On Aug. 4, we honor the laughs, love, and lifelong friendship shared between sisters

Hooray for National Sisters Day!

She may press your buttons and “borrow” your clothes, but she’s also your closest friend, biggest supporter and most trusted confidante. As those of us lucky enough to have a sister know, there’s no bond quite like it.

That’s why National Sisters Day, observed on Aug. 4 this year, is such a special occasion. It acknowledges all the love, joy and friendship female siblings bring to our lives.

To celebrate, we asked our audience to shout out their sisters on our social media, and we were touched by all the photos of you with your sibling besties. Here were some of our favorite submissions:

“My sister is so awesome! She has always been there for me no matter what. She's a like a second mom to me — my best friend, my therapist, my mentor. She has always looked out for me since I was little." — Penny Tarvin

“You may not believe it, but this is my biological sister. I prayed for her for so many years but got brothers instead. My prayers for a little sister were finally answered sixand-a-half years ago; she was even due on my birthday but hit the world 11 days sooner." — Shanna SP

FUN WAYS TO CELEBRATE THE DAY

• Strike a pose: Get glammed up and have a photoshoot together, commemorating your fierce, fun sibling style.

• Learn a new skill: Participate in an online workshop or attend an in-person skill-building event, whether it's cooking, crafting or painting.

• Give back: Spend the day volunteering for a cause you both believe in.

• Share stories: Break out the family photo albums and revisit fond memories from your childhood, reflecting on your unique experiences and adventures.

• Go shopping: Is there be a better sister bonding activity than retail therapy? If so, we haven’t found it.

CELEBRATING WOMEN IN ENGINEERING

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION

In the field of engineering, Lillian Bains, Savannah Webb, and Marissa Barajas serve as remarkable role models for women. Their stories highlight the importance of mentorship, determination, and the pursuit of challenges. These women demonstrate that with support, passion, and perseverance, there are no limits to what can be achieved.

Lillian Bains, from Gautier, is currently a student at MGCCC’s Jackson County Campus. As a chapter officer with the Pi Epsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and the Southern District Representative for the Mississippi/Louisiana Region of PTK, Lillian is a dedicated leader. She also plays an active role in the Honors College and the Reflections Team, serving as the Historian/Public Relations Coordinator for the 2024-2025 academic year.

Majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Lillian plans to transfer to Mississippi State University to complete her degree and hopes to join MSU’s equestrian team. Her short-term goals include completing her associate degree and securing an engineering internship. Long-term, Lillian aims to start her career in a private company but eventually establish her own engineering firm specializing in automotive parts design.

Lillian’s success and motivation are rooted in the support from her high school physics teacher, Dr. Robert Smith, and her mother, Emma Bains. “I don’t think I would have considered engineering as a career without the support of Dr. Smith and my mother,” she said. At MGCCC, her mentor, Mr. John Miller, has been instrumental in guiding her academic and leadership pursuits.

Savannah Webb, an MGCCC alumna, resides in Ocean Springs and works in Mobile as the Piping Engineering Team Leader at Hargrove Engineers + Constructors.

Savannah’s academic journey began with an associate’s degree in applied science from MGCCC, followed by a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of South Alabama.

Savannah serves on the Advisory Board for the 3D Drafting and Design Technology Committee at the Jackson County Campus. At work, she contributes to the Purview Leadership Committee and acts as a technical assistant to the vice president of the Gulf Coast and Western regions.

Driven by her love for math and a desire to tackle challenges, Savannah’s parents were her biggest mentors, instilling in her the belief in self-discipline and the pursuit of success. She encourages young girls considering engineering to believe in themselves, embrace challenges, and continually strive for growth and excellence.

Marissa Barajas, currently a student at MGCCC’s Jackson County Campus, lives in Moss Point. She is pursuing a major in software engineering and plans to transfer to a university to earn her bachelor’s and master’s degrees upon graduation.

Marissa is deeply involved in campus life, holding leadership positions in various clubs, including parliamentarian in SGA, vice-president in CAB, president in PTK, and memberships in the Oak Club and Hispanic American Club. Her ultimate goal is to work with organizations like NOAA or NASA, programming unmanned maritime robots to explore and clean the oceans.

Marissa’s fascination with technological trends and the potential to create world-changing technologies led her to choose engineering. Her mother has been a significant mentor, encouraging her to pursue her goals and excel in her educational journey.

Crowning achievements

AYODELE'S SUCCESS EXTENDS BEYOND THE PAGEANT STAGE

Ms Black Gulf Coast 2024 is much more than a title to Nastassia Ayodele.

“Representation is so important when it comes to being in a pageant,” says Ayodele, who won the crown in March. “(The title) is a badge of honor because it was started to include women like me, who share the same cultural background.”

Next, the mother of three will vie for the Ms Black Mississippi 2025 title on Sept. 2. She is approaching the pageant, which will be held at Belhaven University in Jackson, with a mix of nervousness and excitement.

“I have been practicing my pageant walk, applying my own makeup and preparing for my talent portion,” Ayodele says. “I want to blow the judges’ minds!”

MORE THAN A PRETTY FACE

Outside of the glitz and glamor, Ms Black Gulf Coast is a devoted mom of three and a seasoned educator. Now a science teacher at West Harrison High School, Ayodele holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from William Carey University.

“It’s so much more than a ‘beauty, pageant’; the contestants are not just brainless, pretty faces,” she says. “Their personalities and intellect are also considered.”

Growing up as a member of Greater Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Ayodele only participated in one previous pageant during her high school years: The Gulf Coast Sunday School and Baptist Training Union Congress Pageant. In that contest, she was crowned Ms. Sunday School BTU 2002.

“Pageants provide contestants an opportunity to gain essential life skills, such as public speaking, professional interactions in a more intimate setting and a sense of selfesteem,” Ayodele says. “Contestants are rewarded for the courage, elegance and poise they display throughout the competition and during their reign.”

IMPLEMENTING THE ‘THREE Cs’

Ayodele also appreciates the emphasis pageantry places on service. In her formative years, she was heavily influenced by local leaders like her great-grandmother, Martha Ree Sims, who was the first female president of the Gulfport Branch of the NAACP. The Southern Baptist Church also played a big part in shaping Ayodele into the woman she is today.

“I grew up helping and giving back to my community,” she says. “I am so proud to say I still do.”

Her membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, Mississippi Gulf Coast Alumni Chapter, is another way Ayodele makes a difference. During her reign, she wants to implement what she calls the "3-C Queen’s Mentality: compassion, commitment, and consistency”

“I want families to become more familiar with what mental health issues look like for them and how they can recognize them, and to know what resources are available to help address them.”

‘IT’S OK TO NOT BE OK’

Her “3-C” philosophy applies especially to crushing stigmas surrounding mental health.

“I want families to become more familiar with what mental health issues look like for them and how they can recognize them, and to know what resources are available to help address them,” Ayodele says. “People need to know that it’s OK to not be OK, and that there's nothing wrong with seeking help with any issues they may have, whether it be within themselves or with someone else.”

To spread this message, she plans to establish a mental health awareness organization for the students at her school. Her biggest personal goal is to continue walking in her purpose and helping others however she can. Professionally, she has considered pursuing a counseling certification.

“I am mostly proud of myself and all that I have accomplished throughout this journey; it has forced me to find confidence that I did not know I possessed,” Ayodele says. “I am so proud of the impact I am making through my reign. I have become more aware of my community’s needs and found more ways in which I can help in a positive way.”

COVER STORY | Bailey Mae Garriga

Bailey & Will

From middle-school sweethearts to happily ever after

William Lee and Bailey Mae Garriga

Like many middle-school romances, Bailey Mae Anderson and William Lee Garriga’s relationship started with a simple text message: “Will you be my girlfriend?”

Given their youth — Will was 13, and Baily was 12 when they met at East Central Middle School in Hurley, Mississippi — not many would expect the pairing to last beyond a few weeks. But the couple defied the odds through years of baseball games and beauty pageants, not to mention dating long distance in college, and they became man and wife on Oct. 21, 2023.

“What I love most about Will is that he is not only my husband, but also my best friend,” his bride says. “We have endured so many different stages in this life together but always find ways to have fun and laugh — even on the bad days.”

THE WEDDING

The day they wed was an exceptionally good day — beautiful and breezy without a cloud in the sky. Bailey, a former reigning Miss Mississippi and Miss USA contestant, wanted “royal wedding vibes” for her celebration at Biloxi’s White House Hotel.

“Our wedding could be described as very timeless and classic …,” she says, citing Catherine, Princess of Wales, as her inspiration. “I chose an all-black-and-white color scheme with very minimal acrylic, gold and silver details.”

The elegance extended to the bridal party, composed of 17 bridesmaids and an equal number of groomsmen, with whom the bride and groom spent the morning.

“My matron of honor did my hair and makeup for the day, which was super special to me, as she also styled me the

night I won Miss Mississippi USA,” Bailey says. “It was a very full-circle moment for us.”

Opting not to do a “first look” before the ceremony, Will and Bailey didn’t see each other until she walked down the aisle — a very emotional moment for them both. Their high school math teacher officiated the wedding and even wrote a poem about their love, which was read during the ceremony and is already a treasured keepsake.

Before entering the party afterward, the couple shared a private first dinner together.

“It was so nice to have that time to debrief and just talk alone before going into the reception space,” she says.

THE RECEPTION

More than 500 people attended the couple’s nuptials, including Lee Greenwood and his wife. The acclaimed singersongwriter was Bailey’s director when she was Miss Mississippi, and he electrified the wedding audience by performing his bestknown hit: “God Bless the USA.”

Those in attendance also enjoyed the couple’s signature cocktails: the Mr. Mississippi for him (an old fashioned) and Mrs. Mississippi for her (strawberry lemon drop martini). The festivities were filled with sentimental moments, paying homage to their 12-year love story, but also were just a plain and simple good time.

“We did not leave the dance floor during our reception and had the absolute best night of our lives,” Bailey says. “I feel that the love we have for one another and for all those who took the time to attend truly radiated in the smiles that were glued to our faces for the entire day.”

A NEW CHAPTER

Following a honeymoon at Sandals Grande St. Lucian in St. Lucia, Will and Bailey have settled into married life in Hurley — the place where they fell in love so many years ago. Some of their plans are to build a house, start a family and raise God-fearing children in the Catholic Church.

If she knew then what knows now, the bride says she wouldn’t have been as worried about the small things. What matters most, she adds, is that two are coming together as one.

“The little details are so insignificant when you look at the big picture and are reminded of being surrounded by all of the people that mean the most to you,” Bailey says. “Your wedding day is only the first day of your marriage — a beautiful beginning to a new chapter.”

Elevate YOUR WEDDING

Transforming an event into an unforgettable experience

Weddings are no longer just events; they are crafted, curated experiences designed to leave a lasting impression. As trends evolve, couples are finding new and innovative ways to infuse their personalities into their big day, ensuring their celebration stands out from the rest. Here are some of the latest trends and unique touches that can take your wedding to the next level:

IMMERSIVE GUEST EXPERIENCES

Personalized welcome kits: Gone are the days of simple welcome bags. Couples are now curating personalized welcome kits that include local goodies, custom itineraries and thoughtful touches like snack bags or personalized notes for each guest. These kits not only make guests feel special but also set the tone for the entire celebration.

Interactive food and drink stations: Think beyond traditional catering with interactive food and drink stations. From build-your-own taco bars to craft cocktail stations, these setups impress guests and make dining a fun, memorable part of the day.

Entertainment variety:

Incorporating various forms of entertainment throughout the night can keep energy levels high and guests engaged. Consider a live band for the ceremony, a DJ for the reception and perhaps even a surprise performance or a late-night silent disco to keep the party going.

UNIQUE DECOR AND AMBIANCE

Eco-friendly elements: Sustainable weddings are on the rise. Couples are opting for eco-friendly decor like potted plants that can double as guest favors, recycled paper invitations and biodegradable confetti. These elements not only enhance the aesthetic but also benefit the environment.

Themed experiences: Themed weddings are becoming more popular, allowing couples to fully immerse their guests in their chosen motif. Whether it’s a whimsical fairytale, a rustic countryside retreat or a glamorous Great Gatsbyinspired soirée, thoughtful details like themed decor, costumes, and coordinated music can transport guests to another world.

Statement installations: Make a bold impression with statement installations, such as oversized floral arches, hanging greenery or custom light displays. These show-stopping pieces not only serve as stunning backdrops for photos, but they also add a unique and personal touch.

INTERACTIVE AND PERSONAL TOUCHES

Guest participation: Encourage guest participation with activities like a collaborative art piece, a photo booth with props related to the couple’s story or a video message station where guests can leave heartfelt messages. These interactive elements create lasting memories and keep guests entertained.

Custom keepsakes:

Providing guests with custom keepsakes, such as personalized candles, bespoke jewelry or handmade crafts, ensures they leave with a tangible memory. These unique favors reflect the couple’s personality and add a special touch to the celebration.

Live streaming: For those who can’t attend in person, live streaming has become a popular trend. This ensures that all loved ones, regardless of location, can be part of the special day. It also allows for creative opportunities, like incorporating remote guests into speeches or toasts via video.

TIMELESS AND

Hourglass-shaped gowns with a cowl neck , perhaps with just a hint of sparkle and pearls, also have been a big hit this year. This easy, breezy style is perfect for an outdoor or beach wedding!

As the year progressed, the trend edged toward form-fitting lace gowns, some with sleeves draped slightly off the shoulder. This trend was especially popular with brides who were remarrying or renewing their vows, or those who wanted to imbue even more romance into their day.

The top wedding dress trends of 2024

Bridal fads come and go, but some 2024 wedding dress trends have staying power. Janie D Roberson of Bella Grace Bridals and Formals walks us through the styles that have brides swooning this year:

4

Finally, my favorite trend — a dazzling fit and flare with all the bells and whistles. It starts with diamonds and ends with pearls all the way to the train. This is for the bride who wants it all the more drama, the better!

1

“...it’s all about you and your day. Don’t ever second guess your ‘wow’ dress. Do not settle!’

2024 bridal trends kicked off with a timeless silhouette, a sweetheart neckline satin ballgown. A bow in the back adds an extra flourish the bigger, the better. Brides seem to like the big ballgown princess feel, which is a true classic.

WISPY FLORALS

Make your big day unforgettable with these floral trends

BLOOMING gorgeous

Flowers are a focal point of any wedding, and they go a long way toward creating the vibe of your big day. If you want a standout celebration, check out some of the floral trends that are in full bloom for 2024:

Pro tip: For that special touch, you can add a “something old” element to your bouquet, like a rosary, grandma’s brooch or small family pictures in a frame for remembrance.

This style is inspired by wildflowers and untamed gardens; think loose, airy bouquets and arrangements with flowers like poppies, ranunculus and cosmos. These arrangements typically are not densely packed and use minimal filler flowers or greenery.

MINIMAL GREENERY

While greenery always has been a popular choice, there’s a move toward using less of it in 2024 and allowing the flowers to take center stage.

GROOMS’ POCKET FLOWER

I love this trend! They hold up so much better than a pin-on boutonniere.

FOCUS ON NON-FLORAL ELEMENTS

While flowers remain a major part of wedding decor, there’s a growing trend of incorporating other elements like pampas grass, dried flowers and feathers.

Jean McGrury is owner/planner at After the Proposal Weddings & Events. Reach her at atpweddings@gmail.com.

HIGH-IMPACT INSTALLATIONS

Large-scale floral installations are becoming more popular. These can be used to create a dramatic focal point at the ceremony or reception venue.

BRIGHT, BOLDLY COLORED BLOOMS

White is a wedding staple, but couples are increasingly opting for colorful flowers in their wedding decor. This trend includes using a variety of colors and bold hues to create a vibrant, eye-catching aesthetic.

Tenesha Batiste Hosts BridgertonInspired Birthday Brunch

CELEBRATING LIKE royalty

Dearest, gentle readers — who doesn’t want to feel like a queen on her birthday? And what could be more regal than a Bridgertonthemed soiree?

Tenesha D. Batiste, talent acquisition manager for Ingalls Shipbuilding and owner of planning firm Tenesha & Company, is a busy lady, but she uses her June birthday to connect with those closest to her. For her 42 nd birthday this year, she invited women near and dear to her heart to a Bridgerton-inspired brunch at 3.11 Events in Pascagoula.

Guests were encouraged to wear attire in keeping with the hit show, set in Regency-era London, including gloves and fascinators. Batiste was delighted to see how her attendees embraced the theme.

Seated in a white, throne-like chair, Batiste wore a gown worthy of Bridgerton’s Queen Charlotte. Sheena Myles played the part of the mysterious Lady Whistledown and hosted the event in full costume. Guests were welcomed with drinks by Party Sips Mobile Drink Bar, a new business owned by Raven Petty, which was launched at the event.

The menu, professionally catered by Dyshika Osgood, consisted of shrimp and

grits, chicken and waffles, fruit, crab salad, corn salad, broccoli salad and a charcuterie board.

Lady Whistledown also facilitated a fashion show and games, and winners received a gift. Favors included ornate gold handheld mirrors, fans and gift bags. The themed cake and other desserts were designed and customized by Jennifer Mayfield of Sugar Tribe Sweet Treats and Events.

Delve into these delicious cake trends

A cake is more than just a dessert; it’s a celebration centerpiece! From ornate icing and pearls to fruit and flowers, there’s infinite ways to put a personal stamp on your confection.

If you want a cake that feels of-the-moment, take some inspiration from 2024’s hottest cake trends. Here are a few of my favorites:

VINTAGE CHARM

Vintage cakes have made their way back into our hearts, and as cake makers, we could not be more thrilled! These cakes generally feature timeless, yet nostalgic, designs that evoke past eras. Elements often include delicate piping, sugar flowers, pearls, ruffles and, of course, lots of pastels. How enchanting!

PRESSED FLOWERS

Florals for wedding cakes? Groundbreaking. But this season, our brides are opting for pressed flowers with their natural, elegant and artistic appeal. This style can be used on buttercream cakes, as well as fondant or even naked cakes. Love an understated vibe? Scatter the flowers around the cake, leaving lots of icing showing through. Or if you’re going for a visually stunning look, cover the cake completely using lots of color and greenery throughout.

Pro tip: There are plenty of online resources available for ordering flowers that already have been pressed, but if you really want to have fun, you can pick out your favorites and press them yourself by placing them between sheets of parchment paper with a heavy object on top. Of course, be sure to check with your local baker or florist to find out which varietals are food safe.

PERFECT IMPERFECTIONS

Prince Harry and his bride, Meghan, ruffled lots of feathers back in 2018 when they opted for a confection without the grandeur and intricacies of a typical royal wedding cake. Their cake, while exquisite, featured unfinished edges at the top, which gave it a more relaxed feel.

That trend spread like wildfire, and to this day, it remains one of my favorite designs for any cake. Leave the edges as they are, or you may even opt for a touch of gold luster painted along the top for a more elevated finish. Trends like these emphasize a move toward simplicity and natural beauty, which reflects a more casual and intimate mood for your celebration.

Dixie Newman and Richard

Hawthorne

UNTRADITIONAL MEETS glam Hollywood

Wedding date: June 23, 2024

White House Hotel, Biloxi

Was it love at first sight when Dixie Newman met her future husband, Richard Hawthorne?

Well, the bride says, yes and no. Richard is a professional power lifter and the owner of Core Strong Living, which opened last January just a few doors down from Dixie’s Biloxi business, Jacked Up Coffee. Dixie’s mom started working out with Richard, and for about a year, he regularly hung out at the coffee shop on his downtime.

“Of course, I thought he was attractive, smart and such a kind gentleman, but we are total opposites,” says Dixie, who is also a Biloxi city councilman. “I did start to feel something for him but kept fighting it because of those differences. I’m so glad I let that ridiculous wall down or I would have missed out on the best thing God was trying to bring me.”

On their wedding day, the bride admired her groom’s “beautiful and nervous smile” as she walked down the aisle and her tears flowed.

“That moment truly was the best feeling, and I’d dreamed of how it would feel for so long,” Dixie says. “The butterflies were everything.”

matters: coming together as one under God.

Later, the couple enjoyed letting loose and getting down with their loved ones on the dance floor. Above all, Dixie advises other brides-to-be to focus on what really

“Let all the rest go; it doesn’t need to be perfect,” she says. “It doesn’t need to be expensive or huge or what everyone else wants. It also does not need to be traditional. Marry the love of your life, and celebrate with your loved ones … . Enjoy the moment, and take it all in.”

fall’s hottest GET AHEAD OF THE FASHION CURVE WITH trends

FROM BOLD REDS TO RECYCLED LEATHER, THESE STANDOUT STYLES SHOULD BE ON YOUR RADAR

New season, new trends! Well, that’s not completely true, as some trends stay and evolve while others are in and out so fast that you don’t even have a chance to try them. There’s a time and place for “trendy,” but a look that’s elevated, effortless and classic — and perhaps incorporates a chic trend on occasion — is timeless. Think ballet flats, wide-leg denim, belts and blazers.

Having said that, I’m excited to share some of my favorite trends that were on repeat with high-end contemporary brands in New York City and elsewhere. Fall may feel far away, but the fashion world is already gearing up for the next season. Try a trend that you maybe haven’t tried previously and make it your own while incorporating your personal style. You can bet these trends will have staying power for seasons to come:

Sharon Weeks is owner/manager of Grant’s for Her in Biloxi. Reach her at (228) 818-3233.

RED ALERT

We’re starting off strong with a bold color for fall: red! This color is hot in all shades, from cranberry to crimson to cherry. We’re not just talking about a pop of color; we’re talking fully monochromatic looks. This trend extends beyond red, too, to bold gemstone colors like emerald. But if you prefer just a pop of color, chartreuse is another fall favorite (I don’t suggest this one in a head-to-toe look).

RECYCLED LEATHER

Another trend I saw at Los Angeles market recently (and loved) was recycled leather. It’s less than half the price of real leather and a pair of pants in this material looks just as good as a brand-new pair of $1,000 leather pants.

OBSESSED WITH OUTERWEAR AND FEMININE DETAILS

Also on the trend list was outerwear; think puffer vests, but with a preppy, feminine touch. Speaking of feminine, we saw lots of bow details — on bags, shoes and beyond. Ruffles are getting their moment for the autumn season, as well as florals, and one-shoulder necklines shouldn’t be missed, either.

MAD ABOUT MENSWEAR

Finally, on the opposite end of the spectrum, we see menswear-inspired styles continuing to dominate the fall wardrobe lineup. Look for patch-pocket blazers, oversized jackets and studded hardware on buttery leather flats, belts and miniskirts.

Taking all of these into consideration, which trends speak to you? Start with one or two, but remember that less is more and try not to wear them all at once. The best look is one that complements your personality and lifestyle and makes you feel confident and ready to take on the world!

Ditch the double chin

Do you have some extra fullness under your chin? Perhaps you’ve had it your whole life, or maybe it has developed over time and you just noticed it recently. This condition is called submental fullness, more commonly known as the dreaded double chin.

WHAT CAUSES A DOUBLE CHIN?

Submental fullness can be caused by weight gain, genetics and/or aging. You don’t have to be overweight to have fullness under your chin, and sometimes, the condition won’t go away no matter how much you exercise or diet.

If you are bothered by submental fullness, you are not alone. According to a 2015 survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), 67% of people surveyed said they are bothered by the fat beneath their chin. In fact, the survey results showed that people are just as bothered by submental fullness as they are by lines and wrinkles under their eyes.

AN INJECTIBLE BREAKTHROUGH

For those who want to firm up their chin area but don’t want to undergo surgery, there are other options. Kybella is a first-of-

its-kind prescription medication for those with submental fullness. It’s the only injectable treatment approved by the Food and Drug Administration that destroys fat cells in the under-chin area to improve the patient’s profile.

People often choose Kybella because it has a lower recovery time than surgery and therefore fewer risks. Kybella injections also are an option for people who aren’t good candidates for facial plastic surgeries like liposuction or a neck lift.

WHAT DOES KYBELLA DO?

Kybella’s active ingredient is synthetic deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected beneath the chin, Kybella destroys fat cells, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fullness. Once destroyed,

these cells no longer can store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not expected once you reach your aesthetic goal.

HOW THE TREATMENT PROCESS WORKS

Considering Kybella? Here are some other things you should know:

• Before starting treatment, your healthcare specialist will examine the area under and around your chin to determine if Kybella is right for you. Then, your specialist will tailor your treatment to the amount of fat under the chin and your aesthetic goals.

• Treatment only can be administered by a Kybellatrained healthcare specialist. At each treatment, you will receive multiple small injections, and the injection process takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The exact number of injections depends on the amount of fat you have under your chin and your desired profile.

• Since everyone’s chin profile is different, the number of treatments varies among patients. Your healthcare specialist will help determine how many treatment sessions you need based on the amount and distribution of your submental fat and your personal treatment goals.

• Each treatment session is spaced at least one month apart, and you should not receive more than six treatments. After treatment, you probably will have some swelling, bruising or numbness under your chin. Many patients experience visible results after two to four treatments.

The beauty of balayage

Save time and money with this on-the-rise hair-coloring trend

Women are embracing their natural hair color with lived-in balayage. It’s easy to care for, saves time and money and creates a natural look with techniques that are specifically designed to accentuate each woman’s best features. With all these benefits, it’s no wonder balayage has become one of the most popular hair-coloring trends over the past couple years.

Has this trend piqued your interest? Here’s what you need to know:

MAINTENANCE

Balayage creates a longer-lasting color with minimal maintenance. For example, your typical highlight will last around six to 12 weeks before you need a touch up, whereas a balayage allows you to go up to six months before needing a refresh.

So, what other maintenance is recommended for a balayage? Come in every six to eight weeks for a gloss and conditioning treatment to keep the color rich and the hair healthy. This is important for maintaining the hair’s integrity. Healthy hair is happy hair!

HOW IT WORKS

Balayage and highlights are different in many ways, one being application. Traditional highlights typically go all the way to the root for maximum brightness, while balayage is hand painted onto the hair using sweeping motions for a softer, more natural and sun-kissed look.

Because traditional highlights create more defined lines, they tend to grow out in a more noticeable way and require more frequent touchups, but balayage blends more seamlessly with the natural root color, making for a less-noticeable grow out.

easy steps to a ‘WOW’ wardrobe

How to look polished, put together and appropriate for any occasion

There really is no big secret to looking fabulous. You just need to take the time to learn your body type, how to dress it and choose the right styles for you. Once you have that down, dressing well is as easy as 1, 2, 3!

Here are three easy steps to a WOW wardrobe:

1. KEEP ONLY WHAT YOU LOVE

Studies show that 80% of people wear 30% of what’s hanging in their closet. What a shame! You can change this by having an efficient closet. Fill it with pieces that fit well, make you feel great and are right for your lifestyle. Make sure you love everything you wear! Imagine getting dressed every day in outfits that make you happy and leave you looking amazing. Organize your closet in a way that makes dressing easy and sensible. You’ll save time and money, too!

2. ‘BLAST’ YOUR OUTFIT

BLAST is an acronym for bottoms, layer, accessories, shoes and topper. This is the order in which you should get dressed. Find the bottoms first, and build your outfit around them. Then choose a layer for the top. It could be a blouse, tee or sweater. You also can choose a camisole to wear underneath another top.

Now it’s time to add personality and make the ensemble your own

with accessories. Consider jewelry, scarves and handbags when putting the look together.

Next, you’ll want to pick shoes. This decision can determine whether your outfit looks dressy or casual. You’ll also have to consider comfort. What are your plans? How long will you be wearing them? Will you be mainly walking, sitting or standing?

Lastly, you’ll need a topper. This could be a cardigan, blazer, poncho, or a top to wear over a camisole, tank or bralette. You’re all done! Ta da!

3. CHECK YOURSELF IN THE MIRROR

I know this sounds very elementary, but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve changed my mind after putting together an entire outfit. Seeing the full picture ensures your look is cohesive. Get a full-length mirror so you can see yourself from head to toe. Check the weather forecast so you’ll be prepared. Feeling great? Now you’re a pro! Don’t forget to post a selfie on your social media with #lovemylook.

In February of 2012, I had a benign tumor removed from each breast. In November of 2019, I had an abnormal mammogram. The MRI showed it was a “wellcircumscribed oval anechoic cyst; probably benign. Follow up in six months.” I should’ve asked for a biopsy, but I trusted that it was benign because the previous tumors had been.

No follow up happened in 2020, and in May of 2021, I was prescribed Estradiol for severe hot flashes. Two weeks later, I felt a large lump in my right breast. My mammogram was scheduled for June, so I waited. Don’t do this; never wait!

I had the mammogram, followed by a biopsy, and discovered it was breast cancer. The tumors were 5.5 centimeters and 2.4 centimeters, respectively. The official diagnosis was stage-three, grade-three, triple-negative invasive mammary carcinoma. This type tends to grow and spread faster, has fewer treatment options and tends to have the worst outcome.

MY APPROACH

Whether I live or die, I win, and I wanted to represent God well through this. I knew that God had a plan, and it was a good plan. He was and is in control. Even when I felt so sick, I knew this was temporary and God was going to bring me through. I kept telling myself that when I’m weak, God is strong.

MY TREATMENT

On Aug. 4, 2021, I started chemo (adriamycin and cyclophosphamide), and that September, I started 12 Taxols (a type of chemo). The next January, I had a double mastectomy and stayed flat. It showed that the tumors had shrunk to 1.2 centimeters and 3 centimeters with lymph node involvement; seven lymph nodes were removed, and three were positive for cancer.

I started 30 radiation sessions in March of 2022, and in May of that year, I started eight cycles of Xeloda (a chemotherapy drug) at six pills a day. I couldn’t complete the eighth cycle due to the side effects, including toe infection, neuropathy, burning, bright red hands and feet, stomach pain, sever fatigue, depression and brain fog.

On Nov. 1, 2022, a CT scan showed no evidence of disease! They never will say I’m “cancer free” because of my aggressive diagnosis.

That December, I had the first of many reconstruction surgeries the DIEP flap. This involves taking the skin and fat from my belly and reconstructing my breast. My fifth surgery is scheduled for the end of this month; I’m hoping that will be the last.

THE HARDEST PART

Chemo is hard! I understand why some quit. I tried to get out of bed and go into work every day, even for just an hour or so, but there were days I couldn’t

journey, but I will be the best I can be moving forward.

last

get out of bed. I am so thankful that I had many people praying for me. I had a great support system. My family, friends and church family are amazing! I felt them holding me up when I couldn’t hold myself up. They brought us food, cleaned my house a couple of times, did yard work and encouraged me through it all.

WHAT LIFE IS LIKE NOW

Life is slowing getting better; I say slowly because the chemo has damaged my body. It did a good job of killing the cancer cells, but it also damaged good things in my body. I still have fatigue, neuropathy in my hands and feet and tachycardia. I have developed more frequent and severe migraines, body and joint aches and stomach issues. I take a lot of medication to help with these problems, but the medication doesn’t always work. I have had to relearn my body and my limitations. I will never be who I was before this

HOW THIS EXPERIENCE CHANGED ME

I think having cancer has helped me be more thankful. I’m grateful to be alive and able to spend time with my family, including my grandsons, and my friends. The thing I am most proud of since my diagnosis is going skydiving. That was an amazing experience, and I can’t wait to do it again!

MY ADVICE TO OTHERS

• Find a support system. If you don’t have family and friends that will hold you up and help you, join a support group. There are so many out there.

• Listen to your doctors. Do exactly what they say, then you can tweak the medication as symptoms arise.

• Be your own advocate. Doctors don’t always tell you everything. Do your own research (not just Google) and ask a lot of questions.

• Most importantly, get things checked out. You know your body better than anyone, and if you know something is off, go get checked. You’re worth it!

Worried about your child being bullied?

Here’s 10 ways you can help

The tragic death of Ocean Springs teen Aubreigh Wyatt devasted the Coast community and left many moms facing the same terrifying thought: What if this were my child?

Thirteen-year-old Wyatt allegedly was experiencing bullying before taking her own life last September. Interest in the case has resurfaced amid news reports of a lawsuit filed against Heather Wyatt, Aubreigh’s mother, by the families of four of her daughters’ alleged bullies — claiming slander, defamation and negligence against the girls.

Sadly, studies by Yale University have shown that over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide, and almost 7 percent have attempted it. Bullying victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than nonvictims, the studies found.

Meanwhile, mothers often feel helpless and worried, wondering how they can protect their children. Rest assured that parents can play a crucial role in helping their children cope with bullying and other challenges. Here are sone steps you can take:

1. ENCOURAGE OPEN COMMUNICATION

Actively listen and encourage your child to talk about his or her day and listen without interrupting. Show empathy and understanding.

2. GATHER INFORMATION

If your child is experiencing bullying or struggling in some other way, make sure you understand what is happening, who is involved and where it occurs. Keep a record of bullying incidents, including dates, times, and descriptions.

3. TEACH COPING STRATEGIES

Encourage activities that build self-esteem and confidence. Teach your child how to assertively respond to bullies without escalating the situation.

4. WORK WITH THE SCHOOL

Inform teachers, school counselors and administrators about what is happening. Collaborate with them to develop a plan to ensure your child’s safety and follow up frequently.

5. DEVELOP A SUPPORT SYSTEM

Encourage friendships and help your child build a support network. Consider consulting a counselor or therapist if the situation warrants professional help.

6. MONITOR ONLINE ACTIVITY

Teach your child about safe online behavior and monitor their online interactions. Ensure your child’s social media accounts have the proper privacy settings.

7. MODEL APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR

Demonstrate how to handle conflicts calmly and respectfully. Show empathy and respect in your interactions with others.

8. EMPOWER YOUR CHILD

Help your child develop strategies to solve problems and deal with bullying. Give your child a say in how he or she wants to handle the situation.

9. CREATE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT

Ensure your child feels safe and supported at home. Praise your child when he or she shows courage and resilience.

10. STAY INVOLVED

Regularly check in with your child about his or her experiences and feelings. Be aware of the signs of bullying and stay informed about the issue.

Yale University studies have shown that over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide, and almost 7 percent have attempted it. Bullying victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims, the studies found.

When my dad suffered a stroke, it was my turn to help him with important decisions, like making the right choice in rehabilitation. I asked the medical professionals that treated him who they trusted for the best care and outcomes. They referred us to a place that created a rehabilitation program

specifically designed for his needs using advanced technology and innovative treatments. And he was cared for by a highly trained, experienced staff that showed professionalism and compassion throughout his recovery. Now I know why they are the trusted choice of medical professionals.

Storm warning:

THE TELLTALE SIGNS OF MINI STROKES

FROM SINGING RIVER HEALTH SYSTEM

Before a tornado hits, it typically announces itself with some classic indicators: huge hail, a dark, almost green sky and emergency sirens. By heeding these warnings from Mother Nature, we have more time to take cover before seeing a twister.

When something is wrong with our health, bodies will often provide indicators. Ignoring symptoms of a serious illness is like going out on the porch to watch a funnel cloud roar into the yard while a harried meteorologist, pleading with us to take cover, plays on TV in the background. Take strokes, for example.

MINI STROKES MAY WARN OF WORSE TO COME

Prior to a stroke, the body may receive a warning in the form of a transient ischemic attack (TIA), commonly referred to as “mini stroke.” Professionals in neurology are moving away from using the term “mini stroke” because the word “mini” makes it sound much less serious than it is.

While TIAs are usually temporary and do not cause permanent brain damage, The Big One may be on the way. After a TIA, 10% will have a major stroke within two days, 15% will have a stroke within three months and 25% will have a recurrent event within three months, which is another TIA or a major stroke.

A major stroke, which can cause permanent injury or death, is as dangerous as an F5 twister headed in your direction.

RISK FACTORS FOR TRANSIENT ISCHEMIC ATTACK

There is an increased risk for a TIA with poorly controlled risk factors, such as:

• High blood pressure

• High cholesterol

• Diabetes

• Heart condition

• Smoking

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A TIA

During a TIA, there is a temporary disruption in the blood supply to a part of the brain. This is usually caused by a temporary blood clot in a blood vessel of the brain.

SYMPTOMS OF TIAS

The symptoms of a TIA are like those of a regular stroke but usually milder

and not as long-lasting. They can include sudden:

• Weakness or numbness in the face, arm or leg, typically on one side of the body

• Confusion or trouble speaking or understanding speech

• Trouble seeing in one or both eyes

• Trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination

• Severe headache with no known cause

TIA symptoms typically last for a few minutes to a few hours and resolve on their own. If symptoms persist or worsen, it could indicate a major stroke.

MEDICAL CARE FOR TIAS

• Call 911; a TIA is a medical emergency. The symptoms may go away quickly, but they may return. By calling 911, EMS can perform an evaluation and provide safe transportation to the emergency room.

• When the patient gets to the hospital, their doctor probably will perform a physical exam, blood tests and brain scans to determine where their TIA

originated. Depending on the cause, treatment may include medications to lower blood pressure, prevent future blood clots or lower cholesterol or surgery to remove blood-vessel blockages.

RECOVERY AND PREVENTION

Stroke survivors must take care of themselves after a TIA to reduce their risk of a future stroke. It’s always easier said than done, but after a TIA, stroke survivors should eat a balanced diet, exercise, quit smoking, get adequate sleep and take their medication. Prioritizing yourself can be difficult, but self-care is paramount during this time.

By being vigilant and heeding the warning signs, you can change your health forecast.

HAVING TROUBLE BREASTFEEDING? HELP IS AVAILABLE FOR COAST MOMS

FROM MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM

Breastfeeding can be both challenging and beautiful. Although it seems like the most natural of acts, success can take plenty of patience, research and support from organizations committed to serving all Coast families.

Breastfeeding offers valuable benefits for both moms and babies, but making it accessible to everyone means understanding and overcoming challenges. Tiffany Hills, international board-certified lactation consultant, and Sandra Johnson, certified lactation consultant, give moms support and guidance through the Breastfeeding Center at Memorial.

ACCESS TO SUPPORT

These experts say that free resources available in the community, like the Mississippi MILC League, La Leche League, lactation consultants at Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and community baby showers, have proven very effective. They add that their consultants work closely with the WIC program to deliver personalized breastfeeding help. Community baby showers are special events where information and resources are shared with expectant moms in a welcoming, supportive setting.

FOR FAMILIES

• Memorial’s Breastfeeding Center: call (228) 867-4053 or visit wearememorial.com

• La Leche League: visit lllusa.org

• WIC: visit wicbreastfeeding. fns.usda.gov

• U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division can help you determine whether you have the right to take breaks to pump at work. Call the helpline at 1-866-4USWAGE for support.

“When I started here in 2005, only two in 10 mothers initiated breastfeeding,” Tiffany recalls. “Now …, eight in 10 mothers initiate breastfeeding.” The Breastfeeding Center at Memorial provides timely follow-up appointments and early interventions that positively impact breastfeeding journeys.”

LOOKING AHEAD

The continued efforts to provide access and resources ensure that all mothers, no matter their insurance status, receive essential information and support. Minority communities often face specific barriers to breastfeeding, such as lack of family support, language differences, limited prenatal care and the need to return to work early without proper accommodations for pumping.

“We address these challenges by having mothers work with WIC on education, offering free breastfeeding education classes here at the hospital once a month and providing outpatient followup appointments in our Breastfeeding Center after discharge,” one consultant explains.

CELEBRATING SUCCESS STORIES

These efforts are making a real difference.

Tiffany and Sandra know the importance of getting the whole family involved in supporting breastfeeding moms.

“Get the family supportive and engaged in helping the mom succeed,” one consultant advises. “Approaching each mother’s journey with an open mind and personalizing the support to her needs and wants is crucial.”

They add, “We aim to participate in more community baby showers, spread the word about our free breastfeeding classes and collaborate with more healthcare providers to enhance both prenatal and postnatal support.”

Cholesterol: The good, the bad, and tips for managing both

GOOD AND BAD CHOLESTEROL: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Doctors check cholesterol levels with a blood test known as a lipid profile. The test will evaluate low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and triglycerides. Low-density lipoprotein, better known as LDL, is the bad cholesterol that causes plaque buildup in the arteries, leading to a possible heart attack or stroke. High-density lipoprotein, or HDL, is the good cholesterol and can lower your risk of heart disease and stroke. Triglycerides are a fat in our blood that our body uses for energy. The amount of cholesterol in your blood is based on your LDL, HDL and triglyceride numbers. What are good and bad numbers? To stay healthy, you want a total cholesterol level of about 150 mg/dL. If that number exceeds 200 mg/dL, you have high cholesterol and need to act to lower it. First, you need to look at what causes high cholesterol. Type 2 diabetes and obesity are two common factors. Lifestyle also plays a role. If your diet consists of high-fat foods and you don’t get enough exercise, those factors can raise your risk. High cholesterol can also be genetic.

Cholesterol often is synonymous in people’s minds with blocked arteries, heart attacks and strokes. However, cholesterol is an important part of a healthy body. The liver produces the waxy, fat-like substance that helps your body produce new cells, repair damaged tissue and produce hormones like estrogen. We also get cholesterol from some of the foods we eat.

The problem arises when your body has too much of the wrong kinds of cholesterol. High levels of bad cholesterol can cause arterial plaque buildup, which can reduce blood flow. The result is an increased risk for heart disease, heart attack or stroke.

And despite some misconceptions, high cholesterol is not just an “older person’s problem.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that children have their cholesterol checked between the ages of 9 and 11, and again between ages 17 and 21. Children who have more risk factors, like obesity or diabetes, need their cholesterol checked more often.

TIPS FOR LOWERING YOUR CHOLESTEROL

• If you are trying to lower your cholesterol, there are foods you should avoid or have in moderation, such as red meats like beef and pork, as well as full-fat dairy products like whole milk, cream and butter. Baked goods and treats are not part of a healthy cholesterol diet, and you also will want to avoid fried foods.

• Incorporate natural foods like spinach and leafy green vegetables into your diet. Beans, sweet potatoes, broccoli and other vegetables are high in fiber and great for you. Stock up on fruits and berries. Apples, oranges, strawberries and other fruits will help keep your cholesterol in check, too. Add nuts like almonds to your shopping list. When cooking, use olive oil. Eat skinless chicken or turkey. Try fish like salmon and tuna.

• Once you have eaten a healthy meal, go for a walk. Walking is one of the best exercises to lower your cholesterol. If you feel like picking up the pace, go for a jog or run. Swimming, biking and yoga are also great exercises. Do not forget your strength training. Lifting weights will help keep your cholesterol numbers lower.

• Doing all this exercise means you’ll need to stay well hydrated. A recent study showed that water may help control cholesterol levels.

These changes won’t impact your cholesterol levels overnight. It will take about three to six months before you will notice a change. If a diet and exercise adjustment don’t help, your doctor may prescribe a cholesterollowering medication — the most common type being statins. This medication decreases your LDL (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides and slightly increases your HDL (good cholesterol). Talk to your healthcare provider and research the pros and cons before deciding the best course of action.

Supplements like fish oil, berberine, ground flaxseed, garlic, green tea and niacin may be beneficial. However, as with medication, there may be side effects. Check with your healthcare provider.

Awaiting the birth of a child is a joyous time; but for many expectant mothers, pregnancy comes with some unwelcome side effects, including varicose and spider veins.

As if pregnancy and childbirth weren’t difficult enough, why, oh why, must varicose and spider veins affect about 40% of pregnant women? During pregnancy, changes in the body’s vascular and hormonal systems can cause vein disease for numerous reasons:

• The amount of blood increases 30-50% during pregnancy. This extra blood is still confined to the same number of vessels, so the added volume increases vascular pressure, causing the veins to stretch and valves to strain.

• As progesterone levels rise, veins and vessels relax to allow for the extra blood volume. This further allows the veins to enlarge and makes blood susceptible to pooling; valves may malfunction by refluxing.

• The growing uterus presses on the inferior vena cava, the body’s largest vein, which in turn increases pressure in the leg veins.

• Mothers are more likely to develop varicose and spider veins if other members of their family have had them.

• Multiple pregnancies, carrying twins or multiples, and standing for long periods also can make you more susceptible.

Now that we know the “why,” how can pregnant women combat

the development of varicose and spider veins? With a few tips and tricks, venous insufficiency may be preventable.

• Low-impact exercises: One of the best ways to avoid vein disease is to get the blood pumping. Physical exercise like walking, biking, swimming and yoga are great ways to stimulate blood flow without increasing stress on the joints or vascular system.

• R epositioning: It’s advised to avoid sitting and standing for long periods, which restricts efficient blood flow. If working a sedentary job or traveling, take short breaks to walk around and do toe-heel raises to stimulate blood flow.

• Leg elevation: While resting, elevate your legs above your heart and avoid crossing your legs. This helps reduce vascular resistance and promotes blood flow.

• Left-side sleeping: Sleeping on your left side can help relieve the stress and pressure from the uterus onto the inferior vena cava.

• Compression therapy: Benefits include reduces swelling, relieves aches and pains, supports relaxed vessels, reduces stress on the valves, promotes of effective valve function, decreases venous inflammation and diminishes blood pooling and reflux.

• Comfortable clothes and shoes: Avoiding tight, restrictive clothing and shoes is a great way to promote circulation during pregnancy.

By understanding the relationship between vein disease and pregnancy, women can be more prepared for what to expect throughout their pregnancy and postpartum journey.

5 ways to beat back-to-school stress

Summer’s nearly over, and you’re bracing yourself for the inevitable chaos to come. Soon, you’ll be hustling half-asleep kids out the door and scrambling to juggle your family’s packed schedule. Meanwhile, your little ones will face challenges of their own: new teachers, new classmates, harder homework and all the changes a new school year brings.

As hectic as it can be, this time of year also is exciting and filled with possibilities. Here are some ways to ease the transition and foster success at school and at home:

1. ESTABLISH A ROUTINE

Start adjusting bedtime and wake-up schedules a few weeks before school begins. This helps your family get used to a new routine and ensures everyone is well-rested and ready to perform their best.

2. GET ORGANIZED

Gather school supplies, organize backpacks and create a dedicated homework space. Having everything in order reduces last-minute stress and helps kids feel prepared.

3. PLAN AHEAD

Mark important dates like school orientations, sports practices and parent-teacher meetings on a calendar and place where everyone can see it. Planning ahead helps everyone stay on top of the schedule and reduces the anxiety of forgetting.

4. COMMUNICATE OPENLY

Talk with your children about their expectations, fears and excitement regarding the new school year. Open communication can alleviate their worries and help you address any issues proactively.

5. PRACTICE SELF-CARE

Ensure that you and your kiddos take time out to relax and unwind. Prioritize activities that reduce stress, such as reading, exercising or spending quality family time together. Self-care is crucial for maintaining a positive mindset any time, but especially during periods of transition.

Having everything in order reduces last-minute stress and helps kids feel prepared.

Deciding to move is a choice that requires lots of consideration and preparation. Whether you’re a renter or a homeowner, there may come a point where staying is not the best path forward. Recognizing the signs that it’s time for a change can help you make informed choices about your living arrangements and enhance your quality of life. Here are some pivotal signs to consider:

SPACE LIMITATIONS

If you frequently find yourself stumbling over clutter or struggling to fit all your possessions (or family members) into your existing space, it could be a sign you need more room. This is particularly relevant if your family is expanding.

FINANCIAL PRESSURE

Are you having trouble covering your living expenses? Rent, mortgage payments and utility bills can be big-budget items for any household, but if your housing-related costs stretch you financially, downsizing or relocating to a more cost-effective area could be a good move.

COMMUTE STRUGGLES

Dealing with a stressful commute can negatively affect your physical and mental health. If you spend hours in traffic every day, consider moving closer to your workplace.

NEIGHBORHOOD TRANSFORMATIONS

Neighborhoods evolve over time, and not all shifts are positive. If safety concerns, rising noise levels or changes in community dynamics detract from your comfort or happiness, it may be time to check out other areas that better suit your needs and preferences.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Got a promotion? A great new job offer? Congratulations! However, these opportunities may require a move to a different city or state. Weigh the potential for career growth against your connection to your location to decide whether moving is worth it.

Time to move?

HERE’S HOW TO TELL

LIFESTYLE CHANGES

As your lifestyle preferences change, so do your home needs. Whether you’re looking for a quieter neighborhood, bustling city life or a closer connection to nature, moving to a place that fits your lifestyle better can make you happier.

HEALTH FACTORS

Your wellbeing depends on things like access to healthcare, fun activities and nature. If your current location doesn’t have what you need for a healthy life, moving to a better spot might be good for you.

Sometimes, you just need a fresh start. Don’t be afraid to contact a real estate professional to learn the current market value of your home. Now may be the perfect time to put that equity to use with a new address.

EDUCATION

When families consider relocating, the quality of schools typically tops their priority list. If you’re not feeling good about the schools nearby, consider moving to a place with better ones. It could make a significant difference for your family.

A new hope for survivors Gulf Coast Family Justice Center

Dream big, start small: That’s the motto guiding the Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence and its partners as they create the Gulf Coast Family Justice Center.

Our in-house design team can help you choose your fabric then design, custom-make, and deliver exceptional personalized products.

A site at 47 Maples Drive in Gulfport is set to be the new home of the Family Justice Center — a multi-agency facility serving victims of interpersonal violence, including intimate partner violence, sexual assault, child abuse, elder or dependent adult abuse and human trafficking. Stacey Riley, CEO of the Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence, says the process got underway in 2023 with help from the Alliance for Hope International, and the Center should open by the end of the summer.

The facility will be the first of its kind in Mississippi, and Riley says what makes it special is that it puts many services and resources in one place.

“An FJC is often referred to as a 'onestop-shop’ where victims of crime can safely receive needed services and actively participate in the justice system,” Riley says. “Centers focus on reducing the number of times victims tell their story and the number of places victims must go for help.”

According to Riley, communities with family justice centers report the elimination of or significant reduction to domestic violence homicides.

AMBITIOUS PLANS

The Harrison County Board of Supervisors has provided space for the Center, and Riley says legal clinic staff and legal advocates are now working there, with plans to add law enforcement, court partners and other social service agencies soon. When the facility opens, it will be available on a walk-in basis Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Initially, the available services will include a centralized intake, referral to GCCFN or partner services, civil legal services, court advocacy and law enforcement assistance.

“Over the next five years, we expect significant expansion of our project,” Riley says — to include the following:

• Full-time counseling services for

adults and children

• Specialized services for children (preschool, experiential therapies, etc.)

• Forensics clinic that will perform sexual assault examinations and forensic examinations for strangulation victims

• Court preparation for survivors who will soon be attending grand jury, divorce/child custody proceedings, and criminal trails

• Strong collaborative law enforcement and specialized prosecutor presence

• Court facility for emergency protection orders

• Onsite service provided by GCCFN community partners (housing, case management, financial assistance, services for pets, onsite childcare, support groups, peer-led support groups, mental health

• Specialized training facility

SURVIVORS’ VOICES NEEDED

The Center also has established a committee, called Voices, which will be composed of people with experience and understanding of domestic violence, sexual assault and/or human trafficking.

“This committee will help guide all services offered by the FJC, as well as GCCFN …,” Riley says. “As survivors, Voices members can offer a unique perspective regarding the community response to domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking.” Those interested in joining Voices are encouraged to send a message to voices@gccfn.org.

Visualizing your dream home

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR BRINGING YOUR VISION TO LIFE

As an interior design professional with years of experience, I’ve had the privilege of helping countless clients turn their dream homes into reality. The first step in any successful interior design project is visualization — the ability to see the final product in your mind’s eye and communicate that vision to your designer. Here are tips and tricks for visualizing your dream home and making it a reality.

PICK YOUR SPECIAL FEATURES

Choose some special features that reflect your personality and interests. Whether it’s a cozy fireplace, a luxurious swimming pool, an outdoor kitchen or a dedicated home office, list the elements that will make your house a home.

SET A REALISTIC BUDGET

It’s important to have a clear understanding of your budget from the beginning of the design process. Work with your designer

DECIDE WHERE YOU WANT TO BE

Where do you want to live? Consider the location of your dream home carefully. Whether you prefer the serenity of the countryside, the bustling energy of a city or a picturesque coastal setting, where you settle is arguably the most important decision of all.

DETERMINE HOW BIG OR SMALL

Think about your home’s size and scale. How many bedrooms and bathrooms do you need? Do you want an open concept living space? How much outdoor space is important to you? Make sure to answer these questions before moving forward.

SETTLE ON AN ARCHITECTURAL STYLE

From modern minimalist to classic colonial, your home’s architectural style sets the stage for its design. Identify the styles that resonate with you and consider how they will fit within your chosen location and lifestyle.

to prioritize your must-haves and identify areas where you can save. Remember that unexpected expenses are inevitable, so it’s wise to include a contingency in your bottom line.

BE OPEN TO COMPROMISE

Sometimes, your dream home may not be possible in its entirety, at least not initially. Be open to making changes and compromising a bit to get what you want within your budget. Flexibility can lead to creative solutions you may not have considered.

CONSIDER FLOW AND FUNCTIONALITY

Visualizing your dream home isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s also about how you will live in the space. Consider your home’s flow and how each room will function. Think about your daily routines and how your home can support them. For example, an open-plan kitchen and living area can be great for entertaining, and a secluded home office can provide a quiet place to work.

PAY ATTENTION TO DETAILS

It’s the small things that really set a home apart. Consider elements like lighting, hardware and finishes. These touches can impact your home’s look and feel. Work with your designer to select details that complement your vision.

PRIORITIZE COMFORT AND PRACTICALITY

While it’s important to create a beautiful space, it’s equally important to ensure your home is comfortable and practical. Choose furniture and materials that are both stylish and durable. Think about storage solutions to keep your home organized and clutter-free.

Combating loneliness and isolation in caregiving

Afriend, who is also a caregiver, texted me one evening to share that she felt like she was missing out on many things due to her new caregiving responsibilities. I immediately called to encourage her because the feelings she described were all too familiar. When she answered the phone, her voice started quavering as tears formed and flowed. I let her get out a good cry as I shared some things that helped me reduce the feelings of loneliness, isolation, and FOMO (fear of missing out).

We must remember that those being cared for also experience loneliness and isolation, perhaps even more severely. Friends and family often stop visiting and communicating because it’s hard to see their loved one in an infirm condition, or perhaps life just gets busy. Whatever the reason, it often yields the same result: loneliness and isolation.

There are a few faithful friends and family members who make an effort to visit my parents, who both live with dementia). For instance, if too much time has gone between visits from my Uncle Ben, daddy asks me, “I wonder what ole’ Ben is up to! I hadn’t heard from that joker in a while!” That’s when I call Uncle Ben or text his daughter. The short phone call and visits from Uncle Ben and Uncle Winnie always lift daddy’s spirits.

AN EPIDEMIC

Tracy Daniel-Hardy’s dad, Lucious “Butch” Daniel

rehabilitation facility stay, I decided to bring him back to our house. While eating dinner, he became engrossed in the movie my husband was watching. He didn’t even challenge me when I suggested that he stay the night.

The engagement and company seemed to decrease daddy’s feelings of loneliness and isolation. To help with momma’s, I spent most of each day with her during the hospital stay and encouraged visits from family and friends.

The journey can be lonely for all involved, but here are some tips that can help:

FOR THE CAREGIVER

• Remember the importance of self-care and be committed to it. Schedule and take a nap with your phone on “Do not disturb.” Order takeout instead of cooking, or let someone bring a meal. Schedule a spa day and don’t feel guilty about it, or go to the coffee shop to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee alone or with a friend.

• Develop and/or engage your care team. Create a schedule for the team to reduce the burden resting on one person; phone a friend or family member who has offered to assist, and allow that person to do so, or alert him or her that you will be unavailable for a designated time.

• Continue membership in professional, civic, community and social organizations and attend some events.

In 2023, the surgeon general issued an advisory on the epidemic of loneliness and isolation. These issues can lead to physical ailments, like obesity, stroke, diabetes and depression, or increase their severity and decrease a person’s longevity. According to the advisory, loneliness and isolation also burden society by increasing Medicare costs and demands on the medical system.

My parents’ loneliness and isolation have become a big concern lately because daddy has been directly telling us about his feelings. Additionally, I’ve been noticing restlessness in both momma and daddy as they’ve been separated due to momma’s hospital stay and subsequent stay in a rehabilitation facility. Each time daddy visited, the excitement was evident in his gait and on his face, as well as the blush on momma’s normally stoic face — especially when he leaned forward to kiss her and tap her on her face.

After the greetings, daddy often shared how lonely he’d been without her. I knew it because during the second night of her hospital stay, I watched him through the camera app walk from room to room looking for her. He also had trouble sleeping while she was away. As I did that night and the next few nights, I either called him to reassure him that momma was fine and that my husband and I were close by, or I went to sit with him a bit.

After taking daddy to visit momma on the first day of her

• Know that some things will happen whether you are there or not. Don’t let the unknown or the “what-ifs” stress you out or keep you from taking respite.

FOR THE CARE RECIPIENT

• Engage in activities that he or she used to enjoy and introduce new ones. Make sure family and friends know that visitors are welcome and when.

• Whenever possible, take him or her to events to socialize.

• Spend time sitting and talking with him or her outside of caregiving responsibilities.

• Ask the care recipient to do something for you to show that he or she is still needed and valued. I sometimes ask daddy to fix something or ask momma for cooking help.

• Encourage him or her to call friends and family.

YOUR AUGUST GARDENING PLAN

Gardening is not as pleasant in the August heat, so during this month, I’m looking for a way to keep myself in a gardening frame of mind. For instance, I’m pondering what I’d like to plant when the sweltering heat subsides, usually mid-October.

Early mornings or late afternoons find me walking the perimeter of my flower beds, noting what survived or performed well this year. Thank goodness many plants provide late-summer blooms to keep our flower beds from looking too bare after the flush of spring and early summer.

DON’T DEADHEAD; LET ANNUALS RESEED

Although my beds are filled with annuals, many of these plants will reseed themselves if flowers are allowed to dry on the stem. Deadheading throughout the summer will encourage a new flush of blooms, but in late summer, I choose to leave blooms to dry. In fall or early spring, I am rewarded with an abundance of “babies” that can be moved to a new location, filling in open areas where a plant may thrive and provide enjoyment next season.

PROPAGATION: GROW NEW PLANTS FROM CUTTINGS

August is also a good month to propagate plants, which means growing a new plant using a parent plant. Many shrubs and herbaceous plants can be successfully propagated now. Some plants will root in

water; others do better in soil.

• Cut stems on a 45-degree angle, 6 to 8 inches long from this year’s growth. Place in a wide-mouth container, changing the water every few days to discourage algae growth. When roots get about one-quarter inch long, move cuttings to a rooting mix or sand.

• If rooting in soil or sand, remove the lower leaves, leaving at least one or two nodes. The nodes are where new roots will emerge. Dip each cutting in water, then in a rooting hormone. Use a pencil to make a hole in the soil; placing the cutting in the hole and gently tamping down soil. Mist cuttings and cover with a top or plastic to help retain moisture.

• Plants that do well propagating include aucuba, boxwood, Chinese evergreen, chlorophytum, coleus, croton, dieffenbachia, dracaena, English ivy, firespike, gardenia, impatiens, philodendron and Swedish ivy.

There are many others I could include in this list, so you may want to try your hand at propagating plants you would especially like to have more of. You might also ask a friend or neighbor for a few cuttings if they are growing a plant you might want.

Fighting a new kind of battle

Our veterans have served our country with honor and bravery, dedicating years of their lives to protecting the freedoms that every American cherishes. After retiring, our veterans hope to enjoy a peaceful life surrounded by family and the community. However, many of our local vets have sustained injuries or have medical conditions that leave them reliant on wheelchairs.

ACCESSIBILITY: AN EVERYDAY STRUGGLE

Despite their unwavering spirit and determination, they find themselves facing a new kind of battle — one that many veterans encounter daily. Their homes often are nonfunctional, built long before accessibility was considered, and almost always ill-equipped to accommodate wheelchairs.

Each day, they struggle to get in and out of their homes. The steps leading to the front door are a formidable barrier, and those in wheelchairs often must rely on neighbors or family members for help. Simple tasks like going to the grocery store or visiting friends become arduous and exhausting. The lack of a wheelchair

ramp not only confines them to their home, but also strips away their independence and dignity.

We know they deserve better — the freedom to live life fully and independently. We are fortunate to have many programs along the Mississippi Gulf Coast to help and support veterans, and we want to grow and continue this support.

The state has funds to build ramps and provide other services for our veterans. When ramps are installed or completed, they stand as a symbol of the community’s love and appreciation. The ramp isn’t just a physical structure; it is a gateway to freedom, independence and a fuller life.

HONORING THEIR SACRIFICES

Each organization that contributes to these efforts serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting veterans — not just with words, but with meaningful actions that honor their sacrifices. Providing wheelchair ramps became a priority, ensuring that no veteran felt trapped or forgotten.

As the seasons change and years pass, the Coast continues to thrive as a community that cherishes its veterans. Supporting those who have served here

and throughout our state is not just about building ramps; it’s about building bridges — bridges to a life of dignity, freedom and honor. It’s about acknowledging their sacrifices and ensuring they receive the respect and care they deserve. By supporting our veterans, we strengthen the very foundation of our communities and our nation.

ADOPT A GRANDPARENT DAY: A CHERISHED TRADITION FOR THE CITIZENS BANK

Adopt a Grandparent Day is personal for Katie Hancock, vice president and branch manager for The Citizens Bank.

Her grandmother was in a nursing home out of state, and the experience made Hancock acutely aware of the loneliness many seniors face without having regular visitors.

“So many residents don’t have family that can visit regularly and can get very lonely” she says. “Now that all of my own grandparents have passed away, it is a way for me to continue to honor their memory.”

For four years, The Citizens Bank has been a dedicated Adopt a Grandparent Day supporter. Hancock explains that loan officer Sheryl Mathieu brought the initiative to the bank’s attention, and it has since grown to become a much-loved tradition for Hancock and her team, who will be participating again on Sept. 14.

The bank first adopted a local nursing home near their St. Martin branch. Over the years, their involvement has grown, focusing on bringing creative and thoughtful gifts to the residents.

“We try to be more creative in the items we purchase for their treasure box so that we can surprise them with items they normally wouldn’t receive,” Hancock says.

The most rewarding part of this initiative for Hancock and her

team is witnessing the residents’ joy and appreciation. The companionship and conversations are just as valued as the gifts themselves. “Seeing the joy on the faces of the residents and how appreciative they are of the little things is incredibly rewarding,” Hancock says.

This year, The Citizens Bank will collect items at each branch for a chosen nursing home. On Adopt a Grandparent Day, they will deliver these items and host an event for the residents, complete with games, trivia, coloring and gift-giving. The bank staff brings their children and grandchildren, adding extra joy for the residents.

Hancock emphasizes the importance of dispelling myths about nursing homes and the elderly. “You realize that they just want to have a conversation about the things that are important to them, like their former careers or grandchildren,” she says. “We find that we have many things in common.”

Hancock encourages others to participate, highlighting the experience’s simplicity and joy.

“Don’t hesitate to participate,” she says. “It is easy and fun, and your efforts are truly appreciated by the residents and staff at the facilities.”

How I Built My Business: PURPLE PEACOCK

My business partner, Dian Mong, and I have a tale that never fails to amuse friends and customers alike.

Our partnership began with a leap of faith, and Dian immediately took charge of what we fondly refer to as “her lane.” One day, she sent me an address to scout a potential location, and upon arrival, I was taken aback. The place was a vast, empty shell — a former machine shop with bare, concrete floors and exposed beams.

But it was there, in that cavernous space, that Purple Peacock LLC was born, with Dian and I at the helm. Defining our roles was crucial in managing the 5,000 square feet before us.

Dian, the visionary, transformed every corner into a captivating display of beauty and utility. Meanwhile, I took on the rest: brand management, marketing, accounting, public relations, writing and even ensuring the air conditioning was up and running.

Our complementary skills — Dian’s boundless creativity and my dualistic nature, blending artistic flair with a knack for numbers — have forged a dynamic duo. Together, we’ve created one of the region’s most unique and enchanting antique-vintage retail shops. At Purple Peacock, we strive to create a world where the past is elegantly interwoven with the present. I focus on the facets of marketing and brand stewardship while Dian curates and designs our breathtaking showroom. When you step into our domain, which was once a humble machine shop, you’ll be transported to a place where history and artistry converge.

In the spirit of camaraderie, we’ve also established a private social media group to foster a community of like-minded businesses. It’s a space where we exchange ideas, seek advice and offer support, always prioritizing collaboration over competition.

Embarking on a business venture is no easy feat, but having a partner who shares your vision makes the journey all the more rewarding. So, find your passion, embrace your “lane” and remember that hard work truly pays off.

Shopping is a common and enjoyable activity, but the line between a healthy interest and an addiction can easily blur. Understanding the different types of shopping addiction can help those who struggle recognize their own patterns and, if necessary, seek help.

1. CREDIT CARD ADDICTION

Credit card addiction refers to a compulsive need to accumulate creditcard debt through excessive shopping. People with this type of shopping addiction often experience a sense of euphoria and temporary relief when making credit card purchases. But over time, the mounting debt can lead to financial distress, anxiety and a cycle of credit dependency.

2. BARGAINHUNTING ADDICTION

Bargain-hunting addiction involves an obsession with finding and acquiring discounted or low-cost items. Those with this addiction constantly seek out yard sales, thrift shops or consignment stores, often spending excessive amounts of time and money on items they may not need. The thrill of getting a bargain can provide a temporary sense of satisfaction, but the compulsion to keep searching for deals can become overwhelming and detrimental.

3. ONLINE SHOPPING ADDICTION

or a distraction from their emotional state. Some call this retail therapy, but is it really? This behavior can lead to guilt, remorse and further emotional turmoil.

5. COLLECTING ADDICTION

Collecting addiction involves an obsessive need to accumulate and hoard items, often driven by a desire to complete a collection or possess rare and unique items. These collections can involve anything from dolls, shoes or art to makeup and highend soaps. People with this addiction may spend excessive amounts of time, energy and money on acquiring, organizing and maintaining their collections. The compulsion to collect can interfere with daily functioning and lead to financial strain.

IDENTIFY AND DEFEAT YOUR MONEY MATTERS shopping addiction

In the era of e-commerce, online shopping addiction has become increasingly common. This addiction involves excessive and compulsive online shopping, often driven by the convenience, accessibility and anonymity that online platforms offer. The easy access of online stores with one-click purchasing fuels the addictive behavior.

4. EMOTIONAL SHOPPING ADDICTION

Emotional shopping addiction is characterized by using shopping as a coping mechanism to deal with negative emotions or distressing life events. Those with this addiction may engage in impulsive shopping sprees when feeling sad, anxious or stressed or while seeking temporary relief

Identifying the type of shopping addiction at play is a crucial step toward overcoming its negative consequences. Recognizing the underlying motivations and triggers can empower someone to seek appropriate support, whether through therapy, counseling or support groups. Developing healthier coping mechanisms, setting financial boundaries and practicing mindful consumption are essential strategies to regain control over our shopping habits. With awareness and intervention, those grappling with shopping addiction can restore their mental, emotional and financial wellbeing.

SEIZING OPPORTUNITY, FUELING GROWTH

How I made the most of the One Million Black Women: Black in Business program

I recently had the privilege of participating in Cohort 5 of One Million Black Women in Business. From my acceptance, I committed to giving OMBW a full “yes.”

OPEN TO LEARNING

As technological advancement was once again shifting my business due to the integration of AI into every software that I use professionally, I welcomed the time to think critically with someone more objective.

OMBW provided that through Sheronde Glover, who served as my business advisor. She critiqued my homework weekly and let me know when my goals weren’t as clear on paper as I thought. Her honesty was an asset. Since the goal was growth, not comfort, I entered the process open to learning. That allowed me to receive.

MAXIMIZING MOMENTS

The learning modules were led by New York University Stern School of Business professors, who encouraged us to rethink the path of our endeavors — which, with solid planning, could become enterprises. I was determined to get everything I could out of this experience while I had access to this stellar slate of teachers. That meant giving the program the time required to do all the assignments and attending sessions, even if that could only be accomplished by sitting in my car with my laptop on the middle console or borrowing an office.

GETTING CLARITY

One of the hardest things for entrepreneurs to do is work on their business while working in their business. Being cognizant of the brevity of this program, I chose to pause my product development and efforts to acquire additional contracts so I could focus on the coursework. The decision gave me clarity.

Now I have an expanded community of support, a monthly accountability group, an 18-month growth plan and a library of tools. If you decide to participate in a program like this, which is designed to help you grow, give it and yourself the benefit of a full “yes.”

tips for grilling 10 like a pro

As owner of The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint in Ocean Springs, Brooke O. Lewis knows a few things about grilling. Fresh from the Memphis in May world championship barbecue contest, where her team was crowned Grand Champion, this seasoned pitmaster has some tips to step up your grilling game:

1. Understanding what type of grill is right for you and your lifestyle will set you up for success. How do you know which one is the best fit? Consider your priorities. Do you value a quick start time? Smoky flavor? The ability to multitask? Knowing your needs and wants will help you narrow down your options.

2. Always have a reliable thermometer. My favorite is the Thermapen ONE from ThermoWorks, which gives readings in one second or less (www.thermoworks.com).

3. To reduce the intimidation of open-fire cooking, such as grilling with charcoal, use the two-zone method. Build your fire off to one side rather than spreading hot coals across the entire grill surface. This method provides a direct (high-heat) cooking zone and an indirect (lowerheat) cooking zone.

4. Layering marinades, rubs, injections, sauces and/or finishing glazes that complement each other will help build a dynamic flavor profile.

5. When grilling with sauces and glazes that have a high sugar content, add these toward the end to prevent your sauce from burning.

6. Allow your protein to rest after removing it from the grill. The resting period allows juices to redistribute, resulting in a juicier, more tender bite throughout. Resting periods will vary depending on the size of the cut: smaller cuts five to 10 minutes, larger cuts like roast 10-20 minutes on average.

7. Always make sure your grill grates are well oiled before adding your food. This will prevent food from sticking.

8. Once your cooker is hot, clean any residue left from the previous cook with a scraper before oiling the grill grates and starting your next cook.

9. If you find yourself without a grill grate scraper/cleaner, loosely ball up a larger piece of tin foil. Use tongs to hold the foil in place, and scrape your grates clean. The foil will form between the grates with pressure and clean off excess particles.

10. Do not let social media intimidate you, and do not try to compare your outcomes with what you see posted. Keep in mind that all the beautiful, perfectly executed food you see on social media wasn’t created overnight and there were many trials, tribulations and failures leading up to those perfectly executed posts.

Ready to put your grilling skills to the test? Try your hand at these delicious grilled mushrooms from Joy Monnerjahn, the owner of The Bayou Belle, which make a great appetizer or meal that will please meat lovers and vegans alike (just switch the butter for your favorite oil)! The recipe makes about eight mushrooms.

INGREDIENTS

• Two sticks of butter

Two tablespoons parsley

• 1 teaspoon thyme

1 tablespoon Slap Ya Mama Cajun seasoning (or your favorite Cajun seasoning)

• ½ tablespoon paprika

½ teaspoon garlic powder

• Eight portabella mushrooms

DIRECTIONS

Melt the butter in a bowl. Mix all the ingredients together and pour into the mushroom cap.  Grill as shown — no need to even flip. This way, the butter melts into the mushrooms, and you keep the great flavor.

Pro tip: I like to keep the heat low on the grill so the mushrooms will slowly cook and keep the flavor of the butter and seasoning. If your grill gets too hot, it can char the mushroom, which you want to avoid.

Grill until tender.
