She really does have a tribe by Dana Sleger

a

manda Ealy is a fascinating woman. She adores spending time with her three beautiful nieces, loves a good workout, especially cycling, and really enjoys her job as the operating room material coordinator at Garden Park Medical Center in Gulfport. There’s also something very special about her life — a generational calling, if you will — that has set her on a unique path to preserve her Indian heritage and help guide her tribal community. Ealy was recently elected to a remarkable position as the first woman to serve as chairperson of the Pascagoula River Indian Tribe. It’s a rather historical postion too. When it comes to Indian tribes, a chief is traditionally an inherited position who oversees a tribe. A chairperson is elected and is a more modern title, but operates within the same authoritative function as “chair of the sitting government” to make sure the tribe is successful and that the needs of the Indian community are being met. After serving as the interim chair of the Tribal Council for a year, Ealy is well prepared for this four-year term and is excited about being the first female to hold this position. “I think that any tribe that elects a woman for chairperson is a wonderful way of showing that women can be great leaders,” Ealy says. “It shows great progress in tribes as well as other nations who are giving women a chance to become great leaders.” One of the main inspirations for pursuing this leadership position is to honor the legacy of her late father who played a very important role in the tribe as a council member/elder. After he became ill and was unable to attend regular meetings, he asked his daughter to step in and take his place on the council. “After my father passed away without seeing his lifelong dream of our Indian tribe having federal recognition, it was at that moment I knew I couldn’t walk away and that the voice of the people needed to be heard through a democratic process,” Ealy says. “I knew I had to finish this project and unify our people. I’m not really a spotlight person, but I felt like I had to run for chair because of my deep Indian bloodline (Eley, Bang, Phelps, Garlic) to this 14

tribe and the suffering that my people had to endure.” In 2015, the Tribal Council created a constitution and bylaws that organized the tribe into districts with each district having democratically elected representatives sitting on the council. This expanded the nature of the government to better meet the needs of tribal members, as well be more efficient in its petitioning of the Bureau of Indian Affairs for federal acknowledgment as an Indian tribe. The election was held on Oct. 21 and it was the first tribal-wide democratic process with ballots submitted from the districts that encompass communities across the Mississippi Gulf Coast, some throughout the state, and an “outside of the state” community to account for tribal members that have moved away. “This is the first time we have ever done an election,” Ealy says. “Our government is young, but growing stronger and more efficient for the people.” The seat of government operates primarily in Vancleave, and Ealy, along with other tribal council members also elected in October, understand their positions of leadership reflect a mandate from the people of the Pascagoula River Tribe. One aspect of this mandate is the continued growth of the Tribal Heritage Preservation Program and the Tribal Community Action Program, which Ealy helped develop. The Tribal Heritage Preservation Program aids in protecting tribal churches and cemeteries by getting these sites state and/ or federal designations as historic landmarks and reacquiring ownership of those sites the tribe does not currently own. The program also educates the people on their culture and history, and hosts reunions for those that attended the Live Oak Pond/ Live Oak Schools in Vancleave. Currently, the council is working with Dr. Dixie Haggard to pursue a historical marker at the site of the schools, which was an important landmark to generations of Pascagoula River Indians, including Ealy’s father who attended when he was a young boy. Dr. Haggard, a professor of history at Valdosta State University in Georgia, is an expert in Native American ethnogenesis, especially Southeastern Indians and Federal Indian Policy. In 2013, he was asked by the Pascagoula River Tribe to assist with pursuing federal acknowledgment and is currently researching and writing the petition the tribe will submit to the federal government. Throughout this process, he has worked closely with Ealy and says she is the right leader for the tribe. “Amanda Ealy is the right person and at the right time to guide the Pascagoula River Tribe forward to a better future, at the same time it still honors its past,” Dr. Haggard says. “Ms. Ealy brings stability, motivation, organization and foresight to the leadership of the Pascagoula River Tribe at a point in time when the tribe needs to generate unity to promote its heritage and prepare to petition the U.S. government for federal acknowledgment.” As chairperson, Ealy’s vision for the tribe is full of hope for past, present and future generations to be honored and their stories to be heard. “My vision is for this tribe to become a help to our communities, to help our youth and any youth to achieve their goals in life, to be a symbol of hope, growth, unity and restoration,” Ealy says.

Pass Christian yoga studio creates a mind, body and heart experience

Leah Tennyson Rodgers always knew there was a reason she was so inclined to the arts, but she didn’t know how or when doors would open in a way that she could share her passion with others. When she and her husband, Bryan Rodgers, spotted a vacant church building in Pass Christian, the vision for her dream became a reality and Selah Yoga and Selah Arts Collaborative, LLC opened in December. Selah offers a dynamic blend of yoga, adult ballet and fitness classes inspired and taught by certified and degreed staff that specializes in these areas, including Pilates. “My hope is to create a centrally located space

It is a great place to either to get started or progress and advance.” Leah very intentionally created this space as a calming, welcoming and artistic atmosphere. Even the name is purposeful. “I just love what Selah means in the Bible,” Leah says. “It’s a ‘reflective pause’ — a time to really chew and marinate on what was just spoken or

sung. Yoga and great art is like that for me. It helps me feel connected to God and mankind in a way nothing else has besides nature. I love that!” The experience Leah brings to Selah is impressive. She received a B.A. in Performing Arts (vocal performance, theatre and dance) from Centenary College of Louisiana, was a film actor in New Orleans and Shreveport for a while, and is a trained dance instructor and trained opera singer. You could say the arts are part of her DNA and her multidisciplinary approach to yoga because of her degree background is the first way Selah incorporates a collaborative element. For her, dance and yoga are interconnected. “I try to do everything with a yoga mindset, meaning the mind, body and heart connection is always there for me,” Leah says. “In the same way, I try to bring that synchronicity into my arts performance work. Whether I am performing, creating or singing, I want the work I do to have a mind, body and heart connection as well.” A few years ago, a hip and back injury sidelined her ability to teach so she needed to find other ways to nourish her body physically, and that’s when she turned to Pilates and yoga. Ironically, these were avenues she used to crosstrain as a dancer, but then it became a lifeline of healing and eventually became the cornerstone of Selah. Leah completed a 200-hour yoga instructor certification through the reputable Dragonfly Yoga and River Rock Yoga Teacher Training program and became certified in Progressing Ballet Technique. “Selah truly is a culmination of my life experiences,” Leah says. “I have always been drawn toward the artistic and creative process. The years of dancing, choreography, movement, singing, etc., have helped me to approach things like yoga with a unique perspective.” The second collaborative element is the arts side. The long-term vision for Selah is to be a place that will host performances, provide visual artists with a place to showcase their work, and offer a venue for visual and performing artists to come together to create authentic, original multi-disciplinary works for the public through “art that touches and heals hearts.” The third element of collaboration is all about community. “My husband and I both strive to support and collaborate with other businesses who are in the general networking area that share the same rapport and heart for local businesses as we do,” Leah says.

SUPER SPREAD!

Football fans have waited all season for the biggest game of the year: the Super Bowl! Now granted, we all would love to see our favorite team on the field, but if that's not the case, a super spread sure makes up for it. Here are some yummy treats sure to score a touchdown with guests!

SLOW COOKER SWEET SPICY SAUSAGE 1 tsp. extra virgin olive oil ½ Tbsp. minced garlic 12 oz. chili sauce 12 oz. grape jelly ½ Tbsp. crushed red pepper ½ tsp. cayenne pepper 32 oz. fully-cooked sausage, cut into ½-inch pieces Pour the oil in a small saucepan and heat over medium heat. When the oil is hot, add the garlic and sauté for 30 seconds. Then add the chili sauce and grape jelly and mix together. Cook for 10 minutes on medium heat, stirring frequently. Place the sausage in your slow cooker. Add the spices to the sauce mixture, stir and then pour it over the sausage. Cover and cook for 1½ - 2 hours on high, or until the sausage is hot and the sauce is bubbly. Stir once after 1 hour. Before Valentine’s Day befalls the romantically inclined on Feb. 14, there is a lesser known holiday that also extolls the virtues of love, albeit absent of the societal pressures: Galentine’s Day. Made famous by Amy Poehler’s character on “Parks and Recreation,” Galentine’s Day is a celebration of female friendship, recognizing and honoring the supportive women in one’s life. To quote Knope: “Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every Feb. 13, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.” This year, the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art will present Bubbles & Bonbons: A Celebration of Female Friendship on Friday, Feb. 9 from 6-8 p.m. Gulf Coast Woman is the presenting sponsor. Come enjoy an evening tasting sparkling wines from assorted vendors and sampling sweet and savory delicacies from Mississippi Gulf Coast restaurants. Not only is Bubbles & Bonbons a night of fun, but proceeds from this fundraiser will provide free museum tours for Biloxi elementary schools. School districts are unable to secure free transportation and teachers are limited in affordable options for classroom excursions. OOMA views art as an important path that leads to self-reflection, creative problemsolving and social change. TICKETS AVAILABLE Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at www.georgeohr.org/museum-store or by calling (228) 374-5547. Proceeds support the Ohr and benefit Biloxi schoolchildren.

MARDI GRAS 2018 SPECIAL SECTION

Making the good times roll!

S Natalia Foltea

he wanted to grow up to be a beautiful ballerina, but sometimes young dreams fold out with a twist and so it was so for Natalia Foltea. She actually became purchasing manager at Mardi Gras Supplies in Gulfport, and not surprisingly, she sells a ballerina necklace — and it’s one of the store’s bestsellers. She hopes the piece will inspire other young girls to follow their dreams. Foltea worked as an attorney for more than 10 years before she decided to take a different path in her career. She had traveled to Gulfport seven years ago from Romania to visit a friend. During this downtime, she decided she wanted to improve her English and learn more about business. Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College was “affordable and had good reviews,” she says, so she registered to pursue a degree in business administration. Manny Peixoto, owner of Mardi Gras Supplies, recognized her abilities and offered her a position at his retail store. “I enjoyed my work so much that I decided to stay and be part of the great team we have,” Foltea says. The two seem to work well together, keeping the 65,000-square-foot store loaded with beads, throws, decorations, masks, party supplies costumes and fashion accessories. Foltea notes, “I always say: One mind is good, but two minds are better! We always discuss and listen to each other before we make any decision. Collaboration is the key to success.”

Mardi Gras

Natalia Foltea is surrounded by her team at Mardi Gras Supplies: Top row, Dawn Lee, office manager; Casey Packard, warehouse supervisor; Allison Hubbard, packer; Tina Burns, shipper; Crystal Morgan, cashier; Brittany Keys, cashier; Jakayla Miller, front manager. Bottom row: Sara Cline, shipper; Megan Meeks, lead cashier; Foltea, purchasing manager; Charlene Kilpatrick Smit, public relations.

For those wanting to let the good times roll during the Carnival season, Mardi Gras Supplies has become the best place to shop locally. “We have the largest selection of Mardi Gras beads on the Coast,” Foltea says. “We sell the beads individually, by the case and by the pallet to local and out of state customers, krewes, businesses, gift shops and more.” Though Fat Tuesday is still weeks away, the store already has seen a 35 percent increase in sales compared to last year. This means a lot to both Foltea and Peixoto, who promotes shopping local every chance they get. Peixoto, born in Naples, Italy, came to the U.S. to visit his girlfriend at Harvard 42 years ago. He did not intend to stay, but after the two traveled to California, they ran out of money. He called an aunt in Gulfport, asking if he could stay for a few days until his parents could send money from Italy. Well, he never made that return trip. After five years working as a nurse at Memorial Hospital, he started his wholesale import business at home in 1985 importing novelties and toys. He opened his first store 30 years ago and moved five times before choosing Pass Road location. In 1997, he launched a Mardi Gras online store. Mardi Gras revelry kicked off in December and will be in high swing until Fat Tuesday, which is Feb. 13, but the retail enterprise also

sells decorations, crafts and party supplies for other celebrations: Gasparilla Parades, St. Patrick’s Day, Fourth of July, luaus and Christmas decorations. Mardi Gras Supplies also ships to Canada, Germany and England. “Our targeted customers are carnival krewes, event planner businesses, large chains of restaurants, casinos, sport events and more,” says Foltea who orders items from all over the U.S. and has a few suppliers outside the States as well. A staff of 8-10 people work year-round to keep the store stocked and customers serviced. An additional 30 or so workers are hired to help handle the Mardis Gras and St. Patrick’s Day busyness. Many might not be aware of it, but Mardi Gras Supplies also offers custom-made necklaces and other promotional items for krewes, restaurant chains and other businesses. Foltea stays focused on ensuring Mardi Gras Supplies offer customers the products they are seeking at the best prices. She has learned many lessons from Peixoto and others, most importantly is that you must take care of your employees. “Treat them with respect and listen,” she says. “If I follow this rule I can accomplish anything.” “My role model is my father, who had a career as a mechanical engineer more than 50 years,” Foltea says. “He taught me that with hard work, honesty, respect and perseverance you can achieve anything you desire in life.”

“Adding value to a business is the ability to see the business through the customers' eyes. We are constantly working on understanding what is important for our targeted market and how our products benefit our customers.” — Natalia Foltea

'Goldin' opportunity for Make-A-Wish kids by Andrea Yeager Let’s hear it for the kids! The Make-A-Wish kids, that is. For the first or perhaps second time, these youngsters will have thrills of a lifetime — riding and throwing trinkets during a Mardi Gras parade. To the shouts of “throw me something,” these kids have a chance to forget their illnesses as they and their families are offered a chance to be stress-free for the day. MakeA-Wish makes dreams come true for children facing life-threatening illnesses. Thanks to Martin Goldin, developer of Florence Gardens and chair of Hope Academy, these families have this opportunity. Last year, Goldin brought back the Make-AWish float in the Gemini parade that rolls through downtown Gulfport, something that had not been done since Hurricane Katrina. A krewe in Orange Grove had disbanded so he was able to obtain one, but it needed a total overhaul. With the help of employees at Florence Gardens and Goldin, they gave the float a spectacular facelift. “The float was reworked from top to bottom, including ramps and gates for children in wheelchairs. He even purchased an ADA-approved portable toilet complete with ramps and rails,” says Rachel Rath, Make-A-Wish board member. “It makes me teary-eyed to think Mr. Goldin and Florence Gardens would do this for the kids.” Employees of Florence Gardens and other folks helped make this float a reality. They took a rusted-out float with dry-rotted floors down to a shell. From that shell, came Goldin’s dream. The kids would parade in 2017. The huge blue and white float is more the size of a barge 50

and decorated in Make-A-Wish stars and, of course, Make -A-Wish’s colors of bright blue and white. On those stars are the faces of the Make-A-Wish youngsters. They are the stars of this float. The work was pure joy. Goldin’s goal through this float is to make people more aware of Make-A-Wish and to help raise money to fund wishes. Currently, there are some 40 children waiting for their wishes to come to fruition and each wish costs Make-A-Wish about $8,000. The 10-12 children and their families selected by MakeA-Wish to ride last year were all given plenty of beads and throws, too. These were the children who were healthy enough to ride. Prior to the parade, this krewe was treated to a festive tailgate party with more food than one can imagine and their own DJ — all compliments of Goldin. It was a total party for all: kids, siblings, moms and dads, float workers and Goldin. “I have a world of respect for Mr. Goldin,” says Shellie Moses, regional director of Make-A- Wish Mississippi,Southern Region.. “He wanted this float to be top of the line … as perfect it as it could be.” Goldin’s dream may expand this Mardi Gras season. The float will roll in the Krewe of Gemini day parade, but also may roll in the Gemini night parade, and perhaps the Long Beach parade. This would allow more kids to participate and to bring more awareness to Make-A-Wish and its mission. Goldin and Make-A-Wish certainly are dream-makers.

Tax deadlines coming up and due dates matter

Every month, individuals and business owners are submitting information forms or making tax deposits or both to the Internal Revenue Service. Imagine if this personspecific avalanche of data and funds were coming at you. Can you imagine the highly organized system you would need to keep up with it? No wonder the IRS puts due dates on everything. Most taxpayers know that April 15th is tax due date, the day that your annual tax return or extension request with any under paid taxes are due. Likewise, most investors and small business owners know the four estimated tax payment due dates for the year. Besides these direct obligations to the IRS, there are other equally important due dates, like the deadline for funding your retirement account (e.g. IRA, Roth, SEP-IRA and SimpleIRA). Don’t miss these due dates — it’s costly. If you have ever been late on filing your income tax return (without properly extending it) or late in paying your taxes, you have first-hand knowledge of what the IRS can and will do to you. They don’t send the IRS police to your house. Instead they hit you in the pocket book where it can really hurt. And they do this with the law on their side. For 2018, the following are the most popular due dates for individuals and the small business owners. INDIVIDUAL TAX RETURN DUE DATES • April 17, 2018 – Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ, or 4868 Extension with any tax due • October 15, 2018 (extended due date) – Form 1040 or 1040A BUSINESS TAX RETURN DUE DATES • March 15, 2018 – S Corporation (Form 1120S), Partnership (Form 1065), Extension (Form 7004) • April 17, 2018 - C Corporation (Form 1120) or Extension (Form 7004) • September 17, 2018 (extended due date) –S Corporation (Form 1120S), Partnership (Form 1065) • October 15, 2018 (extended due date) - C Corporation (Form 1120) ESTIMATED TAX PAYMENT DUE DATES • April 17, 2018 – 1st estimated tax payment for 2018 52

CONSEQUENCES FOR LATE FILING OR LATE PAYING The IRS, by law, has the power to assess penalties to you for (i) failing to file a tax return, and, (ii) failing to pay taxes you owe by the deadlines. In IRS Tax Tip 2013-58, April 18, 2013, the IRS summarizes important points and the costs for not meeting the deadlines. Here are some of their points. 1. A failure-to-file penalty may be assessed if you do not file your tax return by the due date. 2. A failure-to-pay penalty may be assessed if you do not pay all your taxes by the due date. 3. The failure-to-file penalty is generally more than the failure-to-pay penalty. 4. The failure-to-file penalty for late filing is normally five percent of the unpaid taxes for each month or part of a month that your tax return is late. Penalty starts accruing the day after the due date. 5. The failure-to-pay penalty is ½ of one percent of your unpaid taxes. The penalty starts accruing the day after the due date and applies for each month or part of a month after the due date. 6. If both penalties (failure-to-file and failure-to-pay) apply in any month, the maximum penalty that you will pay for both is five percent. 7. Interest accrues on any unpaid tax from the due date of the return until the date of payment in full. The interest rate is determined quarterly and is the federal short-term rate plus three percent. Interest compounds daily. TAX DEADLINES continued on page 97

How to live financially with no regrets

People easily find many reasons not to save or invest. The reasons are as varied as there are people. Some find their reasons by Lee Rogers in the headlines every day; they don’t trust government, banks or investment professionals. Some people are procrastinators; they plan to save or invest but just have never gotten around to it. Some people choose to live it up today and worry about retirement when they get older. Then, there are the people who live on limited incomes or paycheck to paycheck and believe they don’t have enough or any money to invest. We see a huge amount of advertising for things to buy every single day. It’s hard to avoid “retail therapy” as a selfsoothing technique. I must admit that I fall prey to truck fever ever so often; every time my wife reminds me that I don’t “need” a new truck. The problem with “retail therapy” is that it doesn’t work. While it may provide temporary gratification instead of solving our underlying problem, it often only serves to compound them. There’s a wealth of research that shows spending money on material things not only fails to make us happy, but can leave us feeling downright miserable. If you want to spend and don’t want to regret the purchase, use your money to buy one of two things:

• •

Experiences, not things Services that create more time in your day

DEFINE YOUR VALUES This might not sound like a money decision, but understanding your values and redefining what is really important to you on a regular basis can directly impact how you use your money. It will also help you understand why you derive happiness from those purchases. When you understand your values, you can make sure your spending and how you use your money aligns with what’s most important to you. Know what’s important to you and why. When you define your values it is then easier to align your spending and financial goals with them. This process can help you prevent making financial decisions you may regret. Try a spending fast for one month; you will be shocked at much stuff you can do without. START EARLY Here is a simple illustration to help you see why the old adage to start saving when you are young is good advice. When Boudreaux was 18 he began saving $2,000 a year. The “Social Security” program in the United States refers to the governmental program providing payments to supplement income for disabled people and Americans of retirement age. to cut costs to the program is to delay the “full retirement age” used by Social Security to calculate the benefits. ALTERING FULL RETIREMENT AGE Social Security’s version of retirement age, known as the “full retirement age,” when you will get 100 percent of your payout, is currently 66. In 2018, newly eligible retirees, who were born in 1956, will have to wait until they are 66 years and four months old before they will be considered at “full retirement age” and be able to receive 100 percent of their monthly retirement benefit. survivor reductions. Studies have proposed that millions of dollars can be saved by the government if the formal retirement dates for Social Security and Medicare are extended by two or perhaps even three years. Therefore, you can expect the “full retirement age” to continue to rise. Right now, the earliest you can apply for Social Security benefits is age 62; however, a person who begins claiming their retirement benefit at age 62 will receive only 75 percent as much money each month as if they had waited until their “full retirement age” to begin claiming benefits. A person claiming a spousal benefit at age 62 would receive only 70 percent as much each month as if they had waited until “full retirement age” to claim benefits. If you wait until you’re 70, your monthly benefit will be higher. “Full retirement age” already is set to continue rising in the coming years for people born in 1955 and later; for instance, if you were born in 1960 or later, your full

retirement age is 67. By simply raising full retirement ages, without adjustments to the percentage of benefits available, the government could experience savings, but it will greatly impact Americans’ retirement plans. You must take this into consideration when you are doing your Estate Planning. A good estate plan should address any potential disability and your retirement years, not just plan for distributing your assets after your death. Frankly, my dear, for your estate plan you should be aware of what is happening with Social Security. Kathy Brown van Zutphen is an attorney licensed to practice law in Alabama and Mississippi. HEALTH

HEALTHIERYOU Rebeca Gonzalez's STORY

Transformed to transform others

Rebeca Gonzalez was working the night shift at the hospital when a patient “coded,” signifying emergency care was necessary. She and her team immediately started compressions to resuscitate the patient. “Compressions have to be fast and deep enough to be fully effective in saving a life,” the registered nurse says. “Within minutes, I became tired, sweaty and was breathing heavily. Luckily, my fellow nurses were there to help.” That night she left work but what had happened stayed with her. “I thought to myself, ‘What if this person didn’t survive because I could not effectively do my job?’ My job is to save lives.” She was confronted with how unhealthy she had become. She was so overweight and out of shape that she struggled to apply compressions to save her patient’s life. “I felt I was such a hypocrite. I had to tell my patients to

eat healthy, quit smoking and exercise. That was everything that I didn’t do. So, I decided I didn’t want to be that person anymore.” Gonzalez not only quit smoking and lost 60 pounds — she also changed careers. “I now help people before they go into the hospital,” says Gonzalez, who owns FitLife Studio. She began her journey by seeking out a trainer, not knowing at the time that he would help her do more than lose weight. Joe Barker helped her to change her “life in every way,” she says. (The two are now engaged to be married!) “I lost 60 pounds by replacing my unhealthy meals with the ViSalus nutritional program and exercising. After the weight loss, I decided to go a step further and start weight training.” She gained 10 pounds of lean muscle and now is “in the best shape of my life. I went from 205 pounds to currently 145 pounds.” She has capped her weight-

We put our jobs, children, family, and careers before our health, but you must make yourself and your health a priority. Our health is our greatest wealth. loss and weight training successes by completing several runs: Spartan races, 5ks, and most recently her first 12k. “I am looking forward to achieving much more,” she says. “Changing my health has been the best decision I ever made. It has become my way of life.” Rebeca’s story is similar to many others who over time have gained much more weight than they ever imagined they would and have tried multiple times to shed the pounds. “My unhealthy journey began while in nursing school. I gained approximately 60 pounds. I was a smoker and not active. Like most people, I would begin exercising with family and friends but would never stay committed. My eating habits never changed so I never succeeded in my weight loss.” Rebeca, who was born in Durango, Mexico, but grew up in Gulfport, started nursing school at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College after graduating from Harrison Central High. Her associate’s degree in nursing helped to land her a job as a registered nurse at a local hospital. Her unit specialized in orthopaedics and neurology. “I absolutely loved nursing, but after three years of 12-plus-hour shifts on nights, it just began to take a toll on

me,” she says. AFTER Her fiancé, Joe Barker, suggested she take a break. “Taking a break turned into a new career that allowed me to find a different way to help people,” she says. “During this ‘break,’ I obtained my personal training (ACE certification) and I also became certified in Pound Fitness and R.I.P.P.E.D. (Resistance Interval Plyometrics Endurance Diet). Obtaining these certifications gave me the opportunity to educate myself about living a healthier lifestyle, choosing healthier eating habits, and teaching a variety of exercise programs.” She and her fiancé recently opened a personal training studio called Fitlife Studio in Gulfport. “Our mission is to change lives through health and fitness,” she says. “Health and fitness gives me BEFORE the opportunity to transform other people’s lives. ARE THERE NATURAL SOLUTIONS TO THE AGING EPIDEMIC? It seems more and more young people are being afflicted with conditions normally associated with advanced age. All around us we are seeing children and young adults on prescription medication for high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and joint inflammation. Young men in the prime of their life are being treated for low testosterone. Older men fighting this decline find themselves on the back of a tiger trying to recapture their youth. People of all ages are struggling with chronic pain such that an opioid crisis is gripping our nation. Worst of all, we are seeing our beautiful children being stricken with formerly rare and often incurable cancer. Specialized healthcare and advanced medical resources are woefully inadequate, and despite long waits, expense and even travel to seek out experts, most will leave frustrated at the lack of answers. Clearly what we’ve been doing isn’t working.

iPhone addiction and “constant availability”? The answer is a resounding YES. However it is self-evident that the old-school methods of fad diets, antioxidants, and especially reliance on prescription “fixes” are not the answer. And while looking younger through synthetic hormones or plastic surgery may seem like a shortcut to slowing “aging”, at least on the surface, there are some serious health consequences to that approach.

“This 55 year old relative

of the simple, natural biohacking methods recommended by Dr. McKee”.

The answer could lie in as unlikely a place as Okinawa, Japan, where the world’s greatest percentage of centenarians can be found enjoying a vibrant, pain-free & active lifestyle well into their 100’s. There, the focus is on balance and harmony, with emphasis on nutrition, stressreduction, dignity, activity, fresh air, sunshine and clean water. However, is such balance even possible in today’s 24/7 age of

It turns out that the solution to the aging epidemic incorporates this ancient wisdom with cutting edge science, working with the body’s innate intelligence in order to become one’s best future self. In fact, the millennials have coined a term for this: Biohacking, which means taking control of a complex system (specifically your own biology) in order to achieve a desired outcome. Kelsie Dove's STORY BEFORE MY TRANSFORMATION All of my life I have struggled with food, my weight and my body image. I can remember feeling self-conscious about my body as early as third grade, and I can remember binge-eating and emotional eating habits as far back as 11 or 12 years old. I’ve cycled through diets and exercise plans, self-love and happy-asI-am mindsets, and back again more times than I can count. I measured food in my mind as “bad” or “good,” and I measured my health by my weight and clothes size. Both mindsets often left me feeling defeated and unhappy. WHAT I DID About two years ago my mindset was altered through an awesome book called “THINspired” by Mara Schiavocampo. I encountered the book at a particularly low point in my fitness life. I was the heaviest I have ever been and I felt terrible both physically and emotionally. I saw Schiavocampo do an interview on TV about her book and her health journey, and everything she talked about in the interview sounded just like my story. I devoured her book (no pun intended) within a few hours. For the first time I felt like someone else truly understood my struggle and had gained victory over it. Schiavocampo’s story inspired me to take my life and my health into my own hands, and she shared

the tools for me to be able to do that. HOW IT WORKED The most important mindset shift that I experienced was about the BEFORE AFTER nature of food. I realized that food is amoral — it is neither good nor bad. It’s just food. As I experienced that shift in my mindset, I found it was so much easier to make healthy food choices because I was no longer just deciding what I wanted to eat. The other element of health that I learned to reconsider was exercise. Before, I thought of exercise as a type of punishment — a penance done to atone for the food sins of the day. However, I came to understand exercise as a celebration of my body’s abilities. HOW I FEEL ABOUT MYSELF TODAY Now, almost two years into this journey, with several setbacks and roadblocks under my belt, I am happier and healthier than I have ever been because I finally understand that I am not defined by a number on the scale or on the tag of my clothes. I am defined by all of my dreams, goals, accomplishments, and relationships, and food and exercise simply help me to be the best me possible.

Lola Hernandez's STORY BEFORE MY TRANSFORMATION When I turned 50, I was overweight, sad and felt horrible. I never imagined that one day I would be able to run three feet, let alone a marathon! A pastor said something once that completely explained my life: “You will change when the pain of remaining the same is too much to bear!” I could no longer be what I had become, so I decided to get myself up off that sofa and to move. I came up with my own idea: I would start by simply moving, by putting my body in motion. So in January of 2011, I started this journey. WHAT I DID A friend of mine was beginning a fitness challenge on Facebook. She posted exercises for us to do each day along with cardio, and I started drinking lots of water. So it began and to tell you the truth, it was hard — not hard because I didn’t want to do it, but because I was so out of shape physically. Sit ups and jumping jacks and lunges felt like I was pushing 250 pounds of flesh up a hill, and that's exactly what I was doing! HOW IT WORKED I stopped sweet sugary drinks, I put down sweet snacks and

stayed away from fast food. I had read where a good way to start looking differently at food was to read ingredients — the less ingredients the better. I was focused and committed, and guess what? Pounds started to slowly melt away and I was getting smaller! I also began walking at a fast pace and working up a sweat. It wasn't easy, my legs and ankles hurt, and I would get tired easily, but I fought through wanting to give up. That eventually turned into a walk/run and I lost 50 in about six months. HOW I FEEL ABOUT MYSELF TODAY My quest to lose weight led not only to healthy eating, I fell totally and completely in love with running. I felt strong, powerful and finally felt in control! I have trained for and successfully ran many marathons, and I have done this all after turning 51 years old! I have lost a total of 70 pounds and my recipe for success is eating right, exercising, drinking water, sleep and resolve.

VAMPIRE FACIAL

Aesthetic procedure uses 'liquid gold'

One aesthetic procedure made famous by many known celebrities is a Platelet Rich Plasma therapy treatment nicknamed the Vampire Facial. It’s becoming one of the most sought after treatments that rejuvenates skin and tissue to stimulate collagen using the patient’s own plasma. The healing properties of plasma quickens the healing process with comparative results of some laser peels alone. (I personally call this rich plasma liquid gold due to it’s color and value to the body.) Dr. Charles Runels from Alabama trademarked the Vampire Facial and Vampire Facelift, and there is an official website with a listing of local physicians in your area that offer the service. The plasma is obtained from the patient’s arm. (Drink plenty of water prior to this process. Being hydrated will make this process more comfortable.) The blood is then spun / processed in a machine called a centrifuge where it separates the red and white blood cells from the rich powerhouse protein plasma used for rejuvenation, enhance collagen production and repair damaged blood vessels and cells. The PRP (growth factors) are then returned back to the patient’s facial skin in a particular way using micro needling / injections. The patient is numbed topically so the treatment is not painful. The growth factors then begin to go to work activating multipotent stem cells rejuvenating a more enhanced healthy youthful skin and tissue. Many promoting PRP claim: • Improved appearance of wrinkles, scars and stretch marks without the cost or down time of laser • Rejuvenate the undereye area without surgery • Tighten stubborn open pores • Plump and volumize any area where someone might otherwise place filler • PRP is used for incontinence alone and combined with

®

other procedures • PRP is used vaginally for sexual dysfunction (O Shot) One great benefit of PRP to all is that it is a completely natural process since it uses your own blood. Many patients are requesting the Vampire Facial because they prefer not to have fillers injected and prefer a more natural gradual rejuvenation process. The Vampire Facelift will use hyaluronic acid fillers to sculpt an immediate younger appearance while still keeping the natural shape of the patients face. Once the blood has been processed and the plasma is obtained, it is injected and acts as a scaffolding with the hyaluronic acid filler in which the new PRP tissue growth occurs. However, PRP can be effective when used alone. Many surgeons have been using PRP in numerous bone and joint surgeries for years due to the regenerative healing properties and the positive results documented are outstanding. I personally experienced this this year. I have suffered with otosclerosis for years and lost my hearing in my right ear. An amazing surgeon in Jackson, MS, used an implant in my ear and PRP for the healing process and I hear perfectly now! I share this experience with all to educate on the advances in medicine and how PRP can change your outlook on medicine. Skin is an organ too. Never feel guilty about taking care of the largest organ of your body for it is truly your first line of defense against sickness and disease! Consider adding PRP into your next treatment. It is not all about vanity. Also, keep in mind that reversing the sun damage is wise and can be preventative. A pap smear can save your life

Pap smears are the most widely used screening tool for finding pre-cancer and cancer of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus. Cervical pre-cancer and cancer are caused by high-risk strains of the by Dr. Elaine Kao Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). This very common virus can infect different parts of the body. It typically resolves on its own like a flu virus, but if it doesn’t it can cause pre-cancer/cancer. Fortunately cervical pre-cancer progresses slowly, giving us the opportunity to screen for and remove it before it becomes cancer. Pap smears look for the presence of atypical cervical cells and high risk HPV. It’s done during a pelvic exam when the 72

January-February 2018

provider collects a sample of cells with a small brush. If abnormal cells or high risk HPV are present, the next step may be to perform a closer visual exam of the cervix, known as colposcopy, with biopsies if needed. If pre-cancer is confirmed, it can be removed without damaging the uterus using a minor procedure such as a LEEP or a CKC. HPV vaccines are a preventative measure available for females and males from 9 to 26 years old. But patients should still receive their pap smear regularly. Be sure to get your yearly check-up with your OB/GYN to determine what types of screening you are due to have.

Self-care is health care

Self-care is taking proper care of yourself by nurturing yourself as you do others, and for many women, this requires a great deal of planning and commitment. Life is so busy and many women put other’s needs ahead of their own. However, self-care is actually health care. By caring for yourself you’ll be more physically capable and more emotionally available to properly care for others. You’ll also be happier and find others will appreciate your company more. By making time to exercise, eat healthy, stay on track with medical appointments and to relax, you’ll create healthy habits that help prevent illness and disease to give you even more time to enjoy family and friends. By making self-care a priority, it’s easier to be clear about what you actually need and want in your life, and to follow your passions and dreams. You’re more likely to attract the right people, relationships and things in your life, because you’ll be clearer about what you want and more able to say no to any obstacles. By respecting yourself with self-care, you also teach others to respect you and you’ll be less likely to tolerate disrespect. Self-care creates a balanced lifestyle. By consistently putting others first, we eventually become burnt out and can become resentful, depressed and anxious. Staying so busy that we neglect our own self-care creates stress that can lead to illness, chronic disease, immobility and premature death. Self-care is not selfish; it’s merely taking care of ourselves so we are better equipped to serve others. 1 Corinthians 6:19 reminds us that we honor God by taking care of our body: “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? ...Therefore glorify God in your body.” There are far more benefits of self-care than self-neglect. It just makes sense to plan ahead in 2018 to make this the year to take charge of your own health. Here are some helpful tips: USE YOUR PLANNER TO SCHEDULE TIME • Use daily for one thing you enjoy, such as a bubble bath, reading, walking on the beach, listening to music or chatting with a friend • Use weekly to relax with yoga, tai-chi, a hobby or socializing with friends • Use to exercise at least three times a week, get enough sleep and plan nutritious meals • Use for medical and dental check-ups and appointments

FASHION & BEAUTY

Find that perfect bra by Melissa Logos The most common issues of an ill bra fitting are when “the girls” fall out of the cup, the underwire is uncomfortable, the band rides up your back, the center does not lie flat on the chest wall, the cup is empty, or maybe the straps do not stay up. In a properly fitted bra, your girls should be fully supported by the band and the breast tissue needs to be completely encapsulated into the cup. Here are some tips to help you shop for the right bra, and remember, a professional fitting is the best place to start. SNUG HUG When you have the correct bra on, the band should feel like a snug hug. It is essentially what is supporting your breasts. The band should always be parallel with the ground, and it needs to be snug enough that it will not shift. CUP IT The cups in a bra should encapsulate all of your breast tissue, which need to be inside the underwire. Breast tissue should not fall out of the top, bottom or the side, and it is important to scoop and swoop all of the tissue inside of the wire. Not all bra styles work with all breast tissue types, so find the cup that works best for you! BACK FLUFF Back fluff is a pretty term for what is known as back fat, and a well-fit bra will help. All breast tissue that falls into the underarm needs to be pulled forward into the cup. You may have to go up in the cup to support the tissue. Remember, the snug band will anchor the girls. BAND MATTERS The most common reason your straps may fall would be that the band is too large. Keep in mind, the straps are proportioned to the band size. You may need to go up in 76

November-December 2017

the band for comfort, to get more volume in the cup, or to eliminate back fluff. Having the correct band size will help keep those straps up! WIRE OR WIRELESS Underwire serves a purpose and helps support your girls. Sometimes ladies experience life changing events and the underwire should not be worn. Consider a non-wire or alternative wire bra in this case. However, the band still needs to be snug and the cup needs to be full. BODY CHANGES If you have had an augmentation, reduction or lift, a correct fitting bra is still important. If the body changes, the tissue still needs to be supported. FIT THEN STYLE Find your correct size and then move on to style. Buy the bra that works with your breast tissue — one that lifts, supports and is comfortable. New year, new makeup techniques by Jackie Merlau | jmerlaumakeup.com

With a new year, comes a new you! At the beginning of the January, many of us create lists and set goals to better ourselves and our everyday routines. In the spirit of the ringing in 2018, I have compiled a list for you that consists of new makeup products or techniques that can be added to your existing makeup routine. There is no better time to try something new and different than right now! SETTING SPRAY Add a setting spray to your routine. When you finish applying your makeup, set it with a spray that will help your makeup last throughout the day. (Urban Decay All Nighter, $32) EYE PRIMER Use an eye primer prior to applying your eyeshadow, which will keep your shadow from creasing and the colors will apply more pigmented. A primer also maintains your makeup throughout the day. (MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot, $22) TRANSLUCENT POWDER Set your makeup with a translucent powder. Softly apply this powder to those tough parts of your face that just don’t seem to hold makeup. The powder has a long wear, holds the makeup in place and is colorless, so it doesn’t add any flashback. (RCMA No-Color Powder, $12) MOISTURIZER Get a moisturizer with sunscreen in it. This is a must before applying a flawless makeup application. And since you’re already applying moisturizer, go ahead and apply

one that promotes healthy skin with sun protection too! (Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream SPF 30, $27.50) COLOR EYELINER Use color eyeliner to give your makeup a pop. There is a plethora of eyeliner pencils in every color you can imagine. Find a color that makes you feel sassy, or one that makes your eye color stand out. I particularly enjoy smudging a colorful eyeliner along my bottom lash line. (Makeup For Ever Aqua Liner, $21) GLITTER Don’t be afraid to incorporate glitter. This is another fun way to add some spice to your makeup routine. If you’re a lover of all things that sparkle, this is a great addition for you! Use this as an eyeliner, pat glitter on your lips or even buff the glitter on your entire eyelid! (Lemonhead.la Spacepaste, $23) LIPSTICK Change your lipstick color. Whether you try a bolder color, a brighter pink or something nude, embrace something different. Try changing it up a bit to reflect the seasons or your new “This is my year” attitude! (MAC lipsticks, $17.50)

Boutique on wheels Denham expands from mobile to brick-and-mortar store story by Dana Sleger photography by Brandi Stage

A boutique on wheels? According to the owner of Fashion Carriage, you bet! Sara Denham got the idea from Pinterest (of course!) and was the first vendor on the Gulf Coast to bring a mobile boutique on the road to fairs, arts and crafts festivals, private parties and more. “The mobile boutique is an amazing way to take the business on the road — take the fashion to the people instead of them having to come to you,” Denham says. “It is a lot of work, but every event is an enjoyable learning experience.” In fact, it was through one of these types of events where Denham met her now landlords that led to the brickand-mortar phase of the Biloxi-based business, which opened last year right next to the Howard Avenue Emporium and the Flower Basket. “It was yet another part of God’s plan falling into place,” Denham says. “They had a space available for rent and I was looking for one. It’s a beautiful partnership.” It was a timely move for the business too since the customer base was steadily growing. “We had so many people that wanted to be able to see some products and have the ability to shop in between events, so we decided to open a brick-and-mortar for that reason,” Denham says. January-February 2018 80

Fashion Carriage is all about, well, fashion! The business specializes in affordable boutique-style clothing for girls and women, including plus-size attire. In addition to being able to pick up a great outfit, Denham’s inventory also features workout wear, Moto leggings, kimonos, Swarovski bracelets and earrings, as well as handmade jewelry by Denham and her daughter, Elisa, and local artist, Kirstyn Ray. Denham adores her family, who also happen to be a big part of the Fashion Carriage. She says the business is “without a doubt a family business” because she could not do it without the help of her daughters and husband. “This business gave me a way to provide for our family, as well as spend time with family,” she says. “My oldest daughter, Elisa, is my greatest help in this business and we are able to spend time together while doing something we love together. My 13-year-old daughter loves to help out as well and I do hope that she has the drive to do the same as she gets a little older.” As far as Denham’s vision for the business, things are already looking bright: “As with my life, I place this in God’s hands and only hope and pray to become a staple in the Biloxi Community.”

Roll up those sleeves!

by Jerika Vincent

Jerika Vincent spends her day zipping across the Coast talking to the most fashion-conscious for her television show. Pick up on these trends: •

Make sure to double-roll your sleeves on dress shirts for a more relaxed business look.

Stripes are in but be sure to stay away from wide horizontal ones. They tend to be less accentuating and make for a wider appearance.

No matter how you feel in the morning, get up and get dressed because you never know who you will run into or meet!

JERIKA'S FASHION SHOWCASE Catch Jerika's show on OCEAN 7, WXVO-TV every Wednesday and Sunday night at 8:30 p.m. on Cable One 100 and AT&T U-verse Channel 7, or over the air: 7.1, 7.2, and 7.4 HD.

You may be surprised by 2018 fashion trends

Spring is a time when we start anew and that means spring's 2018 must-have trends are upon us. Everything thing old is new again on the New York and Paris spring runway shows. The color of the moment — wait for it — is ice cream pastels. Yes, they're back. And I don't know about you, but this trend is not for everyone. Just imagine yourself in bubble gum pink, soft mint green, lavender and soft yellow. Vogue calls these colors "ice cream girl." Well, this is one girl that will choose one of these baby pastels and wear it as a blouse or tank under a jacket, or pair a pastel dress with the other popular trend, which is denim. Yes, denim refuses to die and it’s back with a vengeance. Recycle that denim jacket and

update it by wearing both trends together. Enough about pastels. The big news is… are you ready? Plastics! Yes, like the famous line from The Graduate, "I have one word for you, plastics." Karl Lagerfeld sent models down the runway in plastic rain hats, hooded capelets and cap-toed PVC boots for the Chanel 2018 Collection. This fashion girl loved it! You can go online to check out the Chanel show, which was opened by Kaia Gerber. Yes, that's right, the daughter of Cindy Crawford. Brenda, of A Better You Image Transformation, is a seasoned retail and fashion merchandising executive, image consultant, pageant coach, and former model with more than 30 years experience in the retail industry. Trends: Earth tones, grays, metallics by Billie Comeaux

In 2018, you will see many traditional colors returning, but with more sophistication. Earth tones give a cozy warmth to your decorating scheme. Metallics and grays are a smart modern balance. Chocolate hues of natural wood and the use of unique lighting can create a spectacular and comfortable room setting.

Greenery in a contrasted, light colored container gives chic elegance. Mixing lighter chairs with your dark table gives a more fashionable style. Also, adding unique accessories and blending textures, such as metal, glass and stone add a modern touch! Comeaux is co-owner of American Factory Direct Furniture.

Bay home transformed from Model T car garage to contemporary design story and photographs by Ellis Anderson

A century ago, Model T’s were all the rage. Although paved roads on the Mississippi Coast were rare, consumers clamored for more of the new-fangled automobiles. The Ford Motor company in Michigan shipped the cars in pieces to Bay St. Louis, where they were assembled in a large garage built in 1911. It was located at 107 Washington Street. Today, a striking house stands where the garage once did. Built in 2016, its design gives a nod to the original garage and the small guest house built onsite by historian Charles Gray after Hurricane Katrina destroyed the garage. The current home was built by Joe and Sunny Miceli, who just happen to be antique car enthusiasts. Sunny grew up “all around the world,” but raised her children in Bay St. Louis and Pass Christian. Joe is a New Orleans native, founder of a professional investigative firm. The two met when Joe was living in Orange Beach, Alabama, and Sunny was visiting a friend — Joe’s next-door neighbor. The couple married in 1996, eventually selling Joe’s Alabama house and settling in Gulfport. But Bay St. Louis kept calling. Sunny’s children had attended Our Lady 90

January-February 2018

Academy and St. Stanislaus, so she was very familiar with the Bay. When the new harbor opened in 2014, the Micelis moved their boat over — aptly named “Beach House” — and began looking at lots where they could build a new home. In typical small town fashion, a friend introduced them to Charles Gray, executive director of the Hancock County Historical Society. Charles had purchased the old Hille garage before Katrina. He’d transformed the derelict four-bay garage into a two-bed/bath house complete with what Charles describes as “a 1296-squarefoot grand ballroom.” After the unprecedented 2005 hurricane demolished the building, Charles worked on plans for a new house on the site, first building a smaller guesthouse he dubbed the “East Wing.” Construction hadn’t begun on the main house when he became enchanted by a large historic Victorian home on Carroll Avenue and purchased that instead. The location at 107 Washington was perfect for the Micelis. Sunny owns a mortgage company and appreciated the exceptional elevation of a lot so close to the beach. The view from the lot was wonderful and the fact that it was

Sunny and Joe Miceli

in walking distance to the commercial district of Old Town sealed the deal. They purchased the property from Charles and put the word out to Sunny’s real estate friends that they’d eventually be selling their Gulfport home. The Micelis hadn’t even started planning their new house yet when someone knocked on their front door in Gulfport. “He asked me if we could be out by the end of the month,” Joe says. “I told him I was sure we could work something out, never thinking we’d end up moving two weeks later.” Sunny laughs. “We were literally moving out the back door while they were moving in the front.” The Micelis moved onto Beach House

in the Bay St. Louis harbor with the intent of building their new home as soon as possible. Sunny’s friends referred her to Mobile designer Andrew Dooly. Andrew came over and borrowing a 20-foot ladder from a family who live in the Bay, studied the views around the lot. He also met with Charles and referred to historic photos of the Hille garage as he began conceptualizing. Originally, the Micelis planned on building a main house in addition to the East Wing cottage, but Andrew convinced them to actually wrap the new home around the cottage, encompassing the 10 X 44 squarefoot structure. Sunny and Joe’s new home “bucket list” also included 12-foot ceilings, an open floor plan, lots of porches, a small pool, an outside fireplace and lots of large windows. Joe dreamed of having space for a pool table he’d owned since the 1980s, but given all the other “must-haves” and the challenges of building on a lot that was only 15’6 X 52’, Joe resigned himself to leaving the table in storage. Yet, when Andrew revealed the plans a few months later, the last thing he showed the Micelis was the upstairs living area perfectly sized for a pool table. Although the lot was located in the Bay’s historic district, the contemporary design met all the guidelines (which allow for contemporary architecture which is compatible with the existing historic neighborhood). The Micelis say being in the district was a selling point. Sunny points out that the property values in the Bay now compared to the rest of the Coast are an indication of the district’s effectiveness. Joe, who had built two large houses before, acted as the contractor and was on site every day while the house was being built. The entire process, from concept to completion took about a year and a half. When asked what they might have done differently, Sunny and Joe looked at each other, obviously drawing a blank. 92

January-February 2018

“Why, nothing,” Sunny says, after a long pause. “I guess we both knew what we wanted going in after having lived in other homes.” One enters the home in a bright L-shaped living/dining/kitchen area. The initial impression is one of comfort and ease. Heart-pine flooring was especially selected and milled by a friend. Stained a light color, it adds to the natural light-hearted feel of the home. Leading from the kitchen, a window-lined corridor parallels the street, running beside the pool. On the back side, there’s an office/library area and a master bath. The hall leads to the master bedroom, also looking out over the pool and courtyard. This is the area that took in and expanded the former East Wing, built by Charles. Upstairs, there’s a guest room for the grands, the pool room, a lounging area and a another large bedroom. The bedroom and lounge both open up to a bricked-floored porch. From there, a spiral staircase winds up to the lookout atop the house, where two comfortable deck chairs beckon. Sunny masterminded the interior décor, with bold moves like the solid dark grey bathroom downstairs, which comes off with a dramatic beauty. She’s easily melded furnishings they’ve collected from their travels, favorite pieces they’ve grown to love through the years and new furniture selected especially to complement the house. With children and grandchildren keeping life exciting, the Micelis are taking advantage of all the Bay has to offer: splendid views, bicycling, shopping, nearby restaurants, and the harbor, where “Beach House” is always ready for the barrier islands. “It’s a really diverse community,” Joe says. “But everybody’s happy here. It’s a good spot.” So while Hille’s garage may be no more, things have a strange way of coming full circle in Bay St. Louis. Parked in the new garage at 107 Washington, is the Micelis’ 1939 Studebaker.

Black is in! by Adrienne Elliott

As a new year approaches, we make time to possibly improve our diet, start that workout regimen again, spend more time with family or work on whatever resolution you make, and all this most likely becomes our top priority. Well, for those of us that love design, we’re inspired to freshen up our color palette for 2018. If you ask me, that is an incredible new year’s resolution and a great way to start a new year! I could not be more excited to share the color of the year with you. This is a color I have loved using in my designs and personal home for years. It is a color that may scare you a little bit, but in the words of Robin Sharma, “Change is hard at first, messy in the middle and gorgeous at the end.” The color of the year is black! So now you may wonder how to use black in your design? If you are feeling bold, I challenge you to paint a room black. You would be absolutely amazed at the elegance it brings, and contrary to popular belief, it can actually make a space feel larger rather than smaller. In our personal home, we have black walls in our master bathroom, powder room and dining room, which showcases a black dining room table. Needless to say, I am a total and complete fan of black as the color of the year. If painting a room or wall is not in your comfort zone (reminder: it is only paint and easily changed), try a new area rug, throw pillows or even black vases. Interior trim painted black also is absolutely stunning. This color is now starting to trend in the industry in building materials such as windows, cabinetry, flooring and even matte black appliances. It looks best with crisp white trim, neutral and pastel colors. Jewel tones also are hot for 2018 with midcentury modern looks hitting the market. You will be sure to find a sexy navy sofa in our Elliott Homes model to showcase a touch of jewel tones. The always trending bright white and warm neutrals married together will, of course, forever be a fan favorite. I do adore white. So if this is what your design spirit prefers I encourage you to commit to freshening up one element in your home. Why? A new year and a fresh new quilt or a new throw pillow will make your heart happy. I promise. Elliott is a design specialist with Elliott Homes, LLC. Reach her at elliott.homes.llc@gmail.com

Are you celebrating Happy Next Year or Happy New Year?

Every year we literally celebrate a new year on January 1. We have the ceremonial countdown to midnight. We toast. We pray. We kiss our loved ones. We drink the champagne! And then 12:01 rolls around and we go right back to doing the same thing. We look the same. We have on the same clothes. We are with the same people. The only thing new is the date. We really should be saying, “Happy Next Year!” It is not really a new year unless we do something to make it new. Otherwise, we are going to roll up to the same job, with the same attitude, with the same list of dreams and the same list of disappointments. So are you going to celebrate your next year in 2018 or are you going to truly have a new year? In order to truthfully celebrate a new year, you must commit to a new mindset, new habits and new people! NEW MINDSET Creating a new life all begins in your thoughts. Your thoughts produce your actions. Your actions create outcomes. Your outcomes determine your life. You cannot create a new life with an old mindset. You must have a new vision for your life. Vision creates consequences. If you have limited vision, you will have limited outcomes. If you create a vision for your future, it will show up in your present actions. Your beliefs and values guide your actions. Every belief creates an action. Every action creates a future. Be deliberate in the future you create. Who are you? What are you doing? Where are you going? How are you feeling? You should be able to close your eyes and see your future self. What you see is who you will be. Create your new life in your mind first. Write down your vision. Live it in your actions. NEW HABITS It does you no good to write down your vision if you do not create actions that are aligned with them. You must be specific about what you want to accomplish. If you have a very vague vision, you're going to have very vague results or none at all. “I want to be successful in 2018” is vague. What does successful

mean? Is that having a certain amount of money in the bank? Is that getting a certain job or promotion? Is it completing school? You must be very specific about what it is that you want to accomplish. This also includes giving yourself a deadline. I will create $XX,XXX in revenue by December 31, 2018! I will attain a promotion to A. Next, you must have a clear plan of how you are going to bring your vision into reality. Because if all you do is say “I want to accomplish X by this date,” but then you don't come up with a plan that outlines specific actions that you have to do to accomplish X, then you still have a very vague aspiration. I will create $XX,XXX in revenue by December 31, 2018 by selling XXX products each quarter. I will become eligible for the promotion to A by completing Y degree by June 30, 2018. Many times you focus on what you need to do and the actions that you need to take. It is equally important to identify what you need to stop doing. Be honest and realistic about the behaviors and actions that are going to keep you away from your goals. I will stop impulsive shopping and save $X,XXX per month. The third component to creating new opportunity is really very simple, yet we make it complex. You must do what you said you were going to do! Every big goal should have 2-3 small progressive tasks that keep you moving. Each progressive task should be expressed as an action with a deadline. And don’t skip the deadline! Hold yourself accountable to yourself. If you can’t be your own accountability partner, align yourself with someone who will help you stay on task. Stephanie D. Keep score on your business

As an entrepreneur for the past 20 years, it’s been hard to focus on personal growth, happiness or health if my businesses were struggling. Business and personal success often go handin-hand. So, as we focus on health in this issue, let’s take a minute to dive into the health of your business. One of the best indicators or tools to gauge the health of your business is a business scorecard. We’ve covered this in a past issue, but to recap, this scorecard is a weekly measurement of a handful of key metrics in your business. Examples of metrics could be marketing leads, errors made, client satisfaction score, accounts receivable, employee utilization, etc. You cannot only use a scorecard to measure the health of your business, it also can be used to predict future health (if you choose leading indicators whenever possible). A scorecard is a lot of work, but the return on investment is worth the effort. While I’m a firm believer that a scorecard can change your life, some business leaders have asked for a shortcut. They have asked for a single number to track instead of the 5-15 numbers we usually track on a scorecard. No single number can measure the health of your business, but measuring your profit is the next best thing. In its simplest terms, profit is what you have left after you invoice your clients, receive payment, pay all COGS (costs of goods sold), and pay all expenses. Let’s run through an example using a service-based business: • Revenue – COGS = Gross Margin • Gross Margin – Expenses = Profit A healthy service-based business will usually spend about 50 percent of every incoming dollar on COGS (costs of goods sold). COGS are the expenditures required to deliver the service/product that you sell. In a service-based business, the highest COGS is payroll. After COGS, you should have 50 percent of your total revenue left (this is called your gross margin). A healthy service-based business can keep expenses below 30 percent of their total revenue. These expenses could be rent, utilities, marketing costs, etc. After 30 percent to expenses, you’re left with 20 percent profit. If you’re not happy with your profit, you can begin to reduce your COGS or expenses. I’ve seen companies add 2, 4, even 10 percent to their bottom-line profit without adding more revenue or laying off employees. They did it by reducing expenses. If you don’t know how healthy your business is, run your financial reports (P&L, Balance Sheet and Cash Flow) and take a look at your profit. Do not run your business by simply checking your bank balance on a daily basis. Instead, create a simple budget and focus on improving any one of the numbers above (total revenue, COGS, or expenses). In the next 90 days, how much can you improve? Reach Ryan Giles at ryan@tractionstrong.com.

TAX DEADLINES continued from page 52

8. If you properly request an extension of time to file your individual income tax return and pay at least 90 percent of the taxes you owe, you may not face a failure-to-pay penalty. You must, however, pay any remaining balance by the extended due date. 9. If your return is filed more than 60 days after the due date or extended due date, there is a minimum penalty of $135 or 100 percent of the unpaid tax. 10. Showing reasonable cause for not filing or paying on time may get you out of the penalties. 11. The penalty for estimated tax payments is figured separately for each payment period. You could owe a penalty for earlier late payments even if you later pay enough to make up for the underpayments. This is true even if you are due a refund when you file your income tax return.

12. Retirement funding after the due date is a non-qualified contribution and you lose the deduction. 13. The late filing penalty for the 1120S S Corporation or 1065 Partnership Tax Returns is $195 per shareholder or partner per month. Mark your calendar, put it in your smart phone reminder or app, or get your trusted tax advisor to remind you of these due dates. It’s ultimately your responsibility; and, meeting these deadlines is an important part of your financial obligations. NO REGRETS continued from page 54

FINANCIAL TERM continued from page 55

By the time he was 23 he was married and had a child and didn’t think he could continue to put aside the $2,000 so he stopped. However, he was wise enough not to spend the $12,000 he had saved. Because he had not just put it in a savings account but had invested with a financial professional, he averaged an 8 percent return. All those years he watched his small savings grow and at the age of 67 he had $527,203.* He and Thibodeaux often talked about their savings. When Thibodaux was 29, he started saving and put aside $2,000 every year until he was 67. Even though he invested with the same financial professional Boudreaux used, his average rate of return was also 8 percent and he had put $38,000 into his savings and it had only grown to $513,133.* If you want to avoid money decisions you may regret later in life, the time to make a change is now. Define your values. Reevaluate your spending based on your values. Start saving. As Nike says “Just Do It.” I try to remind myself of something I heard Dr. Kevin Elko say, “There are two pains you must face in this life, the pain of discipline or the pain of regret.” Choose your pain.

In the early 1980s, inflation hit annual rates close to 15 percent. In the height of the Depression, deflation was as low as negative 30 percent. In the past several years, inflation has been right around 1-2 percent, sometimes dipping into deflation but just briefly. The extremes throw the economic system out of whack. When inflation is high, lenders need to pay high interest rates to cover it, which makes borrowing prohibitive and slows down business. When deflation is significant, businesses can’t sell their products profitably, or they might even take a loss. As a result, they can’t afford to pay workers a decent wage — or even retain them. Hence the long breadlines of the ‘30s due to unemployment touching 25 percent. Even when inflation is low, it’s worth paying attention to. Over time, inflation can eat into the value of investments that don’t stay ahead of it. Unfortunately, that’s not as simple as snapping up a case of not-yetreleased-but-coveted smartphones. Talk to a financial advisor to find out about your best options to combat current and potential inflation/deflation rates.
