When I walk to the front of the room May 3 to receive the SBA Mississippi Women in Business Champion Award in Jackson, I’ll be picking it up for Gulf Coast Woman and all of those South Mississippians who work hard to see women in business succeed. One of those hard-working people is Marcia McDowell, director of the South Mississippi Contract Procurement Center. She nominated me for the award, but I honor her right back by saying, “Thanks so much for the thousands of small business people you coach every year. You’re a real winner!” When Dr. Angela Bruni started Gulf Coast Woman 17 years ago, she wasn’t quite sure how it all would turn out, but she did know she wanted to spotlight women and their successes from all across our community. Her vision continues to be bright in every issue of the magazine. Gulf Coast Woman purposefully connects, celebrates and empowers women and the broader South Mississippi region. PORT OF GULFPORT UPDATE
Sky high progress on the horizon by Kimberly K. Aguillard
Jonathan Daniels, Port CEO and executive director, with Dan Johnson, ILA president
On March 18, 2016, the Port of Gulfport staff waited patiently for the first glimpse of their three new ship-to-shore gantry cranes to appear among the fog and rain. Though having the cranes arrive on a much sunnier day would have been nice, the excitement that filled the air will never be forgotten for those that had the opportunity to witness their arrival in person. The arrival of the cranes was a monumental moment for the Port’s $570 million Restoration Project and ushered in a new era for the Port of Gulfport. Once in commission, the cranes will allow the Port’s existing and future tenants to more efficiently service their vessels while also reducing tenant operating costs, which will be a win for all parties involved. In the months leading up to the cranes arriving in Gulfport, the question came up on what exactly a gantry crane was and what did it do? Well, according to the American Association of Port Authorities, the definition of a gantry crane is a track-mounted, shoreside crane utilized in the loading and unloading of break-bulk cargo, containers and heavy lift cargo. In layman’s terms, a very large crane that can handle up to 65 tons or 146,000 pounds! These cranes are a game changer for the Port of Gulfport and their arrival highlights the anticipated completion of the Restoration Project and the beginning of the business development and implementation phases of the project. For those that don’t get to see the cranes up close on a daily basis, the Port will be opening their gates again to the public on Thursday, June 9 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. for their Community Tours. Coast Transit Authority will be providing transportation for the tours and the buses will depart from in front of the Hancock Bank building located at 2510 14th Street in downtown Gulfport. Each tour is expected to last 30 minutes and reservations are not required. For more information about the progress happening at the Port of Gulfport visit www.shipmspa.com or follow on Facebook and Twitter by searching “Port of Gulfport.”

BEAUTY AT EVERY AGE by Elaine Stevens
What is beauty? Is it a joy forever or an ephemeral
quality that Hollywood craves, depending on what’s hot and what’s not? Beauty is dictionary-defined as a “combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or other traits that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight.” What if one is blind, does that mean there is no beauty? Perhaps an ideal of beauty only exists in the mind, not the flesh. Many insist beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, or solely in the heart of the beloved. How does one sustain such beauty? Are we born beautiful or do we become more beautiful with age? There are many products and processes of which one can partake on the path to becoming more beautiful, including philosophical and poetic ones. Coco Chanel said, “Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself.” In GCW’s special Beauty At Every Age edition, you will meet Gulf Coast people who reveal their secrets on feeling and staying beautiful. You will learn their personal definition of beauty, along with tips and information on the latest trends, tips and treatments available from facials to manicures, to body shaping and sculpting, to great hairstyles, even to some man-care for that special male in your life — and much more. Zsa Zsa Gabor once said that “you must suffer in order to be beautiful.” Yes, it takes work and time for the caterpillar to become a butterfly. The regimens are as varied as the colors of the rainbow, and as diverse in concept as the cultures that promote their own perception of beauty. However, the universal truth is as women we know that when we look good on the outside, we feel good on the inside. Beauty matters! It matters so much that Americans are estimated to spend about $62 billion on cosmetics, $65 billion on hair care, and approximately $250 billion on clothing and accessories. That’s close to $400 billion on looking good! This issue is all about discovering beauty products and treatments that will help you be your best YOU yet!

treatment / BLOWOUT
Achieve luxurious locks by Dana Sleger
Blown by Oliv Arés Haus of Glam is Biloxi’s first-ever blow-dry bar. Here, you won’t find cut and color stations, but you will find a one-stop destination with a menu full of glamorous pizzazz to give you a blowout that makes you look and feel beautiful. So, what exactly is a blowout? Well, chances are once you have one, you will be back for another, and another, and so on. “This is not your ordinary blow dry,” says Teri Kang, operations manager at Blown. “From the moment you step into our salon, you’ll notice that we do things a little differently. Starting with a relaxing shampoo and scalp massage, our stylists will determine the best products for your hair’s needs… . Then, using the highest-quality boar bristle brushes and the most technologically advanced blow dryers, our highly trained stylists are able to smooth, volumize, twirl, flip, and create the best blow dry you have ever experienced.” Of course, one of the many perks of a blowout is it beautifully combats the frizz caused by our coastal humidity. Blown’s proprietary blow-dry techniques and specialty hair-care lines are designed for humid climates to ensure that lustrous look year round. Typically, it takes about 45 to 60 minutes to complete depending on length and texture, and a blowout will last at least two days to a full week of voluminous life. You also can add an innovative treatment such as “hair botox” — an ultra-nourishing straightening technology for healthier, smoother and polished hair that lasts up to 12 weeks. Another treatment is called the Volcano, which is the future of deep conditioning. High-tech ionic micro mist steam gently hydrates, replenishes, and rejuvenates the hair. Although blowouts are the signature service, staff

at Blown includes specialists who provide a number of services such as full-service makeup, facials, body treatments, brow shaping, lashes, custom spray tans, and much more. One feature at this one-of-a-kind beauty locale is the Lash Bar. Did you know there is such a thing as “lash perms” — as in a semi-permanent method of lifting the lashes? Think of it this way: You could basically ditch the lash curler for up to two to three months! “Our lash services can meet the demands of every lifestyle — from date night to girls night out to 24/7 glam,” Kang says. “As the old saying goes, ‘the eyes are the window to the soul,’ and you also have to make sure that they’re framed properly. Our brow artists will perfect your arch and frame your face flawlessly!” Julia Olivares, 28, is the founder and CEO of Blown and Oliv Arés Haus of Glam, which sponsors runway shows for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and participates in the industry’s top trade shows. Throughout her years of travel and living all over the country, Olivares curated a list of beauty treatments that are effective, luxurious, and have lasting results. Her journey led to the discovery of hairbrushes that smoothed her unmanageable hair, facials that brought the glow back, and tans that looked naturally sun-kissed. Last year, she brought her industry expertise to the Gulf Coast and opened Blown in Biloxi. “The Gulf Coast has always held a special place in my heart, and I’ve always considered it home,” Olivares says. “I had a vision to start a beauty company specializing in developing the best products and services possible. This vision has already created a luxury collection of makeup brushes and lashes, and I’m now bringing the company’s ideals of creativity, artistry, and luxury into this beauty bar. Blown is a little bit of Beverly Hills on the Coast!”

treatment COOL SCULPTING BEAUTY AT/ EVERY AGE
Cool off and slim down Information provided by Carol Whiting, Aqua Medical Spa | Biloxi Dermatology Solutions With summer on its way and hot days ahead, you may be pulling out that swimsuit, or trying on a brand new one. On the Gulf Coast, we make the mental move from season to season that very day, but for many of us, that can be a day of dread! Why? Well, it’s just easier to cover up those extra pounds we’ve been carrying when we can squeeze into our Spanx or pull on a pair of leggings. But now, it is just too darn hot for that! So, of course, we decide to eat a more healthy diet, start a new walking plan, avoid temptation like the Easter candy discount aisle, and drink lots and lots of water, right? That is moving in the right direction, but sometimes, no matter what we do, we still have stubborn areas of fat that seem to really like going to the beach with us. This is where CoolSculpting can meet our challenge. CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved, revolutionary body-contouring treatment that permanently eliminates fat cells through the process of cooling them to death. This method was discovered by Harvard scientists who found that these cells freeze faster than surrounding tissue. In just one
30
May-June 2016
Graphic submitted by Biloxi Dermatology Solutions
treatment, close to 20 percent of the fat cells in the targeted area are permanently destroyed and then eliminated through the lymphatic system over the course of a few weeks. There are no gimmicks, no diets, no exercises, and best of all, there is very little discomfort and no downtime. In fact, the treatment itself takes only an hour. CoolSculpting is now being used to treat 22 areas of the body where stubborn fat accumulates, including stomach, arms, bra bulge, love handles and thighs. CoolSculpting is priced according
to the size of the individual area of treatment. Not everyone is a candidate, but if you have resistant areas of body fat that won’t seem to move, you may be cleared for this treatment. Along the Gulf Coast, the CoolSculpting technology is offered by select providers such as Aqua Medical Spa in Biloxi. If you would like to learn more, call Aqua Medical Spa and aesthetician, Jessica Le, will provide a free consultation, evaluate your desired areas for treatment, and see if CoolSculpting may be right for you.

treatment / NAILS
Nail it! When it comes to the world of nails, pretty much anything is possible. From low-key pale pink to ultra sheen sparkle queen — if you want it, it can be done. There are so many trends when it comes to shapes, colors, designs, and even products used. If you want a great example of what’s trending in the nail world, look no further than world-famous singer Adele. If you have ever watched her perform, it’s hard to miss those super chic nails. Not only is she known for that signature voice, she is a trendsetter when it comes to the shape-color-design package. For one performance, her acrylic nails donned a color called “Espresso Yourself ” by Red Carpet, which is a sensational mix of taupe, olive green and gray. After sealing it with a matte top coat, the tips were dipped in loose gold glitter flakes with the underside of the nail painted in a metallic rose gold. And all that on top of stiletto nails! What are stiletto nails, you ask? That’s where shape comes into play. Just think about some fabulous stiletto shoes and picture the trademark thin, high and narrow heel. Now for some fun, let’s marry this shape with a cool design. Did you know you can get Louboutin nails? Just like the shoes, this design would feature the iconic, vibrant red on the underside of the nail with a standout color on top — even jet black. And, yes…Adele has done that too! Of course, if you want to order the “Rouge Louboutin” nail lacquer created by Mr. Christian himself for $50 a bottle, go right ahead and have some DIY manicure time. However, if you need a nail connoisseur — and a little pampering — the Gulf Coast has a wide selection of experts who specialize in glamourizing tips and toes. Kim Nguyen, owner of Lola Vie Nail Spa in Gulfport, says the most popular nail shapes trending in her salon include soft oval and the coffin/ballerina shape, which is a tapered almond shape with a flat top that is complemented well with “anything soft or super bold colors.” “Any color from OPI’s New Orleans collection is super popular right now, especially ‘Got Myself into a Jam-balaya,’” Kim says. “It’s flying off the shelf and I’m having to restock it all the time.” OPI describes this color as a “yummy mélange of spice and creamy peach,” and truth be told, any color from
by Dana Sleger
this line is a fantastic fit for spring and summer, and can be found in a number of nail salons. Just check out some of the New Orleans polish names: “Rich Girls & Po-Boys,” “Take a Right on Bourbon,” “Humidi-Tea,” “Crawfishin’ for a Compliment,” “Spare Me a French Quarter,” and “She’s a Bad Muffuletta!” Emma Bain, owner of Red Lily Spa in Ocean Springs, says she is seeing a lot of light colors in her organic salon that specializes in natural nails. “One of the big trends right now is white or very light colors, but you see it range all across the spectrum,” she says. “Someone may want something very nude or a French tip nail, and then you may have someone who wants a neon color for the beach.” Bain says one of the plusses about white polish is it contrasts well against the skin and is a “good color for people who are fair because it makes it look like they have a little color.” Another organic spa on the Coast is Mystic Nail Bar & Organic Spa in Gulfport. Owner Teal Nguyen also sees a nice mix of colors in his salon too, but says a defining trait on color selection is based on his clients’ professions. “Most of the people that come to us are in the military or in the medical field, and with that being said, most of those people in that type of field prefer neutral on the hands and loud on the toes,” Teal says. “On the hands, it’s mostly nude, sheer colors for a clean look, but they express themselves on the toes.” As an organic salon, Mystic Nail Bar offers a variety of organic products for manis and pedis as a means to provide healthier alternatives for nail care. In addition to SNS (Signature Nail System) nail dip, which is “a cross between a gel polish and acrylic,” Teal features an “ecochic luxury” polish line called Adesse that is infused with organic minerals, pigments and essential oils, and is vegan, cruelty free, and doesn’t have a long list of harsh chemicals. Summer is right around the corner. Let your inner color shine on those tips and toes!

BEAUTY AT/EVERY AGE treatment TEETH
So, why is that tooth important? by Dr. L. Randy Buntyn
Well, here we are with flowers blooming and bees buzzing. What a great time of the year on our beautiful Mississippi Gulf Coast! In my last column, we talked a bit about gum disease and how it may (and directly does) affect our overall health. Gum disease is generalized and affects most all of the teeth at the same time. Now, let’s look at single teeth. As adults, we start out with 32 individual teeth. Each tooth has a specific design, size, and location according to the function it is supposed to do in the mouth. While the teeth are individual, they form a system of teeth that should work together for an entire lifetime. As we move into adulthood, dentists often recommend removing 3rd molars, also called wisdom teeth. There can be many reasons for this recommendation from not having enough space to properly care for these teeth (you must floss around them), to the difficulties they cause from being able to bite and chew food comfortably, to the negative effect they may have on the other teeth around them. Generally, these should be removed in the late teenage years or early 20s. Most of the time this is a procedure that is tolerated very well and makes a big difference later on in life. But, what about those other teeth? The ones that may get a cavity, or a crack, and then need to be removed because they just can’t be restored reliably. These teeth take a lot more thought and consideration. You may say, “It’s just a back tooth and you really can’t see it. Why is it
important?” The answer lies in what we said about teeth being a “system.” Just one tooth being lost can truly have a long-lasting effect on the rest of your teeth. I agree that no tooth should be causing pain and discomfort, but you and your dentist should make logical decisions about keeping or removing the offending tooth. When just a single tooth is removed, the remaining teeth must take up the slack, and then have more wear and tear over time. More teeth can then be lost because of extra forces during biting and chewing. There also is the problem that teeth need to be stabilized by the teeth around it in order to minimize movement over time. When a tooth is removed, the teeth next to it (as well as the tooth opposing it in the opposite arch) generally try to move into the space to fill it. This causes the “system” of teeth to break down and not work properly, and this is a very big deal as we travel down the path of life. Typically, in our younger years of 20s and 30s, we may not be affected much by the changes. However, as we age into our 40s and beyond, there can be well-documented changes. At this point, replacing teeth may become much more difficult and expensive. In our 60s, 70s and 80s, missing teeth can have a huge effect on our lives. Not only does our smile age over time (crooked teeth, darkening color, etc.), but our ability to chew food for proper nutrition begins to diminish. This is another area where our overall health is directly related to our dental health. To replace missing teeth, your dentist may recommend different methods such as a cemented bridge, a removable partial denture, or placement of a dental implant. Dental implants have a very good success record, and have proven to be a very reliable tooth replacement. So, next time you are faced with a difficult tooth and whether you should keep it, please carefully consider all of your options. For that matter, have your dentist take a look at all of your teeth with high magnification and very bright lights. The smaller the problem is when it is found, then the easier it is to fix. Remember, your objective is to keep your teeth for your entire life. If you keep them healthy, they will certainly take good care of you! . andy untyn D D o ns ile ulf Coast in cean prin s eneral i plant and cos etic den tistry . or ore infor ation call or visit . ile ulfCoast.co .

This summers’ theme will be minimum vs. maximum or in other words, “Bare vs. All There. Although bare skin or bold red lips are nothing new to the makeup scene, the way you style and apply your makeup this season is the key to its success. To be bare, one must first start with a great skincare routine. Be careful with facial oils this season. They do not pair well with my all-time favorite product, sunscreen! If you apply your sunscreen on top of the facial oil, it will dilute the sunscreen’s effectiveness. Stick with moisturizers that have an SPF and leave the facial oils as your nighttime regimen! Strobing will be the top technique this summer. This constitutes as a “skin first” approach. Hydrated, highlighted and healthy skin is what its all about. This look can be achieved with a translucent highlighting powder applied on all the high points of the face. Or one can easily mix a highlighting cream, such as MAC Strobe Cream, into their moisturizer. Now is the time to put away the contour and focus on fresh skin and flushed cheeks. A barely there sun-kissed glow, paired with diffused golden shadows and freckles are a must this season. Heavy brows will be a thing of the past, or at least in the warmer months ahead. From the runway to
the magazines, we are seeing a huge decline in bold, dark brows. We want to focus on the natural color and apply product that is soft and uncontrolled. Soft eyebrow pencils and matte eye shadows will be great to have on hand. An “all-there” look is as simple as adding a bold color to the bare trend. Whether it’s a bold lipstick or blue eyeliner, the possibilities are endless and welcomed. This is a great time to be yourself, show your personality and have fun with color! Bold lips are nothing new. But what’s exciting is finding new ways to play up your bold lip. The lip texture we want to achieve is a “velvet texture.” Simply apply your matte lipstick and tap a blush or powder right on top for a nice soft layer of velvet. This is also a time to have fun with your bottom eyeliner. Try fun colors and metallics as liner on the bottom lash line. And blue hues are everywhere this season. Whether it was graphic blue eyeliner or diffused blue shadows that encompassed the whole lid, it’s making its way back onto our faces. Experiment with color. And if you always wanted to try blue, try smudging that blue eyeliner on your bottom lash line for a fun and flirty impact. ind out ore a out erlau at erlau akeup.co .
Hey guys, how about a man-icure by Dana Sleger Gentlemen, we have a treat for you! If you’re reading this article right now, it’s probably because your wife or girlfriend — maybe even your mother — kindly passed it your way. You may look at the word “manicure” and cringe at the thought of ever having your nails professionally done so the first step is: Change your perspective and think of “manicure” as “MAN-icure.” (Insert Tim “the Tool Man” Taylor grunt here). Smiling? Hope so. No worries about shiny clear polish, but nail trimming, shaping, some cuticle attention, moisturizing, and a hand/ arm massage may put some plusses in your column. Your special someone might appreciate a softer touch. Should you get a pedicure? Guys, go for it! There are even products like a brown sugar scrub made with Tennessee Whiskey, or an exfoliate made with oatmeal and Guinness Extra Stout. Now, every Gulf Coast nail salon and spa carry different products, but rest assured, there are products tailored just for you. Senses Spa & Salon at IP Casino in Biloxi has a “Sense of Men” package that includes the “Executive Pedicure.” Blue Shell Spa at Island View Casino Resort in Gulfport has a “Just for Him” package that features a therapeutic massage, as well as a gentleman’s facial that addresses special skin care needs like sensitivity and razor burn. Interested in a professional shave next time you get a haircut? Uppercuts Men’s Hair Saloon has purposely created as a “masculine environment.” While waiting for your appointment, enjoy a complimentary beverage of your choice, watch television on the big screens, or play some classic video games. A professional shave at Uppercuts is most definitely a multi-step facial experience. After removing hair off the face with edgers and clippers, shave oil is rubbed into the skin and covered with a hot steam towel. Next step is the application of hot lather and a smooth shave with a straight razor, followed with a refreshing cool towel over the face and post-shave cooling lotion. To all military, police and fire personnel, you receive a $2 discount on any service purchased! “Men really do care about what they look like just as much as women do, and what we do is something more geared to pampering, whether it’s a haircut or a shave,” says Vivian Loper, manager of Uppercuts. “Every man can shave themselves, but they may want to get a professional shave for a special occasion, or to just enjoy the overall experience.”

Be good to your skin and see the benefits by Latisha Lewis Price Warmer weather means brighter sunrays and more attention is needed for your skin. SUNSCREEN One of the most important ways to take care of your skin is to protect it from the sun. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of at least 15. Apply sunscreen generously, and reapply every two hours or more often if you’re swimming or perspiring. When protecting your face from the sun, you can use products that contain sunscreen like good quality foundation primers and moisturizers, all containing broad spectrum sunscreen SPF. Remember to protect your lips as well with a sun care lip protector with a broad spectrum SPF 15. This prevents your lips from burns and fever blisters from the sun.
A healthier smile makes a healthier you you!! We are committed to educating all patients on the importance of preventive dentistry. Services offered include: Tooth Color Bonded Restorations, Crowns, Bridges, Amalgam Restorations, Dentures, Partials, Teeth Whitening, Extractions and more
TREAT YOUR SKIN GENTLY To have healthy skin, get in a routine of cleansing your skin every day. Choose a cleanser suitable for your skin type and the areas you want to target, for example acne, anti-wrinkle, or anti-aging. Cleanse your skin and remove makeup before going to bed even if you are tired — your skin will thank you for it later. It’s very important to use moisturizer suitable for your skin type. If you want to target your eyes, use an eye cream that is suitable for all skin types, improves firmness, brightens, and provides moisture, plus minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. You do not have moisture glands around your eyes, so you will need help with moisturizing in this area as you age. Finally, starting now, get in a routine of cleansing your skin every day and night. You will be complimented on how good you skin looks! rice is an independent eauty consultant ith each her at latishale is ail.co or

Get over those natural hair fears by Brittney Fairley
Do you want to do the BIG CHOP, but you're scared because you’re not really sure how to style your natural hair? Or are you already natural but are contemplating going back to the creamy crack (relaxer) because the natural hairstyles that you like don’t look right on your hair type? All of these are common concerns, but there is an easy answer to your natural black hair woes. Realize it’s all about finding what style works for YOU. I think we are all guilty of looking at natural hair pictures of others and wishing that our hairstyling results would come out like theirs. Well, at least that's what I did. No matter how much I tried the famous natural hairstyle “Bantu knots,” it just didn't look right on me. It seemed like everyone else’s Bantu knot results came out effortlessly and mine looked horrible. One day I made up my mind that enough was enough and I started trying different styles and figured out what works for my hair. I actually found several styles that looked right on me. My go-to hairstyle is a flat twist-out with perm rods. A flat twist-out is basically taking sections of your hair and doing a two-strand twist braided down to your scalp
and rolling the ends with a perm rod. I let my hair air-dry overnight, then I pull the twists apart, fluff and I'm ready to take over the world. Finding a natural hairstyle and technique that works for you may take a little research, but there’s plenty of information available online and many stylists specialize in natural hair. airley is a re ular social edia lo er. ollo her in C and at .insta ra .co its e fairley .youtu e.co its e fairley .t itter.co its e fairley and .face ook. co its e fairley.

Also, look for cruelty-free products because nobody likes to make bunnies cry!

You’ve heard the old saying, “beauty is more than skin deep” — and it’s true. Did you know your body has a built-in “beauty protection” network inside every cell, including your skin, which is your body’s largest organ and is susceptible to both internal and external assaults? You often hear that the skin has two layers — the dermis and epidermis — but actually there are seven: five layers within the epidermis (uppermost layer) and two layers within the dermis (deeper layer). These seven different layers work very hard to protect your delicate tissues from cellular stress due to damaging environmental factors. It is a well-known fact that chronic cellular stress leads to accelerated

damage in all tissues within the body, including your skin, leading to wrinkles, acne, uneven skin tone, and even cancer. While you appreciate the wisdom that comes with age, you certainly don’t mind looking 10
years younger than everyone at your high school reunion. Fortunately, there is new peer-reviewed research in the medical literature describing a more effective and natural approach to caring for your skin, which addresses what goes on inside at the deeper layers of skin so you can once again have glowing, clear, healthy skin on the outside. Your instincts are correct: having healthy, beautiful skin is truly an inside-out process, and this is the focus of the latest skin science. NRF2 TO THE RESCUE: A NATURAL SOLUTION TO “AGING” SKIN Aging of your skin is actually a complicated cycle of cellular breakdown (“apoptosis”) and repair/regeneration — a process that we physicians refer to as “cell renewal.” In the case of your skin, this includes collagen turnover. Nrf2 activation naturally and inexpensively fine tunes this entire process. Nrf2 acts as a “cellular thermostat” and regulates your skin’s response to stress. Numerous studies have shown that both topical and internal activation of the Nrf2 pathway has a wide range of benefits for your skin, including protection against DNA damage from UV radiation (which leads to skin cancers), reduced inflammation, enhanced moisture barrier function, and improved circulation and wound healing. In layman’s terms, Nrf2 protects your skin and restores its youthful characteristics from the inside out. Several herbs and other plants have been shown to have mild Nrf2 activity both as foods and as topical applications. However, certain patented synergistic combinations of natural Nrf2 activators have been proven to have dramatic benefits on the skin (see photos). While Americans spent $12.9 billion dollars in 2015 to create the illusion of younger skin through cosmetic surgery, Nrf2 activation offers the key to naturally younger and healthier skin. 1st Crawfish Fest Queen crowned
This year marks the 24th year of the Mississippi Coast Coliseum Crawfish Music Festival in Biloxi. Although most fairs and festivals celebrate the special event with a pageant, a touch of royalty was missing — that is, until Tori Bishop, an account manager with WXXV25, set out on a mission to add some pageantry pizzazz. When she approached Kendra Simpson, event marketing manager with the Coliseum, about the need for a Crawfish Queen, Simpson loved the idea and the process began. Debra Godber, a local pageant director, soon came on board and partnered with WXXV25 to produce the pageant. Godber has more than 20 years of pageant experience and her son and daughter are the reigning Little Miss and Mr. Magnolia. On April 14, Kaitlyn Orth was crowned as the festival’s first Crawfish Queen. She is a sophomore at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College with a 3.5 GPA, and describes herself as an adventurous person who enjoys the outdoors and celebrating life and encouraging those she loves. “I enjoy uplifting others through my personal blog called Operation C.R.O.W.N.,” Orth says. “I like spending time with my family and friends, and I generally love doing just about anything, especially the most simple things. It doesn’t take much to make me happy because I truly appreciate all of the little things in life; they make me happy!” The pageant had nine contestants ranging in age from 17-23 who were competing for a $1,000 scholarship from Dad’s Super Pawn. Thanks to support from the community and sponsors, the pageant will now be an annual event at the Crawfish Music Festival. Sponsors included Dad’s Super Pawn, Belk, Massage Envy, Gulf Coast Woman, Flowers Forever, Gatlin’s and Papa Johns. May-June 2016 68

Leading women
of the MS Gulf Coast
Lisa Graham Cheli Strumila
MISSISSIPPI TOP CEOS Cheli Strumila, Coast Observer owner and editor, and Lisa F. Graham, president and CEO of Gulf Coast Community Federal Credit Union, were selected as one of Mississippi’s Top CEOs by the Mississippi Business Journal. CEOs were selected based on the growth and success of their companies and their impact on the community. Graham and Strumila were among 36 recipients of this award. STRUMILA: WHAT MOTIVATES ME TO SUCCEED: “On a personal level, I would have to say LIFE! I feel so blessed for every day that God has blessed me with and want to make every day count so that when I leave this world I will have no regrets that I didn’t get a full experience of life that I was given! On a business level, I would say day-to day-challenges! Through life so many tell you that you can’t do something and deep inside I feel it’s my purpose to prove them wrong! We all can do anything we put our minds to! So many times we’re our own worst enemies and let that voice in our head keep us from achieving our highest purpose! I’ve never been afraid of failure as I honestly feel fail or succeed, I can never fail myself if I at least try!” GRAHAM: WHAT MOTIVATES ME TO SUCCEED: “My motivation has never been to succeed but rather to do the right things for the people in my life and to create something meaningful from my work and in doing those things success was the by product.”
Cecelia Shabazz
TOP CREATIVE DIRECTOR Cecelia Shabazz, creative director of The Focus Group, and her team’s work was recognized with 33 awards from the American Advertising Federation Mississippi Gulf Coast Chapter’s 2016 ADDY Awards. SHABAZZ: WHAT MOTIVATES ME TO SUCCEED: “The creative process. I just love it! … I have to say what drives me the most is the void of African-Americans in this industry, especially females. We don’t exist. Where are the little brown girls who spent their summers drawing chalk figures on the sidewalk? Where are the black female designers? Let alone creative directors for advertising agencies. AIGA, the oldest and largest professional membership organization for designers, reports that among graphic designers in the field, 2 percent are black, 4 percent Hispanic/Latino, 6 percent Asian/Pacific Islander, and 2 percent other. Of the 2 percent of African-American designers, less than 0.4 percent are female. How can the field of advertising and graphic design tend to the needs of a country that has one of the most diverse populations of the world when the field is lacking diversity itself? So, I push. I’ll teach a class after a long day, speak at career fairs, write an article, review a portfolio, deal with the stereotype — whatever I can so that little brown girl, wherever she is, will know she is creative, she is an effective leader and she belongs in this industry — just like I do. And I see her.” www.gcwmultimedia.com

CELEBRATING CENTENNIAL Gaynette Cox Flowers Pugh of North Gulfport celebrated her centennial birthday on April 1. She grew up during the Depression on her grandparents’ 280-acre farm in Grove Hill, Ala. She moved to Gulfport at age 20 and married Charles Flowers Sr. The couple had four children and were divorced after 10 years of marriage. Undaunted, she worked to support her family as a maid, seamstress and insurance salesperson. To her credit as a single parent, all four children were college educated through her alliance with the Mennonites. She helped to organize Head Start Centers in Harrison, Stone and Jones counties. Fulfilling a lifetime desire to complete her education, she went to college and earned an associate’s degree from Bishop State Junior College and subsequently a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Alabama. She graduated at the age of 65. TOP PRODUCER Jode’ Braxton Hignight, a Realtor with Cameron Bell Properties, received the Residential Platinum Award from the Gulf Coast Association of Realtors. The Residential Platinum Award is the highest GCAR residential award, reserved for Realtors whose listings or sales result in gross commission income of $125,000 or more in the calendar year. This represents approximately the top 3 percent of real estate professionals in South Mississippi. This was Hignight’s third consecutive Top Producer Award. HIGNIGHT: WHAT MOTIVATES ME TO SUCCEED: “At the end of the day, I am not really motivated by the goal of being ‘successful,’ although I do believe that if you dedicate yourself to a profession you love, success can be the happy by-product of your hard work.”

MRS. GULF COAST Jaimee Dorris, owner of Jaimee Designs Web Studio, LLC, is Mrs. Gulf Coast 2016. She won Mrs. Congeniality, Director’s Choice and Top Ad Sales at the Mrs. Mississippi America Pageant in Corinth. The Mrs. Mississippi Pageant focuses on the beauty and accomplishments of married women. Pageant judges look for contestants who are not only beautiful, but articulate, and well-rounded. DORRIS: WHAT MOTIVATES ME TO SUCCEED: “Fear of not succeeding. I’ve always had large dreams and a high expectation of myself. I know that success is a choice, not a circumstance. So I’d regret it if I got to the end of my life and realized I didn’t fulfill my heart’s desire. Success is the only option.” LEADERSHIP AWARD Velma Johnson was a recipient of the National Association of Federal Education Program Administrators State Leadership Award, representing the state of Mississippi. Wall took path less traveled to top post by Dorothy P. Wilson Shannon Wall is determined. She believes where you start the race doesn’t dictate where you’ll end it. During her career, the former casino exec has learned that hard work would shift her forward. She proved that point with an exclamation point recently when she claimed the title of first female publisher of Sun Herald, a top media company in the region. What most people don’t know about her is that she didn’t graduate from college, but instead polished her resume on the way up. “While I believe college is extremely important in today’s world, it was not in my cards after high school,” says Wall, 45. “However, I believe you can do whatever you put your mind to and should never give up. In every position I have had, I have started out at the very bottom and worked my way up by working extremely hard and proving myself. I was never ‘given’ a position ...; the only thing I was given was a chance and it was up to me to prove myself.” Well said and well done, Mrs. Publisher! Wall shared more about her life and challenges in a recent interview with Gulf Coast Woman. GCW: What will be your responsibilities in your new job? Wall: I will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of all areas of Sun Herald and Velocity. GCW: How long have you worked at the Sun Herald, and what did you do before coming to the Sun Herald? Wall: I have worked at Sun Herald since January 2008 and prior to that, I was in the casino industry, where I had recently worked at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino as the vice president of Advertising and Marketing.
Shannon Wall is the Sun Herald’s new publisher.
who know me know that I am not afraid to get my hands dirty in order to get the job done. GCW: How do you balance a career, spouse and children? Wall: I have an incredible husband who is extremely supportive of me and is my No. 1 fan! My kids have always known how important my career is to me and have always supported me, which has made it much easier. It can be somewhat challenging at times but you just have to be able to take it all in stride and know that at the end of the day it will all work out. GCW: How do you relax, what are you hobbies? Wall: Unfortunately, I have a hard time relaxing, but when I am able to relax, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends.
GCW: What is your vision for the company in 2016? Wall: My vision for 2016 is to continue the digital transformation as well as create an exciting and rewarding work environment where individuals have an opportunity to showcase their talents and help move the company forward. When you think about it, people spend over one-third of their day at work, so my goal is to make it more enjoyable. The world is constantly changing, and we have to change with it.
GCW: Who is your mentor and why? Wall: My mom is my mentor and is a very strong woman who raised my brother, sister and me by working three jobs at a time just to make sure we had the necessities. She was a single mom who never gave up on any of us and always supported us regardless of the situation. She raised us to be thoughtful, kind, respectful and appreciative of everything that came our way and for that, I am forever grateful.
GCW: What is the one thing you really want people to know or understand about who you are? Wall: I am an extremely dedicated person who is committed to the team and the overall success. People
GCW: What motivates you to succeed? Wall: Me! Because I did not finish college, I have always had a desire to prove myself and with hard work and dedication, you can succeed at anything. It hasn’t always been easy but that’s what makes it even more rewarding.

Hold the perfect meeting by Ryan Giles The perfect meeting … no, that’s not an oxymoron. But if you’re like most knowledge workers today, you spend hours of unnecessary time in meetings every week. How do we transform our meetings from huge energy sucks into productivity machines? First, let’s look at why most meetings fail.
WE LIKE TO HEAR OURSELVES TALK In most meetings, we end up talking “about” problems instead of actually solving problems. In one company, staff members talked about a sensitive issue for five years but never solved it! The fix: The meeting leader, and yes, all meetings should have a designated leader, must keep the conversation on point. And staff members shouldn’t
be allowed to digress or discuss ANY additional topic until the current issue is resolved. Bonus tip: Don’t agree to any meeting without an agenda.
WE DON’T TAKE MEETINGS SERIOUSLY How often have you glanced across the conference room table and seen someone playing with their phone, doodling on a notepad, or falling asleep? How about arriving late or leaving early? The fix: Get into a meeting rhythm where department meetings are held weekly at the same day/time. The perfect meeting rhythm is weekly department meetings (90 minutes), monthly all-hands meetings (60-90

minutes), quarterly planning meetings (one day), and annual planning meetings (one to two days). Also, stick to an agenda and get into the habit of actually solving a problem before moving to the next topic. You’ll find meetings much more interesting when you’re accomplishing things. Bonus tip: Buy a timer for your conference-room table.
ONCE THE MEETING IS OVER, NOTHING GETS ACCOMPLISHED You’ve poured your heart and soul into the debate and a decision has finally been reached. However, by the next meeting, nothing has been accomplished. The fix: The last step in resolving

any problem is to notate, in writing, who is responsible for the next action … and what that next action step should be. At the end of each meeting, recap what each person is responsible for accomplishing BEFORE the next meeting.
WE DON’T ARGUE ENOUGH You heard me right. In conference rooms across the country, one thing that is sorely lacking is heated debate. The conference room should be a place where you can go head-to-head with colleagues over any important topic. If your company is run well, and only appropriate staff are invited to each meeting, then everyone should have valuable information to contribute. If you hold back or aren’t candid, you’re robbing the pool of information. As a leader, I want to hear all sides of an argument … especially sides that differ from mine … so I can make the most informed decision possible. Two heads are better than one. The fix: Before an important decision is reached, ask each person in the room if they have anything to add. Remind all in attendance that silence will be seen as agreement. Also, as the leader, watch your emotions. If you jump down someone’s throat when they disagree with you, you’ll never get the benefit of their insight (so why are you paying them to be there?). The leader must keep his/her ego in check. If your meetings suffer from any of the ailments above, try “the fix” to make improvements. We end all of our meetings by asking each staff member to rate the meeting (on a scale of 1-10). When we started this process, our average meeting score was a 4. Now, our average meeting scores are 9.5. Happy meeting!

6 critical facts that retirees must know on Social Security
My great grandfather lived to be 97 years old, and my grandfather, “Hap Rogers,” who sustained an injury at the age of 24 in WWII, lived to be 89. According to the Social Security Administration, a man reaching age 65 in 2015 can expect to live, on average, until 84.3 years of age. A woman turning age 65 in 2015 can expect to live, on average, until 86.6 years of age. About one out of every four 65-year-olds today will live past age 90, and one out of 10 will live past age 95. So there may be a lot of years between your retirement and the end, so it pays to have a good Social Security strategy. In an era of vanishing pensions and volatile markets, Social Security offers government-guaranteed income that isn’t vulnerable to market risk, can’t be outlived, and can provide for your loved ones after your death. The Social Security landscape changed dramatically in 2015 when Congress abolished several advanced claiming strategies that helped retirees increase lifetime income. The new rules make it more important than ever to make informed decisions when incorporating Social Security into your overall financial strategies. 1. YOUR AGE AFFECTS THE BENEFIT YOU WILL RECEIVE The earliest age that you can file for Social Security is 62 (unless you qualify for disability), but you won’t be able to collect your full benefit then. Instead, the SSA reduces those benefits by either 25 percent if your full retirement age (FRA) is 66 or 30 percent if it’s 67. So, if your full monthly benefit at age 66 were $1,000, you’d only receive $750 each month if you started collecting at age 62. That reduction in benefits will be permanent. 2. EVEN UNDER THE NEW SOCIAL SECURITY SYSTEM, IT MAY MAKE FINANCIAL SENSE FOR AT LEAST ONE MEMBER OF A COUPLE TO DELAY CLAIMING BENEFITS UNTIL AGE 70. Many retirees wrestle with the question, “When is the right time to file for benefits?” There is no perfect time to file for benefits, but choosing the right claiming strategy can radically affect how much you can collect over your lifetime. Many Americans are forced to claim early benefits for financial reasons, but, if you can afford it, delaying Social Security benefits could mean collecting significantly more over the course of your life.

3. YOU CAN WORK AND COLLECT SOCIAL SECURITY, BUT IT MIGHT AFFECT YOUR MONTHLY BENEFIT. In both 2015 and 2016, if you are over 62 but younger than your full retirement age, you will lose $1 of your benefit for every $2 you earn over $15,720. Starting with the month you reach full retirement age, you will start receiving benefits with no reduction, even if you keep working. Once you reach your full retirement age, Social Security will recalculate your benefit and give you credit for any benefits that were withheld while you were working. Keep in mind that you must pay Social Security and Medicare taxes as long as you are earning income. 4. SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS ARE TAXABLE. Unfortunately, retirement doesn’t mean retiring your worries about taxes. 5. MARRIED? DON’T FORGET ABOUT SPOUSAL AND SURVIVOR BENEFITS. Married couples need to think about how their Social Security claiming strategies will affect their spouse’s benefits and income in retirement. This issue is especially important when one spouse is significantly older than the other or earned more during a career. If your spouse isn’t eligible for a personal benefit, his or her benefits are based on your personal benefit, which means that the age at which you file for benefits will have a major impact on what he or she is eligible to collect.
6. PAYING ATTENTION TO SOCIAL SECURITY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER UNDER NEW RULES. On Nov. 2, 2015, President Obama signed into law a bipartisan budget deal that affected two strategies that helped retirees increase their lifetime benefits by claiming income now and claiming more income later: file-and-suspend and restricted applications for benefits. No strategy can be right for everyone. Under the new Social Security rules, making informed decisions about when to file is critical to making the most of your benefits. In 2012, S&L Office Supplies in Waveland nearly gave up the ghost; then new owner Chris Cochran infused it with vision, experience and fresh vitality. Cochran had been keeping an eye on S&L, believing it had untapped potential. He didn’t know much about the office supply trade, but he had years of experience as a successful businessman. For the first year, Cochran held a steady course, getting acclimated. He made small changes, like updating the logo. At first, “sole proprietor” was a literal description; he had no employees. Year two, he moved the business to a higher-profile location near the Bay-Waveland line on U.S. 90, and the growth began. Now S&L has four employees and is thriving. Cochran says S&L is just starting to tap its true potential. Right now, most customers come from within a 10-mile radius. In the future, the current location will serve as a hub, with daily deliveries extending that reach to 30 miles, covering Picayune, Slidell and Gulfport. His advantage over internet suppliers and big boxes? Competitive pricing paired with a knowledgeable staff. A key reason for the blossoming print business is the expertise Cochran brings to any project. After graduating college with a degree in advertising and marketing, he
worked several agency jobs before opening his own computer graphics and print management company in Birmingham, Ala. From the mid-80s to 2000, Cochran rode the technology wave. The print business was moving from typesetting and color separations to layout and design options provided by computer programs like PageMaker, Photoshop and Quark. Eventually, rapidly changing technology made many of those processes obsolete. Cochran sold off the company at a good profit. He’d had a good run in the print business, but it was time to move on. It was also time to move. Cochran’s 9-year-old son came to live with him full time in 2003. The pair would often travel to the Coast to visit Cochran’s father, Shelby, who had retired and purchased a cottage in Bay St. Louis in the late 90s. “I thought the beach and the small town atmosphere would be a perfect place for a single father to raise his son,” says Cochran. “When I sold my last business, I never thought I’d go back into printing. But here I am again, really enjoying it. I think the universe has the ability to put you just where you belong, whether you expect it or not.” Cochran thinks of printing as an art form, so it makes sense that he’d find so much satisfaction in the work. His years of experience in layout, design and color save customers time, money, and needless frustration.

Old charm meets modern elegance
W
hen Winfield and Gail Majure spotted a Southern Planters Cottage in Gulfport’s historic old Handsboro area, the decision to buy wasn’t a hard one. The 3,100-square-foot home was built in the late 1800s and is nestled on three acres of wooded property. Although well cared for, the last renovation took place in the 50s and was in desperate need of some modern TLC, but that was nothing Gail couldn’t handle. As an interior designer and owner of Gail Majure Designs, she was up for the challenge of turning the four bedroom / three full bathrooms into the perfect living space for her husband and their two sons, Garrett and Reed Dombrowski.

“My goal when designing the home, as with any home that I design, is to stay true to the architecture and to make it beautiful, as well as a comfortable place to live,” Gail says. “Our family spends most of their time in the kitchen / keeping room area where we love to cook, watch TV and spend time together.” When it comes to favorite spots in the house, the exterior spaces are just as inviting — you can find Gail relaxing on the front porch and find “Win” in his vegetable garden. For the Majures, it truly is home sweet home. “Our favorite feature of the home is its old style character,” Gail says. “Even though it has been remodeled and has all of the modern amenities, it still has the warmth and charm of an old home.”

How to shop for annuals by Dr. Lelia Scott Kelly Garden centers and nurseries are in full swing and loaded with great plants. For quick color and longevity of bloom, nothing beats annuals or bedding plants as they are known in the trade. Follow the tips below to get the biggest bang for your buck. Annuals are purchased because they are fast growing, have tons of blooms or have great colorful foliage, for example, coleus, dusty miller and Persian shield. It is important to select healthy plants that have bushy growth that fills the pot. Foliage should be lush with vivid color without obvious disease spots or insect damage. For the blooming annuals, it is tempting to purchase a plant in flower. But in most cases, this should be avoided if possible. A plant in flower could have been fed a high nitrogen fertilizer to spur rapid growth and development,
88

which can result in a plant that is a heavy feeder. When these plants are transplanted into the garden and their high-maintenance diet is not maintained, they can quickly lose vigor. Look for plants that are just beginning to flower or are in bud. Sometimes plants are flowering because they have been in the pot too long and are too mature and leggy. These should be avoided, or if purchased, should be cut back to encourage densely branched new growth. Examples of these are marigold, red salvia, and celosia. Vacuuming, dusting tips to keep you zooming We are always looking for ways to make our lives a little easier. That’s why “how to” books and “life hack” videos are so popular — they lure you in with provocative captions and titles. Each issue, I give a few hints on how to make life a little easier — call it a “lagniappe.”
VACUUMING: WORK SMARTER, NOT HARDER When vacuuming, the key is not to rush the job, especially if you have shedding pets, small children, or a particularly high pile carpet. • Dust first! • Run the machine over your carpet in all directions (north, south, east and west), not just back and forth. This action agitates the dirt up to the top of the pile. Back and forth just mushes the dirt down to the carpets backing and grinds it in. • Use the attachments. That long “thingie” that looks like a tube is great for reaching baseboards and behind furniture. Use the brush on this attachment for cleaning sturdy structures like windowsills and cabinets. • Sometimes the attachments aren’t quite small enough to fit in some spots, so use a paper towel tube on the end of the extender attachment. You can fold the tube so it’s just the by John D. Folding

right size. • If your beater is getting covered with strings or hair, use a seam ripper to cut through all of that gunk for a quick cleaning. • If you’ve dropped something small on the floor or carpet, rubber band a small piece of panty hose to the extender. This prevents the item from getting sucked into the bag. • Keep your vacuum fresh by empting the cylinder often or changing the bag as the manufacturer requires. If the bag isn’t quite full, vacuum up a tablespoon of powdered cinnamon or baking powder to keep the vacuum and your broom closet smelling fresh.
WANT MORE TIPS? • Slip a pillow case over the blades of a ceiling fan and slide it off keeping the dust out of your face and inside the bag. • Use sticky Velcro strips to keep an area rug from slipping. • To remove pet hair from upholstery, dampen your rubber gloves and rub the cushion or seat back vigorously. The hair will bunch into easily removable clumps. Got questions? Connect with Folding at johnfolding245@ cableone.net or (228) 243-3271. Historic building now home to Bay Emporium story and photo by Ellis Anderson A historic showstopper of a building is now home to Bay Emporium — 13 different shops under one enormous roof — with plans to grow! The grand historic building that is home to Bay Emporium has always been a Bay St. Louis star. Built in 1909 by a fraternal organization called Woodmen of the World, the two-story structure towers above most of the other commercial buildings in Old Town. In the early 1900s, it was the center of town entertainment, offering dances, vaudeville performances and boxing matches. Now, the building has once again taken its place as an entertainment center — this time with shoppers in mind. Thirteen different galleries, boutiques and antique shops are nested in the ground level. Later this year, parts of the upstairs level will be open to shoppers, as renovations continue. Neglected for decades, the building was in poor shape before Hurricane Katrina, which ripped off the roof and poured water into the second floor. The current owners, Doug and Vicki Niolet and Vicki’s mom, Ann Tidwell (also owner of 200 North Beach Restaurant), purchased it just 10 days before the storm. The family team has spent years resurrecting the behemoth, which contains about 10,000 square feet — not counting porches. An “emporium” is defined as a place where all kinds of merchandise can be found, and 112 South Second St. lives up to that name. Vicki’s own gallery Paper Moon is located right inside the main door. The light-filled, cavernous building beckons visitors down a few steps to a lower level or up a few to a mezzanine. Antiques, apparel and accessories, jewelry, home décor, and art are tastefully arranged and offer temptations to all ages. Whether one is shopping or not, the interior structure of the building is worth marveling over, with massive exposed beams at every turn. The front porch rockers invite all comers to sit and watch passersby on Second Street. No one’s ever in a hurry to leave Bay Emporium: the vibe is welcoming and relaxing, as if by crossing the threshold one has stepped back in time. Vicki, who manages the Emporium, is a respected mixed-media artist with a closet full of art awards from across the region. Many of her works reflect the charm and humor of a bygone era, a fanciful world where the May-June 2016 96
building would ring with music and hundreds of dancing feet. She tells of a time when family life centered around happenings there. “People came from New Orleans in droves,” she says. “They either had houses here or would stay in one of the hotels. On Saturdays, they’d go to the beach and fish all day, spend the time with family. But after church on Sunday, they’d come here to watch a play or attend a concert or a pageant before heading back to the city in the evening.” Niolet says that most activities took place on the second floor of the building, which has been closed to the public since Katrina. If things go according to plan, people will be walking up the stairs later this year, rocking on the balcony porch and perusing antiques on the upper level as well. “It’s a huge space, so we’re working our way back slowly,” says Niolet. “Eventually, we’ll have the entire building open again.” Vicki understands that big dreams take time. She laughs when she quotes the ancient poet Rumi, who advised: “Start a huge, foolish project, like Noah… . It makes absolutely no difference what people think of you.” But in Vicki’s case, she has a track record that has garnered her respect in the community. For over two decades, she’s worked in the Old Town Merchants Association. She’s also served on the board of the Arts, Hancock County. In 1997, she and a friend revamped a defunct little event called the Second Saturday Artwalk with no financial or organizational backing. It was an example of what’s now called guerilla marketing. Today, the event is one of the economic drivers of Old Town and the county at large. The convivial, family-oriented art and music event attracts people from around the South, and garners the attention of national media outlets like Southern Living Magazine. The magazine recently named Bay St Louis one of the “Top 50 Places to Be in the South Now.” Bay St. Louis came in at No. 18. “If you’re looking for someone to thank for Bay St. Louis catching the eye of Southern Living, Vicki and her family would be a good place to start,” says Old Town Merchants Association president Janice Guido. “They’ve done so much through the years.”

PARENTING
re t e
red fe er by Rebecca Ritchey
As Olaf from the movie “Frozen” said, “I don’t know why, but I have always loved the idea of summer, and sun, and all things hot…” That is definitely the sentiment of those who love summertime in the South. Whether you enjoy summer outside or inside, there is a lot to do on the Gulf Coast!
OUTSIDE ACTIVITIES One of the many things I love about living here is the many activities available for families with children. You don’t have to look far to find something to do. My children like being outside as much as possible, until it gets too hot or they see a snake! We spend a lot of time at the beaches and splash pads, and last year we were at the water park daily (buy your family water park pass early to get the best rates). On those days we don’t want to leave the house, we like to have water-balloon fights, play on our slip and slide, and run through the sprinkler. INDOOR ACTIVITIES On those days we decide to stay inside (usually after we spot a snake or the heat is blazing hot), we can find activities readily available. My children and I can spend hours at the
library; we join the summer reading program at our local branch of the library. Barnes & Noble often holds a summer reading program, and it also allows your child to earn a free book. If you enjoy going to the movies, and can’t resist the popcorn, local movie theaters have a children’s movie time a couple times a week. A little more active option is bowling, and some bowling alleys have free or discounted summer bowling programs for children. Those times you want to just stay inside at your own home you can build a fort, have movie marathons, or do arts and crafts.
ADVENTURE You can add a little adventure to your summer plans by getting out and discovering trails and parks. Desoto National Forest offers camping, hiking paths and ATV trails. There are plenty of small businesses that offer kayaking, fishing excursions, and scuba lessons for adventure on and in the water! You can also make your own adventure in your own backyard or inside your hallways. Obstacle courses are easy to make with simple household items, and hallways are a great area to make an obstacle course. continued on page 104
Biloxi’s Premier Christian Preschool since 1956
continued from page 103 MAKE MEMORIES As moms, we only have a small amount of time with our children. Take the summer months and make memories — memories your children will look back on and laugh about and enjoy. If you working during the day, be sure to plan some half days off or spread out some of your vacation time to take a day off each day or so during the summer so you can enjoy this time with your family.

Rockin’ and rollin’ in their 50s eet

by Elaine Stevens Unless you are a hermit on one of the Gulf Coast’s barrier islands, you have heard them, seen them, danced to their music, and probably even sang along with them — after a couple of cocktails! Loree Dalgo and Cheri Salvetti are without a doubt two of the most talented and attractive women on the local music scene. They both fell in love with music at age 5. And, would you believe, half a century later, they are still rockin’ the Coast? Age is not a barrier. Talent is their gift. Music is their passion. And, we are the beneficiaries. A NATURAL TALENT Loree Dalgo and her seven siblings have been theater ree al performers since early childhood. It came naturally to the buoyant blonde. Born in Newport Beach, Calif., she was brought up in a house of music with her singing U.S. Marine father and terpsichorean mother. Dalgo’s first audition was with a musical theater group under the direction of actor Buddy Ebsen’s (Jed Clampett on Beverly Hillbillies) then-wife, Nancy. “We also put on shows for the neighbors, who paid to see us in the garage.” Moving to Mississippi in 1974, Dalgo says she took some courses here and there but her theatrical and musical prowess is mostly self-taught. “I worked with bands on the Coast for 10 years in the 70s and 80s. Ironically, my drummer from back then in the band Shiloh, David Whitehead, is my drummer today.” The band today is called Blondefire. Dalgo, a petite blonde who looks much younger than her age, sounds like a cross between Janis Joplin and Melissa Etheridge, though she says she studied the styles of Ronstadt and
Streisand. “I’ve always had a lot of energy, but there’s something about performing that drives and motivates me,” Dalgo says. Dalgo recently celebrated her 60th birthday but she entertains on stage like a millennial — certainly not a senior citizen! “My training in dance and years of running have definitely been beneficial as well. Singing is like breathing to me; it energizes me daily.” Dalgo’s four grown children — Layla, 31; Adam 28; Cody 27; and Savee, 21— also are musically talented, having taken the Dalgo curriculum of dance, music, and mastering instruments. Today Adam and Cody are the ones following in their mother’s footsteps. Dalgo notes the music business has changed dramatically. “It used to be back in the day, we played five or six nights a week; you were at a place all week and that was your living. Nowadays, it’s two nights a week, thanks to the economy,” Dalgo says. It’s no secret the music industry is tough in every way, from the late nights to the smoky gigs. However, Dalgo’s passion persists. When she isn’t rockin’ n rollin’ with Blondefire, she is teaching or directing. Her advice to others pursuing music, “If this is your calling, work hard, practice every day, be strong … and be prepared for criticism along with compliments.” Dalgo says Beyonce sings it best: “I was here, I did, I’ve done Everything that I wanted and it was more than I thought it would be I will leave my mark so everyone will know I was here.” continued on page 106
continued from page 105 CHASING HER DREAM In 1972, a bold sixth-grade student in Syracuse, N.Y., informed her band director that she wanted to play drums. His response, “Are you sure you don’t want to play the flute?” Females simply weren’t drummers, until Karen Carpenter showed the music world it could be done. That’s when Cheri Salvetti, said to herself she could do it, too. The mostly self-taught, slim 56year old blonde beauty — and grandmother — is playing drums consistently in Gulf Coast music venues today more than 40 years later. As part of the upbeat trio called Sicily Swing Band, now playing Sundays afternoons at Mosaic Tapas Restaurant & Bar in Ocean Springs, Salvetti also eri al etti represents other musical talents through her business Island of Rhythm Entertainment. However, the journey of success has been a long and winding road. Intent on becoming the next Julie McCoy of “Loveboat” fame, Salvetti pursued a degree in recreational leadership in college, leaving her musical career in the shadows for a number of years. She met and married her husband when she was 21, thus happily fulfilling her mother’s wished-for fate for her daughter. “My mother used to say to me, ‘What do you think you are going to do when you are 40 years old? Play rock n’ roll?’ ” Salvetti recalls. “She wanted me to have the husband-child-white picket fencelifestyle.” Well, for a decade Salvetti fulfilled her mother’s wishes. The marriage eventually went south — literally — after the couple moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It was the early 90s and she met, heard, and befriended, popular Southern rock and blues artist Lisa Mills. “We became fast friends. Our daughters played together,” she recalls. Ironically, so did Salvetti and Mills — on and off for years, up until Hurricane Katrina in 2005. At 33, Salvetti found herself a single parent of a 3-yearold toddler. “We followed our dreams separately,” she says. “I realized music is my true love.” Salvetti became part of Fixations, a band her mother named. “My mother died in 2001, but she did get to see me at age 40 playing rock n’ roll.” 106
May-June 2016
Over the years, Salvetti’s music transported her around the country, from out West to the Florida Keys, thus opening up a world of musicians, contacts, gigs, and the synchronicities of life. “Never burn bridges because sooner or later you will play with the other musicians you are competing with.” She has played with three of Jimmy Buffet’s band members, and popular Parrot Head frontrunner, James “Sunny Jim” White, who wrote “Blame it on the Rum,” made famous in the film “The Firm” with Tom Cruise. In fact, it was Sunny Jim who poured sunshine into Salvetti’s life post-Katrina. “He asked me to play with him at Meeting of the Minds in Key West, the largest Parrot Head event in the world!” she recalls. “It was a dream come true for me at that time.” The weeklong extravaganza allowed Salvetti to play at different resorts and bars every night. “I was really on cloud 9 when his fan club showed up at a private reception he hosted and I was signing autographs, too — my little twinge of fame.” Versatile in many fields, Salvetti’s talents extend beyond her music. Her successful photography business, Personal Paparazzi, takes her on the road between New Orleans and Destin frequently. Other interests include bodybuilding, where she placed third in a New York state competition in 1984, windsurfing, and even a real estate rental business. Her future will always include music. “I think I will play music for as long as I can … maybe the rest of my life.” Whatever Salvetti chooses among her many other interests as the years progress — photographing beautiful landscapes and wildlife, going on safari, visiting Italy — be assured it will be done with confidence and class. ns n a s readers it ins irati nal tales by Scott Naugle Most of us have a dog story. It may be of a childhood pet, a furry collie at the foot of the bed, a German shepherd chewing the upholstery off the sofa in a post-college apartment, or the poodle who has become a late-life companion. In “The Dogs Buried Over the Bridge,” Rheta Grimsley Johnson walks us through her life, joys, miseries, successes, and epiphanies, by lovingly featuring the dog or dogs in her home at that moment. The dogs are both repository and inspiration for the touchpoints in Johnson’s storied life. Johnson has won numerous awards while reporting for United Press International, the Commercial Appeal (Memphis), the Atlanta Journal Constitution, and a number of other regional newspapers. They include the Ernie Pyle Memorial Award for Human Interest Reporting, the Headliner Award for Commentary, and the American Society of Newspaper Editors’ Distinguished Writing Award for commentary. Syndicated by King Features of New York, her column appears in approximately 50 newspapers nationally. She lives at Fishtrap Hollow, near Iuka, Mississippi, in the Mississippi Hill Country, halfway between Nashville and Memphis. Johnson is also a frequent visitor to Pass Christian. Join Johnson as a starry-eyed newlywed starting a weekly newspaper on Georgia’s exotic St. Simons Island, through stints at various other Southern newspapers, and finally to her writing life in remote and dog-friendly Fishtrap Hollow, Miss. That’s the dateline for her longrunning column and the place Johnson has called home for almost 30 years, despite growing up “a girl of curbs and gutters, not creeks and critters.” Along the way, readers meet Johnson’s eccentric neighbors, her friends, her three husbands, and — best of all — her dogs. She introduces Monster, “a big galoot of a mutt, the variegated color of a hand-knitted sweater a dour aunt might give you for Christmas”; Humphrey, who spent much of one night in an apartment complex “patiently lining stolen shoes up at our back door like a clearance rack at Payless”; Mabel (pronounced MayBelle), the first of the dogs to be buried “over the bridge” in Johnson’s sad little dog cemetery, who was “so beautiful that it never really mattered how much toilet paper she shredded, whose hairbrush she destroyed, where she sat or slept … . Scolding Mabel would have been stomping a rose”; and Pogo and Albert, who taught Rheta that “grief can kill you, whatever your species. It isn’t pretty, and it’s a walk you must take alone.” There are other dogs as well, for hers has been a life that measures its quality in canines.
Johnson claims that she finds it “harder and harder to separate the humans from the dogs. That would be like separating the past from the present, or memory from reality. Certain dogs are so much a part of life with certain people at certain places that I cannot make a distinction. Why bother, anyway? Maybe all we are is an amalgamation of the animals we have loved, the things they have taught us. Certainly, we learn more from them than they do from us.” Our world is a better place for Johnson’s care and connection with beloved canines. Affection and kindness truly are returned in kind. A few weeks ago in early April, a bookstore in Pass Christian hosted a launch event for The Dogs Buried Over the Bridge. A painted portrait of Mabel watched over the gathering. For nearly two hours, Johnson steadily signed books as the line snaked out the door. It was if the community had gone to the dogs, turning out in force through their human keepers, to thank Johnson for her touching remembrance of their four-legged brethren.

“Super” means at a higher level, higher quality and being self- sacrificing, courageous and noble. So many people are looking for a superhero to save them from the stress and pressures of this somewhat chaotic world we live in. You see; Superwoman, super girl and Wonder Woman all were confident in their gifts and their abilities as well as their strengths and weaknesses. They knew exactly who they were and how to dress for success. I believe there’s a superhero in all of us, that keeps us honest and gives us strength and power to achieve. Yes, Superman can fly, outrun trains and stop bullets, but he still has a weakness. His weakness was Kryptonite that made him weak and vulnerable. Don’t we all have kryptonite in our lives, too? Those are the things that weaken us or cause us to question our abilities. The good news is each one of us are given certain talents and abilities by God (Romans 12:6-8, Eph. 4:7-13). Having weaknesses is really not a bad thing as we all have been taught. Being weak in some areas creates a dependency and causes us to rely on God (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). Our weaknesses also reveal a need for teamwork, relationships and each other. Through this alliance we can have maximum impact; together we can make a fully working body. Unlike Superman, we don’t need to go into the phone booth to change into a different character. We can be the real super girls every minute of every day. In order to be a real super hero we cannot have a secret identity, nor hide behind a mask — we must stand up and be genuine by helping others. Being a super hero is not something we do only when the cape and the mask are on. A super girl / superhero has extraordinary, supernatural power, dedicated to fulfilling the mission to protect the world from evil. Ephesians 3:20-21 says, “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be the Glory. “ Allow GOD to activate his power within you. HE will make a spiritual super girl out of you! Killeen is founder of W.O.W. (Women of Wisdom). W.O.W. meets every second Wednesday of the month at noon at the Lyman Community Center in Gulfport.

Victory through adversity
When you are in the storms of life, sometimes your praise becomes weakened. Negative words began to manifest in your mind, and it seems the storm begins to define you. God has promised us in the time of trouble; He shall hide us in His pavilion, in the secret place. He will give you victory in the storm. God has gifted you with praise to connect with Him and to preserve you when you’re facing the most difficult times of life. Here are three ways to maintain victory in the midst of your adversity. GIVE GOD A SACRIFICIAL PRAISE The gift of praise connects you with Him in a deeper way and edifies who He is. He is the creator and there is none like Him. In the storms of life, our praise may become weakened from the burdens, but the greatest blessings come when we reach deep within our spirit and offer up a sacrificial praise. A sacrificial praise is an offertory praise that is difficult to surrender to God when faced with opposition. Hebrews 13:15 says, “… let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise with the fruit of our lips that openly declares his name.” When we offer praise to God, He receives it and, in return, He pours out the blessings. The Lord encourages us to praise Him continually whether life is easy or difficult, as this pleases Him. A woman in the Bible suffered for 12 years with an issue of blood. It seemed like there was no hope for her. She pressed for her miracle because the storm had become so great and she had no other alternative! My friend, you do the same. You must press through the difficult times and praise God to receive victory in every area of your life!
{
He promised to give us a way of escape. Say this, “I will bless the Lord at all times, and His praises shall continue to be in my mouth!” Hallelujah, aren’t you glad we serve a mighty God? THE STORMS OF LIFE DO NOT DEFINE YOU! Although God uses storms to shape us through His power, the storms of life do not define you as a person. You are better than the trial you are enduring. God sees you as blessed, healed and delivered. He sees the end product. You are chosen, of a royal priesthood and a part of a holy nation. You are God’s special possession. When you become aware of this, you will see yourself differently and you will come through the fire as pure gold. God has called you out of the darkness of the storm to make life easier in His light. Know that there is peace available to you during the storm, and a new you will emerge after the storm. You win with Jesus. WATCH YOUR WORDS! Your words shape your life and those around you. What you speak can either call for or hinder the victory that God wants you to experience. Death and life are in the power of the tongue. So, speak victory in your life and you will see victory. Strive to speak what God says about you because your victory literally depends on it. Remember the same resurrecting power that Jesus possessed lies inside of you and you have the authority to call your life in to order according to the will of God. Minister Lana Martin recently shared this message with the Women of Wisdom organization. Reach her at mlana5604@gmail.com.

lessed yrls n rs ast en The Blessed Gyrls Rock Women’s Conference was held April 16 at the Biloxi Civic Center, and a special part of the celebratory event is an awards ceremony to recognize Gulf Coast women who rock and are lights in God’s kingdom. The prestigious Lucimarian Roberts Humanitarian Award was given to Robin Killeen, who is the founder of W.O.W., which stands for Women of Wisdom. It was established on the Gulf Coast in 1999 as a “Christian marketplace ministry” with monthly lunch meetings designed to encourage, energize and empower women through an atmosphere of love and connectivity. Killeen’s professional background includes serving as a regional manager in the staffing agency for 24 years, and has been a part of numerous organizations such as March of Dimes, American Cancer Society and Biloxi Bay Chamber of Commerce. The 2016 Wounded Warrior award recipient is Tammy Madison, a service-connected OIF veteran who served in Iraq and Kuwait, and is currently employed at the Biloxi VAMC OIF/OEF Office. Blessed Gyrls Rock also celebrates the power of God’s love reflected in His daughters — or gems! Winners were selected from four different age categories. Grilled salmon is perfect for summer by Danie Rodriquez The weather has warmed up and it is the time of year for all of the family get-togethers around the grill. It seems that when we pull the grills out, we also pull out the same recipes over and over again. Burgers, chicken and ribs are great for any party, but what if we change it up a bit? We live on the beautiful Gulf Coast and seafood is always available, so why not try something new on the grill the next time you cook out. Grilling fish can be very tricky because it tends to want to stick and fall between the grates. My recipe for grilled cedar plank salmon solves all of the issues of grilling seafood while providing a flavorful, healthy meal that is beautiful to present to family and friends.

by Philip L. Levin, M.D. In a town known for eclectic restaurants and nighttime music, a trio of Long Beach boys has brought their special brand of barbecue to acclaim and delight. Murky Waters Blues N BBQ at 1212 Government St. in Ocean Springs duplicates the delicious flavors and fun times they set up in downtown Gulfport only three years ago with this expansion in the heart of the “City of Discovery.” With their backyard slow cooker, they serve unbelievably tasty brisket, pork, wings and chicken complemented by a choice of more than a dozen beers and a nighttime schedule of local blues players. “After graduating from Ole Miss in 2012, two longtime buddies of mine joined me in opening the first Murky Waters,” says Brandon Atwell, one of the founders and owners. “We all had experience working in my family’s restaurants: Barnaby’s, Bernie’s and Bulls.” In an area known for steaks and seafood, they decided to go with something more basic. In less than a year after graduation, they opened to a great welcome.
“That first week we packed the restaurant with family and friends, and fortunately they liked our food,” Atwell says. Using mostly word of mouth advertising, the location soon became a lunchtime favorite for local businesses. Their dedication was rewarded when Murky Waters was voted the number one barbecue restaurant in the Sun Herald’s “People’s Choice” awards. When it came time to expand, they chose the friendly town of Ocean Springs. “Even though we’re from the Coast, none of us were familiar with this area,” Atwell says. “One day we were driving down Government Street and saw the ‘For Rent’ sign on the door. We called our lender, Gulf Coast Renaissance Corp., and by October 2014, we opened our doors. We’d been open only a week or two when the Peter Anderson Festival brought in so many customers we were almost overwhelmed!” Atwell notes the crowd difference between the two

locations. Gulfport has a steady, reliable weekday business clientele. Ocean Springs rocks in the evenings with dinner diners coming for beer and music. Both restaurants offer a wide selection of microbrews and choices are listed on a menu board complete with alcohol content and state of origin. The choices change weekly. All their meats are smoked onsite in the back of both locations. Their barbecue style is dry rub and customers can add sauces at the table. “Here in Mississippi, barbecue is more about the community and socializing,” Atwell says. “It’s an excuse to get around the table with your family and enjoy good food.” Wednesday night is wing night, and I joined the legions of locals who swear these are the best wings they’ve ever had. There’s typically a two-hour wait, which is understandable given they sell more than 5,000 wings in four hours between the two stores. Unlike most restaurants that deep-fry their wings for seven minutes, Murky Waters smokes theirs for an hour, followed by a quick flash fry to crisp the outside. They offer their wings with 14 choices of sauces such as habanero, garlic Parmesan or sweet Asian. Another local favorite is a dish they call “Burnt ends.” They take a mammoth size 10-pound brisket that Atwell describes as the most fatty, toughest meat you can find. After smoking it for 10 hours, they cut off the lean bottom half and serve that meat as brisket. The residual fat cap is smoked for an additional four hours until the fat looks burnt beyond eating. However, when the rim is removed, the inside is the most tender meat you’ll ever find. “We can’t keep them in stock,” Atwell says. “It’s the first thing people ask for and the first thing to sell out.” Murky Waters entertains with live blues music. Recruiting musicians from across the Coast, local musician/ photographer Neil Ladner lines up the twice-weekly schedule. Ladner also provided the photographs decorating the walls, which are all famous Mississippi blues players. Visit www.murkywatersbbq.com to keep up with the music lineup, check out the menus, and see what beers they have on tap. Drop by either location in Gulfport or Ocean Springs and enjoy some great brews, blues and barbecue.

In 2013, Pink Lotus was born! The Pink Lotus Project is a not-for-profit organization focused on empowering women and girls across the Gulf Coast. Pink Lotus has several initiatives that assist hundreds of women and girls each year. “Cha Cha for the Ta Ta’s Breast Cancer Awareness Line Dance A Thon” has raised more than $5,000 in the last two years for the Memorial Hospital Breast Imaging Fund. This fund allows women who cannot afford the necessary diagnostic exams such as mammograms and ultrasounds to receive the services they need. “Fierce & Fearless – A Vision Board Experience” is a small intimate event that is sponsored to give women the opportunity to discover their vision and learn the skills necessary to stay focused on their goals and to realize their potential to succeed. “Power In Pumps” is a new series of women’s empowerment soirees. This event will put like-minded women in the room with subject-matter experts to help fuel their personal and professional goals. empowerment and educational workshops prior to shopping for a dress. Pink Lotus also supports Girl Power, an afterschool program at North Gulfport 7th and 8th grade. Pink Lotus provides educational workshops to the participants twice a month. We are also proud to announce the launching of The Pink Lotus Leadership Academy. The mission of the academy is to provide leadership skills to girls entering 9th grade. The academy will follow the cohort of girls throughout their high school matriculation and follow a curriculum that will employ them to be outstanding leaders in their schools and communities. Each girl is paired with a mentor to help them succeed. All of the participants will have the opportunity to graduate from the program with a scholarship to a college or university. We are very excited about this initiative and what it will do for girls along the Gulf Coast. I am very excited about what Pink Lotus has done for the community and even more excited about what we have planned in the future. Women and girls are the world’s most underutilized resource. We are dynamic especially in numbers. My goal is for each woman and girl to realize their potential and follow their dreams. Jocelyn Gavin Lane is the CEO/founder of The Pink Lotus Project.
