I was born in Beijing and grew up there. I lived there until I was 22. To a little girl, the city meant home, school and all the familiar narrow streets. For the past four years, as a traveler, I began to miss Beijing badly and wanted to know more about the city. And now, through COLORS, I have finally had the chance to pass again and again through the city, to explore its corners and secrets, and to chat with people whom I only passed by before, by chance.

Maybe only when you leave a place can you feel its true essence.

Sono nata e cresciuta a Pechino, dove ho vissuto fino all’età di 22 anni. Agli occhi di una bambina, la città si riassumeva tutta nella casa di famiglia, la scuola e il dedalo di viuzze e vicoli del quartiere.

Negli ultimi quattro anni che ho passato in viaggio, lontano da Pechino, ho cominciato a sentire una gran nostalgia per la mia città e questo mi ha fatto venir voglia di conoscerla meglio. Oggi, grazie a COLORS, ho avuto finalmente la possibilità di battere in lungo e in largo la mia città, di esplorarne ogni angolo e ogni segreto, e di parlare con tante persone cui prima non facevo neanche caso, quando c’incrociavamo. Chissà, forse è soltanto dopo aver lasciato un luogo che siamo in grado di coglierne la vera essenza.

I was born in a small city in the southern part of China. The first song I learned as a child was about Beijing’s Tian An Men Square.

Like other kids I longed to see the capital and had endless fantasies about it based on textbooks, radio and TV. I never had an actual relationship with the city until 1996, when I went to Beijing for the first time. I thought it was the greatest experience I had ever had! Now, to me Beijing is just the city of my girlfriend’s family.

Sono nato in una cittadina del sud della Cina. La prima canzone che ho imparato da piccolo parlava della piazza Tien An Men e, come tutti i bambini, sognavo di visitare Pechino. Per me la capitale era un luogo mitico, su cui potevo fantasticare per ore, ripensando ai libri, alla radio e alle immagini della televisione. E questo nonostante non avessi mai avuto contatti diretti con la città fino al 1996, quando visitai per la prima volta Pechino. All’epoca fu l’esperienza più esaltante della mia vita! Oggi, per me, Pechino è la città dove vive la famiglia della mia ragazza.

Alle elementari stavo in una classe avanti alla sua. Eravamo cresciuti nello stesso quartiere. Era carinissima. Somigliava a una famosa cantante di Taiwan. Ci lasciammo alla fine della scuola media, non a causa di un litigio, ma perché la mia famiglia si trasferiva dall’altra parte della città. Ho sentito che oggi lavora per la filiale pechinese della Lufthansa, e che da poco si è messa insieme a un tedesco.

Avevo altri due buoni amici alle medie: Hai Qing e Song Tao. Eravamo compagni di classe e vicini di casa. Stavamo sempre insieme, anche quando facevamo a botte con altre bande di ragazzini.

Una volta avevo venduto un preziosissimo francobollo dell’anno della scimmia, che avevo sottratto di nascosto dalla collezione di famiglia. Dopo, con i soldi, avevo comprato tre coltelli, tre pistole giocattolo e tre paia di occhiali da sole per noi tre. Eravamo così fieri. Ci davamo un sacco di arie, atteggiandoci come i banditi dei film di Hong Kong. A scuola nascondevamo i coltelli e le pistole sotto una stufa che stava in corridoio. Tanto nessuno la toccava, quando era finito l’inverno.

Un po’ di tempo dopo, durante una rissa con un’altra banda di ragazzini, Song Tao tagliò il naso a uno di loro. Fortunatamente la situazione si sistemò. Ma da allora smettemmo di giocare con quei coltelli.

Dopo il diploma ci perdemmo di vista. Ho saputo che Song Tao ha accoltellato un tipo in una rissa, e che si è beccato 9 anni di galera. Una condanna troppo dura, ma all’epoca il governo aveva lanciato una campagna che si chiamava “Pene severe contro l’illegalità”. Insomma, il colmo della sfiga. Ormai dovrebbe essere uscito di prigione, ma non ho neanche provato a rintracciarlo. Mi farebbe piacere vederlo, ma allo stesso tempo avrei anche paura.

Abbiamo vissuto esperienze molto diverse in tutti questi anni, e siamo cambiati molto, non c’è dubbio. Alcune cose ormai non esistono più dai tempi della nostra amicizia, e questo ci renderebbe ancora più tristi.

La scorsa estate è successa una cosa strana. Un giorno ho notato che mio padre stava tagliando l’anguria con uno di quei coltelli. Chissà dove era andato a pescarlo. Ho cominciato a sudare freddo.

She was in the grade below me in school. We grew up in the same neighborhood. She was very pretty and looked like a popular singer from Taiwan. When we separated after graduating from junior middle school it wasn’t because of any conflict, it was because my family moved to the other side of the city. I heard she is now working for Lufthansa’s Beijing office and has recently found a German boyfriend.

I had two other good friends in junior middle school: Hai Qing and Song Tao. We were classmates and our families lived near each other. We were together all the time, including when we’d fight with other groups of boys.

I once sold a very precious monkey stamp that I had secretly taken from my family’s collection. I used the money to buy three knives, three toy pistols, and three pairs of sunglasses for the three of us. We were very proud and felt like one of the gangs from a Hong Kong movie. We hid the knives and pistols under a stove in the school corridor. Nobody bothered about the stove once winter was over.

Some time later, when the three of us were fighting with another group of boys, Song Tao hacked a boy’s nose with one of those knives. Luckily the situation settled itself. But we never played with those knives after that.

The three of us lost touch gradually after graduation. I heard that Song Tao stabbed someone in a fight and was sent to jail for nine years. The sentence seems much too heavy, but it happened to be during a government campaign called “Severe Punishment for Illegalities.” He was not lucky at all. He should be out of jail now, but I haven’t tried to contact him. It’d be nice to see him, but it also scares me. Surely we’ve experienced very different things and have changed considerably in these years. Some things must have disappeared since then, and that could make us really sad.

A strange thing happened one day last summer: I noticed my father was cutting watermelons with one of those knives. I couldn’t understand where he found it. I felt an instant cold sweat. 十二

Un tempo Pechino era piena di piscine all’aperto. Ormai questa è l’unica rimasta. E oggi è l’ultimo giorno di apertura per il 2006, dato che la struttura funziona soltanto da luglio a settembre. Ho sentito dire che per mandare avanti una piscina all’aperto ci vogliono 3 milioni di yuan [US$375.000]. Se dovesse finanziarsi soltanto con l’incasso dei biglietti d’ingresso, sarebbe perennemente in deficit. Le aree edificabili scarseggiano a Pechino e il mercato immobiliare ha raggiunto cifre da capogiro. Così le piscine sono diventate una preda ambita e succulenta. Questa è l’unica che non sia stata demolita per riadibire l’area a scopi commerciali. Al suo posto, il prossimo anno, sorgerà un museo delle Olimpiadi. È assurdo che la gente debba rinunciare a un’attività sportiva per fare spazio a un museo dello sport.

Questa piscina ha una lunga storia. Sono 10 anni che vengo a nuotare qui. Costa poco e si sta bene.

Ci siamo scervellati per trovare un modo per salvare la piscina.

Come la possibilità di trasformarla in pista di pattinaggio d’inverno e in un laghetto per pescare in primavera e in autunno. There used to be lots of outdoor swimming pools in Beijing, but this is the last. Today is the last day it’s open in 2006. It’s only open from July to September. I’ve heard it costs 3 million yuan [US$375,000] to run an outdoor swimming pool. If its only income is the admission fee, it could never break even. Land is rare in Beijing and real estate prices are extremely high. Swimming pools have become the exceptional meat that everyone hungers for, but this is the only one that hasn’t been demolished and converted for commercial purposes. And it’s scheduled to be replaced by an Olympic museum next year. It seems absurd that people will lose a sport to build a sports museum.

This pool has so many years of history. I’ve been swimming here for 10 years. It’s cheap and good.

We have thought of ways to save the pool. What about using it as a skating rink in winter and a fishing pond in the spring and autumn? But it only freezes for one month every winter, and fish would make it smell. We also considered using it as a dance floor, but the police said it would disturb the neighbors.

Finally we tried to get help from the government. We wrote to the mayor and the city planning department, but neither have replied.

We also issued some articles on the Internet. That’s all we can do.

Sono sempre venuto qui a nuotare. Venivo con mio padre da bambino, e ora ci vengo con gli amici. In questo posto si sta da Dio. Ritrovo le stesse sensazioni dell’infanzia. Vedi quei murales: è rimasto tutto come prima. Ho provato ad andare a nuotare nelle nuove piscine coperte. Lì le attrezzature sono di gran lunga migliori, ma non mi ci trovo bene. A me piace quest’atmosfera semplice e naturale che c’è nelle piscine all’aperto, dove ti puoi stendere a prendere il sole sul bordo quando sei stanco.

Quando andavo alle medie, bazzicavo sempre da queste parti. Venivo a vedere le ragazze. Le ragazze di allora sembravano più carine di quelle di adesso. Quando c’era una che mi piaceva, mi tuffavo e le nuotavo vicino sott’acqua facendo finta di averla strusciata per sbaglio. Era terribilmente eccitante. È in questa piscina che un mio amico ha conosciuto la sua ragazza. La cosa buffa, però, è che da quando si sono messi insieme non sono più tornati a nuotare.

Vedi quella piscina con le corsie? Pensa che lì ci si allena anche la squadra nazionale. È una piscina agonistica. È molto profonda e per nuotarci bisogna aver superato un esame.

Che peccato che demoliranno questa piscina! Ma noi che ci possiamo fare? Non possiamo certo far cambiare idea ai politici. Anche se volessero demolire la piazza Tien An Men, non avremmo voce in capitolo.

I have always come here to swim. I came with my father when I was a child, and now I come with my friends. I enjoy it here very much. The feelings have remained from childhood. You see those paintings on the wall – it’s the same now as it was in the beginning.

I have tried to go to the newly built indoor swimming pools. The facilities are much better, but I find it hard to enjoy. I like the simple and natural feel of the outdoor pool. There is sunshine to bathe in, when you’re sitting on the side when you’re tired.

I came here most often when I was in middle school. I came to see the girls; they seemed prettier than the girls these days. I’d jump into the water when I saw a nice girl. I’d dive beside her, and touch her accidentally – it was very exciting. I have a friend who met his girlfriend here. But it’s funny – they never came to swim again after they became a couple.

You see that pool with lanes? Even the national team comes to train here. That pool is professional. It’s very deep. You can only swim here if you pass a test.

It would be a pity to demolish this pool, but what can we do? We can’t sway the government’s will. Even if it wanted to demolish Tian An Men Square, we couldn’t say anything about it.

Ci divertivamo tutti tantissimo ad andare a casa del nostro compagno al 12° piano. Mi ricordo ancora di quando ci andammo per la prima volta. Facevamo su e giù con l’ascensore, avanti e indietro, e poi ci mettevamo a guardare giù dalla finestra della sua camera.

Eravamo così meravigliati di vedere le macchine sotto di noi, per strada, grandi come scatolette di fiammiferi. Era tutto così nuovo ed eccitante. Ora è tutto cambiato. Sono spuntati una marea di grattacieli, come funghi, che hanno eclissato i complessi condominiali come questo. Ogni volta che passo qui di fronte in macchina, non posso fare a meno di pensare: chissà se vive ancora lì? Chissà che effetto mi farebbe andarlo a trovare oggi nel suo appartamento?

One of my primary school classmates once lived here. In the early 1980s this kind of apartment building was considered “so tall and so sumptuous.” It was a symbol of modernization.

Mio padre era uno degli otto principi dell’ultima dinastia cinese.

L’ultimo imperatore, Pu Yi, abdicò nel 1912. Quando il Giappone invase la Cina, mio padre fece trasferire la famiglia a Lvshun, che era sotto controllo giapponese. Voleva riportare sul trono la sua dinastia, e sperava nell’aiuto dei giapponesi. My father gave me the name Xianqi. It means “precious jade.” I am the youngest of my 21 brothers and 16 sisters. They called me the 17th princess.

My father was one of the eight princes of China’s last dynasty.

The last emperor, Pu Yi, abdicated in 1912. When the Japanese invaded, my father moved my family to Lvshun, which was under Japanese control. He wanted to stage a comeback for his dynasty, so he wanted help from the Japanese. He sent one of my sisters, Bihui, to an important Japanese official to become his adopted daughter. She became the most notorious secret agent for the Japanese in Chinese history.

My family was an eminent royal family. We had hundreds of servants with us, even throughout our escape. We still took the Rolls-Royce out when we were in Lvshun.

My father died when I was four. The people of Lvshun spoke of his luxurious funeral with great relish for many years afterwards.

I spent my teenage years, until I was 19, in Japan’s royal private school; those were my happiest school days. After Pearl Harbor in 1941, I was forced to go back to Beijing. Japan surrendered to China In 1945. My sister the spy was sentenced to death. Our siblings didn’t 二十三

feel very sad for her, but her actions really affected our lives later.

I stayed in Beijing after the liberation war. My siblings all went abroad. I ran a restaurant as an ordinary person. My business went well because a lot of celebrities visited since they knew I was running it. I got to know my first husband, Ma Wanli, there. He is a wellknown painter who had already been married twice. He was quite miserable. I felt sorry for him, and I admired his talent, so I invited him to live in my house and fixed up a place for him to paint.

One night in May 1958, some police came to my house to arrest me for being the relative of a spy. I began my 20 years in prison.

I had to find the correct words for my identity form. My identity was far too extraordinary, so I wrote “big downfallen noble from feudalism.” In jail, I was chosen to be a monitor. I was supposed to report on guilty people. I said, “How am I supposed to know who is guilty?”

I never cried in prison, I sang songs when I was sad. I noticed nobody could help you about your sadness, so I had to face it myself, optimistically.

I applied for a divorce from Ma when the Cultural Revolution began. I didn’t want him to be incriminated because of my identity. I wanted him to be free. His name on the divorce agreement had obviously been signed by his sister. I heard he absolutely refused to divorce me. That made me cry.

I was finally released from jail at the age of 55, but then they sent me to a farm outside Beijing for “labor reform.” I could not bear to live in the dormitory anymore, I longed for a separate apartment, so I married a man who I barely knew, just to get an apartment separate from the commune. I told him openly about my background and my experiences, and why I was marrying him.

Fortunately, we got on well. We bred ducks.

I missed Beijing very much. After the Cultural Revolution, I sent a letter out and printed upon it, quite simply, “To the president, Deng Xiaoping, in Beijing’s Central Government.” I wrote a detailed description of all the grievances I had endured. It’s miraculous, but I obtained justice. I was allowed back to Beijing, and began work as a translator in the city literature museum.

I got in touch with my classmates from the Japanese royal private school later and they invited me to emigrate to Japan. I refused. I’m Chinese, and I believed I should stay in my country as it continued to improve. I did visit Japan several times to collect contributions so I could start a Japanese language school in Beijing. Finally, I became its head teacher at the age of 80.

I had my 89th birthday yesterday. I live in an apartment in Beijing’s suburbs. I enjoy my life now. I still smoke two packs a day.

I sleep from six in the morning till two in the afternoon, because I love to see live sports from abroad, and there’s a time difference.

I don’t complain about the hard years of my past. I believe everything will be better tomorrow.

Non ho mai pianto in prigione, quando ero triste cantavo. Capii che nessuno poteva farsi carico della tua tristezza e che dovevo affrontare le difficoltà da sola, con ottimismo.

Quando cominciò la rivoluzione culturale, chiesi il divorzio. Non volevo che Ma fosse condannato per colpa mia. Non volevo che andasse in prigione. Ovviamente, la firma sui documenti la mise sua sorella. Venni a sapere che si era opposto ostinatamente al divorzio. Questo sì che mi fece piangere.

Avevo ormai 55 anni, quando uscii finalmente dal carcere. Dopo, però, mi spedirono in una fattoria fuori Pechino per la “rieducazione al lavoro”. Non ce la facevo più a vivere in un dormitorio, sognavo di avere un appartamento tutto per me. Per questo sposai un tipo che conoscevo a malapena, soltanto per avere un appartamento separato dalla comune. Gli raccontai senza remore tutta la mia vita e le esperienze che avevo vissuto, e il motivo per cui volevo sposarlo. Per fortuna, andavamo d’accordo. Allevavamo anatre.

Ma avevo una gran nostalgia di Pechino. Così, una volta finita la rivoluzione culturale, spedii una lettera indirizzata semplicemente al “Presidente Deng Xiaoping, Governo centrale di Pechino”. In quella lettera raccontavo con dovizia di particolari tutto quello che avevo sofferto. E fu un miracolo. Riuscii a ribaltare la sentenza, ottenendo il permesso di tornare a Pechino, dove cominciai a lavorare come traduttrice nel museo della Letteratura.

Più tardi ripresi i contatti con i vecchi compagni di classe della scuola reale giapponese, che mi proposero di emigrare in Giappone. Ma non volli. Sono cinese e pensai che fosse mio dovere restare nel mio paese, dato che la situazione stava migliorando. Ma feci comunque molti viaggi in Giappone per ottenere i finanziamenti necessari per aprire una scuola di giapponese a Pechino. E alla fine, all’età di 80 anni, diventai la direttrice della scuola.

Ieri ho festeggiato il mio ottantanovesimo compleanno. Vivo in un appartamento alla periferia di Pechino. E oggi posso dirmi soddisfatta della mia vita. Chen Yunbo, 82 anni

I came from a village in He Bei province. The Japanese invaded China when I was six. My father was captured. When he refused to work for them the Japanese beat him until they broke his head open. My father-in-law, a village headman, worked as a secret agent for the Chinese Army.

I started working in our landlord’s house when I was 15. He was very rich, with six wives and many servants. But he was criticized during the third civil war between the Communist Party and the Guomingtang and was expelled from the village. All his property was confiscated.

I came to Beijing with my husband in 1946. We worked as tailors for the country’s leaders. See this photo of Chairman Mao? We made his octagonal hat. On October 1, 1949, we were in Tian An Men Square for the ceremony of the founding of our country.

I worked as a volunteer in charge of propaganda in the community committee after I retired. I have two sons and four daughters and a great-grandson, so we have four generations in our family.

I have lived in this apartment for 20 years. I don’t go out much on account of my legs. I enjoy staying at home, listening to the radio and watching TV. My children give me money every week and they’ve employed a carer for me. They come to see me often. I feel really happy now.

Arrivai a Pechino con mio marito nel 1946. Facevamo i sarti per i politici che dirigevano il paese. Hai presente quella foto del presidente Mao? Il berretto militare che ha in testa lo abbiamo fatto noi. Il 1° ottobre del 1949 eravamo andati a piazza Tien An Men per la cerimonia della fondazione del paese. Il presidente se ne stette in piedi su un carro armato durante tutta la sfilata.

Quando andai in pensione, cominciai a lavorare come volontaria nel comitato locale per la propaganda. Ho due figli e quattro figlie, e un bisnipote. Così adesso abbiamo quattro generazioni in famiglia. Vivo in questo appartamento da 20 anni. Non riesco a fare molta strada sulle mie gambe. L’Opera di Pechino è un’arte nobile e antica. Ma nella Cina moderna il genere è in crisi. Benché le serie televisive cinesi a sfondo storico siano ancora popolari, la gente cerca la modernità e preferisce spettacoli giapponesi, coreani e americani, snobbando la tradizione. Vogliono fumetti manga, non opere teatrali della dinastia Ming. Così gli spettacoli dell’Opera di Pechino ormai attirano soltanto i poveri e gli anziani, richiamati dai temi tradizionali o dai biglietti economici. Le cose vanno talmente a rotoli che l’anno scorso l’Opera di Pechino non è neanche riuscita a trovare una sala per l’Anno Nuovo e per il Festival di Primavera, perché tutti i teatri di Pechino allestivano produzioni straniere. A mali estremi, estremi rimedi: l’anno scorso l’Opera di Pechino ha pubblicizzato una serie di spettacoli nelle università. Per l’occasione sono stati lanciati due slogan. Il primo – “Fatti una cultura sull’Opera di Pechino, potrai discuterne con gli stranieri” – avrà sicuramente più successo del secondo: “Ti hanno rimpinzato di pizza e McDonald’s. È l’ora di gustarsi un buon tè cinese”.

Beijing opera is an old and noble art form. But in modern China, it’s in crisis. Although historically themed Chinese soap operas are popular, forward-looking Chinese want Japanese, Korean and American entertainment, not tradition. They want Manga cartoons, not Ming dynasty drama. As a result, Beijing opera performances are generally only attended by the poor and elderly, attracted by tradition and cheap ticket prices. Things have become so bad that the Beijing Opera Studio couldn’t find a venue during last year’s New Year and Spring Festival, usually a boom time for Beijing opera performances, because Beijing’s theatres were all putting on foreign productions. Desperate times require desperate measures: The Beijing Opera Studio last year advertised a series of performances in universities with two slogans. The first – “Learn about Beijing opera so you can talk about it with foreigners” – will probably have more success than the second, “You’ve been fed with pizza and McDonald’s. A Pechino c’è una concorrenza spaventosa, ed è difficilissimo guadagnarsi da vivere con la danza. L’unica cosa che so fare è ballare, non potrei fare nessun altro lavoro.

Sono alta 1 metro e 67 e peso 50 chili. Un po’ troppo. Una ballerina non deve prendere peso, per questo sto a dieta.

Non so come spiegare i sentimenti che provo verso questa città. È un po’ come per l’accademia, è un posto che adoro e che odio allo stesso tempo. Pechino offre molte possibilità, ma è impossibile abituarsi al traffico e all’inquinamento. Appena arrivata ero fiera di stare qui. Ora non più.

Il mio fidanzato si è diplomato in quest’accademia e adesso studia jazz e danza moderna in Nuova Zelanda. Spera anche lui di fare l’insegnante, una volta tornato a Pechino. Era innamorato di me già da qualche anno, ma era troppo timido per dirmelo. Ho dovuto strappargli letteralmente le parole di bocca. Adesso ci sentiamo tutti i giorni al telefono. Mi manca da morire.

Non invidio lo stile di vita delle altre ragazze. La mia vita sarà pure noiosa, ma a me piace. E finché potrò ballare, va tutto bene.

I entered this academy when I was 12. I majored in ancient dance.

I’d like to take postgraduate courses and then get a teaching job here. Competition is so fierce in Beijing, and it’s very difficult to live off dancing. I’m skilled at nothing but dancing so any other jobs are impossible for me.

I’m 167cm high and weigh 50kg. That’s a bit much. You can’t afford to get heavy as a dancer, so I’ve been on a diet.

It’s hard to say exactly what I feel about Beijing. It’s somewhat like my academy, which I love very much, but I hate it too. You have a lot of chances in Beijing, but you’ll never get used to its bad environment and the traffic. I felt proud of being here when I first came, but now I don’t.

My boyfriend graduated from this academy and is now studying jazz and modern dance in New Zealand. He’s also hoping to be a teacher when he comes back to Beijing. He fell in love with me a few years ago but was too shy to express it. I forced him to get the words out. Now we chat on the phone every day. I miss him badly.

I don’t envy the lifestyle of other girls. My life is somewhat dull but I like it. As long as I can dance, I feel secure. 三十二

Vivo a Pechino da due anni. Molta gente del mio villaggio è venuta a Pechino per cercare di guadagnare meglio. I miei compaesani pensano che ho un buon lavoro, e il mio capo mi tratta bene. Vorrei soltanto poter guadagnare di più, perché sono preoccupata per il matrimonio dei miei due figli. Non sono più dei bambini. Uno ha 25 anni e l’altro 20. A quest’età dovrebbero già pensare al matrimonio. Nel nostro villaggio la tradizione vuole che la famiglia dello sposo compri un regalo di fidanzamento alla famiglia della ragazza. Di regola costa intorno ai 50.000 yuan [US$ 6.250].

My job is to take care of the sick in the hospital. Being a nursing worker is in between being a nanny and a nurse.

I’ve been in Beijing for two years. Many people from my village have come to Beijing in search of better pay. People in my village think I’ve got a good job, and my employer treats me well. My only wish is to make more money, because I’m so anxious about my two sons’ marriages. They’re not boys any more — one is 25, and the other is 20. They should be getting married at this age. The custom in our village is for the boy’s family to pay the girl’s family a betrothal gift.

One betrothal gift is usually 50,000 yuan [US$6,250].

I earn 600 yuan [US$75] every month. That means that to save up enough to buy betrothal gifts I’d have to work for 13 years without spending a cent. 三十五

“Cercano la perfezione per i figli.”

Ogni settimana migliaia di persone prendono d’assalto i parchi di Pechino. A prima vista si direbbe un momento di svago, in realtà sono lì per occuparsi di una questione molto seria. Sono tutti genitori a caccia di un buon partito per i loro rampolli. I genitori presentano una serie di dati sui propri figli. Le informazioni fondamentali, nel circuito dei “giardini matrimoniali”, di regola comprendono l’età, l’altezza, la professione, lo stipendio ed eventualmente l’auto o l’appartamento di proprietà.

Dopo il primo contatto, comincia l’iter standard. I genitori fanno conoscenza e si scambiano i dati personali dei rispettivi virgulti. Se entrambi – genitori e figli – superano l’esame, ci sarà uno scambio di numeri telefonici. Spetterà poi ai genitori del ragazzo di chiamare la ragazza; mentre i genitori di lei consulteranno la figlia per vedere se è interessata. In caso affermativo, la ragazza acconsentirà a dare il proprio numero di cellulare al ragazzo. Sembra semplice, ma “Il numero di matrimoni che vanno in porto non è alto” spiega il sig. Gu, che nel tentativo di far sposare il figlio è diventato un habitué di uno di questi parchi. “Penso che alcuni genitori vengano con lo spirito sbagliato. Cercano la perfezione per i figli. Ma qui c’è l’imbarazzo della scelta e, alle fine, sono così frastornati che non sanno più decidersi.”

Non solo, spesso vengono criticati anche dagli stessi figli che stanno cercando di accasare, e che trovano inconcepibile, ai tempi nostri, di essere mercanteggiati come un’automobile. “C’è chi è imbarazzato” racconta il sig. Gu. “Preferiscono sposarsi più tardi e concentrarsi sulla carriera.” Ma niente può fermare un genitore in missione matrimoniale. “I cinesi oggigiorno lavorano troppo” prosegue il sig. Gu. “E l’ambiente sul luogo di lavoro è troppo limitato. Hanno bisogno del nostro aiuto per le pubbliche relazioni.”

Volenti o nolenti…

“They want someone perfect for their child.”

Each week, thousands of people gather in Beijing’s parks. It may look like recreation but it’s serious business. All are parents, and all of them are looking to marry off their children. They bring along their children’s basic information. In the world of marriage parks, this includes age, height, occupation, salary, and whether the child has his/her own car and/or apartment.

There is a standard procedure. Parents talk, get to know one another and exchange the information about their children. If they – parents and prospective daughter- or son-in-law – pass muster, phone numbers are exchanged. Then the boy’s parents will call the girl’s. The girl’s parents consult with their daughter to see if she’s interested. The girl will allow her cell phone number to be given to the boy. Although it sounds simple, “The success rate here isn’t high,” says Mr. Gu, who has come to one park often in an effort to marry off his son. “I think some parents come here with the wrong attitude. They want someone perfect for their child. But there are too many choices here. Parents get dazed, and they can’t make a decision.”

Parents are also criticized by their marriageable children, who think it unbecoming in modern times to be traded like cars. “Some are embarrassed,” says Mr. Gu. “They’re happy to concentrate on their career and marry later.” But nothing can stop parents on a marriage mission. “Children these days work too hard,” says Mr. Gu. “And their working environment is too limited. They need us to act as their agents.” Whether they like it or not. 三十六

Ho trascorso i primi anni della mia vita nella casa dei nonni materni. Ero un maschiaccio e giocavo sempre con i maschi. Correvamo negli hutong [i tradizionali vicoli] a caccia di libellule, facendo roteare i giubbotti sopra le nostre teste.

I nonni vivevano in un hutong chiamato “Campanella”, perché stava dietro le antiche Torri della Campana e del Tamburo di Pechino. Giocavamo a nascondino nella vecchia torre. Mi ricordo che sentivo dei passi dietro di noi, ma che non c’era mai nessuno. Quel posto mi terrorizzava. D’inverno andavamo a pattinare sul lago ghiacciato di HouHai. Mangiavamo la neve e non avevamo mai freddo. La neve era dolce. Non c’era l’inquinamento, come oggi.

Dopo il divorzio dei miei, sono andata a vivere per un po’ dai genitori di mio padre. Mio nonno praticava il Qigong. Quando dormiva, aprivo il suo cassetto nella speranza di trovare qualche libro sui segreti del kung-fu. Una volta ne ho trovato uno con delle immagini che mostravano come eseguire alcune mosse. Mi sono esercitata tantissimo con quel libro. E più tardi, mi sono messa a insegnare a un gruppo di bambini.

La madre di mio padre fa l’insegnante. È molto severa. Mi faceva sempre recitare delle poesie della dinastia Tang. Potevo andare a cena soltanto dopo che avevo finito. Non mi piace vestirmi da femmina, ma la nonna mi faceva sempre indossare camicie e gonne a fiori. Una volta che mi ero messa una giacca da maschio per andare a scuola, la maestra mi fece tornare a casa.

Mio zio lavorava al ministero degli Esteri. A quei tempi era rarissimo che la gente andasse all’estero. Lui ci andava. Mi portò persino una lattina di Coca-Cola dall’America. C’era un disegno di Babbo Natale sopra, e così per anni fui convinta che Babbo Natale fosse il presidente degli Stati Uniti, perché all’epoca l’unica faccia che si vedeva dappertutto in Cina era quella del presidente Mao. Molti bambini nati dopo gli anni 80 hanno vissuto il trauma del divorzio dei genitori. I miei si sono entrambi risposati e hanno avuto altri figli. Ora ho un negozio di abbigliamento con un’amica. Cerco di assaporare ogni giorno della vita, ma a volte mi sento improvvisamente sola. Ho nostalgia dei giorni felici dell’infanzia.

Oggi il mio sogno è di possedere un appartamento tutto per me, anche uno piccolino, da poter arredare come mi pare e piace.

A questo punto della vita, non so più quali siano i miei orientamenti sessuali. Ma penso di preferire le ragazze ai ragazzi. Sono innamorata di una tipa da molto tempo. Vorrei che diventasse la mia ragazza. Non credo nel cosiddetto amore contraccambiato.

Ma credo nelle esperienze e nei sentimenti. Sono queste le cose vere della vita.

He Ting, 22

I spent my early childhood in my maternal grandparents’ house. I acted like a boy and played with the boys. We ran throughout the hutong [lanes], chasing dragonflies, swinging our jackets above our heads.

My grandparents lived in a hutong called “Small Bell,” because it was behind Beijing’s ancient Bell and Drum Tower. We used to play hide and seek in the old tower. I remember hearing footsteps behind us, but there was never anyone there. It was frightening.

Every winter, we skated on the frozen surface of HouHai Lake.

We ate snow and never felt cold. The snow was sweet. There was no pollution like there is today.

After my parents’ divorce, I lived with my father’s parents for a long time. My grandfather practiced Qigong. I would open his drawer while he slept, hoping to find some books of kung-fu secrets. Once I did find one that had pictures showing how to do the moves. I practiced a lot from those pictures. Later, I taught a group of children.

My father’s mother is a teacher. She’s very strict. She was always making me recite poems from the Tang dynasty. I could only have dinner when I’d finished. I don’t like girls’ clothing, but grandma always made me wear a floral shirt and skirt. Once I wore a boy’s jacket to school and my teacher sent me home.

My uncle worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At that time it was very rare for people to go abroad, but he did. He brought me a can of Coca-Cola from America. There was a Santa Claus on the can, so for ages I thought Santa Claus was president of the United States, because in those days we only ever saw Chairman Mao’s face everywhere.

Many children born after the 1980s have to face the problem of their parents divorcing. My parents have both remarried and had more children. Now I run a small clothes shop with a friend. I try to enjoy every day but sometimes I’m suddenly lonely. I miss those happy childhood days. My wish now is to own an apartment for myself, even a small one, so I could decorate it as I please.

I don’t know my sexual orientation at this point. But I think I love girls more than boys. I have been fond of a girl for a long time. I wish I could be together with her. I don’t believe in requited love, but I do believe in experience and feeling. Those things are true. 三十九

Cosplay è un gioco di ruolo in cui persone in carne ed ossa interpretano i personaggi dei manga, i fumetti giapponesi. Ora, ad esempio, sto impersonando Lolita: una ragazza carina e innocente.

Gioco a cosplay da due anni. Prima ero un’appassionata lettrice di fumetti. Poi ho conosciuto una ragazza che creava costumi per i coser [i giocatori di cosplay] e mi sono fatta fare un abito. Adoravo indossarlo. Era come se mi conferisse uno speciale potere: la facoltà di evadere dalla realtà. Adesso sono la presidente di un gruppo di cosplay. Devo convincere persone di bell’aspetto a interpretare i personaggi, e autori di talento a scriverci delle storie. Non abbiamo molte occasioni di recitare in pubblico. Per lo più andiamo ai festival di fumetti.

Ora ho sei completi di cosplay, che costano circa 400 yuan [US$50] l’uno. Sono cari, ma i miei genitori mi aiutano perché non ci trovano nulla di male nel fare pazzie quando si è adolescenti.

Trovo che oggi la vita per i giovani sia piuttosto noiosa. Solo insegnanti, compagni di classe, genitori e ore interminabili di studio.

E tutto si limita a due valutazioni: chi va bene a scuola e chi va male. Odio questo metro di giudizio, perché significa pretendere che tutti siano uguali, senza eccezioni. Molti dei miei compagni di classe non capiscono perché gioco a cosplay, ma loro non ci giocano mai e quindi non hanno le basi per giudicare. Ho molti fan che mi adorano. Sono il loro idolo. Dopo ogni spettacolo, c’è sempre qualcuno che vuole farsi fotografare insieme a me o che mi chiede il mio numero di telefono.

Non penso che smetterò mai di giocare a cosplay. Quando sarò più grande vorrei fare un lavoro dietro le quinte, magari creare costumi. È bellissimo fare qualcosa che ti piace e poter vivere di quella passione.

Cosplay is the game of real people playing the roles in Japanese cartoons. At the moment I’m playing the role of Lolita. Her character is pure and pretty.

I’ve played cosplay for two years. I used to read lots of comic books. Then I met a girl who made costumes for cosers [cosplay players], so I had a costume made. I loved wearing it. It was like it endowed me with some kind of power, like I could escape reality. Now I’m the chairman of a cosplay group. I have to persuade pretty people to play the roles, and get talented people to write the storylines. We don’t have many chances to perform, and they’re usually at comic festivals.

I’ve now got six sets of cosplay costumes, which cost about 400 yuan [US$50] each. It’s expensive, but my parents support me because they think it’s not wrong to do crazy things when you’re a teenager.

I feel life for kids now is quite boring. It’s all teachers, classmates, parents and endless study. There are only two kinds of evaluation – you’re either a kid with good marks or a kid with bad marks. I hate that standard of judgment, it means that everyone should be alike. No exceptions. Many of my classmates can’t understand why I play cosplay, but they never play it so they’re not qualified to comment. I’ve got lots of fans who regard me as their idol.

After every performance, there’s always someone who comes up to have a photo taken with me or to ask for my phone number.

I don’t think I’ll ever give up cosplay. I want to work at a behindthe-scenes job when I get older, maybe make cosplay costumes.

Sono nata durante la rivoluzione culturale. All’epoca avevano chiuso tutte le chiese, perché la religione era considerata una forma di superstizione feudale. Nessuno osava esprimere apertamente la propria religiosità. Chi credeva in Dio doveva leggere la Bibbia di nascosto a casa.

Mia zia era suora. Era molto graziosa ed elegante, e conduceva una vita semplice e pura. Ero molto attirata dalla sua vita di suora e cominciai a sognare di prendere i voti. Mia zia era felice delle mie intenzioni, ma diceva sempre “Sciocchina, ormai sono finiti i bei tempi. Credere in Dio oggi è diventato irrealistico.”

Dopo la fine della rivoluzione culturale, le chiese cominciarono poco a poco a riaprire i battenti e io accompagnavo sempre mia zia. Poi, però, trovai un lavoro in fabbrica. Vedendomi così sorridente, vestita di abiti variopinti, la zia pensava che avessi perso la vocazione. Un giorno il sacerdote annunciò che la chiesa aveva avuto il permesso di ordinare nuove suore. Feci subito richiesta.

Superai l’esame – matematica, politica, cinese, inglese e teologia – e divenni una delle sei novizie selezionate su 20 candidature.

Mia zia era molto fiera di me.

Il giorno in cui dovevo lasciare casa, mia madre ebbe una trombosi. Se fosse rimasta paralizzata, sarei dovuta restare a casa e non avrei potuto seguire la mia vocazione. Invece, guarì miracolosamente nel giro di una ventina di giorni. Pensai allora che fosse un segno di Dio, che mi metteva alla prova. Mia madre, ormai rassicurata, mi lasciò andare in chiesa. Durante il rito d’iniziazione scoppiai a piangere. Aspettavo quel momento da 10 anni.

I was born during the Cultural Revolution. All churches were closed down then because religion was thought to be feudal superstition. Nobody dared be openly religious. People who believed in God read their Bibles sneakily at home.

My aunt was a nun. She was graceful and elegant and lived a simple and clean life. Her life as a nun attracted me so much that I began dreaming of becoming one. My aunt was happy I was thinking of that, but she said, “You silly child, the good times are over. Believing in God now is unrealistic.”

After the Cultural Revolution ended, churches gradually began to reopen. I would accompany my aunt to church, but then I got a job in a factory. Seeing me wear colorful clothes and looking so happy, my aunt thought I’d given up wanting to be a nun. One day, the priest said the church could now recruit nuns. I applied immediately. I passed the exams – math, politics, Chinese, English and theology – and became one of six novices to be accepted out of 20 who had applied. My aunt was very proud.

But the day I was going to leave home, my mother had a thrombosis. If she’d been paralyzed, I would have had to stay home and not answer the call from God. But she recovered miraculously in 20 days. I thought it was God’s doing and a test. My mother was reassured, and sent me off to the church. During the initiation rite, I cried. I’d been waiting for that moment for 10 years.

Today, I’m the deputy director of St. Joseph’s mission and deputy editor of the church newspaper, Daylight News. I have a column called “Sister Wang Li’s Mailbox,” where I give advice to people who write in with doubts and perplexity. 四十六

Mio papà è morto in un incidente automobilistico quando avevo 11 anni. Mia madre si è risposata sette anni dopo la morte di mio padre. Due anni dopo, anche lei ha perso la vita in un incidente automobilistico, insieme a mia zia e a mio cugino. A volte, ho la sensazione che Dio si stia facendo beffe di me. Dopo la tragedia, i miei parenti si sono fatti causa a vicenda per i soldi dell’assicurazione. E questo mi ha veramente intristito. Due anni dopo la morte di mia madre, il mio patrigno è tornato dalla sua ex moglie.

Non lo odio, né lui né la sua famiglia. Sono soltanto dispiaciuta per mia madre. Mi sa che non avrò più una vera famiglia. È da quando andavo a scuola che sognavo di diventare un’artista.

Ho fatto studi artistici fino alla morte di mia madre. Poi, ho deciso di fare la modella perché non avevo soldi per pagare le tasse universitarie. Mi sembrava un modo per entrare in contatto con l’Accademia di Belle Arti e gli artisti in genere. In un certo senso, questa scelta è stata un trauma anche per me, ma sentivo di dover cambiare la mia vita e il mio destino. Ho lasciato la mia città senza dirlo a nessuno e sono venuta qui, a Pechino, dove ho trovato lavoro come modella all’Accademia centrale di Belle Arti. Mi pagano 21 yuan [US$2,62] l’ora. Ho diritto a una pausa di cinque minuti ogni mezz’ora se è una posa semplice, e ogni dieci o venti minuti se sto in una posizione più scomoda. Lavoro anche privatamente come modella per alcuni pittori e scultori famosi. Continuo a disegnare, e frequento locali dove vanno altri artisti per farmi consigliare sul mio lavoro. Mi aiutano molto e mi sostengono. Spero di poter allestire una mostra monografica delle mie opere nel quartiere degli artisti 798.

Durante il mio primo anno a Pechino vivevo in uno scantinato con il muro di doghe di legno. Avevo come vicini, a sinistra, un barbiere e sua moglie e, a destra, il commesso di un minimarket.

Ho strani ricordi di quel periodo, perché ogni notte potevo sentire perfettamente i rumorosi amplessi del barbiere e di sua moglie, mentre il commesso imprecava come un ossesso contro di loro.

Pechino mi sembrava un sogno da piccola. Sembrava così lontana e irraggiungibile. Oggi ho un’altra visione di questa città, molto diversa da come me l’immaginavo.

Meng Liping, 26, artist’s body model

My dad died from a car accident when I was 11. My mother married another man seven years after my dad’s death. Two years later, my mother was killed in another car accident, along with my aunt and cousin. Sometimes I feel God is making a fool of me. Afterwards, my relatives sued each other about the compensation, which made me very sad. Two years after my mother’s death, my stepfather went back to his ex-wife. I don’t hate my stepfather or his family, I just feel sorry for my mother. I guess I’ll never have a real family again.

I’ve dreamed of being an artist since school. I took art classes until my mother’s death. I didn’t have the money for university fees so I decided to become an artist’s model. I thought this would be a way of getting close to art college and to artists. My decision sort of shocked me, but I felt I had to change my life and my fate. I left my hometown without telling my friends and came to Beijing, where I found a job as an artists’ model in the Central Academy of Fine Art. I get paid 21 yuan [US$2.62] per hour. I’m allowed a five-minute break every half hour if it’s a simple pose, and a break every 10 to 20 minutes for the more difficult poses. I also work for some famous painters and sculptors as their private body model. I still draw, and I go to cafés with artists to get their advice on my work. They give me a lot of help and support. I may get to have a solo exhibition of my work in the 798 art area.

For my first year in Beijing, I lived in a basement. The wall was made of clapboard. The neighbors on my left were a barber and his wife.

On the right was a salesclerk from a minimarket. I have strange memories of the time, because every night I could clearly hear the barber couple making love, then the salesclerk shouting curses at them.

Beijing seemed a dream to me when I was little. It seemed so far away, I thought I could never get there. Now I think Beijing is very different from how it was in my imagination. 五十一

Sono un poeta. Ho scritto tante poesie. Ho anche chiamato una casa editrice della mia provincia, per cercare di far pubblicare le mie opere. Ma mi hanno risposto che oggigiorno è molto difficile vendere poesie. Così ho deciso di venire a Pechino per vedere se qui c’erano più possibilità. È la prima volta che vengo a Pechino. Ieri sono andato a piazza Tien An Men e ho speso 30 yuan [US$4] per farmi una foto ricordo. La mamma sarà fiera di me. È da quando sono piccolo che sogno di venire a Pechino, come la maggior parte dei bambini del resto. Questa città viene osannata in un mucchio di canzoni. Ma quando sono arrivato devo ammettere che è stata un po’ una delusione. Sto in un ostello che si chiama “Bagni pubblici” e si trova in un palazzo che prima era adibito a magazzino. Costa soltanto 15 yuan a notte [US$2], ed è vicinissimo al centro, ma lo spazio è davvero risicato. Sono 3 m2 in tutto. C’è posto soltanto per un lettino singolo. Ci puoi andare solo a dormire. È un tipo che ho conosciuto in treno che mi ha consigliato quest’ostello. Mi aveva anche proposto un lavoro come guardia giurata, ma io ho rifiutato. Gli ho detto “Voglio fare il poeta e andare all’università, e nient’altro. Questa è la mia strada”.

Il primo libro che mi ha comprato mia madre era Trecento poesie della dinastia Tang. Ho scritto la mia prima poesia a 11 anni. Il mio poeta preferito è Rabindranath Tagore. Mia madre dice che fare il poeta significa fare la fame.

All’inizio non capivo cosa volesse dire, ma ora comincio ad avere le idee più chiare. Questa è un’epoca che non ha bisogno di poeti. La gente ormai sogna di diventare pop star o un ricco imprenditore. Molti dei miei amici dopo la scuola media si sono iscritti a un istituto professionale. C’è anche chi è andato nelle grandi città come Pechino e Shanghai per studiare arredamento d’interni, e fare soldi a palate. Ma io continuo comunque a voler fare il poeta e pubblicare le mie poesie.

Ogni Capodanno organizziamo una rimpatriata fra gli amici d’infanzia, ma i loro discorsi non m’interessano più. Non so se siano loro ad essere cambiati, oppure io. A volte mi sento solo, ma capisco che gli amici sono amici e i sogni sono sogni. A loro non leggo mai le mie poesie. Dovrei abituarmi alla solitudine, perché soltanto le persone sole si sforzano di pensare al significato della vita.

I am a poet, I’ve written many poems. I called the publishing house in my province asking them to think about publishing my works, but they told me that poems are really hard to sell today. So I decided to come to Beijing and see if there was more opportunity here.

This is my first time in Beijing. I went to Tian An Men Square yesterday and spent 30 yuan [US$4] taking an instant photo there.

My mum will be proud of me. I’ve yearned for Beijing since childhood, as many children have. There are many songs of praise for Beijing, but I was a bit disappointed when I actually arrived.

The hostel I’m staying in during this trip is called Public Bathing.

The building used to be a warehouse. It only costs 15 yuan [US$2] a night, and it’s very close to the city center, but the space is really small. It’s only 3 square meters. There’s only enough room for a single bed. You can’t do anything but sleep.

A man on the train told me about the hostel. He offered to find a security guard job for me, but I refused. I said, “I want to be a poet. I will go to college, and this is my only way.”

The first book my mum bought me was 300 poems of the Tang Dynasty. I wrote my first poem when I was 11. My favorite poet is Rabindranath Tagore. My mother told me I would go hungry if I decided to be a poet.

I didn’t understand at first, but things are getting clearer. This is an era that doesn’t need poets. Most people dream of becoming pop stars or rich bosses. Many of my friends entered a professional school after junior middle school; some went to the big cities like Beijing and Shanghai to do interior decoration, to earn big money. But I still want to be a poet and to publish my poems.

I get together with my childhood friends every New Year, but I’ve got no interest in what they talk about. I don’t know if I’ve changed or they have. Sometimes I feel lonely, but I understand that friends are friends and dreams are dreams. I never read my poems to them. I should get used to being alone, because only lonely people try to think about the meaning of life. 五十二

Nell’aprile del 1992 McDonald’s aprì una delle sue prime insegne in Cina, sulla via Wang Fu Jing, a Pechino. Era il più grande McDonald’s del mondo. Il giorno dell’inaugurazione c’erano 10.000 clienti. Da allora sono stati aperti 700 McDonald’s in tutto il paese.

I cinesi hanno considerato per lungo tempo McDonald’s come un locale dove festeggiare i compleanni, passare una serata romantica e incontrare gli amici. McDonald’s da noi era considerato un locale più chic che in America. Oggi, invece, è un normalissimo fast food. Ce ne sono tanti a Pechino. Ormai non rappresenta più qualcosa di speciale.

In April 1992 McDonald’s opened its first establishment in China, on Beijing’s Wang Fu Jing Street. It was the biggest McDonald’s in the world, and on opening day it attracted 10,000 customers.

Since then, 700 McDonald’s restaurants have opened in China.

For a long time, the Chinese used McDonald’s as a venue for birthday parties, for dating and for meeting friends. For them it was a more formal place than for Americans. Now McDonald’s is just like any other fast food restaurant on the streets of Beijing.

Ho fatto studi di fisica. Dopo la laurea ho lavorato per qualche anno come tecnico Internet. Poi mi sono dato alla vendita di prodotti on-line e mi sono reso conto che il potenziale di mercato era enorme in Cina.

Tre anni fa ho aperto un negozio che si chiama Acqua di fonte.

Ora sono proprietario di cinque negozi a Pechino. Il mio sogno è aprire 100 punti-vendita in tutta la Cina.

Non mi limito a vendere dei prodotti: in realtà voglio vendere una filosofia di vita. I cinesi dovrebbero diventare più aperti sul sesso. Le coppie dovrebbero cercare di ravvivare il rapporto. Tutte le donne dovrebbero possedere almeno 10 completini intimi sexy. Anche i vibratori e gli olii per massaggi sono fondamentali.

Qualche anno fa la gente era ancora inibita a entrare in un sexy shop. Spesso entrava solo l’uomo, mentre la donna aspettava fuori. E, quando venivano delle donne, dicevano sempre che stavano comprando qualcosa per qualcun altro. Ma ora la situazione è cambiata. La gente esprime apertamente i propri bisogni. Chiedono consigli e informazioni sui prodotti.

Nella generazione di mio padre, i tre quarti della gente che viveva nelle grandi città venivano da villaggi e piccole cittadine. Il sistema produttivo, agricolo o industriale, plasmava e controllava le relazioni interpersonali. Essendo il lavoro a offrire praticamente le uniche possibilità di socializzazione, le persone erano soggette al vaglio continuo da parte della propria cerchia di conoscenze. Ma con il progresso sociale, la gente ha acquisito maggiore mobilità.

Il legame fra la famiglia e la comunità si è indebolito. E si può vivere più apertamente la propria sessualità.

La mia generazione ha avuto raramente l’occasione di parlare o informarsi sul sesso. Per questo io e i miei amici andavamo nei video-bar clandestini a vedere film porno. Dovevamo sempre sorbirci in paio di film di banditi di Hong Kong, prima che si decidessero a trasmettere i film a luci rosse. E, comunque, erano sempre tagliati. Oggi i film porno e le pubblicazioni sul sesso sono sempre soggetti a censura in Cina, ma la gente è diventata più aperta sulle questioni che riguardano la sessualità. L’adulterio non è più un reato dal 1985.

In realtà, storicamente la Cina è sempre stato un paese molto aperto in fatto di sesso. Gli uomini avevano varie mogli e la prostituzione era legale. Anche i gay e le lesbiche comparivano spesso nei romanzi. L’Europa ha un lungo passato di ascetismo. Secondo me tutti i cinesi sognano un ritorno al passato, quando un uomo poteva avere più mogli. Il che è facilmente comprensibile, è una questione d’istinto animale.

I majored in physics. I worked as an Internet engineer for some years after graduating. I started selling things online, mainly adult products. I realized there was potentially a huge market in China.

I opened a store named Spring Water three years ago. Now I own five stores in Beijing. My dream is to open 100 shops all over China.

I don’t want only to sell products; I want to sell a concept. Chinese people should be more open about sexual matters. Couples should try to keep their relationship fresh. Every woman should own 10 pairs of sexy underwear. Vibrators and massage oils are also crucial.

Ideally, everybody should spend 3,000-5,000 yuan [US$375-625] a year on adult products. In fact, only 1 per cent of the population buys sexual paraphernalia. Our customers are usually aged between 30 and 45, with a good income. They’re trying to find something fresh in life and to escape from the pressures of work.

A few years ago, people were still inhibited about going into adult shops. Often, it was only the man that went in, while the woman waited outside. When women came in, they always said they were buying something for someone else. But the situation has changed. People are more open about expressing their needs.

They want suggestions and product information.

In my father’s generation, three-quarters of people in big cities came from small cities and villages. The factory and agricultural systems affected and controlled people’s relationships with one another. Mostly, the only people you knew were at work, so you were constantly scrutinized by acquaintances. But as society progressed, people got more mobile. The connection between family and community has got weaker. People have the freedom to face sex more openly.

My generation rarely had the chance to hear about or talk about sex, so my friends and I would go to underground video bars to see XXX-rated films. We always had to wait through two Hong Kong gunfight movies before they started showing the XXX films, and even then they cut out some parts. Today, XXX films and sex-related publications are still censored in China, but people are more open-minded about sex related topics. Adultery was decriminalized in 1985.

In fact, in the past, China was very open about sex. Men had several wives and prostitutes were legal. Even gays and lesbians were common in novels. Europe experienced a period of asceticism, but China never did until the start of this century, and during the drastic changes in our society. I believe every Chinese man dreams of venturing back to ancient times, when they could have several wives. It’s easily understood when animal instinct is taken into consideration. 五十六

Mi ricordo che un giorno stavo lavorando a maglia sul divano, a casa, quando mia figlia mi chiese “Mamma, sei felice?”. La sua domanda mi fece sobbalzare, e risposi di getto “Sì, abbastanza, e tu tesoro?”. E lei sbottò “No. Proprio per niente. Devo andare a scuola tutti i giorni e fare i compiti”.

Oggi i bambini sgobbano troppo. Noi adulti lavoriamo 40 ore alla settimana, ma i bambini sono molto più stanchi di noi perché passano troppe ore a studiare. Mia figlia va in seconda elementare.

Si alza alle 6 per prendere il pulmino scolastico. Le prime lezioni cominciano alle 7.20 e continuano fino alle 16.30. Poi ha un’ora di meditazione. Dopo cena, alle 18.30, deve fare i compiti. E a volte non finisce prima delle 21 o delle 22. Nel weekend ha una serie di altri impegni. Lezioni d’inglese venerdì sera, violino il sabato mattina, disegno la domenica mattina. È ancora così piccola, eppure non riesce neanche a dormire otto ore a notte. Cerco di darle l’alimentazione più sana possibile, ma ho paura che le si blocchi la crescita. E sono anche molto preoccupata per la vista: la metà dei suoi compagni di classe è miope già in seconda elementare.

E non è perché siamo dei genitori troppo esigenti, ma perché è quello che fanno tutti gli altri bambini. Non possiamo permetterci di farla restare indietro. Le attività extrascolastiche contribuiscono a migliorare la media dei voti. In Cina per avere un buon lavoro bisogna laurearsi nelle migliori università. E per iscriversi nelle migliori università si devono mandare i propri figli in un buon liceo. Anche gli insegnanti durante le riunioni con i genitori insistono, esacerbando questo clima di competitività. Ci dicono che il futuro dei nostri bambini si decide adesso. E una volta che si perde un treno – dicono – si perdono automaticamente tutti gli altri. Le basi della scuola elementare devono essere eccellenti. C’è chi cerca addirittura di mentire sulle propria etnia, sostenendo di appartenere a una minoranza, perché in questo modo si possono guadagnare automaticamente 10 punti all’esame di ammissione all’università.

A volte vorrei soltanto poter dare a mia figlia qualche giorno di vacanza. Portarla in campagna a guardare la natura e a rilassarsi.

Ma devo sempre reprimere questo desiderio. Oggi i bambini non possono permettersi il lusso di rilassarsi. Tutto il loro futuro dipenderà dai risultati scolastici: il lavoro, la casa, la macchina.

I remember one day when I was knitting a sweater on the sofa at home and my daughter asked me, “Mom, are you happy?” I felt quite weird, and blurted out, “Yes, quite, and you, baby?” She said, “No. Not at all. Every day I have to go to school and do my homework.”

Children today work really hard. We adults work for 40 hours a week, but the kids are much more tired than we are because of all the time they have to spend studying. My daughter is in the second year of primary school. She gets up at 6am to catch the school bus, her first classes begin at 7:20 and they don’t end until 4:30pm.

Then she has an hour of meditation. After supper, at 6:30, she does her homework. Sometimes she doesn’t finish until 9 or 10pm. On weekends she has English classes on Friday evening, violin on Saturday morning, chess in the afternoon and drawing classes on Sunday morning.

She’s so young but she’s rarely assured of getting eight hours sleep.

I feed her as well as I can, but I’m worried she won’t grow. And I’m worried about her eyesight: She’s only in the second year, but already lots of her classmates are short-sighted.

It’s not because we are so demanding but because all the other kids are doing the same thing. We can’t afford to be left behind.

Extracurricular activities can improve your grades. To get a good job in China now you have to have an IVY graduation certificate.

To get an IVY graduation certificate your child has to get into a good high school. Teachers tell you at parents’ meetings how fierce the competition is. They tell you your kid’s future has to be secured now. Once one loop is loose, they say, all the other loops will loosen. Your kid’s primary school foundation has to be excellent. Sometimes you can try to change your ethnic background and claim to be a minority because that can add 10 points to a university entrance exam score.

I just wish sometimes that I could give my daughter a day off. I wish I could take her into the countryside, let her have a look at nature, relax. But I always smother that wish. Kids today can’t afford to relax. Their grades will determine their job, their house and their car. 六十一

I miei genitori hanno divorziato subito dopo la mia nascita. Mio fratello maggiore venne affidato a mia madre. E io a mio padre, che è un bastardo. Si fa le pere dagli anni 80, e si è fatto sbattere sette od otto volte in galera.

Anche mia madre la odio. Non avrebbe mai dovuto farmi nascere.

L’ho vista una volta sette anni fa, perché la nonna mi aveva trascinato a casa sua. Arrivato lì, mi misi a litigare con mio fratello.

Ho lasciato la scuola perché ho picchiato il direttore. L’ho mandato all’ospedale per tre settimane. Di solito, sono un tipo tranquillo, ma all’improvviso posso diventare violento. Una volta, un gruppo di teste di cazzo mi aspettava all’entrata di scuola. Avevo un coltello e l’ho ficcato nella gamba del capobanda. È mia nonna che mi ha cresciuto. È stata l’unica ad avermi dato affetto. Una volta rimasi fuori casa tutta la notte, a giocare ai videogiochi con un compagno di classe. Lei mi cercò per tutta la notte e, quando mi trovò, il mattino dopo, non mi sgridò neanche. Anzi, mi diede qualche soldo per comprarmi una merendina.

Quando ero in quarta elementare, una volta mi portò allo Zoo. Fu l’esperienza più bella della mia vita. La nonna è morta nel 2002 di cancro ai polmoni. Si mise ad urlare il mio nome in punto di morte. Mi manca tantissimo e la sogno sempre.

La nonna mi aveva lasciato il suo appartamento, ma mio padre lo ha venduto per comprarsi la droga. Prima pensavo di poter ricominciare una nuova vita in un’altra città. Ma, quando ho capito quanto poco riuscirei a guadagnare, mi sono scoraggiato.

Ormai, ho perso ogni speranza, mi limito ad aspettare. Ho riflettuto a varie possibilità per farla finita. Potrei fare qualcosa per attirare l’attenzione di tutto il mondo. Oppure potrei iniettarmi una di quelle sostanze per dare l’eutanasia agli animali domestici. Così morirei in silenzio, senza farlo sapere a nessuno.

My parents divorced just after I was born. My elder brother was given to my mother. I was given to my father. He’s a bastard.

He’s been a drug addict since the 1980s, and he’s been in prison seven or eight times.

I hate my mother, too. She shouldn’t have had me. I saw her once seven years ago when my grandma dragged me to see her. I fought with my elder brother in their apartment.

I left school because I hit the principal. He was in hospital for three weeks. Usually I’m quiet, but I can become violent. Once a group of assholes waited at the school entrance for me. I hid a knife on me and stuck it in the leader’s leg.

My grandma raised me. She has been the only one to give me love. Once I stayed out the whole night, playing videogames with my classmate. Grandma searched for me all night and when she found me the next morning, she didn’t scold me. Instead, she gave me money to buy snacks.

When I was in grade four, grandma took me to the zoo. It was the happiest experience I’ve ever had. She died in 2002 from lung cancer. She shouted my name when she was dying. I miss her very much and dream of her all the time.

Grandma left me her apartment and my father sold it to buy drugs.

I used to think about starting a new life in another city, but I got discouraged when I realized how little I could earn.

Now I’ve given up hoping, I just wait. I have planned some ways to die. One is to do something that gets attention from the entire world.

Another choice is to inject myself with a euthanasia drug for pets, to die quietly with no one knowing. 六十六

Altrimenti, nella vita, faccio lo stilista. Creo abiti per la gente famosa.

Da bambino facevo molti castelli in aria. Volevo diventare una superstar. Solo dopo mi resi conto che le celebrità sono un prodotto, un oggetto del desiderio per le masse. Perché è il sesso a far girare il mondo, e solo i pazzi o gli imbecilli credono nell’amore.

Da giovane, mi vedevo un futuro da donna. Ora, invece, ho le idee chiare, l’importante non è essere uomo o donna. Io sono il re delle puttane. Non fidarti mai delle puttane, mi raccomando. Abbiamo tutti bisogno di vendere qualcosa per renderci la vita più facile. C’è chi vende il proprio corpo, chi la propria arte. La vera disgrazia sarebbe quella di non avere niente da vendere.

Non m’importa delle critiche. Non ho amici. Viviamo in un mondo in cui ognuno si prende ciò di cui ha bisogno.

Qui non mi pagano per fare il mio spettacolo. Sono io che pago il pianista che mi accompagna. Io non canto per guadagnarmi da vivere. Ho semplicemente bisogno di coinvolgere tutti nel mio gioco. Non parteciperei mai a una mascherata né al carnevale, canto soltanto in questo piccolo bar perchè questo ambiente raccolto mi fa sentire una regina. Mi trasformo in una mega-strega, tutta in tiro con la parrucca. Attenzione, però, perché conosco un incantesimo per trasformarti in ranocchio, o in qualunque altro insetto. Mi basta un attimo per farmi beffe di tutto e tutti. Non mi sento svuotata alla fine di uno spettacolo. Mi fa piacere tornare alla realtà per una settimana, fino alla prossima esibizione.

I had some unrealistic dreams when I was a child. I wanted to be a superstar. Later I realized that celebrities are products for the masses to lust after, because sex drives everyone and only fools or crazies believe in love.

When I was young, I expected to become a girl. Now it’s clear to me: It’s not at all important to be a man or a woman. I am the king of whores. Please, never trust in whores. Everyone has to sell something in order to gain an easier life. Some sell their bodies, some sell their art. What a shame it would be to have nothing to sell.

Da piccola guardavo una serie televisiva su una hostess. Per questo sognavo di fare quel lavoro. A soli 13 anni ero già alta 1 metro e 73. La mamma m’iscrisse in una scuola di modelle per evitare che m’incurvassi. Fu la mia insegnante, poi, a iscrivermi a un concorso: arrivai seconda per la regione nord-orientale. Era il concorso delle modelle della Via della Seta. Le ragazze della scuola erano entusiaste di partecipare ai concorsi. Ci provavano tutte almeno una volta. Tutte le top model diventano famose con un concorso di bellezza, anche noi volevamo tentare la sorte. M’iscrissi a un altro concorso, ma mi eliminarono alla seconda selezione. Oggi la delusione è passata, visto che da allora ho partecipato a un mucchio di altri concorsi. Adesso sto studiando per prendere una doppia laurea in commercio internazionale e come indossatrice di moda. Se smetto di fare questo lavoro, potrò sempre seguire le orme di mia madre e diventare commercialista. C’è chi si meraviglia quando faccio questi discorsi. Forse è perché sono così fiera di lei che le voglio assomigliare.

Vengo da una città che si chiama Dalian. È una città costiera.

Quando i parenti venivano a trovarci, andavamo sempre al mare.

Ero quasi diventata una nuotatrice professionista. Poi mi è venuta la passione per i balli latino-americani, ma non trovavo mai un partner perché sono troppo alta.

Ero venuta a Pechino da adolescente per assistere alla festa della bandiera nazionale. Ma all’epoca Pechino mi era sembrata meglio.

Oggi l’aria è irrespirabile, c’è troppo traffico e inquinamento.

Non mi piace. Ho deciso di tornare a Dalian dopo la laurea. È una città più moderna e l’aria è molto più pulita.

When I was a little girl, I watched a TV series about a flight attendant. After that I started dreaming of becoming one. I was 173cm tall when I was just 13. Mom sent me to a modeling school to keep me from getting hunched. The coach there entered me into a competition, and I won second place in the northeast region in the Silk Road Model Contest. The kids at modeling school were all enthusiastic about contests. Everyone entered at least one. All supermodels become famous through beauty contests, so we all wanted to take our chances. I just entered another one but was rejected in the second round. But I don’t feel too bad about it, since I have gone through so many contests. I’m now studying for a double degree, modeling and foreign commerce. If I quit the modeling job, I’ll take up my mom’s career as an accountant. Some people are surprised when I tell them that. Maybe I’m so proud of her, I want to be like her.

My hometown is Dalian. It’s a coastal city. When relatives would come to visit, we often went to the seaside. I was nearly a professional swimmer. I learned Latin dance later, but I could never find a dancing partner because I’m too tall.

I came to Beijing when I was a teenager to see a national flag ceremony. I remember Beijing being better than it is now. It’s got a bad climate, too much traffic and the air is polluted. I don’t like it. I’ve decided to go back to Dalian after graduation. It’s more modern and the air is cleaner. 七十三

Mi alzo alle quattro del mattino per fare la fila all’entrata di uno studio cinematografico di Pechino, dove gli aiuto-registi vanno a cercare le comparse. Come primo ingaggio, ho fatto una particina in un cui impersonavo un detenuto, una comparsata sullo sfondo, senza neanche una battuta. Ho cercato di interpretare al meglio il personaggio, ma poi ho scoperto che mi avevano tagliato.

Al momento, posso avere fra le quattro e le dieci proposte di lavoro come comparsa in una settimana. Ma ho perso l’entusiasmo iniziale. Mi sono reso conto che interpreto personaggi insulsi, alla portata di tutti. Così lontani dalle mie aspirazioni.

Studiare non serve a niente. Mi piacciono i vestiti alla moda e gli accessori di tendenza. Per questo sono considerato lo “strano” della classe.

Mi piace collezionare i manifesti e le foto delle star. Compro le riviste, ritaglio le pagine e le appiccico al muro, o le metto nel mio album da collezione. So esattamente cosa piace mangiare a questo o a quel divo, e qual è il suo colore preferito. Mi interesso a ogni minimo particolare o banalità che li riguardi. Però, per vario tempo non sapevo neanche come si chiamasse il presidente della Cina.

Ma non sono l’unico. Molti giovani come me sono completamente disinteressati alla politica. Siamo troppo lontani da queste cose più grandi di noi. Per questo non ce ne importa niente.

Sogno spesso ad occhi aperti. Ecco uno dei miei sogni ricorrenti: c’è un camion che sta investendo un tipo e io mi lancio a salvarlo.

Guarda caso, quel tipo è amico di un famosissimo regista e, per ringraziarmi, me lo presenta. Ottengo così la parte del protagonista nel suo film e divento famoso. Ho questa tendenza a fuggire dalla realtà perché sono un idealista. Ho anche pensato di farmi monaco, e di rinunciare al mondo. Ma ci vuole una laurea per andare a fare il monaco in un tempio. Ho anche pensato di fuggire su un’isoletta, ma poi ho scoperto su Internet che tutte le isolette sono state affittate a ricchi stranieri.

Prima lavoravo in ufficio. Guadagnavo 2.000 yuan [US$250] al mese, il che non è male, ma dovevo tenere i capelli corti, vestirmi in giacca e cravatta e portare scarpe di cuoio. Non è una vita che fa per me! Voglio credere nel mio sogno e impegnarmi per fare l’attore e diventare qualcuno di speciale.

I get up at four in the morning to wait at the gate of a Beijing movie studio. That’s where the associate directors come to look for extras. In my first role I played a prisoner in the background, without lines. I gave a very serious performance, but later found my whole performance was cut.

At the moment I get four to ten chances a week to be an extra.

I’ve lost my initial excitement – I’ve realized that I always play roles that make no difference, that any one else could play. It’s so far away from my dream.

I don’t think I learn anything in college. I love to wear fashionable clothes and I like cutting-edge accessories, and that makes me the strange kid in class.

I love to collect posters and pictures of stars. I buy magazines, cut the pages out and stick them onto my wall, or put them into my collection album. I know very clearly what each star enjoys eating, which colors they prefer. I pay attention to all the trivia and details about them, but I didn’t know the name of the president for some time.

That’s not unique: Teenagers like me don’t care about politics.

We’re distanced from those big things, so we don’t pay attention.

I have daydreams. This is one: A big truck is about to run a guy over and I rush to save him. That guy is, fortunately, a friend of a very famous movie director. As a sort of reward, he recommends me to the director. I then play the leading role in his movie and make a big name for myself. Sometimes I want to escape from my situation because it’s too realistic for such an idealist. I’ve thought about becoming a monk, so I could forsake the world. But you need a degree to get a monk’s position in a temple. Then I thought about escaping to a small island, but I found on the Internet that all the small islands are rented by rich foreigners.

I once had a job as a clerk. I earned 2,000 yuan [US$250] a month, which isn’t bad, but I had to have my hair cut short and wear a suit and leather shoes every day. That shouldn’t be my life! I should insist on my dream of becoming an actor. I should insist on being remarkable.

Non c’erano taxi a Pechino prima del 1971, quando il presidente degli Stati Uniti Nixon venne in visita in Cina. Solo le persone molto anziane, debilitate o inferme, o gli invalidi e le donne incinte prendevano il taxi. E bisognava andare a una stazione. Non è come oggi che ce ne sono tanti dappertutto.

Da giovane ero alta e magra, e portavo le trecce lunghe fino ai fianchi. La mia generazione ne ha viste di tutti i colori, tranne la guerra. La società, in generale, sta avanzando in una buona direzione, ma c’è ancora troppo squilibrio tra ricchi e poveri. Prima lavoravo a maglia, ma ora ho problemi alla cervicale e preferisco passeggiare nel parco. Il parco del Tempio Celeste è una sorta di circolo naturale dove fare il pieno di ossigeno, l’abbonamento per un anno costa 54 yuan [US$6,75]. Mio marito si è ammalato nel 1994. L’intervento chirurgico è costato 18.000 yuan [US$ 2.250], che abbiamo dovuto sborsare interamente di tasca nostra. Mi hanno licenziata nel 1995. Mio figlio vende computer e guadagna 2.000 yuan [US$250] al mese. Ormai non devo più mantenerlo.

La sua fidanzata fa l’infermiera. E spesso ci prepara delle tisane.

Non è male avere un’infermiera come nuora.

Noi tre abbiamo vissuto in questo appartamento di 30 metri quadri per 20 anni. Avremmo dovuto comprare casa quando avevamo ancora qualche soldo. Ormai è diventato troppo caro. Ho sentito che vogliono demolire il nostro palazzo. È un quartiere abbastanza centrale e non penso che costruiranno un grattacielo.

Probabilmente al suo posto sorgerà un edificio tradizionale, con il cortile quadrangolare interno, per turisti e stranieri. Spero che il governo ci aiuterà a trovare un altro appartamento. Non abbiamo bisogno di soldi, ci serve soltanto una casa. Con l’indennizzo che ci offriranno non riusciremo mai a comprare qualcosa nel quartiere. Vogliono mandarci a vivere in periferia. Da lì ci vuole un’ora per arrivare in città. Se ci succede qualcosa, sarà troppo tardi anche con l’ambulanza.

Yang Jinhui, 53, retired taxi driver

There were no taxis in Beijing before 1971, when President Nixon of the USA visited China. Then the central government ruled out rickshaws and imported some taxicabs, to give the city a facelift. Women drivers were few at the time, as well as taxicabs. I started to drive a taxi when I was 18. Driving a taxi was then a very good job with a relatively high salary. In those days the rate was 20 fen [US$0.025] a kilometer. Only people who were old, weak, disabled, ill or pregnant would take taxis. And they had to go to the taxi stations. It’s not like now, when cabs are everywhere.

I was tall and slim when I was a young girl, with long hair braided down to my hips. People of my generation have gone through everything except war. Society generally is heading in quite a good direction, but it’s unbalanced between rich and poor. I used to knit, but now I have a bad neck, so I walk in the park. The Heaven Temple Park is a natural oxygen club, you have to pay 54 yuan [US$6.75] for an annual ticket. In 1994 my husband fell ill. His heart surgery cost 18,000 yuan [US$2,250] that we had to pay out of our own pocket.

I was laid off in 1995. My son sells computers and earns 2,000 yuan [US$250] a month. I don’t have to support him any more.

His girlfriend is a nurse. She makes infusions for us every so often.

It’s not bad to have a nurse as a daughter-in-law.

The three of us lived in this apartment for 20 years. It’s 30 square meters. I wish I’d bought an apartment when we had some money.

Now it’s too expensive. I’ve heard that the building we live in will be pulled down. It’s close to downtown and they won’t be building high-rises, but probably quadrangle buildings for foreigners. I hope the government will help us with an apartment. We don’t need money, just an apartment. The relocation compensation won’t buy you anything around this area. They want to move us to the suburbs. From there, it takes an hour to get into town. If we suddenly got sick, it would be too late even with an ambulance.

La prima lavora per una ditta straniera e guadagna 4.000 yuan [US$500] al mese. La più piccola fa l’insegnante di educazione fisica alla scuola di Jingxi, dove insegna a nuotare ai bambini stranieri. Guadagna 1.000 yuan [US$125] l’ora. Possiedono tutte e due una casa e un’automobile. La mia famiglia adesso è divisa in due. Da una parte le mie figlie, che sono le borghesi al soldo della “cricca dei diavoli stranieri”. Dall’altra io e mia moglie, i proletari.

Iscrissi la mia seconda figlia a scuola di nuoto quando aveva appena 6 anni, perché in quel modo avrebbe avuto una tenuta sportiva e cioccolato e formaggio gratis. E poi pensavo che facendo sport agonistico avrebbe avuto probabilmente un futuro migliore. Più tardi fu selezionata dalla Squadra giovanile di nuoto di Pechino, e il governo le versava un lauto stipendio.

Ho una terribile nostalgia dei tempi di Mao. La gente all’epoca conduceva una vita semplice e più sincera, in comunione con gli altri. Ora le cose sono molto diverse. Oggi tutti pensano ai soldi.

Vengo spesso a fare il bagno in questi bagni pubblici. I bagni pubblici, un tempo, erano molto diffusi. Oggi, invece, hanno tutti un grande appartamento con la vasca da bagno. Soltanto gli anziani continuano a frequentarli. Sono ancora molto economici e per noi è un’abitudine. E poi, comunque, non veniamo soltanto per fare il bagno. Io vengo anche per rivedere un po’ di vecchi amici, come gli inservienti che lavano la schiena ai clienti.

I worked in the Beijing Bureau of Environmental Sanitation, and my wife is still working at the General Knitting Mill. My retirement pay is enough for me to live off. I have two daughters. The elder works for a foreign company and earns 4,000 yuan [US$500] a month. The younger is a coach at Jingxi school, teaching foreign children to swim. She earns 1,000 yuan [US$125] an hour.

They both own a house and a car. My family is now in two parts.

My daughters are bourgeois. They work for “the party of foreign devils.” My wife and I are the proletariat.

When she was only six I sent my second daughter to a swimming school where she could get sports dresses, chocolate and cheese for free. Also I thought a sportswoman would probably have a bright future. Later she was selected for the Beijing Juvenile Swimming Team and had a generous stipend from the government.

I miss the [former Chairman] Mao Zedong era badly. People of that time lived a simple life and were more sincere with each other. Now things are quite different. All everybody thinks of is money. Even doctors and policemen are no exception.

I often take baths in this public bathhouse. Public bathhouses used to be very common, but now everyone has spacious apartments with bathrooms. Only the elderly still come to public bathhouses.

But it’s still very cheap and we are used to it. Anyway we don’t just come for a bath. I come to meet old friends, including the workers who rub customers’ backs. 八十

Sono arrivato a Pechino dalla campagna nel 1997, l’anno in cui Hong Kong fu restituita alla Cina. E, da allora, faccio il muratore.

Era dai tempi della scuola che sognavo di venire qui. Vedevo Pechino al telegiornale e mi sembrava un posto fantastico.

Ho partecipato alla costruzione di 10 grattacieli a Pechino, fra cui il palazzo Yue Tan e la banca per lo sviluppo del Guangdong. Ora sto lavorando all’edificio che diventerà il teatro dell’Opera di Pechino. Ho sentito che i lavoratori edili potranno vedere gratis gli spettacoli quando aprirà il teatro.

Dopo le Olimpiadi, conto di tornare a vivere in campagna, perché secondo me ci saranno meno progetti di nuovi edifici e sarò costretto a tornarmene a casa. Non ho studiato e, a Pechino, è impossibile trovare un buon lavoro senza un diploma. Mi piacerebbe tornare al mio villaggio e mandare avanti una fattoria, dove allevare polli e maiali. Spero che mio figlio possa andare all’università e diventare medico. È un lavoro stabile.

La cosa più importante per me adesso è la sicurezza sul lavoro. Ho visto un uomo della mia squadra cadere dall’undicesimo piano.

Questo tipo d’incidenti succede ogni anno e mi rende nervoso.

I came to Beijing from the countryside in 1997, the year Hong Kong was given back to China. I’ve worked in construction since then. I’d wanted to come here since I was at school. I’d see Beijing on the news, and I thought it looked great.

I’ve taken part in the construction of 10 skyscrapers in Beijing, including Yue Tan Mansion and the Guangdong Development Bank. Now I’m working on the building, which will be the Beijing opera theater. I’ve heard that construction workers will be able to see shows for free when it opens.

I used to earn 30 to 40 yuan [US$4 to 5] a day. But after the new labor laws came into effect, I earned double. Now I’m the foreman of my little team. I’m proud of my status.

My wish is to earn enough money so that when I leave Beijing I can build a two-story house for my family in our village. It will have three rooms on each floor. I expect it will cost 60,000 yuan [US$7,500]. I know my boss spent 200,000 yuan [US$25,000] building a house for his family and 500,000 yuan [US$62,500] to decorate it. But I could never compete with him.

I have another wish – to have my wife and sons come to Beijing for the Olympics. I hope the government will arrange for construction workers to watch some games free of charge, since we are contributing to the city. The tickets are too expensive for us.

I plan to go back to the countryside after the Olympics. I think there will be fewer projects to build then, and I should go back home. I don’t have much education, and it’s impossible to find a good job in Beijing without a diploma. I would like to go back to the village to run a farm, to raise pigs and chickens. I hope my son can go to the university and become a doctor. It’s a steady job.

What I have to watch out for now is my safety at work. I have seen a worker on the team fall from 11 stories up. Such accidents happen every year. It makes us nervous. 八十四

Vengo dalla Mongolia centrale. Ho vissuto nelle praterie fino all’età di 10 anni. Nel 1989 mi sono stufato di andare a scuola e me ne sono andato via di casa. All’epoca andavo pazzo per i film di cowboy, così decisi di andare nella provincia di Xin Jiang, dove il paesaggio ricorda un po’ il Far West. Rimasi a bazzicare lì per due anni, prima di tornarmene in Mongolia. In seguito, ho lavorato come cassiere in una banca e passavo le mie giornate a contare i soldi. In quattro anni ho contato una tale quantità di denaro che alla fine non ce la facevo più. Volevo rifarmi una nuova vita. Decisi quindi di iscrivermi al corso avanzato di fotografia dell’Istituto Nazionale. Da allora i miei valori sono cambiati e guardo alla vita da una nuova prospettiva.

Adoro i Si He Yuan di Pechino [lo stile architettonico delle tradizionali case pechinesi, raccolte intorno a un cortile quadrato]. Mi piace guardare la gente che pianta i fiori. Mi piace restare qui tutta la giornata ed esco di rado. A volte, quando prendo l’autobus, mi chiedo chi abiti in quel mucchio di palazzoni che mi scorrono davanti agli occhi. Io non lascerò mai il mio Si He Yuan. È il motivo per cui resto a Pechino. Se un giorno dovessero decidere di demolire questo hutong, me ne andrei via da questa città.

La vera Pechino sta scomparendo a vista d’occhio. Per me, la vera Pechino è quella che si trova dentro il secondo raccordo anulare interno. Fuori di lì, sembra di stare in un posto qualunque.

I come from Inner Mongolia. I lived in the grasslands until I was 10. In 1989 I got tired of school and left home. At that time I was crazy about cowboy films so I went to Xin Jiang province where the landscape looks similar to the Wild West. I spent two years there, knocking about, then moved back to Inner Mongolia. I worked later as a cashier in a bank and counted money every day.

I counted endless money for four years until I couldn’t stand it anymore. I wanted to be reborn. So I applied to the advanced photography class at the National College. Since then I’ve looked at my life from a new perspective, and my values have changed.

I love Beijing’s Si He Yuan [the traditional Beijing way of living, inside a compound with houses around a courtyard]. I like to watch people plant flowers. I like to watch ordinary lives. I own a café now, as well as being a freelance photographer. My café looks like an ordinary family courtyard. I enjoy staying inside here all day and I rarely go out. Sometimes I take the bus and wonder about who is living inside the masses of new tall buildings that I pass. I will never leave my Si HeYuan. It’s my reason for staying in Beijing. If this hutong is to be demolished someday, then I will leave Beijing.

The real Beijing is becoming smaller and smaller. For me, the real Beijing is inside the second inner ring road. Outside it, it could be anywhere.

Il mio cane si chiama Piggy. È un regalo di mia figlia. È uno XiShi purosangue. Non mi sono mai piaciuti gli animali da compagnia.

Ho sempre pensato che fossero sporchi, ma Piggy è intelligentissimo. Ha saputo comportarsi bene, sin dall’inizio, per questo l’ho accettato subito e ho imparato a volergli bene. Lo abbiamo chiamato Piggy nella speranza che resti sempre forte come un maiale.

Mi alzo alle 5 per portarlo a spasso e poi lo riporto fuori la sera, alle 7. Camminiamo in media 7 ore al giorno. A volte mio marito è geloso di tutto il tempo che trascorriamo insieme.

Piggy sorride quando è felice, con gli angoli della bocca puntati all’insù, e piange quando è preoccupato, triste o impaurito. Un giorno lo avevo messo sul davanzale perché stavo pulendo per terra. Ma, una volta finito, mi ero scordata di rimetterlo giù. Lo trovai dopo sul davanzale che piangeva sommessamente in preda alla disperazione. Aveva paura di saltare.

A volte, quando cerca di zompare sul divano ma non ce la fa, fa finta di stiracchiarsi. Ci tiene molto alla sua reputazione.

Sa come prendersi cura di me. Una volta che ero cascata dalle scale e mi ero ferita alla testa, era così preoccupato che si è messo a strofinarsi contro le mie gambe abbaiando.

Piggy ha un mucchio di vestitini e accessori. Gli piace essere sempre a posto. Mia figlia gli ha comprato degli abitini costosissimi che vengono da Hong Kong. My dog’s name is Piggy. He was a present from my daughter.

He’s a pureblood XiShi. I never liked pets, I thought they were dirty, but Piggy is clever. He had good habits from the start, so I accepted him quickly and I love him. We gave him the name Piggy in hopes that he’d be as strong as a pig.

I get up at 5am to walk him and take him out again at 7 o’ clock in the evening. On average I walk him seven hours per day. Sometimes my husband is jealous of all the time I spend with Piggy.

Piggy smiles when he feels happy, with the corners of his mouth pointing upward, and he cries when he’s worried, scared or sad.

One day I put him on the windowsill while I cleaned the floor and forgot to take him down when I finished. I found him crying terribly but quietly on the sill. He was afraid to jump down.

Sometimes he tries to jump onto the sofa, doesn’t make it, and then pretends to be stretching instead. He’s sensitive about his reputation.

He knows how to take care of me. Once I fell down the stairs and hurt my head. He was quite worried, rubbing my legs and barking.

Piggy has many clothes and accessories; he loves to have a neat appearance. My daughter bought him expensive pet clothes from Hong Kong. They cost more than my clothes. I make clothes for him too, using fine material like pure silk or wool. Piggy loves bright colors like red or pink. He loves perfume, too.

He hasn’t been neutered, because we respect his rights. He loves beautiful ladies. Once, a pretty girl passed by our car. Piggy chased her and wagged his tail. This made the girl happy.

Piggy costs 500 yuan [US$62] per month. He eats a good brand of pet food, AiYinSi, which is meat with special pet seasoning. He has an appointment every week at the beauty salon. He has a registered permanent residence card for pets, which costs 1,500 yuan [US$128] the first year, and 1,000 yuan [US$192] per year afterwards. Piggy is really like a person. He’s a member of the family.

We used to travel a lot, but now we don’t because Piggy doesn’t like flying. When we go on holiday, we drive. But if we can’t find a pet beauty salon while we’re on holiday, we come back to Beijing early. 九十六

You can’t miss the Tian Zi (Children of the Cosmos) hotel. Located in east Beijing, where emperors of old would stay when they were touring their domains, the giant building is supposed to represent the three Chinese gods of happiness, wealth and long life. To enter into the bellies of the gods, go through the glass doors in the left foot of the God of Long Life or through the right foot of the God of Wealth. The fruit in the God of Long Life’s hand contains the Long Life Peach Suite, which is popular with Beijing residents as a venue for birthday parties.

The building’s particular aesthetic has the architecture world divided. “At least it’s an original idea,” said one participant in an online architectural forum. “And it attracts customers.” Another was less forgiving. “You see this hotel,” he wrote, “and at first you are shocked. But I don’t think that’s practical. And I miss my hometown. The scenery is so beautiful, and my close friends are all there. Living in Beijing makes me nervous and I don’t feel like I belong here.

The boy you see in the photo is one of my old friends, and the girl is his fiancée. They are so beautiful that people often mistake them for Hollywood movie stars. You can see how proud I am of them. This is our cat Guli, who came from nowhere. We took him in and he must have sensed our kindness and stayed. I want to take him back home with me, but Xingjiang is too far away.

Tanto basta per comunicare il prezzo. A volte le spese di trasporto superano il costo della scultura. La manodopera e le materie prime sono molto più economiche in Cina.

Our products are handmade, using the best white stone from Si Chuang. You lose detail with machine-made sculptures. It takes one month for a worker to finish a one-figure sculpture. We’ve made deals with clients from all over the world.

If our clients don’t bring translators, we use counting machines to communicate; it’s enough just to convey the price. Sometimes shipping charges cost more than the sculpture. The labor and materials are much cheaper in China than abroad.

We have a factory with 20 employees in Hebei, and we sell products in Beijing. We order sculptures from the USA that we use as models for learning how to sculpt body shapes.

We started the business 12 years ago when we had just married.

We didn’t have much money at the time. We noticed a few people in the village were doing well in the sculpture business, so we came to Beijing to do research. Back then, the biggest handicraft market, Pan Jiayuan, didn’t exist. It was just a field of piles of garbage. That’s where we started our business, with a stall next to the rejected bricks pile. To attract customers, we first sold at lower than cost, then gradually raised prices.

We’re in Beijing three days every week selling our products, so we rent an apartment here. We have two teenage sons at home in the village. Education is better here, but we don’t have time to take care of them.

Our ambition is to make the business grow as much as possible.

Earning and saving money is the truest way to love our children.

Competition now is fierce – we want to give them easier lives.

Also, ordinary people don’t really have pensions or medical insurance, so we must try our best to earn money at this age.

We earn several million yuan [several tens of thousand US dollars] a year now. We never expected to be so successful. We built the largest house in our village. We could afford to make a trip to the USA for example, but we won’t. We don’t speak their language and that would embarrass us.

Gao Xiao Hutong is the narrowest hutong in Beijing. At some points the hutong is only 65 cm wide, allowing only one person to pass at one time.

Nan Luo Gu Xiang is a small, lively Beijing street dating from the Yuan dynasty (1267). It currently hosts many cafés that are second homes to young artists and expatriates. Locals have named it “Centipede Street” because it is the starting point for eight hutongs, or lanes.

La scena musicale cinese è in pieno boom. Da Bai Tang Guan, a Pechino, potrai scovare finalmente il Cd di quella fantomatica band cinese che hai sentito a Berlino o a Brooklyn, o di quel gruppo che hai scoperto su un blog. Bai Tang Guan è il migliore negozio di musica underground in città.

Gli studenti di lingue saranno entusiasti di parlare con te e imparare la tua lingua, e in cambio ti faranno conoscere la “vera” vita degli abitanti di Pechino. L’università organizza anche i migliori corsi di lingua cinese per stranieri in città.

Quello delle “pappe” è un vero e proprio universo culinario in Cina, una tradizione ricca e complessa. A Pechino la scelta è enorme, potrai trovarne una adatta ad ogni occasione. La pappa di biancospino è ottima per dimagrire, quella di carote o di aglio protegge il cuore, la minestra di foglie di loto aiuta ad abbassare la pressione, mentre la zuppa di zenzero cura il raffreddore e quella di datteri cinesi combatte l’insonnia. L’Ente nazionale del Turismo chiede alle agenzie di viaggio di istruire e consigliare i turisti cinesi all’estero per evitare i comportamenti maleducati. I giornali del sud-est asiatico e della Cina riportano spesso aneddoti di turisti cinesi che si rifiutano di scendere da un aereo per protestare contro i ritardi, che abbandonano i rifiuti nei parchi o sputano nelle camere d’albergo.

A Pechino ci sono circa 4.000 bagni pubblici. I vespasiani sono un servizio indispensabile nelle parti più antiche della città, dove molte case non hanno il gabinetto. La maggior parte dei bagni pubblici erano spesso fetidi e fatiscenti, così il comune, nel 2002, ha deciso di stanziare un fondo annuo di 100 milioni di yuan per rimodernare le latrine. Oggi i gabinetti pubblici sono classificati per categorie con un sistema simile a quello degli alberghi. I migliori vespasiani sono quelli a cinque stelle.

Non dimenticare la carta igienica!

Nel 2005 Pechino era la città più inquinata del mondo (con circa 400.000 decessi l’anno legati all’inquinamento). Quando l’indice di inquinamento atmosferico raggiunge il livello 3, i bambini e gli anziani diventano particolarmente vulnerabili. Quando si raggiunge il livello 7, si consiglia all’intera popolazione di non uscire di casa. Un depuratore dell’aria in casa può essere utile. La mascherina di carta, invece, non serve a niente, dato che protegge i polmoni da particolati e fuliggine, ma non dai gas inquinanti più tossici. L’Ente per la Tutela dell’Ambiente di Pechino pubblica un bollettino quotidiano con l’indice d’inquinamento atmosferico del giorno precedente, basta consultare il loro sito www.bjepb.gov.cn

Il maggiore parco cittadino, il parco della Foresta olimpica, aprirà alla fine del 2007. Con una superficie di 680 ettari, il doppio del Central Park di New York, ospiterà al suo interno un lago artificiale e una montagna, oltre a un centro congressi, negozi e ristoranti.
