FRIDA FEST’S BACK IN BAY ST. LOUIS

he’s considered one of the most important, influential artists of the 20th century, and each year, fans fill the streets of Bay St. Louis to pay her homage.

The legacy of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo lives on with Frida Fest, which returns to the Bay for the ninth year on July 13.

“Frida Fest was started in 2015 by Ann Madden and Sandy Maggio to celebrate the life and art of Frida Kahlo,” says Whitney LaFrance, operations and social media manager for Mockingbird Café, which is hosting this year’s festivities. “Mockingbird Cafe is honored to continue this celebration.”

Attendees can expect to be immersed in a unique, colorful world reminiscent of Kahlo’s masterpieces and indulge in Mexican-inspired food, drinks, live music and more. From art demos to a 5Kahlo Run, the day’s schedule is packed with fun Frida-themed activities.

“Each year, Frida Fest draws hundreds of people from all over,” LaFrance says, “and the numbers are only growing. Last year, we saw over 600 attendees!"

Even as the list of activities grows, the most beloved event remains the Frida look-alike contest, in which contestants will don flower crowns, colorful dresses and heavy brows to recreate Kahlo’s iconic look. Proceeds from the contest go to a deserving charity or organization, and this year, they will enable four artists of Latin descent to attend The Arts, Hancock County.

Even for those attendees who are not competing, LaFrance says, costumes are encouraged.

“Each year, the streets and shops of Downtown Bay St. Louis is packed with Frida-inspired looks,” she adds. “Women, men, children and pets all dress up in honor of Frida."

Frida Fest strives to embody the spirit of the celebrated artist, who was renowned for her vivid self-portraits and willingness to address sensitive personal and political themes. LaFrance likens Kahlo's artwork to a vibrant, brightly colored autobiography. Her paintings tell her life story, the good, the bad, and the ugly — including a tagic bus accident when she was 18 that left her bedridden for months. During that time, she hung a mirror above her bed, which enabled her to create some of her most famous self-portraits.

“Her capacity for self-reflection is extraordinary …,” LaFrance says. “Frida has become synonymous with individuality and the strength and resilience of women."

EMPOWERING WOMEN AT MGCCC

A Success Story of Mentorship and Education

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College has long been a beacon of opportunity and growth, fostering an environment where students and employees alike can thrive. Among its many successes are the remarkable women who have not only excelled in their roles but have also played vital roles in mentoring and inspiring others within the college community. This year, Gulf Coast Woman magazine recognized four of these extraordinary women—Sherri Carr Smith, Dr. Suzi Brown, Michelle Sekul, and Kate Sawyer—naming them among the 100 Successful Women to Know in 2024. Their stories, along with those of other dedicated staff members like Laura Glenn Rautenberg, highlight the transformative power of mentorship and education at MGCCC.

Sherri Carr Smith, as the director of Communications and Marketing in Institutional Relations, plays a crucial role in shaping the public image of MGCCC. Her innovative strategies and tireless work have significantly enhanced the college’s visibility and reputation. Smith’s efforts extend beyond her professional duties; she actively mentors young women in the communications field, encouraging them to harness their creativity and ambition.

Dr. Suzi Brown, vice president of Institutional Advancement, is another shining example of leadership at MGCCC. Her strategic vision and commitment to growth have been instrumental in securing resources and opportunities for the college. Dr. Brown’s advocacy for educational advancement and her mentorship of emerging leaders within the institution underscore her dedication to the college’s mission of excellence and accessibility.

Michelle Sekul, dean of Student Services at the Jackson County Campus, embodies the college’s commitment to student success. Her proactive approach to student support services ensures that every student receives the guidance and resources they need to achieve their educational goals. Sekul’s hands-on involvement in student affairs and her compassionate leadership style make her a beloved figure among students and staff alike.

Kate Sawyer, the director of Choirs at MGCCC’s Jackson County Campus, exemplifies the spirit of dedication and excellence. Her leadership and passion for music have not only elevated the choir’s performances but have also inspired countless students to pursue their musical aspirations. Sawyer’s commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment ensures that every student has the opportunity to shine, both on and off the stage.

The culture of mentorship at MGCCC is vividly illustrated by the journey of Laura Glenn Rautenberg. Initially working as a custodian, Laura was encouraged by her mentor, Dr. Blythe King, associate vice president of Human Resources, to pursue further education. Dr. King’s encouragement and the college’s policy of offering tuition-free classes to employees and their families provided Laura with the impetus to enroll in courses and complete her associate degree. Laura’s

hard work and determination paid off as she transitioned into a role as a Communications Specialist and now as a Finance Clerk, and she continues to advance her career at the Harrison County Campus.

These stories of success and mentorship highlight the unique environment at MGCCC, where opportunities for professional and personal growth are abundant. The college’s commitment to fostering a supportive and empowering community is evident in the achievements of these remarkable women. Through their leadership, mentorship, and dedication, they continue to inspire others to pursue their dreams and contribute to the vibrant educational landscape at MGCCC.

MGCCC is seeking accomplished professionals eager for advancement opportunities in a fulfilling career.

Into the eye of the storm

CAPT. ASHLEY KOSTUROCK TAKES US INSIDE LIFE AS HURRICANE HUNTER

When Hurricane Katrina devastated the Coast in 2005, Capt. Ashley Kosturock’s family was fortunate and sustained only minimal damage to their home.

But Kosturock’s dad, a Biloxi Police officer at the time, documented the disaster with a Kodak single-use camera, snapping scenes of the aftermath along Highway 90. Today, Kosturock carries those photos in her flight suit to every public event she attends as a member of the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron — better known as the U.S. Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunters.

“It was an extremely surreal experience — all that was left were oak trees and stairs to concrete foundations of nothing,” recalls Kosturock, a pilot for the unit. “Flying this mission and being a part of the team makes me feel as though I’m giving back to the community I grew up in and communities all over (that are) affected; it’s a fulfilling feeling.”

LEARNING TO FLY

A South Mississippi native, Kosturock graduated from Harrison Central High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in aerospace engineering from Mississippi State University. While at MSU, she worked part time as an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) pilot, helping to collect data for the Southeast River Forecast Center.

“I grew up not knowing what I wanted to do when I grow up, and happenstance allowed me the stepping stones for

an aviation career, so I took it and ran with it,” Kosturock says. “I owe much of this to Mark Stevens, retired Lt. Col. navigator from the Hurricane Hunters, as he taught me how to fly.”

She took one of her first flights at Shade Tree airport in Gulfport and now has a full-time job at Eglin Air Force Base as a test and evaluation engineer, in addition to her part-time role as a reservist with the Hurricane Hunters.

NO TWO STORMS ARE THE SAME

When Kosturock interacts with the public as a member of the 53rd, she often receives the same question: “Y’all fly over the storm and not through it, right?”

In fact, the unit’s C-130J pilots pass directly through a hurricane at an altitude of 10,000 feet or lower.

“This allows us to deploy dropsondes (data-collecting weather devices), which capture pertinent data all the way to the water’s surface,” Kosturock explains.

Each storm is unique, she adds, “which is ultimately why we are there — to investigate what is happening … .” A Low Power Color Radar onboard allows the crew to visualize what they can expect to fly through.

“The bumps are unpredictable, which can definitely create a pucker factor sometimes,” Kosturock says, “but we are disciplined with checklists and training, following guidance and expertise gained over the years and passed down from our predecessors.”

Ashley
“It may not be for everyone, but if you appreciate the data we provide, have an affinity for the beauty of weather and enjoy unexpected boosts of adrenaline, then (it’s) a great profession to train toward.”

A UNIQUE AND IMPORTANT MISSION

The 2024 hurricane season kicked off on June 1, but preparation for storm operations began well in advance. All forecasts are calling for an especially active season this year, thanks to near-record high temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean and the development of La Nina conditions, which provide less wind shear to break up developing storms.

Whatever the season brings, the 53rd is ready — manned by fulltimers and traditional reservists like Kosturock who augment as needed.

“As unpredictable as the weather can be, and hurricanes are for that matter, the full-time folks inevitably will take a brunt of the work during storm season, often leaving during holidays and being gone from their families for weeks at a time,” she says. “So, when you hear of a possible active season or see it in action, kudos to them for the ‘round-the-clock’ manpower they put into making storm flights happen. They’re busy and tired, but they’re executing an extremely unique and important mission.”

PUSHING HER LIMITS

Kosturock’s longest storm flight to date clocks in at just over 11 hours — a grueling day by any measure. Missions can be taxing — even more so if a storm creates an uncomfortably bumpy ride.

Nonetheless, Kosturock wouldn’t have it any other way. There is always room for personal growth, she says, and as a relative newbie to the unit, having flown her first season in 2022, she’s continually learning and pushing herself to be better.

“It may not be for everyone,” she admits, “but if you appreciate the data we provide, have an affinity for the beauty of weather and enjoy unexpected boosts of adrenaline, then (it’s) a great profession to train toward.”

Driven to make a difference

Ethridge shows resilience is her

When Boston native

Laura Sullivan

Ethridge says she was born “Boston strong” and became “New York resilient,” she can back up that claim. She was living in Manhattan when 9/11 happened. Her office was next to the World Trade Center.

“That day and the months that followed taught me the importance of resilience,” she recalls. “Many of us walked miles to safety, finding out in the ensuing days and weeks who had lost loved ones.”

Working for American Express at the time, she had to commute to New Jersey for months, without any of her work belongings like computers or files.

“We all rallied to help each other; we pieced together the files we needed; we rebuilt work strategies to support our clients, and we got back to work,” Ethridge says. “Every time I face adversity, I think of that time, and it gives me the courage and inspiration to work through it.”

VISUALIZING THE LONG GAME

She has since needed to rely on that strength and resilience. In 2012, her husband, Steve, suffered a stroke. It was a scary time. She worried about her husband and her sons, who were tweens. But she was awed by her husband’s tenacity and determination to return to work as fast as he could.

“We lived far from family, but they stepped up and rotated traveling to help us rebuild our lives,” Ethridge recalls. “I reminded myself of my 9/11 experience, taking it one day at

a time and visualizing the long game. He recovered quickly, and we recognized our long-term goal was to find a way to move closer to family in a place that felt more like home.”

That goal led them to Mississippi, her husband’s home state, and today, she and Steve are happily settled in Pass Christian (their sons are grown and living in other states). She works as chief marketing officer for Hancock Whitney Bank, where she is fulfilling her desire to have a positive impact. That desire is what drew her to financial services, because, as she explains: “In its purest form, it’s about helping people pursue their dreams.”

Ethridge says she is hardwired to be passionate about her work and about leading a life of service.

“My family set a high bar by always showing up to celebrate life’s big and small moments,” she says. “My parents and grandparents were very ‘values driven,’ and they wanted to ensure the next generation of our family had the support to succeed in education while also learning the importance of a strong work ethic. We were expected to do chores, play team sports, get summer jobs and help others when we could.”

LIVING HER VALUES

Ethridge’s grandparents, father and mother all believed in the importance of serving others and doing so with passion.

“For Grandpa Sullivan, that meant raising his hand to fight in World War II; my Grandpa Maines served as a Philadelphia police officer, and both my grandmothers were educators,

writing math books, teaching the blind and deaf and turning every life experience into a thoughtful teaching moment,” she says. “My father became a trial lawyer, a judge and then a law professor and had the courage to do the right thing.

"My mother was probably my greatest influence and often was called ‘a force.’ Her courage, coupled with passion, led her to co-found the first purposefully integrated preschool in the country. She also mentored at-risk teens and volunteered for countless committees, all while getting her master’s degree. Despite all of that, she never missed our field hockey or football games. She mastered the ‘to-do list’ and instilled in us to be helpers and hard workers.”

Ethridge is proud of the values instilled in her and of the path those values led her to take. She was in the first class of AmeriCorps in 1994, where she served at an organization that helped low-income women get the training to run their own business.

“It was just an amazing experience to move to a new city with real challenges, work in such diversity and live off a very small wage,” she recalls. I learned a lot about how important small and micro businesses can be to the fabric of our economy. I learned about working among a peer group that was incredibly diverse — it was exciting to be part of a movement that was on a national scale.

She began her own career path in the nonprofit and government sectors, where she worked in

“The most important part of success is filling your life with the love and laughter of family, friends and coworkers.”

communications. She learned leadership from John Gardner, a Stanford professor who talked a lot about the value of leaders understanding the inner workings of government, nonprofits and the business world.

“That got me on the path toward business school,” Ethridge says. “Once there, I had to think about leveraging my experience to open those next doors. The storytelling of communications linked nicely with marketing.”

She landed a job with American Express, a brand that attracted her because of its stellar reputation as a training ground for customercentric marketing and leadership development.

“From there, each opportunity kept opening doors” Ethridge says. “Looking at the journey to date, landing at Hancock Whitney feels like such a wonderful link to all those zigs and zags,”

Under her guidance, Hancock Whitney has won several advertising and public relations awards.

‘WOULDN’T TAKE NOTHING FOR MY JOURNEY NOW’

While anyone would describe Ethridge as successful, she says success for its own sake hasn’t been her driving force.

“Don’t just chase the salary, but pursue a career where you can thrive, and adjust your financial expectations accordingly,” she says. “The most important part of success is filling your life with the love and laughter of family, friends and coworkers.”

Boys & Girls Clubs’ CEO Keva Scott empowers youth, uplifts communities

Keva Scott knows all too well how it feels to be labeled a “bad kid.”

“If you grow up like that, you must believe in yourself because no one else does …,” Scott says. “I am still that same little girl who wanted a better answer, so she asked more questions. I saw a way around the obstacles. I was not afraid of you, even if you were bigger.”

Scott is still meeting challenges fearlessly as CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast, a position she has held since 2015. Reflecting on her 27-year career in youth development, she marvels at the way God has used a so-called “bad kid” to do so much good.

“I have a deep resilience and tenacity about life, and I think that all things are possible,” she says. “I love family. I love my kiddos! I love this work I do, and it fuels me.”

A CHAMPION FOR YOUTH

Scott maintains that she did not look for Boys & Girls Clubs; it found her. She wrote plays in college, and the daughter of the Clubs’ CEO starred in one of her shows, which led to an invite to come work for the organization.

Ever since, Scott has been on a mission to create opportunities and safe spaces where young people can learn, grow and succeed.

“The continual challenge and reward of making a positive difference in the lives of our youth is what has kept me motivated and committed to this field for nearly three decades,” she says.

Since Scott took the helm, the Clubs’ impact has expanded to over 6,700 youth annually. Not one to falter in a crisis, she faced a $650,000 deficit during her first year and has since grown the budget to $4.3 million. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she kept the doors open, transforming

facilities into virtual learning hubs for children of essential workers and expanding virtual programming.

“In my experience, the key to overcoming adversity lies in maintaining a clear vision of one’s life and goals, remaining adaptable to change and staying true to one’s core values,” she says. “These principles have not only helped me navigate difficulties, but also shaped my approach to leadership and life.”

Her tenure also has seen the addition of new club sites and innovative programs like S.T.E.A.M. MakerSpace Studios, music production studios, the ImPact mentoring program and a developmental sports league. A workforce development project is under way now that will serve young people ages 18-21, Scott notes proudly — “one of the few programs of its kind within the Boys & Girls Clubs movement.”

BEING PART OF THE SOLUTION

With a youth development career that has spanned several states, Scott has developed programs that have reached tens of thousands of at-risk youths and secured millions in funding.

As a National Training Associate for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, she has influenced many more beyond her immediate sphere. Her efforts have earned her numerous accolades, including Southeast CEO of the Year, Mississippi CEO of the Year, Sykes Leadership Award for the Southeast Region and the Forever Young Award.

“I love being part of the solution — creating environments that support and empower young people to reach their potential,” she says. “Moreover, my work is important because it helps build stronger communities. When young people are nurtured and supported, they become adults

“In my experience, the key to overcoming adversity lies in maintaining a clear vision of one’s life and goals, remaining adaptable to change and staying true to one’s core values.”

who contribute positively to society. They become leaders, innovators, and caretakers of the next generation.”

Scott not only sees potential in the burgeoning leaders at the Boys and Girls Clubs, but also in the Coast’s professionals and business owners. This is why she co-founded the Legacy Business League, a network designed to support minority entrepreneurship and provide resources for business development.

According to Scott, this initiative helps bridge gaps in access and fosters economic growth within the community. She also sits on the board of directors for Goodwill of South Mississippi and the Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce.

“Engaging in community service provides a platform to address social issues directly, helps build social cohesion and enriches our own lives through the act of helping others,” she says. “It’s a powerful way to initiate change and ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to succeed.”

To others who desire success, Scott offers the following advice: “Live your life intentionally.”

“You are not here by mistake, so live your life like you were meant to be here,” she says. “Do not waste your time on earth, but be intentional with every moment.”

Redefining B.O.S.S.

Lifelong educator Dr.

LaQuanta M. Nelson is breaking the mold

After two decades in the education field, Dr. LaQuanta M. Nelson finally has realized and accepted that she is a unicorn.

“I haven’t and never will fit in the mold that others have for me,” says the CEO of The BOSS Educator brand. “Instead of viewing this as a deficit, I know now that it’s my superpower.”

Nelson explains that BOSS is an acronym for bold, optimistic, spontaneous and substantial. A self-described Energizer Bunny, the Biloxi resident has learned over time that the proverbial glass is neither half full nor half empty, but actually refillable and she has the power to refill it.

of reading was passed on to me as a small child. She always had a book around, in her hand, and encouraged me to do the same.”

Her second-grade teacher showed her what it meant to teach with love, and then a high school teacher saw Nelson’s leadership potential and cheered her on. Combined, these influences drove her toward her destiny.

“As the product of a single mother growing up in poverty, I know the lifechanging transformation that education can bring,” Nelson says. “According to all statistics, you should still be only calling me ‘Quana,’ which was my nickname growing up, and not ‘Dr. Nelson.’”

“I desire to open doors, kick through ceilings and open windows for other amazing women across all fields to experience elevation and freedom.”

“I’m a masterpiece, a messy work of art,” she says. “And I’m on a mission to help others, through empowerment experiences, see that they are, too!

‘I AM A TEACHER!’

Time flies when you’re having fun, and Nelson scarcely can believe how fast her first 20 years in education have passed.

“My mother was and still is the greater teacher of my life,” Nelson says. “Her love

While education clearly was Nelson’s calling, she always envisioned it differently. To the Crystal Springs, Mississippi, native, learning is life, and it should be fun, impactful, empowering and inspiring. She has applied this philosophy to her roles as mentor, motivational speaker, consultant, teacher, assistant principal, principal, district-level New Teacher Academy coordinator and now SHE-E-O of her own brand.

Nelson’s job titles may have changed, but her answer to the question “What do you do for a living?” never has. She proudly and emphatically replies, “I am a teacher!”

“The years have progressed, but I am still a teacher; the only thing that has changed are my students,” she says.

‘GIRL POWER SHOULD BE MY MIDDLE NAME’

Throughout her career, Nelson has witnessed and experienced the many biases that women must endure to be viewed as equal. These struggles have fueled her with passion to champion other women and girls and help them become the best versions of themselves.

One way she does so is by hosting an annual girl’s empowerment conference called Camp Confidence, which is free to all participants.

“I believe that the earlier we can help our youth understand their amazing power and unlimited potential, the more we set the world up to be a brighter, better place for all,” Nelson says.

SUCCESS EQUALS FREEDOM

All Nelson’s actions and decisions are rooted in her belief that everyone is capable of greatness. The many accolades she has received, ranging from Administrator of the Year and Community Changemaker of the Year to Maverick of the Year and, most recently, one of the Top 40 Black Leaders, show how determined she is to defy expectations.

“I desire to open doors, kick through ceilings and open windows for other amazing women across all fields to experience elevation and freedom,” she says.

Freedom is how Nelson defines success. Everyone is on different paths, she says, traveling at different speeds, and people operate at their highest level when they realize there’s more than one way to reach a destination.

“I’ll never forget my first few years as an administrator, feeling like I needed to dress a certain way, talk and walk a certain way, eat a certain lunch,” she recalls with a laugh. “Let’s be honest, there are norms and expectations. And while we need structure to thrive, self-imposed restrictions … minimize collaboration and communication, which decreases overall impact.”

Being brave and bold, yet humble, and showing up personally and professionally as your most authentic self, she adds “That’s SUCCESS!”

BLESSED ARE THE FLEXIBLE

Despite her many achievements, Nelson is most proud of being mom to Tyler Jacob, whom she describes as “an 11-year-old going on 88.” As the parent of busy young boy, her time is not as free as it once was, but she finds that if we are willing, there are always ways to pour into the lives of others.

It was years before Nelson could talk about her painful divorce, due to the associated shame and stigma. Calling comparison a “thief of joy,” she says her life truly started once she’d escaped this mindset.

“I am not my failures; you are not your failures,” she says. “We must be brave enough to pull out the mirror, be honest with ourselves, learn from the experiences and forge ahead better, not bitter.”

“Celebrating 45 years of a Coast Dance Tradition.”

Kelli’s Steps school of dance was born from humble beginnings in my garage, I set my path toward a dream that journeyed through the Vieux Marche, where the famous Kelli Girl pose was created.

My journey toward success continued when I opened my dancing doors at my Howard Avenue studio. Unfortunately, Hurricane Katrina changed my path. All the while, I was learning through life experiences that there is no place like home. I realized that we all were in this together, and regrouped at Edgewater Mall.

Now we are at our forever home on Cedar Lake Road, where I cherish the dance family I have built through it all. My studio offers everything under one roof - recreational classes to pre-professional training in jazz, tap, musical theatre, hip hop, ballet, pointe, contemporary, tumbling and cheer.

Thank you for celebrating 45 years of teaching the art of dance with me.

The tradition continues!

In the past 18 years it’s been a pleasure to watch our patients heal themselves. Sharing my love of epigenetics, neuroplasticity, gut and brain axis, high vibrational frequencies, EFT, psychoneuroimmunology, yoga, meditation and JFB Myofascial release have transformed the lives of our patients in a way I didn’t know was possible.

The first step is always to change the way you think about yourself. Speak kind words when you are exhausted, sleep deprived, stressed, and in pain. The body will physically hurt more when it lacks kindness, self care and self love.

The second step is to begin new ways of feeling. Notice the repetition of your emotions. Are they the same as yesterdays and the day before? Feeling the same thoughts digs us deeper into a hole that’s difficult to get out of. BUT, What if you took a deep breath and remembered when you felt the emotion of joy? Repeat that feeling of joy.

The third step is to be open to your own ability to heal and not to believe that a diagnosis is forever. When a medical practitioner tells you that you have this, this, and this, ask

“There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”
- Albert Einstein

JACKIE CASTRO-COOPER Holistic Alternative Physical Therapist

questions. What’s the root cause of this diagnosis? What foods can I eat or herbs can I take to help my body heal? When we marry our diagnosis we close the door to our 50 trillion cells ability to alter our DNA and create new chemicals and energy in our bodies that can heal us. Trust your inner wisdom. Look for the health care providers that are not only recommending medications but are giving you other healing options.

What if the doctor of the future is yourself?

LAURA LACOSTE

Executive Director

The Oustalet Foundation

“None of us, including me, ever do great things. But we can all do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonderful.”

I am honored to be selected for the 2024 Success Showcase of Women to Know. I am also humbled because I am aware of the fact that success is something that is not possible without others. For ambitious goals, you must seek out others who believe in your cause and will passionately fight alongside you.

I have been fortunate to have the support of many successful women. Two of these individuals are responsible for a significant part of that success. Those two women are Haley Martin, owner of The Capitol Group, and Laura Lacoste, Executive Director of the Butch Oustalet Foundation and realator for Rain Residential. These women successfully helped me accomplish the ambitious goal of advocating for legislation that allows more professionals to serve students with dyslexia. Senate Bill 2681, passed into law on April 20th, 2024, will profoundly affect dyslexia educational services for decades. This bill expands accessibility to dyslexia therapy training programs for educators, provides for reciprocal licensure of dyslexia therapists moving to Mississippi, and allows Speech and Language Pathologists who are also Certified Academic Language Therapists to receive licensing in Dyslexia Therapy from the Mississippi Department of Education. The bill passed unopposed in both chambers of the legislature after three years of being presented in various forms of legislation. It was incredible work that took Haley’s experience with the legislative

process, Laura’s long journey of parenting a dyslexic child, and my professional knowledge of dyslexia remediation with students ranging from early elementary to late diagnosis to accomplish this task.

I am grateful for the many professionals the three of us networked and built relationships with across the state to see this law come to life.

Working with these women has paved the way for my success, and I feel blessed to have them in my life.

As a little girl, I can remember longing to leave Mississippi and dreaming of a bigger life than I thought I could have here. As I matured and learned to value the essential things of life, I deeply yearned to return to Mississippi to raise my family with the core values of faith, family, and community commitment. I have learned that success is only possible through building relationships with like-minded souls willing to work with you to leave the world a better place. Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, commented, “Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure that impact lasts in our absence.” I don’t love all things Facebook, but I love this quote from its COO. With these successful women at my side and with great love, we are doing something wonderful to lead the way to a brighter future for students with dyslexia.

Community Care Network’s journey begins with Diane Easley, a visionary who felt God’s calling to make a tangible difference in the lives of others. After nearly a decade directing the Home of Grace women’s program, followed by years of prison ministry, Diane recognized a “revolving door pattern”. Women had been given the tools they needed to succeed, but once they left the ‘bubble’ of treatment or incarceration, something was always waiting for them on the outside. She knew there needed to be a safe place where these women could implement and walk out the skills they had learned so they could indeed break the cycles of addiction, abuse, and trauma. In 2003, With a great deal of prayer, work, dedication, and community support - Sue’s Home transitional home was born.

Over twenty years later, what started as a small faithbased ministry where women could have a safe place

“That’s what I want our legacy to beindividuals who see they have potential, are active in their community, and who make a difference in the lives of others.”

to find healing, hope, and God’s purpose, has become one of the leading non-profits in the Mississippi Gulf Coast region. With three programs serving homeless families, children, and youth aging out of foster care, CCN ensures the most vulnerable among us have housing, life skills training, and the support needed to move to selfsufficiency and success.

Diane has always believed in the importance of collaboration and teamwork. Because of this, she has developed an incredible staff and a robust network of volunteers who pour into clients with impacts that reach into future generations.

Because Diane Easley faithfully answered His call so many years ago, the revolving door pattern has changed, countless lives have been impacted, and generational cycles are being broken.

“There Is Always Something to be Grateful For.”

I am always grateful that my daddy piled us into the back of a wood paneled station wagon and drove us around the United States. The passion to travel has never left me.

My career as a travel advisor began 20 years ago. I was taught best practices, confidence and an ethical foundation that I adhere to today.

My expertise and support are always available for my clients. I hold many certifications including Viking River Cruise Specialist. I book groups and individual travel.

I’m often asked where has been my favorite place to travel? So far, there is a small village in the South of France, called Eze, and Istanbul. I hope to get back to both again someday. And by the way, I know where to get the absolute best pasta in Italy. Contact me and I’ll share my secret. Where in the world do you want to go?

Picking the perfect place to say, ‘I do’

Your guide to finding the ideal wedding venue

Your wedding venue sets the stage for one of the most significant days of your life, making it a crucial decision in your wedding-planning process. From the ambiance to the logistics, there are many factors to consider when picking the place you’ll say, “I do.” Here are some tips to help guide your venue search: BY

DEFINE YOUR VISION

Before you start scouting venues, take some time to envision your dream wedding. Consider the style, atmosphere and size of the event you desire. Are you picturing a rustic barn wedding, an elegant ballroom affair or an intimate garden ceremony? Defining your vision will narrow down your options and guide your search.

SET YOUR BUDGET

Determine how much you’re willing to allocate for the venue. Remember to consider not only the rental fee, but also any additional costs like catering, decor and rentals. Be realistic about what you can afford and prioritize your must-haves.

CONSIDER LOGISTICS

Think about the practical aspects of the venue, such as location, capacity and accessibility. Choose a location that is convenient for you and your guests, especially if you have out-of-town attendees. Ensure that the venue can comfortably accommodate your guest list and any special requirements, such as wheelchair accessibility.

EXPLORE DIFFERENT STYLES

Consider a variety of venue types to find one that reflects you as a couple. From historic landmarks and hotels to vineyards and beach resorts, there are endless options to suit every taste and theme. Visit multiple venues to get a feel for their unique atmosphere and amenities.

EVALUATE AMENITIES AND SERVICES

Consider what amenities and services the venue offers. Does it provide in-house catering, or can you bring in your own vendors? Is there ample parking for your guests? Are there on-site accommodations for you and your bridal party? Assessing these factors will help streamline your decisionmaking process.

ASSESS THE FLEXIBILITY

Flexibility is key when it comes to wedding planning. Choose a venue that gives you the freedom to customize your wedding according to your preferences. Some venues may have strict regulations regarding decor, music and end

times, so be sure to clarify any restrictions beforehand.

READ REVIEWS AND GET RECOMMENDATIONS

Do your research by reading online reviews and seeking recommendations from friends, family, and wedding professionals. Hearing about others’ experiences with a particular venue can provide valuable insights and help you make an informed decision.

VISUALIZE YOUR DAY

Envision how your wedding day will transpire at each potential venue, considering the ceremony setup, cocktailhour location and reception layout. Imagining how the experience will unfold in each space will give you a better sense of its flow and functionality.

ASK QUESTIONS

Don’t hesitate to ask the venue coordinator or manager any questions you may have. Inquire about availability, pricing, policies and any

special accommodations they can offer. Clear communication is essential to ensuring that your expectations are met.

TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS

Finally, go with your gut when making your decision. Choose the venue that not only meets your practical needs, but also feels right for you as a couple. When you step into the perfect spot, you’ll know it’s the one.

Choosing a venue is an exciting part of the wedding planning process. By considering these factors and following your heart, you’ll find the ideal setting to celebrate your love and create cherished memories that will last a lifetime.

Sandi Anderson THRIVING after breast cancer

MY HEALTH CHALLENGE

In June of 2020, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was an unexpected phone call from my doctor (that delivered the news). I was terrified and shocked. I surrendered to God’s plan, and my mindset dramatically improved.

WHAT I DID

In 11 months, I had a double mastectomy, four rounds of chemotherapy and a hysterectomy. As of today, I am doing great, and my doctors are pleased.

THE HARDEST PART

The hardest part was accepting that I had cancer because I always had considered myself very healthy. The most rewarding part has been reaching out to other women with breast cancer and educating women about the importance of being proactive about their health. I am blessed to be able to share my story with so many women at the studio.

WHAT MY LIFE IS LIKE NOW

Life is great! I am at the studio teaching most days. I look back at my life and see how God always had me in his hedge of protection. I am much stronger mentally. 2020 was the most difficult year for me thus far, both personally and professionally. I had to close my studio for four months due to my health and COVID restrictions on businesses. I am most proud of the fact that I was able to reopen the studio in less than three weeks after completing chemotherapy, rebuild the studio community, grow my teaching staff and expand the studio to include reformer Pilates after being closed.

MY ADVICE TO OTHERS

Give your worries to God. Trust in his plan; trust in his timing — even if you don’t understand it.

Sandi lives in Gulfport and is the owner of The Yoga Barre Pilates Studio.

Raising awareness for minority mental health: Why it matters

July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to highlighting the unique mental health challenges faced by minority communities and the need for increased awareness and support. As we navigate an era of growing mental health concerns, it’s crucial to recognize that minority groups often experience these challenges in distinct ways, influenced by cultural, social and economic factors.

UNDERSTANDING THE UNIQUE CHALLENGES

Minority communities face a myriad of obstacles that can exacerbate mental health issues. These include systemic racism, socioeconomic disparities and cultural stigma surrounding mental health. For many, accessing quality mental health care remains a significant hurdle due to financial barriers and a lack of culturally competent providers.

Imagine dealing with anxiety or depression but feeling unable to seek help because the available resources don’t understand your cultural background or because you fear discrimination. This is a reality for many individuals in minority communities. The first step toward addressing these issues is acknowledging their existence and understanding their roots.

THE IMPACT OF STIGMA

One of the most significant barriers to mental health care in minority communities is stigma. Cultural beliefs and societal norms often discourage open discussions about mental health, leading to feelings of shame and isolation. For instance, in some cultures, seeking help for mental health issues is seen as a sign of weakness or failure, further deterring individuals from accessing necessary care.

Breaking down these stigmas requires a concerted effort from both within and outside these communities. Mental health professionals must strive to build trust and rapport with minority patients by demonstrating cultural sensitivity and understanding. Community leaders and influencers also can play a pivotal role by openly discussing mental health and advocating for acceptance and support.

THE ROLE OF CULTURAL COMPETENCE

Cultural competence in mental health care is not just beneficial; it’s essential. Providers who understand and respect cultural differences can offer more effective and empathetic care. This means being aware of cultural beliefs, practices and values that influence how individuals perceive and experience mental health.

For example, a culturally competent therapist working with a Hispanic patient might recognize the importance of family dynamics and incorporate this understanding into their treatment approach. Similarly, understanding the historical trauma experienced by African American communities can help providers address the deeprooted issues that affect mental health.

STEPS TOWARD IMPROVEMENT

To make meaningful strides in improving mental health care for minority communities, we need a multifaceted approach:

• Education and training: Mental health professionals should receive ongoing training in cultural competence to better serve diverse populations.

• Community engagement: Building partnerships with community organizations can help disseminate information and resources more effectively.

• Policy advocacy: Supporting policies that increase funding for mental health services and ensure equitable access to care is crucial.

• Breaking the silence: Encouraging open conversations about mental health in minority communities can help reduce stigma and promote acceptance.

As we observe Minority Mental Health Awareness

Month, let’s commit to raising awareness and taking action to support the mental wellbeing of minority communities. By understanding the unique challenges they face and working toward culturally competent and accessible care, we can make a difference in the lives of many. It’s time to prioritize mental health for all, recognizing that our diverse backgrounds and experiences enrich our collective journey toward wellness.

FEMALE HEALTHCARE LEADERS SHARE INSIGHTS ON PERSONAL, PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS

FROM MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM

Achieving success both personally and professionally is a complex journey. Two respected leaders at Memorial Health System, Anne Musgrove and Kristian Spear, exemplify this balance in an ever-demanding field.

Anne, the director of advanced practice providers, shares her gifts and talents in her profession while juggling limited –but important – time with loved ones. Kristian, clinical director of Memorial’s Physician Clinics, prioritizes opportunities that bring her joy, especially with family and friends.

STRESS MANAGEMENT IS KEY

Chronic stress in women can lead to countless issues. Both Anne and Kristian understand the importance of managing mindset and setting boundaries.

“I truly seek to find purpose in the work that I do,” Anne says, “whether that is direct patient care or my administrative role.”

Kristian adds, “To prevent burnout, I lean on the core values I have. I pray … a lot, and I try hard to set boundaries to protect my personal time.”

HARNESSING THEIR SUPERPOWERS

When times are really challenging and the demands seem endless, Anne and Kristian lean on their superpowers.

“My superpower is an extremely strong sense of intuition,” Kristian says. “It is that gut feeling that goes beyond the science or the logic that has helped guide me in patient care, life as a mother and in my career.”

Anne says her superpower is her “ability to understand people of all walks of life, something I inherited from my grandfather.

“I have always been able to relate to the humanity of

others,” she adds, “regardless of their lot in life, and see the commonalities in all people.”

‘RIGHT WHERE YOU NEED TO BE’

For Anne, success means having a peaceful life, and for Kristian, it means finding personal and professional fulfillment.

“My best personal accomplishment is raising two amazing humans: Emily, who is a civil engineer in New York City, and Trevor, who is a conservation biology major at USM,” she says. “They amaze me every day!”

Kristian takes immense pride in being the mother to Ayden, 16, Peyton, 14, and Emersyn, 8.

“It is the role I love the most, and I love watching them grow into the amazing people they are becoming,” she says. “The impact I have on their lives, their growth and their development is something I have never taken lightly.”

As a final piece of advice, Kristian shares that if your goal is to have a successful career and a family, it is possible, although not always easy, if you seek integration rather than a perfect balance.

“The key is to remain flexible and resilient, lean on your loved ones, and celebrate the small wins,” she says.

Anne adds, “Society places so much pressure on women to be a certain way; we are often described as ‘too much’ of something or ‘not enough’ of something else. The simple truth is, we just ‘are.’

“My hope for all women is that we stop feeling the need to apologize for having a career, or for not having one, for having children, or for not having children, for climbing the corporate ladder, or for being a homemaker. Wherever you are in life, and whatever you are doing, you are right where you need to be.”

When my dad suffered a stroke, it was my turn to help him with important decisions, like making the right choice in rehabilitation. I asked the medical professionals that treated him who they trusted for the best care and outcomes. They referred us to a place that created a rehabilitation program

specifically designed for his needs using advanced technology and innovative treatments. And he was cared for by a highly trained, experienced staff that showed professionalism and compassion throughout his recovery. Now I know why they are the trusted choice of medical professionals.

Why you should never miss a mammogram

ANNUAL SCREENINGS ARE YOUR BEST

DEFENSE AGAINST BREAST CANCER

The American Cancer Society reports a five-year survival rate of 99% when breast cancer is caught early. This is why annual mammogram screenings are your best defense, along with regular self-checks.

Except for skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer affecting women in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 300,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year, which accounts for about 30% of all new female cancers.

While these figures may sound alarming, breast cancer is treatable in many cases. It is most treatable when detected early through mammogram screenings.

Breast cancer can progress silently for years without noticeable changes, such as lumps in your breasts. Many breast cancers don’t come with symptoms, and they are only detected through screening. Therefore, we encourage yearly mammograms for most women age 40 and over, regardless of family history.

WHAT IS A MAMMOGRAM?

A mammogram is a special type of X-ray that can detect breast cancer. The most advanced form of breast cancer screening is a 3D mammogram. This technology captures multiple images that are merged into a 3D view of the breast. This allows a radiologist to carefully look through different layers of the image, making it easier to spot any areas of concern.

Women at high risk for breast cancer may need to start screening before age 40, or they may need screenings with a breast MRI to provide more details about their breast tissue. Your gynecologist or primary care doctor can help you assess when to start screening.

IS BREAST CANCER FATAL?

The American Cancer Society reports a five-year survival rate of 99% when breast cancer is caught early. This is why annual mammogram screenings are your best defense, along with regular self-checks.

If you do find a lump, it’s important to know that it does not always mean cancer. We urge you to see your doctor if you find any unusual mass or bump that persists beyond a few days.

Got skin cancer questions?

Dr.

Dawn Hansen talks skin

cancer types, prevention and treatment HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Dr. Dawn Hansen of Dermatology Specialists of Mississippi in Biloxi is a board-certified internal medicine specialist with over 20 years of dermatology experience. Dr. Hansen, along with board-certified dermatologist Dr. Peter Barnes, diagnoses and treats a variety of skin concerns, including acne, eczema and psoriasis. Dr. Hansen also specializes in non-invasive skin rejuvenation and is a skilled cosmetic injector.

Dr Hansen has developed a passion for educating others on the importance of annual screenings to detect skin cancer early and how to protect our skin from the sun’s damaging rays. Here, she answers your most pressing skin cancer questions:

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON TYPES OF SKIN CANCER THAT YOU SEE?

Skin cancers can be divided into two types: non-melanoma (including basal and squamous cell carcinomas) and melanoma. Melanoma is the leastcommon type that I see; however, it also is the most aggressive. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common, typically appearing as abnormal growths that resemble a waxy bump, sore or scar. Squamous cell carcinoma often looks like scabs, with a crusty patch growing on top of inflamed, red skin. About 90% of these non-melanoma skin cancers are associated with sun exposure.

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer, and it can be fatal if left untreated. It can occur anywhere on the body as the skin cells that produce pigment mutate and grow rapidly, forming a tumor that resembles a mole or develops from a mole.

WHAT TREATMENT OPTIONS DOES YOUR PRACTICE OFFER?

At Dermatology Specialists of Mississippi, we offer multiple advanced, proven skin cancer treatment options, including Mohs micrographic surgery and image-guided superficial radiation therapy (IG-SRT).

Mohs surgery provides three proven benefits: high cure rates, minimal scarring and quick recovery. Board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon Dr. Lisa Chastant performs the procedure, removing only the cancerous area and preserving as much healthy skin as possible. This treatment improves the cosmetic outcome and is commonly used for skin cancers on highly visible areas like the face, neck, ears and hands.

IG-SRT is the non-surgical gold standard treatment for non-melanoma skin cancer. This surgery-free treatment has a 99% cure rate for basal and squamous cell skin cancers. The ultrasound imaging technology allows our radiation therapist, Brandi Hackler, to see the cancer on the screen and review the progress during each session as the cancer shrinks until there are no visible signs remaining.

WHAT ARE YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SKIN CANCER PREVENTION?

I recommend that all my patients come in for a full skin exam at least once per year or more frequently if they have a family or personal history of skin cancer. In between visits, they also should perform skin cancer self-exams, checking for any spots that are irregular, evolving or suspicious.

I also recommend that people wear sunscreen daily with an SPF of 30 or higher, limit sun exposure (especially from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. when the sun’s rays are the strongest), avoid tanning beds and wear protective clothing (including sunglasses and hats) while out in the sun.

Unlock your fitness potential:

THE POWER OF A WEEKLY WORKOUT SCHEDULE

Ever wonder how some people manage to squeeze in their weekly workout routine and still have time for other life tasks? Let’s talk about a game-changing secret that’s easy to implement and oh-sorewarding: creating and sticking to a weekly workout schedule. Trust us, it’s easier and more fun than you might think!

WHY PLAN YOUR WORKOUTS?

First things first, why should you even bother with a schedule? Well, having a workout plan helps you stay organized, keeps you motivated and ensures you’re getting a well-rounded mix of exercises. Plus, it turns your fitness routine into something you look forward to rather than a chore you squeeze in whenever you find time. Consistency is key, and a schedule helps you build that rhythm.

THE JOY OF PLANNING

Imagine sitting down with a colorful planner or a fun fitness app and mapping out your workouts for the week. Monday could be your yoga day, where you stretch out and find your inner calm. Wednesday? Let’s turn up the heat with a dance class that makes you forget you’re even exercising because you’re having so much fun. How about a family bike ride on Saturday, combining quality time with a great workout?

STAY MOTIVATED

Knowing what’s coming up keeps you excited and motivated. It’s like having a series of mini-goals to look forward to each week. Plus, crossing off each workout feels incredibly satisfying! You’ll be surprised at how quickly you start to see and feel the results of your consistent efforts.

Barry A. Ripps, a native of Mobile, returned to the Gulf Coast in 1994, bringing the excellence of his education: Vanderbilt University, University of Alabama School of Medicine at Birmingham and residency/fellowship at the University of Tennessee – Memphis. Dr. Ripps retains board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology and, most importantly, in the specialty of Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility, aka “REI”.

This extensive training included grant funding in pioneering research in endometriosis and male infertility, and expertise in managing polycystic ovary syndrome and methods of assisted reproduction. For 30 years, New Leaders In Fertility & Endocrinology, NewLIFE Fertility,

has delivered innovation, advancing fertility care on the Gulf Coasts of Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Not only providing patients with stellar and consistent clinical successes, but offering unparalleled cost-effectiveness, giving more couples an opportunity to be parents.

All physicians at NewLIFE Fertility are fellowship-trained and boardcertified. And NewLIFE Fertility has the important distinction of being the Gulf Coast’s only local-service practice with a board-certified Medical Director.

When assistance is needed, there are benefits to exploring all the fertility care options. NewLIFE Fertility is easily recognized as the area’s leader.

BALANCE IS KEY

A well-planned schedule ensures you’re hitting all the important fitness areas: cardio, strength, flexibility and rest. By mixing things up, you prevent boredom and keep your body guessing, which is great for progress. It also makes it easier to include rest days, which are just as important for recovery and preventing burnout.

FLEXIBILITY IS YOUR FRIEND

Life happens, and sometimes you’ll need to adjust your plan. That’s totally OK! The beauty of having a schedule is that it gives you a framework to work with, but it’s not set in stone. If you miss a day or need to switch things around, no worries. Just pick up where you left off and keep going.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS

1. Make it fun: Choose activities you enjoy. The more fun it is, the more likely you are to stick with it.

2. Set realistic goals: Start with a manageable plan and gradually increase the intensity and duration as you progress.

3. Stay accountable: Share your schedule with a friend or join a fitness group. Encouragement and accountability go a long way.

4. Reward yourself: Celebrate your achievements, big or small. Treat yourself to a new workout outfit or a relaxing bubble bath.

So, what are you waiting for? Grab your planner, get creative with your workouts, and let’s make fitness an exciting and integral part of your weekly routine. You’ve got this!

Stay active, stay happy, and keep shining!

New children’s book features fun animal adventures, celebrates healthy eating

Natalie Guess’s “The Biggest, the Oldest, the Strongest... All Eat Plants” encourages kids to eat more fruits and veggies

Inspired by her own plant-based journey, Natalie Guess has launched a new children’s book that’s already topping the Amazon Hot New Releases chart.

Guess, president at NG Consulting LLC, says this project is one she’s wanted to undertake for years. Her book, titled, “The Biggest, the Oldest, the Strongest... All Eat Plants” invites readers to follow Kantu the elephant, Bali the gorilla and Tamu the tortoise as they embark on daily adventures and discover the lush greenery and tasty plants that make them big and strong.

“Not every diet is for everyone, but I truly believe we could all stand to incorporate more fruits and veggies in our daily diet,” Guess tells her social media followers. “My hope with this children’s book is to encourage our youth to do just that, so that they too can grow big and strong and live long, happy, healthy lives just like Kantu, Bali and Tamu!”

Featuring beautiful illustrations by Joshua Wichterich, the book is available on Amazon.com and also will also be available at local coffee shops and select stores on the Coast — including Mockingbird Cafe, Lynn Meadows Discovery Center and others. Besides the fun story, parents can find some kid-friendly recipes in the back of the book.

Vivid hair colors are here to stay

Vivid hair has been a hot commodity for a while, and it’s not going out of style any time soon. Now that summer’s here, we look forward to seeing everything from pretty pastels to bright, bold neons.

I love that vivid shades are still having their moment! It allows people to express themselves and showcase their individuality. Why live in a world of just blondes and brunettes when you can live in a world of endless color possibilities?

If you’re considering stepping outside of the standard color palette, here’s what you need to know:

MAINTENANCE

Like any other hair color, vivid hair requires special care to maintain its vibrancy. Pick up a professional shampoo and conditioner that are either sulfate free or have minimal sulfates. Sulfates make our shampoos lather, but they also pull out your beautiful color. I always recommend keeping the water as cool as possible while shampooing, which will keep the cuticle from lifting too much and allowing color to slip out. Vivid specialists recommend adding a dry shampoo to your routine as well. This will help to extend the time between washes and combat oiliness. Regular visits to the salon for touchups are normal and typically are recommended every four to seven weeks.

Color bomb masks are a great alternative between visits; you can ask your professional about them. They are customized specifically to keep your color vibrant at home until your next session.

LONGEVITY AND INTEGRITY

“Invest in your hair; it is the crown you never take off”Tyler Buckle

As a professional, it’s most important to keep your clients’ hair strong and healthy. Make sure to find a professional who is skilled in color correction and pre-lightening. If the person you’re trusting with your hair doesn’t have the proper training, things can go south during a color appointment. Professional treatments and bond builders are must-haves in any transformative color, as they help maintain the hair’s health and integrity.

Vivid hair is a great way to personalize your look. From adding pops of color with extensions, pairing an edgy cut with your new neon shade or creating endless waves of shimmering hues, you can transform your look into a stunning spectrum of colors!

Pucker up for National Lipstick Day!

Perfect your pout with these essential lip tips

We all know Independence Day is in July, but there is another holiday worth celebrating this month: National Lipstick Day on July 29. It is a day we celebrate the versatility and power of lipstick. This is your chance to step out and do something different. Yep, I’m calling you out, girlfriend. What are you afraid of?

When I first started wearing lipstick, my go-to hue was berry. Berry lip colors are a safe color that looks good on any skin tone — not bold, not neutral, just right in the middle of most women’s comfort zone. I don’t think there is a universal wrong or right lip color. I encourage you to try before you buy and wear whatever makes you feel confident.

Coco Chanel once said, “If you are sad, add more lipstick and attack.” The best lip color is the one that looks good on you, so dare to be the best version of yourself.

HERE ARE SOME HELPFUL

LIP-RELATED POINTERS: LIPLINER

What is the right color? There are two options.

• Flesh tone is an economical choice because you can wear a flesh-toned liner with any lip color. Therefore, you only will need one liner for your rainbow of lipsticks.

• However, there is another school of thought. Some of us prefer to have our lipliner match our lip color. This approach is more expensive for those of us who like variety. There are four color families of lip color: reds, pink/mauves, plum/berries and neutral/earth tones. So, if you want to coordinate your lipstick and lipliner, you will need four or more lipliners.

Whatever you decide, it is great! Do you!

LIP CARE

Our lips are organically dry because they don’t have oil glands. For soft, supple, and kissable lips, do the following:

• Remove the dead, dull and dry skin with a sugar scrub two to three times a week,

preferably at night. Then apply a lip balm with jojoba oil. Use balm as needed. Why jojoba oil? Jojoba oil is the closest thing to the natural oil our body produces, so give your lips what they like.

• Many women are not fans of matte lipsticks because they are so dry. You can avoid dry lips simply by applying a lip balm after your lip liner but before your lipstick.

• If you like highly pigmented hues with lip-conditioning and long-wear ingredients, then gel-based lipsticks are the best choice. Does this mean you can drink or kiss someone on the cheek without lipstick residue? No. Most stainresistant lipsticks are alcohol based and will dry out your lips.

From this National Lipstick Day onward, let’s give our lips the love they need and deserve!

Bringing the 'WOW'

to work

Here’s what power dressing means now

Whether we are attending an important event or just going to the office, women tend to ask the same question: What do I wear? We all get hung up sometimes when it comes to clothes, especially when we want to make a certain statement or a positive impression. At times, I get overwhelmed choosing what to wear to work and wonder, “Is this professional enough?” I know I’m not the only one.

When you hear the term “power dressing,” you might envision a standard suit, a structured dress or bland colors. The idea of “power dressing” originated in the 70s to early 80’s when women wanted to be seen as confident, powerful and successful as their male counterparts.

Today, power dressing is all about showcasing who you are in the workplace, with bold colors and office wear that’s a cut above your standard suit. We already know we are successful and that the work we do speaks for itself. Confidence is something that’s in you, but it also can shine through what you wear. Here’s some pieces to add to your closet the next time you feel lost and want to personalize your corporate style:

BLAZERS WITH A TWIST

Go ahead and add any blazer with a print or a powerful color to your wardrobe. One of my favorite colors to use are Kelly greens, cobalt blues and plums. I’m in love with Zara’s green jacquard blazer with a tied-waist detail (www. zara.com); everything about this is elevated and unique, definitely a cut above your ordinary work wear. You can dress this up with just a neutral blouse and still look sophisticated Bold colors, textures and unique styling are what you’re looking for.

VEST OBSESSED

COLOR, COLOR — AND MORE COLOR

Above all, spice up your wardrobe with color. Colors that are complementary to your skin tone and personality will make you shine in the workplace. Incorporating bold colors into your bottoms, skirts, dresses, jumpsuits and even two-pieces is a fun update to your work style. Check out this striped blouse from Mango for inspiration. (shop.mango.com/us)

In case you haven’t noticed, vests are heavily on trend right now. A vest makes any outfit look polished and sophisticated, whether it’s work wear or jeans; take the chic Monika waistcoat by Aligne, for instance (https:// aligne.co/). Most of the time, you will see vests paired with a flared or cropped-style pants. Don’t hesitate to experiment with both.

POWER IN THE PUFF

Love a puff sleeve? Me, too — and they can be office appropriate. Pieces with balloon sleeves are also in, like this one from & Other Stories www.stories.com). Pair with a sleek pant and a heel — perfect! It’s such an easygoing ensemble, and you don’t even have to think about it.

Here are the products she’ll have on hand as she embarks on her college journey:

1. AFFORDABLE SUMMER GLOW

Elf Halo Glow Liquid Filter evens out your complexion while also giving you a summer glow. I sometimes wear it by itself (without foundation/concealer), but other times, I wear it as a primer. It works great either way and only costs $14.

2. SMOOTH-AS-SILK SUN PROTECTION

Hawaiian Tropic Weightless Face Sunscreen is an oil-free lotion sunscreen that feels as if you’re barely wearing it. Not only is this sunscreen SPF 30, but it provides moisture. I use this in the morning under my makeup. It doesn’t cause breakouts and it feels so silky on your face.

3. THE PERFECT HIGHLIGHTER

Rare Beauty Highlighter is my favorite; I have the shade Exhilarate. It doesn’t look like glitter, as most pressed powder highlighters do, and gives more of a liquid look. I love the look of liquid highlighters, but they usually pull some of my makeup off. This highlighter however, is perfect.

4. DYNAMIC SKINCARE DUO

La Roche-Posay Purifying Foaming Cleanser and Clarifying Solution are the perfect pair to add to your skincare routine. The cleanser becomes a foam when mixed with water as it is massaged on your face, and it removes makeup easily. I then follow with the clarifying solution on a cotton pad, and it removes impurities from my pores. I follow these with a moisturizer, and this has left my skin feeling smooth and acne free.

5. THE SECRET TO SOFT, BEACHY WAVES

Bumble and Bumble Surf Styling Leave-In is perfect for a beachy look. I apply a small amount to towel-dried hair, then leave it to air dry. Once dried, my hair looks like I just left the beach — soft, sea-swept waves. This product contains UV protection as well.

6. THE BEST HOLD FOR YOUR BUN OR PONYTAIL

I have danced for as long as I can remember, and for recitals, I always had a slicked-back bun kept in place with hairspray or gel. The new trend is a slicked-back ponytail. I found the TIGI Bead Head: A Hair Stick for Cool People, and it is ideal for achieving both the bun and the new, trendy ponytail. It pushes all the flyaways down, creating a perfect pony without that crunchy texture of a gel or hairspray.

7. MY FAVORITE HAIRSPRAY

Göt2b Glued Hairspray is my favorite hairspray, and it’s only $7. Spray it closer to your hair for a firm hold or further away to keep curls in place and flyaways down.

What makeup makes you feel the most confident? For Ann, it is an iconic red lipstick. And we have the tips you need to re-create her look or make your own confidence-inspiring look.

Nothing says summer fun like a pair of shorts

Summer’s here, and it’s time to soak up some vitamin D and stay cool by wearing shorts. You’ll see various lengths this season, and Bermuda shorts are making a comeback. Fabric is important, too. If you want a dressier look, choose sateen or linen. For a crisp, clean outfit, go with poplin. For super casual, you can wear denim or athleisure.

The same goes for tops; you can’t go wrong with a slim-fitting tee. I opted for a sleeveless bodice and funky wedges for a day of window-shopping and lunch. Whatever you do this season, incorporate a great-looking pair of shorts that are easy, breezy and comfy.

• You can accessorize any pair of shorts perfectly and give them a different feel by adding multiple pieces of jewelry.

• Neutral stone drop earrings, $24.95

Fatigue convertible multistrand necklace, $44.95

• Fatigue pendant necklace, $49.95

All jewelry is from Chico’s off the Rack, Gulfport Premium Outlets

• Look for neutral-colored shorts so you can pair them easily with pick any top.

Mastering space planning:

Tips, tricks and designer hacks

Creating a well-organized and visually appealing space is both an art and a science. Throughout my career, I’ve honed my skills in space planning to transform any area into a functional and stylish haven. Here, I’ll share some tips for effective space planning, along with a few designer hacks you can implement on your own.

UNDERSTANDING SPACE PLANNING

Space planning is the process of arranging furniture, décor and functional elements in a way that maximizes the use and flow of a room. It involves careful consideration of how people move through the space, how the space will be used and how to balance aesthetics with practicality.

Get to know the “golden triangle”: The “golden triangle” is a design principle that involves positioning furniture and other elements in a way that creates a sense of balance and harmony. By

different functions of the space and create distinct zones for each activity. In a living room, for instance, you might have zones for lounging, reading and entertaining. Clearly defined zones help in organizing the space efficiently.

Prioritize traffic flow: Ensure there is a clear path for movement within and between rooms. Avoid placing large furniture pieces in high-traffic areas. A good rule of thumb is to leave at least 3 feet of clearance in pathways.

Balance proportions: Select furniture that fits the scale of the room. Oversized furniture in a small space can make it feel cramped, while undersized pieces in a large room can appear lost. Proportion and balance are key to a harmonious layout.

Use multi-functional furniture: Incorporate multi-functional furniture to maximize space. Items like sofa beds, ottomans with storage and extendable dining tables can serve multiple purposes, making the space more versatile and functional.

spacious. Regularly declutter and organize your belongings. Use baskets, bins and trays to keep items tidy and out of sight. Labeling your baskets, bins and trays is always a great idea!

Use mirrors: Mirrors are a designer’s best friend when it comes to creating the illusion of space. Strategically place mirrors opposite windows to reflect natural light and make the room appear larger and brighter.

DIY art and décor: Personalize your space with DIY art and décor. Create your own artwork, frame family photos or repurpose old items into new, decorative pieces. This adds a unique and personal touch to your home.

understanding the golden triangle, you can create a more functional and aesthetically pleasing space.

Use the “60-30-10” rule: This rule involves dividing a room into three areas: 60% for furniture, 30% for decor and 10% for architectural elements. By following this rule, you can create a balanced and visually appealing space.

Pay attention to scale: The scale of furniture and other elements in a space can greatly impact the overall look and feel. Make sure that the scale of your design elements is appropriate for the size of your space.

TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE SPACE PLANNING

Assess your space: Start by measuring the dimensions of your room. Create a scaled floor plan, noting the locations of doors, windows and any architectural features. This will serve as your blueprint for planning the layout. Define zones: Identify the

Take advantage of vertical space: Make use of vertical space by incorporating tall furniture, shelving and storage solutions. This helps free up floor space and creates the illusion of a larger room.

Make anchor points: Create anchor points in each zone to ground the space. This could be a statement piece of furniture, a large rug or a focal point like a fireplace or a piece of art. Anchor points provide visual stability and structure.

Easy DIY bathtub tray

I didn’t know I needed a bathtub tray until I got one, and let me tell you: It’s a game changer. I don’t always use it while taking a bath, but I love it as decor. It makes my bathroom look and feel like a professional spa. Plus, it’s so easy to make and customize it to your own aesthetic. I made this one very whimsical and feminine, yet rustic, to blend into my modern farmhouse decor.

Want one of your own? Here’s what you need to do:

SUPPLIES

Wood (I used 48-by-11.25-inch piece from Lowes and cut to fit)

Stain (or paint, I used water-based stain, optional)

• Magic Eraser, sponge or stain cloth

Spray shellac or clear-coat spray to seal it

• Handles with hardware

Safety glasses

• Pencil

Straight edge

• Tape measure Paint and stencils for the design (optional)

TOOLS

Jigsaw (or you can use any saw to make a straight cut, or get someone at the lumber store to cut it to size for you)

Drill (with drill bit the right size for your hardware)

• Sander (I use an orbital sander, but you also can use sandpaper or a sanding block.)

STEP 1 - PREP THE WOOD

Measure your bathtub width. Mine is 31.5 inches wide, so I cut my wood to 36 inches to have room for an overhang. Cut your wood to size. You can get your hardware store to cut this for you, or use a jigsaw, circular saw or table saw. Once the wood is cut to size, give it a good sand to get rid of any splinters and prep it for stain or paint. I used an orbital sander with 220 grit and 400 grit. Make sure you round the sharp corners and edges. You definitely can use just sandpaper or a sanding block if you don’t have an electric sander.

STEP 2 - STAIN OR PAINT THE WOOD

Get as creative as you like. I used a water-based stain and mixed two colors to get the color I desired. I also added a little bit of water to my stain to thin it out, helping it to go on smoothly. Wipe off the excess stain with a dry cloth or paper towel. You also can just paint your wood depending on the look you are going for. Once the stain is completely dry, spray with a clear-coat spray. I like the Zinsser Shellac spray because it dries quickly.

Note: If you use an oil-based stain, it definitely will need a clear coat in between the stain and the painted design, as acrylic paint does not like to stick to oil-based stain.

Tip: if you don’t have a stain, or want to be completely natural, you can stain your wood with coffee or tea for a beautiful finish.

STEP 3: PAINT YOUR DESIGN

This is where you can be as creative as you like! I used stencils I bought from Michaels. You also can freehand your design, or use a circuit-cutting machine. I used a paint brush with acrylic paint to lightly add my designs to the wood. The trick is that less is more; you always can add a second coat, but adding too much paint to the stencil will cause it to bleed underneath. Once this is completely dry, spray it again with the clear-coat spray to seal it.

STEP 4: ADD HARDWARE

Using a ruler or measuring tape, find the middle of the wood on both sides and mark where your hardware holes need to be. Use a drill bit the same size as your hardware screws and drill holes. Add your hardware, and you are done. Now you get to decorate!

Tip: Always stain both sides of wood even if you are not going to see the bottom. This will prevent the wood from warping.

Six reasons why we need and love trees

“I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree …”

Here on the Coast, we enjoy the beauty of majestic live oaks. These mighty trees bend with constant winds sweeping across the Gulf. They have survived hurricanes, tornadoes, construction and commercial development. They have provided shade and respite from our sweltering summer heat, as well as food and shelter for many creatures that inhabit our beautiful coastline.

Whether we grew up with trees or learned to appreciate them later in life, few can deny that trees play an important role in enhancing our environment.

So, what are the benefits of trees? Here are some of their major advantages:

1. TREES COOL YOU DOWN

Trees provide shade. Neighborhoods with lots of pavement absorb more heat and can be five to eight degrees hotter than surrounding areas. These areas also stay hotter later into the night. A tree’s shade acts like a natural air conditioner and can even keep down the energy costs of our actual air conditioning systems, which are increasingly working overtime.

2. TREES CLEAN THE AIR

Trees’ food-making process, photosynthesis, involves absorbing carbon dioxide from the air and storing it in its wood. Trees and plants will store this carbon dioxide throughout their lives, helping slow the gas’s buildup in our atmosphere. Older trees do this better than younger trees, so it’s important to save older trees rather than just plant younger replacements.

Trees remove the kind of air pollution that is most dangerous to our lungs: particulate matter. This pollution arises from the burning of fossil fuels and can reach dangerous concentrations in cities, as well as in neighborhoods near highways and factories.

3. TREES CONTROL SOIL AND NUTRIENTS

Tree roots, especially fine, feeder roots, extend as far out from the tree as the tree canopy. These roots stabilize the soil and

4. TREES CONTROL NOISE

Trees planted along property lines help buffer winds and control noise levels. Have you ever seen concrete abatements along the highway? Trees planted in succeeding rows will mitigate street noise or noisy neighbors.

5. TREES HOUSE WILDLIFE

From our windows, many of us can see how much our feathered and furry neighbors enjoy their “high-rise apartments.” Even a single tree can provide a vital habitat for countless species.

6. TREES BOOST OUR WELLBEING

A study by The Nature Conservancy shows that spending time outdoors, including taking a walk among the trees in a city park or even your own backyard, correlates with a drop in anxiety and depression – not to mention the physical benefits of this activity.

Staigle’s Steakhouse brings upscale dining experience to Wiggins

Creole and Cajun-influenced restaurant is well worth the drive

If you are looking for a true farm-to-table dining experience and don’t mind a little travel to get there, plan to visit Staigle’s Steakhouse, which is quickly becoming a destination for food enthusiasts. Located in the heart of downtown Wiggins, the high-end Creole and Cajun-influenced steakhouse offers a modern twist on the farm-to-table dining experience that is not to be missed. Staigle’s Steakhouse opened in December and is the brainchild of Misty and Steve Daigle. Combining highquality, locally sourced ingredients with a commitment to sustainability, the restaurant is worthy of a trip up from the Coast.

Steve and Misty, who live just outside Wiggins, are passionate about fine dining. Frustrated by the lack of local options, they often found themselves traveling to Gulfport or Hattiesburg. “Frankly, we were tired of having to drive so far for a good meal,” Misty says. This inspired the

couple to create their own restaurant, bringing an upscale dining experience to Stone County.

FILLING A NEED

The name Staigle’s, a combination of Steve Daigle’s first and last names, reflects the personal investment Misty and Steve have in their restaurant. As self-proclaimed foodies, their motivation is to bring a fine-dining experience to Stone County, combined with the desire to create a restaurant with an elegant, yet modern ambiance, creative drinks and a world-class menu. Since they couldn’t find a place like that nearby, the pair decided to create one themselves.

“We opened Staigle’s because there’s a need for it,” Misty says. “There was no fine dining in Stone County. We thought that we couldn’t be the only people who felt this way, and we were right. The word got out pretty quickly, and pretty soon our dining room started filling up with people driving up from the Coast, over from New Orleans or down from Hattiesburg to eat with us.”

Misty spearheaded the design of Staigle’s Steakhouse, creating a “sleek, modern and edgy” atmosphere with meticulous attention to detail in every aspect of the decor, from paint colors to dinnerware, and the menu is heavily influenced by Misty’s gardening and farming hobbies. Many of the vegetables served at the restaurant are grown in her Stone County garden, and the eggs used in their dishes come from the 275 chickens she tends on their property.

Staigle’s prides itself on a seasonal menu that adapts to the availability of local produce and meats.

“We provide our guests with a rare finedining experience that combines a farmto-table seasonal menu with a Cajun and Creole flare,” Misty says. Even the Wagyu beef is locally sourced, ensuring that each dish features the freshest ingredients — creating an experience that celebrates the flavors and traditions of the Gulf Coast region.”

GOOD FOOD ROOTED IN COAST TRADITION

During our visit, my fiancé, Lauryn, and I were expertly guided through the dining experience by our head server,

Molly Steiner, who thoughtfully explained each dish. Alexis Guerrero, the beverage director and frontof-house manager, presented us with a variety of excellently crafted drinks that perfectly complemented our meal.

We began our evening with a delightful corn custard amuse topped with chard onion Espuma, a flavorful starter that set the tone for the night. Accompanying this was oak wheat bread served with honey butter, adding a simple, warm touch.

For appetizers, we indulged in several standout dishes. The pork belly served with coleslaw, pepper jelly and pickled peppers was flavorful and rich. The tuna crudo, adorned with citrus, chili and crisp shallots, provided a fresh, zesty contrast. The blue crab gratin, made with bechamel and parmesan, was creamy and decadent.

& Sat 11:00am - 9:00pm Sun, Mon, Wed, & Thur 11:00am - 8:00pm Brunch (Sunday’s 10-2)

Our meal continued with a remarkable wedge salad featuring house-cured bacon, smoked tomatoes and blue cheese dressing. This salad was a favorite of mine, and I already plan to return for it. Even Lauryn, who usually isn’t a fan of blue cheese, found it enjoyable.

For the main courses, Lauryn enjoyed the seared tuna, which featured yellowfin tuna atop dauphinoise — a layered, Frenchstyle potato — paired with wild mushrooms and house-made Worcestershire sauce. I savored the prime black angus ribeye, cooked to perfection and served Oscar style with asparagus and smoked tomatoes and topped with lump crab meat in a lemon butter sauce.

Despite being nearly full, we couldn’t resist dessert. We ended our meal with a delicious blackberry cake and honeysuckle brûlée, accompanied by dessert cocktails, which was a great way to end a fantastic evening.

“We invite our neighbors to come enjoy a rare fine-dining experience on the brick streets of historic downtown Wiggins,” Misty says. “Steve and I are inspired by good food that speaks to the flavors and traditions of the Gulf Coast region, presented in new and exciting ways. We hope to see you soon!”

Staigle’s Steakhouse is open for lunch Monday through Friday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., dinner Wednesday through Saturday from 5-10 p.m. and Sunday brunch from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., featuring a full bar with drink specials, live music and outdoor dining.
