo. Però recita anche in francese e in inglese… Sì: De rouille et d’os, con cui sono arrivato all’attenzione internazionale, era girato in francese, mentre A Bigger Splash era girato in inglese. Il film è sempre teso. Mantiene un’atmosfera di minaccia latente…

Yes, because tension lies in that which is not said. I think what’s not said is always the most interesting part in film, as in life. Truth is not found in what people say, but in what they don’t. And in the way things are said. It’s a matter of energy. All human relationships are more about energy than rationality. What goals would you like to achieve as an actor? I’d like to be able to speak the truth, even when I’m lying (he laughs, editor’s note). That seems like a sly response, and maybe it is. But I would like to create moments of authenticity, which are the best thing any art can achieve. To reconnect with our deepest soul: to rediscover honesty. In any form of art we invest ourselves in, whether film, literature, painting, or music, we must search for the truest expression. I look for moments of truth and authenticity. Of course, without boring the viewer! Where do you usually live? In Antwerp, which is a beautiful city, to great extent a medieval city, about thirty minutes from Brussels. Is living far from Hollywood difficult for an international actor? I find it a blessing. I can jump on an off that ride as I like, without getting sucked into the industry. I enjoy visiting Los Angeles: I go, and then I come back. I like having my own world, separate from cinema. What do you do in your world? I play a lot of sports, paint, visit with friends. I walk around the city, go to the nearby sea, move about. Is there an Italian director whom you admire, or an actor who has inspired you? I would very much like to work with Paolo Sorrentino. As far as actors, I have always admired the iconic types like Mastroianni. What does Italy mean to you? I spoke Italian as a child, and I still understand it a little. I like Italian restaurants, wherever I am in the world. I love the classic pasta with tomato sauce: I’m a minimalist. No need to go crazy with cooking to please me. Favorite actors? In truth, actors haven’t inspired me much. I admire scientists more, and philosophers. If you had not become an actor? I would have liked to be an architect. But I don’t have a mathematical mind; numbers aren’t my strong suit. I really like to design, imagine shapes. But then someone else would have to do the calculations for me! Sì, perché la tensione è in quello che non viene detto. Io penso che ciò che non viene detto sia la parte più interessante, nei film come nella vita. La verità non sta in quello che la gente dice, ma in quello che la gente non dice. E nella maniera in cui si dicono le cose. È una questione di energia. Tutte le relazioni umane sono più un fatto di energia che di razionalità. Che traguardo le piacerebbe raggiungere, come attore? Mi piacerebbe esser capace di dire la verità, anche quando mento! (ride, ndr). Sembra una risposta furba: e forse lo è. Ma vorrei creare quei momenti di autenticità, che sono la cosa migliore che l’arte può fare. Riconnetterci con la nostra anima più profonda: ritrovare l’onestà. In qualsiasi forma di arte investiamo noi stessi, sia il cinema, o la letteratura, o la pittura, o la musica, bisogna ricercare l’espressione più vera. Io cerco momenti di verità e di autenticità. Certo, senza annoiare lo spettatore! Usualmente dove vive? Ad Anversa, che è una città bellissima. Una città in gran parte medievale, a trenta minuti da Bruxelles. Vivere lontano da Hollywood, per un attore internazionale, è difficile? Io la trovo una benedizione. Posso saltare su e giù da quella giostra, e non essere risucchiato dall’industria. Mi piace sentirmi in visita a Los Angeles: vado, poi torno via. Mi piace avere il mio mondo, non appartenere al cinema. Che cosa fa nel suo mondo? Faccio molto sport, dipingo, vedo gli amici. Cammino in città, vado al mare che è vicino. Giro. C’è un regista italiano che ammira, e un attore che la ha ispirato? Mi piacerebbe molto lavorare con Paolo Sorrentino. E tra gli attori, ho sempre ammirato un attore iconico come Mastroianni. L’Italia, per lei, che cosa è? L’italiano è la lingua che parlavo da bambino, e che ancora capisco un po’. Mi piacciono ovunque, nel mondo, i ristoranti italiani. Amo la classica pasta col pomodoro: sono minimalista, non c’è bisogno di impazzire a cucinare per farmi felice. Attori preferiti? In realtà non mi hanno ispirato tanto gli attori. Ammiro di più gli scienziati, i filosofi. Se non avesse fatto l’attore…? Mi sarebbe piaciuto fare l’architetto. Ma non ho una mente matematica, i numeri non sono il mio forte. Mi piace molto disegnare, immaginare forme. Ma poi qualcun altro dovrebbe fare i calcoli per me! E ride ancora, di quel sorriso da ragazzino.

The Carnival of Venice is a unique experience, an enthralling show, a combination of tradition and world firsts, two unforgettable weeks of events and shows and a unique experience for visitors to the city. Carnival 2016: more than one million people with daily peaks of 150,000. 18 days of celebrations and programmes from 23 January to 9 February 2016, from the official opening during the prologue weekend until “Mardi Gras”, which marks the grand finale of this new edition. As in the past, a spectacular theatrical machine called the “Gran Teatro” will be set up in the centre of Piazza San Marco, making it the undisputed hub of the Carnival and the place where the main shows will be performed. And, as happens every year, there will once again be the unique magic of a party that must not just be seen but experienced first hand. tion that starts from Punta della Dogana and sails along the length of the Grand Canal up to the popular Rio di Cannaregio, where they will process accompanied by the rejoicing of the throngs of onlookers on the banks. When the boats arrive the food and wine stands of the Association of Public Business Owners will open, offering cicheti, Venetian specialities and the traditional Carnival desserts par excellence: fritole and galani. Music and animation will accompany the tastings and the arrival of the water parade. On Saturday 30 January there will be the traditional “Festa delle Marie”, a historical procession born from a brilliant idea of the journalist and writer Bruno Tosi. This procession, involving the costumed groups of the C.E.R.S. (European Historical Reenactment Consortium), the Friends of the Venice Carnival Association and the International Association for the Carnival of Venice, goes from San Piero di Castello and winds along Via Garibaldi and the Riva degli Schiavoni in a spectacular parade that ends right on the stage in Piazza San Marco where there is the official public presentation of the Carnival’s crowds. A celebration to commemorate the homage that the Doge paid annually to twelve beautiful and humble Venetian girls, lavishing the doge’s jewels on them for their weddings. And if on Sunday 31 January there is naio è previsto invece il corteo acqueo del Coordinamento Associazioni Remiere Voga alla Veneta che molla gli ormeggi da Punta della Dogana lungo tutto il Canal Grande sino a raggiungere il popolare Rio di Cannaregio, dove sfila in un tripudio di pubblico assiepato sulle rive. Musica e animazioni accompagnano l’arrivo della parata acquea e le degustazioni. Sabato 30 gennaio va in scena la tradizionale “Festa delle Marie”, storico corteo nato da una idea geniale del giornalista e scrittore Bruno Tosi, che coinvolge gruppi storici in costume del C.E.R.S. e le associazioni Amici del Carnevale di Venezia e Associazione Internazionale per il Carnevale di Venezia, che parte da San Piero di Castello e si snoda lungo via Garibaldi e Riva degli Schiavoni in una scenografica sfilata che si conclude proprio sul palco di Piazza San Marco dove avviene la presentazione ufficiale al pubblico del Carnevale. much anticipation for the descent of the Angel of the Carnival from the bell tower, the same can be said of the Flight of the Eagle on Sunday 7 February. The festivities will come to a close on Tuesday 9 February with the crowning of the “Mary of the Year” and the celebration of the “Winged Lion of St. Mark”, the symbol of our city, which is painted on a large canvas and is spectacularly flown over the audience in the square to the bell tower. The cultural programme is also designed to enhance the network of museums, libraries, theatres and concert halls with high-profile indoor events: concerts, readings to music, films and plays. The highlight of the Carnival will once again be the Arsenal, flooded with magic, poetry, music and sensational special effects on the water. These will form music and entertainment itineraries that create a suggestive spectacle recalling the splendours that were organised in honour of King Henry III of Valois, at a time when the fine art of cooking mingled with the luxury of the dishes, not only tickling the palate but also satisfying the eye of diners. A place where the glories of the Venetian Republic, the centre of the known world, echo. Memories of a time when the Arsenal sparkled with statues, decorations and fireworks celebrating the King of France, who was stunned and amazed.

text Federica Repetto photo Manuel Silvestri The history and interesting facts about the most bizarre and sumptuous Carnival parties over the centuries Tra storia e curiosità, le feste di Carnevale più bizzarre e sontuose nel corso dei secoli A subtle euphoria pervades the water arums of the most beautiful city in the world, growing by and by with all the spontaneity of water and recalling lost atmospheres of the past. Everywhere in the Venetian Lagoon, mirrored echoes of Roman Saturnalia festivals and of New Year’s Eve celebrations from the Middle Ages. Yet it was only by the early 15th century that young Venetian gentlemen and nobles created some associations that had the purpose of organizing festivals and shows. They were called the “Compagnie di Calza” (Stocking Groups, T.n.), and they reflected the desire of breaking the common life rules to the point that it became necessary to wear masks, putting on a different face to present to the world. This was the original idea behind the Venetian Carnival, which became this way the perfect interwining of open-air entertainment and theatre, popular feast and culture. People used to wear a sort of black coat called Tabarro, a felt cocked hat called Tricorno, a white or black mask in leather or papier-mâché called Larva or Volto, and the Baùta, a full-size hooded cape in silk, velvet or lace with front opening. So everybody looked the same. The Venetian Carnival was first mentioned in 1094. The first official document declaring the Venetian Carnival a public celebration dates back to 1296. There are really many carnivals that have gone down in history. During the 1571 carnival, at the time of the great battle that involved the Christian naval forces in Lepanto, a parade of allegorical floats was held on Sunday: Faith stamping her foot on a chained-up dragon was followed by the Theological Virtues. In 1664, in occasion of a wedding at Casa Cornaro in San Polo, a nice masquerade sawthe participation of many noble people, who organized a magnificent parade through the whole city stopping over at the famous monastic churches of San Lorenzo and San Zaccaria -where the nuns of noble birth used to stay. On the 27th of February 1679, the Duke of Mantua paraded followed by his retinue of Indians and black, Turkish and Tartarian people, fighting against six monsters that were blocking their path. Una sottile euforia si insinua tra le calli della città più bella del mondo, aumenta con la stessa naturalezza dell’acqua, ricorda atmosfere di tempi andati. Echi di antichi saturnali romani e feste di fine anno echeggiano in laguna fin dal Medioevo. E’ però all’inizio del ‘400 che gentiluomini e patrizi aprono in città circoli di divertimento con lo scopo di creare feste e spettacoli. Si chiamano così le “Compagnie di Calza” che testimoniano la voglia di trasgressione alle regole della vita comune tanto da rendere obbligatorio il mascheramento, ovvero mettere un’altra faccia al posto di quella di tutti i giorni. All’inizio il Carnevale nasce proprio con questo spirito ed diventa il perfetto intreccio tra vita di piazza e teatro, tra festa popolare e cultura. Nell’anonimato garantito da tabarro (il mantello a ruota nero), il tricorno (il copricapo di feltro a tre punte), la maschera bianca o nera, in cuoio o in cartapesta, detta larva o volto, e la baùta, una specie di cappuccio a pellegrina, di seta o velluto o merletto, aperta sul davanti: tutti sono uguali! Si hanno ricordi delle festività del Carnevale di Venezia sin dal 1094. Il documento ufficiale che dichiara il Carnevale una festa pubblica è del 1296. Sono davvero tanti i Carnevali passati alla storia. Quello del 1571, in occasione della grande battaglia delle forze cristiane a Lepanto quando, la domenica di Carnevale viene allestita una sfilata di carri allegorici: la Fede troneggia col piede sopra un drago incatenato ed è seguita dalle Virtù teologali. Nel 1664 durante le nozze in casa Cornaro, a San Polo, si decide di mettere in scena una divertente mascherata a cui partecipano molti patrizi che organizzano una sfarzosa sfilata attraversando la città e facendo tappa nei famosi monasteri di San Lorenzo e di San Zaccaria, è qui che risiedono le monache di nobile stirpe. Il 27 febbraio 1679 il Duca di Mantova sfila con un seguito di indiani, neri, turchi e tartari che, lungo il percorso combattono sei mostri e dopo averli uccisi si aprono le danze.

Charisma is the secret weapon the female star of Casablanca used to win Hollywood over and become the world-famous diva she was meant to be. Elegant, sophisticated and generous, Ingrid Bergman starred in a variety of European and American films and worked with some of the greatest film directors of her time. She was awarded 3 Academy Awards, 4 Golden Globes, 2 David di Donatello prizes and many other nominations and recognitions over her long career. In the year of the 100th anniversary of Ingrid Bergman’s birth (1915 – 2015), celebrations dedicated to the great Swedish actress have been held nearly everywhere: the 2015 Cannes Film Festival was dedicated to recognizing her work and her birthday has been commemorated in many ways across all continents. After so many years since her death (1982), it seems that almost everything about her has been said and written. The memory of the Tribute to Ingrid, held in Venice one year after her death and attended by a number of Hollywood actors she had worked with and loved, is still fresh in people’s hearts. There is, however, an episode of her life that very few know about: when Bergman, in 1977, stayed in Asolo where she was given the Eleonora Duse Prize during the local film festival organized by Flavia Paulon and held in this lovely town near Treviso. On that occasion, Luciana Boccardi, a Venetian journalist and writer, spent a full day in the company of the famous Swedish actress. The memories of this unforgettable encounter have been gathered into a book, published by Supernova Edizioni (Venezia, 2015) on the occasion of Bergman’s 100th birthday, titled Con Ingrid tra colline viola (With Ingrid amid purple 66 Venezia | made in Veneto

Fu proprio il carisma l’arma con la quale la protagonista di Casablanca sedusse Hollywood, diventando una diva indiscussa del grande schermo. Elegante, raffinata, generosa, Ingrid Bergman ha attraversato il mondo cinematografico del nuovo e del vecchio continente recitando per alcuni dei più grandi registi dell’epoca. Ottenne 3 premi Oscar, 4 Golden Globe, 2 David di Donatello e numerose altre nomination e riconoscimenti vari. Nell’anno del centenario della nascita di Ingrid Bergman (1915 – 2015) le celebrazioni dedicate alla grande attrice sono state proposte ovunque: il Festival di Cannes le ha dedicato l’edizione 2015, in America e in tutti i continenti il ricordo della diva “universale” ha suggerito memorie e celebrazioni. A molti anni dalla morte (1982), sembrava che tutto su Ingrid fosse stato detto. Ancora vivo era il ricordo del Tribute to Ingrid organizzato a Venezia ad un anno dalla scomparsa, alla presenza di tanti attori di Hollywood che le erano stati compagni di lavoro e di vita. Esiste tuttavia un episodio che nessuno ancora conosceva: si tratta del soggiorno della Bergman ad Asolo nel 1977, per il “Premio Eleonora Duse”, nell’ambito del Festival del Cinema ideato nel borgo trevigiano da Flavia Paulon. Fu proprio in quell’occasione che Luciana Boccardi, giornalista e scrittrice veneziana, ebbe a trascorrere un’intera giornata con la grande diva. The book was introduced at Palazzo Ducale’s Sala del Piovego, upon the initiative of Venice’s Monuments and Fine Arts Office and Civic Museums Foundation - Palazzo Mocenigo Museum - Studies Center of the History of Fabrics and Costumes. It was a chance encounter that left a lasting impression on Luciana who, in the book, describes also the everyday life and atmosphere of the city of Asolo, which has been often associated with the color purple. The famous Italian poet Giosuè Carducci described it as the city of the “one hundred horizons”. A “slow city”, a capital of culture since the reign of Caterina Cornaro and the cultural circle gathered about her court and led by Pietro Bembo. A meeting and gathering place for artists and intellectuals in the mid-twentieth century, when a stop in Asolo represented a plunge into the city’s artistic, music and literary effervescence and its unique atmosphere, which Henry James was most likely the first to describe as “purple”, the color of dreams, poetry and fleetingness of time, the color that this medieval town makes one immediately think of. The idea of celebrating the launching of the book along with that of a handbag, meant to be a tribute to the great Swedish actress, came to Elisabetta Armellin, a fashion designer who works for V°73, and Luciana Boccardi. The two ladies met by chance in Asolo. For both geographical and cultural reasons, they share a deep bond with the ancient city of Asolo which, in the fifteenth century, was granted by the Republic of Venice to Caterina Cornaro, the former Queen of Cyprus, as compensation for the loss of her island to Venice. The presentation of the book, along with the launching of the INGRID V°73 handbag, will be accompanied by the slogan “Carry a book in your bag”. Luciana Boccardi describes the slogan as a project that could lead to interesting future developments and herself as the “first handbag book author”. At the end of the celebrations for Ingrid Bergman’s 100th birthday, the INGRID V°73 handbag, designed by Elisabetta Armellin and made of precious Vendramin velvet produced by the historic Rubelli maison, will be permanently on show at Palazzo Mocenigo’s Museum of the History of Fabrics and Costumes. 68 Venezia | made in Veneto

Punto d’incontro di artisti e intellettuali nella seconda metà del secolo scorso, quando tra gli anni Cinquanta e Settanta, una sosta ad Asolo rappresentava un bagno di cultura letteraria, artistica e musicale, in quell’atmosfera che, forse per primo, Henry James definì viola, riferendosi alle caratteristiche di questo colore del sogno, della poesia, della fugacità del tempo che il paesaggio di questo borgo medievale trevigiano suggerisce. L’idea di legare il lancio di un libro alla presentazione di una borsa immaginata come oggetto celebrativo come omaggio alla grande attrice, è nata da un incontro “sulla via di Ingrid”, in terra veneta, tra Elisabetta Armellin, oggi stilista per V°73, e Luciana Boccardi. Entrambe legate, vuoi per appartenenza territoriale, vuoi per cittadinanza culturale, ad Asolo, antico borgo che nel XV secolo venne concesso dalla Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia a Caterina Cornaro, regina di Cipro, come regno sostitutivo di quello cipriota che la Serenissima aveva in un certo senso incorporato nel ruolo di dominante. L’autore accogliendo la intenzione di accompagnare la presentazione del volume con quella della borsa “Ingrid V°73” per la proposta “metti in borsa un libro”, ha voluto considerare questo slogan come un progetto che può trovare in futuro sviluppi interessanti autodefinendosi “il primo autore di un libro da borsetta”. Al termine delle celebrazioni del Centenario della nascita di Ingrid Bergman, la borsa “Ingrid V°73”, disegnata da Elisabetta Armellin con velluto “Vendramin” della maison Rubelli, resterà nel Museo del Tessuto e della Storia del Costume di Palazzo Mocenigo.

text Francesca Lombardi Palazzo Fortuny provides a stage for four amazing women, four fascinating characters with a century of art and culture to share In scena a Palazzo Fortuny quattro donne eccezionali, quattro figure charmant che raccontano un secolo d’arte e costume Winter at Palazzo Fortuny this year is an all-women affair: four amazing ladies - Henriette Fortuny, Romaine Brooks, Sarah Moon and Ida Barbarigo - each with a fascinating and singular story to tell, form the subject matter of four exhibitions which will be occupying Palazzo Fortuny this winter. The project was inspired by the desire to honour the “mistress” of the house, Henriette Fortuny, a muse in the true sense of the word, who will take visitors on an exciting journey from the late 19th century through the Belle Époque, into the 1920s then up to modern times, describing the transition into modernity from a women’s perspective. Henriette Fortuny. Portrait of a muse Adèle Henriette Nigrin was born in Fontainebleau in 1877 and met Mariano Fortuny in Paris in the early 1900s. He was already a well-known artist. The scarce biographical information available tells us little else, but for certain, we do know that, from 1902, Henriette was by Fortuny’s side for some 47 years, playing a deciding role in the success of the extraordinary textiles he designed. In their home workshop, Henriette worked by her husband’s side in the production of fine printed textiles and silk lamps, coordinating the many craftspeople who worked with them and taking charge of delicate relations with an increasingly wide and international customer base. For this exhibition, a number of amateur films made by Mariano in the 1930s will be shown for the first time ever, having been restored with the help of fashion house Louis Vuitton. Romaine Brooks - paintings, drawings, photographs The exhibition, the first ever to be dedicated in Italy to American artist Romaine Brooks, reveals the decadently sophisticated and cosmopolitan life style that flourished in the most refined of cultural circles - from Paris to Capri and Venice during the Belle Époque: Jean Cocteau, Paul Morand, Luisa Casati, Ida Rubinstein and Gabriele d’Annunzio are just some of the people who had the privilege of being immortalized by the artist, famous for her subdued palette of greys. L’inverno a Palazzo Fortuny è declinato al femminile: quattro straordinarie personalità - Henriette Fortuny, Romaine Brooks, Sarah Moon e Ida Barbarigo - con le loro “storie” singolari ed affascinanti, sono al centro di altrettante mostre che occuperanno gli spazi di Palazzo Fortuny durante la stagione invernale. Il progetto nasce per rendere omaggio alla “padrona di casa” Henriette Fortuny, vera e propria “musa” che saprà condurre il visitatore intenso “viaggio” che, partendo dalla fine dell’Ottocento, attraversa la Belle Époque e gli anni Venti del secolo, per giungere fino ai giorni nostri, raccontando la declinazione al femminile della modernità. Henriette Fortuny. Ritratto di una musa Adèle Henriette Nigrin nasce a Fontainebleau nel 1877 e agli inizi del ‘900, a Parigi, incontra Mariano Fortuny. Lui è un artista già noto. Le scarne notizie biografiche non ci raccontano altro, ma certo è che dal 1902, per ben 47 anni, Henriette sarà al fianco di Fortuny, contribuendo in misura determinante al successo delle sue straordinarie creazioni tessili. Nella casa laboratorio Henriette affianca il marito nella produzione dei pregiati tessuti stampati e delle lampade in seta, coordinando le numerose maestranze che con loro collaborano e facendosi carico dei delicati rapporti con una committenza sempre più numerosa e internazionale. In occasione della mostra per la prima volta saranno inoltre visibili al pubblico alcuni filmati amatoriali girati da Mariano negli anni Trenta, restaurati con il contributo della Maison Vuitton. An unconventional look at post-war art at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice Alla Collezione Peggy Guggenheim di Venezia un percorso non convenzionale nell’arte del Dopoguerra The Peggy Guggenheim Foundation aims to present a detailed and renewed interpretation of American and European art from post world-war II to 1979 in the new exhibition entitled Postwar Era: una storia recente. Rarely ever shown, these pieces have been grouped together by theme, style or common origin, then along a less traditional chronology in order to portray a time in history and art that transcends movements and trends. Eleven exhibition rooms holding unexpected treasures: the journey starts with the early products of abstract Expressionism and the works, therefore, of Willem de Kooning, William Baziotes, Robert Motherwell and Richard Pousette-Dart. It continues with a room dedicated to an American artist of Polish origin: Jack Tworkov (1900-1982). A reflection about the female figure as a source of abstract-expressionist inspiration for the Polish artist. This tribute celebrates the donation made by Jack Tworkov’s estate to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 2013 of the Portrait of Z. Sharkey (1948). The story continues, highlighting the effect this transatlantic, informal abstraction had on art in Europe, as seen in the research of matter, gesture and symbol by Italian artists, the likes of Afro, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Pietro Consagra, Bice Lazzari, Giuseppe Santomaso, Toti Scialoja, and Emilio Vedova. A selection of British post-WWII works documents Peggy’s passion for sculpture. One of the more lasting impressions that will remain with visitors to the museum is undoubtedly that of the metal and glass gate that welcomes them on arrival. Peggy commissioned the gate in 1960 from Claire Falkenstein (1908-1997), a versatile American sculptor, and it is now a permanent exhibit at the Venice museum. We met Stefano Contini at his art gallery in Venice at a very important time in his personal and professional life: plans for his children, including the opening of a new gallery in London in New Bond Street, professional achievements, the many encounters that changed his life and still infect him with enthusiasm and energy. 65 years old and a 40-year-long career: two very important goals. Is it time for taking stock of your life? No, I don’t think so. I’ve really had so much from life: a job that I love more every day, people I am fond of and who support me, a lot of friends. I have traveled, experimented with, loved, been successful. The only thing I hope for is to carry on doing what I am now and hand all this down to the one among my children who wishes to pursue this career. Could you tell us about your professional history? I was barely 23 when I landed a job in Venice as Rizzoli’s sales manager for the Veneto region. In 1976, I was offered another position, in the Rizzoli Finarte department, which involved dealing in works of art. In 1977, I quit the job and started my own art gallery. I had already two children at the time and a successful career ahead of me. But it’s a matter of passions: you simply have to follow them sometimes. Just like when I moved from Tuscany to Venice: I had completed my studies and I had a promising career in the company my father worked for. It was a very reliable company, but I couldn’t stand the idea of a life behind a desk, stuck within four walls and I left. But I am still a Tuscan at heart. I see myself as a privileged “expat” living in Venice. Let me tell you something: my first art gallery only dealt in Tuscan artists, from Lucca, to be precise, including two first-rate artists such as Riccardo Benvenuti and Gianpaolo Bianchi. How important is beauty to you when it comes to choose a work of art, as both art gallery owner and collector? It is crucial. Beauty is an objective quality, a social and cultural matter. First of all, I have to be intrigued by the artist’s work from a merely hedonistic point of view. Then comes the artist’s message. Abbiamo incontrato Stefano Contini nella sua galleria di Venezia in un momento importante a livello professionale personale: i progetti con i figli, tra cui la galleria a Londra nella prestigiosa New Bond Street, le soddisfazioni professionali, gli incontri che hanno segnato la sua vita gli danno entusiasmo e energia. 65 anni e 40 anni di attività: due traguardi importanti. Tempo di bilanci? Ma direi di no. Dalla vita ho avuto tantissimo: una lavoro che mi piace ogni giorno di più, persone che amo e mi sostengono, tanti amici… Ho viaggiato, sperimentato, amato, avuto successo. Non chiedo altro che continuare così e passare tutto questo a chi dei miei figli ha scelto o sceglierà questo lavoro. Ci racconta il suo percorso professionale? Sono arrivato a Venezia a poco più di 23 anni, come direttore commerciale per il Veneto della Rizzoli. Nel ’76, mi hanno dato un altro incarico dirigenziale nella sezione Rizzoli Finarte, che si occupava di commercio di opere d’arte. Nel ’77 ho lasciato tutto e aperto una galleria mia. Avevo già due figli, e una carriera sicura e importante davanti. Ma è una questioni di passioni: bisogna semplicemente seguirle, a volte. Come quando ho lasciato la Toscana per trasferirmi a Venezia: avevo fatto studi scientifici e una impiego sicuro dietro una scrivania nella azienda dove lavorava mio padre. Era un’ottima azienda, ma vedermi rinchiuso in 4 mura… non riuscivo a farmene una ragione e sono partito! Ma la Toscana me la porto sempre dentro. Mi considero un esiliato di lusso a Venezia. Le racconto una cosa: nella mia prima galleria trattavo solo artisti toscani, lucchesi per l’esattezza. Tra questi due fuoriclasse: Riccardo Benvenuti e Gianpaolo Bianchi. Quanto è importante il bello nelle sue scelte, sia a livello professionale che come collezionista? Fondamentale. Il bello è una cosa oggettiva, una questione sociale e culturale. Prima di tutto il lavoro di un’artista deve piacermi a livello puramente edonistico. Poi è importante il messaggio, quello che l’artista racconta di sé e del mondo con la sua opera. El Greco, Ultima cena In occasion of the 400th anniversary of this artist’s death, Treviso pays a homage to El Greco -real name Dominikos Theotokopoulos - one of the greatest artists of the 16th century. Until the 10th of April, Casa dei Carraresi hosts an exhibition of around thirty works by this genial precursor of modern painting -many of which have never been showcased in Italy- as well as masterpieces of great artists that have influenced his art or have been influenced by his art, like Tiziano, Picasso, Parmigianino, Bacon. This is the most important retrospective exhibition ever organized before on this artist’s young work: El Greco in Italy, Metamorphosis Of A Genius, dedicated to the years the painter spent in Italy (between 1567 and 1576). An experience that deeply changed his art, since he evolved from an Orthodox icon painter to a revolutionary artist, inspiring famous artists like Cézanne, Manet, Pollock and many others. The exhibition is divided into four sections: the first part presents a video that tells about the artist, with all the anecdotes related to his charismatic personality; the second part is dedicated to Crete, the island where he was born, and to the Byzantine-styled language that characterized his first works; in the third section, both the masterpieces produced in Italy and the works by those artists he met during his journey from Venice to Rome. Among the masterpieces exhibited: St. Francis Receiving The Sigmata by Titian, the Madonna di San Zaccaria by the Parmigianino, The Allegory Of The Battle Of Lepanto by Veronese and the Allegory Of Fire by Bassano. In the final section also works by Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon which reveal the way El Greco has influenced the major representatives of the avantgarde movements of the 20th century, also showing how the use of acid colors, the ascensional movement of the characters represented, the amazing psychological representation of his figures in his portraits, the shafts of lights in the dark that are typical of the art of El Greco have undoubtedly been fascinating for many artists, both in the past and in in the present.

In occasione del quarto centenario dalla scomparsa dell’artista, Treviso rende omaggio a uno dei più grandi pittori del ‘500, Dominikos Theotokopoulos, detto El Greco. Esposte fino al 10 aprile a Casa dei Carraresi una trentina di opere di questo geniale precursore, molte delle quali mai mostrate prima in Italia, accompagnate da altrettanti capolavori dei grandi che influenzarono il suo lavoro, o ne furono a loro volta influenzati, da Tiziano a Picasso, da Parmigianino a Bacon. La più importante retrospettiva mai organizzata prima sul periodo giovanile dell’artista, intitolata El Greco in Italia. Metamorfosi di un Genio, dedicata agli anni che il pittore trascorse nel Bel Paese (il decennio dal 1567 al 1576). Un viaggio che lo plasmò profondamente, trasformandolo da iconografo del mondo ortodosso a genio visionario che ha ispirato maestri del calibro di Cézanne, Manet, Pollock e molti altri. Il percorso espositivo è suddiviso in 4 sezioni: nella prima parte, un video racconta l’artista e gli aneddoti legati alla sua personalità carismatica; la seconda parte è dedicata a Creta, l’isola in cui è nato e al linguaggio della tradizionale icona bizantina che ha contraddistinto i suoi primi lavori; la terza parte mette a confronto le principali opere del periodo italiano con quelle degli artisti che incontrò nel suo viaggio da Venezia a Roma. Tra i capolavori: il San Francesco Riceve le Stimmate di Tiziano, la Madonna di San Zaccaria del Parmigianino, l’Allegoria della Battaglia di Lepanto del Veronese e l’Allegoria del Fuoco del Bassano. Nella sezione finale opere di Pablo Picasso e Francis Bacon mostrano le influenze che El Greco ha esercitato sugli esponenti delle avanguardie del ‘900, rivelando inequivocabilmente come i colori acidi, il movimento ascensionale delle figure, l’impressionante rappresentazione psicologica dei ritratti, gli sprazzi di luce rubati alle tenebre tipici de El Greco abbiano incantato e continuino a incantare molti celebri artisti.

A shady story of sadism, self-interest and drugs in twentieth-century Venice Una pagina torbida tra sadismo, calcolo e droga nella Venezia del Novecento Tarnowska became the name of a hat. A style similar to the Boldini, black with an enormous brim and a veil, mysterious accomplice that covered the face. The hat was a furious success for the first half of the 20th century and was named for an aristocratic Russian countess, Maria Nicolajevna Tarnowska, who entered the anthology of famous personalities for a crime in which she had the role of leading lady and for which she was sentenced after a trial that was talked about for decades in articles and books around the world, not only in Venice where the wicked deed took place. In the first years of the 20th century, Venice was experiencing a golden age. The rich and the opportunists flocked to the city on the lagoon, together with poets, high-class merchants, aristocrats, men and women looking for a “good situation” even in warm alcoves. There was a Russian countess among the notable personalities. She was Maria Nikolajewna Tarnovska, née O’Rourke from an Irish father and married to count Wassily Tarnowsky who introduced her to a free and dissolute life and taught her the independence of sex from common morality. This was a game of acting that lovely Maria interpreted heartily to the extreme, falling in love with a young doctor who was an addict. With her lover, she offered her husband private views of love scenes that the count secretly observed from another room. But, the young doctor died and left her a legacy of addition to cocaine. The marriage did not last long. Maria, separated from count Tarnowsky and searching for financial support to conduct her life of luxury, landed in Venice. After settling into Hotel Danieli and Hotel des Bains at the Lido, the countess immediately began to look around with the assistance of a fellow countryman, the lawyer Demian Prilukov, who became her lover. He was open to every betrayal of the provocative Maria and ready to plan them together. The occasion came soon enough with the acquaintance of count Pavel Kamarovskij, a Russian ready to fall into the trap of the enchantress. He fell so hopelessly in love that he decided to abandon his family to dedicate himself to the aristocratic green-eyed lady, going so far as to promise marriage. “Tarnowska” divenne il nome di un cappello. Di quelli alla Boldini, nero con ala immensa dalla quale scendeva sul viso, complice e misteriosa, la veletta. Il cappello furoreggiò nel primo mezzo secolo del ‘900 e prese il nome da un’aristocratica contessa russa: Maria Nicolajevna Tarnowska, entrata nell’antologia dei personaggi famosi per un delitto che la vide attrice principale e condannata dopo un processo del quale si parlò e si continuò a parlare per decenni con articoli e libri usciti in tutto il mondo, non solo a Venezia dove avvenne il “fattaccio”. Nei primi anni del Novecento Venezia viveva un suo periodo d’oro: nella città lagunare approdavano ricchi e avventurieri, poeti e mercanti d’alto bordo, aristocratici, uomini e donne in cerca di “sistemazione economica” anche presso alcove accoglienti. Tra i personaggi di spicco una contessa russa: Maria Nikolajewna Tarnovska, nata O’Rourke da padre irlandese e sposata al conte Wassily Tarnowsky, che la avviò ad una vita libera e dissoluta, insegnandole l’indipendenza del sesso dalla morale corrente. Un gioco delle parti che la bella Maria interpretò fino in fondo innamorandosi di un giovane medico tossicomane con il quale poteva offrire al marito scene d’amore en privè, che il conte seguiva furtivamente da un’altra stanza. Ma il giovane medico morì, e le lasciò in eredità la suddidanza alla cocaina. Il matrimonio non durò molto. Maria, separata dal conte Tarnowsky e in cerca di fornitura finanziaria per condurre la sua vita lussuosa, sbarca a Venezia. Sistematasi tra l’Hotel Danieli e il Des Bains del Lido, la contessa inizia subito la sua ricerca, aiutata da un connazionale, l’avvocato Demian Prilukov, che divenne l’amante aperto ad ogni “tradimento” della procace Maria, possibilmente da concordare insieme. L’occasione non tardò a presentarsi con la conoscenza del conte Pavel Kamarovskij, russo, pronto a cadere nella trappola della maliarda della quale s’innamorò perdutamente, tanto da decidere di abbandonare la famiglia per dedicarsi alla nobildonna dagli occhi verdi, fino a prometterle il matrimonio. On 5 September 1907, with a 5-column headline, Il Gazzettino announced, Mysterious murder of count Kamarowsky. Political conspiracy or crime of passion? Conspiracy, audacity, and mystery: all exquisitely Russian things enveloping the tragedy. The facts reported that at dawn of the same morning, the young Nicolaj Naumov, another Russian victim of the siren of the lagoon, rang the bell at the Maurogonato palace and rushed toward the count’s room. The resistance of the maid was useless. She knew that young visitor to the house because of multiple encounters with the countess. Nicolaj. exhausted by use of drugs, demanded increasingly extreme relations. As soon as he came face to face with count Kamarovskij, he exploded two pistol shots to his heart and then escaped toward Canal Grande and the train station. Naumov was arrested in Vicenza. He confessed immediately to the plan drafted by Maria and her lover Prilukov, explaining that the countess had promised to fly with him to their homeland, Russia, rich thanks to the count’s insurance policy, while his award was to be an erotic slide on the snow: nude, towed by a sleigh and beaten with great ferocity by the countess holding a special laminated whip that she reserved for special occasions. The Russian trial in Venice was the event of the century. A line of persons of all ages and conditions waited every morning in front of the Court of Rialto to see the countess as she alighted from the superb gondola with her wide-brimmed hat and fur boa. Tall and certain of her allure, lady Tarnowska never glanced at the crowd as she walked proudly toward the court where the judges, jurors, lawyers awaited her with the guards, who were also susceptible to her charm. Neither did the judges, lawyers and jurors evade her seductive power. The chief prosecutor, Giorgio Garzoni, grabbed her and shouted, “You belong to me, I must have you”. One of the defence team, Mr Calzini, a sober married man with three children did not hesitate to declare to her, “For your love I am ready to abandon everyone and everything”. The relatively light sentence (8 years of imprisonment) for Maria Tarnowska was considered the consequence of the fatal green ray of her eyes. Prilukov was sentenced to 10 years, while the principal in the first degree, Nicolaj Naumov, was found to be mentally ill and was sentenced to 3 years and 4 months. After prison, Maria Tarnowska moved to Argentina under a false name. She died at sixty-two years of age in Buenos Aires on 23 January 1949. 116 Venezia | made in Veneto

Il complotto, l’audacia, il mistero, tutte cose squisitamente russe avvolgono la tragedia. I fatti raccontavano che quella mattina all’alba il giovane russo Nicolaj Naumov, una delle ultime conquiste della “mantide“ in Laguna, suona il campanello di Palazzo Maurogonato e si precipita verso la stanza del conte. Vane le resistenze della domestica che pure conosceva quel giovane frequentatore della casa per incontri multipli con la contessa alla quale Nicolaj, stremato dall’uso di droghe, chiedeva rapporti sempre più estremi. Appena è di fronte al conte Kamarovskij gli esplode due colpi di pistola al cuore fuggendo verso il Canal Grande e la stazione. Naumov venne arrestato a Vicenza. Confessò subito il piano architettato da Maria e dal suo amante Prilukov precisando che la promessa della contessa era una fuga con lui nella patria Russia, arricchiti dalla polizza del conte, mentre il premio sarebbe stato una “scivolata“ erotica sulla neve: nudo, trascinato da una slitta e colpito con la più gradita ferocia dalla contessa con una speciale frusta laminata che riservava agli incontri speciali. Il “processo dei Russi” a Venezia fu l’avvenimento del secolo. Una coda di persone di ogni età e condizione sostava ogni mattina davanti al Tribunale di Rialto per vedere la contessa mentre scendeva dalla gondola elegantissima, con il cappello ad ala immensa, il boa di pelliccia. Alta e sicura del suo fascino la Tarnowska non degnava di uno sguardo la folla e procedeva con un incedere altero verso il Tribunale dove l’aspettavano giudici, giurati, avvocati e guardie, anch’esse sensibili al suo charme. Non si sottrassero al suo potere seduttivo giudici, avvocati e giurati: il Procuratore di Stato Giorgio Garzoni la afferrò e gridò: “Tu mi appartieni, voglio averti”. Quanto all’avvocato Calzini, uno dei difensori, uomo sobrio, sposato, con tre figli, non esitò a dichiararle “Per il tuo amore sono pronto ad abbandonare tutti e tutto”. La condanna relativamente mite per Maria Tarnowska (8 anni di carcere) fu ritenuta una conseguenza del “raggio verde” fatale dei suoi occhi. 10 anni per Prilukov mentre l’esecutore materiale, Nicolaj Naumov, ritenuto infermo di mente, fu condannato a 3 anni e 4 mesi. Maria Tarnowska dopo il carcere si trasferì sotto falso nome in Argentina. Morì a Buenos Aires, sessantaduenne, il 23 gennaio 1949.
