Abbiamo riflettuto molto sul concetto di frontiera. Ad esempio: cosa significa, esattamente, “generazione teenager”? Il confine 13-19 anni non racchiude l’intero fenomeno, limitandosi a una definizione temporale di quella che è fondamentalmente un’esperienza sociale.

La mancanza di contorni precisi interessa molti aspetti della vita attuale e Colors si è avventurato inevitabilmente verso un mondo in cui i contenuti non sono più compresi entro i confini di un’unica dimensione.

Oggi la nostra redazione è popolata di individui per cui la comunicazione pura è poesia e una storia non è fatta di testi e immagini. Sono loro ad aver voluto quel simbolo grafico sulla destra, che rende l’esperienza della “lettura” di questo numero incompleta finché non metterai queste pagine di fronte alla tua webcam e scoprirai cosa succede su colorsmagazine.com.

Fra le varie sorprese, potrai vedere skater in azione, una rasatura a zero e un festival musicale.

Proprio come gli adolescenti di questo numero, che da semplici «ragazzi» o «ragazze» sono diventati esseri umani unici (ogni trasformazione il risultato di esperienze individuali molto personali), anche Colors fa parte della generazione teenager (18 anni appena compiuti!) ed è passato dalla vita di semplice rivista su carta a un processo collettivo per celebrare la diversità in tutto il mondo.

Una tradizionale rivista riempie le proprie pagine con il lavoro di fotografi e scrittori ingaggiati per produrre una storia scelta da un capo redattore. Stiamo cercando di cambiare radicalmente formula, lanciando un esperimento su colorsmagazine.com: un nuovo laboratorio globale di idee in cui tutti possono partecipare al processo editoriale.

Secondo noi un punk a Mogadiscio dovrebbe avere le stesse chance di farsi pubblicare una foto su questa rivista di un famoso fotografo sbarcato in aereo da Londra. E sta già funzionando.

Negli ultimi mesi, perfetti sconosciuti dai quattro angoli del pianeta hanno riversato schizzi, foto e le loro ineffabili chimere sulla nostra piattaforma web. è questa la base delle storie di vita dei teenager che hai di fronte. We’ve been thinking a lot about frontiers. For example: what, exactly, does ‘the teen years’ mean? The 13 to 19 boundaries just don’t cut it, limiting us to a time-specific definition of what is essentially a social experience.

The lack of precise limits is true for a lot of things these days, and Colors has started down that inevitable path, moving towards a world in which content is no longer confined to one platform.

Our offices are now inhabited by those for whom a clean code is poetry and a story does not come in the form of text and images.

They are responsible for the graphic symbol you see on your right, which renders the experience of ‘reading’ this issue incomplete until you place its pages in front of a webcam and see what happens at colorsmagazine.com. Among the surprises, you’ll be able to watch skaters in action, the shaving of a head and a major music festival.

Just as the teenagers inside this issue moved from “boys” or “girls” into unique human beings (each transformation a result of very personal experiences), Colors is also going through the teen years (we’ve just turned 18!) and has moved from its life as just a print magazine to being a collective process to celebrate diversity around the world.

Traditional magazines fill their pages with photographers and writers hired to produce a story predetermined by editors.

We are trying to radically alter this formula and have begun an experiment at colorsmagazine.com, a new global laboratory of ideas in which anyone can directly participate in the magazine’s editorial process.

We believe that a punk in Mogadishu should have just as good a shot at getting their snapshots into this magazine as some famous photographer flying in from London. It’s already working.

Over the last few months, previously unknown folks from the far corners of the earth have been pumping their sketches, snapshots and elusive daydreams into the new web platform.

These make up the base of the stories on teenage life which you have in front of you. So stop thinking of yourself as just a reader and us as just editors and help us make colorsmagazine.com into a genuinely collective, open source framework for creative conspiracy.

We met in a summer camp when we were five, have been best friends ever since and have only had two or three fights all this time. We go to the same school, see each other every day and go out every weekend. All our first times were together because whenever I’m about to do something I call him or he calls me. But now we are about to go in different directions. When we finish high school next year we’ll each move to different cities to study. Of course we’ll miss each other. But it’s gonna be great and we’ll have a lot of new experiences to share with each other.

E in tutto questo tempo abbiamo litigato solo due o tre volte. Andiamo alla stessa scuola, ci vediamo ogni giorno e il weekend usciamo sempre insieme. Abbiamo condiviso tutte le nostre “prime volte” perché quando sto sul punto di fare qualcosa lo chiamo sempre, e viceversa. Ma ora le nostre strade si dividono. Il prossimo anno, finita la scuola, ci trasferiremo ognuno in una città diversa per continuare gli studi.

Ovvio, sentiremo la mancanza. Ma sarà bellissimo e avremo un mucchio di nuove esperienze da raccontarci.

Quando voglio uscire devo mettere l’hijab e coprirmi le gambe.

Se la polizia religiosa scopre che non sei vestita secondo i canoni, ti arrestano, devi pagare una multa e giurare per iscritto che non ti vestirai mai più in quel modo. Sono fortunata perché non mi hanno mai arrestata. Non ci sono locali notturni in Iran, allora facciamo delle feste con gli amici in cui possiamo vestirci come ci pare e piace. I miei lo sanno, ma ho amici che non parlano con i loro genitori e allora dicono «Vado a casa di Negin» per poi andare a una festa o uscire con il fidanzato. Potrà sembrare strano, ma questo è il modo in cui sono cresciuta... Non ho altri esempi.

If the religious police find you dressed not according to their standards they will arrest you, you’ll have to pay a fine and swear in writing that you’ll never dress like that again. I am lucky because I’ve never been arrested. We don’t have nightclubs in Iran, so my friends and I organize parties where we can dress however we like. My parents know but I have friends who can’t talk to their parents so they tell them “I’m going to Negin’s home” and then go to a party or out with their boyfriend. I know it might seem weird but this is the way I grew up... I know no other way of living.

Farmi il look era impossibile, perché avevo 12 anni e i vestiti me li comprava ancora mia madre. Mi rinchiudevo in camera a rimuginare pensieri cupi come la scarificazione e roba simile. Poi ho ripetuto un anno a scuola, mi sono fatta più amici e ho imparato piano piano ad avere una visione più ottimista. Ho anche cambiato gusti musicali, dal rock/metal al pop. Ora faccio l’insegnante di danza elettronica.

Mi piacciono i capi firmati e mettermi in tiro, sexy. Molte ragazze mi considerano una troia, perché ho le extension bionde e i mini-short.

Ma è tutta invidia, perché sono meno carine di me e non saranno mai alla mia altezza. Fra l’altro hanno quasi tutte i capelli castani...

I couldn’t have the look because I was 12 and my mother was still the one buying my clothes. I was locked in my bedroom and had dark thoughts like scarification and all that stuff. But then I repeated a year at school, made more friends and slowly developed a more positive outlook. I also changed my musical tastes from rock/metal to commercial pop. Now I’m an electronic dance teacher. I love designer clothes and sexy dress up. Many girls see me as a slut because I wear blond extensions and tiny shorts.

They are just less beautiful, jealous girls who can’t reach my level.

I used to hang out with the skater crowd so I was far more into sneakers, loose t-shirts, hip hop and things like that. I also used to be a hoarder, collecting weird things like broken television sets on the streets. For a while I even tried graffiti but I could never get messy enough. Everything I did came out like architectural drawings. It’s just the way I am. I enjoy wearing a suit, for example. It’s not that I do it all the time but I like it when it’s right for the occasion... Sharp suit, suspenders, the slim tie... I guess I’m a little influenced by Quentin Tarantino’s films. I’m producing my own film with friends from school. It’s set in a town for outlaws. Everyone is a teenager since we couldn’t find anyone else to act in it.

Sono passato da Run-d.m.c. a Frank Sinatra Prima bazzicavo una banda di skater ed ero fissato con le sneaker, le magliette extra-large, l’hip hop e roba simile. E raccattavo tutto quello che trovavo in giro, roba strana, tipo televisori rotti. Ho provato anche a fare graffiti ma non erano mai abbastanza incasinati. Tutto quello che facevo sembrava un disegno accademico. È semplicemente il mio modo di essere. Mi piace vestirmi in giacca e cravatta, ad esempio.

Non che lo faccia sempre, ma mi piace quando se ne presenta l’occasione... Un completo elegante, le bretelle, la cravatta fina... Devo essermi fatto influenzare dai film di Tarantino. Sto producendo un film con gli amici a scuola. È ambientato in una città di fuorilegge. I personaggi sono tutti adolescenti perché non riuscivamo a trovare nessun altro disposto a recitare nel film.

My mom wasn’t shocked or anything, but she doesn’t see me dressed up that often. One of my friends told his family when he was 16 and the next morning all his stuff was packed and waiting at the door. His parents haven’t spoken to him since. Not every Furry wears a suit. Only the Fursuiters. Then there are the Ferals and the Plushies and the Avians. It’s complex. We know some people find it weird, but it’s not like one can be ashamed of who they are.

That friend of mine who had to move out of his house, for example, at least now he gets to sleep in his suit whenever he wants.

Mia mamma non era scioccata o altro, ma non mi vede spesso conciato in questo modo. I like the adrenalin rush better than qualifying. For me, sports is movement, action, excitement. I’m a professional swimmer, but I’m more into extreme sports these days. Especially sky diving.

It’s awesome: feels like slamming five Red Bulls all at once.

Everything becomes like a movie. You only snap back to the real world after you’ve opened your ‘chute. I do all of this with my girlfriend, who’s even crazier than I am!

Ho suonato la chitarra ogni giorno negli ultimi cinque anni. Ho la mia band e faccio parte della scena Heavy Metal di Helsinki, voglio diventare un musicista professionista e magari firmare un contratto discografico o roba simile. So che non sarò mai famoso come gli Iron Maiden, impossibile, sono troppo bravi! Ma per lo meno vorrei essere come Bruce Dickinson. È il tipo più fico che esiste!

I was eight and watching a hockey game with my dad when I heard that song “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple. The composition, the melody, the arrangement... I remember thinking it was the greatest thing I’d ever heard. For the last five years, I’ve played the guitar every single day. I have my own band, I move in Helsinki’s heavy metal scene and I wanna become a professional musician, maybe get a record deal or something like that. I know I won’t be as famous as Iron Maiden, their skills are unreachable! But I’d at least like to look like Bruce Dickinson. He’s the most attractive man alive!

Da piccolo disegnavo tantissimo, ogni giorno. L’amore per l’arte ha fortemente influenzato la scelta di fare il body builder. Ho sempre ammirato le statue dell’antica Grecia e le loro forme. Se non facessi body building probabilmente riprenderei a disegnare. Ma questa è una strada senza ritorno. Il body building è una passione, deve essere lo scopo della tua vita.

When I was younger I used to draw pretty much every day and my love of art heavily influenced my decision to become a bodybuilder.

I’ve always enjoyed statues from Ancient Greece and marveled at the way their bodies were shaped. If I weren’t a bodybuilder I’d probably go back to drawing. But there is no going back. Bodybuilding is a lifetime commitment, something one must make the goal of life.

I come from a tiny town in the Lake District and I’m a first year fashion student at Salford University in Manchester. Moving to a big city like Manchester has been quite different. There is so much to do here. There is partying every night, it’s crazy. We usually start drinking in the dorms then move to the alternative places like the Indie Bar. I love the shopping too. I don’t know how I managed before with the lack of shops in the Lake District. There are difficulties of course. Like it’s not very easy to meet people here. Back in my village, everyone knew each other. We were a very tightly knit group of friends. I miss my home when in the city, and I miss the city when I’m home.

Non so come facessi prima nel Lake District dove quasi non ci sono negozi. Certo, ci sono anche delle difficoltà. Cioè, non è molto facile conoscere gente qui. Nel mio villaggio ci conoscevamo tutti. Eravamo un gruppo di amici molto uniti. Quando sono in città mi manca casa, e quando sono a casa mi manca la città.

Ho iniziato danza classica a 14 anni. E non perché conoscessi qualcuno che ballava, ma soltanto perché mi piaceva. Sogno di fare il ballerino professionista. Prima guardavo un sacco di video delle compagnie più famose su YouTube, per ripetere i passi. Un giorno trovai un video di due tipi che ballavano tecktonik. Pensai che erano pazzi, ma che mi piacevano e che volevo imparare a ballare come loro. Nel mio quartiere erano tutti allibiti, perché sperimentavo i movimenti più strani. Una volta una vecchina chiese a mia madre se fossi “posseduto” o altro.

I started dancing ballet when I was 14. It wasn’t because anyone around me danced, I just really liked it. My dream was to be a professional dancer so I used to watch loads of YouTube videos of the famous companies. One day I found a video of these two guys dancing tecktonik. I thought they were crazy, loved it and decided that’s how I wanted to dance. People in my neighborhood thought it was very strange as I started experimenting with all kinds of new movements. One old lady asked my mother whether I was “possessed” or something.

Some people think I’m gay, but it’s ok. I’ve always enjoyed playing with the way I dress. When I was a kid, I used to wear my father’s clothes. But he was killed when I was 13. Two boys came up, pulled out knives and stabbed him. It was incredibly traumatic for me.

I started smoking drugs and shoplifting. Then, one day, a guy came to me and said I should be one of the Smarteez. Any color, we wear it: bright clothes, blue tekkies, green sunglasses, suit jackets and old clothes that look smart. It motivates me when people laugh and tell me I’m wearing crazy things. I want to be different and my girlfriend likes it when I wear a skirt.

It was difficult explaining it to my parents. When they found out, they wanted to take me to a psychiatrist. I realized I didn’t have to do extreme stuff in front of them like wearing fake teeth, but I’m always dressed as a vampire. The only time I dress like a normal person is during the summer. I grew up in a place where if a boy let his hair grow a little bit - but, I mean, a little bit - people would think he’s weird. It was only after we moved to Sao Paulo three years ago that I could let it grow. My parents didn’t particularly like it but they’ve accepted it. I have huge ears, so the hair hides it. When he realized that the other driver was his girlfriend he started panicking! He was like ‘Ahaaaa I knew it was you guys... I was just joking’, but we all knew he was lying! I hate to be alone so I always surround myself with friends... We smoke cigarettes, chat and go out... I have never been outside Iran but I hope to someday go on a wonderful holiday somewhere.

When we came home we would find Facebook minimized on the computer. Mom was on Facebook every single day. My brother didn’t believe me but because I am Facebook friends with her I saw some very weird comments on her page. There were strange comments from one particular guy who had blocked me from being able to view his profile. In the end this was one of the reasons my parents got divorced.

Ora siamo tante, una ventina solo qui a Valenza. Organizziamo attività di ogni tipo, come prendere il tè o fare un picnic lungo il fiume, tutte vestite da Lolitas. La cosa più difficile è trovare l’abbigliamento giusto. I vestiti da Lolita vengono tutti dal Giappone e sono marche molto care, per questo ho imparato a cucirmi gli abiti da sola. Essere una Lolita vuol dire vivere in un mondo magico di fantasia. Vogliamo crescere, ma conservando la nostra innocenza di bambine.

After a while, I found another two from Barcelona and now there are many more, including 20 of us here in Valencia. All’entrata ci sono gli insegnanti con le forbici che ci controllano le uniformi e la lunghezza dei capelli. Misurano ogni particolare con un righello. I ragazzi non possono raparsi a zero né avere i capelli lunghi più di due centimetri. Le ragazze non possono avere i capelli lunghi più di tre centimetri sotto le orecchie. Un giorno avevo i capelli lunghi 3,1 cm e la prof ha preso le forbici e me li ha tagliati. Ma non si è limitata a spuntarmeli di 0,1 cm. Per punizione me li ha tagliati ancora più corti del regolamento. Tagliano anche la divisa se la giudicano troppo corta, così te ne devi comprare una nuova. Una volta dentro scuola ci vestiamo di nuovo come piace a noi, personalizzando la divisa per farla più corta e attillata. At the entrance of my school there are teachers with scissors who monitor our uniforms and the length of our hair. They measure every detail with a ruler. Girls can’t have hair longer than three centimeters below the earlobes. One day my hair was 3.1 cm long and the teacher did not simply trim it by 0.1 cm. As a punishment she cut my hair to 2cm below the earlobes. They also cut uniforms they feel are too short so you have to buy a new one. Once we are inside we change everything back to how we like it. We customize the uniforms to make them tighter and shorter. If I could, I’d like to be reborn as a British teenager and be like one of the teens from Vivienne Westwood ads.

Tim Petras was the first son of Konni and Lutz Petras. He had many pink dresses, played with Barbies and loved My Little Pony as much as his sisters did. He was a rich and powerful huevon, one of the richest guys in the world and the boss around here. Who wouldn’t want that? Some people in my family worked for him. Per questo mettevo sempre la gamba finta se un ragazzo m’invitava ad uscire. Quando scoprivano la verità, c’era chi mi amava ancora e chi no, e a qualcuno facevo così pena che diceva di volermi ancora più bene. Ma da quando ho vinto il concorso locale di Miss Landmine, a dicembre, non me ne importa più niente. In realtà, mi dispiace per chi mi dice cattiverie, perché so quanto è potente il karma. I don’t cry very often but when I do it’s because I feel like I can’t change my situation. So I try to live in a way that avoids stuff I will regret and won’t be able to change.

I grew up and still live in the same town. When I was about 12 my physics teacher was annoyed with the class so he decided that I would teach and had me talk about whatever for an hour.

Sailor Moon is very funny, but also a huge crybaby and very clumsy... And I am all three of those… Oh and her favorite foods are sweets which I am a sucker for. I started drawing her long ago, but I only learned the anime makeup last March. Then I put a tutorial video on YouTube and other girls started trying to do it too, which was great! Sinceramente, neanch’io afferro tutto al 100%. Mi ricordo quando ho visto la prima immagine Visual Kei. Stavamo navigando su Internet con mio fratello e avevamo trovato una band chiamata Xjapan. Dopo aver ascoltato qualche brano, decidemmo di fondare un gruppo come quello. Ora ci chiamiamo Visual Moon e viviamo per fare musica. Sogniamo di diventare la band più famosa di Visual Kei, e di continuare fino alla morte.

A Flogger is someone who has a Fotolog, this website where you upload your photos. Getting comments means that more people are seeing you. The more you get in less time, the better. The other day I posted my photo and in 12 minutes I got 470 comments. I became a Flogger last year. I went dancing at a bowling alley in which everyone was dressed differently. I liked their style so I decided to transform my look and grow my hair. Now most of my friends are also Floggers but at first it was really hard. People would call me a sissy and there was even a case of a boy my age who was beaten to death. I wish people could accept new, modern trends instead of focusing on how things were in the past.

I went through hell when I was younger. I was always isolated and bullied for my weight and color. The way kids would pick on me! I had to be strong and fight back. My family eventually had to move from Cape Town to the Eastern Cape, leaving everything behind. I feel like I’m a survivor. When the going gets too rough, I always go to volunteer in a local retirement home. It gives me perspective: people there have been through it all.

I always wanted to be in the spotlight. When I was young, I wanted to be a pop star. Then in a high school play I dressed in a giant bonnet and skirt, with a toy pig under my arm. They called me the ‘pig lady’ and I was a very mean character. I also played in a film for an anti-bullying campaign. I was the bully. My end-of-year show was called ‘Remedy’, set in a dream world me and my friends created. All of us were dreams and I was a sleepwalker. Now I feel like I’ve crossed a threshold. I’m sort of in this ‘in between time’ in which I’ve finished high school and I’m going away but I basically like strange things and still feel like I’m 12! It’s a bit scary and hectic, but the best part of life is having an unpredictable future.

Eravamo tutti dei sogni, e io ero una sonnambula. Adesso mi sembra come di aver varcato una soglia. Cioè mi trovo in un “momento di passaggio” in cui ho finito il liceo e me ne vado via, ma fondamentalmente mi piacciono cose strane e mi sembra di avere ancora 12 anni! Il che è ansiogeno e mi fa un po’ paura, ma la cosa migliore nella vita è che il futuro è imprevedibile.
