women’s resource center
Real help,
REAL ANSWERS The Women’s Resource Center’s mission is to uphold the sanctity of life while encouraging the physical, emotional, educational, and spiritual well-being of the whole person. “We work to promote personal health, strong family units and thriving communities. Our goal is to support and encourage women in making positive life choices.”—Tiffany Bell, Executive Director, WRC. We offer a sturdy helping hand to women who think they may be pregnant— both a free test that can provide answers as soon as a woman misses her menstrual cycle, and the warm support of a caring counselor. Women can rely on us to offer emotional support, explore options, and discuss facts to empower them in making positive and healthy choices for them and their babies. We also offer healing support to those women who have experienced abortion. Through a knowledgeable and gentle class instructor, these women can process their grief and find a new life of color, freedom, and joy.

TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE OF OVER 75 YEARS
TRACIE AND NICOLAS STRAYHAM Continuing a tradition of excellence, Tracie and Nicolas Strayham are the new owners of Lamey Electric. Robert Rockco, the owner/operator for the past 16 years and Tracie’s father, will continue with Lamey Electric as a consultant. Tracie has 11 years’ experience owning and operating her own successful business which she established in 2005, however she is very excited about putting a woman’s touch on this electrical contracting business and taking over the family business to keep it moving forward. “Daddy was very excited to hear that I wanted to partake in the ownership of his company alongside my husband, Nicolas. He was hoping that one of his daughters would show interest in something he has put so much work into establishing.” Nicolas Strayham has worked with Robert Rockco since 2015, learning everything he can about the business. Nicolas graduated from Mississippi State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business, and just recently passed his Master Electrician and Business Law exam.

A royal tradition
Susan Hunt and her family help to keep GCCA customs alive for 108 years

by Dorothy P. Wilson If one were to put a face on Mardi Gras, a handful of names might come to mind — with Susan Hunt’s at or near the top of the list. That’s because she and her family still carry the torch for all things Mardi Gras. At age 75, she is one of the most signifi ant keepers of Coast Carnival history. “If you cut her wrist, she’d bleed purple, green and gold,” says Bobby Mahoney of Mary Mahoney’s Old French House restaurant. “She’s not going to bleed red — that’s for sure,” adds January-February 2017 36

Nancy Rogers, executive director of the Gulf Coast Carnival Association. Rogers has worked behind the scenes with GCCA since she was 15 and has directed the association for 20 years. “It is always so wonderful to have someone family related to work with to offer insight on all of the traditions,” she says. “Susan and her sister (Martha Hunt Tripp) are both still involved.” Rogers says she talks mostly with Susan about GCCA, but all of the Hunts still play a role in the association.

At right, Queen Sharon Kathlee Neirynck (1978), queen’s luncheon coordinator Ruth Hunt, and Martha McDermott. Walter Henry “Skeet” Hunt, is parade captain.
Susan grew up seeing Mardi Gras history roll out right in front of her. Her grandfather was captivated by a Mardi Gras parade that passed in front of his home in 1892 when he was age 4 and later was instrumental in forming the organization that became the Gulf Coast Carnival Association. Historian Murella Powell captured a slice of the Hunt family’s Mardi Gras history in a book called “ ‘Skeet’: The Public Life of Walter Henry Hunt … American” and in a pamphlet prepared for the Mardi Gras Museum. Powell says Biloxi Herald reported on masquerade balls, parties and dinners in the late 1880s. In 1908, Biloxi held the fi st Mardi Gras parade with 17 fl ats, 150 flambeau carriers, a 12-piece Herald Newspaper Band, grand marshal, the mayor and city councilmen. In 1916, Susan’s grandfather, Biloxi’s mayor and two other men drew up a charter of incorporation titled “The Biloxi Carnival and Literary Asso40

ciation.” In 1929, other Coast cities joined in, and in around 1949, the literary association became the Gulf Coast Carnival Association. Susan’s grandfather served as grand marshal and parade chairman for 44 years. Susan’s father, Walter Kenner “Skeet” Hunt, became general manager of GCCA and parade chairman in 1950. Like his father, he stayed involved for many years; he became the fi st captain of the association in 1953 and served in that role for 18 years. When Walter “Skeet” Hunt was asked why he put so much of his time and effort into something he wasn’t paid to do, he responded, “When I see the faces of the children as they watch the parade, that’s payment enough.” Serving children and the community is a thread that runs through the Hunt family and leads right into Susan’s life as well. When Susan graduated Biloxi High in 1959, the options for women were limited: “nurse, teacher, secretary
or you got married,” she says. Susan easily says, “school was not my bag,” but her guidance counselor, Elizabeth Munro, was able to persuade her to attend Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Miss. Susan says she really needed the structured environment of an all-women’s school — because if she had a choice between studying and partying, she’d choose socializing for sure! She graduated with a degree in library science and elementary education, and that led her into teaching, her life’s passion. She taught and was principal in a number of places, retiring after 33 years, but didn’t end her work with children. She holds Parent Academies and is the certifi ation manager for Biloxi Excel By 5 program in 2009. In her “spare time,” she has “worked” as a hostess at Mary Mahoney’s on Saturdays and special days for the past 30 years. “Yeah, when she started, people were all lined up to get in here,” says Bobby Mahoney. “I had to tell her to

Mardi gras History 10 facts you may not know about Mardi Gras by Murella Powell
From the time in 1699 when Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville wrote “March 3rd. Mardy Gras Day” in his journal, the celebration of that day (also called Shrove Tuesday) has gone through a continuous evolution, with customs changing and customs falling along the way. Long before the advent of parading, celebrants attended balls and parties. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, towns along the Mississippi Coast were virtually deserted on Mardi Gras day as people went by train to the parades in New Orleans. This is probably why the kings of the Coast’s first two parades, held in Biloxi in 1891 and 1892, were named Rex. Here are some other interesting and unusual facts about Mardi Gras. • Marquis Pierre Rigaud Cavagnial de Vaudreuil, the French Governor of Louisiana from 1743 to 1753, celebrated Mardi Gras with lavish dinners served up on gold-plated dishes. • As early as 1822, New Orleans French newspapers reported the many Mardi Gras balls and parties that took place during the carnival season. • A 2,000-pound bull festooned with garlands and gilded horns led Biloxi’s 1908 carnival parade. Called the Boeuf Gras (fat beef), the bull was the ancient French symbol of Mardi Gras. The Boeuf Gras led Mardi Gras parades in Paris during the rule of the Bourbon kings and under the reign of Napoleon. • Biloxi’s only Carnival parade in 1909 was strange and unusual. Called the Mardi Gras Road Tax Parade, it consisted of several wagons and about 150 marching men. The participants wore comic costumes and carried signs protesting the “tyranny” of Biloxi’s new road tax law. • A group called the Merry Mystics staged a Mardi Gras parade in Bay St. Louis in 1867. Moss Point’s first attempt at a parade took place in 1909. One of its four floats featured a real saw mill, which represented the town’s main industry. • Due to WWI, Mardi Gras masking on the streets along the Mississippi Coast was prohibited in 1918. Masks could be donned only after entering a building. • The only parade to roll on Mardi Gras day in 1921 was staged by a group of African-Americans called the Krewe of Biloxi Indians. From 1932 to 1949, the Vernon Gilbert Colored Elks Lodge sponsored African-American Zulu parades in downtown Biloxi. The AfricanAmerican Krewe of Foogaboo paraded at Pass Christian during the 1930s. • In 1934, the people along the Mississippi Coast had a voice in selecting Queen Ixolib. A person only had to purchase a ticket to the queen’s charity ball to become eligible to vote. • The first Mardi Gras parade after WWII occurred in 1946. With postwar funds still tight, Queen Ixolib wore a store-bought white gown upon which sequins were sown, and her train was fashioned from the silk of a parachute adorned with silver stars.
• The Gulf Coast Carnival Association officially adopted the title “captain” in 1953. Prior to that time, the person who served in that January-February 2017 44 capacity was called general manager.
v18n2 32-59 mardi gras.indd 44
SUSAN HUNT continued from page 40 stop talking to people; we have to seat ‘em and feed ‘em!” Susan hugs, chats and and cuts up just like that with so many Biloxians, one might think she knows EVERYONE in that city. “I don’t think there’s anyone she doesn’t know,” says City Councilman Kenny Glavan after getting his hug and kiss from Susan. “She even knows people who are moving down here!’ Susan never married but she has “children” all over the Coast. She calls anyone she taught “her children,” and whenever you see her you’ll fi d her hugging and fussing over her “children” who are adults now. “My passion …,” Susan says, pausing as she tries to formulate the right words. “It is to make a difference in children’s and people’s lives.” And that seems to be the Hunts’ way of doing things. During the early days of Mardi Gras, all the preparations were made at the Hunt home, except for decorating the fl ats, she recalls. “Mardi Gras was a part of our lives,” she says. “We lived with Mardi Gras all year long. Our house had costumes, liquor, beads, etc. all year long!” She continues, “Mardi Gras was a tradition which began with my grandfather, and the tradition continued through my parents — Ruth and Walter Kenner “Skeet” Hunt; my uncle and aunt, Bartlo and Mona Hunt; and my aunt, Phyllis Hunt Graham. The tradition continues as my sister, Martha, and I are still very active with the Gulf Coast Carnival Association.” Susan and her sister continue to be involved with GCCA in various roles. Susan is a member of GCCA, serves on the Mardi Gras Museum Board, Children’s Marching Parade Committee, and participates in the parade. She also serves the GCCA royalty and their guests at City Hall on parade day. “If you’re not on the list, you’re not getting in,” she says. Her sister, Martha, serves in the Children’s Marching Parade and is chairperson for the Show Box Float Contest. Why do they still stay so involved? Susan says, “As stated by my parents, ‘That’s payment enough for us just to see the smile on the children’s faces as the parade goes down the street”! Martha adds, “Because it was and still is a family tradition. ... My parents were always telling us we should give back to the community. Helping gave us pleasure knowing that the children and people of the community could benefit from the fun of Mardi Gras.”

Order of Billikins
Established in 1935 Mission The club was formed as a private Carnival association for women with an objective to hold one masked ball a year on the third Friday preceding Mardi Gras. The “themed” ball is carried out with a royal court consisting of six maids/dukes along with a queen and a king. The name of the organization is derived from the Japanese god of mirth and merriment: “Billiken.” Membership If an opening is available in the Order of Billikins, one must be nominated by an existing member and then voted on to become a member of the club.
Events The club will hold its 80th anniversary ball on Feb. 10, 2017.

MONEY
5 steps to get wealthy in 2017 The end of 2016 is fast approaching, and while many of us area already caught up in all of the hustle and bustle that by Lee Rogers comes with the holiday season, there is actually no better time to regroup, refocus and to start thinking about 2017. What are your goals for the coming year? For many people, these goals include fi ancial motivations. If you want to fi ally get wealthy in 2017, here are five ways you can actually do it. 1. Work for your dreams, not someone else’s. If you really want to
start making money and fi ally be wealthy in 2017, then you need to do something that you are truly passionate about. Without this passion, you are never going to reeach your full earning potential. Focus on doing what you love and what you are passionate about, not just something that happens to be in a highly paid fi ld. Really ask yourself and dig deep to think about what you can see yourself becoming obsessed with. Obsession is the key to true success and it can lead you to real wealth. As real, lasting wealth is not just about money. 2. Dream big, but start small. Everyone wants big success fast but it’s better to go slowly. Optimize your process fi st before you try to go big.
3. Give to others instead of yourself. Most people fi d this tough to do, but trust me, you can only have so many Lamborghinis and Ferraris and Porsches. They are not as fulfilling as giving back to charities. Remember that true wealth is not just about having the most money, but the most inner peace, too. You will truly feel successful, established and wealthy if you start giving to others. 4. Get healthy. I know it sounds a little corny, but it is actually true: health is wealth. You can have all of the money in the world, but if you are sick, or dead, you can’t enjoy it. As much as you work and as hard as you work, don’t

Yes, there’s still time to reduce tax liability by Tina Perkins
There are still options to lower your 2016 tax liability. Granted the options are few and the time to execute them has shortened. The 2017 transactions available to lower the 2016 tax liability are contributions to retirement plans: traditional IRA, SEP-IRA, Simple-IRA and Solo 401(k). Each plan has its own qualifi ations and limitations. Some offer greater contributions and deductions than others and each have contribution deadlines. The traditional IRA must be funded by April 18, 2017, and there are no extensions. The SEP-IRA, Simple-IRA and Sole 401(k) may be funded by the extended due date, October 15, 2017, if an extension is filed. Anyone who has earned income and their non-working spouse can contribute to a traditional IRA. Earned income includes wages reported on a W-2 and net-profits from a self-employed business. The max contribution is $5,500; however, if you are 50+ at December 31, 2016, you can make an additional $1,000 catch-up contribution. The self-employed entrepreneur may fund a SEP-IRA up to the lessor of 25% of total compensation or $53,000. File an extension and you will have until October 15, 2017, to fund your SEP. If you have employees, your employer contribution percentage must be equal to all eligible employees. Since calculating the contribution for the self-employed is tricky, you should seek professional assistance. Other options available to the entrepreneur are Simple-IRA or Solo 401(k). These plans had a set-up deadline during the 2016 tax year. If you met the set-up deadline
and file an extension, you have until October 15, 2017, to fund the employer’s matching contributions for the Simple-IRA and the entire contribution for the Solo 401(k). A business owner with no employees, (or that self-employed person and his spouse), can make contributions to a Solo 401(k). Still need additional deductions? Here are some unused or overlooked deductions: • Self-employed business owner — Mileage $0.54 per mile, section 179 or bonus depreciation, self-employed health insurance deduction. • Income (that can be taxed at 0%) — Qualifi d dividends and long-term capital gains. • Adjustments to income — Educator’s expense and student loan interest. • Itemized deductions — Mileage for medical or moving purposes at $0.19 per mile, charity at $0.14 per mile, payments for insurance premiums to cover medical care or qualifi d long-term care, investment interest expense and gambling losses (up to gambling winnings. • Credits – Education, retirement savings and child & dependent care Remember everyone’s tax situation is different. You should talk with your tax advisor to determine if any of these options are right for yours. Additional limitations and qualifi ations apply to each of these options. RACHEL’S STORY When Rachel Gnau was issued her fi st set of turnout gear on Oct. 31, 1981, she says being a fi efi hter has been a rollercoaster ride of an adventure. There are good days when lives are saved and there are tough days when no words or kindness can take away a family’s agony of losing a loved one. Because the hardest part of being a fi efi hter is the collective memories of loss over the years, Rachel’s appreciation for her family holds a very dear place in her life. “With my grandchildren growing like weeds, my two daughters, spouse, and my father growing older, it’s important to me that they know how much I care for them, so I show them as much as possible,” Rachel says. “The fi e service is a great teacher of lessons, and in this job, we learn rather early on that some mistakes can have great consequences. Life is so fl eting and fragile, and possessions are insignifi ant compared to loved ones. We Rachel Gnau, 53 should strive each and every day Station Supervisor/ Paramedic, Bay St. Louis to live life, show those that we Fire Department care about how much we love them and tell them each and every day.” Rachel has been with the Bay St. Louis Fire Department for almost 12 years, and as a station supervisor and Engine Company Crew Chief, her responsibilities include providing incident command for any response within her district and sometimes in others, depending on the length and complexity of the incident. “I go to work every day knowing that what I’m faced with today will be, at least slightly, if not completely different from anything I’ve ever seen before,” Rachel says. “There is no ‘flap A into slot B’ for eight hours a day, but a new unknown 24 hours of problem solving and incident mitigation. Most of the time we’re not getting invited to enjoyable things; we’re called into people’s lives at a time of tragedy and it’s our calling to resolve that issue with the best outcome possible. If we can provide a solution and bring a little bit of comfort in a time of need, then we have fulfilled our commitment.”

Cathy L. Hunt Burleson, 63, Battalion Chief, Picayune Fire Department
Th s year, Cathy Hunt Burleson will celebrate 34 years as a fi efi hter with the Picayune Fire Department. It hasn’t been an easy journey balancing work and family, and there are plenty of holidays where she can recount spending it at the station, but Cathy has no regrets about her career decision. While working as a waitress in 1983, fi e service never crossed her mind until the local chief asked if she was interested in being a dispatcher, which then shifted to being asked if she might consider being a fi efi hter. Long story short, Cathy also now serves as an EMT, and over the course of more than three decades, she has been promoted from lieutenant to captain and is now a battalion chief. “I’m pretty proud of the fact that I was the fi st woman fi efi hter with Picayune, and I am still the only woman fi efi hter at Picayune,” she says. “Just being able to help people in their time of need is very rewarding, and knowing that my family and my friends are proud of me for the job that I do.” Her son, Jason Hunt, also followed his mom’s lead and has been with the Picayune Fire Department for 11 years. Cathy encourages women to pursue a career as a fi efi hter, but to remember they must give it their all and not expect any special privileges. “You have to pull your own weight,” she says. “Don’t think just because you’re a female that the guys will do most of the work.”

Marcia McDowell’s STORY BEFORE MY TRANSFORMATION My younger son and his then-girlfriend became engaged to be married in December 2014. Of course, I was excited but the next thought that went through my mind was, “What will I be able to wear to their wedding?” At over 410 pounds, you just don’t “fi d” a dress and buy it, but as their wedding date was getting close, I fi ally settled on a dress. Their wedding day was beautiful and a few weeks later, we saw the beautiful photos from the photographer. All was fi e until I was faced with a picture of my son and I dancing the mother/son dance together. I was in total disgust as I looked at myself in the pictures. Who was this person? Had I really gotten that big? I cried! I knew I was big but didn’t have a clue that I was that big! I didn’t know this because I never looked at myself in a full-length mirror. I didn’t own one and refused to look in one when I would be in stores.

WHAT I DID I immediately began looking for the “right” gym. I had belonged to gyms in the past but would only go for a short time because I felt judged when I would visit the gym. I tried to do things on my own, but I really didn’t know what was right and wrong. I would normally only eat one meal a day and that would be late in the evening — fast food on my way home from work. In reality, I was causing my body to go into starvation mode by conserving food, not knowing when it would get its next meal. I was driving to work one day and saw a sign that said Anytime Fitness was moving into D’Iberville. I was excited because I knew the location was between my home and office nd there would be no excuses in going. The gym opened in October of 2015 and my friend and I were great at going to the gym at least three times per week … until Thanksgiving rolled around! I went out of town for the Thanksgiving holiday.

SUCCESS MARCIA continued from page 68 When I returned, I was all caught up in preparations for Christmas. By January, I was hardly going to the gym. What a disappointment. Fast forward to March 23, 2016. I got this phone call from the new trainer at the gym. He said, “My name is Brendan Jones and I am the new trainer at Anytime Fitness. I would like to meet with you to discuss some things.” I asked when he wanted to meet and he said, “Right now!” I explained that I was an hour away from home. He told me that was no problem, he would wait for me at the gym. I reluctantly agreed to stop by the gym to meet with him. It wasn’t a comfortable visit. He seemed extremely knowledgeable. Not only was he a trainer but he was also a nutritionist. Great! Not only is he going to make me workout but he is going to make me eat properly, too!!!! As I stood up to leave his office I sked when he wanted to start. He said he would have started me that night but I hadn’t brought workout clothes so we would start tomorrow.
couldn’t do. He made me prove it to him. He would then show me how I could do things and he would work patiently with me until I was able to do what he was asking of me. In my mind, I thought of circuit training on the machines and treadmills as working out. The fi st time Brendan took me to the weight fl or I stopped at the rubber mat and told him, “I’m not allowed over here. Th s is where the big boys work out.” He told me that I would feel comfortable in all areas of the gym. He told me that I would know how to work on all the machines. By May, there was not a machine in the gym that I didn’t feel comfortable working with. In working with Brendan, we found we had more women coming into the gym that were of the same mindset I was. In April/May we created our “Honey Bees” group. We meet twice a week and work out with Brendan as our trainer for an hour. We support each other and provide words of support and encouragement.
MY GOAL I returned to the gym the next day to begin the journey of my lifetime. When I walked into the gym, Brendan asked me if I trusted him. I thought about that question for a minute. My answer was, “Yes, with my life!” What did I have to lose? He weighed me in at 391 pounds. Previously being 410-plus pounds was not a place I wanted to stay. Brendan asked me if I had a weight goal in mind. I didn’t have a number in my head. I did, however, have some goals. My younger son and his wife were expecting their fi st baby. I wanted to be able to get up and down from the fl or so I could play with my new grandbaby. Th s was something I had not been able to do in years. Th s is something I missed with my fi st granddaughter. I also wanted be able to stand for periods of time. I work in business and many times have to stand for extended periods of time when speaking to groups of people. I wanted to stand instead of having to sit.
HOW I FEEL ABOUT MYSELF TODAY Working with Brendan has taught me the value of not only having a good workout regime but also eating properly. You can’t lose weight if you don’t work out and eat the correct foods. We do not diet. We have a nutrition plan. I now eat five well-balanced meals per day. I also work out at least six days per week. I do smallgroup classes (POUND, Zumba and Honey Bees), work out on my own at the gym and home, and, my favorite — I do weightlifting with my trainer three to four days per week. I love lifting weights. It is something I never envisioned myself doing. When I lift ith Brendan, I normally do the same routine that he does by just lowering the weight.
AFTER
HOW IT WORKED Brendan did not have an easy job. Even though I went into this weight-loss journey with an open mind, I did fi ht him on lots of things. I automatically told him there were things I
MY ADVICE TO OTHERS If I could give everyone one piece of advice it would be START. Ask for help. You aren’t alone in this struggle. You may have health issues. Health issues are something a good trainer knows how to work around. Find a gym and trainer that “fits” your personality. Stick with it and have someone who will hold you accountable for your actions. So far I have lost a total of 109.8 pounds, going from 391.2 pounds on March 24 to 281.4 pounds on December 1.

Rob Stinson’s STORY BEFORE MY TRANSFORMATION In November of 2015, I fractured my spine (L5) while riding a jet ski in Mexico. I returned to the states and after 1½ months of walking in pain, I decided to get a MRI. My neurosurgeon told me there was good news and bad news. The good news was that my spine healed on its own, but the bad news was that the nerve damage was permanent. I visited a “pain doctor” and found the entire process of sticking a needle into my spine intolerable, and I knew I had to fi d a better way to deal with the pain. WHAT I DID Th s is when I heard about Nolan Halliburton, a personal, professional trainer who focused on a balanced blending of diet, weights and aerobics to transform your body. I was thrilled to fi d out my neurosurgeon was willing to sign off n me starting. I immediately committed myself to a strict follow through of Nolan’s policies and diet. MY GOAL My goal was lose weight, get back in shape and strengthen my back: I have done all of these things. HOW IT WORKED I dedicated myself to working out 4 a.m.-6 a.m. MondayFriday. I had NEVER worked out with weights in my entire life. I had taught aerobics but only worried about staying slim. The development of muscles, and I am 60 years old, is nothing short of amazing. My wife cannot believe the positive changes.
AFTER
THE MOST DIFFICULT PART The hardest part was getting started. Nolan has a very strong personality, and on mornings when I feel like sleeping, I know Nolan will motivate me. HOW I FEEL ABOUT MYSELF TODAY The changes are simple to see and feel: I have lost 30 pounds in 6 months. I can now run five miles where before I had trouble running up stairs. MY ADVICE TO OTHERS My advice is simple: DO IT NOW, DON’T PUT IT OFF!!!

Physical Therapy Center ready to erase pains The new year is sure to bring some physical surprises our way, including flare-ups from old injuries and even discomforts from daily living. As we age or become more inactive, our bodies tend to lose varying degrees of physical health, strength and resilience. Even professional athletes and body builders can experience musculoskeletal injuries or spinal and joint weaknesses. Restoring strength, mobility, and function can also be key when recovering from surgery. Physical therapy plays a defin tive role in all of these instances. “I resolve to lose weight in 2017 and exercise vigorously every day!” If you are determined to make that your No. 1 New Year’s resolution, even after weeks of holiday partying and physical inactivity, Physical Therapy Center of Ocean Springs can help with those strained muscles, joints and much more. You may even learn new physical skills at PTCOS to improve your movement and function when you exercise. Founded in 1998 by physical therapist, Douglas Roll, the clinic is a direct refl ction of its founder’s credentials and expertise. Aside from being an orthopedic clinical specialist, Roll also is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists and holds certifi ation in a dry needling course for pain management. Hence, the services provided by the Physical Therapy Center are extensive and can satisfy the needs of patients with a variety of conditions, from massage to manipulation: • Comprehensive musculoskeletal evaluations • Innovate approaches to exercise to restore function • Specialty rehab programs for post-surgical shoulders, elbows, knees, necks and backs • Functional Capacities Evaluations (more than 8,000 completed since 1991) • Work injury rehabilitation • Manual therapy • Dry Needling • Spine and joint mobilization and manipulation • Aquatics
• Industrial therapy and early intervention services • Onsite therapy services for larger employers • Ergonomic job site analysis for employers • Modalities (spinal traction, electric stimulation, ultrasound, heat/cold) • Home exercise programs • Massage therapy • Pre and post bariatric programs
• Running analysis Our newest service is aquatic physical therapy, which is not the same as aquatic exercise. The difference is aquatic physical therapy requires the “skilled service” of a PT and/ or PTA that may include: clinical reasoning and decision making skills of a PT/PTA; patient has impairments and/ or disabilities which can be minimized or eliminated with aquatic physical therapy; patient has potential to maximize functional goals/outcomes to improve quality of life and ease burden of care; and the implementation of such therapy must comply with all standards of care, which impact all other treatment services. Aquatic exercise is the utilization of water for the implementation of quality of life, fitness-related or general health-related goals; can be delivered in a group setting that includes multiple clients and diagnoses; can be delivered by an individual other than a licensed physical therapist or physical therapy assistant; and usually has little or no accompanying paperwork, insurance involvement or written follow-up information required. The highly-trained therapists at PTCOS are evidencebased professionals who offer cost-effective treatment that can not only improve mobility and function, but also can reduce or relieve pain, reduce the need for surgery, and reduce the need for prescription pain medication. The care provided emphasizes allowing and encouraging patients to actively participate in a rehabilitation program that is designed to fit the individual. Whether you have private health insurance, have been injured on the job or automobile accident, or even if you would just like to gain strength, endurance or better motion, PTCOS has a rehabilitation program that will fit your needs. www.gcwmultimedia.com

Kandi Berkley’s STORY BEFORE MY TRANSFORMATION When I was at my heaviest, I weighed 245 lbs. and was a size 22. I was diabetic and had been placed on daily insulin injections. I also had high blood pressure and fibromyalgia. I was in some sort of pain on a daily basis. I could not participate in very many physical activities and was limited in things I could enjoy doing with my daughter. When I did attempt some, I usually paid for it by being in more pain the next day. Because of this, I believed that I was physically incapable of doing any sustained activity or exercise to change my health. I felt trapped in my body. For a long time, I was depressed and had settled in the “fact” that this was my life. It would only get worse because I was only going to get older (and we all “know” we fall apart as we age). I would one day not be able to function physically at all.
instant, something snapped. The sadness turned into disgust and anger at myself for allowing my life to become this way. I had to do something NOW.
BEFORE
MY GOAL During one of my semi-annual health check-ups, my doctor was reviewing my blood work results. My A1C (measure of average blood glucose levels) was steadily climbing at each visit and my current daily insulin injection dosage was maxing out. My daily pain maintenance medication dosage was also increasing. As I sat there and discussed the results and the options for my health treatments, I began thinking about where my life was headed. I thought about how disappointed my daughter looked when I would tell her I wasn’t able to go outside and play with her. I thought about the concern in her little eyes when she saw mommy hurting. I thought about her future and how she needs me to be a part of that future. In that
WHAT I DID The fi st goal I set was to lose 50 lbs. I wanted to be able to say I weighed less than 200 lbs. I also wanted to get off f my diabetes and blood pressure medications. Because I hated “exercise,” I had no specific lan other than to start cutting out carbs and calories. I started working out slowly on a Gazelle on almost every lunch break. For a visual reminder of my goals, I created two glasses to place in front of our TV and filled one with 50 marbles. As the weight dropped, I would let my daughter move marbles back and forth between the “bad” and the “good” glass, one for every pound lost or gained. The fi st 20 lbs. seemed to fly off. Then I hit my fi st plateau. I began working out on the Gazelle at night as well, and the scale would barely budge. I grew increasingly more frustrated at my lack of progress as each day passed. In looking for an extracurricular activity for my daughter, I took her to try a martial arts class at Alan Belcher MMA Club. I was fascinated by martial arts and was hoping she would feel the same. While we were being given a tour, I was shown the women’s-only kickboxing class that was in session. When I looked into the room, I saw women who were just... like... me.

What the GCW team learned #WhyWaitTillJanuary to #HealthierMe2017
The Gulf Coast Woman team set out in September to inspire others to not wait until January to start getting healthier. Several times a week, we hear from others that they took the challenge and they made it through the holidays without picking up another 5 lbs.! If you did wait for January, that’s cool, too. We want to inspire and encourage you as well. In this issue, the GCW team members share what they have learned so far. We hope this will be useful and informative. If you have questions for us, just post them on our Facebook page and we’ll get right back to you. We also encourage you to share your success with others by using this hashtag: #healthierme2017.
JENNIFER COX >>> 16 POUNDS GONE! I am about halfway through my Healthier Me challenge. I have lost 16 pounds, 8 inches, and a pants size! I feel better physically, mentally, and even spiritually. I appreciate all my sponsors and their support during this challenge. Here are three things I’ve learned so far on this journey: 1. I am stronger than I believed. 2. I have a huge support system that is very encouraging! 3. I am fi ding it easier to make better choices when it comes to nutrition.
The Skin Studio at Garrott Dermatology
TORI BISHOP >>> 31 POUNDS LIGHTER! So far I am 31 pounds lighter (yay, me!), and I expect to weigh less than 300 pounds by the time you read this issue of the magazine! I have not weighed less than 300 pounds for seven years so I’m ecstatic. I look forward to the next update in the March-April issue. I am four months in to #WhyWaitTillJanuary and I have had some great victories and a few set backs. I am a wife, mother, businesswoman, volunteer and more! Getting healthy means I have to carve out time for myself. Many times we don’t realize in fulfilling the many hats we wear as women, we can neglect our own needs. It has truly taken a team of people to keep me committed to this journey. My coach at Crossfit 228 keeps me accountable 86
to do my workouts. My nutritionist keeps me on track with my eating. My husband stays at home with the kids in the evening so I can go work out. And most of all, I am sticking to it! Here’s what I have learned: I have learned so much important information about food choices from my nutritionist/ dietician Miranda Hebert. She took me on a grocery store tour and showed me how to read labels and stay away from GMO (genetically modifi d) food. Many times people focus on calories. Miranda has educated me on ingredients and how to read labels to fi d hidden chemicals and sugars that impact your body. Th s has made a signifi ant difference with how I shop and cook for my family.

What the GCW team learned #WhyWaitTillJanuary to #HealthierMe2017 DOROTHY WILSON >>> DOWN 2 PANTS SIZES! I started my healthier you journey on Garden Park Medical Center’s Ideal Protein with a goal of losing 40 pounds. I lost 30 lbs. in a 10-week period and I am down two pants sizes! That’s really, really exciting and I am proud of myself. The weight loss means so much because I needed to lose to become healthier (obesity is linked to so many health risks like high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, stroke, sleep apnea). But this also was an opportunity to inspire others to choose a healthier lifestyle. Life is not just about you and your goals; it’s about making a difference in the lives of others everyday. I am so proud of the Gulf Coast Woman team for taking the #WhyWaitTillJanuary challenge because so many others have joined us and are seeing great results! Here are three things I learned during my challenge: 1. You must decide you will be successful from day one. If you approach losing weight as, “I’m going to try this and see how it goes,” you probably will not achieve the results you seek. Set
a realistic goal, determine a realistic strategy and be determined and focused in accomplishing it. 2. If you want to lose weight, start with a program that assists in consistently losing 2-3 pounds weekly. A high-protein plan without intense workouts (this will make you hungry! Stick to walking) will kick-start your plan and help you quickly get to your goal. Work with a dietitian/nutritionist on meal planning. Then transition to real workouts with a trainer to hold you accountable. 3. Understand the science behind weight loss. Many people hop from one weight loss pill to the next greatest diet thing. The result? Frustration and apathy. Choose something that is proven to be effective! The body draws on carbs, muscle and fat to meet its metabolic needs. Your body pulls from your carbohydrate reserve fi st and then burns muscle and fat. I learned all of this from my Garden Park dietitian Joanna Cvitanovich. She is knowledgeable, encouraging and realistic.
AISA TEMPLETON >>> CHANGE ISN’T EASY About a month into the Healthier Me Challenge, I hit a weight-loss plateau. My response was to work out harder, longer and more frequently. But instead of losing weight, my 45-year old body rebelled and I tore my right hip fle or and strained my quadriceps. To say the least, this was a setback. Radical Alterations, my personal training gym, specializes in small group training but my injuries necessitated a completely different workout routine from the rest of my small training group. So, Nolan Halliburton, my trainer there, suggested that I try individualized personal training. It was hard to leave Radical Alterations. After four years of training with the same group, it was hard to leave them and my trainer, who had helped me overcome and achieve so much. But the hard decision was defin tely the right one: my new trainer, Don Sykes of Fitness 1 On 1 90
broke my plateau in just three weeks. Here are three lessons I learned: 1. Train smarter not harder. 2. Your body adapts to routine — you have to keep challenging it (even if it means leaving behind what is comfortable and familiar). 3. You must get proper rest and decrease stress. During my monthly medical weight-loss consultation with Dr. Delphine Shannon of Health Fit MD Wellness & Aesthetics, I was told in no uncertain terms that unless I increased my sleep and reduced my stress levels, my body will continuously fi ht my efforts to lose weight. Learning yoga at The Yoga Center has been the best coping mechanism for both stress control and for winding down at night. Change isn’t easy, but nothing worth having comes easily.

Mardi Gras makeup is all about
PURPLE, GREEN & GOLD by Jackie Merlau Jmerlaumakeup.com Since 1872, Mardi Gras has been crowned with a purple, green and gold color palette, and each one has signifi ance: purple represents justice, green represents faith and gold represents power. From festive parades to the extravagant balls, this is an engaging time to showcase these colors and don plenty of glitter. PURPLE Th s color is complementary to both green and gold, so don’t be afraid to mix it up in multiple ways! If you want to make a subtle statement, use purple eyeliner and create a soft ing on your top lid or smudge a soft it of purple on your lower lash line. Purple also creates the best smoky eye for various occasions. If you want to add a bit more glam, put down the brown and choose purple! Don’t be afraid to grab red as a lip color as it is very complementary to purples. GREEN Now is a great time to throw a curveball in your makeup routine! Not only is green a fitting color for the season, it has also been chosen as the pantone color of the year according to pantone.com. Just like purple, you can grab green eyeliner and use it in various ways. However, a soft w sh of green shadow all over the lid and slightly 96
buffed into the crease can be very gorgeous and bright. Green on the eyes will pair nicely with purple on the lips! GOLD Gold is always trending! Th s is a color that will pair well with almost anything, but specifi ally purple and green. Try popping a gold right on the center of your lid, either paired with the purple smoky eye or on top of the wash of green. I even love using iridescent gold in the inner corner of the eye. Th s technique will instantly brighten your eyes! GLITTER It is not a necessity to only focus on the Mardi Gras color scheme alone. Glitter is big this time of year and comes in many shades. I love popping glitter onto the center of the eyelid or even using glitter as a liner on the lower lash line. Be sure to do your eye makeup fi st and then your foundation and concealer, as you will get glitter fall out! Setting sprays mixed with loose glitters, as well as a soft ab of ChapStick or a mixing liquid, are all great ways to get glitter to stick and stay put! Also, don’t be afraid to try glitter on your lips! Remember to make sure if you are using glitter on your eyes or lips, get a glitter that is appropriate and safe for these areas of the face.

Wardrobe matchmaker story and photos by Ellis Anderson
Every woman’s closet contains a wardrobe BFF. It might be a tunic, a dress, a pair of pants or a jacket. While it’s made of fabric like the other items hanging alongside, it’s a cut above in quality. It’s a trusted friend, too. Whenever you wear it, you know you’ll turn heads and get compliments from strangers. Best of all, you can be yourself in this clothing. Clothes like this are very hard to fi d … that is, unless you know about California Drawstrings. On the Gulf Coast, it’s source central for wardrobe favorites. Year-round, the racks are packed with potential new BFFs, all with the right stuff — comfort, quality and distinctive style. There are three California Drawstrings stores on the Gulf Coast. The one in Bay St. Louis is located at 216 Main Street and has become an Old Town anchor. The original mother ship location is in the New Orleans French Quarter and there’s an outlet store too — California Drawstrings Last Call — in the heart of Covington, Louisiana. Owner Linda Keenan opened the original French Quarter location 30 years ago. While styles have changed in three decades, the criteria that she applies when stocking her shops has not. “I look for comfortable clothes that are extremely well
made,” Linda says. “I also look for outstanding design that sets you apart so you don’t blend into the wall. Sometimes it’s all in the cut of a garment and the drape of a good fabric. The design may be deceptively simple and then someone tries it on and goes, ‘Wow! I look great in this!’” California Drawstrings carries a complete range of sizes, from extra small to plus. Whenever possible, Linda chooses brands that are made in the U.S.

SUCCESS

3 things to go farther, faster
Are you a leader in your business? If you’re like most business leaders, you’ve reached your position because you were very good at making the doughnuts (performing the actual “work” of the business). For example, most great legal fi ms are run by great lawyers. Most of the best accounting practices are run by excellent CPAs. Most great marketing agencies are run by great marketers. Th s is good since the passion needed to excel in your fi ld is necessary when starting a business in that fi ld. However, passion alone doesn’t guarantee success. You also need business skills. Fourteen years ago, I started a technology service company. My partners and I were the best technical minds in the area, but our lack of business skills hampered our early growth. Starting and running six businesses over the past two decades has taught me that three things can help your business go farther, faster: a business coach, an operating system and a peer group.
THE COACH Your business needs a coach for the same reason a professional sports team needs a coach. Some of these reasons are: instruction/guidance/experience; accountability; sounding board for ideas; an outsider’s perspective; and help you grow by getting you outside your comfort zone. THE OPERATING SYSTEM Like a computer, your business runs on an operating system. Th s system is the method you or your management team uses to run the day-to-day operations. If you’re like most businesses, this “system” isn’t well documented or even well thought out. Worse, your staff embers may not even be aware of how or why the system works. Some benefits of a good operating system: intentional, predictable growth; communication rhythm to keep your company on the same page; processes to solve problems and develop your people; scorecard to measure your team’s progress; vision, values, focus, health and traction. For more information on the best operating system I’ve found, visit www.RyanGiles.com. THE PEER GROUP A peer group can be local, regional or national, and is usually, but not always comprised of similar businesses in the same industry. I’ve successfully been a part of peer groups with focuses on CEO/leadership skills, marketing, sales, and fi ance. Here are a few of the many benefits a peer group can offer: group purchasing discounts; industry best-practices and fi ancial benchmarking; accountability; and networking.

Learn from your favorite millionaire
How can you become a millionaire if you have never met one? Certainly, it is possible, but it is great to learn from people who have achieved what you want to achieve. I don’t know about you, but I would LOVE to be a millionaire … a billionaire even! I had a great opportunity to speak at by Stephanie and attend the Billionaire Roundtable Barnes in Las Vegas last year as part of the Fabulous 5 Speaking Tour hosted by Women of Wealth Magazine. I got to hear wisdom from the fi st African-American billionaire, Janice Bryant Howroyd; J. Martin Alexander, CEO of FUBU; Dr. Jeffery Magee, best-selling author; and Real Estate Mogul, Eric Forest. It was a great opportunity to be up close and personal with people who have achieved great accomplishments in their industries. Being there was not only a treat, but a great example of how important it is to develop strategies for your personal success by learning from the best. Anybody can meet a millionaire, or whatever your dream position is! We are incredibly blessed to have access to the lives and experiences of successful people every day. There are three major ways you can “meet” and learn from your favorite millionaire!
G
“company” during a long drive. It is incredibly important to make effici t use of your time to learn as much as you can. PRIVATE ACCESS EVENTS Now you may never bid on the annual charity lunch with Warren Buffett — it went for $3,456,789 this year — but, you can get access to many private access events where millionaires are invited to speak on panels and do live interviews. Some of the more intimate settings may have exclusive access, but if you build networks with the people and organizations that host events featuring your favorite person of interest, you can learn how to gain access. You can begin by searching event websites, such as Eventbrite, under the appearances or networking section and fi d out who is being hosted in your city. Don’t be afraid to travel to other cities where events are held. Ultimately, success is based on who you know — or who you know about. Be creative in gaining access to your virtual mentors.

Meet Adele Lyons, Chamber’s new CEO Adele Lyons sees a challenge and is unafraid to step up to tackle it. She served as executive director of the Gulf Coast Business Technology Center, now the Innovation Center, for 15 years, then worked four years as program director of the Knight Foundation. Passionate about serving her community, she next led Habitat for Humanity for six years. And most recently, she stepped into another role serving the community, as chief executive officer f the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber. Gulf Coast Woman asked her to share about her vision for her new job and her aspirations for her life.
HER ROLE
WHAT SHE WANTS PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT HER
“I have high expectations of my friends, family and co-workers. I fi d that if you expect a lot from people, they will usually deliver. People can always do more and be better than they think they can. I have found that theory to work for me so that I always want to deliver more than people expect.”
Adele Lyons, right, with former CEO Kimberly Nastasi at a September reception honoring Nastasi’s contributions to the Chamber.
“I will lead the organization with strategic direction and vision, working side by side with the Board of Directors and the over 950 members who represent over 50,000 employees.”
HER 2017 VISION
“My vision is to take the Coast Chamber to the next level for educational programs as well as events and activities. When the Coast Chamber became accredited in 2014, the Chamber received four out of five stars. I am shooting for that fi h star during the re-accreditation process.”
WHAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT HER
“Most people don’t know I have a collection of interesting purses. Most recently I bought a purse at the Library of Congress made out of old books and I received a gift f a purse that looks like a popcorn box.”
BALANCING CAREER AND FAMILY
“I fi d I am much better now in balancing work, volunteering in the community and spending time with my friends and family. I just have learned not to take on too much.”
WHAT MOTIVATES HER TO SUCCEED
“My motivation to succeed is internal. I want to know I have done the best I could at any task I tackle.”

New year, new home by Billie Comeaux When it comes to home decor, a new year is an invitation to start over with a fresh palette for any room in your house that needs a little pop of inspiration. Keep these tips in mind: •
• • •
If you decorate frequently, keep your base neutral. Th s allows you to transform your decor using contrasting vivid colors, which adds a dramatic intensity. Large rugs pull a room together. Try layering a patterned rug over a larger rug for an exciting design. Mixing patterns and textures is a key element in creating an interesting palette. Using lamps, pillows and throws add the extra pop and dimension needed to complete your room decor.

Homing instinct
Third generation family follows pull to BSL story and photos by Ellis Anderson
Bill Stakelum is the third generation of his New Orleans family to have a weekend cottage in Bay St. Louis, but the new cottage on St. John is no longer just a getaway, it’s become a full-time home. It’s called a homing instinct. Lots of animals have it. Some inner compass compels salmon to return to the stream of their birth, and birds to navigate thousands of miles without a map. Each year, millions of butterflies ake fli ht across the vast Gulf of Mexico driven by the same mysterious guidance system. If scientists want to research the homing instinct in humans, a team should come to Bay St. Louis. It’s a notoriously hard place for people to leave, and if they do, there’s often a strong desire to return. Bill is a perfect example. His grandparents owned a cottage 116

on Leonhard Avenue (in the town’s Cedar Point section) and his parents had a house on Wolfe Street, bordering a canal. Both of these houses were second homes, places to escape the pressures and heat of New Orleans — retreats where laughter and relaxation ruled. His grandparent’s house was fl oded in Camille in 1969, and the aging couple eventually bid it farewell. Bill’s parents sold their house on Wolfe Street a few years after that. Although Bill has spent most of his life in New Orleans working as a convention manager for large hotels, he never stopped dreaming of a return. Finally, in 2005, he began shopping for a home of his own. He found one that seemed perfect, but Hurricane Katrina permanently interrupted the sale. Even then, the Bay kept pulling him back, yet he couldn’t fi d anything that seemed “right.” At one point, he actually made an attempt to buy his grandparents old house on Leonhard Avenue. It had been built in the 1870s and the historic gem was still salvageable even after heavy damage from Katrina. However, it was outside the Bay’s Historic District and lacked any protection or oversight. Before a deal could be struck, the owners bulldozed the irreplaceable community asset.

RELATIONSHIPS
Unique ways to say ‘I love you’ by Dana Sleger Ladies, with Valentine’s Day around the corner, it’s time to start exploring creative ways to let that special guy know you care. Check out this list of unique ways to celebrate your beloved. 1. We all know the saying, “A way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Well, there’s a reason these words are so popular: it’s true! What’s his favorite meal? His favorite dessert? His favorite restaurant? Start making that grocery list or call in that reservation and plan a superb feast. 2. A coupon book full of redeemable IOU’s is sure to pique his interest, especially if your man can cash in on some fli tatious fun. 3. In the South, sports reign supreme, so there’s a good chance he has a favorite college and/or pro team. If a stadium or arena visit to see the action up close is out of your price range or not available, opt for some team memorabilia he can add to the man cave or offi . 4. If he’s a music lover, check out local and regional concert listings and see what tickets you can snag for a surprise night of entertainment. 5. What’s his favorite hobby? Golf, fishing, hunting? Arrange a day where your man can hang out with the guys or savor some solo time, and then have a little “something, something” planned when he gets home to celebrate him. 6. Have the kids stay with a relative or friend and create a magical date night at home. Grab a bottle of wine and his favorite movie (yes, endure it even if you don’t like it), or put on some music and light
120
some candles — either way, let romance take its course. 7. If stepping out of a place of familiarity would be better, perhaps a staycation in a nice local hotel or an out-of-town getaway may be just what the love doctor ordered. 8. Now, if you really want to catch your husband’s attention, consider presenting him with a boudoir photo album that spotlights your beautiful essence in a more risqué, yet elegant and tasteful manner. Find a good and reputable photographer on the Coast who specializes in these kinds of fun photo shoot sessions that lets your inner wild side shine for your man’s eyes only! 9. Create an “I appreciate you” book. Write your hubs, boyfriend or fiancée a letter that tells him why he means so much to you. If you share a family together, have the kids participate and write a letter as well. And don’t forget the family pet either! If his dog or cat is a treasured sidekick, lend your voice and write a letter or sign a card on behalf of his buddy. 10. Learn his love language. Whether it’s words of affirmation, quality time, gifts r something else, do some heart research and fi d out what actions speak volumes of “I love you” to your beloved. You already have a headstart with this list!

CHARRED
Premier steak and oyster bar opens in Ocean Springs by Chris Dearman
With outstanding cuisine and a cozy atmosphere, Charred is the perfect venue for fresh steaks, delightful oysters and much more. Restaurateur Jourdan Nicaud’s newest project originally opened in August as Soigne, a fi e dining restaurant, but after some good feedback from the community, it was rebranded into a more casual steak and oyster bar. By reducing the prices, yet keeping the same quality of ingredients, Charred is now poised to become one of the premier restaurants on the Gulf Coast. “We listened to the people of Ocean Springs, as we really wanted to cater to what they wanted,” says General Manager Todd Williams. “We wanted to make a warm and inviting place with our head chef Milton Joachim to make his food and talent more accessible to the general public.” Upon entering Charred, fresh ingredients are already on display with local oysters being shucked right in front of you. Moving on to the parlor, there is a large lifelike tree in the center that was made by Disney Imagineers, which creates the perfect atmosphere to spend an intimate evening with someone special or celebrate with a gathering of friends. Whether you decide to eat in the parlor, the chandelier dining room, or the outdoor dining area, Chef Joachim, promises a meal customers won’t forget, especially since his culinary background includes working at New Orleans standouts such as Commander’s Palace, Stella, and Gautreau’s. You will want to start with the oysters, which are brought in fresh daily. In addition to raw, Charred offers 124
four different varieties that can be ordered as a combo platter: Chargrilled, Sweet & Spicy, Rockefeller and Bacon & Bleu. The tasty Chargrilled oysters consist of garlic butter and fresh grated parmesan, while the Sweet & Spicy made with a Sriracha-based secret sauce will leave your mouth with a pleasant kick after a sweet beginning. The traditional Rockefeller are especially good since it’s made with house-braised spinach and not a cream topping that can overwhelm the oyster. My personal favorite was the Bacon & Bleu, which were some of the best I’ve ever had. You wouldn’t think blue cheese would go well with an oyster, but when paired with cuts of famous Benton’s Tennessee bacon, they are absolutely divine. After waking up your palate with savory oysters, take a look at the chalkboard for daily specials and dinner features. Some dishes you may fi d include Redfish & Grits or Trout Almondine, as well as creative soups and salads whipped up by Chef Joachim using ingredients straight from the docks or even fish he caught himself. As far as steaks are concerned, the talk around town is that this is the place to go. Cut to order from Chicago, the 28-day, dry-aged filets and ribeyes are pan seared at 800 degrees. I opted for the small filet topped with a red wine demi that came with Creole mustard mashed potatoes and seared Brussel sprouts. The mouth-watering steak was cooked to perfection, and the expertly prepared Brussel sprouts are good enough to be a meal on its own. While I didn’t have the opportunity to try it fi sthand, customers also rave about the Charred Burger, which is made from ribeye cuttings topped with aged cheddar

cheese and hickory smoked country bacon jam. If brunch is your forte, be sure to check out Charred’s Sunday Champagne Brunch where you will fi d popular dishes such as Chicken & Waffles — uttermilk fried chicken served over a sweet potato waffle opped with a pepper jelly glaze. Another brunch favorite is Shrimp & Grits: Gulf shrimp sautéed with diced bacon and hot sauce, served over stone ground grits topped with smoked gouda. “The shrimp and grits are amazing,” says Nyra Billings, server at Charred. “I do consider myself a fi e lady, but I will lick the bowl!” Each entrée comes with a complimentary glass of champagne and you can also order seasonal mimosas such as the white cranberry, lemon mint, pineapple or almond varieties. The restaurant also features a vibrant wine offering with selections chosen to perfectly complement any entrée. For those who like to end a meal on a sweet note, save room for one of Charred’s made-in-house desserts. Besides the changing specials, you will want to try the delectable southern banana bread pudding, or a slice of lemon or apple icebox pie. “We worked really hard to try and make this place something Ocean Springs can appreciate, and that everyone will love and enjoy,” Williams says. “It’s upscale, but it’s relatable. I want guests to come and have a relaxing time, enjoy themselves with the people they’re with, and experience good southern Creole cooking.”

HOMING INSTINCT continued Th ee years ago, Bill found a lot on St. John Street that fit the bill. He decided to call in an offer, but couldn’t fi d the time until the end of business day. When he reached the realtor, he learned it’d been sold earlier that afternoon. Bill continued shopping in the Bay, but he would drive by the lot on St. John on occasion to see what was transpiring. It turned out that the lot was part of a small infill development that local builder Terry Stoltz was creating. One day, they chanced to meet at the site and began discussing the possibilities of Terry building a house specifi ally for Bill. It turns out Bill discovered that he and Terry shared very similar values and sense of aesthetics. During the building process, Bill had a few must-haves: a walk-in shower in the master bath; a large, open fl or plan, encompassing living/dining/kitchen; a picket fence and a porch swing; front porch steps that were exact copies of the one at the Mockingbird Café; and an enclosed sleeping porch. “My grandparents’ house had porches on three sides,” Bill says. “One of them had big windows, lap siding and partial walls. I wanted a room to look like that, to have that feel.” The colors of the St. John Street house also became a major consideration. “Terry and I painted swatches of colors all over the house before I made the fi al decision. We wanted it to be a fun place,” he says. “So while we started out with a ‘Beach Casual’ theme, we ended up with ‘Beach Accidently Meets Uptown.’” The orange doorway of the new cottage pays a bright tribute to the Wolfe Street house. “My mom was very creative. She designed the inside of
that house to be like the popular restaurant Bali High in New Orleans.” The sleeping porch of the new house has become Bill’s favorite room. The windows are different sizes, exposed rafters cross a bead-board ceiling and the fl or is made from porch decking. Almost every piece of furnishing, painting or decorative object in the house has a family connection. Bill says that his family spent the summers at the Wolfe Street house, with Bill’s dad commuting into New Orleans each day on the train. Bill’s idyllic days were spent crabbing, fishing, and making trips into “town” with his Mom to pick up mail from the post office nd fresh bread from Bobbye Ann’s bakery. But these days, he’s making new memories.

COAST CARES
Women’s Center celebrates 40 years, changes
Twenty people are physically abused by an intimate partner every minute in the United States. In 2015 alone, the Gulf Coast Women’s Center for Nonviolence provided 25,890 nights of service and 49,283 meals to 2,840 victims of violence in South Mississippi. The Gulf Coast Women’s Center for Nonviolence has been serving victims of by Sandra domestic violence since 1977. As the agency Morrison has grown in size and reach over the years, so have our services, which not only meet the physical needs of the Coast’s diverse populations suffering abuse, but also their emotional, legal and fi ancial needs. Th s is why we’re celebrating the center’s 40th anniversary in 2017 by dropping “Women’s” from our name and formally embracing the inclusion that has always been part of our mission to serve victims across all racial, social, ethnic, religious and economic groups regardless of age, sex or lifestyle. As the Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence, we hope to raise awareness in our community about the victims we continue to serve and the programs available to meet their needs.
