You are an accomplished costume designer but when did your passion for corsets begin? I studied set design and costume history at the Accademia in Venice in 1999, then I open my first workshop to make costumes for the theater, the cinema and the Venice Carnival. However, I immediately developed an almost morbid interest in corsets and consequently also the desire to make this item of underwear into a unique, independent and personal accessory. What makes your creations unique? For the last 17 years I have been making and elaborating unusual corsets with new materials for every occasion. I like designing and experimenting with new forms that make the facial features of the wearer more balanced. How much have Venice’s excellent products still to be exploited? Craftsmanship has always supported a high level of quality and our excellent produce must continue to stand out, involving young people so as not to lose the high ranking acquired. What is Venice for you? Venice, as well as being my hometown, is the main source of inspiration for my creations.

Lei è una affermata costumista ma la passione per i corsetti quando è iniziata? Ho studiato scenografia e storia del costume all’Accademia di Venezia nel 1999, successivamente ho aperto il mio primo laboratorio per realizzare costumi per il teatro, il cinema ed il Carnevale di Venezia. Da subito però ho iniziato a nutrire un interesse quasi morboso per il corsetto e così anche il desiderio di rendere questo capo intimo un accessorio indipendente unico e personale. Quale è la particolarità delle sue creazioni? Da 17 anni realizzo ed elaboro con materiali nuovi e insoliti corsetti per ogni occasione. Mi piace disegnare ed esperimento forme nuove per rendere armoniose i lineamenti di chi lo indossa. L’eccellenza veneziana quanto deve essere ancora valorizzata? La qualità artigianale ha da sempre sostenuto un posto elevato e la nostra eccellenza deve continuare a distinguersi, coinvolgendo anche i giovani così da non perdere mai l’alta posizione acquisita. Cosa è per lei Venezia? Venezia, oltre ad essere la mia città natia, è la fonte principale d’ispirazione per le mie creazioni.

When were you introduced to this art? I discovered leather working and the numerous possibilities it offered for use in the 1980’s, but putting myself on the line to create new products has always been my passion. Il Grifone is an artisan shop, a rarity for Venice. When the occasion to rent it came up, the shop that has been my workshop for more than 30 years now, I didn’t let it slip away. I don’t feel like a rarity although it is true that in the old part of the city, unfortunately, there are only a few artisan workshops remaining. Where do the exclusive hides of your products come from? I buy the leather in Tuscany. I get the other softer, natural grain colored napa leather in Veneto, in the Arzignano district. How important is creativity in your trade? You have to invent new styles all the time that will appeal to the customers’ taste. They are always looking for new materials, forms and colors. What do you dream of for Venice? Beautiful things take time to be appreciated and in Venice the right time is a slow time.

Quando ha iniziato ad avvicinarsi a questa professione? Negli anni ‘80 ho scoperto la lavorazione del cuoio e le molteplici possibilità del suo utilizzo ma il mettermi alla prova e creare prodotti nuovi è sempre stata la mia passione. Il Grifone è una bottega artigianale, una rarità per Venezia. Quando mi si è presentata l’occasione di prendere in affitto, quella che ormai da più di trent’anni è la mia bottega, non me la sono fatta sfuggire. Non mi sento una rarità anche se effettivamente di botteghe artigiane in centro storico, purtroppo, ne sono rimaste poche. Da dove provengono le esclusive pelli dei suoi prodotti? Acquisto il cuoio in Toscana mentre le morbide e colorate pelli bovine a pieno fiore le prendo in Veneto dal distretto di Arzignano. Quanto è importante la creatività nel suo mestiere? Bisogna inventare sempre modelli nuovi e che incontrano i gusti della clientela, sono sempre alla ricerca di nuovi materiali, forme e colori. Cosa sogna per Venezia? Le cose belle richiedono il giusto tempo per essere assaporate e a Venezia il giusto tempo è: un tempo lento.

Elena, how would you define yourself: an artist or an entrepreneur? Both require creativity, imagination, dedication and professionalism. What role does body painting have in your life? It’s an art that feels natural and instinctive to me. There are creative insights that still surprise me by provoking strong emotions and incredible experiences. Your greatest satisfaction? There are many because each time I involve my entire being. Among them, without a doubt, the collective artistic performances in Piazza San Marco, with the enthusiastic participation of a thousand Venetians, who have a special place in my heart. “A Rose for Venice” became an extraordinary event. The idea of reinterpreting a millennial tradition of my city in a contemporary way, through the active participation of its citizens and a high-impact image, got the right international attention. What is your idea of how Venice should be? It is an island full of life, a forge of possibilities under every aspect, a start-up of itself and of every citizen of Venice, of Italy and the world who want to bet honestly on mankind’s new challenges.

Elena come si definirebbe: artista o imprenditrice? Entrambe prevedono creatività, fantasia, dedizione e professionalità. Che ruolo ha nella sua vita il bodypainting? E’ un’arte che mi viene naturale e istintiva. Si tratta di intuizioni creative che mi sorprendono ancora oggi regalandomi emozioni fortissime ed esperienze incredibili. La sua più grande soddisfazione? Sono tante in quanto ogni volta coinvolgono tutta me stessa. Sicuramente però le performance artistiche collettive realizzate in Piazza San Marco, con la partecipazione entusiastica di mille veneziani, hanno un posto speciale nel mio cuore. “Una rosa per Venezia” si è trasformato in uno straordinario happening. L’idea di reinterpretare una tradizione millenaria della mia città in chiave contemporanea, tramite la partecipazione attiva dei suoi cittadini e una immagine di grande impatto, ha ottenuto la giusta attenzione internazionale. La sua idea di Venezia? E’ un’ isola piena di vita, fucina di possibilità su ogni aspetto, start-up di se stessa e di ogni cittadino di Venezia, d’Italia e del mondo che voglia puntare con onestà su nuove sfide dell’essere umano.

Where can we meet you? From nine in the morning until sunset, you’ll find me at the foot of the bridge linking the Old Ghetto to the piazza of the New Ghetto. How did your passion for rowing begin? Rowing is the most natural thing to do in Venice. It’s the sport of the city and, at the same time, the best way to discover the city. When I started rowing, I would never have imagined I would become a sculler but now that I’m in it, I would never give it up. What itinerary do you suggest on board your scull? I propose a nice trip of an hour, preferably at sunset, touching the Cannaregio, Santa Croce and San Polo districts. What is the target of the “Voga in Rosa” [Row in pink] project? It is a website created for those who love Venetian rowing. It tells the stories of the regattas of women champions and their most important races. What do you love about Venice? I love its diversity that is both welcoming and hostile at the same time. Even though it is an extremely artificial environment, it takes people to a dimension of human relations that is much closer to man’s real nature.

Chiara Curto. Born and raised in Genoa where she did all kinds of sports, she came to Venice almost 20 years ago to study Japanese at the university. Dove la possiamo incontrare? Dalle nove del mattino fino al tramonto ai piedi del ponte che collega il Ghetto Vecchio al campo del Ghetto Nuovo. Come è iniziata la sua passione per il remo? La voga è la cosa più naturale da fare a Venezia, è lo sport della città e allo stesso tempo il modo migliore per scoprirla. Quando ho iniziato a vogare non avrei mai pensato di fare la sandolista ma ora che ci sono dentro non mollo più. Quale itinerario ci consiglia a bordo del suo sandolo? Propongo un bel giro di un’ora, preferibilmente al tramonto, sfiorando i sestieri di Cannaregio, Santa Croce e San Polo. A chi si rivolge il progetto “Voga in Rosa”? E’ un sito creato per gli appassionati di voga veneta. Racconta le regate delle campionesse e le gare più importanti. Cosa ama di Venezia? Mi piace la sua diversità che accoglie e respinge allo stesso tempo, pur essendo un ambiente estremamente artificiale indirizza le persone verso una dimensione relazionale più vicina alla natura dell’uomo.

text Federica Repetto How did your passion for art begin? As a Venetian, I breathed art since I was a child. In addition, it runs in the family. I opened my first gallery in 1991 in collaboration with Davide Samuelli, then continued on my own from 2000. What type of art do you propose in your gallery? Now, we focus above all on contemporary art but, right from the start, I have always made an effort to make space for Venetian artists, from Emilio Vedova to Mario de Luigi, and Pizzinato, whose archive I have. In 2004, I also began to show photography. At this time, we are exhibiting Empire of Light by Luca Campigotto and we recently closed an exhibition called Restricted Areas by the Russian photographer, Danila Tkachenko, which was a great success. Who purchases your art? By now, local collectors have practically disappeared and 95% of our customers are foreigners so our proposals meet international preferences. We do a lot of work with Americans, but also Russians and Europeans. Who is the leading artist of your gallery? At this time, the gallery has a very “pop” profile and the artist enjoying the greatest success is the South African, Gavin Rein, for whom we have the worldwide exclusive.

Massimiliano Bugno, owner of the Bugno Art Gallery, has been a point of reference for contemporary art in the city for over twenty years. Facing the splendid Campo San Fantin, it has recently expanded into a large adjacent space now dedicated to the world of photography Come nasce la sua passione per l’arte?

Da veneziano l’arte la respiri sin da bambino, per di più io sono “figlio d’arte”. Nel 1991 apro la mia prima galleria in collaborazione con Davide Samuelli, per poi continuare da solo dal 2000. Che tipo di arte propone nella sua galleria? Ora proponiamo soprattutto arte contemporanea, ma fin dagli esordi ho sempre cercato di dare molto spazio ad artisti veneziani, da Emilio Vedova a Mario de Luigi, fino a Pizzinato di cui posseggo anche l’archivio. Dal 2004 ho aperto anche alla fotografia; in questo momento stiamo esponendo Empire of Light di Luca Campigotto e abbiamo da poco chiuso una mostra di grandissimo successo del fotografo russo Danila Tkachenko Restricted Areas. Chi acquista la sua arte? Ormai il collezionismo locale è purtroppo quasi scomparso, la nostra clientela è per il 95% straniera, pertanto anche la nostra offerta si è adattata ai gusti internazionali. Lavoriamo molto con gli americani, ma anche russi ed europei. L’artista di punta della sua galleria? In questo momento la galleria ha un taglio molto “pop” e l’artista che sta riscuotendo più successo è il sudafricano Gavin Rein, di cui abbiamo l’esclusiva mondiale.

text Giovanna Caprioglio How did Micromega take shape? I come from a family of Venetian opticians and for many years, I followed my father’s path. After a while, I became convinced that there was room for something more innovative and I began to study the matter until, in 1990, I developed a patented solution that I sold to Luxottica. That patent already contained the seed of the Micromega concept: weightlessness, resistance and flexibility. However, it was only in 2000 that I registered the basic Micromega model and launched this project that still excites me today. What makes your glasses different? First of all, the fact that they are practically unique pieces. Those on view in our single brand shop are just prototypes. Each customer can decide to mix materials and styles because each pair of glasses is handmade to order. In the second place, they are practically indestructible, incredibly lightweight and uniquely flexible. Who are your favorite customers? Our glasses are loved above all by personalities in the world of art and show business. They appreciate the originality and exclusivity. In addition to Elton John, who has bought about 90 pairs from us, other regular customers include Yoko Ono, Emma Thompson, Norman Foster... The most expensive style? The “hands” model where we added a little ring with a ruby on one of the fingers (each lens has the form of a hand): 2,900 euro, just like the models in gold wire and bone.

Come nasce Micromega? Vengo da una famiglia di ottici veneziani e per molti anni ho seguito la strada di mio padre, poi però mi sono convinto che ci fosse spazio per qualcosa di più innovativo e ho iniziato a “studiare” fino a elaborare nel 1990 un brevetto che vendetti a Luxottica. The exhibition, directed by Alejandro Aravena, forms a unique event at the Main Pavilion (Giardini) to the Arsenale, including 88 participants from 37 countries. Of these, 50 are exhibiting for the first time, and 33 of the architects are under 40. Let us begin with the Civic Museums. At the Correr Museum until 20 November: Ippolito Caffi 1809 - 1866. Between Venice and the Orient. One hundred fifty years after the death of Ippolito Caffi and annexation of Venice and the Veneto region to Italy, a major exhibition celebrates the most innovative landscape painter of the 19th century, who was also a visionary and a patriot. For the first time in fifty years, the entire collection of over 150 paintings donated to the city by his widow will be on view. Organized to mark the one hundred fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Ghetto of Venice, Venice, The Jews and Europe 1516-2016 at Palazzo Ducale describes the processes that led to the concept, implementation and transformation of the first enclosure for Jews in the world. At the same time, the view opens to include the relations established with the rest of the city and with other Jewish neighborhoods (among others) in Italy and Europe, focusing on the abundance of relations between Jews and Venice, Jews and civil society, during the various periods of their long residence on the lagoon, in Veneto and the broader European and Mediterranean contexts. The intent, in fact, is to encourage greater awareness of the diverse cultures that existed in cosmopolitan Venice at the beginning of the 16th century, and the intermingling of doctrines, knowledge and uses that still constitute a major asset of the territory. Al Museo Correr fino al 20 novembre Ippolito Caffi 1809 – 1866 Tra Venezia e l’Oriente: a 150 anni dalla morte di Ippolito Caffi e dall’annessione di Venezia e del Veneto all’Italia, una grande mostra celebra il più innovativo vedutista dell’Ottocento, visionario e patriota. Per la prima volta dopo cinquant’anni, esposto per intero il fondo di oltre 150 dipinti donato dalla vedova alla città. Organizzata in occasione del cinquecentenario dell’istituzione del Ghetto di Venezia, la mostra Venezia, gli ebrei e l’Europa 1516 – 2016 a Palazzo Ducale intende descrivere i processi che sono alla base della nascita, della realizzazione e delle trasformazioni del primo “recinto” al mondo destinato agli ebrei. Allo stesso tempo lo sguardo si allarga, abbracciando le relazioni stabilite con il resto della città e con altri quartieri ebraici (e non solo) italiani ed europei, a sottolineare la ricchezza dei rapporti tra gli ebrei e Venezia e tra gli ebrei e la società civile, nei diversi periodi della loro lunga permanenza in laguna, in area veneta e in area europea e mediterranea. Ippolito Caffi 1809 – 1866. Between Venice and the Orient at Museo Correr On view until 10 October at Palazzo Fortuny, Quand fondra la neige, ou ira le blanc. Contemporary collecting at Palazzo Fortuny. With a title suggested by a work of Rémy Zaugg, the articulated project conceived by Daniela Ferretti comes to life. It intends to trace the profile of some of the most important personalities among contemporary collectors and, consequently, to investigate how the figure of the collector has evolved from the Renaissance to our time.It is a theme of great moment and the first protagonist is Enea Righi, an entrepreneur of Bologna who, in thirty years of activity, motivated by the will to support artistic production, formed one of the most important collections of contemporary art present in Italy. Two exhibitions at Ca’ Pesaro. Lino Selvatico. A new Belle Époque will be open until 31 July. The exhibition begins with the best-known subjects of the painter, born in Padua in 1872 and died in Biancade (Treviso) in 1924, meaning his female portraits and some of his masterpieces conserved in the Ca’ Pesaro collections such as Cappuccetto grigio of 1903, Ritratto della contessa Annina Morosini of 1908 and Madre e figlio At the heart of the retrospective, there are 25 works that retrace the artistic career of Selvatico. It is a limited but prestigious selection, that focuses on the themes and prevailing interests of the artist. Following a detailed itinerary through the three sections – Woman, Family and Model – which retrace precisely the themes explored by Selvatico during his long and prolific artistic career, the exposition is also a unique occasion

Un tema di grande attualità, che vede come primo protagonista Enea Righi, imprenditore bolognese che in trent’anni – guidato dalla volontà di sostenere la produzione artistica – ha plasmato una delle più importanti collezioni d’arte contemporanea presenti nel nostro paese. The exhibition, curated by Jean-Louis Froment with the collaboration of Gabriella Belli, has been produced with the support of Chanel. From the debut of the first of the Culture Chanel series in 2007, it has been presented as a “collection of exhibitions” because each individual event is part of a single project, conceived and elaborated by Jean-Louis Froment, who is the artistic director. With the choice of a different theme each time, Culture Chanel takes on the singular story of Gabrielle Chanel and of Maison Chanel. Two exhibitions also by the Pinault Foundation. At Palazzo Grassi the Sigmar Polke exhibition will be open until 6 November. It is the first great personal exhibition dedicated to the German artist Sigmar Polke (1941-2010) in Italy. The exhibition retraces the entire career of the artist from the 1960’s to the new millennium, and the great variety of techniques he employed. A Palazzo Grassi la mostra Sigmar Polke ( fino al 6 novembre): la prima grande mostra personale in Italia dedicata all’artista tedesco Sigmar Polke (1941-2010). From ancient to contemporary art, the thousand universes on display this summer in Venice

terpretation of Italian art in the 60s: this is the objective attained by IMAGINE. New Imagery in Italian Art 1960-1969, curated by Luca Massimo Barbero, at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection until 19 September. The theme of the image is the red thread of the path that starts by analyzing the birth of a movement in Italian art that has attracted less attention and notoriety: the step beyond monochrome. The first section is dedicated to experiments with cancelling and masking reality, with the Filtri [Filters] and Metalli by Lo Savio, the Monocromi by Schifano, the Schermi [Screens] by Mauri, and their dialogue with Angeli’s strong veiled images between the political and the heraldic. The next step is the birth of a new type of image, which looks at art history and almost creates a new mythology. The “metaphysics of daily life” take shape in the two rooms dedicated to Schifano. Next, a whole room is dedicated to the universe of Gnoli and his very personal lenticular images. At the center of the exhibition itinerary, there is a moment of coexistence between the image and the camera. This passage includes the world of cinema and media of Rotella (Posso? [May I?] 1963-65) and Schifano. The clash with the conceptual image by Paolini, or with objects intended to have an active/performing part, such as Mappamondo [Globe] (1966-1968) by Pistoletto, was almost inevitable. The image then became an object and surpassed the simple representation in the last rooms with the works of Pascali. lettura dell’arte italiana degli anni ’60: è questo l’intento raggiunto della mostra IMAGINE. Si parte con una sezione dedicata alle indagini di cancellazione e schermatura della realtà con i Filtri e i Metalli di Lo Savio, i Monocromi di Schifano, gli Schermi di Mauri, in dialogo con le forti immagini velate tra il politico e l’araldico di Angeli. Si passa poi alla nascita di una nuova tipologia di immagine, guarda alla storia dell’arte quasi creando una nuova mitologia. La “metafisica del quotidiano” prende corpo nelle due sale dedicate a Schifano. Si entra poi nell’universo di Gnoli, alle cui particolarissime immagini lenticolari è dedicata un’intera sala. Centrale all’interno del percorso espositivo è un momento di convivenza tra immagine e mezzo fotografico: fanno parte di questo passaggio, il mondo del cinema e dei media di Rotella (Posso? 1963-65) e Schifano. Lo scontro è quasi inevitabile con l’immagine concettuale di Paolini o con gli oggetti, destinati ad avere parte attiva-performante, quali il Mappamondo (19661968) di Pistoletto. L’immagine diventa quindi oggetto e supera la semplice rappresentazione nelle ultime sale con le opere di Pascali.

Venice and Verona are the protagonists of this summer season in the Veneto region. Here are the appointments you won’t want to miss at the two main music festivals in the Veneto region. ESTATE FENICE These two words are the signpost for the intense summer program at the La Fenice Theater in Venice, full of appointments from 27 June to 7 August, ranging from the baroque to music of today. On the first of July the festival, subtitled Lo spirito della musica di Venezia 2016 [The spirit of the music of Venice 2016], will present the premiere of Mirandolina, a charming hybrid of opéra-comique, Singspiel and operetta by the Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů, who took his inspiration for this title in 1959 from Goldoni’s Locandiera. A light touch, witty dialogues and a trace of melancholy are the strong points of a work that has been enjoying a fruitful period of revival over the last decade. ESTATE FENICE Due parole per definire l’intensa programmazione estiva del Teatro veneziano, ricca di appuntamenti dal 27 giugno al 7 agosto che spaziano dal barocco alla musica di oggi. Debutta il 1° luglio per il festival Lo spirito della musica di Venezia 2016 Mirandolina, delizioso ibrido tra opéra-comique, Singspiel ed operetta del compositore ceco Bohuslav Martinû che per questo titolo del 1959 si ispirò alla Locandiera di Goldoni. Toni leggeri, dialoghi frizzanti ed una vena di malinconia sono i punti di forza di un lavoro che nell’ultimo decennio sta vivendo un fruttuoso periodo di riscoperta. La Chiesa Anglicana di San Giorgio accoglie due appuntamenti dedicati alla musica barocca: l’1 e 3 luglio, il concerto Vivaldi, Vivaldi Vivaldi! di Venetia Antiqua con la partecipazione del soprano Liesl Odenweller, una selezione dai concerti e arie per soprano del compositore veneziano Antonio Vivaldi. Every year in Venice the “Festival of the Redeemer” or Il Redentòr comes to life. In the past, working class and noble families came together on Giudecca to eat, drink and celebrate this festival all night long. The city commemorated itself with a ritual that has been the same since July 21, 1578. It is the anniversary of the end of the plague that struck the lagoon, reaping over 50 thousand victims at the rate of one hundred per day. On that occasion the Doge Alvise Mocenigo and the Senate of the Serenissima decided to give a mandate to Andrea Palladio to design and build a church to pay homage to the Redeemer, so that the Venetians could attend every year, and always remember the epidemic. To make it possible to go to the island of Giudecca, more than 80 galleys were aligned to support the bridge over which the Doge and the Great Schools solemnly brought devotion and gratitude for the past fear to the temple. Since then, a pontoon bridge is created between the banks of the Zattere and Giudecca, right in front of the church so that political authorities, the clergy and pilgrims can march in procession to church of Il Redentore (the celebrations include a solemn function chaired by the Patriarch and the religious procession). As every year, the workers are busy building the votive bridge of boats as they have done for more than 400 years. It is the passage that allows the giudecchini to cross the canal on foot feeling less isolated thanks to the 333.70 meter floating bridge, specially lit by more than a hundred lamps. The Feast of the Redeemer is an absolute must and the same is true for the fireworks display that lights up the Palazzo Ducale, San Giorgio and columns of Marco and Todaro, a thousand lights and extraordinary colors. The festivities begin at sunset with the arrival of thousands of illuminated boats decorated with balloons, in the San Marco Basin and the Giudecca Canal. A Venezia prende vita ogni anno la “sagra del Redentore” o Il Redentòr, dove un tempo famiglie intere del popolo e della nobiltà e gruppi di amici si trovavano alla Giudecca a mangiare, bere e fare festa, per tutta la notte. La città commemora sé stessa attraverso un rito che è sempre uguale dal 21 luglio del 1578, è la ricorrenza che celebra la fine della peste che colpì la laguna mietendo oltre 50mila vittime al ritmo di cento al giorno. Come ogni anno gli operai si danno da fare per costruire il ponte votivo di barche che viene ininterrottamente creato da più di 400 anni ed è il passaggio che permette ai giudecchini di attraversare il canale a piedi sentendosi meno isolati grazie al ponte galleggiante che vanta una lunghezza di 333,70 metri e che è appositamente illuminato da oltre un centinaio di lampade. Il via libera ai cittadini è previsto per le 19 di sabato 16 luglio, prima dei consueti Foghi, dalle 23.30 a mezzanotte, in bacino a San Marco. La Festa del Redentore è insomma un must assolutamente da non perdere e così dicasi per lo spettacolo pirotecnico che rischiara Palazzo Ducale, San Giorgio e le colonne di Marco e Todaro, tra mille luci e fantastici colori. I festeggiamenti hanno inizio al tramonto con l’arrivo di migliaia di imbarcazioni illuminate e decorate con tanti palloncini che prendono posto nel bacino di San Marco e nel canale della Giudecca. “So it was written in the book of fate, on my page, that the year 1786, on the evening of September 28th, at five o’clock according to our clock, I saw Venice for the first time entering the Lagoon from Brenta; and that shortly after I touched on this multitude and visited this wonderful city of islands, this republic of beavers. Thus, for me, thank the gods, Venice is no longer simply a word, an empty name, like those that so often tormented me of all people, mortal enemy of empty words”. These are the words of Goethe on his arrival in the lagoon. Venice was built to be reached from the sea, a privilege of the few who arrive in pleasure crafts or the many who come through on cruise ships. Pietro Mariutti, architect, yachtsman and Commander at sea hosted us aboard his elegant pleasure motor yacht, Silver Victory, bought in 2004 but built in 1961 by the famous Scottish shipyard James A. Silvers and designed by John Bain. Why did you decide to buy Silver Victory? I was always fascinated by the classic yachts, their elegance but above all by their leisurely speed. This kind of boat has many similarities to sailboats, where the pleasure is not so much in arriving as it is in actually sailing. It is always distinguished by its very slow gentle way of gliding through our waters, despite having quite big but less powerful Gardner engines, practically eternal, built to last! It’s an incredible concentration of naval engineering that is well suited to a seaside city like ours. And for the rest, it has the most unique mooring in the world. It’s in one of the most evocative locations, just a few meters from the gardens of San Giorgio Island and the Cipriani on Giudecca Island. Queste le parole di Goethe al suo arrivo in laguna. Venezia è stata costruita per essere raggiunta dal mare, privilegio dei pochi che la raggiungono con navigli da diporto o dei molti che arrivano grazie alle nave di crociera. Pietro Mariutti, architetto, velista e comandante de mar ci ha ospitato a bordo del suo elegante pleasure motor yacht, Silver Victory, acquistato nel 2004 ma costruito nel 1961 dal noto cantiere scozzese James A. Silvers e progettato da John Bain. Come mai ha deciso di acquistare Silver Victory? Sono sempre rimasto affascinato dalle barche d’epoca, dalla loro eleganza ma soprattutto dalla loro andatura. E’ una imbarcazione che ha molte affinità con le barche a vela, il cui piacere non è arrivare ma navigare, si contraddistingue da sempre mentre scivola dolcemente sulle nostre acque per il suo trend decisamente lento, pur avendo motori Gardner molto grossi ma poco potenti, praticamente eterni, per durare nel tempo! Si tratta di un incredibile concentrato di marineria che si adatta benissimo in una città di mare come la nostra. E del resto l’ormeggio non ha eguali al mondo. Si trova in una delle postazioni più suggestive, a pochi metri dai giardini dell’isola di San Giorgio e dal Cipriani alla Giudecca. Poco distante invece lo yachting club più esclusivo d’Italia che tra i suoi soci annove-

E’ una imbarcazione che piace molto anche ai miei amici stranieri - tra cui la recente visita di un barone inglese - che mi vengono a trovare in laguna e con i quali amo trascorrere del tempo mostrando loro la bellezza delle nostre isole. Quale itinerario ci suggerisce comandante? Costeggerei la parte sud della Giudecca che alcuni hanno definito anche la “piccola Manchester” e che ha avuto un periodo di splendore con la costruzione di palazzi, ville con orti, chiese e conventi. Nel secolo scorso la Giudecca era un sobborgo popolare della città con sede di alcune medie industrie quali la Junghans (un tempo si fabbricavano orologi mentre oggi ospita al suo interno il piccolo ma attivo Teatro Junghans) e molti piccoli cantieri navali. Staying on the northern side of Giudecca we come to the Fortuny fabrics factory, which uses the machinery designed by its founder for its artistic productions; then there is Canottieri Giudecca, the company that organizes Venetian rowing courses, boating and sailing. There are also important churches located along the shore, such as Sant’Eufemia with its wonderful Renaissance paintings, il Redentore which was built to celebrate the city’s liberation from a terrible plague, one of the most sensational examples of Palladian sacred architecture, and the church of the Zitelle, so named because in the adjacent convent was a school for poor girls. For over twenty years I had a company that worked with geographical information systems, meaning digital maps associated with relational databases. Perhaps because I have a passion for the sea, but also numbers, I decided to design a chart of the Venice lagoon that could be of help to anyone arriving for the first time in the historical center with their own boat. Rimanendo sempre lato Giudecca nord possiamo incontrare la Fabbrica di Tessuti Fortuny, che usa per le sue produzioni artistiche i macchinari progettati dal suo fondatore; la Canottieri Giudecca, società che organizza corsi di voga alla veneta, canottaggio e vela al terzo. Ci sono anche importanti chiese che si trovano lungo la riva, è il caso di Sant’Eufemia con i suoi mirabili dipinti di epoca rinascimentale, del Redentore per celebrare la liberazione della città da una terribile pestilenza e uno dei più sensazionali esempi di architettura sacra palladiana e, la chiesa delle Zitelle, chiamata così perché nel convento adiacente esisteva un istituto per ragazze povere. E poi? Arrivati in punta della Salute ci inebriamo di entusiasmo ammirando il bacino di San Marco, apoteosi della grandezza della città, lasciamo alle nostre spalle l’isola di San Giorgio con il suo campanile, navighiamo lungo il canale dell’Orfano per giungere all’isola di San Servolo e scorgere le isole di Poveglia e Santo Spirito. Non deve essere semplice navigare senza una buona carta nautica. Per oltre vent’anni ho avuto una azienda che si è occupata di sistemi informativi geografici, mi riferisco alla cartografia numerica associata a database relazionali. Forse perché nell’animo appassionato di mare ma anche di numeri ho deciso di progettare una carta della laguna di Venezia che può essere di aiuto a tutti coloro che per la prima volta arrivano in centro storico con la propria imbarcazione.

Temptations Tentazioni The show at Ca’ Vendramin Calergi is the leading summer event in the lagoon Resident show a Ca’ Vendramin Calergi è lo spettacolo di punta dell’estate in laguna Temptations, at Ca’ Vendramin Calergi, has enchanted the audience with a show that has united fine cuisine accompanied by a renewed selection of wines, presented by expert sommeliers, for an innovative and intriguing display characterized by a non-stop rhythm, with performers always on the move. The numerous performances of the crew have brought the show alive, alternating sensual musical moments and fascinating dance exhibitions. The numerous costumes that distinguish the individual performances contribute to making the virtuoso artists’ exhibitions even more unique and scenographic. Back in Italy from January of this year, after the success in St. Barth, Temptations was the inaugural show at the Carnival of Venice 2016. A veritable artistic exploit by the creative, Gabriele Rizzi, it is one of the most audacious and elegant representations ever staged by Nu’Art Events. Now the show is in residence at the Ca’ Vendramin Calergi, a Renaissance palace among the most prestigious in Venice, also endowed with a splendid garden on the Grand Canal. Designed by the brilliant architect Mauro Codussi, and, according to sources, already finished in 1509, Ca’ Vendramin Calergi was the residence of one of the most influential aristocratic families of the city and is still a representative monument for Venice. The upcoming appointments for Temptations, which will involve about 50 individuals including the artistic cast, the kitchen and reception teams, are programmed for 24 June, 9 and 23 July, 6 August and 1 September. Lo show Tentazioni ha incantato il pubblico di Ca’ Vendramin Calergi con uno spettacolo che unisce i piaceri della cucina, affiancati a una rinnovata selezione di vini presentati da esperti sommelier, a uno show innovativo e intrigante caratterizzato dall’assenza di pause con performer sempre in movimento. Le numerose performance della crew hanno dato vita a uno spettacolo che ha alternato sensuali momenti musicali e affascinanti esibizioni di ballo. I numerosi costumi di scena che hanno contraddistinto le singole performance hanno contributo a rendere ancora più scenografiche e uniche le esibizioni degli artisti. Al Nair III, Cochy Bondhu, Auriga, AL Nair IV, Katama, Palaia Tyche, Shaula, Chica Boba II, Levantades II, Silvica, Agos, Capriccio, Bina II, Gilla, Strale and Serenity competed last weekend in June for the “Fourth Trophy of the Principality of Monaco, Vintage sailboats in the lagoon, Banca Generali Special Cup” next to the picturesque sailboats in the waters of the San Marco basin. The pearl of the Adriatic welcomed this extraordinary sporting event at the St. Helena Marina, strongly supported by Anna Licia Balzan, Honorary Consul of Monaco in Venice. The technical side of the regatta was organized by Mirko Sguario, a sector professional, founder of the Venice Yacht Club and creator of famous regattas. It was held in the waters off the Lido di Venezia. Thanks to A.I.V.E., a reference point for those, in Italy and abroad, who maintain wooden or metal boats built in the years prior to 1975, ship owners have responded enthusiastically to the invitation to these two regattas, sailing in the Basin of San Marco, and two cocktail parties, one for ship owners and their crews, and the other exclusively for ship owners in unique and prestigious settings like Ca’ Sagredo and Ca’ Vendramin Calergi. “The fourth edition of the Trophy and event continue to grow,” said Anna Licia Balzan, “and this year we have been able to count on the support of renowned companies who believe in this project’s potential. La perla dell’Adriatico ha accolto, presso la Marina di Sant’Elena, questa straordinaria manifestazione sportiva, fortemente voluta da Anna Licia Balzan, Console Onorario del Principato di Monaco a Venezia. La competizione per la parte tecnica di regata è stata organizzata da Mirko Sguario, professionista del settore, fondatore dello Yacht Club Venezia ed ideatore di celebri regate, e si è tenuta nelle acque antistanti il Lido di Venezia. Truman Capote, the American writer, once said of Venice: “It’s like eating a whole box of liquor-filled chocolates in a single sitting. It will stun you.” There are some restaurants in the city that amplify this sensation, enrapturing the palate while overlooking breathtaking panoramas that, especially at sunset, seem to transport you directly into the masterpieces of color and light of the paintings by Canaletto, Bellotto and Guardi. The most exclusive are on the terraces of the grand hotels such as Gritti Palace, Grand Hotel Bauer, Hotel Europa & Regina and Hotel Monaco. Among them, on the top floor and thus with an even more commanding position in the city, is the Terrazza Danieli restaurant, in the legendary hotel of the same name, offering its guests one of the most spectacular views of Venice. Overlooking the lagoon, the panorama sweeps from the isle of St. George to the point of the Dogana and beyond, embracing the islands of the lagoon. It extends between the ports of Malamocco and Lido, separating the Lagoon of Venice from the Adriatic Sea. Many have fallen in love with this strip of land on the sea. Lord Byron, who fled England on account of his political anti-conformism and scandalous life, fell under its spell. He used to swim from the Grand Canal to the Lido then visit the ancient Jewish cemetery, the perfect place for his romantic spirit. But Percy Bysshe Shelley, George Sand, Alfred de Musset and Henry James were also bewitched by the beauty of this island. Hippolyte Taine, French historian and philosopher, left us this description: “You reach the island on a ferry in one hour. It is a long sandbank that protects Venice from the real sea. The center is occupied by a church and its village. All around there are parks and vegetable gardens. A lane flanked by ancient trees opens on the left, trees that come back to life when spring begins. Three-hundred steps ahead is the great sea. Percy Bysshe Shelley, George Sand, Alfred de Musset and Henry James were bewitched by the beauty of this island Germans and British, dandies from every continent, all enchanted by this small beach paradise, haven of the most secret vices and unmentionable pleasures. A process of urban renewal also began. Villas and cottages in the neo-Gothic, neo-Byzantine and Art Nouveau styles were built, but the defining feature was ensured by its grand hotels: Hotel Des Bains and Hotel Excelsior. In 1912 Thomas Mann in “Death in Venice” used the Hotel Des Bains and the Alberoni beach as the setting for the writer Gustav Von Ascenbach’s heart-rending passion for young Tadzio. The beach of the Des Bains presents itself as an extremely elegant place. Its cabins covered by the characteristic straw roofs - the only ones of this kind that can be seen along this part of the seaside - give the entire area a distinctly original and relaxed appearance. No less noble is the history of the Excelsior, located directly on the seafront. It is a masterpiece of Venetian art from the early 20th century. In neo-Moorish style, its domes seem made of gold at sunset and silver in the moonlight. They have been the backdrop of romantic novels and the perfect setting for films such as “Once Upon a Time in America”. It was in the Sala degli Stucchi of this renowned hotel that Sergio Leone chose to shoot the legendary scene in which Robert De Niro dances with Elizabeth McGovern. Thousands of vacationers flock to the island’s beautiful beaches, where they can swim in safety thanks to the protection of the breakwaters of San Nicolò and Alberoni and the many others that extend from the shore of each beach facility out to sea. The Lido’s claim to fame is its fine golden sand and calm crystal-clear waters, while the main characteristic of its beaches is the capanna, a large cabin with an awing-covered deck. There are many beach facilities and all offer amenities such as cabins of varying sizes, beach chairs, loungers and beach umbrellas, which may be rented on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, or for the entire season. There are also public beaches such as the sand dunes of San Nicolò and Alberoni, the rocky beach of Murazzi and the beach of the Bluemoon – conveniently located near the Santa Maria Elisabetta vaporetto pier, but often crowded with tourists. The beach of Alberoni is instead a WWF oasis. Its semi-natural environment offers the perfect habitat to a variety of sea birds, such as the rare bee eater and Kentish plover and the more common little egret (a heron) and sea gull. It is a nature reserve of great beauty and naturalistic importance which changes shape according to the seasons and is the ideal place to visit for those who wish to explore the natural environment and biodiversity of this very special coastal area. le bellissime spiagge - è una delle mete tra l’altro preferite dai veneziani - che consentono di bagnarsi in tranquillità grazie anche alla protezione delle due dighe di S. Gli stabilimenti sono molti e tutti danno la opportunità di affittare le diverse attrezzature: capanna, mini capanna, capannino con sdraio, ombrellone e lettino, per diversi periodi (giorno, settimana, mese o stagione intera). Ci sono anche aree di spiaggia libera come le dune sabbiose di San Nicolò e degli Alberoni, gli scogli dei Murazzi e la spiaggia del Bluemoon - strategicamente vicina alla fermata del vaporetto di Santa Maria Elisabetta - spesso però affollata di turisti. Quella degli Alberoni è invece un’oasi protetta dal WWF molto suggestiva e per il suo carattere semiselvaggio, ideale habitat per diversi uccelli marini, tra cui i rari gruccioni e fratini oltre ai più comuni garzette e gabbiani. E’ una riserva naturale di grande bellezza e importanza naturalistica, che ogni anno muta le sue forme in base ai cicli stagionali e che si presenta come un luogo ideale da visitare per chi desidera scoprire la natura e la biodiversità di questa speciale zona marittima.
