TIME TO GO
GREEN!
As luck would have it, the parades just keep on coming on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. After all the Mardi Gras parades, be sure to enjoy all the merriment and tradition of the Hibernia Marching Society Parade, set for March 11 starting at 2 p.m. in Biloxi. Th s year’s colleen is Alexandra Waldrop, daughter of Terry and Stacey Waldrop, and the grand marshal is Rep. Scott DeLano, District 117, Harrison County. Waldrop teaches special education at West Elementary in Gulfport. Her grandparents are Jack and Annette Hughes Williams and Jerry and Barbara Elliott Waldrop. Alexandra’s Irish heritage includes her paternal great-great-grandfather, William Elliott, who descended from a Scot-Irish border clan in Northern Ireland. The Elliott family migrated to the United States and settled in western North Carolina. Alexandra’s maternal great-great-greatgrandfather, Ivy Coker, is a descendant of the County Cork, Ireland immigrants. The colleen for the annual Irish Heritage Season must embody Irish charm and femininity and is in co-charge with the grand marshal of Irish tradition. DeLano, the son of Don and Barbara 10

Superwoman’s passion to give to others powers her work and home life
Realtor. Builder. Restaurateur. Entrepreneur. Mom. Superwoman? She just might me. “Sometimes she’s got a baby on one hip, typing a real estate contract with her right hand and talking to a PJ’s Coffee employee about a food order on the speaker phone. It just stresses me out. I have to walk away,” says Davi’s husband, Rick Camera. They have two young children, Mia Sophia, almost 3, and Cristiano Ricardo, 11 months; own a host of businesses; and see giving to others as part of their lifestyle. Attorney and friend Sen. Sean Tindell says, “Some people say you can’t have it all. Jennifer proves those people wrong every day. She balances her life with multiple successful businesses, raising two amazing children, and loving life with friends and family. She is a great role model
2/16/17 5:20 PM
making house for all of us.” Davi says cooking and serving a home-cooked meal to her family is very important to her. “My mother always says a family that eats together stays together so my favorite part of my house is my kitchen, and maybe my dining room Jennifer Davi and husband, because that’s where we all sit Rick Camerena to eat together! Cooking/serving a home-cooked meal to my family is one of the most nurturing things that I can do for my family.” Operating multiple businesses, volunteering, taking care of her family — how does she do it all? “Everyone out there is juggling work with raising kids and taking care of the house,” Davi says. “How can you not feel like Superwoman. We are sooo powerful; we are all so strong and we can accomplish all things. When we are sick and weak, we just keep plowing through each day without stopping. The main thing is to not give up and to pray hard. I repeat, pray hard!” Instead of dialing back, Davi is moving forward with more projects that make a difference in the lives of others. Because of her love for children, especially those who are suffering, it makes sense that her company, Sapphire Homes, would build this year’s St. Jude Home (valued at $430,000), which will be raffled off o raise money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Davi, 40, has been a licensed real estate agent for 10 years, working with Owen & Co., Gulfport. She owns PJs Coffee, downtown Gulfport; co-owns The Reef Restaurant and Baja Beach Pelican Wharf restaurants on the beach in Biloxi; Kelly’s Sports Pub in downtown Gulfport; and Storage City, a facility located in D’Iberville. One would expect Davi to be laser-focused and have a driven personality — she is described as an astute businesswoman, but others quickly turn to talking about her heart. Broker Sherry Owen of Owen & Co. says Davi has a very good business mind and a “heart of gold. It’s how she treats people. People want to work with her. She’s just amazing.” Business partner/restaurateur Rob Stinson adds, “Her genuineness coupled with her intelligence and good nature make her successful in all her endeavors. Also, on a personal note, she thinks of and would do anything for others.” Davi and her husband have made a marked impact on many on the Coast and are also transforming the landscape of the coastline and downtown Gulfport. In addition to building the restaurants on the beach, they have constructed 26 homes on the beach and restored six 26
home
commercial buildings in downtown Gulfport. Camerena says as a fi efi hter he could not afford property in California but saw an opportunity to purchase properties at affordable prices in Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana. Davi and Camerena are very proud of their efforts to build Gold Key Fortifi d beachfront homes that keep insurance rates in check. These fortifi d homes save homeowners more than 60 percent on insurance for wind, fi e and fl od, Davi says. Whatever Davi gets involved in she brings to it a great degree of passion. “The reason I became a Realtor is because I enjoy helping people and problem-solving,” she says. “I am passionate about volunteering and helping children — giving them joy and making them laugh! For 12 years, I have volunteered at the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation every June at a camp in Sanger, California.” But where does such a passionate heart draw strength and courage? Davi says, “I strongly believe that every single success, everything and anything that we are given in life is from only one, and that’s Jesus. I never thought that I was going to be able to have any children. After four long years of trying and just when we were so discouraged, it’s only when we gave up trying and stopped trying to control it ourselves that we found out I was pregnant at the age of 37. My greatest success, pure joy and gift in y life is to be a mom to my sweet daughter and my son.”

7 SELLER TIPS HOW TO SELL FASTER, AND FOR MORE MONEY, IN 2017 Courtesy of: Sherry L. Owen, Broker/Owner 228-760-2815 | OwenSherryL@aol.com | www.owenandco.com These great tips can help you get the results you want: to sell your home for the most money in the least amount of time. 1: STAGE YOUR HOME SO BUYERS ARE READY TO MOVE IN Buyers will have an emotional response of some kind when they see your home for the first time. The feeling you want to leave them with is, “This could be my home.” Achieve this by making your home’s exterior stand out, and by staging the interior. 2: PRICE IT RIGHT owen If you’re planning to price your property high and bringand downoc your price gradually, think again. Homes receive four times the traffic in the first two weeks after listing, so a property lagging on the market can be a red flag to today’s buyers. Think about the eager buyers who will see your home in “Just listed” ads across the web and in email alerts, and offer them a fair price right away. The feeling of getting early showings or an offer will far outweigh the feeling of an offer that comes after you’ve lowered your price a month later. To make sure you price your home right, obtain a comparative market analysis of recently sold properties relevant to your home’s size, location and condition. Together, you and your agent will work to find a price that matches the local norm, while taking into account your home’s individual features and upgrades. 3: DON’T OVER UPGRADE Many large, expensive remodeling projects simply don’t pay off when you sell your home, so remodeling a whole room is just not worth the time and money. Instead, complete small, inexpensive updates that will help you get top dollar for your home. Paint boldly colored walls to a more neutral palette, and paint over any scuff marks on white walls. Instead of buying new kitchen appliances, consider painting the cabinets white, and add modern cabinet hardware and light fixtures. Rather than replacing your avocado green toilet and sink, go stark white on all walls and add a funky vintage vibe with your shower curtain and bathroom artwork. 4: BE READY FOR A SHOWING AT ANY TIME Today’s buyers are excited and competitive. They may be willing to drop everything in order to see your home the minute it comes across their screen. Here’s how to stay ready:
• Clean your home after every meal and between laundry days. Don’t leave for work, or even a quick trip to the store, without making sure your home could be toured before you return. • Add a lockbox to your front door, so buyers’ agents can come into the home even when your agent is not available for a showing. • Ask your agent to hold a “broker tour,” which allows Realtors to preview your property before bringing their client through your home. If an agent returns with their client, your home likely has the basic features the buyer is looking for. 5: DON’T FORGET YOUR NEIGHBORS Your neighbors want good neighbors—and they may also know someone who wants to live in the neighborhood. By getting your neighbors involved in your sale, you may save time. Make sure you or your agent invites your neighbors to any open houses you hold, and use social media posts to mention that your home is being listed. Every time you mention your home sale to a neighbor, whether it be online or offline, remember to ask if they know anyone who may be interested. You’ll be amazed at how quickly the word spreads! 6: BE READY TO SWEETEN THE DEAL Across the country, most sellers are at an advantage in the market. But if your home isn’t quite modern enough, or isn’t as nice as the one down the road, you may have to sweeten the pot by paying closing costs, a buyer’s home warranty, or even just getting a pre-sale home inspection so buyers are confident in your home’s ability to sell as-is. 7: MAKE SURE YOU TRUST YOUR AGENT Selecting the right agent is extremely important. You should hire an agent who has not only had great success in working with local sellers, but who also matches your style of communication. Ask your agent what makes them the right fit for selling your home, and have them walk you through the process of pricing your home before signing a listing agreement. Once you sign the contract, trust your agent to advocate for you in the market, and to negotiate on your behalf with potential buyers and their agent representatives.

Local realtor/broker Holly Lemoine-Raymond helps a couple find their Bay St. Louis dream home in HGTV’s “Beachfront Bargain Hunt.” The show airs again at 4:30 p.m. on March 10.
HGTV celeb
by Ellis Anderson bslshoofly.co When locals gathered in February to watch an episode of HGTV’s “Beachfront Bargain Hunt,” they were not just celebrating the beauty of Bay St. Louis being broadcast to millions of viewers. They also were celebrating local favorite Holly Lemoine-Raymond. During the episode, Lemoine-Raymond, a Realtor/broker, guides her clients — and HGTV viewers — through the Bay. Clients Brent and Tracy, a couple who live in a suburb of New Orleans, have been visiting the Bay for years and are fi ally ready to purchase their dream getaway home. Lemoine-Raymond helps the couple whittle their choices down to three properties, along with introducing them to Bay St. Louis. For most watching, it will likely be the fi st time they’ve heard of the town. Lemoine-Raymond says HGTV fi st approached her for another type of show in 2014. At the time, she was owner of the Cypress Café and beginning to launch her real estate career. She eventually sold the restaurant and opened her own real estate fi m, HL Raymond Properties, LLC. “They called me right after I opened my new office i December 2015,” she says. “I went through several interviews during the selection process.” Lemoine-Raymond says one aspect of the show she especially enjoyed during the production last March was seeing a different perspective of her community. “When you live here, you don’t see what a fi st-time visitor sees. It was fun being a tour guide for this area and letting people see everything we have to offer.” “Our little hidden gem is getting out there now. I feel like the show puts Bay St. Louis in a good spotlight.” www.gcwmultimedia.com

HOW SMART IS YOUR HOME?
Technology just makes life better, and when it comes to where you lay your head at night, in many cases a smart home can be a safer home. Remember the Clapper? You know… that commercial advertising the sound-activated electrical outlet switch with the iconic “clap on, clap off ” jingle? Although that was kind of nifty for the 80s, we’ve come a long way with smart home gadgets. Now, there’s a plethora of products for just about everything in your home: lighting, climate control, home entertainment, refrigeration, security systems and more! And if you’re not a techie, no worries. Smart technology is all about making life easier, not complicated. Check out these cool items that can accentuate your residence with a touch of smartness. THE FAMILY HUB REFRIGERATOR BY SAMSUNG Th s refrigerator is more than just a place to store groceries; it’s more like a refrigerator with a brain. With a Wi-Fi enabled touchscreen on the front panel, you can manage shopping lists, monitor family communication, stay on top of multi-child schedules, etc. Th ee built-in cameras also capture photos inside the refrigerator any time the door closes, which can then be accessed by your smart phone to allow better management of your food items. PETZI TREAT CAM When you’re at work or running an errand, do you ever wonder what your pet is up to back home? The Petzi Treat Cam is an app-controlled, Wi-Fi-connected remote 40
pet treat dispenser and camera that’s your pet’s new best friend…next to you being in person, of course! Not only can you see your pet from a phone or tablet, they can see and hear you. And you don’t even have to be to home to reward your buddy with a treat. SMARTCODE 916 TOUCHSCREEN ELECTRONIC DEADBOLT BY KWIKSET There is nothing more secure than knowing where you live is safe for the family. Th s touchscreen electronic deadbolt auto-locks after 30 seconds and has the ability to wirelessly communicate with security and home automation systems through encrypted technology. SKYBELL HD WI-FI VIDEO DOORBELL Th ough your phone or tablet, this unique smart video doorbell system allows you to see, hear and speak to whoever is at your door. The great thing is you don’t have to be at home to communicate and the person at the door doesn’t have to know that piece of information. NEST LEARNING THERMOSTAT (3RD GENERATION) Th s thermostat is designed to help homeowners save energy and reduce costly electric bills. According to the company, studies show this gadget saved 10 to 12 percent on heating bills and 15 percent on cooling bills. The “learning” part of this thermostat means just that: within the fi st few uses as your turn up and turn down based on when you come and go, it learns your schedule and adjusts the temperature accordingly.

DIVE IN!

On the Mississippi Gulf Coast, we have the luxury of basking in a sub-tropical climate year round, which means it’s a perfect setup to take advantage of a fabulous backyard pool designed for your needs. When it comes to design, there are a number of trends being embraced, but it’s not just about the shape. It’s more about how the ambiance of your available space can be enhanced with an overall package that combines shape, type of pool, size, unique water features, deck design, material used, and more. Cash Walker, owner of Gulf Gunite Pools in Long Beach, and Jimmy Holston, owner of Premier Pools and Spas in Gulfport, recently shared some of the most popular trends. SPECIAL FEATURES
TANNING LEDGES
Gunite pools are built with concrete and therefore allows for freeform design. One popular trend highly requested by Walker’s clients is specialized features that capture the sight and sound of water to showcase the aesthetics of the swimming pool. For example, Walker and his team have built natural rock formations for a natural waterfall look as well as installed deck jets where a pencil-sized stream shoots off into the pool. Another neat design feature includes building elevated walls where the pool wall continues on up higher than the level of the pool itself and is accented with sheer descent waterfalls.
Concerning the construction of the pool, Holston gets a lot of requests for tanning ledges and sun shelves, which are typically one step down into the water and can be anywhere from 8 to 10 inches deep in an area large enough to seat a lounger or chair that also doubles as a great area for kids to play safely.
SANITATION Holston builds custom gunite pools as well as installs onepiece fibe glass pools, and one of the biggest trends he sees is related to water sanitization treatment systems. “The saltwater systems have always been popular, but the trend is going toward ozone and UV instead of salt,” Holston says. “Salt can be corrosive to materials around the pool and a lot of people are realizing that, especially when doing higher end finishes li e travertine or granite around the pool.”
DECKING Holston also says decking is important to consider when building a pool, especially since coastal weather allows for year-round outdoor entertainment. Trends lean toward brick and also travertine pavers due to the variety of colors, textures and patterns available. “Years ago it was about putting a pool in and just pouring some concrete around it, but it looked like a driveway around the pool with unfinished oncrete,” Holston says. “Now people are more concerned about what the deck looks like because they are starting to view their pools as more of an outdoor entertainment area than just a swimming pool.”
GEOMETRIC SHAPES When it comes to shape, Holston’s customers are moving in the direction of geometric rectangular shape pools — a classic and clean look embracing contemporary straight lines.

who inspires & informs our home decor locally?
the Coast tastemakers
B O
Gail Majure, Adrienne Elliott, Ashley Grant and Yuki Northington are four of the top style guides on the Coast. Who are they and what can we learn from them? They shared with us recently. GAIL MAJURE Best way to describe my design style. Timeless classics combined to create a beautiful yet comfortable space that is truly welcoming. What makes someone know that it is a Gail Majure design? The way that I would hope someone would recognize a Gail Majure design would be simply that it is a timeless design beautifully pulled together. I don’t want my work to always look the same so that it would be recognized in that way or refl ct a certain style or look. Every project is different to me. I strive to make sure that someone’s home feels like their own and refl cts their own personal style. Tell us about a project that you have worked on that you are particularly proud of. One project that I am particularly proud of is a home that I was able to help a client build and furnish from ground up down to the sheets and towels. Fast forward a few years and I was asked again to help furnish the home for new owners, taking a completely different approach. YUKI NORTHINGTON

What is your best design advice to someone looking to update their home? Seek professional guidance if you are unsure of your own ability to create a cohesive and beautiful space. It is so much wiser to invest in a trained professional than to make the same costly mistakes. Then ... be willing to follow their advice.
Describe your design style. I would describe my design style as classic with a creative flair. I am always looking at the newest products and trying to use them in unique ways. What is your hallmark? I’d have to say that it is the curved line and use of color. I am not a straight line, all white kind of girl. What makes someone know that this is a Yuki Northington design? No fear of color or contrast. I am most proud of the fact that my healthcare designs feel more spa like than sterile. Tell us about a project you worked on recently that you’re proud of. The last project
that I fell in love was Brenda’s House. It is a temporary home for kids that wind up in the foster care system in Hancock County. I did the nursery in ivory and driftwood fin shes and a girls bedroom that had a canopy ceiling filled with a circus of bright-colored ribbons. What is your best design advice to someone looking to update their home? The easy answer is a fresh coat of paint. It’s OK to go with a neutral and just change out linens to refresh any space, whether it be throw pillows, bedding or window treatments. Doesn’t have to be expensive and will give any room a fresh look.

home Three years ago, Ashley Grant opened White Bungalow, a studio in a charming house in downtown Ocean Springs.
ASHLEY GRANT Describe your design style. I do not think you have to sacrifice a w rm ambiance for a clean style. My homes have this sort of understated splendor, inspiring awe, but also beckoning you to curl up in front of the fi eplace, surrounded by the ones you love. I love to say, “it’s about the textures” and the juxtaposition — dark and light, antique and modern, high and low, casual and elegant. It’s balancing these things that keep a room “alive” and exciting. What makes someone know that this is an Ashley Grant design? I never want my clients’ homes to be a testament to my business or me — rather, I want them to be admired for their craft, c mfort, functionality, and attention to detail. Tell us about a project you worked on recently that you’re proud of. I recently designed a home in Watersound, Florida, that I am particularly proud of. I was able to bring together all of my favorite aspects of a home, such as remarkable light fix ures, stately marble countertops, wood fl ors, and pops of unexpected color. What is your best design advice to someone looking to update their home? Decorate a new home? Painting and editing both go a long way. One shade darker or one small tweak can completely transform a room. It’s just about having the eye to see what to adjust. Many people hear the words “interior designer” and assume they could not afford the help. However, hiring a designer often proves to be more cost-effective, as a designer drafts a c hesive plan, allowing you to make fewer mistakes. I also try to stress to clients that not every item in a room has to be the “main character/movie star” — every good movie needs a supporting cast as well. Th s means that you don’t want every selection to scream at you. Try to start each room with one piece that knocks your socks off ( ovie star) and then add pieces that support it (supporting cast!). That one piece can be an antique, a piece of art, a rug — whatever takes YOUR breath away. 46
ADRIENNE ELLIOTT Describe your design style. My design style is comfortable, eclectic, and I love adding a vintage touch. Soft textures such as linen and cottons are defin tely favorites with a accent of a warm wood and pewter or champagne bronze metal. What is your hallmark? What makes someone know that this is an Adrienne Elliott design? Neutral and warm designs with the unexpected touch; open concept fl or plans for today’s modern family lifestyles; and mixed wood tones in each home with soft extures surrounding them. Tell us about a project you worked on recently that you’re proud of. I recently worked on a beach home project I am very proud of. It was the winner of two awards for the state of Mississippi, including the Grand Award. Our team worked to incorporate an antebellum feel on the exterior and partially on the interior while adding a modern touch. I love to test scale and push the limits with an oversized fi eplace Adrienne Elliott esigns exclusively for mantel or Elliott Homes. She and her husband, fabulous trim Brandon, started the company in 2009. She detail. stages all of our model homes, selects new What is your finishes for their Design Showroom and designs floor plans. best design advice to someone looking to update their home? A simple piece of advice would be take chances on a bold color. Always go with what your heart is drawn to and yet take that chance on an exceptional light fix ure or eye catching accent pillow. The design is in the details. Make the bones of your home traditional and most importantly comfortable. Do not feel that everything has to be a matching set. Do not push all of your furniture against the walls — create engaging and comfortable areas to live in.

Whether building or buying a new home, doing some remodeling, or changing up the interior design of your existing residence, a key factor is deciding how the space will best serve everyone living in the home. However, if you’re a homeowner and a pet owner, that means your beloved animal also should be considered when it comes to their needed space. In other words, what can you do to make your home their home too? Maureen McManus is a dog behavioral therapist and trainer with Bark Busters, an international home dog training company with a franchise located on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Maureen has visited hundreds of homes for training and has observed a variety of things that works best for animals and their owners when it comes to effective utilization of space. For people who are building a new home, it’s easier to incorporate a designated space for a pet, and one place Maureen recommends is underneath the staircase where you can place a crate in a well ventilated area. “Dogs like to be where the activity is so an open fl or plan where you can see the kitchen and living room is best because they like to see the activity, too,” she says. “They don’t like to necessarily be stashed away in a back room somewhere; they want to be with the pack.” If the staircase option doesn’t work with your fl or plan and a crate in the living room would be more of an eyesore with your décor, she has seen pet owners convert a crate into an end table next to the couch by securely adding a tabletop with skirting that doesn’t restrict airfl w. Not only does it hide the crate, the pet has a safe place to go in the event company is over or it doesn’t feel comfortable around small children. Mickie Miller, owner of Two Dogs Dancing in downtown Ocean Springs, has a wide selection of items for pets such as luxury crate mattresses and covers, plush throws, outdoor patio mats and even cool gel memory foam mattresses. The neat thing about these products is there’s no need to worry about the colors clashing with the interior design of your home. “We have all kinds of adorable things,” she says. “People can take a swatch of fabric from their home and we can match it. Some want a bed that matches the décor in the house and we have fabric samples from companies that make these really nice beds made out of micro-plush fabric that’s water resistant. It just looks fabulous!” Bowsers crate cover available at Two Dogs Dancing

Need Color Inspiration? Let us help you choose the perfect paint.
UPDATE,
re-create by Billie Comeaux
There is something very exuberant about updating colors and re-creating a room layout in your home. Transforming a space to meet your family’s needs can be challenging but very uplifting. First, identify your decorating dilemma and create a plan that fl ws well to meet your functional needs. If you have children or grandchildren, don’t forget to keep it “kid friendly.” Place books and toys in baskets for easy accessibility and clean up. If you’d like to go with the trendy industrial look, choose an array of natural colors and add accents using raw materials such as clay, concrete, cork and steel to give an abundance of warmth to your room setting. For adding bright colors to your design plan, art is a great source of inspiration. Keep in mind that 2017 is the year of the color green. The yellow-green shade has an environmental hue. Contrasting with accessories or an accent chair in a kale or citrus green can add a whimsical motif. Navy is the new black. It conveys intelligence, confidence, stability and unity. To complete your room design, adding a reclaimed wood accent or an antique will add a warm touch. Comeaux is co-owner of American Factory Direct Furniture.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT
In the early 80s, a visitor to Bay St. Louis was smitten with the historic cottage at 308 Main Street. Thirty-fi e years and one addition later, it’s the Millers’ dream home. story and photographs by Ellis Anderson
At top, Cynthia and Kent Miller at their remodeled historic cottage on Main Street in Bay St. Louis
58
Cynthia Miller fi st saw the house at 308 Main St. more than 35 years ago. She was taking a college art class with friend Michael P. Larroux and visiting his hometown of Bay St. Louis. As they drove past the striking historic cottage one day in the early 80s, Cynthia was captivated. She never dreamed that it would someday be home for her and her husband, Kent Miller. “Something would pull at me every time I’d see it after that,” says Cynthia. “But I never thought that at any time in this world we’d someday own it.” Yet, in 2014, the fi st time she and Kent toured the interior of the house, the couple was disappointed.

2/16/17 5:21 PM
The rooms were dark, the natural light blocked out. And although the house was nearly 2,000-square-feet, there was only one real bedroom. They kept shopping for their new home. The Millers were set on moving to the Coast and after owning two historic houses in New Orleans, were determined to purchase another. Yet, the ones that were available had already been renovated in ways that weren’t suitable. Finally, they returned to 308. “Cynthia asked me to look at it with fresh eyes,” says Kent. “To see the potential. I realized it really was an incredible house.” Once the Millers purchased it and started moving in, they realized that it didn’t have room for most of their furnishings. Avid entertainers, they also discovered that the living room only comfortably accommodated five or six people. And with one bedroom, they couldn’t have overnight guests. So they began working with local architect Ed Wikoff to build an addition that would not only give them more space, but create a fl w making the house more livable. Filling the rooms with natural light was one of their primary considerations in the new design. Since the Millers didn’t want to change the appearance of the original house from the street, the 1,500-squarefoot addition is cunningly tucked behind the house. An earlier addition (a small sun porch on the back) was torn off o make way for the new one, which includes a spacious and open living and dining area and a large master suite. A series of French doors opens onto a wide l-shaped screened back porch with room enough for outdoor living and dining rooms. The front two rooms of the original house were transformed into a music room/library with an adjoining guest bedroom. The original cramped kitchen will be the next project the Millers tackle — it will be expanded to include the home’s original dining room. The construction process was a positive one. The Millers say that contractors Rick Dedeaux and Ed Madden were “great to work with.” “I was really dreading the process, but it was painless,” says Cynthia. “Ed Madden has the same eye for detail that I have.” Cynthia picked out every fix ure and fin sh for the addition. “I can see it in my head,” she says. “I pick things that intrigue me and group them together. When you take chances like that, you wonder if you’re making a costly mistake, but somehow, it’ll all come together in the end.” Kent has learned through the years to trust his wife. “Whatever she’s got that tells her that it’s going to work, I don’t have,” he says, laughing. “I’m just happy to hang this or build that, whatever she thinks needs to happen.”

ALL CHALKED UP by Katie Cusick
Do you have an old piece of furniture that you just can’t or don’t want to part with — but it’s no longer working with your décor? I recommend giving decorative chalk paint by Annie Sloan a try. There is no better way to update or brighten up a piece. I, like many people, was intimidated about starting my fi st project, but once I tried Sloan’s Chalk Paint, the rest was history. There are so many different styles and fin shes that you can create using Annie Sloan products. No stripping, sanding or priming is required on most surfaces. Choosing from the 35 gorgeous colors can be the hardest part. After painting, seal your masterpiece with Chalk Paint Wax, stand back, and smile! You will wonder why it took you so long to try. then wax and put it back in position by the afternoon. Don’t skip the waxing step. Th s adds durability and protection. Just use a cotton rag, or your Annie Sloan Wax Brush, to get it into corners and crevices. The wax will be dry to the touch very quickly but take longer to harden or “cure.” The curing process can take five to 21 days, depending on ambient temperature. Chalk paint can go on more or less anything — old and new wood, metal, plastic, cement, bricks, fabric, etc. It also can be used indoors and outdoors, and it can be mixed to make your perfect color. Confessions of a house flippe by Robin Killeen The notion of buying a house in need of repair, restoring it and selling it for a profit is certainly not a new concept. Contractors, real estate agents and investors have been doing this for years. What is new is the title “house fl pper.” It has been made popular by the numerous reality shows such as “Flip Th s House,” “Fixer Upper,” “Rehab Addict” and the list goes on. Now I must confess that I am totally addicted to watching these shows myself. However, these programs make house fl pping look easy and create a false sense that anyone can “fl p” a house for a huge profit, and that is certainly possible, but not always the outcome. I have been fl pping houses now for more than four years with my daughter, Heather. Our goal is to fi d neglected houses that were once someone’s dream home and refresh, restore and make it a home again, ready for a new family. In the early stages of house fl pping, we were somewhat handy, had great ideas, were very budget-minded and loved design. However, there were many challenges mainly because of our inexperience. We learned very quickly there will always be unexpected items that need to be addressed and learned when to partner with our licensed contractor. We have all heard the phrase “location, location, location.” We look for neglected houses in safe neighborhoods and desirable school districts. Prior to making an offer on a property, we conduct a walk through then drive through the neighborhood at night and on weekends. We also go by during heavy rains to make sure the neighborhood doesn’t have drainage problems. We never buy a house without fi st having a certifi d home inspector to go through the house thoroughly. Once we have reviewed the inspection report and decide to move forward, that report becomes our punch list of things to correct fi st. Th s will ensure that when you resell the home it will pass inspection with flying colors. Flipping houses can be an expensive or a lucrative endeavor. Crawl before you run. Just remember, it’s not a glamorous, easy, get-rich quick scheme as it appears to be on TV. Let wisdom, common sense, diligence and integrity be your guides. Take pride in your completed renovation but don’t get too attached. You are in it to make a profit so don’t let emotions get in the way. Happy fl pping! 64
FLIPPER TIPS • I recommend using a spreadsheet as you walk through the prospective property, make a list of the needs that are evident and estimate the cost. Always build in an overage amount in your rehab budget for those unseen things that can arise. I typically add 10 to 20 percent on top of my estimated rehab budget based on condition and square footage of the house.
S
• When making an offer on a property, always have a maximum amount that you will pay and stick to it. Never fall in love with a house because you could make an emotional decision that may not work out well. Know your local market, recent sales, comps, and DOM (date on market). • Factor in the cash to purchase the property, closing costs, inspection costs, builder’s risk insurance, rehab costs and expenses to maintain the property while waiting for the property to sell. Other costs are yard maintenance, utilities, insurance, property taxes and in some cases HOA fees.

How to get tax info organized
Are you still stalling on filing your 2016 tax return? Is the stress building? Most people procrastinate unless they are expecting a large refund or have an easy tax return. Th ee reasons people procrastinate are disorganized records, DIY and unresolved IRS or complicated tax matters. If you fi d yourself procrastinating and you just don’t know where or how to start, I offer the following to assist you.
GET ORGANIZED Separate your documents into three broad categories — income, expenses and other. “Income” is usually supported by a W-2 or 1099 of sorts. A W-2 comes from wages where you were employed by someone else (e.g. Walmart, local diner, etc.). A 1099-Misc reports the income someone else paid to your small business. Unemployment and social security benefits, pensions, retirement income, gambling winnings, interest and dividends are reported on their own 1099 forms. Rental income and alimony may not be supported by an offi al IRS document, but nevertheless is subject to being taxed. “Expenses” are supported by third party statements, receipts, logs and contemporaneous documentations. You should have this before you complete your return. • Provided by third party: health savings contributions, student loan interest, retirement contributions, mortgage interest, charitable contributions • Supported by receipts: small business expenditures, rental property expenses, moving expenses, educator’s expenses, medical costs, real property taxes • Logs / contemporaneous docs: mileage, moving expenses, travel, alimony paid “Other” deductions or credits available to you are the higher education cost, child care expense and health care coverage. You should receive the appropriate forms from these providers. If you’ve made estimated tax payments, a copy of your canceled checks may suffi . DO IT YOURSELF As a confide t DIY, completing your own return generally means gettingsection organized and fi ding the time to complete special it. With the use of software, this makes your job somewhat sponsored by easier. However, I would offer that even though your return seems simple enough, you should still periodically have a Physical Therapy professional check orCenter even complete your return. What may seem simple and straight of Ocean Springs forward may in-fact be hard and confusing. Th s is especially true when your fi ances and TAX DEADLINE continued on page 71

The Trump Effect
There has never been so monumental a change to the political landscape as Donald J. Trump (as I’m writing this on the eve of his inauguration). The effects have to be unfolded, and there is no greater driver of fi ancial decision making like taxes. TAXES Corporation. The Trump plan lowers the business tax rate to 15 percent. The current business rate at 35 percent rate is one of the highest in the world, making domestic investment unattractive. It includes a 10 percent tax on repatriation, instantly bringing trillions of dollars back into the U.S. economy now parked overseas. Personal. Under the Trump plan, change to tax brackets in the individual income tax will be reduced from 7 to 3. Tax rates will be 12 percent, 25 percent or 33 percent, closing many tax loopholes retaining mortgage interest and charitable deduction.
So, what’s the plan? It’s a new year and retirement is closer than ever — it’s time to stop procrastinating and start saving!

ESTATE Repealing the Estate Taxes. While the estate taxes now have a single deduction over $5 million, it is unclear how much that will add to the government’s bottom line. I figu e that on inheritances the estate taxes will be replaced by capital gains taxes from a certain deduction. In with his pledge of lowering corporate taxes to the 15 percent rate, there is going to be a big return to the C corporation instead of the straight pass thru entities like the S corporation (S-Corp) and Limited Liability Corporation (LLC). Instead of being taxed at the individual rate 25 or 30 percent, the accountants and tax attorney will once again recommend the C Corporation to shield from taxes. I see many business sales occurring, increased merger activity, which to leads to economic growth initially. If Trump can balance $20 trillion in debt in six to eight years, he really is superman, but one thing I believe in is the law of unintended consequences for every action. Frankly, my dear... you’ve been scammed by Kathy Brown Van Zutphen
Legal disclaimer: This information is not considered legal advice, nor does it form an attorney-client relationship. It is merely to inform of situations that I’ve either personally encountered or became aware of through clients.
How many times has this happened to you? An urgent email pops up in your computer’s inbox and it contains your bank’s offi al logo. It informs you that your account has been compromised and you must respond with your account information and password, or else there will be some fraud or loss of your account. Seems legit, right? But wait, why is the bank notifying you of this breach when they should already have your account information? The answer is, “Frankly, my dear…you’ve been scammed!” Here are three easy tips to help you detect and avoid scams:
Turning life’s storm waters …
If
you are troubled, maybe I can help. If you are a small business needing help or considering forming a business, a family member who needs help with a loved one, or an individual who has been injured or needs help with a divorce, give me a call and I will use over 17 years of experience to help you no matter what situation you may face. I graduated from the University of Alabama in 1983, magna cum laude, and then received a Master of Arts before later proceeding to law school at the Cumberland School of Law of Samford University in Birmingham, Ala. I received my Juris Doctorate degree in 1997 and have had extensive experience since that time in corporate and insurance defense litigation, general civil litigation, as well as in the areas of Trusts, Probate, Estates, and the legal area called “Elder Law.”

THINK BEFORE YOU ACT Even with almost 20 years of experience as an attorney, I’ve almost been duped by scams. One day while I was busily working on my computer, I received an email similar to the one described above. It urged me to take immediate action to protect my bank account. Just as I began to type in my account info and hit “SEND,” something stopped me. The wheels in my mind began to spin, and I wondered, “If my bank has caught someone wrongfully accessing my account, wouldn’t the bank already have this information? So then why are they asking me to provide it?” Instead of responding to the email, I called the bank. Sure enough, the email was not sent from my bank. Instead, it was one of the many ways that fraudulent people seek to discover account information from innocent victims. Always stop to think before you act. If you do receive an email or telephone call asking for your account information, do not immediately respond. Instead, directly contact the institution in question via telephone or mail to inquire about your account status. Do not use any website links or telephone numbers provided in the email. Use contact information from your statements or an online directory. BE SKEPTICAL One day, I answered the telephone at home and was informed that I owed the IRS an outstanding amount and that, if I did not pay it, they would send agents to arrest me. Other people have shared similar stories with me, with one being from a “court” that was going to arrest someone for missing jury duty unless the “fi e” was paid. I am sure that there are many other alarming versions of this “you better pay or you will be arrested” scenario. Unless you have skipped bail, these calls are scams. Also, be wary of any emails, texts, or telephone calls stating that a relative, such as a child or grandchild, needs money or will be arrested. Trust me — if your relative needs money, they know where to fi d you. I do not practice criminal defense law, but can state that as far as I know neither IRS agents nor court representatives have the authority to arrest anyone. Police or Federal Agents do have the authority to arrest you, but they certainly do not “call ahead” to warn that they’re coming to arrest you.

TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE If it seems to be too good to be true, then it IS too good to be true. Th s includes investment schemes, sweepstakes, and any product sold in an “infomercial.” Don’t believe all of the promises stated in print advertising, “giveaways,” or television ads, especially if you have not even entered a sweepstakes drawing or someone just randomly shows up at your door or calls you on the telephone announcing that it’s your lucky day. Some groups may sell tickets for prize drawings, but in general you should not have to pay anything for something that you have “won.” Scamming the elderly is big business. Quite often, elderly people are too ashamed to admit it once they realize they’ve been the victim of a scam. I suggest, however, that everyone is vulnerable to scam artists. Instead of feeling ashamed, take back your power and help protect others by calling the Attorney General’s Office o report scams. If someone keeps calling you on the telephone, hang up and then list your telephone number on a “do not call” registry list. If someone you don’t know comes to your door trying to sell something, DO NOT let them… call the police! If they are legitimate, then they won’t mind you checking them out. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
taxes change due to retirement, divorce, death, major income increases or decreases, tax bracket change, a new child, kids move out, etc.

UNRESOLVED MATTERS If you have unresolved IRS or complicated tax matters, I highly encourage you to engage a tax professional. Tax problems don’t disintegrate; they get worse with time if left u addressed. You should begin by following the above steps to organize your information and then fi d a trusted tax professional. Some transactions are more complicated and deserve a skilled professional to ensure that there is correct reporting of the income as well as effectively taking all the deductions you are entitle to. Such transactions that need special attention include sale of real estate, like-kind exchanges, installment sales, depreciation, and sale of business property to name a few. You may not need a tax expert. You might be just right with a tax preparer; but when you do need an expert they are usually worth the investment of time and money ten-fold. Regardless who prepares your taxes, if you can’t file by April 18th, file an extension. Remember the extension does not grant you extra time to pay; so pay any taxes you may owe. If you intend to contribute to an IRA, do so by April 18.

SUCCESS
The Pumpkin Plan
“Everyone is not your customer.” — Seth Godin
I was sitting across the desk from my accountant when he asked me if I had ever fi ed a client. Of course not! Why would I fi e a client? I was working as hard as possible to grow my business and add as many new clients as possible. I thought that fi ing clients was counter-productive. I was so wrong… Late-payers, unwarranted complainers, rude communicators — we’ve all worked with clients like this. The good news is that you don’t have to. In fact, you can borrow one of my rules: No jerks allowed! Not only will your headaches decrease, but the fi st time you fi e a client who is condescending or rude towards your employees, you’ll be a hero. Begin by opening your accounting program and run a report listing all clients in order of revenue for the past 12 months. Export this as a spreadsheet and add additional column headings. Label these columns as “pays on time,” “cringefactor,” “refers clients,” “takes our advice,” or any other metric you’d like to use. Then grade each client using these metrics. For example, if Client A pays on time, refers clients to you, takes your advice, and is a pleasure to work with, they would have a score of “100” in each column. If Client X was a late payer, never referred clients or took your advice, and was constantly rude to your staff, they would have a grade of “0” in each column. Once you and your staff ave graded each client, add a fi al column that automatically averages the scores of the preceding columns.
by Ryan Giles
You will end up with “A” clients, “B” clients, and so on. Next, sort your list by grade so all of the “A” clients are at the top and the “F” clients are at the bottom of the spreadsheet. When we did this, we found that the top 15 percent of clients generated 97 percent of our total revenue. The bottom 85 percent of clients generated only 3 percent of our revenue. The “F” clients generated only 1 percent of revenue (but almost 100 percent of our problems). Guess what happened next? We politely parted ways with the “F” clients. Immediately, client satisfaction improved because we had more time to spend with our best clients. The fi al results were fewer but happier clients and happier employees. Over the next 12 months, we saw an increase in top-line revenue and bottom-line profit due to this strategy. The fi al step is to improve your sales process to weed out “F” prospects before they become clients. As an additional bonus, review your “F” clients for trends. Do your “F” clients all buy the same product from you? Can they all be tied to a single sales person? Are they in the same industry? Remember that you’re in business to make money. Profit is not evil. In fact, you can’t be philanthropic, provide jobs in your community, or continue to provide the services that your clients need if you aren’t profitable. Navigator opens student branch at ABHS
Navigator Credit Union, Mississippi’s largest state chartered credit union, and Alma Bryant High School located in Irvington, Alabama, hosted a grand opening celebration last month for a NCU branch that will serve as the school’s Financial Center for students and faculty. The modern branch includes a non-traditional teller counter to conduct banking transactions, along with a learning area for students to engage with employees to understand more about personal fi ancial management. The development of the campus branch was a natural byproduct of the collaboration between the school and the credit union. During the last five years, while the credit union has been providing fi ancial education to students, they have also been forming relationship with students, faculty and other academy partners. A team of people who work at the local NCU were 72
instrumental in bringing the project to the high school: • Lea Ivey Stone, Business Development Offic , has been visiting the school to provide fi ancial education to students • Genevieve Rigby, Academy Specialist at ABHS, had the idea for a student branch to enhance fi ancial literacy and provide employment opportunities for students • Kathy Scarbrough, Chief Communications Offic , coordinated project with Navigator and ABHS offi als • Nadine Sekul, design consultant, provided the creative direction for the one-of-a-kind, unique space NCU provides a full range of banking, investing, asset management and other fi ancial products and services. The organization serves 45,000 members from 13 locations in Mobile, Baldwin, Harrison and Jackson counties.

Who’s at your table of influence?
I always like to refl ct upon the imagery of King Arthur’s fabled round table. It is a great representation of the circle of influence in our lives. Each of us has a round table and we have people in our lives that bear great influence on us. We listen to them, we spend time with them, we work with by Dr. Stephanie them, we live with them, we go to Barnes church with them. One thing we forget, however, is that we invite them. We create our circle of influence by invitation. We sometimes forget that it is our table and we get to decide who gets a seat and who will have to sit elsewhere. A round table is both infin te but defin te. It is a circle of influence that is a continuous connection. Everyone seated is connected to each other through the people on either side of them. But a table also is defin te in that it only has so many seats. That means we should be selective and strategic about who is seated at our table. Here are the people who should be at your table: COACH Th s person helps you to be better. They share knowledge and expertise that enables you to grow. They hold you accountable for the things you say you want to achieve. They help you to move when you want to sit. CHEERLEADER Th s person makes you feel good about yourself. They encourage you and help you to remember how great you are. They bring you joy and make you laugh! IRON SHARPENER Th s person sharpens and refi es you. They may also point out — in love — where you are not being your best. They do so because they love you and they want you to be your best and not just the best you feel like doing. NORTH STAR Th s person has achieved something you aspire and they serve as a great example that can guide, shape, stretch and sharpen you. These folks need to have a seat somewhere else: HATER Th s person is unhappy and wants you to be unhappy too. They are jealous and sometimes mask envy with limited expectations expressed in sly remarks and nicenasty comments. They secretly want to achieve what you have achieved, but they lack the confide ce to try so they attempt to make you believe that you can’t either. 74
LIMITATOR Th s person is limited by their negative views and wants to box you into their narrow-focused worldview. They can’t see past their limited vision and attempt to cut your vision down to their comfort level. INVALIDATOR Th s person is just nasty. They see the world in terms of all that is wrong and not only see the glass half empty, but somebody spit in their glass too! They are hurt, so they take out their hurt on the world. SPECTATOR Th s person is just taking up space. They are just happy to be there. They do not take away from you, but they don’t add value either. But, don’t just invite people to your table or deny them a seat. Give them a reason to want to be there. Here are the things you should always serve at your table: love, openness, honesty, authenticity, reciprocity, peace, inspiration, motivation, innovation and compassionate confrontation. “Why would I invite confrontation?,” you may ask. Iron sharpens iron through friction. If you set an iron sword on a sharpening block, it will not be sharpened. The sword is not sharpened until you create friction. The sword and the block work together to refi e and improve. The friction sharpens the blade! Not only should you invite great people to your table, you should create an environment where robust dialogue is appreciated. Don’t create spectators by shutting down ideas that are different than yours or are not what you want to hear. If all you ever here is “Yes,” you have a table full of spectators! “No” is not always a bad word. It is really an invitation for negotiation, dialogue and innovation. Who is at your round table? Who is seated there? Who should be seated there? Who should be asked to leave? Whether your table is your circle of friends, team at work or community partners, you must be willing to take control of your invitation list. Make sure that you are deliberate in who is seated at your table. Sometimes you may even have to get up and start another table somewhere else! Remember, your circle of influence is by invitation only. It is an exclusive list that should be reserved only for those who will add value to your life and to whom you can add value. Many are called, but few should be chosen.

Discipline isn’t fun, but it’s necessary by Rebecca L. Ritchey
John Maxwell said, “Most people want to avoid pain, and discipline is usually painful.” Discipline is not a popular discussion. Actually, if you want to spark a debate, bring it up as a topic. There is no one way to discipline, but there are many effective methods.
BUILD RELATIONSHIPS In Dr. James Dobson’s book, “The New Dare to Discipline,” he made a great statement: “The best way to get children to do what you want is to spend time with them before disciplinary problems occur — having fun together and enjoying mutual laughter and joy. When those moments of love and closeness happen, kids are not as tempted to challenge and test the limits. Many confrontations can be avoided by building friendships with kids and thereby making them want to cooperate at home. It sure beats anger as a motivator of little ones!” As a mom, take time to build the relationship with your child as a person. OBEDIENCE IS FUN Rules are not made to be broken, but they often are broken. A friend of mine gives her children tickets when they have good attitudes, do their chores, or are making positive choices. Her children earn 25 cents for each ticket they receive, and just recently, her 7-year-old child cashed in her tickets for $27! If the children misbehave or have bad attitudes, they get a ticket taken away. She is teaching her children the fun in obedience
and the rewards of good behavior. Discipline isn’t always a negative word, it can often be associated with good.
SET STANDARDS Take time to set and communicate the standards in your home. In communication, make sure your children understand what the standard means. It is very unfair to discipline without the standard being understood. Take time to think about what is important to you and your family, then share the expectations. If using good manners is a standard you have for your family, share it. Teach your children good manners, then reward or discipline accordingly. DISCIPLINE There are many forms of discipline, but one thing is certain, discipline should always be explained and followed up with affirmation and love. There are many great resources regarding disciplining your child such as “The New Dare To Discipline” and “The Strong Willed Child” by Dr. James Dobson, and “Have A New Kid By Friday” by Dr. Leman. While discipline isn’t fun, it is necessary. You are preparing your children for a responsible adulthood by disciplining them while they are young! Ritchey is CEO of the Ritchey household, the mother of three children and wife to Jonathan. Reach her at rebeccaritchey@ ymail.com.

HEALTH
Dr. Yekaterina Karpitskaya
ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON, WIFE, MOM, ATHLETE, MILITARY VETERAN Dr. Yekaterina Karpitskaya is an impressive woman. She was born in Simferopol, Crimea, USSR (now a part of Russia), and in 1992, her family immigrated to St. Louis, Missouri, when she was 15. From graduating early as valedictorian in a class of more than 700 to serving as an officer in he Air Force to completing her medical residency at UCLA, her background has been nothing but a steady climb of success since her arrival. Dr. Karpitskaya joined Bienville Orthopaedic Specialists in 2011 after she was assigned and served four years at Keesler Air Force Base. As an orthopedic surgeon with a specialization in sports medicine, and as a longtime endurance athelete, she has fi sthand knowledge of injury and prevention. Not only does she currently serve as a team doctor for the Biloxi Shuckers, her own athletic record that is quite wow factor! Since 2005, Dr. Karpitskaya has completed 40 full marathons and countless shorter races around the country, and completed eight IRONMAN events (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, 26.2 mile run). She has garnered the title of “All World Athlete” and has received numerous awards, including being recently voted as the most outstanding female runner
What led you to the Air Force?
I felt it was a great way to show gratitude to the United States for allowing my family to start a new life here, and it was also a way to pay for medical school.
Whom do you admire and why?
I admire my father for starting from nothing in a new country. We came to the states with our clothing, our dog and $700.
What’s on you bucket list of things you’d like to do?
I would love to qualify for IRONMAN World Championships in Kona, Hawaii; seven marathons on seven continents in seven days; and go back to Crimea and tour Russian historical sites with my kids.
Dr. Yekaterina Karpitskaya is an orthopedic surgeon with a specialization in sports medicine, and as an endurance athelete, she has firsthand knowledge of injury and prevention.
of the year by the Gulf Coast Running Club. What inspired you to become an orthopedic surgeon?
When I was growing up, I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives and use my talent and intellect to help others. What better profession than medicine, especially orthopedic surgery, to accomplish that. Furthermore, I graduated from the Crimean School of Fine Arts before we came to the United States, and my art background helps me a great deal in planning surgeries and threedimensional visualization in the operating room.
You stand out because you are a female in a maledominated field. How has this challenged you?
Entering the fi ld of orthopedic surgery, male or female, you have to be
What are you passionate about?
prepared to work hard, make sacrifices, nd be resilient. I chose to fin sh my training and get a few years of practice under my belt before starting a family. My role as a provider, surgeon, wife and a mother is complex, but my supportive husband and great practice partners make it possible. Why sports medicine?
I’m passionate about being a great mom to my 5-yearold son, Lucas, and my 3-year-old daughter, Abigail, as well as being a good wife to my husband, Blaine Hunter. I’m also passionate about being the best doctor and surgeon I can be as well as qualifying for Kona and winning races.
I do general orthopedics with specialization in sports medicine. I like to work on all parts of musculoskeletal system. I perform joint replacements, knee and shoulder surgery, some hand and elbow surgery, cartilage preservation, trauma, and sports medicine. I chose sports medicine because I have always been an athlete, and being an endurance athlete, I have fi sthand knowledge of injury and prevention.
What would most people be surprised to know about you?
I have three cats, so you could call me a cat lady. I am also an undercover dork and a movie buff. I watched the original Star Wars trilogy over 27 times.
What would you say to inspire someone else who wants to break into a maledominated career area?
If you set your sights on it and work hard, anything is possible.

Top five causes of hip pain
Hip pain is a common complaint that we see in our patients every day and can affect people of all ages. Unfortunately, the differential diagnosis regarding hip pain by Daniel A. is very broad. As an adult reconstruction Wittersheim, M.D. and hip specialist, I can attest to this fi st hand. Sometimes the answers are simple, but on some occasions, they require a much more extensive workup to discover the underlying cause. Here are the five most common causes of hip pain that I see in my practice and various treatment methods for them. 1) Adductor Strain and athletic pubalgia: Th s presents as pain in the anterior aspect of the hip and groin and affects people of all ages. The underlying cause is repetitive overuse or direct injury. As people of all ages are becoming more active this is becoming more common. Typically it resolves within four to six weeks. 2) Trochanteric Bursitis: Th s presents as pain located directly on the side of the hip. It is caused by irritation of the soft issues directly above the proximal femur. It can be caused by an abnormal gait, direct injury, deconditioning and overuse irritation. 3) Sciatica and referred back pain: Presenting most commonly as pain in the posterior buttock and lateral aspect of the hip, with or without back pain. The pain can often radiate even further down the leg and cause a feeling or tingling or numbness.
4) Iliopsoas bursitis: Pain typically occurring at the groin. Usually occurs during activity and most pronounced with flexi n of the thigh. Strain and repetitive overuse are often causes. 5) Osteoarthritis: Typically affecting the older population, but can also affect patients at much younger ages. Most commonly associated with groin pain, but can also present as pain anywhere around the hip even radiating to the knee. The cause of these conditions is broad and often multifactorial. Direct injury, repetitive use, micro trauma, genetics, weight and overall physical condition can all play a role. The treatment option for all these maladies begins conservatively. A period of rest, activity modifi ation, antiinflammatory medications and stretching exercises is benefic al for the majority of patients. Professional physical therapy can also help resolve these conditions. However, if conservative treatment options fail to resolve the problem and symptoms persist, it is best to seek treatment with an orthopedist or your primary care physician, as it could be something more serious. A simple x-ray can provide a wealth of information and physician directed treatment options could more quickly relieve the symptoms and allow the patient to return to their previous level of activity.

On your mark, get set, meal plan! by Miranda Hebert
It’s that time of the year — a time to set goals and get healthy. Whether you just want to focus on health, save money, or create a less stressful week for the family, meal planning is the ticket. If you are overwhelmed with the sheer mention and thought of meal planning, here are a few helpful tips to get you started.
CREATE A PLAN Plan a day and time to go grocery shopping and prep for the following week. Personally, I do my planning on Thursdays, grocery shop on Saturdays, and prepare my meals on Sundays. With my family of five, I fi d breaking up the process makes it so much easier. Write out your menu for each meal (breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner) and make sure you include both main coarse and side items (don’t forget the veggies). Check out the food you already have on hand and look at your schedule for the upcoming week. I always love to plan Crockpot meals for hectic days/evenings. Personally, I like to plan three major meals for the week. I cook two meals on Sunday and prepare another dish that is ready to put in the Crockpot on Wednesday morning. Th s way, dinner is hot and ready when we get home from my kids’ sports activities. KEEP IT SIMPLE Create a grocery list for everything needed for the meals ahead, including seasonings. Use versatile ingredients (chicken) that you can change up to make totally different dishes. Don’t forget about the staples that can be used for healthy snacks and side items (nuts, fruit, organic carrots, cucumbers etc.). There is nothing worse than trying to prepare food, only to realize you are missing a couple of ingredients. GET ORGANIZED Try to keep all the recipes and weekly menus organized in one location. Th s will make it easier to mix and match meals if you decide to create monthly meal planning calendars in the future. There are many websites that do this for a small fee, but you can also make your own calendar on things like google calendar, where you can keep recipes in the notes section and share it with your family. BE PREPARED It’s a good idea to stock up on icepacks and insulated lunch bags. Also, meal prep containers allow you to make several days worth of meals and have it conveniently ready to eat or heat for lunch. Thermal lunch boxes can keep food hot for 6-8 hours and are easily purchased online or sometimes found at your local supermarket. Just an extra tidbit, I absolutely love mason jars for salads, overnight oatmeal and smoothies because they are the perfect size. Now you are ready! Set a meal planning date in your calendar now and get your family involved and figu e out what system works best for you. Strive for progress and not perfection, and eventually, this will become second nature. One thing I can promise you, it will be well worth the effort. #HealthierMe2017
GCW team continues successful health journey In this issue, the Gulf Coast team members share what they are learning on their health journey that kicked off ast September. If you have questions for us, just post them on our Facebook page and we’ll get right back to you. We also encourage you to share your success with others by using this hashtag: #healthierme2017.
DOROTHY WILSON >>> LOVING PHASE TWO I have come a long way and learned so much since I began my Healthier Me journey on Sept. 21, 2016. The Ideal Protein program taught me how to think differently about food. Food is to fuel your body. It is not to be used as comfort food when you’re stressed. I am in control of what I put into my body; it is not in control of me. I don’t need to eat nearly as much as I had learned to do. I can be full and content eating healthier choices. I can manage cravings by food prepping and shopping for healthier choices. Ideal Protein was the right choice for me to kick-start my journey because it helped me to be more disciplined as I transitioned. Now, I’m taking what I learned and adding to it by working out with trainer Brendan Jones of Body Axis Fitness at Anytime Fitness in D’Iberville. I chose Brendan as my trainer because he has a good track record with working one-to-one with his clients to help them change their thinking about what they can do, training them how to eat “clean” and how to work hard to transform their bodies. With Brendan, it’s not just a job; he invests a great deal of effort in helping his clients be more successful, whether with weight loss
or rehabilitation. He takes the time to modify exercises when necessary and he also will adjust his schedule if necessary to make sure you stay on track with your training. “I can’t make it today; too much work” will not work as an excuse with Brendan. I tried that once and he responded, “I can come to your office nd we can do the workout there.” I hit my 40-pound weight-loss goal in early January on Ideal Protein. Typically, you will gain about 5 pounds back as you transition to eating more carbs and sugar, but as a result of working with Brendan, not only am I toning up but I have continued to lose pounds. Total loss so far: 47 pounds! (That’s based on my scale; we’ll see what Brendan’s scale shows at my next monthly weigh-in!) If you didn’t get started on a plan in January, come join me at Brendan’s Honeybees class on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7 p.m. at Anytime Fitness. Th s is a great way to get started. I can now do multiple laps around the shopping center where Anytime is located without thinking I’ll pass out!
JENNIFER COX >>> 22 POUNDS GONE! What an incredible journey so far! I’m down 22 pounds and am feeling great. It has not happened without a challenge, but with the help of my sponsors and the motivation of family and friends I have been able to stay on track. The help of the Ketopia jumpstart program, Medi Weightloss, and Robby D’Angelo keeps me on track to make better nutrition choices, and ultimately, the lifestyle changes I needed to make to get healthy.

Dora Lutz’s STORY BEFORE MY TRANSFORMATION I retired for the second time in June 2014. My original profession was as a school teacher and my second career was in the gaming industry, and both of these careers were very active and stressful. After my retirement, I worried about what I was going to do with all of my free time. I wanted to fi d something that I could be passionate about. I didn’t have hobbies, shopping became old after a while, and traveling wasn’t something I found fun any longer. It also had been a very long time since I had been to a gym to do any kind of workout. However, I decided the best thing was to get active and to change my eating habits, especially since I thought it could reduce my doctor visits. Prior to joining the gym, I was taking five medications and would visit the doctor every three months. Since joining the gym, I am no longer on medication and only visit the doctor every six months. GOALS I will be 70 years old this July. I want to prove that age is just a number and not a state of health. Being healthy and becoming stronger is my motivation. Brendan Jones, owner of Body Axis Fitness and a personal trainer with Anytime Fitness, sets attainable goals, gives me the guidance to reach these goals and holds me accountable. Brendan also is a nutritionist and provides me with a nutrition plan geared to helping me reach my goals. He realized very quickly that I am a goal-oriented person and will give something 150 percent of my energy in hopes of reaching my goal.. WHAT I DID I keep a “little blue book” or diary of nutrition and workout plans, which I use to keep me on track when I am working on my own. Once I saw the weight begin to slowly melt away, I became obsessed with following his plans. I would work out every day until my body would become fatigued and then I would take a small break. To read Dora’s complete story about her transformation, visit gcwmultimedia.com.

GCW team continues successful health journey TORI BISHOP >>> STYLIN’ IN BLACK SUIT Diet and meal prep have been two of the most challenging things for me on this journey. My schedule is spontaneous and I’m always on the go. I have learned logging food intake is so important and another critical factor is eating enough! Sometimes I don’t eat enough which really impacts my results.
What helps is I use MyFitnessPal to log my daily food intake. My goal over the next two months is to faithfully log my food intake everyday so that I can share it in the next issue. Meanwhile, check me out in my black suit! It’s my fi st time being able to wear it in 4 or 5 years!!!
AISA TEMPLETON >>> NEVER GIVE UP! Meal prep is essential to being successful in improving your health. I know what I should eat, when it’s to be done, how often, how much — but that doesn’t translate into me making this happen. Even when I prep all of my food for the week, I struggle to stay on course when I am stressed. During these periods, I fi d myself still stress-eating refi ed carbs and sugars. So, I have discovered that my emotional strength is not nearly as strong as my physical strength and I must work just as hard or harder on the emotional part of being healthy. My team does its part by supporting me but I have to do mine — consistently. I read in a health magazine that I should remove everything from my house that was temptingly 98
unhealthy, but that really isn’t fair to the rest of my family who doesn’t have the emotional eating problem that I have, and it isn’t normal for my schoolaged children to not have a single convenience snack in the household. I even thought that perhaps being so drastic could precipitate an eating disorder in them. So, the cereals, the English muffins, whole wheat bread and (gasp!) Nutella stay in the house. Removing them doesn’t truly solve my problem anyway. My takeaway from this: Yes, I will continue to meal-prep every week, and I will continue buying whole, fresh and raw. Th s helps every part of my body and health. And eventually, I will learn how to manage stress and not allow it to manage me. NEVER GIVE UP!

BEAUTY & SHOPPING
trends for everyone
by Brenda Blount
Spring fashion Four trends are at the top of the essential list for spring fashion: Athleisure, the shirt, 80s glam and utilitarian street chic. Why should you be happy about this? Because it’s something we can all wear! ATHLEISURE Athleisure. What is Athleisure? It’s essentially workout clothes designed to take you from work to your gym, and then out to dinner or drinks. Thi k fashionable dressed up sweat pants, tops and jackets. We can blame celebrities in gym clothes for popularizing this trend, so here are four easy ways you can embrace this style: • Look for bold and bright colors against a black background • Pull look together with a fitted top or jacket • Layering is essential • Statement tees
THE SHIRT The classic shirt can be long, oversized, striped or ruffled. Everyone needs a classic white shirt. 80S GLAM I usually don’t like to look back, but aren’t we all a little nostalgic for 80s Madonna? Bring on the big hair and shiny lip gloss because it’s the 80s! Look for shiny fabrics in pants and jackets. What I really love about this look is all the color. A word of caution here: a little 80s goes a long way so don’t try the head-to-toe look.
102
UTILITARIAN STREET CHIC Th s is basically a dressed up version of your favorite khakis. Thi k warm earth tones and army green with a splash of color. JUST SAY NO Of course, there are certain looks I hope you will avoid this spring…as in, “Danger Will Robinson danger!” • Bra tops. Okay, wearing a bra as a top under a shirt or jacket makes sense if you are a rock star or if you are on a beach in Mexico. Don’t do it! • Romantic looks. So this is the “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm” look that works on pre-teen girls and teenagers. Sheer dresses and tops with delicate embroidered fl wers look great on little girls, but as an adult, it’s best to avoid this look. •
The extra large tote or handbag. Do you feel a twinge of pain in your shoulder every time you hoist your already heavy handbag over your shoulder? Don’t do it. Th s trend comes and goes, but remember the Oprah show where she asks the women to empty their purse? I know... it’s scary what we women will carry around — the bigger the handbag the more stuff. Just say no!

makeup last
Making your
by Jackie Merlau Jmerlaumakeup.com
The warmer months are ahead of us and although we welcome the season change, with that warmth comes humidity! In the South, it can be tough trying to keep your makeup looking fresh and staying intact, but don’t fret because I have some surefi e ways to keep your makeup in place all day.
PRIMER It is important to know your skin type when buying and applying makeup. Whether you are oily, dry or combination, you can better discuss your primer options with a makeup professional. The primer is applied after you moisturize and before the makeup application. Primer should be thought of as “double-sided tape” because it keeps the moisture in your skin and the makeup on longer.
SETTING POWDER Once you have applied your concealer and/or foundation, it’s always a good idea to set it with a translucent powder. A quick dusting of powder all over the face or where you tend to be most oily will help hold product longer. There is no need for “baking” the powder on your face and letting it “set.” A simple application of the proper powder will still be effective and save time during your makeup routine.
Product suggestion: MAC Skin Base
Product suggestion: RCMA loose colorless powder
LONG-WEARING MAKEUP I’m a huge fan of product that doesn’t budge. I like to apply my makeup and be set for the whole day and I especially want my clients to wear product that doesn’t fall off r smudge. There are a plethora of long-wearing products from waterproof mascaras, eyeliner pencils and wonderful long-wearing concealers that also offer full coverage.
SETTING SPRAY Setting sprays are everywhere these days and I am so grateful for them. Most can be spritzed on the face prior to makeup application to work as a primer and then also on top of the fin shed makeup. They can do many things, such as absorb excess oil, create a barrier on top of the makeup, tone redness, add extra hydration, and so on. Th s product can even be sprayed onto a fluffy brush and then used to blend out cream or liquid foundations. Don’t forget your fi al mist before walking out the door!

hair + tonic
Salon flourishes in Gulfport historic hotspot story by Chris Dearman | photography by Neil Ladner
Hair + Tonic is a modern barbering and upscale beauty salon that is a must visit for anyone who wants to look their best. Located inside the old train depot in downtown Gulfport, the chic salon offers a variety of services including creative and inspired cuts, colors, makeup and waxing. Lauren Damond, owner and operator of Hair + Tonic, designed the salon to have separate rooms for men and women in the historic building that gives a nod to its past by keeping visual aspects of the train depot intact, as well as incorporating art and photography by local artists. For instance, one of the exposed brick walls are lined with the old windows where tickets were once sold. Large sliding doors that were used to load trains still hang in the salon, and one of the shampoo bowls sits on top of an original cargo scale. When trains go by periodically, history seems to come alive, which lends even more character to the place. Damond is a young businesswoman who is quickly making a name for herself by providing a space where she and her stylists can showcase their skills. “I hire extremely talented people who bring their own
108
unique talents to our clients,” Damond says. “It’s like a puzzle and I want each artist to be a piece of a puzzle, and together we create a complete picture.” Damond is originally from Oregon and moved to the Gulf Coast six months before Hurricane Katrina. Taking that storm as a sign to venture out and see a different part of the world, she moved to Australia for two years before returning to make South Mississippi her home. After beauty school, she built her clientele by working in various salons. When the opportunity opened to acquire space in the train depot, Damond jumped at the chance to become her own boss and make the salon her own, which has been completely renovated and updated with a modern look and feel. “When people come into my salon, I want them to feel like they are not in South Mississippi,” Damond says. “I want it to be a very different and unique experience.” Being that a large part of Hair + Tonic’s clientele consists of businessmen from the Hancock building and other downtown businesses in Gulfport, Damond chose the salon name as a play on the classic cleansing waters used on beards and scalps. They use beard balms and

Mardi Gras Museum
All things purple, green and gold by Dana Sleger Right in the heart of Biloxi, there’s a special place devoted to all things purple, green and gold — a place that celebrates decades of exquisite pageantry, bountiful revelry and krewe history. The Mardi Gras Museum was founded in 1995 under the leadership of Ruth Hunt and Martha McDermott to tell the story of this festive celebration along the Coast and preserve that history and its artifacts for future generations. Housed in the Magnolia Hotel, which was built in 1847 and is the only surviving antebellum hotel structure on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the two-story building located near Mary Mahoney’s restaurant is home to an important part of the Coast’s cultural identity. “Mardi Gras celebrations go back to our French heritage, with the fi st documented acknowledgement of Mardi Gras on the Gulf Coast being in 1699 when French Canadian Explorer Pierre LeMoyne d’Iberville noted in his journals that March 3, 1699, was Mardi Gras day,” says Bill Raymond, historical administrator for the City of Biloxi. “Since that day Mardi Gras has been celebrated in one form or another all along the Coast.” Th oughout the years, a vast number of artifacts have been donated to build the museum’s collection. However, Gulf Coast revelers never 122
expected to have a hurricane thrown at them in 2005 that would rob precious items from their history such as the queen’s costume worn by Liz Corso Joachim when she served a Queen Ixolib in 1960. In addition, right before Katrina hit, the museum was in the process of relocating to the Dantzler House, which was adjacent to the Biloxi Lighthouse before the storm destroyed the building. Unfortunately, the dress worn by Carolyn Bolton as Queen Ixolib in 1957 was donated for the museum’s opening exhibit in their new building right before Katrina hit and also was lost. The good news is that although the Magnolia Hotel took in six-and-a-half feet of water, artifacts located on the top fl or that had not yet been moved to the Dantzler House survived and allowed the museum to begin again. Following the storm, the decision was made to keep the museum at the newly restored Magnolia Hotel that now features an elevator to allow public access to the second fl or of the building. The restoration of the historic building also doubled the size of the pre-Katrina exhibits, and the Mardi Gras Museum is now home to a growing collection of more than 300 pieces with costumes and memorabilia from almost all the Carnival krewes and associations along the Coast.

2012 Krewe of Athen gown on display at Biloxi’s Mardi Gras Museum
Bay museum features original costume sketches
When the Hancock County Visitor Information Center opened on the fi st fl or of the historic Bay St. Louis Train Depot in 2010, just a few Mardi Gras costumes were on display for visitors to learn more about the county’s Carnival history. The success of this small exhibit was so well received by the public, a Mardi Gras Museum utilizing half of the downstairs visitor center opened in 2013 to celebrate krewes of Hancock County. Costumes from the entire Krewe of Nereids were placed on mannequins for people to enjoy a closer view, and since then, the collection has grown signifi antly. “The museum displays the original sketches of the costumes next to the completed costume for the king, queen, dukes, maids, pages and captain,” says Myrna Green, manager for the Hancock County Tourism Bureau. “The poster for that particular year is on display along with a DVD of the actual ball. Doubloons, decorations and beads are on display, and costumes are changed on an annual basis so there is always something new and exciting to visit.”

Not only is Carnival a special season to the participants, it serves as a great economic engine for the community. Krewes select members of royalty, including a king and queen to lead the misrule. Membership The king, queen and royal court (six dukes and six maids) are selected by a random drawing from the paid membership, and anybody can be selected. Court members have ranged from 21 to 70 years old. Membership is enjoyable and affordable. For

$325 per year, members and their spouses get invitations to all of the parties. More info: www. lescavaliers.org Events Les Cavaliers’ official schedule consists of a spring king and queen’s party, a summer party, and a fête in late fall. All events lead up to the Les Cavaliers Ball weekend where things get started with a Friday night “Floor Party,” a Saturday warm-up luncheon and a formal ball on Saturday night. However, one never knows when the king of misrule will call for an impromptu gathering.

Mission Krewe of Medics was established as a result of a dream that the first sergeant had: to create an event — a party of sorts — that all of the newcomers could attend to experience what this region had to offer. The Krewe of Medics has a ball every year to give the military personnel assigned to Keesler Medical Center a taste of the South and what Mardi Gras is like. Royalty selection of the king, queen, three dukes and three maids is randomly selected from the Keesler Medical Center employees and volunteers present on the night of the ball. Membership The krewe is a total volunteer organization that has no membership dues or funding. Any military, civilian or contract employee or volunteer of Keesler Medical Center may be a member.

WOODY’S ROADSIDE Ocean Springs favorite opens in Biloxi by Chris Dearman
A favorite Ocean Springs hotspot recently crossed the bridge to open a second location in Biloxi so locals and tourists could have an opportunity to savor fresh, never frozen food while also enjoying a beautiful waterfront view. Woody’s Roadside Bar & Grill opened in January on U.S. 90 and offers a family friendly restaurant with a unique environment. Owners Jeff louner, Kevin Williams, and Danny Chinn gave their new restaurant a classic feel by using large multimedia murals of vintage-style postcards on the walls to showcase local scenery. “We wanted to feel a little outdoors and be super casual,” Danny says about the décor. “It’s a fun atmosphere.” Whether dining indoors or on the patio to take in the Gulf view, bring your appetite because the portions are large and sure to please. If you’re up for an appetizer, you can’t go wrong with the crowd favorite: Woody’s Cheese Bombs. A huge block of white cheddar is cut every day to create cubes that are twice battered, then deep-fried into warm gooey
goodness. The Big Style Nachos also are tasty, as well as the Creole Shrimp Smackers, which consists of a large portion of crispy fried shrimp tossed in a secret Woody’s sauce that will wake the taste buds. “It’s a little bit spicy and a little bit sweet,” Danny says. “It’s a proprietary sauce that we concocted in the kitchen one day that we think is pretty spectacular.” Woody’s extensive menu features a wide variety of items including sandwiches, salads, seafood, tacos and 17 different burgers for which Woody’s made their name. “All of our beef is certifi d Angus and we literally cube and grind up a roast every day,” Danny says. “It’s as fresh as you’re going to get. You are ensured the beef is from a single source and never frozen.” After careful consideration, I chose “The Cruisin’ Burger” — a fresh ground Angus patty, chipotle mayo, fried jalapeno, Applewood bacon and pepper jack cheese topped with two cheese bombs, lettuce, tomato and red onion. The white cheddar mixed with the heat of the pepper jack and jalapeno brings a nice balance to each bite of the sizable burger. www.gcwmultimedia.com

Other standouts include the “Smokey Mountain” burger, which is topped with bacon, smoked gouda, an onion ring and remoulade sauce, as well as “The Hangover,” which is topped with Havarti and cheddar cheese, hash browns, bacon and a fried egg. If you’re craving something more unique in taste, try the Cajun burger — a combination of Angus and andouille sausage — or the “Get Me to the Greek” burger, which is a blend of lamb and fresh ground Angus served with marinated red onion, balsamic mayo, feta and Swiss cheese, and Kalamata olives. Other creations include “The Macho Nacho” burger blended with chorizo and “The Big Bad Bison” blended with buff lo. Woody’s also has an extensive bar featuring many specialty drinks and beers. The Woody’s Top Shelf Rita made with Patron Silver tequila, Grand Marnier, Cointreau, orange juice, margarita mix and Roses lime juice is particularly refreshing. They also have 12 beers on tap that are rotated out for variety and to highlight local brews. A nice perk is that each draft eer is served at 32 degrees thanks to the patented Chill-Rite system in house. Woody’s Roadside Bar & Grill in Biloxi is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. And don’t forget to ask about the opportunity to purchase a fi e art print of a postcard mural by local artist Jody Barrilleaux.

Celebrate Easter with a berry dessert by Andrea Yeager
Fresh fruit from local to regional farms are making the grand arrival at farmers’ markets and supermarkets just in time for festive Easter or Passover meals. Yes, some fruits are around nearly all year due to refrigeration and growing methods, but a winter strawberry fails to taste as bright as a fresh Ponchatoula, Louisiana, or a Mississippi berry. Ponchatoula celebrates these sweet red berries at the annual Strawberry Festival April 7-9. Eubanks Farms in Lucedale started selling strawberries in March, as did other growers. Strawberry season in Mississippi and Louisiana runs through mid-May and then the blues hit — blueberries that is. Ocean Springs will hold its Red, White and Blue Festival in June and Poplarville will celebrate the annual Blueberry Jubilee festival that month as well. Because strawberries are so fresh now, these ripe berries are perfect to incorporate in flavorful desserts for a special holiday. Easter and Passover once again coincide with Easter on Sunday, April 16, and Passover April 11-17. A fresh fruit dessert can culminate the special meal, and few things are as delectable as a strawberries and cream cake. I found this recipe in a 2002 issue of “Cooking Pleasures” magazine is a must-try for strawberry lovers. The presentation is fi st-rate, but even better, it is simple to make. It reminds me of Rouses’ Gentilly Cake for those who have tasted that slice of heaven. STRAWBERRIES AND CREAM CAKE
CAKE: 6 eggs, separated 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly 1/2 tsp. almond extract 1 cup sugar 3/4 cup cake flour, divided 1/4 cup sliced almonds, toasted, ground (see note) CREAM: 2 cups heavy whipping cream, chilled 1/2 tsp. almond extract
STRAWBERRIES: 2 cups sliced strawberries, divided 12 whole strawberries for garnish, halved
DIRECTIONS: 1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9-by-2-inch round cake pan with nonstick cooking spray, line bottom with parchment paper. In small bowl, whisk together egg yolks, butter and almond extract. 2. In a large bowl, beat egg whites at high speed until soft peaks form. Gradually add 1 cup sugar in a steady stream. Beat 3 minutes or until shiny, stiff peaks form. 3. Pour egg yolk mixture over beaten egg whites. Immediately sift about half of the flour over the eggs and gently fold together. Sift remaining flour over batter and fold in. Fold in almonds being careful not to deflate egg whites. 4. Pour batter into pan. Bake 30 to 40 minutes or until golden brown and toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool on wire rack. 5. Meanwhile in a large bowl, beat all cream ingredients at medium-high speed until stiff peaks form. 6. When cake is cool, remove from pan and slice horizontally into 3 layers. To assemble cake, place one layer on 9-inch cardboard round or cake plate. Spread with 1 cup cream; cover with 1 cup of sliced strawberries. Place second cake layer on top of strawberries. Spread with 1 cup cream and cover with 1 cup of the sliced strawberries. Top with third cake layer, spread remaining cream on top and sides. Decorate top with halved strawberries. Store in refrigerator. Makes 12 servings. Note: To toast almonds, preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place on baking sheet and bake for 6 minutes or until deep golden brown. Do not burn.

COAST CARES
Gulf Coast Community Ministries committed to serving those in need When you look at the Mississippi Gulf Coast, you see a great vacation spot: beautiful beaches, exciting activities for the whole family and an area rich in history. However, for a moment, let us look beyond the excitement and fun of Gulf Coast living — let us look behind the curtain. One in five Harrison County families survive on an income at or below the poverty level. Many parents are faced with the difficult decision of paying rent or buying food. Th s is a real-world problem for many families right here in Harrison County. Homelessness is a growing problem all around us and many families are having to “double-up” to provide a roof over their heads. It only takes one crisis to take a family from just making it to being left in a situation where they are homeless. In this post-Christmas season, many employees are facing reduced hours at a job that was just barely paying the bills. Where do they turn? What do they do?
by Natalie Atkins, Executive Director of GCCM Photo by James Edward Bates Photography MORE INFO Gulf Coast Community Ministries is a 501c(3) nonprofit organization and registered charity with the Mississippi Secretary of State. GCCM works to alleviate the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of impoverished individuals on the Mississippi Gulf Coast through their food pantry, free clinic, homeless outreach, literacy and spiritual counseling. Gulf Coast Community Ministries is committed to helping these families during distressing times. Th ough the support of our community, churches and individual donors, we are here for such a time as this. Our food pantry serves up to or just over 100 families each week. Our Homeless Outreach Ministry provides needed items for approximately 80 homeless men and women, and our free clinic works to provide a healthier community by seeing uninsured adults each month. Feeding the hungry, caring for the sick and clothing the homeless are not enough though. An individual must feel that they have worth and value. Our most important mission is to ensure that each person who walks through our doors knows we care and that God loves them. Praying for our clients is a privilege and honor that we do not take lightly. We are part of the community serving the community.
“We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty.” — Mother Teresa
