engaged
However it came–down on one knee, spontaneously in conversation, alone in a favorite place, surrounded by friends and family– your marriage proposal marks the ending of one chapter of your relationship, and it signals the beginning of the next. The whirlwind known as the engagement period provides an opportunity for all of the planning and decisions necessary to make your wedding day everything you hope for it to be. Here are some places to start:
8
S HARE THE NEWS You’ve just experienced the moment you’ve been waiting for, and naturally you want to share it with everyone. And you should! Keep in mind that while social media provides a great way to reach all of your people quickly, it also lacks the personal touch you might want to have in this moment. Consider calling or visiting your closest family and friends before sharing on social media. Sure, it may take a while and require you to keep your updated status under wraps for a day or two, but getting to experience the excited screams, happy tears, and bear hugs will be worth the delay. And you’re sure to still get all of the love on social media, even if the news is a few days old by the time you post “Don’t put it on social media right away. Tell people old school style so you’re not bombarded with ‘Oh my gosh, I saw it on Facebook!’...Then whenever you go out, tell everyone (even strangers), because everyone loves the joy of a new engagement.” - Meghan Armstrong- married 2019
C HERISH (AND DOCUMENT) THE MEMORIES
The engagement period can be such a sweet time for couples, so be sure to take the time to enjoy it. Consider having an engagement party with your family and friends. Take a weekend to get away with your fiance to spend a little time with just the two of you. And whether you choose to have formal engagement pictures made or you just take a lot of selfies, be sure to document the time together. Years into your marriage, you’ll be thankful you did.
“His grandmother snapped a picture of us the night we got engaged. We went over to her house to tell her the news, and it was her first response. I treasure this picture because ten years later, I can see nothing but joy…The following weekend, we got a group of friends together and went to Bourbon street to celebrate. It wasn’t an official engagement party. Just a fun “FINALLY!” moment.” -Katheryn White, married 2013
D ETERMINE YOUR TIMELINE Obviously, setting the wedding date will be one of the first decisions you and your fiance make, and doing so will help you gauge when you need to throw yourself fully into the wedding planning process. For short engagements, planning might need to begin right away, but for longer engagements, you may want to take some time to just enjoy being engaged. “I immediately jumped into planning and quickly felt overwhelmed. I wish I had taken a couple weeks simply to ‘be engaged’ before starting to plan everything…I had a year and a half engagement, and I’d say I really didn’t need to start planning until around the 10 month mark.” - Jessilyn Griffith, married 2020
S ET EXPECTATIONS AND DEVELOP A MUTUAL VISION FOR YOUR DAY
The perfect wedding may look different for you than it does for your partner. No doubt you will have many opportunities to practice compromising, conceding, and communicating-great skills to carry into your marriage. By beginning the planning process with an honest discussion of what you both expect, you can hopefully curtail any explosive differences of opinion. Start with the non-negotiables, and work backwards from there. Also be sure to talk about the wedding budget- that might require including parents if they are footing the bill for the wedding.
C ONSIDER HAVING A WEDDING COORDINATOR
While many people decide to go at wedding planning alone, wedding coordinators bring valuable skills and resources to the process. Having someone outside of the process to direct, mediate, and advise can make the difference between a stressful experience and a calm, enjoyable day.
“Find a wedding planner/coordinator! I wouldn’t have enjoyed my day as much without mine…She was the buffer between me and any problems that came up on my wedding day and it let me relax and enjoy my day.” Brittany Strebeck, married 2017
C HOOSE THE VENUE Start looking immediately for your perfect place to say “I do,” and make a decision as soon as possible. Even if you’re planning to have a long engagement, many venues must be booked months in advance, so time is of the essence. P REPARE YOURSELF FOR UPS AND DOWNS
Wedding planning, engagement, and marriage require mental and emotional fortitude. There will be wonderful moments that you will cherish the rest of your life. And there will be equally difficult times that you may hope you can forget. Remember that it is okay if (and when) the warm fuzzies wear off and the nitty gritty of reality gets you down. Find a way to recenter yourself and your relationship. Lean on your vision that you set early on, but be willing to let go of the aspects that you established as negotiables.
“Find a statement that keeps you grounded, so when things go wrong during planning or on the day of, it calms you. Mine was ‘at the end of the day, we’ll still be married.’ It reminded me where my focus should be and gave me permission to let go of some of the stress I was holding over little details about the planning aspect.” Dee Dee Brooks, married 2015
“I had no desire to take it slow, didn’t want to prolong the planning, wanted to get it over with! We did 6 months from engaged to married, and I’m so glad we kept that part short.”- Heather Murray, married 2016 HAPPILY EVER AFTER BEGINS HERE...

Honoring
LO ST LOVE D O N ES
W
edding days abound with family, friends, laughter, and love, but they can be tinged with sadness when important loved ones are not able to celebrate with us. Many brides and grooms seek to honor family members and friends who have passed away, allowing them to be a part of the ceremony in spirit. One popular way to acknowledge deceased loved ones is to include framed pictures of them at the ceremony, at the reception, or both. Many couples utilize the table with the guest sign-in book or a special table at the front entrance to the reception. Variations of this tribute include place cards with the loved ones’ names and candles lit in their memories. In the actual ceremony, couples may choose to leave empty seats in the places of honor reserved for loved ones. Brooke Photo by Briggs, married in Deanna Hunt 2012, said, “At our Photography wedding, we had two seats saved for (the groom’s) mother and father. We had some of my wedding flowers in both chairs. We took wedding photos together looking down at both chairs as well. It was special.” The flower arrangements in ceremonies provide great opportunities to add momentos in honor of those who can not be present in person. Brides often carry pictures or precious items in their bouquets to have a piece of their loved ones with them as they walk down the aisle. At her wedding in October of 2021, Kelsey Holston carried a charm with pictures of the four family members whom she had lost in previous years. Her husband Connor had just lost his mother the month before their wedding. When he walked down the aisle with his father and brothers at the beginning of the ceremony, he brought a small bouquet with him and placed it in the chair reserved for his mother. When she married in 2017, Skye Roussel carried
a broach that belonged to her great grandmother in her bouquet, and her husband Matthew wore a locket under his boutonniere to honor his mother, whom he had lost months before the wedding. The Roussels also decorated the seat reserved for his mother with purple flowers. “Purple was her favorite color and the color for pancreatic cancer,” Skye explained. Amanda Pidgeon used her bridesmaid bouquets to include her best friend whom Amanda had lost a few years before her marriage in 2013. “My best friend Robin died in a car accident a few years before I was

married. She would have undoubtedly been my maid of honor, so I had each of my five bridesmaids carry one letter of her name wrapped around the stems of their bouquets, so when they stood facing my guests, her name would be there.” Acknowledgements can also be very subtle and private, a secret shared between the bride, groom, and their loved ones. Before her wedding in 2016, Victoria Gosselin was surprised with a piece of her grandfather’s shirt which her mother had sewn into the inside of Victoria’s dress. Christy Elias wore her grandmother’s blue rosary pinned to the inside of her dress; it served as both her “something blue” and as a way to honor her grandmother. Kelsey Arde chose to honor her lost loved ones in her 2021 wedding at both the ceremony and in an especially unique way at the reception. “In the program we dedicated the flowers on display to our lost loved ones. (We) also had family include their grandparents’ recipes into their food items at the reception and put their picture/name next to the dish.” While losses can be so difficult on such a joyous day, paying homage to those lost too soon can bring tremendous comfort, and each tribute can be as unique and special as the person whom it honors.

love story
Brittany & Stephen By Kelsie Dove
Photography by Jessie Newton Photography
12
Couple embarks on lifelong adventure Brittany Wilem Kahler said that from her first date with Stephen Kahler in November of 2019, she had an undeniable feeling that she was going to marry him. “From the moment Stephen and I went on our first date, there was an instant connection.” The couple met through online dating, even though they both grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. In fact, their brothers were friends in high school, but Brittany said that she and Stephen were never around at the same time they were hanging out. As fate would have it, they started officially dating on a “Bachelorette Monday” when Stephen came to Brittany’s house, cooked her dinner, and presented her with a rose to ask her to be his girlfriend. Later that year, Stephen and Brittany celebrated his birthday at a cabin in Gatlinburg, TN. Stephen planned a hike that was supposed to end at a big waterfall, and Brittany said they expected it to be a fairly easy mile and a half. As it turns out, they were unprepared for the elevation and the full distance, but after passing three other waterfalls and almost giving up from exhaustion, they made it to their destination. Stephen suggested a picture, after which Brittany heard Stephen say, “So what do you think about marrying me?” She turned to find him on one knee, holding out a gorgeous engagement ring. Of course, Brittany said yes, but it was not until later that she found out Stephen had said a whole speech which she had not heard because the waterfall was too
loud. Brittany and Stephen were married in October of 2021 at the Chapel at Centennial Plaza. Brittany said about 130 people attended the wedding, and Centennial Plaza provided the perfect venue for the laid back but classy feeling they wanted. “We had the absolute best day ever,” Brittany said. The bride and groom wrote letters to one another to be read on the day of their wedding, and the couple also wrote their own vows. “Both of those are things we will frame and treasure for a long time,” Brittany said. While they decided against a bride and groom “first look” before the ceremony, Brittany did share a first look with her father. Brittany said, “My dad and I are very close, so doing a first look with him was one of my favorite moments of the day.” Because she and Stephen waited to see one another until she was walking down the aisle, Brittany also treasures that memory. “Seeing him tear up as I walked down the aisle is another really special moment that I love thinking back on and seeing the pictures of.” During the ceremony, Brittany had her grandfather’s World War II medals and both of her grandparents’ wedding rings. Stephen’s mother had passed away from 13

breast cancer a few years before their wedding, so to honor her memory, the First Baptist Church of Gulfport choir sang “Amazing Grace” at the wedding. One of Stephen’s fondest memories of his mother was listening to her sing in the choir on Sundays, so that was a particularly special moment for him during the ceremony. Today, the Kahlers still live in Gulfport where Stephen works for Turan Foley Chevrolet and Brittany owns and operates three family businesses with her dad. Brittany said that while she and Stephen are very different, they balance one another well. They both share a strong sense of adventure and a deep love for people. Brittany said, “He’s my best friend, adventure buddy, sounding board, and honestly, the best part of me.”

Top 12 Rings
Well, it’s that time of the year again to round up the hottest bridal trends for 2022. Many are a continuation from 2021 but some new trends have emerged as well. Read below for the latest and greatest!
1. NEW SOLITAIRES
3. INTRICATE GALLERIES
Sure they’ve dominated for the past three years, and there are many benefits to them. However, the downside is having a ring that looks like what everyone else has. But actually, solitaires need not be boring. Interesting baskets and a unique under-gallery can elevate a solitaire from simple to stunning. A row of diamonds at the base of the head or a filigree basket gives your solitaire a one-of-a-kind look that stands out from the rest.
Speaking of your side profile, intricate galleries are a great way to add a unique touch to your engagement ring. While classic engagement rings are certainly having a moment, those of us who appreciate standout details would love an interesting gallery which is the area that can be viewed when looking at the underside of your engagement ring. Beautiful florals, a diamond-encrusted arch, and filigree swirls are just a few examples of the hidden surprises you’ll find.
2. HIDDEN HALOS
Step aside, Halo! Your more modest cousin, the Hidden Halo, has come on the scene and is dominating the halo trend. Delicately wrapping underneath your center stone, hidden halos add a nice little touch of bling to elevate your side profile.
4. THREE-STONE ENGAGEMENT RINGS
Thanks to Megan Markle, the threestone trend continues to entice new brides everywhere. Side stones need not be boring as fun shapes such as trillions, pears, trapezoids, and baguettes give your ring a unique flair. Oh, and don’t forget the whole Friendship, Fidelity, and Love bonus.

6. ARCHITECTURAL STUNNERS
Rings inspired by architecture are a whole art form of their own. Bypass shanks, crisscrossing bands, and wraparound prongs are details that make rings fitting artwork to display in the best museums.
5. FLORAL DETAILS
Love is in full bloom year-round, so why not have an engagement ring that incorporates the romantic details from nature such as flowers, vines, and leaves? A floral halo, gallery, or shank adds a delicate and feminine flair.
7. CHEVRON STYLINGS
The V-silhouette has gained some serious momentum, and ladies from near and far are loving this daring new look. For those who appreciate geometry and crave a unique style, this ring design is for you.
8. EAST WEST
Elongated center stones such as the oval, marquise, and emerald don’t have to follow the usual rules. Flip them horizontally and you have a unique look that redefines engagement.
9. THREE STONE CLUSTER RINGS
The traditional three-stone is never out of style, and the new three-stone cluster represents mini expressions of everyday love. Fancy stones like pears mixed with rounds make for some serious side interest.
11. SINGLE-PRONG ENGAGEMENT RING BANDS
Sharing is caring and diamonds are no exception. Settings that incorporate stones that share a single prong have a dainty and feminine feel that is becoming highly coveted not only in engagement rings but in wedding and anniversary bands as well. Bonus points for stacking!
10. ALTERNATIVE ENGAGEMENT RINGS
Who said diamonds are the only choice? We can have more than one best friend, right? Meet your new “something blue.” Aquamarine engagements are not just for March birthdays. They’re a great choice for those who appreciate the calming and tranquil effect of all things blue.
12. YELLOW GOLD
An oldie but goodie and very much on the rise once again, yellow gold is the new black. This honey hue is flattering on all skin tones as well as with any outfit. And isn’t yellow gold what we think of when we think of gold at all? Your grandma will approve, trust us. HAPPILY EVER AFTER BEGINS HERE...

love story
DeAnna & Jeren By Kelsie Dove
Photography by Bluewaters Photography
64
Newlyweds open door to new life chapter DeAnna Delancey and Jeren Ferguson met in 2017 at the hardware store called the Vancleave Old Place, owned by Jeren’s dad Quinn. She was seeking a change of scenery from her previous job at a local daycare, and the hardware store had a job opening. Her first day on the job, DeAnna met Jeren when he almost hit her with a door. “As we entered the big wooden door that opened up into the back of the store, Jeren was walking out of it. He had something in his arms, so he used his foot to kick the door open. When he realized he nearly hit us with it he was surprised and just blurted out ‘welcome to the party,’ a term we still use regularly to this day. DeAnna and Jeren did not start a romantic relationship immediately. Instead they developed a close friendship over the course of two years, which they maintained even after Jeren left the hardware store to become a full time farmer. “We both knew that there was something special about each other,” DeAnna explained. In December of 2018, they began dating, and after a brief time apart in 2019, they reconnected in May of 2020. DeAnna said that since that time, they have never looked back. During a store remodel, the door which provided their first introduction was taken down. However, Jeren saved it, and he used it as the backdrop when he proposed to DeAnna. “He picked out a spot under the barn at our farm, and he set the door up with flowers all around it. While most people may not have understood, we both knew that
the very door he opened and found me standing in was now a symbol of us opening the door into the next chapter of our lives.” DeAnna and Jeren were married on May 15, 2021 at First Jesus Name Church in Bendale, MS. DeAnna said that much of their wedding day is a blur for her, but she clearly remembers the moment she made it down the aisle to Jeren. “It seemed like a burden had been lifted. All of the stress and anxiety that came with preparing for such a momentous day was gone.” Another distinct moment for the couple came at the end of the reception when they went outside to take pictures in the sunset. “As we walked away from all of our friends and family we both cried thinking that so many people had come out to celebrate with us.” Two important family members were not able to celebrate with them in person; both DeAnna’s and Jeren’s grandfathers had both passed away before their wedding. To honor them, DeAnna wore a locket with her grandfather’s picture in it, and the minister officiated the wedding with the Bible that belonged to Jeren’s grandfather. Even though their grandfathers could not be there in person, DeAnna and Jeren made sure they were there in spirit. 65
love story
The newlyweds spent their honeymoon in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and they now own and operate a commercial chicken farm in Greene County where they also raise cattle and have a growing row crop operation. DeAnna has suffered from PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome) since she was a teenager, and the couple was afraid they might not be able to have children. However, shortly after returning from their honeymoon, the couple found out DeAnna was pregnant. “When they estimated our due date it was exactly 40 weeks from our wedding day. We were so grateful that the Lord saw fit for us to become parents so soon when the odds were against us.”

love story
Bridgette & Alfred By Kelsie Dove
142
Photography by Courtney L. May Photography
It's a perfect fit when opposites attract Bridgette Kennedy and Alfred Louis Tait, Jr. grew up just down the street from one another in Moss Point, MS. However, they never talked or spent any time together as children. Alfred moved to Atlanta and spent 30 years there before returning to Moss Point, where he and Bridgette saw one another in passing at a funeral. Later, Alfred sent Bridgette a message that read simply, “Hey sis!” and Bridgette responded to him without hesitation. After hours of messaging, Alfred admitted that he had a huge crush on Bridgette. Over the course of the next two months, Bridgette gave Alfred her phone number one digit per week: “Talk about playing hard to get! I was making sure he was capable of pursuing me,” Bridgette said. Alfred’s and Bridgette’s relationship thrives despite the fact that they are polar opposites of one another. “We don’t like a lot of the same things. He can walk into a room and disappear from being shy, and I walk in and circle the room twice. He’s super quiet, but people have asked me to do stand up comedy. He gets up and quietly moves through the house, and I wake up with at least 25 questions already on my brain. He is a die hard Atlanta Falcons fan, and of course I’m a New Orleans Saints fan…He’s for Georgia, and I’m for Alabama. We pride ourselves on being different. We have always said that we aren’t perfect, but we fit perfectly together. We make our differences work.” Alfred proposed on a stormy May evening in Bridgette’s house, with all of their family present. Bridgette’s sister had asked her to run errands that evening, and despite the poor weather, Bridgette had agreed. But after a mysterious phone call, Bridgette’s sister returned to the house. While
she noticed that there were many cars in the driveway, Bridgette was not surprised, thinking that her mom was still receiving visitors due to the recent death of Bridgette’s father. Bridgette said that when she entered the house, it was filled with her dad’s sisters and Alfred’s mother. However, this was not unusual because Bridgette’s and Alfred’s families often spent time together. “I walked in totally oblivious to what was going on,” said Bridgette. Alfred began his proposal in front of everyone, sharing his deep love for Bridgette before he asked her to do him the honor of becoming his wife. Bridgette said, “I’m not certain but I think I screamed! There I was standing with my hair in a messy bun, a denim jacket and rain boots. I looked like a mess, but I didn’t care. I was ENGAGED!” However, after the first wave of excitement, Bridgette became concerned about how their engagement pictures would look. She asked Alfred if they could redo the proposal after she changed clothes, but he refused, saying it wouldn’t be authentic. As a truly Southern woman, Bridgette wanted a “lavish wedding with all the bells and whistles.” However, Covid-19 shifted their perspective. Bridgette explained that she and Alfred focused on the union and the safety of their family and friends rather than the details of a big wedding. “There were about 30 people in attendance. We were going for old Southern charm in the summertime. You know, where we have fine crystal and mason jars incorporated into the decor. It was fancy enough, but not too much.” 143
love story
As their venue, they chose Brown’s Manor, the home of Bishop John Eric and Carmen Brown. The home was built in 1890 and features a plantation style front porch with a beautiful view of Beardslee Lake. Bridgette said that they set up seating under a huge oak tree outside and followed CDC guidelines by placing chairs six feet apart. “God gave us the gift of nature instead of a huge venue. We had foliage everywhere and a beautiful blue sky as if it was on a canvas. Although we couldn’t hug and kiss or take pictures as tradition would have it, we still felt the love there on that porch.” Bridgette’s arrival to the venue was tinged with sadness as she thought of her father’s recent death and imagined him walking her down the aisle. Bridgette took comfort in the fact that her father would have a front row seat in Heaven, but she still felt his loss keenly. At that moment, her father’s baby sister appeared at the car window and said, “You ready, baby girl? Let’s go get you married.” Bridgette said, “I knew right then that my Dad just showed up.” As both of her aunts walked her down the aisle to her sweetheart, Bridgette mouthed to Alfred “Come and get me.” He mouthed back, “I can’t. The Pastor said not yet.” Bridgette explained, “I began my job of bossing him around early.” Bridgette said that the most unique and special aspect 144
of their wedding was the blending of their two families, physical and spiritual. “Both of our pastors gained children. We honor and respect them so much, and our day would not have been what it was without both ‘parents’ being there.” Additionally, their grandmothers, the late Isabelle Norvell and the late Edna Flowers, were close friends. Bridgette said that she can remember coming home from school and seeing them both on the front porch, laughing and enjoying one another’s company, so it was significant that their wedding took place on a porch. “I would like to think that on our day, they were standing on that porch with their grandchildren, smiling and their chests swollen with pride.” Because they were married in the time of Covid, Bridgette and Alfred did not have a chance to go on an official honeymoon. Instead, they went to their new home, which neither of them lived in before they were married, and shared a picnic basket of food while sitting on their bed. Bridgette said, “We got up the next morning and went to church. It doesn’t get any more Southern than that.” Bridgette and Alfred now live in Pascagoula, MS, where Bridgette says each day, they strive to love one another 100% more than they did the day before, and they have fun doing it.

Florals
COLOR, COLOR, COLOR! Color is making its way back onto the wedding floral scene. Brides are embracing vibrant color palettes and unique color pairings that reflect their excitement for their big day. PANTONE PEEKING THROUGH
Photo by Martha Whitney Butler Cake: Whipped, LLC.
The Pantone Color of the Year for 2022 is “Very Peri” [HEX #6667AB] - a very vibrant purple. While we sometimes see Pantone influence our bridal trends, this year it has reigned supreme with many brides asking for whites with a pop of lavender, lilac, and other shades of purple.
DOWN TO EARTH
The dried floral trend is here to stay, and it is showing up with even more variations. We are seeing dried florals paired with muted earth tones as a nod to the end of summer and beginning of fall. Flowers always look better when they follow the seasons in which they grow. When planning your event, remember that out-of-season blooms can be pricey.
COTTAGECORE
Don’t be surprised to see this style popping up on your feed this year. Bringing the outside in, these brides are going for a romantic, bucolic look that incorporates fresh and dried elements, mixed floral prints, and layers of texture. Lovely cones full of dried lavender for guests to toss at the send-off are a favorite from this trend.
ALTERNATIVE BOUQUETS
Unique and eclectic bouquets are a perfect statement piece for both bride and bridal party. If you’re ready to be bold and different, this is a trend you’ll want to embrace. These can be easily incorporated into the reception décor following the ceremony.

BRIGHT AND BOLD
While soft pastels and neutral palettes will always have a place in wedding decor, Bright and Bold is in! Brides are opting for deeper hues such as bright pinks, corals, yellows, and citrus tones.
TEXTURE
Texture always adds interest to a floral design, but this year couples are choosing unique textures found in preserved, bleached, and dried flowers and foliage. Lush greenery is taking a back seat to bleached and tinted greenery and flowers.
ORGANIC SHAPES
If the past two years have taught us anything, it is to be fluid. Loose, natural designs have taken the place of traditional, styled arrangements of the past. Flowers do not grow symmetrically in nature, and brides are loving the idea of asymmetry in their floral decor.
CENTERPIECES WITH VARIETY
Eclectic groupings of flowers and various candles are definitely in. Low compote designs paired with a few bud vases, taper candles, and votives give a table that full, lux feel without eating up too much of your budget. Rachel Bond Owner Pine Hills Floral Designs 12 years in business

Wedding Planning checklist
10 - 12 MONTHS This timeframe is the most critical when it comes to planning your wedding. From a practical perspective if you are not an organized person, you should immediately hire a planner or a consultant to help guide you through the process. Many planners on the Coast also do fullservice design so you can have your cake and eat it too by telling the designer what you want and letting them assist you with all of the details. In some cases, a caterer or reception venue coordinator can help you with some details (linen choices, rental items, room layouts or seating plans). But generally, you want your chosen vendors to focus on what they are good at. These are the items you should deal with immediately because in most cases, there are limited options depending on the size of your wedding. During this time period you should: Book your ceremony and reception venues. Select and inform your attendants. Begin developing your budget. Start your guest list. Interview and book the following: • Planner • Band/DJ • Caterer • Photographer • Videographer • Officiant
162
GULFCOASTWEDDINGSMAGAZINE.COM
7 - 10 MONTHS Purchase your dress. S elect your wedding party’s attire. Dress availability and alterations can take up to six months, so start this item as soon as possible. Have your guys fitted for their tuxedos as soon as possible as well. S et up your wedding website, hashtag and handles. R egister at a minimum of three major retailers with online offerings and at least one local gift registry store. P lan for your out-of-town guests. Reserve a block of hotel rooms at several different hotels with varying price points. These hotels should be as close to reception location as possible. S ettle on an invitation design and begin the proofing process. Your invitation may go through several renditions before it’s just right, so give yourself plenty of time. If you are planning on having your invitations hand addressed, hire a calligrapher now. S tart planning the honeymoon. Make sure your passport and any necessary shots are up to date if you will be traveling out of the country.
5 - 6 MONTHS M eet with the officiant and then plan your ceremony. If you are required to attend counseling or attend classes related to your particular faith, begin these as soon as your officiant says to. A rrange transportation for yourself and any guests. O rder your cakes. S tart your day-of timeline. Work with your planner and other vendors (DJ, photographer) to schedule any special moments you want to be sure are documented.
4 MONTHS B uy the shoes you will wearing and bring them to your first dress fitting. P urchase your veil. P lan a hair and make-up rehearsal with your stylist. Make sure they are available for your big day. V isit your DJ’s website and peruse his or her playlist. Be sure to let him or her know what songs you definitely want (especially your first dances) and more importantly, those you don’t want to hear at all. If you are planning on live entertainment, make sure they can perform your first dances or have the availability to play them digitally. P lan the rehearsal dinner. Settle on the guest list and reserve the venue. F inalize invitations and place the order. Some processes can take up to four weeks to print, so give yourself plenty of time to mail.
3 MONTHS D on’t leave your toasts to chance. Ask a select list of people to give toasts or speak at the wedding or rehearsal dinner so they have time to craft a wellconsidered speech. P lan the program and readings so your readers will have time to rehearse. S econd dress fitting. Plan to purchase your undergarments this same day. F inalize the order of the ceremony and reception. P rint programs. P urchase wedding rings. M eet with your planner or other wedding pros and finalize your day-of schedule. Type up the timeline and send it to all of your vendors (this includes photographer, caterer, baker, decorator and church coordinator). The more you plan, the less stress and drama there is on the day of. F inalize the menu and flowers. I f you are having a number of out-of-town guests, plan welcome gift bags. These need be as simple as a bottle of water, a few snacks and a list of some of the more popular tourist sites where you live.
1 MONTH T rack your RSVPs and call people who haven’t replied. N o more than 30 days ahead, get your marriage license. M ail rehearsal dinner invitations. T hird and final dress fitting. P ay your final fees to as many of your vendors as you can.
0 - 10 DAYS M eet with your planner for any last minute adjustments or confirmations you feel you need to be reassured about. A sk a trusted friend who is not in the wedding party to be your day-of “Helper.” This person is your planner if you’ve hired one. They will handle things like paying vendors, handing out tips and making sure your wedding party is on the dance floor. S end wedding timeline to wedding party. P ick up wedding dress. W rite checks for vendors, put checks and tips in envelopes to be handed out at the event. S chedule mani’s and pedi’s for you and your girls the day before the wedding. A ssemble and distribute welcome baskets. P ack for honeymoon.
2 MONTHS M ail invitations. RSVP cut off should be about 10 days before the wedding. S tart writing those thank you notes. You’ll thank yourself for getting a head start on this! C hange up date night with dancing lessons. Dancing to your first dance several times with some expert guidance can help ease those jitters. P lan your photography shoot list and then meet with your photographer to make sure he/she knows exactly what moments you want captured. F inalize your playlist with your band or DJ.
AFTER WEDDING G et your thank you notes out as soon as possible. You have up to a year. B e sure to update your personal documents if you are changing your last name: Driver’s license, passport, insurance paperwork, bank accounts, etc. T ake a moment to call your loved ones and say how much you love them and appreciate how they helped you all through this process. CASH CONTROL
If the two of you are paying for your own wedding (which more and more couples are), you might want to head to your marriage counseling classes before you tackle this one. Setting a budget is easy, sticking to it is another matter altogether. Even if your families are going to assist with paying for your big day, you should be respectful of everyone’s budgetary limits. Here is a list of the most common items you will need to pay for and a suggested percentage for each category. This is a flexible list and you may decide to spend more on one thing and less on another based on what is most important to you for your big day.

FEELING NERVOUS OR HAVING STICKER SHOCK? Changing your perspective can help. If you consider what you spend on a night out for dinner, drinks and entertainment, your per person cost is either about the same or a little lower. And remember, YOU are in control of your spending and the easiest place to save money is to be ruthless with your guest list! HAPPILY EVER AFTER BEGINS HERE...

I nvitations, enclosures, and announcements (don’t forget the stamps on the RSVP cards!) he bride’s wedding gown T and accessories The groom paying for the bride’s bouquet is an interesting concept and something that is staging a bit of a comeback. We think it’s a sweet gesture, but not commonly done here on the Coast.
More than one mom has said, "If I knew how much work this was for my first daughter, I would’ve hired a planner then." Hence the reason this item is number one on this list and should be on yours as well!

This is one of those instances where the rules are out the window. Weddings are expensive and in lots of cases, the bride, groom, her parents, his parents and sometimes aunts and grandparents are paying these expenses.
Transportation and lodging expenses for the officiant if from another town and if invited to officiate by the Generally, bride’s family this is only
reserved for those attendants who are from out of town and do not necessarily need two nights (or more) at a fancy hotel. Most families have plenty of extra beds to accommodate these attendants without spending too much money.

Here in the South, there is a committee of ladies that put together all types of showers and little parties. This is the case here as well. The hostesses will plan the menu, provide the decorations and generally have fun cooing over the bride and her attendants.

Same goes for the out of town attendants of the groom. Most families have plenty of extra beds to accommodate these attendants without spending too much money.

Transportation and lodging expenses for the officiant, if from another town and if invited to officiate by the groom’s family The marriage license Now this one is a throw back. And not one we remember anyone in recent memory asking for. We’ll keep it on the list. It’s a romantic idea, though.
Transportation for the groom and best man to the ceremony The bride’s bouquet (when it is local custom for the groom to pay for it) The bride’s going away corsage, if wearing one
Boutonnieres for groom’s attendants Corsages for immediate members of both families (unless the bride has included them in her florist’s order) The officiant’s fee or donation Groom’s gift to bride Gifts for groom’s attendants Honeymoon expenses
This item and the one just above about boutonnieres, while a good idea, is more about practicality and cost savings. While it is certainly a nice thought to pay for these items, one person (usually the bride along with her planner) should handle all of the floral/ decor needs for the wedding so nothing gets forgotten in the shuffle.

THE WEDDING INDUSTRY
A planner's perspective By Tenesha Danielle Batiste
The current state of the wedding industry on the Mississippi Gulf Coast is blessed, booked, and busy! The industry is coming back full circle with all the bells and whistles, and brides are continuing with many pre-Covid traditions. In 2021, many brides had customized masks made for the entire bridal party, they requested guests to wear masks, and they even had disposable mask mandates throughout the ceremony and sanitization stations throughout the reception. For my first wedding of 2022, my Bride requested guests wear masks, but the bridal party did not. This trend is slowly shifting. Some brides do not want the Covid stigma on their wedding pictures and videography for their wedding. One new trend that has emerged is Covid has made it easier for Brides and Grooms to invite only people who are really close to them and their love story and not just everyone they have ever met. People often discount how stressful compiling the guest list is for couples. Out of courtesy, some couples feel obligated to invite acquaintances and their parent’s friends and coworkers. But streamlining the guests list allows couples to do more and put money on things they truly could not afford otherwise. My number one tip for brides in 2022 is to budget appropriately! Budgeting is not a bad word, and it does not mean you are being cheap or that you cannot have your dream wedding. I budget for my brides, and it is my job to help couples stay within their budget.
WHEN CONSIDERING YOUR BUDGET, ASK YOURSELF THE FOLLOWING: 1. What are your non-negotiables? What are some things you cannot live without for your wedding
168
GULFCOASTWEDDINGSMAGAZINE.COM
day? Entertainment? Band? Violinist? Alcohol? Open Bar? Types of food for the reception? Big wedding party or small wedding party? Transportation? Make sure your budget illustrates your non-negotiables. 2. The guest list is one of the first things to consider. When dealing with any vendor or booking your venue, one of the very first things they will ask is how many guests you are expecting. I encourage brides to review a list of the last wedding and/or graduation in your close family. That gives you a great start, and you can deduct and add to that list accordingly. 3. Fresh flowers, silk flowers, or a combination of both? I have planned beautiful weddings using all three options. There is no right, wrong, good, or bad in this arena. This will help your planner design appropriately. Tenesha & Company is a full service event-planning firm located in Gautier, MS. Weddings are so personal! I love to see couples who take ownership and really show their personal style. In 2022, I see couples throwing traditions out the window and discovering what works for them and their budget. More and more couples are ditching what they think they are ‘“supposed” to do at weddings and are instead creating design elements that showcase their unique relationship. My favorite 2022 trend is creating an epic “wow” moment by incorporating a memorable design element for your wedding. This can be done, regardless of budget, through flowers, lighting, or the tablescape. Whether it is choosing floral print dresses for your bridesmaids, building a champagne tower instead of a bridal cake, or finding a photographer who can also capture your day using 35 mm film, couples are seeking inspiration that speaks to them so they can secure the perfect vendors to execute their wedding vision. PHOTOGRAPHY
WEDDING DAY
Photography Tips
Great wedding photos provide a window to look back and reminisce on the day you said “I do.” From the posed portraits to the in-the-moment candids, your photographer will capture all the best moments between you, your spouse, and your family and friends. Here are some tips to make you and your wedding day picture perfect. 1. Prepare for unexpected things to happen. Weddings are complex and things happen. Try not to worry about the incidents and enjoy your day! Try to relax and let someone else handle any issues that come up.
2. Lighting is so important- the more the better for photographs. If you are unsure, ask your photographer to show you images with different lighting scenarios to help you decide if you want more natural light or need uplighting, etc. Also, the best time for amazing images is during the golden hour, so talk with your planner and photographer to use this gorgeous light perfectly. 3. Ask your officiant to politely announce to your guests to put away devices and cameras and capture the beautiful moments with their hearts. Also, ask the officiant to step out of the frame during your first kiss! Don’t forget to hold your kiss a little longer or kiss a couple of times, and show your excitement when you are announced and start walking back down the aisle! 4. Have one of your bridesmaids keep up with your lipstick and powder/makeup for any touchups during portraits and after kissing, etc. 5. Do a bridal session! It’s a great way for a trial run with hair and makeup, and you can make any changes before your big day. Also, bring someone with you during this session to help with touchups, to adjust your dress and veil, and to help carry your dress as you move around the portrait location. 6. On the wedding day, keep the dressing rooms free of clutter for better pictures of you and your bridal party getting ready. This also saves time when your photographers arrive. Designate one area away from where pictures are being taken to put bags, boxes, etc. 7. Avoid tan lines. If you go out in the sun, consider a strapless swimsuit this summer, especially if you are planning a late summer or fall wedding.
172
GULFCOASTWEDDINGSMAGAZINE.COM
8. Ask the groomsmen to remember to remove phones, keys and anything else out of their front pockets during portraits and the wedding. Photographers will check for this, but it will save time if we don’t have to stop shooting to allow them to go put them away. 9. At your final dress fitting, have someone use a cell phone and record/ photograph your dress being bustled. Every dress is different and it will save a lot of time and stress. 10. When walking up the aisle, walk slowly, don’t look down, and remember to smile! Your photographers can capture a lot more great images if you don’t walk fast! 11. Look at each other during the ceremony, which sounds easy, but being nervous in front of all your guests can cause you to stare at the officiant. You may not even realize you’re doing it until you get your pictures back. 12. Make a list of family members who you want in your pictures during the formal family/group picture time and provide it to your photographers. After several pictures, you may forget who you did or didn’t take a picture with. Make an announcement during your rehearsal dinner for those family members to stay after the ceremony is finished. It takes a lot of time if you have to track down family or send someone to find them. 13. If planning an exit, consider doing a last dance with your partner while guests are getting lined up and handed the sparklers, etc. It can take around 1015 minutes to get everyone ready for you to come out. Talk to your DJ about having a dance with just the two of you and your photographer/videographer. It’s so special! 14. Lastly, if you are planning any surprises, special dances, or gift exchanges, let your photographer know! And remember to enjoy your day and trust all your vendors; we want your day to be magical! VIDEOGRAPHY
WEDDING DAY
Videography Tips
When looking for a videographer, find one who best matches your style. See what having a videographer adds to your wedding day. By combining the quality of a moving video as well as sound design, video captures the entire essence of your day. You will be able to see all of your own emotions as well as those of your partner, your loved ones, and your friends! You will get to hear the ambient sounds of your day as well as your vows and even the sentiment in your voice when you say “I do.” Video is an immersive experience that many say is the easiest way to relive their wedding day since it immediately takes them back to how they felt in each moment. When looking for a videographer, find one who best matches your style. Do you want a cinematic and timeless style of edit? Or would a fun and fast-paced edit better match the energy of your day? Watching a videographer’s work and portfolio can be a fun process to decide on what style would be perfect for the wedding you’re planning.

Consider preserving the quality of your wedding film by finding a videographer who offers 4k Videography. We are used to seeing many videos on TV and online in HD (or 2K). However, as video quality continues to improve, more and more of the content we see online and on TV will be upgrading to 4k! Preserve your wedding day in 4k for the future! Feel free to look for inspiration and communicate it to your videographer. If you see something in someone else’s wedding film you loved, tell your videographer so they can understand and execute your vision. Bridal Makeup
Trends
Here are some makeup trends I am seeing for brides this year.
NATURAL
I have noticed that my brides want to look like themselves but with makeup: an enchanted version of themselves. One way to achieve this is is using cream blushes that mimic and melt with the skin, defined but soft brows, and foundation that is skin like.
MATTE PINK LIPS
I see a call for nude pink lips. Lining the lip with a stable liner and filling in with a soft matte will create a longer wearing lipstick. Make sure you exfoliate your lips and treat overnight with a lip serum before your big day to insure your lips are luscious.
A NON SMOKE ON THE LASH LINE
A truly stunning trend is eyes that pop, and you don’t have to have a dark black smokey eye to achieve this. Brushing out the lash line with Teddy by MAC or you favorite dark brown liner or shadow is a good way to shape the eye without giving yourself raccoon eyes. Brittney M. Effortless
BRIDAL HAIR By Bria Fowler
A
s an artist, I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be able to speak on something I hold dear to me. I love being able to be there for brides and their bridal parties on their special day. The trends lately have been soft and elegant. While the day warrants an effortless flair, as a bridal stylist, I know these soft styles have to last an entire day full of photos. When I add my touch, I strive to make it last. I’ve also been daring natural-haired brides to embrace their own natural curls, coils and kinks. I worked with a bride-to-be earlier this year on styled shoots, and seeing her embrace her beauty and natural hair with help from my skills has been so amazing. The smile that comes from her is so genuine when she sees herself in her truest form. That’s the moment I strive for with brides, the genuine happiness on a day to celebrate their love.
TIPS FOR THE BRIDES:
I would say have an open mind when it comes to your chosen style. The starting point will change based on your hair’s thickness, it’s ability to hold curls, length etc. Most styles brides fall in love with have an extra special something that makes the picture look flawless. In reality, hair may have been added or an extra piece for fullness. When that understanding is made, we as stylist and client can come together to make something that’s unique and special for you. Also trusting that a seasoned stylist is trying to help your styles last longer with a tighter curl. Starting with soft curls looks beautiful and elegant for your initial pictures but what about when you get to the reception? Your wispy pieces are now completely straight, your stylist has your back when we give you that bouncy curl hours before your ceremony. A connection and trust goes a long way on your special day! Bria is the owner of Elle Louise LLC, here on the Mississippi, Gulf Coast. She is a licensed cosmetologist that primarily works in bridal as a hairstylist and frequently works on set shooting with Tracy Branch Agency.

The
Cake
Get your sweet tooth ready for these 2022 cake trends.
MINI CAKES
Just as micro weddings are on the rise, so are micro cakes. Couples are opting for one to two tiers to cut for the photo op and serving individual desserts to guests.
SEPARATED TIERS
Give your cake new height with this trend that is quickly taking over 2022. These clear pillars can be hidden with frosting, filled with flowers or left visible to make a big statement.
EDIBLE BLOOMS AND CLASSIC GREENERY
From pressed sugar flowers to real foliage decorations, couples are giving their cakes the botanical treatment.
ALTERNATIVE SWEET SPREADS
Not everyone wants the large, centerpiece cake towering over their reception. At weddings this year, don’t be surprised to see cookie or pie tables, donut stacks or other sweet options in lieu of a traditional cake.
SEMI-NAKED
Minimal design has always been around and this year, semi-naked cakes are here to stay.
CAKE HOOPS
Coming in various shapes and sizes, these nontraditional displays are gaining notarity. Accent them with florals or fabrics for a beautiful focal point.

An Out of the Box Rehearsal Dinner by William Rester, Dolce Bakeshop and Dolce Cafe
Typically thrown by the parents or family of the groom, the rehearsal dinner takes place the night before the wedding and is often an afterthought; with final decor and preparations going up, planning a large gathering can seem daunting. At Dolce, we can provide the loving couple with an experience that makes this moment just as unforgettable as the ceremony itself ! Reservations for the rehearsal dinner are often made at local eateries, but what if you could create an outdoor event with a special menu crafted just for the couple? We have recently begun offering the front lawn of Dolce Bakeshop for tented candlelight dinners overlooking the Gulf ! The bridal party and their families will be treated to a Gatsby-esque night of cocktails, cuisine, and confections. The process is simple: call us and let us handle the details! We love to interact with our clients, so creating a menu filled with their favorites is a breeze. We reach out to trusted vendors to secure tenting, tables, and place settings, and we incorporate any decor or personal touches that you want to provide. We recently hosted the Rasmussen and Corsi families for a fall feast of tenderloin filets, hand-crafted drinks, and a cheesecake bar. Looking for something a little more casual? We can do that, too. Let’s gather everyone together for a rehearsal crawfish boil! The possibilities are wide open. If the couple can dream it, we can do it. Reach out on Facebook or Instagram to Dolce Bakeshop or Dolce Cafe today, and let’s change the rehearsal dinner from a simple night out to a night to remember!

Honeymoon
Trends
At Beloved Getaways, we are noticing that clients are willing to pay more for honeymoon trips than they were before. Now that we are two years into the pandemic, couples are tired of postponing and waiting; newlyweds are moving ahead with honeymoon plans and are more willing to travel farther and pay more for trips to bucketlist locations. Clients are also upgrading their experiences, lengthening their trips, picking luxury properties, and taking private tours. There has also been a clear shift of requests from traditional travel destinations to more far-flung, adventure-oriented ones. Before the pandemic, couples planning their honeymoon usually started off with a destination in mind, not a place to stay. However, accommodations are now the starting point for trip planning. Interest in all-inclusive resorts will always be popular and is booming, but people also want the swim-up rooms or rooms with a private plunge pool. And everyone wants that over-the-water bungalow experience. One of the most requested vacations will always be a relaxing trip to a nearby beach. Internationally, Mexico is one of the most appealing picks for warm weather escapes. There are also Caribbean nations; Turks and Caicos, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic are high on travelers’ lists these days. Hawaii, Florida, and Puerto Rico top the list for domestic beaches, although they are not all inclusive destinations. Island destinations such as the Maldives and Seychelles, in the Indian Ocean, or Tahiti and Fiji, in the South Pacific, offer couples escapes to private huts, villas and bungalows that guarantee fewer interactions with strangers. As always, Americans are still eager to get to Western Europe: Greece, Croatia, Italy, and Iceland continue to be high priorities for travelers. A huge request lately has been a suite with a private pool in Santorini or on the coast of Italy. Many people love the thought of being on Safari and seeing animals in their natural habitats. As such, desert safaris are attracting visitors to Northern Africa and the United Arab Emirates. We are also noticing that clients will request to stay in Dubai for a couple of days before flying to their next destination. Regardless of your honeymoon destination and desires, Beloved Getaways will happily customize itineraries designed to your specific interests.
One of the most requested vacations will a lways b e a r e l ax i n g t r i p to a nearby beach.
