HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE

Instead of giving away unwanted items that have gathered dust around the house, many people turn to garage and yard sales to transform their clutter into some extra money. Yard sales may not be a “get rich quick” scheme, but they present an environmentally friendly way to clean up a home. What’s more, they can be an ideal way to connect with neighbors and meet new people. Any money earned is an added bonus.

Statistics collecting resource Statistics Brain says that roughly 165,000 yard/garage sales take place in the United States each week. Nearly 700,000 people purchase something at those sales, leading to millions of dollars exchanging hands.

Makes about 45

PHILLY CHEESESTEAK DUMPLINGS

50 thin square eggless wonton wrappers (around 4 inches in size)

Vegetable oil, for frying

Filling:

5 ounces shiitake mushrooms, stems removed and finely chopped

1 tablespoon roasted sesame oil

1 pound, 2 ounces cooked, shredded beef short ribs

11 ounces cabbage kimchi, drained and finely chopped

3 1/2 ounces spring onions, finely chopped

3 ounces pickled jalapeños, finely chopped

1 pound, 2 ounces mature cheddar cheese, grated

Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

To serve:

Silgochu (dried chilli threads)

1 spring onion, julienned and soaked in ice water until curled, then drained Sriracha

For the filling, first sauté the mushrooms in the sesame oil in a large nonstick frying pan over medium-low heat until just softened. Remove from the heat and set aside. In a large bowl, combine the rest of the filling ingredients with the mushrooms. Mix together using your hands, really breaking up the short rib meat to make a uniform texture.

For the dumplings, line a couple of baking sheets with parchment and set aside. Fill a small bowl with water. Unwrap the wonton wrappers and cover lightly with a piece of clingfilm to keep them moist. Lay a wrapper on a clean work surface and put 1 ounce of the meat filling in the center. Dip a forefinger into the water and run it along the edges of the wrapper to moisten the surface. Now bring the open edges to the center, and pinch where the edges meet each other, creating four seams in a cross shape. Set aside and cover with clingfilm or a damp tea towel while you shape the rest. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling, making sure the dumplings are not touching on the baking sheets.

To a medium saucepan, add the vegetable oil and heat to 340 F (170 C). Working in batches, place the dumplings on their sides in the pan in a single layer without crowding. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until golden brown. Transfer the fried dumplings to a wire rack or kitchen paper-lined plate to drain. Repeat with the remaining dumplings. If you don’t plan on cooking them straight away, you can freeze them on the baking sheets, then bag them up and store in the freezer.

Top with some of the silgochu and curly spring onion and serve immediately with the sriracha.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. Assign an outside meeting place, so you can quickly locate each other

WINDOW DRESSING. Everyone cleans their windows, but few remember to dust window blinds and drapes -- places that can be havens for dust mite matter and other inanimate allergens. Using a Swiffer Duster (unscented, of course) can trap inanimate allergens two times more than a typical dusting cloth and three times more than a feather duster because it picks up dust and locks it away with thousands of flexible, fluffyfibers, designed to reach into nooksand crannies.

TELLING SIGNS COMMON INSECTS ARE INFESTING A LAWN

Chinch bugs: The experts at BobVila.com report that chinch bugs are not necessarily problematic when their populations are limited to around 10 to 15 bugs per square foot of lawn. In such instances, chinch bug populations are generally controlled by ants and ladybugs. However, extreme heat and drought, problems that have plagued various regions in North America in recent years, reduce the populations of bugs that feed on chinch bugs, thus increasing the population of these unwanted guests that feed on grass. GardenTech® indicates that damage from chinch bugs is most visible between June and September. That damage begins with grass taking on a purple tinge before it turns yellow and then brown after wilting.

HOW TO STAY SAFE ON DIY PROJECTS

Be especially careful with power tools. Power tools can do a lot and they’re fun to use. But it’s important that DIYers do not let fun distract them from safety. The Power Tool Institute urges power tool users to wear personal protective equipment, including eye and hearing protection and a dust mask, whenever using power tools. The PTI also advises users to make sure tools are powered down before plugging them in and to inspect the tool before using it. Inspections can confirm that all guards are in place and that tools are up to the task at hand. Much like it’s unsafe to overreach on a ladder, overreaching when using power tools increase the risk for mistakes, accidents and injuries.

REDUCE RADON IN YOUR HOME

Testing can determine if radon is present in a home. Homeowners can rely on professional companies or purchase self-testing kits at home improvement retailers. If a test comes back positive for high levels, conduct a follow-up test before taking any measures to fix the problem. Unusual weather can increase radon levels. If repeat testing yields the same results, efforts to reduce radon levels are necessary.

Homeowners must keep in mind that no two situations are the same and various techniques may be necessary to reduce radon levels in a home. Simply opening the windows in a home may not be enough, and many radon remedies require the skilled services of professional contractors who are experienced in radon reduction procedures. Homes can be fixed, but some instances may be best left to the professionals.

HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR

LookforEV-friendlylodging: Many hotels now feature charging stations exclusively for guests with EVs. Some hotels include the cost of utilizing such stations in their parking fees, while others may charge an additional amount. Either way, the convenience of finding a hotel with its own charging station outweighs any extra costs, as cars can be charged overnight while guests are asleep, leaving more time to travel in a vehicle that’s fully charged each morning.

REDUCE INSTANCES OF DISTRACTED DRIVING

Distracted driving is a problem that results in injuries and claims the lives of thousands of people each year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines distracted driving as any activity that diverts attention from driving. In 2015, 3,477 people were killed and 391,000 injured in the United States as a result of distracted driving. Allstate says distracted driving is now the No. 1 risk on Canadian roads, contributing to eight in 10 collisions.

It is relatively easy to avoid becoming a statistic by reducing distractions behind the wheel.

Put away tech devices: One of the easiest ways to reduce distractions is to keep phones and tablets out of reach while driving. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says sending or reading a text message takes a driver’s eyes off of the road for about five seconds, or long enough to cover a football field while driving at 55 mph. It removes a person’s attention from the road; takes his or her hands off of the wheel; and it mentally engages the brain when a driver’s focus should be on driving. Devices should be stowed away when driving. Drivers should pull over if they need to send a text or read a message.

Set the GPS ahead of a trip

Global positioning systems have revolutionized the way motorists get to and from locations. They can help signal upcoming traffic and find the best routes possible.

Just like other devices, GPS can be a distraction, especially if drivers are taking their eyes off the road and constantly pressing buttons on the map. Enter the destination address before departing and place the GPS in a position that it can be glanced at, which will not impede vision. Better yet, let a passenger navigate.

Limit or skip phone calls: Many people find that making phone calls while on the road is an efficient use of time. Yet the personal injury experts at Lehmbecker Law say even when drivers use hands-free devices their brains can remain distracted for 27 seconds after using voice commands to dial a number. Engaging in phone conversations will continue to take drivers’ minds off of their driving responsibilities.

Drowsy driving is dangerous: Being tired can be a distraction as well.

Geico insurance reports a U.S. government study showed that 37 percent of drivers have nodded off or actually fallen asleep at least once while driving. Drowsiness increases the risk of a crash by roughly four times. Those who become drowsy behind the wheel should pull over.

Skip the infotainment package: New vehicle infotainment systems can take one’s attention off of the road for long periods of time. According to research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, drivers using invehicle technologies like voice-based and touch-screen features may find themselves unusually distracted.

In addition to these tips, drivers can reduce the number of passengers contributing to distractions, turn down the volume on the radio, and pull over when eating on the road. Reducing distractions can save lives.

A Brief Glimpse into the Mind and Inspiration that is North Chili Poet, Elizabeth Johnston

When did you start writing poetry?

I remember writing song lyrics as early as ve, belting out lines about trees and birds and summertime as I kicked my legs out toward the sky on the tire swing in my parents’ backyard.

What styles/forms of poetry do you write/prefer?

I love lyric poetry! at’s probably why Rattle Magazine is my favorite. e editor, Tim Green, curates such an amazing issue every time. I’m also a real sucker for a great pantoum.

What inspires you to write? Where do you ‘ nd’ inspiration?

I usually write poems inspired by some struggle I’m working through as a parent, a daughter, a partner, a friend. As so many writers have already said, I write to gure out what I think. And of course to make connections with others going through similar experiences. Lately, I’ve been thinking about how writing helps me to more fully inhabit my body. I think a lot of women in particular have a fraught relationship with their bodies. We are either taught by society to think of our bodies as something separate from ourselves, something to control/contain, or over time, we learn to divorce ourselves from our bodies as a defense mechanism against trauma. I think growing up female in this country, especially now, can be very traumatizing. I also grew up in an evangelical church, where we’re taught our bodies were sinful and temporary and ultimately not our own. I’m trying to write into my body these days, to be more mindful of the bodily experience and to claim ownership of it. I started meditating a few months ago to help me with that journey.

How would you describe your writing habits?

For a while, I was training for races, and so while I was doing these long runs, I’d use the time to write poetry in my head. I don’t do races anymore, so now I try to set aside an hour every morning to write. Sometimes I’m successful, other times not so much. I am part of a writer’s group (Straw Mat Writers) and we try to meet at least once a month to workshop and then twice a year we go away on a writers retreat together and spend three or four days writing and workshopping. at’s usually where most of my writing happens –when I’m not at home distracted by my kids or animals or laundry –and my “job” in those moments is just to write and think about writing.

What are your favorite topics or themes to write about?

I am especially drawn to poems about parenting (I’m a mother of two daughters, 17 and 20). I’m also drawn to poems about gender mythology, poems that revise fairy tales, folklore, and myths from a feminist perspective. Also poems about popular culture (I’ve written poems about Barbie and e Wizard of Oz) and current events.

What writing groups do you connect with?

I’m co-founder of Straw Mat Writers and a member of Just Poets. I love online writing classes o ered by various outlets such as Catapult. Every year, my writing group and I attend the Association for Writers

and Writing Programs. And I teach at MCC, where I coordinate the Creative Writing program; I absolutely adore working with our students in that program.

What advice would you give a budding writer?

Just write. Make it happen. Find the time and do the work. And value it as work, just as important as any other job in your life. If writing is what feeds you, then don’t starve yourself, even if you don’t like what’s on the plate right now. Try new things. And when you enter the publishing world, don’t give up. Just because an editor doesn’t take your poem doesn’t mean it’s not a good poem or that you’re not a good writer. Finally, write for yourself. Because, ultimately, that’s why you started writing. Because you can’t not write. It’s who you are. So honor that.

For Neptune and Nina, friends rst published in cahoodaloodaling.com

At the pond the old lab dives in, chasing his splashes, while my pup bounds like a colt, creeps close to water’s edge, jumps back, whines, wavers between solid ground and the instinct that will prevail: to join her friend in play, root shes from the mud, release sleek body, webbed toes, rudder-like tail. I suppose this is how love of anything goes: eventually we give up the shore. Why lament the inevitable, grieve the grey in an old dog’s coat, the hip that gives out, clouds gathering in his eyes? In the end, we are as reckless with love as animals, pretending, perhaps, to see only what they do: pond, a er pond, a er wonderful pond.

WAYS TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES

Think of small business sponsorships when putting together school- or clubbased fundraisers.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

* Make children’s pills easier to swallow by crushing them and putting them in a bit of jelly or applesauce. Make sure, especially if it’s a prescription medicine, that it can be crushed. -- U.L. in Minnesota

* To keep kids from running into a closed sliding-glass door, cut out a small picture of something that’s brightly colored, “laminate” it by taping it across both sides, then tape it to the door at children’s eye level. -- E.R. in New York

* Painting season is in full swing at my house, and here are my two favorite painting tips: One is to lightly soap the windows (glass only) and let it dry. Any paint splatters will land on the soap, which can be easily wiped away when the paint is all dry. The other is to give locks, hinges and doorknobs a light coat of petroleum jelly. It works the same way, and when polished away, it leaves a nice shine to hardware.

* Here’s a great spring facial: Split an avocado, mash half of it and use it as a mask. Let sit for up to five minutes, then rinse away with warm water.

* Cleaning windows? Use a nylon net scrubbie from the kitchen to get rid of bugs from screens. It also works really well to scrub bugs off the car grille or car window.

* Here’s a great tip you can use when parallel parking in front of a storefront. Check the reflection to see if it looks like there’s room when backing in or pulling forward. -- O.W. in California

Q&A Master Gardeners with the

When should I prune raspberries to ensure a good harvest this year? Did I miss that timing? What other plants should be tended to in spring to ensure successful production this season?

Raspberries should be pruned in late winter or early spring (February - April).

We recommend leaving 4 - 6 canes per square foot at this time. For the ease of picking, a raspberry patch will be between 1 - 3 feet wide; if the patch is wider, consider cutting back or pulling out canes that widen the patch too much. When pruning out canes, cut them at the base. First, remove canes that have bulges in them-- these are usually caused

by cane borers, and the internal damage causes the canes to collapse once they become heavy with fruit. Second, remove all canes that have pale, dried-out looking bark, as those have fruited and will not yield fruit again. Next, remove the thinnest canes. Ideally you will be left with 4-6 thick, sturdy canes. If those canes have little remnants of fruit on their tips, you may cut the tips back to encourage more branching. Elderberry is another berry crop that can be pruned in the same time period. Cut out canes that are 3 years old and over. Inspect the bark on the remaining canes,

removing areas with cankers (sunken, discolored lesions) and canes that have holes in them. When cutting back diseased canes such as these, look into the cross-section of the pruning cut. If you observe browning or uneven tissue in the pruning cut, continue cutting back until it is uniform.

Berry plants that should be pruned before their leaves emerge include: blueberry, currant and gooseberry, seaberry, and pawpaw.

beside his bowl and howls -- making it impossible for me to work at my desk. What can I do to calm him down and help him lose weight? --

Dear Jim: It’s di cult to help overweight pets lose those extra pounds, and it’s clear that Seeker has no qualms about complaining about it!

Since you’re working from home, one way to mitigate the howling is to implement a divert-and-reward system to take his mind o his empty bowl. In essence, keep Seeker away from the kitchen and as busy as your schedule allows.

Immediately a er his breakfast, close o the kitchen. Use a baby gate or shut the door, and hide the food bowl out of sight. Take Seeker outside for a short walk to burn o extra energy and a few calories. If you’re in a high-rise apartment or another situation where going outside frequently is more di cult, opt for a ve-minute training and play session instead.

While you’re working, Seeker should be separated from the kitchen -- either in a closed-o room or with you in your o ce (but in his own corner) -- and given plenty of toys to chew on. Spend time with Seeker on each break from work. Play, work on basic obedience, or just hang out. Once you’re nished with work for the day, take Seeker out for a long walk before giving him dinner.

Stick with the diet prescribed by the vet. Be patient but consistent with Seeker to change his behavior. He can and will lose the weight, because you care about him!

Patient With Risk of Breast Cancer Questions Safety of Yearly MRI

DEAR DR. ROACH: Due to a slight genetic risk of breast cancer (my Tyrer-Cuzick Model score was 20.6%), my doctor wants me to get breast MRIs with contrast annually. I am concerned about long-term exposure to the gadolinium-based contrast dye. I’ve learned that this heavy metal is considered safe, but traces of it can be stored in the brain and other body tissues.

I am 49 and in very good health. I also get mammograms annually. I consulted my doctor about spacing out my MRIs every two to three years, but he said I should have an MRI every year. So I could be getting these MRIs for the next 35 or so years. Do the benefits of contrast dye outweigh the harm in a person with my health profile? -- S.A.

ANSWER: I’m afraid I don’t have a good answer for you. It is true that most authorities recommend an intensive breast cancer surveillance program for women at a high risk of breast cancer, in the range of a 20% to 25% lifetime risk. (The average risk for developing breast cancer for a woman born today is estimated to be about 13%.)

The Tyrer-Cuzick model of estimating breast cancer risk tends to give higher estimates than the other commonly used models, such as the BRCAPRO. Other models may not put you over the threshold for intensive screening with MRIs, which is usually combined with mammograms. The question about gadolinium (the chemical element used in the contrast dye for MRIs) is important because some people do store gadolinium in various tissues, including the brain, but the clinical significance of this is unknown. (People with kidney disease can develop a skin disease due to gadolinium, so they aren’t recommended to have MRIs with gadolinium.)

Although gadolinium can stay in the body for months or years, there has been no evidence of harm from gadolinium in brain tissue, despite these agents having been used for many years. Some agents have less retention than others. The U.S. FDA has mandated patient guides for these contrast agents, which relay the information above.

Given that there is a probable benefit to intensive screening for breast cancer in your case due to your high genetic risk, and no more than a theoretical risk from gadolinium, I believe that the benefits outweigh the risks, but I can’t say that with complete certainty.

ORAL HEALTH LINKED TO OVERALL HEALTH

Oral health can tell us a lot about our overall health. Our mouths are full of bacteria, and our mouths are also the gateway to the rest of our body through ourdigestiveandrespiratorytracts.Daily brushingandflossinghelpkeepbacteria at bay, but oral bacteria are associated with several health conditions. Poor oral health has been linked to heart conditionssuchasendocarditis, clogged arteries, and strokes. Oral bacteria can enter lungs and cause conditions like pneumonia. Gum disease has been linked to pregnancy complications including premature birth and low birth weight. Conversely, some medical conditions can affect oral health—like diabetes, osteoporosis,Alzheimer’s,and HIV/AIDS—by reducing bone mass and the body’s resistance to infections.

Acknowledging the inherent connection between oral health and a patient’s

overall health, your dentist will use many techniques to diagnose, treat, restore, and promote total patient well-being. BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL offers this column in the hopes of educating the general public about the benefits of oral health. If we can help, either by answering questions or by providing comprehensive dental care, please call us at 585.343.4246. State-of-the-art dentistry and a dedicated professional dental team make 6 Batavia City Centre, theideal place to achieve optimum oral health.

P.S. In addition to daily brushing and flossing and regular dental checkups, a low-sugar diet, regular exercise, and replacing your toothbrush every few months all help support both oral health and overall health.

Drink more fluids. Drinking more fluids is one of the easier things people can do every day to reduce their cancer risk. The American Cancer Society recommends individuals consume eight cups of water per day, but millions likely fall far short of that amount. That’s unfortunate, as research presented at the American Association for Cancer Research International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research in 2011 found that high fluid intake was associated with a 24 percent reduced bladder cancer risk among men. In addition, a separate study funded by the Strauss Institute and published in 2020 in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that women with breast cancer consumed less water and total fluids than women who did not have breast cancer. The researchers concluded more investigation into the link between drinking more water and reducing breast cancer risk is necessary, but noted that drinking water is harmless, convenient and beneficial to many aspects of health. SENIOR NEWS

Why Are Seniors Targeted for Scams?

In one year alone, seniors lost over $3 billion to scammers, and it’s gotten worse every year. e 60-69 age group was bad enough, but the dollar losses rose even more a er age 70, and much more a er age 80.

Why are we targeted?

e thieves believe two things about us: We’re all rich and have great credit, having worked our whole lives, and, worst of all, that we won’t tell anyone if we lose money to them. ose two things alone make us constant targets.

All scammers have to do to turn us into victims, according to a study by Stanford and AARP, is raise our emotions. Whether happiness or anger, it doesn’t matter, because either will push us to hand over our information or our money.

For example, scammers will say we’ve won a big prize, like the lottery, but to claim that prize we need to send them processing fees in advance. We think about that prize and our good sense goes out the window.

Emotions come into play when a scammer calls pretending to be a grandchild in trouble. We’re asked to send money right away. We’re upset, and we do. But the emotional pleas for money don’t end there. Romance scams are huge, and too many lonely seniors send cash to their new love without questioning it.

Scammers who pretend to be from the government, such as the IRS, who frighten us into paying money, raise our emotions as well.

e list of scams directed at the elderly is nearly endless: investments, lottery wins, IRS tax bills, low-cost prescriptions, charities, tech repair, cemetery debts, romance, reverse mortgage, help signing up for Medicare, auto warranties ...

Beware. If you allow yourself to be scammed once, they will be back, because you’ll be on a list of people who can be fooled.

RAVES

Firemen’s Auxiliary

A very special thank you to the Firemen’s Ladies Auxiliary. Saturday, they had a fundraiser at the firehouse. The chicken and biscuit dinner they served was absolutely delicious. Next year I think I will order two dinners for myself. Thank you to all who made this a special meal.

Kindness of strangers

To the very special father and daughter from Sand Hill Rd, who helped us unload our truck load of branches at the West Bloomfield drop off area, we are eternally grateful to you. Many sincere thanks, we couldn’t have done it without you. Your kindness is rare!!

Does anyone else notice the obscene and loud music in many stores? I hope store managers see this post. Most people over the age of 40 are the ones that actually go out to shop, the rest buy online and never set foot in a store. Sometimes I would like to stay and look around but the background noise/music forces me to make my purchase and get out ASAP. Maybe the cashiers have the freedom to play music they like. Maybe it gets piped in. We don’t want to hear loud, trashy, pounding and screaming when we enter a store; it’s not conducive to shopping. How about trying different music? Please.

Neighborhood trash

We live in the [local road] area of [local town]. We have complained for a long time about disgusting neighbors who shouldn’t be allowed to live in those conditions. [Code enforcement officer] nothing. The place recently burned and now it is even worse. Now there are rats and all kinds of creatures. What do we have to do to get it cleaned up? Maybe my next move will be to the state health department. I have had enough.

Price gouging

Ever do your math and realize how much we’re overcharged and gouged for products? A bottle of water costs X amount. Multiply that by the cost to buy a case. Drinks in restaurants and food prices, just to name a few. Unbelievable profits. Inflation is 5% over the past 3 years down from 8% when costs skyrocketed. Price of gas for delivery? Inflation? Inflation has gone down slightly. Why haven’t costs gone down? They were quick to go up. Why do we accept this?

STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS

No business is too small to be a small business. In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics noted that microbusinesses, which are defined as firms that employ between one and nine employees, accounted for 75 percent of all private-sector employers as recently as 2013.

WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR MOBILE PHONE ETIQUETTE

Don’t interrupt a conversation to text or answer a phone call. Many people now have no reservations about interrupting an ongoing conversation to text someone else or answer an incoming phone call. Such behavior is disrespectful to the person you’re speaking with and can have an adverse effect on your relationship with that person going forward.

COPING WITH THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE WHILE SOCIAL DISTANCING

Seek support from your community. The CDC recommends seeking support from faith-based organizations or other trusted community leaders and friends. While inperson church services may not be available, many local religious leaders have made themselves available to congregants and even non-congregants who may need help grieving. Local community organizations may have grief counselors available to help people cope with loss.

It is all too easy to send children off to school and feel we are doing all we can by simply seeing to it that the kids are not tardy. Jung, a Swiss psychologist of the early 20th century, reminds us that a good example is worth more than great quantities of conversation.

Parents, as well as teachers, should be aware that their attitudes and actions toward life and toward learning, are the most powerful influence on young lives, and be guided accordingly.

We are keenly aware of our responsibility to serve families in immediate need. We also assist those who desire to pre-arrange their own services, well in advance of need. Feel free to ask for our advice and counsel…without any obligation.

QUALITIES TO LOOK FOR IN A POST-RETIREMENT JOB

Pressure-free: Regardless of what retirees did for a living prior to calling it a career, chances are they dealt with work-related stress. In fact, the American Stress Institute reports that 83 percent of workers in the United States suffer from work-related stress, while Statistics Canada reports that 62 percent of Canadian workers say work is their main source of stress. After a lifetime of confronting work-related stress, individuals who want to work in retirement should look for pressure-free opportunities. This is an important quality, as the ASI indicates that stress has been linked to increased rates of heart attack, hypertension and other disorders.
