Once a term that dominated newspaper headlines and environmental discourse, “global warming” is now heard far less frequently. Symptoms andthetimingoftheappearanceofleafspotwillvarydependingonwhich fungi is causing the problem. * I purchase rotisserie chickens and use the meat for different things -- soup, casseroles, etc. I have a trick to getting the skin off. My hand strength isn’t what it used to be, and those birds are slippery. I use a paper towel to grip the skin, and pull the meat and bone right out. It works well on a raw bird too.

* To re-whiten socks or washcloths, try boiling a pot of water and adding a sliced, juiced lemon. Soak the items for at least an hour, and then pick out the lemon and add the pot -- water and all -- to a load of wash.

* If there are crushed cookies in a pack I purchase, I set them aside in a plastic baggie in the freezer to use on ice cream. Yummy!

* If you have been cooking in the oven and have a pan that’s got cooked-on food, you can get it clean without all the scrubbing. Immediately after cooking, while the oven is still hot, add enough water to cover the bottom of the pan and a little dishsoap. Put it in the oven until the oven is cool. The residual heat will work on the stuckon food while you are dining, and it’ll wipe right out.

Poetry is Essential Human Expression

Medicine, Law, Commerce, Engineering – they are noble and necessary races to dignify human life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love are things that keep us alive.”

Icould editorialize at length on the legitimate power of poetry and other creative works to maintain human sanity and worth through the arguably nonsensical world we currently call home. My good friend Christine says, creative writing is “therapy on the cheap – [as it] forces introspection.” I cannot agree more. is world is vastly di erent than any of us remember even weeks, months, de nitely years ago. ings change.

Some folks say nothing is certain besides death and taxes, but I disagree. I say nothing is certain in life except change and uncertainty. We can either choose to accept that certainty and ex with life’s changes or we can dig in our heels, maybe bury our heads in the sand hoping all will go back to “normal” if we can’t see it. Experts of course agree that the latter is unhealthy, so we must try to be exible as the tides come and go.

Part of human experience is loss, and by loss I mean more than the death of family, friends, and treasured pets, but even loss of a job, the ability to perform a hobby or activity we were used to, our typical schedules or traditions as kids change schools and activities and family time morphs, even loss of a treasured season, etc. We face changes, transitions, “losses,” more regularly than we probably notice. Most of the time, we ex with these transitions without much stress, but sometimes we need a little help.

We may seek solace from our fellow humans, bonding with those treasured friends and family who help us maintain our sanity through life’s seasons. We might seek professional help from fellow humans who happen to be professionally trained to help others such as ourselves through the tough times.

For those of you who are not writers yourselves or who are not teachers who focus English Language Arts curricula on poetry for a few weeks, April is National Poetry Month. Quintessential English teacher, John Keating, played by the immortal Robin Williams in the 1989 Dead Poets Society, encourages his students to truly appreciate poetry’s role in humanity. I relate every time I see this movie, and I beamed when my middle daughter enjoyed the lm a er months of begging for it on family movie nights.

In addition to writing and publishing my own poetry, I teach English at MCC, and every time I incorporate poetry in my curriculum, I rst o en help students connect music lyrics with poetry (because they o en come to my class jaded against nitpicky gradeschool analysis of classics with little relevance to today’s youth). I

stress the di erence (and similarities) between old school methods of picking apart an obscure poetic piece and modern analytic methods. We analyze that each individual has their own perspectives and poets express ideas in their own unique ways.

It is simply incredible. at’s what makes poetry e ective. It can be light and u y, what some may call “pretty,” but it may also be dark, jagged, and otherwise quite ugly to some readers’ eyes. Regardless, poetry is genuine human expression. It’s a human being dealing with the ugly of the world, making sense of it for themselves, and sharing that expression with the world in a way more creative than just prosaic journaling.

I love that Amanda Gorman, a young, enlightened twentysomething, brought poetry to the mainstream American scene with her presidential inauguration piece (and has arguably exploded since). Poetry is incredibly powerful. It inspires and incites, it calms and reassures, it brings people together and tears people apart, it brightens darkness and tempers mania, all in the same lines, and always with authenticity sometimes lacking in other modes of human expression. We all express our selves through language, and poetry’s idiosyncrasies allow expression in ways other modes do not or cannot.

We may not all be Amanda Gormans, but we have our own stories to share with the world. Let’s take a moment and listen to each other’s stories.

Finding the Right Food Bowl for an Older Cat Takes Trial and Error

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I hope this advice helps other cat owners. My cat, Ferris, is 13 years old, and while he’s generally healthy, he does have arthritis and is not as energetic as he once was. I noticed a few months ago that he was not nishing his dry food in the evenings, so I took him to the vet to get him checked out. Everything was ne, but the vet said that he might have some discomfort crouching down to reach his food and water.

I went online to nd a raised platform that would hold food and water dishes. e trouble was that many of the platforms were too high for Ferris to reach comfortably, and he didn’t seem very happy with the platform design. Instead, I found a dish that he loves. It sits about three inches above the oor and is angled higher in the back so that he doesn’t push the food out of the bowl while eating. It’s weighted so that it doesn’t shi while he eats. is is a lot more comfortable for Ferris, and he’s eating all of his food again. -Terry L., Bloomington, Indiana

Properly maintained headlights vastly improve driver safety

Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be replaced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs when replacing them. Industry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every two years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking with the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor weather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of night vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the standard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam pattern that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway Loss Data Institute, roughly 10 percent of all highway deaths involve large trucks. Braking capability can play a role in such deaths, as the IIHS notes that loaded tractortrailers take between 20 and 40 percent farther than cars to fully stop. That discrepancy is even greater on poorly maintained roads or roads marked by adverse conditions such as ice, rain and/ or snow. While 16 percent of the roughly 3,600 people who died in large truck crashes in the United States in 2014 were truck occupants, more than four times that many people (68 percent) were occupants of cars and other passenger vehicles. That’s because large trucks typically weigh 20 to 30 times more than passenger vehicles, meaning occupants in cars and passenger trucks are incredibly susceptible to serious injury or death should they get in accidents with tractor-trailers and other large trucks. Time of day also must be considered when examining large truck crashes and fatalities. While 17 percent of deaths in 2014 took place between the hours of noon and 3 p.m., that figure dropped to 11 percent between the typical rush hours of 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Taking Zinc as Daily Supplement Won’t Change Hair Loss

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am having trouble finding a reliable recommendation for the daily supplement zinc. I purchased 50-mg pills, but I think this may be too much. I am 74 and female, and I would like to include zinc in my daily supplements, as my hair has begun thinning quite a bit straight down the top of my head. -- R.M.

ANSWER: Zinc is an important nutrient, and it is certainly true that zinc deficiency may lead to hair loss. However, most people with hair loss do not have a zinc deficiency, and there is no convincing data that giving extra zinc to a person with normal zinc levels will help with hair loss. Hair loss along the midline is consistent with female pattern hair loss, which is very common among women in their 70s and usually has nothing to do with zinc. Very high amounts of zinc supplementation can be dangerous (and impair your body’s ability to absorb other trace metals such as copper), but 50 mg is a safe amount. Still, the most effective therapies for female pattern hair loss include minoxidil (usually topical, but low-dose oral is increasingly used), spironolactone and finasteride. A dermatologist is the expert on hair loss and can give you a better diagnosis by exam than I can by your description.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My youngest son has to have both of his hips replaced. He is only 37, but is in a very strenuous job of being a boilermaker in an oil refinery. This is the hardest job in a heavy industry. His doctors are telling me that his hips deteriorated due to alcohol consumption -- is this even possible? Even if he can get through this ordeal, he is still locked into this physical type of work. The doctors say he will need another hip replacement in 10 to 15 years if he stays in this line of work. Do you agree with these statements? -- B.M.

ANSWER: Let’s take them one by one.

The most common cause of hip disease requiring hip replacement is osteoarthritis of the hips, but it is quite unusual to see someone of your son’s age require a hip replacement. Alcohol is not a recognized risk factor for osteoarthritis of the hips, but it is a known underlying cause of a much less-common condition: osteonecrosis of the hips, also called avascular necrosis.

The more a person drinks, the more likely they are to get this rare condition, even though most heavy drinkers will never get this condition. Not every person with osteonecrosis of the hip will require a hip replacement. It is frequent to have both sides of the hip affected with disease.

Untreated congenital hip dysplasia may also lead to severe hip damage requiring a total hip replacement, and it is also one cause I see in a person of your son’s age.

Prognosis after a modern hip replacement is very good. More than 90% of people are doing well, pain-free and without complications 15 years after surgery takes place. Of course, some kinds of activities such as heavy lifting and high-impact movements could make the surgical prosthetics wear out faster, but regular activities such as walking, stair climbing and most sports that are not highintensity or high-impact can be done without damage to the prosthetic.

Although further alcohol use will not affect the prosthetic hips or other bones, many other body systems are very much affected by alcohol. So, if he has been a heavy drinker for some time, it is now time to stop. His doctors can help him find many available resources.

Pedestrians, especially in the dark

It's never safe to assume that, simply because pedestrians have the right-of-way, you can blindly walk across the road without looking both ways first. Especially in the dark, when you're wearing dark clothing, there are street lights and oncoming headlights shining in drivers' eyes, and you cross abruptly, causing drivers to have to slam on their brakes to avoid flattening you.

War-ravaged Cratered Parking Lot

In reference to the "unsafe conditions" at a certain Senior/Disabled complex Rant on 3/31/23: I think I know the referred to complex. I don't live there, I visit there, but am seriously considering stopping visiting there because of the pitiful condition of the parking lot for fear of costly damage to my car! The potholes aren't as large as basketballs. The potholes are as large as basketball backboards, which last I checked, measure 6 feet wide, and 3 1/2 feet high!

Do you believe you’re the only one in the store? You don’t need to do your shopping and jogging at the same time. Jog outside. You come flying out a side aisle like the main aisle is empty, block an aisle while you scrutinize what you want, stop your cart while you read labels right next to another cart blocking everything. You block the deli case with your cart so nobody else can see the items or bring full shopping carts to the speed/self checkout, even if the sign says 20 or less. Courtesy for others is a thing of the past.

Rising Cost of Home Insurance

When I got my home insurance bill and it showed a massive payment for my policy renewal, I actually laughed. I ipped the page over, believing I’d received someone else’s mail by mistake ... probably a neighbor down the street. But when I saw my own name, I wasn’t laughing anymore when I grabbed my calculator and discovered that the new amount was a 45% increase over last year.

Still, ever hopeful, I called my insurance company, wondering if someone else’s home had been plugged into my account. No, it hadn’t.

e amount listed was indeed for my home, as were the numbers for out buildings, personal property and temporary living expenses.

I called several neighbors: Has your insurance gone up? No, they all said. I discovered the likely reason for that during a call to a friendly local insurance agent. ey’re no doubt in the middle of a policy period, he said. eir bad surprise will come when it’s time to renew that policy and all the price increases hit them.

ere are several reasons why a policy can increase, such as material and labor (which is the big one right now), additions to the house, number of prior claims, your deductible, your credit score and the breed of dog you own.

A er several calls to di erent insurance companies, it’s not looking good. What I get so far is that if I decide to gamble and lower my coverage level, I run a risk that something will happen and I’ll be stuck for mammoth amounts of money that insurance won’t cover.

e only thing that’s going to save a few dollars is to pay the whole year upfront and not have to pay the monthly budget fees with every payment.

Keep it impersonal. Impersonal doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to grabanythingofftheshelf.Butthe gift should not be something that wouldoffendtastesorsentiments. Avoid clothing, perfume, jewelry, or accessories. Lotions and other scented items are also ill-advised. Skip your boss. Etiquette experts say that gifts should flow downward not upward in the realm of employment ranking. That means it’s best to stick with gifting colleagues who are on the same level as you. Buying a gift for the boss may look like you’re simply trying to score brownie points instead of offering a meaningful gift.

Give group gifts. Rather than gifting individuals, it can be safer to give a group gift from which many can benefit. This can include coffee and pastries from a nearby bakery, or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up the office environment.

Keep prices modest. Office giving is not about illustrating who can afford the most expensive gift. Remember, some people will not be able to reciprocate, and they shouldn’t feel uncomfortable for being on the receiving end of a lavish gift.

Follow the rules. Gift exchanges shouldbeclearedwithsupervisors or human resources professionals. Itpaystocheckiftherearerulesin placeforgiftingothers.
