Fishing in Maine, the Kennebec River

The Kennebec river is one of the most beautiful river in Maine for fly fishing and I think there is nothing better than giving detailed information about where to fish. The Skowhegan Gorge and the “Great Eddy” are a real “Diamond in the Rough”. This section receives relatively little pressure and boasts a surprisingly strong population of stocked brown trout with some rather large fish caught each year. The river in Skowhegan offers a convenient parking, good shore fishing, some wading and good access for small watercraft at the public boat launch just west of Wesserunsett Stream. Being at the bottom of a mile long gorge, The Eddy remains surprisingly cool and very well oxygenated throughout the warmest of periods. Additionally, although not as heavy as some stretches, the Eddy does see some solid hatches including tiny BWOs which hatch through early winter. The biggest issue is the limited wading access. Is The Eddy worth a try? I personally think so and as such, when my time is limited, I stop by, jump out, and throw a few casts! While the Eddy is not a “Destination”, in and of itself, it can be a great stopping off point for anglers heading north who are running out of daylight and want an alternative to the often crowded Shawmut Dam fishery (especially on Friday nights!)

Fairfield/ Shawmut Dam

Very popular with local anglers from central/southern Maine, aggressively promoted by local sports writers and newspapers, and touted by the Maine DIF&W as a “World Class Brown Trout Fishery”, Shawmut Dam is one of the most heavily fished waters in the state. As with most rivers, the hatches on the Kennebec start downriver and move their way up. As such, we will follow them to ensure that our customers are at the right place at the right time! Shawmut is as far downriver as we will go for trout due to the distance and urban nature of the lower fisheries. The float trips in Shawmut are short in distance but the driftboats allow us to access water not normally accessible to the wading fishermen. If Shawmut is your destination, for the unguided angler staying in the area or passing through on their way north, Shawmut offers parking, good public access, relatively safe wading conditions, strong hatches, and decent populations of both stocked and hold-over brown and rainbow trout.

Madison/ The Pines

Just outside Skowhegan the river runs southwest and away from Route 201. It is this section that the Kennebec is furthest away from 201 and out of hearing distance from the procession of log trucks coming down from the north. In Madison at what is known as “The Pines”, we have what is arguably the finest “Walk-In” Brown Trout fishery in the entire state with a semi-remote setting, diverse and

Il fiume Kennebec è uno dei fiumi più belli del Maine per la pesca a mosca e penso che non ci sia nulla di meglio che fornirvi informazioni dettagliate su dove pescare. La Gola di Skowhegan e il “Grande Eddy” sono un vero “diamante allo stato grezzo”. Questo tratto è sottoposto a una pressione di pesca relativamente bassa e vanta una popolazione sorprendentemente cospicua di trote fario, di cui vengono catturati ogni anno alcuni esemplari abbastanza grossi. Il fiume a Skowhegan offre alcuni parcheggi comodi, una buona pesca dalla riva, qualche camminata da fare e un buon accesso per piccoli natanti al porto pubblico che si trova giusto a ovest del ruscello Wesserunsett. Trovandosi sul fondo di una gola lunga un miglio, l’Eddy resta sorprendentemente fresco e molto ben ossigenato nei periodi più caldi dell’anno. Inoltre, anche se non come su alcuni tratti, l’Eddy presenta alcune consistenti schiuse di insetti, compresi i minuscoli BWO, che schiudono all’inizio dell’inverno.

Fairfield/ Diga di Shawmut

Molto popolare tra i pescatori locali del Maine centrale e meridionale, fortemente pubblicizzata dai quotidiani e dagli scrittori sportivi del posto e presentata dal Maine DIF&W come “riserva della trota fario di importanza internazionale”, la diga di Shawmut è una delle acque dove si pesca di più in tutto lo Stato. Come nella maggior parte dei fiumi, le schiuse sul Kennebec cominciano a valle e risalgono. Noi dunque le seguiamo, per assicurarci che i nostri clienti siano al posto giusto al momento giusto! Noi a trote non peschiamo a valle di Shawmut. Le escursioni a Shawmut coprono brevi distanze, ma la barca ci consentirà di accedere a punti normalmente non accessibili a piedi. Se Shawmut è la vostra meta, per i pescatori senza guide che soggiornano nell’area o che ci passano andando verso nord, Shawmut offre

reliable hatches, phenomenal growth rates, large parking and easy wading (in all but the highest water). Between the large pool just downstream of The Pines (The Powerlines) and the lower dam in downtown Madison, there are almost two miles of continuous riffles, pools, runs and drops which, with the exception of a few popular spots, receive little if any fishing pressure. With the abundant Stoneflies, Caddis, Mayflies and Sculpin available, the fish (Mostly Browns with the occasional Rainbow or Salmon) in this section have a Length-to-Weight ratio that is better than any other section of the river.

Solon/ Carratunk Falls

Above the upper dam in Madison, the river runs through a rural and semiremote wooded area with limited shore side development, ancient Native American petroglyths and abundant wildlife including Eagles, Ducks, Beaver, Otter, Deer and the occasional Moose. As in Madison, the river in Solon is far enough away from Route 201 to be out of hearing range of the log trucks! With Browns, Rainbows, Brook Trout and Landlocked Salmon, and 5+ miles of driftable water, this section is arguably the finest “Float” fishery in New England! Between the 201A bridge and the primitive boat launch on the Dump Road in North Anson, there are miles of river with trout scattered throughout the entire length. With miles of river and numerous channels, there is more water than you can effectively fish in a day.

Bingham/ Wyman Dam

Just 20 miles north of the shop in Bingham, you will find Maine’s (and arguably New England’s!) finest trophy “Tailwater” (i.e., Wyman Dam) and one of the only (and

Madison/ I Pini

Appena fuori Skowhegan il fiume scorre a sud-ovest, lontano dalla strada 201. È questo il tratto del Kennebec più lontano dalla 201 e qui non si sentono le file di camion provenienti dal nord. A Madison, in quel luogo che è conosciuto come “I Pini”, abbiamo probabilmente la migliore riserva da trote fario “senza prenotazione” di tutto lo Stato, con un’ambientazione semi-remota, diverse schiuse su cui fare affidamento, fenomenali tassi di crescita e ampi parcheggi. Tra la vasta pool appena a valle dei Pini (gli Elettrodotti) e la diga inferiore al centro di Madison, ci sono almeno due miglia di continue increspature, pool, risalite e discese che, ad eccezione di pochi spot popolari, non sono sottoposti a nessuna o pochissima pressione di pesca. Con le abbondanti mosche Stoneflies (plecotteri), Caddis, Mayflies (efemere) e Sculpin disponibili, i pesci (per lo più fario con occasionali iridee) in questo tratto hanno un rapporto lunghezza-peso che è migliore rispetto a qualsiasi altro tratto del fiume.

Solon/ Cascate di Carratunk

Al di sopra della diga superiore a Madison, il fiume scorre attraverso una zona boschiva rurale e semi-remota con uno sviluppo limitato sulle sue sponde, dove si trovano invece antichi petroglifi dei nativi americani e un’abbondante fauna che comprende aquile, anatre, castori, lontre, cervi e occasionalmente alci. Come a Madison, il fiume a Solon è abbastanza lontano dalla strada 201 per non sentire il rumore proveniente dalle file di camion! Con le fario, le iridee, i salmerini, i salmoni stanziali e le sue oltre 5 miglia di acque su cui andare alla deriva, questo tratto è probabilmente il miglior tratto da mosca secca del New England! Tra il ponte 201A e l’antico ormeggio sulla Dump Road a North Anson, ci sono migliaia di fiumi con trote sparse per tutto il loro corso. Con miglia di fiume e numerosi canali, c’è più acqua di quella dove si possa effettivamente pescare in un giorno.

Bingham/ Diga di Wyman

Appena 20 miglia a nord del negozio di Bingham troverete le migliori “acque grigie” (“Tailwater”) da trofei del Maine (e probabilmente del New England) e una delle zone migliori per trote iridee dell’intero Stato: la diga di Wyman. L’accesso a piedi in questo tratto di fiume è abbastanza buono e si trova alla diga, agli elettrodotti appena sotto la diga sulla sponda occidentale, alla foce del torrente Austin e dai binari abbandonati della ferrovia (ora una pista ciclabile) poco più a sud del vecchio aeroporto Gadabout Gaddis. Bingham è molto popolare anche come tratto da secca, con oltre 3 miglia di raschi e canali intrecciati terminanti nella morta di Solon sopra le cascate di Carratunk, che nel periodo giusto possono offrire un’eccellente pesca con

unquestionably the strongest!) “Wild” Rainbow Trout fisheries found in the state. Wade-In access in this section of river is decent and can be found at the Dam, the Powerlines just below the dam on the west shore, off the mouth of Austin Stream and off the abandon Railroad Tracks (now a bike path) just south of the old Gadabout Gaddis Airport. Please note that wading can be difficult and sometimes dangerous in this section of the river due to the frequent and unpredictable (if you are not familiar with the release schedule) dam releases as well as the loose “marble-sized” gravel bottom and slippery rocks. Bingham is also a very popular Float Trip section with over 3 miles of riffles, runs and braided channels which terminate in the Solon Deadwater above Carratunk Falls which if hit at the right time can offer outstanding dry fly fishing in a “Pond Like” setting.

The Forks/ Carratunk

Above Wyman Lake, the river parallels Route 201 flowing through an otherwise remote valley all the way up to The Forks offering miles of wade-in fishing for primarily “wild” Brook Trout, Landlocked Salmon, the occasional Brown or Rainbow, and Smallmouth Bass. Radically fluctuating water levels from Harris Dam require that the angler fish very early or late in the day in order to take advantage of low-water periods. Additionally, like the stretch below Wyman Dam, the angler must be constantly on the watch for rising water. While not as productive as the river between Shawmut and Wyman Dam, this stretch of river does offer an enjoyable Float Trip (best suited for our raft) through 8+ miles of semi-wilderness continuous riffle water for “wild” native Brook Trout. With miles of freestone riverbed and crystal clear water, this could be the “Madison” of the east!

The Gorge/ East Outlet

Above The Forks, the Kennebec River flows through a remote and rugged gorge with limited and difficult access. The Gorge contains populations of “wild” brook trout and landlocked salmon that can attain trophy sizes. Radically fluctuating water levels from Harris Dam requires that the angler fish very early or late in the day in order to take advantage of low-water periods. Additionally, the angler must be constantly on the watch for rising water (and wearing a life jacket is not a bad idea!). The Kennebec above Indian Pond is actually two rivers, the West and East Outlets, which flow out of Moosehead Lake and into Indian Pond. Of primary interest to the trout fisherman is the East Outlet which boasts spring and fall runs of Landlocked Salmon. Most wading anglers concentrate their efforts on the section of river between Moosehead Lake and the “Sandy Beach” just downstream of the highway bridge on the north shore. Additionally, this is a popular Driftboat section seeing increased traffic each year, particularly in October.

Le Forche/ Carratunk

Al di sopra del lago Wyman, il fiume scorre parallelo alla Strada 201 attraverso una valle remota fino alle Forche, offrendo miglia di pesca a guado principalmente per i salmerini “selvaggi”, i salmoni stanziali, occasionalmente le trote fario o iridee e il pesce persico. I livelli dell’acqua, che fluttuano notevolmente dalla diga di Harris Dam, fanno sì che i pescatori debbano uscire molto presto o tardi, in modo da trarre vantaggio dai momenti della giornata in cui l’acqua è bassa. In più, come nel tratto al di sotto della diga di Wyman, il pescatore deve stare costantemente attento all’acqua che sale.

La Gola

Sopra le Forche, il fiume Kennebec attraversa una gola remota e frastagliata con accesso difficoltoso e limitato. La Gola contiene popolazioni di salmerini “selvaggi” e salmoni stanziali che possono raggiungere dimensioni da trofeo. Siccome i livelli dell’acqua hanno fluttuazioni considerevoli a partire dalla diga di Harris, bisogna pescare molto presto o tardi per potersi avvantaggiare dei periodi in cui l’acqua è bassa. Inoltre, il pescatore deve stare costantemente attento all’acqua che sale (e indossare un giubbotto di salvataggio non è una cattiva idea!). Il Kennebec al di sopra al Laghetto Indiano consiste in realtà in due fiumi, il West e East Outlet, che dal lago di Moosehead sgorgano nel Laghetto Indiano. Di primario interesse per il pescatore di trote è l’East Outlet, che vanta risalite di salmoni stanziali in primavera e in autunno. La maggior parte dei pescatori a guado concentrano i loro sforzi sul tratto del fiume tra il lago di Moosehead e la “Spiaggia Sabbiosa”, giusto a valle del ponte autostradale sulla riva settentrionale. Inoltre, questo è un tratto per barche alla deriva che vede ogni anno sempre più traffico, soprattutto in ottobre.

Si è conclusa la prima edizione di Fly Fishing Festival con risultati positivi che hanno posto le basi e i presupposti per il futuro, preannunciando un interesse internazionale per il territorio trentino e il mondo della pesca, a conferma del potenziale di una proposta green unica nel suo genere per gli appassionati del settore. Particolarmente apprezzata la parte esperienziale, dai corsi di avvicinamento alla pesca offerti dalle principali scuole nazionali quali la Scuola Italiana di Pesca a Mosca, la Claudio Carrara Fly Fishing school e Trentino Fly Club, la Nazionale Italiana di Fly Casting, la European Fly Fishing Association, l'internazionale Game Angling Instructors' Association e la Scuola Nazionale di Lancio UNPeM. Molti gli accompagnatori che hanno approfittato delle attività outdoor proposte per scoprire il territorio delle Giudicarie, provenienti da molte regioni d’Italia, ma anche da Olanda e Germania. L’arrivederci al 2022, per la seconda edizione di Fly Fishing Festival, è già una promessa che verrà sicuramente mantenuta.

THE FIRST EDITION OF THE FLY FISHING FESTIVAL HITS ALL THE RIGHT NOTES: SPECIALISATION, SUSTAINABILITY AND THE LOCAL AREA. THESE ARE THE KEY WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE NEW FORMAT WHICH GOES BEYOND BOUNDARIES.

The first edition of the Fly Fishing Festival draws to a positive close, laying the foundations and conditions for the future, heralding an international interest in the Trentino area and the world of fishing, confirming the potential of a unique, green event for fishing enthusiasts. The experiential part was particularly appreciated, such as the fishing courses offered by leading organisations and national schools, such as the Italian Fly Fishing School, the Claudio Carrara Fly Fishing School and the Trentino Fly Club, the Italian National Fly Casting Group, the European Fly Fishing Association, the international Game Angling Instructors' Association, the National Casting School UNPeM and the Tenkara group. Many of those accompanying the fishermen took advantage of the choice of outdoor activities on offer to get to know the Giudicarie area better. They came from various parts of Italy as well as Holland and Germany. Goodbye then, until 2022, for the second edition of the Fly Fishing Festival, a promise that hs been made and that will definitely be kept.
