Bringing light back into lives

SPOT THERAPY FOUNDER ADVOCATES FOR FAMILIES

After a car accident left her friend paralyzed from the waist down, Jessica Carter witnessed the transformative power of occupational therapy.

A college student at the time, Carter accompanied her friend to all her therapy sessions, which greatly influenced the trajectory of her life.

“The (occupational therapist) was helping her get back to the things she loved to do for instance, putting makeup on, trying clothes on while shopping, painting, etc.,” Carter recalls. “I felt they were the ones who, throughout her care, actually got to know her and helped bring light back into her life. I knew I wanted to be that light for others — especially children.”

True to that desire, Carter became a beacon of hope herself. After earning her master of occupational therapy degree from the University of St. Augustine, she went on to complete her clinical training at John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, where she developed skills in feeding, splinting, water therapy and more.

Upon returning home, the Ocean Springs native recognized a growing need for providers and advocates in her area.

“I knew I wanted to create a home for families to come and get quality care and feel welcomed and advocated for …,” she says.

THUS, CARTER FOUNDED SPOT THERAPY LLC, WHICH PROVIDES UNIQUE, FAMILY-CENTERED CARE THROUGH SPEECH, OCCUPATIONAL AND PHYSICAL THERAPY AT TWO COAST LOCATIONS.

A VOICE FOR THE VULNERABLE

To Carter, serving means being a voice and an advocate for children, particularly those who have been delt a difficult hand. She feels dutybound to stand with them, fight for them and help them meet milestones on their path to success and independence. The wins, whether large or small, along with the smiles, laughs and tears of joy, make the hardships worthwhile.

Jessica Carter: “These families are constantly going to appointments where doctors and specialists are telling them what their kids can’t do, what they won’t ever do, what’s wrong with them, what procedure they need next, etc.”

“These families are constantly going to appointments where doctors and specialists are telling them what their kids can’t do, what they won’t ever do, what’s wrong with them, what procedure they need next, etc.,” Carter says. “Here, we focus on what they CAN do, and build on that, as well as what they like to do and how we can use that to build functional skills, bond with the children and become advocates for the families.”

‘JUST DO IT’

The determined wife, mom and stepmom aspires to bring at least thee additional clinics to the Coast — as well as more community events, more advocacy, more fun and more inclusion.

Although she started a growing business by the age of 30, Carter hasn’t always been so self-assured. Her dyslexia has caused a lifelong struggle with traditional education. An agoraphobia diagnosis led her to be medically released from college in her second year. However, Carter not only overcame her panic disorder, but she also finished college on time despite taking a semester off. To other goaloriented women, Carter offers some simple advice: “Just do it.”

“I’ve been scared; I’ve been doubted, and I’ve doubted myself,” she says. “But with the support of my family and my staff, I continue to make these dreams a reality.”

FROM SHIPPING CONTAINERS TO

modern masterpiece

Step inside Jason and Page Kennedy’s unconventional Bay St. Louis dream home

Not everyone has enough imagination to turn four shipping containers into a dream house, but Jason and Page Kennedy aren’t your average homeowners.

The couple’s Bay St. Louis property, which was nearly seven years in the making, is an apt reflection of their shared taste: interesting, unconventional and thoroughly contemporary. Furrowed ceilings and walls are one of just a few reminders of what the home once was.

“What makes it special and unique is that it’s the only one; there’s not another like it,” says Page, a registered nurse at

Memorial Hospital Gulfport.

The pair married in 2010, and once the children were grown, they decided to downsize from their large lake house in Bogalusa, Louisiana. Page had been triathlon training locally in 2017 when they connected with the Bay’s artsy, laid-back vibe.

“We fell in love with Bay St. Louis, and I decided to buy a lot that same November: 4 Chantilly Terrace,” recalls Jason, who has an extensive construction background and acted as the project’s de-facto general contractor. He continued in his career despite losing his right leg below the knee

in a work-related accident

“Very young and very determined, I was fitted with a prosthesis and haven’t let this stop me,” he says.

The house provides undeniable proof of his resolve and expertise. Jason and Page have invested plenty of blood, sweat and tears, not to mention dollars, into their charming home over the years, but they’ve been rewarded with a one-of-a-kind dwelling that boasts three bedrooms, two baths and 1,700 square feet of living space.

“We did not lose anything that is in a traditional home,” Page says, “and we actually gained quite a bit of uniqueness.”

‘NOT AS EASY AS THEY SOUND’

Always on the lookout for something new and different, Jason was intrigued by a California container home he saw featured on HGTV in 2017. He assumed Page would shoot down the idea, but she was on board.

“I like anything that’s not cookie cutter,” she says, adding that they’d previously lived in an unusual home.

Joking that his wife calls him ‘bougie,” Jason admits to being drawn to a certain aesthetic.

“I love the modern look,” he says. “Everything is straight lines; everything is crisp and clean.”

The pair acquired the containers for their Bay St. Louis home, measuring 40-by-8 feet and originally aqua blue, from a New Orleans shipyard. Buying brand-new containers was an option, but Jason liked the imperfections and character of the used ones.

To execute their vision, the Kennedys worked with Bay St. Louis-based Unabridged Architecture, which was enthusiastic about the project while also recognizing the practical challenges.

“We had known about container houses and had known they are very popular, but I think we also realized that they’re not as easy as they sound,” says Unabridged architect and co-owner John Anderson. “It’s not like you can just park some container out there and live in it. I mean, I guess you could, but that really doesn’t make for a special place.

“So (the approach was) yes, let’s try it. Let’s work with the idea, but let’s also understand the limitations, the parameters and the things we have to do to build it structurally here, especially in a hurricane-prone place.”

OVERCOMING OBSTACLES

One major benefit of the home, which Jason and Page moved into in 2022, is that it’s more storm and fire resistant than a typical house. On the downside, because they’re long and skinny with low ceilings, shipping containers have inherent constraints as a building material, according to Anderson.

There are two ways to overcome these issues, he says, both of which were used in the Kennedys’ home: one is putting smaller rooms like bathrooms and laundry rooms inside the containers, and the other is putting the containers side by side, cutting holes and reframing.

“The third thing we did in this house was we said we really don’t want the containers out in the weather, given how much it rains here,” Anderson adds, “and we put an umbrella-like roof over the whole top of the container space.”

There were plenty of other hurdles to clear, too. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the supply chain in the middle of construction. The budget ballooned well past Jason’s $150,000 estimate, and $3,500 was spent on nuts, bolts and washers alone. Because there’s no other house like it, and thus nothing to compare it to, the couple could only secure a $100,000 personal loan. Getting insurance and securing the proper permitting was difficult, too, to say the least.

Then there were other obstacles that a container-home owner may not anticipate, like having to cut and weld all doors, windows and light fixtures into the metal container. And because metal sweats, Jason explains, more expensive spray foam insulation was the only option.

Nonetheless, the project turned out largely how Anderson expected: something of a masterpiece.

“The central space, from the front door, through the kitchen/dining area and to the back is sort of the heart of the house, and we really didn’t want that heart to feel like you were stuffed inside of a container,” he says. “We wanted it to

be open and expressive and full of life, and I think that’s the biggest success of the house.”

‘A

BEAUTFUL

TREASURE ALL YOUR OWN’

Jason’s favorite part of the property is ironically not indoors, but rather the spacious back porch. A row of large windows makes the outdoor space feel like an extension of the kitchen.

“Football season is the best; everybody comes over and hangs out,” Jason says. “Everyone knows that on Saturdays, we’ll be on the back porch watching college, and on Sundays, we’ll be watching the pros.” Guests often are impressed and surprised by the number of people who can congregate comfortably when the couple hosts birthdays, holidays and other get-togethers.

Since moving in, the Kennedys have added threedimensional wall art to the master bedroom wall and a wallpaper accent to the master bedroom vanity area — in addition to many other tweaks. But no matter how much they accomplish, they say the house will always be a work in progress.

The pair advises others who are contemplating a container home to do lots of research and know what they’re getting into; the cost may exceed your expectations, and the reality may take you out of your comfort zone.

“But in the end,” Page adds, “you will end up with a beautiful treasure all your own.”

How the minimalism trend is taking root on the Coast Dwellsmall

The dwell small trend is taking foundation in South Mississippi, with several companies building everything from container homes to tiny homes across the Coast and surrounding area. Today’s homebuyers are thinking beyond the white picket fence, driven by factors like affordability, sustainability and less maintenance.

WHAT IS THE DWELL SMALL TREND?

You’re not imagining it; American homes, overall, are getting smaller. The Wall Street Journal has reported that new single-family home sizes have decreased by 10 percent since 2018. So why are more and more of today’s homebuyers going for a minimal lifestyle? For starters, it makes economic sense; real estate prices and the cost of living are rising, so homeowners are looking to cut expenses. They’re also more environmentally conscious than ever and eager to reduce their carbon footprint.

Then there’s the fact that today’s young adults are more mobile than previous generations, and more focused on experiences than possessions. This makes smaller homes that are easier to move or sell appealing. Meanwhile, the aging population is looking to downsize, and the number of single-

person households and smaller families is increasing.

Brandon Elliott, President of Elliott Homes, notes that inflation has eroded many Americans’ savings and financial stability. As the cost of living has surged, income levels have not kept pace, leaving many unable to afford a home or even rent. Mortgage rates climbing from 3% to 7% have further strained budgets, leading to increased credit card debt and reliance on home equity.

Retiring baby boomers are among the hardest hit, according to Elliott, as some 60 million of them are grappling with reduced savings despite holding record home equity.

“Additionally, 34 million fully or partially remote workers with young kids are struggling to find affordable single-family homes with more space and a yard,” Elliott says, “adding to the housing market’s complexities.”

CONTAINER HOMES

Frank Wilem, president of Bloxx Building, notes that container homes have all the advantages of a trailer or motor home, but they’re built from four tons of steel — making them much more durable and permanent.

“If they’re built correctly, they can last a long time; bridges built out of corten steel are built to last for 100 years or more,” Wilem says. “You’re looking at something that’s affordable, yet durable and rugged, and in our area more able to withstand the storms that we have.”

Holly Lemoine-Raymond, broker and owner with HL Raymond Properties, is another believer in container homes and has been deeply involved in many innovative projects along the Coast. Describing herself as a driving force behind these projects, from conceptualizing the designs to overseeing construction and marketing, LemoineRaymond says she has paired with BLOXX “to create sustainable, affordable and luxurious living options using containers.”

“My passion for unique, industrial modern designs and creating luxurious yet functional living spaces led me to venture into container homes,” Lemoine-Raymond adds. “The versatility and sustainability of container homes intrigued me, and I saw an opportunity to bring something fresh and innovative to the housing market on the Coast.”

WHAT TO CONSIDER

While small dwellings offer several benefits, prospective owners should be prepared for some tradeoffs and challenges. For instance, container-home owners will have to navigate zoning issues, Lemoine-Raymond cautions, as regulations can vary significantly by location.

“Typically, you’ll need to secure a building permit, and in some cases, a zoning permit as well,” she explains. “It’s crucial to check local zoning laws and building codes early in the planning process to ensure compliance and avoid potential roadblocks.”

As for financing, while it’s available to container homes, Lemoine-Raymond acknowledges that it can be harder to secure than a traditional home loan. However, some lenders specialize in alternative housing and can offer loans tailored to container home projects.

“Additionally, finding contractors experienced in container home construction can be tricky,” she says. “However, the benefits are numerous: container homes are eco-friendly, cost-effective, and incredibly durable. They offer a unique aesthetic and can be customized to fit a variety of lifestyles and needs.”

A TREND WITH STAYING POWER

There’s every reason to believe the dwell small trend is more than just a passing fad, it’s a reflection of shifting values and priorities, and one that seems to be ramping up rather than slowing down. One 2020 survey revealed that more than half of Americans would consider living in a tiny home, citing affordability and efficiency as the top reasons. Google Trends data also shows a steady increase in interest in tiny homes since 2011.

REFINANCING FOR DEBT

CONSOLIDATION?

LOOK BEYOND YOUR MORTGAGE RATE

The rate on your home loan is not the only one to consider when you’re refinancing for debt consolidation.

HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? HERE ARE THREE WAYS:

1. The blended or total real rate of interest for your mortgage plus other debt may be higher than for your current mortgage alone.

Managing consumer debt efficiently is challenging these days. Interest rates on everything from cars to credit cards are higher than they’ve been for some time. Average rates on existing credit card debt have risen from the midteens to over 21% in 2024.

With rates this high, it can take almost 30 years to pay off your balance when you make the minimum payments. Depending on how much debt you have, consolidating credit card and other consumer debt using equity in your home can be smart. This is true even if current mortgage rates are higher than what you’re paying now.

2. With a lower total rate of interest, you can pay more toward your balance and less for interest.

3. If you used your debt for home improvements, it’s possible equity financing will be tax deductible (always check with your tax pro).

The future is NOW TOP 2024 HOME DESIGN TRENDS

Home construction is constantly advancing, with fresh design trends cropping up to meet modern tastes and lifestyles. Aesthetic appeal, sustainability and efficiency are key influences in new builds. Here are some of the hottest trends making waves in 2024:

SUSTAINABILITY AND WELLNESS

Homebuilders are going with eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient features like windows and appliances. They’re also focusing on wellness with health-conscious amenities like air and water purification systems, non-toxic materials and plenty of natural light.

This trend reflects the growing appeal of concepts that blur the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces by introducing natural elements from nature, such as plants and water features, to create a healthier, more balanced living environment.

SMART HOME INTEGRATION

Modern homes embrace smart technology more than ever, making life easier and more enjoyable. Imagine having voiceactivated systems, automated lighting, climate control options and advanced security measures all at your fingertips. These tech-savvy features add convenience and boost energy efficiency, enhance safety and let you manage your home from virtually anywhere.

AGING-IN-PLACE DESIGN

Seniors are the fastest-growing demographic in the United States, which is one reason why modern homes are evolving to offer more comfort and independence. Single-story homes with wider doorways, slip-resistant flooring, lever handles and accessible bathroom showers are becoming the standard.

FLEXIBLE SPACES

As remote work and flexible living become more common, homes must be versatile. Popular features include home offices and multipurpose rooms, allowing for spaces like an exercise room, home theater or guest rooms.

SIMPLICITY REIGNS

Embrace the ongoing minimalist design trend with clean lines, neutral color palettes and spacious, uncluttered areas. Open floor plans and smart storage solutions add functionality while creating a contemporary living space.

Acadian Homes

OUTDOOR LIVING AREAS

Outdoor areas have become essential in home design. Patios, decks and gardens are crafted as extensions of indoor living spaces. Comfortable seating arrangements with outdoor kitchens and fire pits create the ideal setting for relaxation and entertaining.

MODERN RUSTIC

Fusing elements with rustic touches such as exposed beams, brick walls and natural wood features lend a cozy charm to living spaces. This blend creates a welcoming ambiance that strikes a balance between traditional warmth and contemporary style.

BOLD COLORS AND TEXTURES

While neutral tones are still popular, bold colors and textures are making a comeback. Accent walls, colorful tiles and unique textures add personality and vibrancy to interiors. Homeowners are not afraid to experiment with color, creating visually striking and eclectic environments.

WET ROOM BATHS

One of my favorite contemporary design trends, these stylish open spaces seamlessly integrate the shower area with the rest of the bathroom, doing away with traditional shower stalls or bathtubs to create a sleek, minimalist look. Not only do wet rooms look amazing, but they’re also super functional, making the most of your space and improving accessibility. The entire room is waterproof, so you don’t have to worry about splashes or water damage; just give the floor a quick rinse for easy cleaning. With proper air circulation, mold and mildew are kept at bay. On top of that, wet rooms bring a spa-like vibe to your home.

HELPING HOMEOWNERS BUILD THEIR DREAMS Coastal Contracting

In the heart of Long Beach, Coastal Contracting is striving to reflect dedication and quality when it comes to custom homes and major renovations. Founded in 2012, this family-run business has been guided by a passion for construction and a commitment to making clients’ dream homes a reality.

President Stephen Carlson’s foray into the home-building field began long before Coastal Contracting was established. As a police officer, Carlson spent his free time building cabinets and assisting family and friends with their home renovation projects. These experiences ignited his desire to help others realize their vision of home.

With unwavering support from his wife, Cherie, his son, Nicholas, and other loved ones, Carlson transformed this passion into a thriving construction business.

“At Coastal Contracting, every decision is guided by our client’s desires, ensuring their homes are as unique as their dreams,” Carlson says.

INNOVATIVE NEW OFFERINGS

He adds that Coastal Contracting’s mission is to deliver exceptional craftsmanship and unparalleled professionalism in every project. The firm’s expertise lies in constructing personalized homes from scratch, offering home building and renovation services encompassing architectural plans, surveys and the support of a professional designer for interior finishes. This commitment to quality and attention to detail has made the business’s custom homes and upscale renovations highly sought after.

A recent collaboration with a new home specialist and home designer has led to an innovative service for homeowners: consultations for those who are deciding whether to build new or renovate existing homes. A soon-to-be-launched home plans and design center, featuring the latest trends and innovations in home design, are exciting additions to Coastal Contracting’s offerings.

NOT JUST ‘SELLING’ HOMES

What truly sets Coastal Contracting apart is its commitment to customer satisfaction, according to Carlson. Clients want more than just a house or a renovation. They seek a partner who educates and guides them through the homebuilding process, and Coastal Contracting’s role is ensuring that each client feels valued and heard.

“I prefer not to ‘sell’ homes; I educate home buyers to help them make the best decisions on their upcoming build,” Carlson says. “Early on, some of the best advice I received was to focus on building a brand committed to each client rather than worrying about sales, and I take that to heart.”

Looking to the future, Carlson aims to continue growing Coastal Contracting’s reputation for excellence and ensuring that the business — like its builds — stands the test of time. By fostering solid and lasting relationships with clients, designers, architects, subcontractors and trade partners, Coastal Contracting is more than just a business; it’s a vehicle for helping people build their dreams.

TIPS AND TRICKS TO COZY UP YOUR HOME

Jennifer Miller is a certified interior designer, professional home stager and CEO of Jennuwine Design, Sophisticated Staging. Connect with her at info@ DBJfirm.com, www. DesignbyJennuwine.com or (228) 285-1535.

As we await the arrival of autumn’s cooler temperatures and crisp beauty, it’s the perfect time to refresh your home decor. Here are some inspiring ideas and practical tips to make your home warm and inviting for the new season:

EMBRACE EARTHY TONES AND RICH TEXTURES

Earthy tones and rich textures are at the forefront of this season’s interior design trends. Think warm hues like terracotta, deep greens and rich browns. These colors evoke a sense of nature, creating a cozy and grounded atmosphere.

Consider painting an accent wall in a deep, moody shade or incorporating these colors through accessories like throw pillows, blankets and rugs. Textures like chunky knits, velvet and woven fabrics add depth and coziness to any space. A velvet sofa or a knitted throw can instantly make your living room feel more inviting.

LAYER LIGHTING FOR A WARM AMBIANCE

Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood for any season, and fall is no exception. As the days grow shorter, layered lighting becomes essential. Combine ambient, task and accent lighting for a warm, welcoming vibe. Start with a statement chandelier or pendant light as your main illumination source, then add

table lamps and floor lamps with warm-toned bulbs to create cozy corners for reading or relaxing. Don’t forget to incorporate candles and fairy lights to add a touch of magic and intimacy. Batteryoperated candles are a safe alternative and come in various realistic styles.

INCORPORATE NATURE-INSPIRED DECOR

Bringing elements of the outdoors indoors is a timeless fall decor strategy for a reason. This year, focus on incorporating natural materials like wood, stone and rattan. A rustic wooden coffee table, a stone fireplace or rattan accent chairs can instantly add a touch of the outdoors to your home.

Additionally, consider decorating with seasonal elements like pumpkins, gourds and dried flowers. Create stunning centerpieces with a mix of these items or place them strategically around your home for a cohesive fall theme. Wreaths made of dried leaves and flowers can be a beautiful addition

to your front door, welcoming guests with seasonal charm.

ADD COZY TEXTILES AND SOFT FURNISHINGS

To truly make your home feel like a fall haven, focus on adding cozy textiles and soft furnishings. Swap out your summer linens for heavier fabrics like flannel, wool and faux fur. A flannel duvet cover or a faux fur throw blanket can make your bedroom feel like a luxurious retreat.

Layer your seating areas with plenty of cushions in autumnal colors and patterns. Mix and match different textures and sizes for a visually appealing, comfortable arrangement. Area rugs in warm tones also can help anchor a room and provide a soft surface underfoot, making your space feel more intimate and inviting.

DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF SCENT

Scent can be your most effective means of creating a cozy fall atmosphere. Fragrances like cinnamon, clove, pumpkin spice and vanilla can evoke the essence of the season and make your home feel and smell sweet.

Use scented candles, reed diffusers or essential oil diffusers to fill your home with these autumnal aromas. Place them in high-traffic areas like the living room, kitchen and entryway to ensure your home smells inviting throughout.

DISPLAY SEASONAL ARTWORK AND DECOR

Switching out your artwork and decor for the season can be a simple, yet effective, way to refresh your home. Look for pieces that feature fall landscapes, abstract designs in warm hues or seasonal motifs like leaves and pumpkins. Incorporate these elements into your existing decor by swapping out picture frames, adding seasonal prints or creating a gallery wall with a mix of autumn-themed artwork. This approach allows you to celebrate the season without a complete overhaul of your interior design.

CREATE COZY READING NOOKS

Find a quiet corner in your home and transform it into a snug retreat with a comfortable chair, a soft throw blanket and a side table for your favorite books and a warm drink. Add a floor or table lamp with a warm glow to enhance the cozy ambiance. This dedicated space can become your go-to spot for relaxing and unwinding as the weather gets cooler.

Ultimately, fall decor should be both stylish and comforting. It’s easier than you think to transform your home into a warm, inviting haven that captures the spirit of the season. Whether you’re looking to make subtle changes or embark on a full-scale makeover, enjoy creating a space that feels perfectly autumnal.

MUM’S THE WORD

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE ICONIC FLOWER OF FALL

Chrysanthemums are the quintessential flower of fall. Who doesn’t remember the huge mums worn by their high school homecoming court? How about the orange and yellow nursery mums adorning many Coast porches each Halloween?

Admittedly, I’ve killed many a potted mum not intentionally, of course, but from sheer neglect or enthusiasm to keep them alive.

Almost as soon as school starts, nursery chrysanthemums are filling the supermarkets, big box stores and local nurseries. Their availability symbolizes “fall” to many of us; hence, there’s a tendency to purchase them early. Nursery mums have been “forced” to bloom early, allowing them to reach market sooner. Whenever and wherever you buy your mums, there are hundreds of varieties to choose from, and some types will survive our mild winters here on the Coast behaving as perennials. In fact, they can be planted outside in the garden to grow and bloom again in subsequent years. Some varieties will only survive until frost, even in our area.

IF YOU’D LOVE TO MOVE YOUR MUMS FROM A FALL PLANTER INTO YOUR GARDEN, CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:

• Plant a cold-hardy perennial chrysanthemum that’s marked to withstand low temperatures.

• Early spring is the best time to plant mums to give them time to become well established before winter.

• Southerners can enjoy mum blooms in spring and again in fall, as equal days and nights (12 hours each) will cause them to bloom twice.

• Select a planting site in full sun away from large trees and shrubs. Mums require rich, well-draining soil. Standing water will cause the roots to rot.

• If you’re planting mums in pots to beautify your patio or porch, be aware that lights at night from security lamps or streetlights may interfere with blooming.

• Set mums 18-36 inches apart, depending on mature size.

• Plant in the ground the same depth as in the original pot.

• Water and keep them evenly moist.

• If you’re growing mums in pots, make sure there are drain holes. If the container doesn’t have any holes, you’ll have to make some. Mums in pots may need to be watered daily, or even twice a day. Pots dry out very quickly.

• Mums are heavy feeders. A monthly application of a balanced fertilizer is needed for a thriving plant.

• Mulch your mums to conserve moisture and inhibit weeds.

• Pinch back stems to create a bushier plant. When new shoots are 3-4 inches tall, pinch off the top, leaving two to three leaves on the shoot. Continue pinching every two to three weeks until early August, when buds develop.

• Stop fertilizing when flower buds develop.

• Switch to a high-nitrogen fertilizer after buds have set.

• Do not cut back mums in the fall. The dead growth insulates the roots. Cut off dead stems and leaves after the first green shoots emerge in the spring.

STEP 1

Make sure you measure your space before you start. Decide how many vertical slats you want and how tall you want the ledge to sit. Take care to space your verticals around any outlets, making sure they will be equal distance apart. Make a cut list to take to your local hardware store.

STEP 2

Add a border at the bottom, above the trim. This step is completely optional, but we did this to give the verticals a smooth place to sit. We also knew we didn’t want to paint the trim, so it gave us a nice separation. We used 1-by-1s we found at Home Depot. They were only 4 feet long, so we used three and pieced them together. Make sure to sand the ends for a cleaner finish. We attached the 1-by-1s to the wall with a strip of liquid nails (glue) and brad nails.

STEP 3

Measure and cut your verticals. Because we used 1-by-1s on the bottom, the 1-by-4s butted up nicely to the bottom. Be precise in

DIY: Upgrade your entryway

Sprucing up your home’s entryway is a great way to add some character and show off your personal style. Sometimes you can do this with decor, a cute table, plants or some artwork, but I’m going to show you how to take it to the next level with an accent wall. You can customize this to fit your home’s style by changing the design and/or color. My friend and I did her entryway accent wall in just a day, completely transforming her entryway into a beautiful, functional, and welcoming space. Don’t hesitate to get creative with your pattern and color to really make your project pop.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

• Lumber (We used 1-by-1s on the very bottom, 1-by-4s for the vertical slats, a 1-by-4 for the top horizontal slat and a 1-by-2 for the ledge.)

• Brad nails (optional) Liquid nails (or a similar product, found at your hardware store) Caulk

• Spackle Paint (we used the color Bay Water by Behr in eggshell finish) Paintbrush and roller

• Painters’ tape Safety goggles

your cuts, ensuring that each slat is exactly the same height so that when you go to add your ledge, it sits flush.

Use liquid nails and brad nails to attach the vertical slats. Make sure you’re plumb (level), using your hand leveler or laser level, and spaced evenly. We started in the middle and worked our way out to the sides since we have five vertical slats total.

STEP 4

Measure and cut your horizontal top piece; attach the same way you did before. Measure and cut your ledge. For this piece, we used liquid nails on the wall side and on the top of the horizontal piece, then used the nail gun to attach it to the horizontal 1-by-4 so the nails didn’t go into the wall for this step.

STEP 5

Caulk all your seams and spackle your nail holes. Once that dries, lightly sand the

• Tape measure Brad nailer (optional, but this is a low-budget way to attach the slats with minimal damage)

spackle smooth. Dust off your space, and you are ready to paint.

STEP 6

Tape off and paint! Our space only required a quart of paint, and we did two coats.

*Tip: Using the proper caulk on your seams will help give the project a professional finish. Sometimes changes in weather can cause wood to expand or shrink, cracking the paint. Caulk will help with this in the long run.

JUST KEEP GOING’

Stephanie Duprey Mathes’ survivor story

"I travel a lot, and I just keep going. I know I cannot stop. If I stop and succumb, lupus wins."

Biloxi- born Stephanie Duprey Mathes works as the director of technical assistance and training for a Washington, D.C.-based national organization. Previously, she was the co-founder, COO and CEO of CLIMB CDC — a local workforce development organization.

MY HEALTH CHALLENGE

I have several auto immune diseases, specifically lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. I became ill suddenly in 2016 with swelling, pain and an unbelievable amount of fatigue. I thought it was from eating Doritos and that it would pass, but it didn’t. I quickly gained over 25 pounds in fluid. The pain prevented me from being able to walk on my own, open a can of soda or perform normal tasks like blow-drying my hair. The pain was horrific; my husband and I thought for sure I was dying. Heat helped, so throughout the night, we moved large heating pads to wherever hurt the most. I would black out suddenly without warning. My husband would drive me to work and sit in my office so I could fulfill work responsibilities. I was the CEO of CLIMB, and not working wasn’t an option.

The night before my diagnosis, I would have amputated my own leg because the pain was terrifying. I visited my primary doctor several times, and although all the tests were normal, he knew something was wrong.

He called another doctor and asked him to see me quickly. He ran a lot of tests and sent me to another doctor, a rheumatologist in Gulfport, who was my saving grace. She told me my diagnosis was lupus, and neither my husband nor I had ever heard of it. We were just happy it wasn’t cancer. Although lupus isn’t cancer, it is not quickly remedied; we soon began an unfamiliar, scary journey that included seven-hour transfusions at the hospital, medication that makes your hair fall out, steroids, weight gain and an inability to do your normal activities.

Mathes pictured at Gulf Coast Woman’s 100 Successful Women to Know event.

MY APPROACH

I grieved at first because I always have been independent and capable, and suddenly, I was neither. I was grateful because I had a wonderful husband, children and friends who I could depend on. I felt blessed because God was always present. Some people with lupus go years before being diagnosed, and it was six weeks for me. Some people can’t afford medication and treatment, and I never paid a dime out of pocket. Some people do not have support, and I do. Lupus sometimes attacks vital organs, and it did not in my case.

MY TREATMENT

I have been on several different medications, including infusions at the hospital and weekly shots and pills. The trick with lupus is finding one you respond to. People can live a normal lifespan with lupus, but the pain can make you question that. Sometimes, I think I cannot live like this forever. At times like that, I pray for strength and understanding, and God always responds. I get a new regimen from my amazing doctors and keep going.

THE HARDEST PART

The hardest part is not being able to do all the things physically that I want to do. I am weaker than before. I am more tired than before. It takes me longer to recuperate and recover from the smallest things. The most rewarding thing is knowing God is always present, and lupus reminds me of that constantly. The love and support of others, especially my family and husband, is my blessing. I also have had many opportunities to talk with people who were recently diagnosed to share what I’ve learned and encourage them.

WHAT LIFE IS LIKE NOW

Life is slower, which some will think is crazy because I go all the time and I am very active in my community. I travel a lot, and I just keep going. I know I cannot stop. If I stop and succumb, lupus wins.

HOW THIS EXPERIENCE CHANGED ME

It has changed everything. I just fight and seek out all the assistance I can: personal trainers for strength, massages for pain relief. Some days, I can’t walk because the pain is so bad. Other days, it’s better, but it is never gone.

I am most proud of the fact that I have learned how to keep going. I am not a survivor; I am surviving every day. I live with pain and fatigue, and yet I keep going.

MY ADVIDE TO OTHERS

Lean into God and family; it does not make you weak. Be kind to yourself. Give yourself the same grace you would give another person. Find every way you can to continue living this beautiful life we have been gifted. This is not our forever home, nor our forever life.

Gene therapy

A BEACON OF HOPE FOR SUFFERERS OF SICKLE CELL DISEASE

Sickle cell disease is a debilitating, progressive and life-shortening disease. Treatments can decrease pain and prolong survival, but even so, the disease is often devastating. Until recently, the only potential curative option was a bone marrow transplant, which requires a donor, carries significant risk and only is an option for a fraction of patients. However, last December exciting, long overdue progress happened when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved two new lifealtering treatments for SCD.

WHAT IS SCD?

SCD affects approximately 100,000 people in the U.S., most of whom are of African ancestry. Approximately one of every 365 Black or African American babies born in this country will have SCD. It is a disorder that affects hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. Normal red blood cells are round and flexible, allowing them to flow through the body’s small blood vessels and deliver oxygen to our tissues and organs. With SCD, there’s an abnormal form of hemoglobin called hemoglobin S. This changes the red blood cells’ shape to a crescent or sickle shape and causes red blood cells to become rigid, lack flexibility and stick together. This can block blood flow, preventing the distribution of oxygen throughout the body and causing pain and organ damage, such as stroke, heart failure and liver failure. The severity can vary among patients, and those with severe SCD have a decrease in life expectancy of 30 years on average.

The newly approved treatments, Lyfgenia and Casgevy, are gene therapies. Gene therapy replaces or modifies abnormal genes to treat or cure disease.

A NEW TREATMENT FRONTEIR

The newly approved treatments, Lyfgenia and Casgevy, are gene therapies. Gene therapy replaces or modifies abnormal genes to treat or cure disease. During gene therapy for sickle cell disease, cells are removed from the blood, re-engineered in a special facility and returned to the body through infusion. The treatment changes parts of patients’ DNA so they can create healthy, normally shaped red blood cells, mitigating the pain and organ damage. In the Lyfgenia trial, 97% of patients were free of pain crisis for the 24 months of follow up. With Casgevy, 94% of patients saw this improvement. These gene therapies are now available at a limited number of centers in the U.S. The challenge over the next few years will be broadening access, but this still is an astonishing advance and beacon of hope for those who suffer from this painful, lifelong disease.

HOME GYMS

7 REASONS WHY THEY’RE THE ULTIMATE FITNESS GAME-CHANGER

Ever find yourself caught between wanting a good workout and not wanting to leave the comfort of your home? Well, you’re not alone, and there’s a perfect solution: the home gym! Creating a workout space at home can be a total game-changer, making it easier to stay fit, save time and feel fabulous — all without stepping out your front door. Let’s delve into the amazing benefits of home gyms and why they might just become your new favorite place.

1. CONVENIENCE AT ITS BEST

One of the biggest perks of a home gym is convenience. No more commuting, waiting for machines or worrying about the facility’s hours; your gym is just a few steps away and always open whenever you’re ready to sweat it out. Whether it’s a quick morning session, a lunchtime stretch or a late-night workout, you can exercise on your own schedule. Plus, you never have to worry about packing a gym bag; everything you need is right there.

2. A CUSTOMIZED ENVIRONMENT

Your home gym is your sanctuary, which means you can customize it exactly how you want. Whether you prefer a minimalist setup with just a yoga mat and some dumbbells or a full-fledged setup with a treadmill, resistance bands and a weight bench, it’s up to you. Play your favorite music, set the lighting just right and decorate with motivational quotes or serene décor — whatever inspires you to move and groove!

3.

COST-EFFECTIVE IN THE LONG RUN

While setting up a home gym might require an initial investment, it can

save you money in the long run. No more monthly gym memberships, expensive fitness classes or commuting costs. You can start small and gradually add equipment as your budget allows. Plus, with the plethora of free workout videos and apps available online, you can access a variety of classes and training programs without spending a dime.

4. COMFORT AND PRIVACY

Working out at home offers a level of comfort and privacy that you just can’t get at a public gym. No more feeling self-conscious about your fitness level; your home gym is a judgment-free zone. You can try new exercises, focus on your form and progress at your own pace without any distractions. It’s your personal space to experiment, grow and find what works best for you.

5. TIME EFFICIENCY

With a home gym, you eliminate travel time and the hassle of getting out the door. This means you can fit in quick, effective workouts even on the busiest days. Whether you have 15 minutes or an hour to spare, you can make the most of your time with efficient, high-intensity workouts or relaxing yoga sessions. It’s all about making fitness fit into your life, not the other way around.

6. FAMILY-FRIENDLY FITNESS

Having a home gym makes it easier to incorporate fitness into family time. Get the kids involved in a fun workout or have a partner workout session. It’s a great way to set a positive example and encourage a healthy lifestyle for everyone in the household. Plus, you can keep an eye on little ones while getting your exercise in, which is a huge win for busy moms.

7.

FLEXIBILITY AND VARIETY

A home gym gives you the freedom to explore different types of workouts. From strength training and cardio to yoga and Pilates, you can switch up your routine whenever you want. With the internet at your fingertips, you have access to endless workout videos and tutorials to keep things fresh and exciting. You can even try virtual classes or use apps with AI trainers for a more personalized experience.

Ready to set up your home gym? Creating one doesn’t require a lot of space or money — just a bit of creativity and motivation. Start with the essentials, like a mat, a set of dumbbells and resistance bands, and build from there. Remember, it’s all about creating a space that works for you and makes working out enjoyable.

So, if you’re looking for a way to make fitness more accessible, flexible and fun, a home gym might just be your perfect solution. It’s time to take control of your fitness journey from the comfort of your own home. Let’s get moving!

Growing older, growing stronger

TIPS FOR A LIFE WELL-LIVED

September is Healthy Aging Month — a time to focus on growing older in a way that promotes health and function for the highest quality of life in our later years. The national theme is “powered by connection” and focuses on the relationships and support systems that contribute to long-term health and wellbeing.

Besides regular visits with a healthcare provider, we can incorporate many simple things into our day-to-day lives to optimize our minds and bodies as we age.

NUTRITION IS KEY

Avoiding processed foods ensures we get the maximum nutritional benefit from our diet. Eating vegetables in a more natural state, or broiled instead of boiled in water, helps to retain their nutritional value. Adequate protein intake from meats, beans, fish and nuts helps our nervous system stay sharp and our muscles to be maintained. Certain medical conditions call for specific diets, but the Mediterranean diet is a great place to start for most people wishing to optimize their nutrition, particularly older adults.

KICK BAD HABITS WHILE YOU ARE YOUNG

Tobacco use in any form causes small blood vessels to constrict, impeding blood flow to the kidneys, heart, brain and spinal cord. Long-term smoking or vaping causes irreversible lung obstruction that will affect the quality of life and breathing in later years, even if the changes are not evident now. Limit alcohol use to moderate amounts, and if your bad habit is sugary or processed foods, start looking for healthier options. The more you do now, the better you will feel later.

REVERSE ENGINEER YOUR FITNESS

Think about your body and how you want it to function in the next five years. Perhaps you want to train for an athletic event, or maybe you just want to be able to bend over and tie your shoes without pain and shortness of breath. Now think about how to achieve that goal with a training schedule, daily walks, stretching and yoga. Incorporate a plan that will preserve or increase your body’s functionality. Write down the steps and chase your goals; you will never regret it.

NURTURE RELATIONSHIPS

Take the time to call old friends, make new ones and surround yourself with family and loved ones. Our mental health and wellbeing are greatly influenced by the people we spend the most time with, so make every interaction count. If you are curious about how to improve your health for the rest of your life, start the conversation with a primary care provider.

When my dad suffered a stroke, it was my turn to help him with important decisions, like making the right choice in rehabilitation. I asked the medical professionals that treated him who they trusted for the best care and outcomes. They referred us to a place that created a rehabilitation program

‘NO, I’M NOT OK’

Understanding suicide prevention in women

RECOGNIZING THE SIGNS

Suicide is complex, and its warning signs can vary. Common indicators include feelings of hopelessness, withdrawing from loved ones, drastic changes in behavior or mood and talk of feeling trapped or being a burden. Women also may show signs such as increased anxiety, depression or overwhelming stress from juggling multiple roles.

It’s essential to remember that these signs are not always overt. Sometimes, they manifest subtly, such as a drop in self-care or an unusual preoccupation with death or dying. As a friend, family member or colleague, being attuned to these changes can make a world of difference to the sufferer.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CONNECTION

September is Suicide Prevention Month, a perfect time to raise awareness, educate ourselves and commit to supporting those around us who may be struggling.

As a seasoned therapist, I’ve witnessed firsthand the silent battles many women fight. The conversation around mental health has thankfully become more open, yet there’s one topic that often remains hushed: suicide. Understanding and addressing this is crucial, particularly when we look at the unique challenges women face that can lead them to this dark path.

SELF-CARE ISN’T SELFISH

Women often put others’ needs above their own, leading to burnout and emotional exhaustion. Emphasizing self-care is essential in suicide prevention. This doesn’t just mean occasional pampering, but rather consistent, daily practices that nurture mental and emotional wellness. Women should be encouraged to engage in activities they enjoy and that bring peace. This could be something as simple as a quiet walk in nature, reading a book or practicing mindfulness and meditation. These activities can help reduce stress and provide a sense of calm and control.

PROFESSIONAL HELP AND THERAPY

Caring Professionals

One of the most powerful tools in suicide prevention is connection. Women particularly thrive on relationships and community. Encouraging open dialogue about feelings and mental health struggles can help diminish the stigma surrounding these issues. It’s OK to ask someone if she’s thinking about suicide; doing so doesn’t plant the idea in her head but rather opens up a path for her to share her struggles. Creating a supportive network is also vital. This network can be a combination of friends, family, mental health professionals and support groups. The presence of a robust support system can provide emotional safety nets that are crucial during challenging times.

Seeking professional help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Therapy provides a safe space for women to explore their thoughts and feelings without judgment. It can help them develop coping strategies, address underlying issues and build resilience. Various forms of therapy are available, from cognitive-behavioral therapy to more holistic approaches like art or music therapy. Finding the right fit can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes. Additionally, medication might be necessary for some, and it’s crucial to approach this without stigma.

CRISIS RESOURCES AND HOTLINES

Immediate help is available for those in crisis. The new crisis hotline, 988, provides 24/7 support. These resources can offer immediate assistance and connect individuals to local support services.

It’s also beneficial to have a crisis plan. This plan can include recognizing personal warning signs, identifying supportive contacts and having a list of coping strategies. Having a plan can provide a sense of preparedness and control during turbulent times.

CREATING A CULTURE OF AWARENESS AND SUPPORT

On a broader level, creating a culture that supports mental health awareness is vital. This involves educating communities about mental health, advocating for policies that support mental health services and fostering environments where people feel safe discussing their struggles. In workplaces, schools and community centers, implementing programs that promote mental health can make a significant impact. These programs can include workshops on stress management, resilience training and creating peer support groups. Suicide prevention in women is multifaceted, requiring a collective effort from individuals, communities and professionals. As a professional therapist, my message is clear: You are not alone. Reach out, speak up, and take the steps necessary to nurture your mental health. Your life is invaluable, and there is always hope, even in the darkest of times.

Which doctor do I choose?

HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT PRIMARY CARE PROVIDER FOR YOUR FAMILY

Gone

are the days of picking up the phone

book

and choosing

the doctor closest to your home or workplace. Today, people have access to more information about healthcare providers. We also have more options when it comes to choosing our primary care doctors. With all these choices, it can be difficult to know which physician is best for you and your family.

WHAT IS PRIMARY CARE?

Your primary care physician doesn’t just help when you are sick. He or she also helps keep you healthy the rest of the time. Primary care practitioners include internal medicine physicians, family medicine doctors and pediatricians.

Primary care services can include:

• Routine checkups, screenings and vaccinations

• Treating minor illnesses and injuries

• Prescribing medications

• Diagnosing and treating medical conditions

• Performing minor procedures

• Managing chronic illnesses

• Coordinating specialist care

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FAMILY MEDICINE, INTERNAL MEDICINE AND PEDIATRICS?

The main difference between primary care specialties is the age of the patients they treat. Pediatricians specialize in the care of newborns, infants, children and adolescents. Internal medicine practitioners only treat adults aged 18 years and older. Family medicine physicians treat patients of all ages.

Trained to manage the whole patient, family medicine physicians serve as your primary healthcare provider to diagnose, treat and follow up on a wide range of conditions. They even provide male- and female-specific services that you may think require a specialist. Some family medicine physicians provide care starting in infancy, so your whole family can see the same doctor.

Continuity of care throughout all life stages can make a big difference in health and wellbeing. This can be especially important for children who go through many physical, emotional and mental changes on their way to adulthood. Having a doctor who is familiar and trusted will help your whole family get the care and support they need.

Family medicine doctors may serve alongside nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses and other staff. Together, they provide team-based family care based on proven best practices. That’s what your family deserves.

SEPTEMBER’S MIXED MESSAGING ON WOMEN’S CANCERS

TEAL OR PURPLE?

FROM SINGING RIVER HEALTH SYSTEM

You’ve probably noticed that a visit to Newk’s Eatery usually comes with a teal cup during the month of September. But then you see pretty purple everything for events like Move4Her, a fundraising event supporting the Foundation for Women’s Cancer.

While you may feel the two colors are competing for their fair share of attention during September, do you know what they represent? We all know pink in October signifies breast cancer awareness. So let’s take a look at September’s colors, teal and purple, and their respective causes.

TEAL = OVARIAN CANCER

When you see teal ribbons in September, it’s a safe bet that these are aimed at raising awareness, funds for research and support for those affected by ovarian cancer during Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

Although Ovarian Cancer is relatively rare compared to others, patients generally have no symptoms or warning signs until it is in advanced stages, meaning that those who are diagnosed face steep odds.

There are no screening tests for ovarian cancer in asymptomatic patients, although a visit to a primary care provider or OB/GYN that includes a routine pap smear also includes a manual palpation (or feeling) of the ovaries, which could detect the presence of more significant masses.

PURPLE = GYNECOLOGIC CANCER

OK, so this is where it gets a little confusing. September is also Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month. The purple you see while out and about, thought admittedly less-commonly than teal, is in support of patients, research, treatment and awareness for gynecologic cancer.

Gynecologic cancer is an umbrella term for cancers of the female reproductive system. The Foundation for Women’s

Cancers groups these cancers into five subsets: ovarian, endometrial/uterine, cervical, vulvar and vaginal cancer. Each year, more than 110,000 women are diagnosed with gynecologic cancer. Some types can be screened for with tests like routine pap smears or even prevented in large part by HPV vaccines, such as cervical cancer. Others are sneakier, harder to detect and more difficult to treat.

HOW IT ALL FITS

In the same way that all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares, all ovarian cancer is gynecologic cancer, but not all gynecologic cancer is ovarian. While ovarian cancer is less common, it is highly deadly. And while gynecologic cancers are considered common, some types are more easily detected, diagnosed and treated than others.

OUR TAKE? OBSERVE BOTH

Whether you choose to wear teal, purple or a little bit of both, you’re showing support and love and raising awareness for cancers that affect the lives of thousands of women each year. Take some time this month to acknowledge with knowledge by learning more about gynecologic cancers.

Missing your pre-baby body?

CONSIDER A MOMMY MAKEOVER

For many moms, becoming pregnant and giving birth is thrilling. However, it can be discouraging to find that your body may not go back to normal, and diet and exercise often aren’t enough to counteract the post-childbirth changes. If this sounds familiar, you might consider undergoing a “mommy makeover” with a board-certified plastic surgeon.

WHAT IS A MOMMY MAKEOVER?

Mommy makeover refers to surgery of the breast and abdomen to correct common changes women see after giving birth and breastfeeding. It is an all-inclusive term for procedures like breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, liposuction, tummy tuck and labiaplasty. Because each body is unique, mommy makeovers are tailored to the woman and the changes she desires. Some common issues addressed include:

• Deflated, sagging breasts

• Loose, stretched abdominal skin

• Separated or bulging abdominal muscles or fascia

• Stubborn fat

• Vaginal or vulvar stretching

WHO QUALIFIES FOR A MOMMY MAKEOVER?

Generally, a mommy makeover is recommended for women who are least six months out from completing breastfeeding and are done childbearing. This is to decrease the risk of complications from the presence of milk in the breasts and to preserve long-term results. Patients who plan to have a breast lift, breast reduction or tummy tuck also will need to be nicotine free for several weeks before and after surgery.

WHAT IS RECOVERY LIKE?

Recovery from breast and abdominal surgery typically takes three to four weeks. This is the time required for your incisions and underlying musculature to heal before you can start exercising, lifting weights and resuming normal activities. Most patients will need to take 10-14 days off work, but this also will depend on their specific occupation and the surgical procedures they are having.

WHAT ARE THE FINANCING OPTIONS?

Insurance typically does not cover the procedures included in a mommy makeover, except for breast reduction for qualified patients. Your quote will include the surgeon fee, anesthesia fee, facility fee and postoperative care. Care Credit is accepted, along with all major credit cards or cash.

Patients who undergo a mommy makeover enjoy a restored pre-pregnancy body contour and enhanced self-esteem. For more information, see https://www. plasticsurgery.org/news/blog/what-is-included-in-amommy-makeover.

transitional trends

LOVING LINEN

Especially between seasons, linen is your friend forever and always! I’ve been loving linen that has a jean-like appearance. We all know jeans can feel heavy and hot, but linen will always feel easy and breezy. Linen dresses are an especially huge hit — including this Zara midi dress ($ 89.90, zara. com). It can be layered easily with any type of jacket and pairs well with boots or sneakers. There are so many ways to style this and make it work!

Going from summer to fall is one of my favorite fashion transitions! For starters, you finally get some relief from the high temperatures. Living on the Coast, heat is one of the most challenging obstacles when it comes to choosing what to wear, especially during the summer. But now that things are cooling off, don’t hesitate to layer and use items you already have in your closet.

Here are some of the biggest trends on my radar as we head into fall:

KNITS FOR THE WIN

One summer trend that you can easily carry into the fall is the knit craze. This year, knit dresses, tops, skirts and even matching sets have been the talk of the season. These items are so simple to incorporate into your fall ensembles because knits evoke a coziness that already aligns with fall vibes. For instance, what could feel more perfectly transitional than this fringed knit midi skirt from & Other Stories? ($129, https://www.stories.com)

Add an unlined open-knit piece to any outfit for texture and warmth, or wear a slip under the knit dresses that you wore to the beach last season. If it’s a knit top, you can pair it with a simple undershirt and jeans to complete the outfit.

NOT YOUR MOTHER’S CARDIGAN

Cardigans are an essential item in every closet. Sometimes they are just the icing on the cake of a fabulous fall outfit. I especially love the creativity designers are putting in to make them more flattering and stylish than your average cardigan. For example, the bow detail on Mango’s knit cardigan makes it a unique, stylish addition to your summer-tofall collection. Another favorite of mine is Anthropologie’s parachute cardigan ($188, anthropologie.com). It’s stylish and different, and you can pair it with jeans for a casual look or dress it up — a bomber jacket.

VERSATILE VESTS

You probably have noticed that vests are everywhere right now, and that’s great news because you can wear them year-round. For example, the soft piqué vest by Zara can be layered with any type of shirt or blouse on cooler days. If I’m not wearing a vest by itself, I tend to pair it with a lightweight, long-sleeved top. You can even add a lacy long-sleeved top underneath and complete the outfit with jeans and your favorite flat. It’s the perfect fall ensemble!

FLARE JEAN FIXATION

Everyone loves (and looks good) in flare jeans because they’re so flattering. They fit any body shape; the stretchier, the better!

STANDOUT SNEAKERS

Snap up a pair of sneakers with eye-catching embellishments, not to mention a comfortable fit. Pair them with any outfit, from dresses to jeans to dress pants, and prepare to be showered with compliments.

You can wear a great set of bangles anywhere, especially if you pick some that are soundless and waterproof. With proper care, your metal bangles and other bracelets will not tarnish.

Americana

A TRIED-AND-TRUE CLASSIC

Some styles are eternal. While fashion trends come and go, these stand the test of time. Americana is one of those trends. Our great country was built on hard work, family values and creating opportunity, which is reflected in a denim-centric look. It starts with a great-fitting pair of jeans. Classic styles like straight leg take you from season to season, as does as a great denim jacket. Choose a top that has a Western feel and flair, which evokes the great plains and settlers heading west to make a home. Make this look uniquely yours by adding your favorite Americana-inspired boots and jewelry.

When you’re wondering what to wear as we head into fall, pick some pieces that show pride in this great land we live in!

10beauty supplies you need

for back-to-school season

5. BEAUTY PENCILS AND PENS

eyeshadow as an eyeliner and fill in brows.

Beauty pencils and pens are makeup brushes that allow for a level of artistry to achieve a flawless look.

The kids are back in class, which means you’ll probably make at least one more shopping trip to grab all their essential supplies. And moms, you’ll be needing some supplies, too, to adapt to this busy time of year when you’re doing most things on the fly. The summer always seems to pass by too fast, so now that those school bells are ringing, I let’s explore some must-haves to add to your beauty arsenal:

1. BEAUTY ERASERS

Beauty erasers are products that remove impurities, moisturize skin and/or cover any blemishes and imperfections. These products can be anti-aging or natural.

• Foundation and concealer protect your skin from the environment while covering imperfections. CC creams are ideal for normal-to-dry skin because of their dewy finish. • Cream-to-powder foundations are excellent for combination-to-oily skin since they help to control shine. Powders can be worn alone or used to set liquid or cream-based foundations. Shade matching is more forgiving for CC creams and loose powders.

2. BEAUTY TISSUES

Beauty tissues, also known as beauty blotters, absorb sweat and excess oil without disturbing your makeup.

3. CAR MAKEUP BAGS

Car makeup bags are perfect when your schedule doesn’t go as planned, allowing you to do your makeup on the go while carrying only your essential products.

4. BEAUTY POCKET FOLDERS

Beauty pocket folders are palettes/compacts that let you touch up on the go or organize full makeup looks. Small, medium and large beauty folders are filled with eyeshadow, blush, lip color and more.

• An all-over eyeshadow brush is perfect for when you are applying makeup to your eyelids and is ideal for a oneand-done eye look.

• An eye-crease brush helps you add dimension to any eye look. The brush is angled to fit your eyelid contours and is perfect for eye looks with two or more eyeshadows.

• An eye-blending brush is another tool to ensure your colors are quickly and seamlessly blended to perfection. These are ideal for eye looks with two or more eyeshadows.

• A dual-end eyebrow/ eyeliner brush tames brows. It also can be used to apply

7.

HIGHLIGHTERS

- A powder brush is the perfect tool to apply loose mineral or translucent powder to control shine and keep fingers out of your face.

- A blush/highlighter brush enhances, highlights and sculpts cheekbones and is ideal for applying blush, highlighter or contour.

- A cream brush mimics fingertip application without any streaks. This brush can be used to apply concealer or lip color individually, but one brush should not be used for both.

6. BEAUTY CRAYONS

Beauty crayons are eyeliners and lip liners that accentuate your natural features with colors that make your eyes and complexion pop.

Highlighters are liquid eyeshadows used for one-and-done eye looks — great for when you have to run quick errands or dash to kids’ sporting events.

8. BEAUTY SCISSORS

Beauty scissors are tweezers that shape your perfect brow. Your eyebrows frame your face, so don’t neglect them!

9. BEAUTY GLUE

Beauty glue refers to primer and finishing spray, which give your makeup staying power in the Coast heat and humidity.

10. HAND SANITIZER

Hand sanitizer, last, but definitely not least, to keep hands free of bacteria and germs that can lead to breakouts or illness.

5. A FLEX PLAYER FOR HAIR

struggled with making my eyes pop when doing makeup. After I found Juvia’s “The Warrior” palette, I’ve never loved my eyes more! It’s very pigmented and blends beautifully with every color on the palette. Brown eyes are stunning, too!

3. LIPS THAT TRULY LAST

Talking for four hours straight on air, it is very hard to find a lip color that lasts through all shows without reapplying every commercial break. I had heard of Anastasia Beverly Hills and knew it was a nice brand, but I felt like I struck gold when I found their Liquid Lipstick at a local TJ Maxx! I have three different shades now, and if you aren’t a matte girl but want something that lasts, just add a clear gloss on top.

4. WAKE UP FRESH

I’ve always wanted the Dyson Air Wrap, but the price tag scared me. I saw all it could do for my hair and started researching. That’s when I found the “dupe” Shark FlexStyle Air Styling and Drying System. It’s still not cheap, but it’s half the price of the Dyson with almost identical attachments. With the Shark, I’m able to dry, straighten, round brush and air wrap. It makes styling my hair so much fun!

6. WORTH THE INVESTMENT

One of the best decisions I’ve made since becoming a news anchor was investing in Lash Extensions by Priscilla at The Avenue Salon! Not only do I now wake up confident, but it saves me so much time in the mornings! I ask Priscilla for a natural, yet noticeable, glam set and she kills it every time. Choosing to invest in my lashes is a decision I’ll continue to make time and time again.

As a Gulf Coast native, I’ve seen my hometown through many lenses. Growth has spread from city to city, and there’s always something going on.

From weddings to galas to fundraisers, our social calendars on the Coast are always full, and we want to show up looking our best. I’m happy to help and to share some ways to elevate your event look.

UPDOS

Whatever event you’re attending, a classy updo is always appropriate. While updos have remained popular, the most requested types have changed with the times. For instance, the high messy bun has reappeared from the ‘90s, but lately, this style has been enhanced. Adding intricate fishtail braids, dainty bows or even pearl embellishments can make the look more detailed and eye-catching. This style will always be a winner for weddings and evening parties to bring elegance and sultry vibes.

BLUSH

Challenge yourself with a new blush from brands like Juvia’s Place or Rare Beauty. Whether you’re wanting a soft pink, glowy orange or bold plum, blush can be for everyone and for every event. While blush can seem intimidating, the great thing about this product is that it’s buildable. You can wear as little or as much as you desire. Trying blush at home lets you see where your comfort level lies before you take your look public. Your rosy glow can be a personal triumph or a delight for the world to see.

Elevate your event look

From updos to smoky eyes, glam up and make a statement

THE FEATHERED BROW

The constant evolution of makeup trends means we often find ourselves at the crossroads of staying behind or riding the tide of change. In the past, eyebrows were sculpted and carved to perfection, but recently, that approach has been softened by the feathered brow trend. This look showcases the natural brow, but tamed. To achieve it, simply brush either a pomade or gel through the eyebrows and do minimal filling.

THE BROWN SMOKY EYE

As far as I’m concerned, a matte neutral will always be in style. The brown smoky eye is the alluring favorite right now and can be simple to achieve. Use a jumbo eye pencil in a matte brown shade on the lid to serve as the foundation for this look. Next, using a brush or the pad of your finger, you can soften the harsh edges of your initial application. On top of your diffused cream shadow, use a fluffy brush with a brown eye shadow. Use this all over the lid and soften the edges near the eye crease. Finish with either a false lash or mascara.

A personal mantra for myself lately has been, “Your anxiety is lying to you.” Go ahead and buy the eyeshadow. Put on the dress. Wherever you’re going, show up as your best, most confident self.

HOW I BUILT MY BUSINESS:

Old School Tutoring & Toys

Starting a business is a unique blend of excitement and uncertainty, and my entrepreneurial journey has been no exception. It all started in the spring of 2017 when I felt the need to break away from the standard classroom and design a space for my community that stimulates learning and creativity. I had a clear vision of wanting to continue helping students on the Gulf Coast, and I knew that parents needed help understanding the “new” math. So, the idea was to offer tutoring services while also providing toys that encourage hands-on learning. That June, I opened the doors to Old School Learning Depot.

STARTING SMALL

OSLD opened in a 700-square-foot FEMA cottage and could comfortably accommodate a handful of students at a time. It was important for me to start small. I wanted to make sure that I could cover all my expenses and have a little income left over to invest back into my business. I took on all the roles — the tutor, the bookkeeper, the buyer — and the teacher became the student. The learning curve of starting a business is steep, but the challenges ultimately are rewarding, as they lead to personal growth and success.

FIND YOUR NICHE

Reflecting on seven years of business ownership evokes an excitement that comes from turning my vision into reality. Old School has quadrupled in size and now has a fleet of “skoolies” sensory party buses that serve as learning centers, as well as stores. Renovating my first “skoolie” revamped the projection of my business. It has narrowed my niche and broadened my

customer base. Identifying this niche was crucial, as it has allowed me to cater to customers who want a one-stop-shop for students’ educational and recreational needs. For anyone starting out, ensure you have a clear niche that aligns with your passion and market demand.

CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESSES

Running my small business has allowed me to balance raising my twins with my professional life, providing the flexibility I need as a parent. It’s also evolved into a true family affair, with my husband now working alongside me, making the business a shared endeavor. Every day presents new opportunities and challenges, but the thrill of building something meaningful keeps the journey dynamic and fulfilling. Remember to start small, slowly reinvest in yourself, solidify your niche and celebrate your successes.

GLAMOUR, FUN AND GIVING BACK: HOW THE MILLION DOLLAR CLUB IS CHANGING LIVES

Mississippi Heroes believes in transforming lives — one wheelchair ramp at a time. One way to support this effort is to join the Million Dollar Club: a fun (and glamourous) way to give back.

WHAT IS THE MILLION DOLLAR CLUB?

Our mission is to bring mobility and independence to individuals who are trapped at home due to inaccessible living spaces. Many of these people face isolation and can’t fully participate in community life. The Million Dollar Club helps change that by funding crucial ramp construction projects. Membership dollars go directly toward the ramp program and building wheelchair ramps in the community.

A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE

Giving back should be more than just a transaction, and that’s why Mississippi Heroes has created a vibrant, engaging community for donors. The Million Dollar Club is meant to be about connection, celebration and fun!

• Each event is held at a unique, hidden-gem location along the Gulf Coast. These venues are often off the beaten path and offer an exclusive, memorable atmosphere. Guests get the VIP treatment with a red-carpet entrance and a complimentary glass of bubbly.

• Guests dress to impress in black or themed attire, adding an extra layer of excitement and glamour.

• Members receive a special invitation to club events. There’s a nominal door fee for guests, ensuring that everyone who attends is committed to the cause.

• Each event features a rotating selection of delicious food and drinks. From interactive murder mystery games to other entertaining activities, there’s always something to look forward to.

WHY THE MILLION DOLLAR CLUB MATTERS

Members of the Million Dollar Club are helping enhance lives and foster inclusivity. Every dollar goes toward breaking down barriers and allowing individuals to live more freely and independently.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

The donation to join is $10 monthly or $100 annually. To hit our goal of raising $1 million, we need 8,333 key community members to join and be the solution to this immediate need in the community. Together, we can build a world where everyone has the freedom to move and thrive!

To learn more or offer support to the Million Dollar Club, contact Katherine Sutton at (228) 234-4649 or MississippiHeroes@gmail. com.

BELOVED WLOX ANCHOR KAREN ABERNATHY RETIRES

After a 39-year broadcast journalism career, Karen Abernathy is signing off.

The fan-favorite WLOX anchor has recently retired, receiving a heartfelt sendoff from her colleagues and the community alike. The week leading up to her final broadcast was exhilarating, yet very emotional, for Abernathy, who was overwhelmed with gratitude for all the messages and well wishes she received.

“But I’m so excited about this next chapter in my life!” she says. “I wore shorts and a T-shirt all day Monday and my ‘Mama Mia’ overalls on Tuesday! This is the life!”

Own a small business?

YOU NEED THESE TYPES OF INSURANCE

There are millions of small businesses thriving in the U.S., ranging from construction to grocery stores to homebased enterprises.

Most entrepreneurs are risk takers and willing to invest their resources into their business. But, as we all know, no matter how diligent or responsible you are, things can go wrong. Some possible catastrophes include natural disasters, damage caused by another person such as crime, theft or vandalism, a personal injury lawsuit, a computer virus or cyberattack, fire loss, equipment breakdown, supply-chain problems, a death or illness and many others.

MOST BUSINESSES NEED TO

PURCHASE AT LEAST THE FOLLOWING FOUR TYPES OF INSURANCE:

PROPERTY

Protection may be needed for a building or storage location, and you definitely want to protect your merchandise and business equipment. You also may want to consider business

interruption income coverage that would help pay your expenses following damage to your business property.

LIABILITY

Anyone can sue you for any reason. A good liability policy will provide legal defense in the event of a mistake or accidental damage. A regular liability policy will not cover “your work,” so you also will want to consider adding professional liability coverage if you build, design or manufacture items as part of your business.

BUSINESS VEHICLE

Different coverage is available whether you own, rent, lease or drive personal vehicles for your business. Be sure you are covered correctly. A regular personal auto policy does not protect you when your car is used for business or for making deliveries. You will need to add coverage or possibly purchase a separate policy.

WORKERS COMPENSATION

As an employer, you are legally obligated to ensure a safe workplace and

provide medical care for staff who may be injured or become ill while working. You will be responsible for the employee if he or she is injured on the job for the rest of that person’s life, so workers comp insurance is a very valuable coverage, even when it is not mandated based on your business size.

HOW ABOUT A HOME-BASED BUSINESS?

For a home-based business, the right choice will depend on the nature of your business, its annual revenue, and the amount of coverage required. Protection options include:

• Endorsement to your homeowners policy

• In-home business insurance policy

• Businessowners policy

Meet with an insurance professional to determine the risks and proper coverages to protect you and your business, no matter how big or small.

Retirement is coming: Are you prepared?

Are you ready for your retirement years? We often push off retirement preparation because we assume we have time. Unfortunately, time becomes our enemy when we postpone financial planning.

For some, life is like a spontaneous vacation, never planning, always moving from one place, job or relationship to the next. We all know people who live in the moment and never seem to worry about consequences. While living in the moment can be exciting, it may not be as much fun when the bill comes due, when retirement is staring you in the face and you haven’t planned for it.

What about you? Are you a planner or a spontaneous, live-in-the-moment kind of person? Maybe you are a combination? Have you taken the time to really evaluate your life; where you have been and where you want to go? Do you like what you see, or do you avoid looking?

Wherever you are in life, make sure to ask yourself these questions early and often.

DO IT NOW, THANK YOURSELF LATER

Do you know what it would take to have $1 million in your retirement plan at age 65, assuming your dollars compound tax deferred and your annual average returns are 10 percent? At age 25, you would only need to start saving $157 per month to reach your goal. At age 40, the number increases to $747 per month, and if you delay beginning until the age of 50, the number jumps to $2,393 per month.

Should you experience major markets losses along the way, all these numbers change. What about taxes due on your retirement dollars and inflation? Have you considered them in your calculations?

Moreover, have you ever thought about what your 40-, 60-, 80- or 100-year-old self might have to say if you could talk with her? Would she thank you for taking take care of your mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing? Perhaps she would admonish you to take better care of yourself in one or all of these areas so she doesn’t have to

Do you know what it would take to have $1 million in your retirement plan at age 65, assuming your dollars compound tax deferred and your annual average returns are 10 percent?

suffer in what should be her golden years?

What would your older self say about her financial situation? Have you made proper provisions for her? Will she have money set aside for retirement? Will she have to worry about outliving her savings? Will she be able to afford to continue to live on her own? Will she have the money to pay someone to do things she no longer can do herself? Will she have any savings? Will her standard of living be diminished because her only source of income is Social Security?

What if she were to tell you that she would die prematurely, leaving her husband or family to care for her children and pay off her debts? What if she told you her premature death and the loss of her income caused her family to lose their home or standard of living? What would you do differently?

THE TIME IS NOW

Honestly, I’m sure there are things my older self would encourage me to change; especially regarding my physical health. I

cannot change my past, but I can learn from it and change my future.

What about you? What are those things you know you should change yet continue to avoid by telling yourself that you ‘will get to it’ eventually? My husband reminds me frequently that there are two pains in life: the pain of discipline, or the pain of regret; we get to choose.

Now is the time to choose to begin making changes. Today is the day to begin to live your best life as you plan for a wonderful future.

Authentic meals, served with love

Four female chefs create, cultivate and nourish at By the Fig and the Olive

Anew culinary gem brings flavors from around the world to the Coast, mixing rich, diverse culinary traditions and creating an enjoyable, yet healthy, dining experience.

Started by four friends, who happen to be self-taught female chefs, By the Fig and the Olive opened earlier this year in Ocean Springs to promote healthy eating and cultural appreciation through flavorful cuisine. Driven by a deep-rooted passion for cooking that evolved from years of preparing meals for friends and family, the diverse group of chefs from various cultural backgrounds shares a common goal: to create, cultivate and nourish through the language of food. Each chef behind this venture contributes to an array of global flavors. Chef Fariha Bhatty specializes in

Pakistani cuisine.

Chef Kinana Baroudi offers authentic Syrian dishes. Chef Sevim Edward shares her expertise in Turkish cuisine, though she’s now in Turkey tending to a family member. Chef Luckana Moritz specializes in Thai cuisine for private events.

“The vision behind By the Fig & the Olive was to create a welcoming space that inspires individuals to embrace a healthier lifestyle through delicious, nutritious and sustainably sourced meals,” said Chef Bhatty. “We envision a world where healthy eating is accessible, enjoyable and a cornerstone of vibrant living for all.”

"The philosophy behind the menu is to offer the community authentic dishes, all made with the freshest ingredients and prepared with love."

DELIGHT IN EVERY BITE

The philosophy behind the menu is to offer the community authentic dishes, all made with the freshest ingredients and prepared with love. A set menu is always available, enhanced by almost daily specials that are based on seasonal produce. Offerings also include gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options, with the hope that everyone can enjoy the cuisine.

I sampled several mouthwatering dishes during my visit, starting with the mezze platter that featured five different Mediterranean dips, including roasted and fried eggplant baba ghanoush, two types of hummuses and a yogurt sauce. It was the perfect way to set the stage for my culinary journey.

Next up was the shawarma wrap, featuring house-marinated chicken cooked on a spinning skewer, served with pickles and garlic sauce in a glutenfree wrap. Alongside this, I enjoyed two salads. The Greek salad was a medley of artichoke, pepperoncini, kalamata olives and feta cheese, drizzled with a housemade Greek dressing. The soba noodle salad provided a refreshing combination of fresh vegetables and buckwheat noodles, served with a peanut sauce

infused with tamarind and coconut milk.

Afterward, I enjoyed a gluten-free version of the tandoori club sandwich, a layered delight featuring grilled chicken in a tangy sauce, egg, cucumbers and tomatoes, accompanied by a zesty mango and pineapple salsa and apple slaw.

To complement these dishes, Common Ground, the adjacent neighborhood coffee shop and tearoom, provided beverages crafted by manager Haley Mitchell. I enjoyed an iced ube latte, made with ube essence and milk, and a tres leches cold brew, featuring coconut condensed milk, vanilla sweet cream foam and a sprinkle of cinnamon. These beautiful drinks were the ideal accompaniment to the meal.

For dessert, the stuffed dates were the perfect finish. Filled with feta cheese, parmesan, walnuts and thyme, then baked and drizzled with honey, they brought the dining experience to a sweet and savory end.

BREAKING BARRIERS BY BREAKING BREAD

“The phrase ‘Breaking barriers by breaking bread together’ encapsulates our powerful vision that emphasizes inclusivity and community,” Chef Bhatty shares. “It suggests a mission to bring people from diverse backgrounds together over healthy meals, fostering connection and understanding through shared dining experiences.

“This vision highlights the role of food in not only nourishing the body, but also in bridging social divides and creating a sense of unity. We are a tribe of women who come from different regions of the world with different cuisines and cultures, but we are connected to each other because of our shared passion for cooking wholesome food and serving it with love and gratitude.”

By the Fig and the Olive is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and closed Sundays and Mondays.
