Marine Parks of Cuba
E’ di nuovo quel momento dell’anno; finalmente inizio ad intravedere i futuri viaggi di pesca in saltwater. Esamino con cura tutta l’attrezzatura, verifico che non manchi nulla e che tutto sia in ordine; canne, mulinelli, terminali, pinze, abbigliamento, accessori e mosche. Man mano che controllo ogni singolo componente la mente comincia a viaggiare, emergono i ricordi dei viaggi precedenti e cresce l’adrenalina. In particolare, quando apro le scatole delle mosche, sono molte le emozioni che riaffiorano : “ah questa mosca è micidiale”, oppure: “con questa ho preso i pesci
più belli”, e ancora: “e questa? Incredibile i pesci che ho attaccato….”. Ho avuto la fortuna di fare un buon numero di viaggi di pesca in saltwater, perciò ho un ricordo di pesca ben definito per molte delle mosche che ho nelle scatole. Per me è fondamentale scegliere le mosche giuste in ogni viaggio. E’ un aspetto a cui dedico moltissima attenzione. I Parchi Marini di Cuba sono gli hot spots dove ho pescato di più in assoluto. I Jardines de la Reina, Cayo Largo, la Isla de la Joventud, Zapata e Cayo Cruz, sono i luoghi dove ho iniziato e dove ho accumulato la maggior parte della mia esperienza
di pesca a mosca in mare.
Luoghi incredibili, protetti e controllati, dove la pesca commerciale è severamente bandita, dove il numero dei pescatori ammessi è sempre lo stesso da quasi 30 anni e dove è consentita la sola pesca a mosca. La protezione degli ambienti, unita alla gestione sostenibile garantita da Avalon Outdoor, permette agli ecosistemi naturali di godere di grande salute ed ha permesso di creare il primo ed unico “Santuario della Pesca a Mosca in Saltwater”. La grande
quantità di pesci presenti ed il livello altissimo di pesca a mosca che producono questi spots sono solo una naturale conseguenza della Gestione Sostenibile e della protezione delle aree marine.
Nei parchi marini di Cuba sono molte le mosche utilizzabili con successo, tuttavia ce ne sono alcune che nel tempo si sono rivelate migliori di altre. Ecco quindi la mia personale selezione delle 8 top mosche per pescare nei parchi marini di Cuba:
That time of the year has come again; at last I begin to foresee my future fishing trips in saltwater. I carefully examine all the equipment, check that nothing is missing and that everything is fine: rods, reels, leaders, pliers, clothing, accessories and flies. While checking every single item, my mind starts wondering, memories of my previous trips come up and adrenalin increases. In particular, when I open my fly boxes, a lot of emotions emerge: “ah, this fly is deadly,” or “with this one I caught the most beautiful fish,” and again, “what about this one? Incredible how many fish I lured….” I have been on many fishing trips in saltwater, so I have well-defined memories of most flies in my boxes.
For me it is essential to choose the right flies for each trip. It is an aspect I pay a lot of attention to.
The marine parks of Cuba are absolutely the hot spots where I have fished the most. The Jardines de la Reina, Cayo Largo, la Isla de la Joventud, Zapata and Cayo Cruz
are the places where I began and where I have collected most of my fly fishing experience in saltwater. Commercial fishing is strictly forbidden in these incredible, protected and controlled places, where the number of fishermen admitted has always been the same for almost 30 years and where only fly fishing is allowed. The preservation of the environment, together with the sustainable management guaranteed by Avalon Outdoor, enables natural ecosystems to enjoy good health and this has allowed to create the first and unique “Sanctuary for fly
fishing in saltwater. The big quantity of fish and the top level fly fishing in these spots are only a natural consequence of the Sustainable Management and preservation of marine areas.
In the marine parks of Cuba, a lot of flies can be used successfully. However experience has shown that some are better than others. Here is my personal selection of the 8 top flies for fishing in the marine parks of Cuba:
1- THE AVALON FLY La Avalon fly nasce a Cuba, in particolare nelle acque di Cayo Largo, dove Mauro Ginevri, insieme alle guide del posto, inventa e sviluppa questo particolare “Shrimp Pattern” pensando ad una mosca dedicata ai Permit della zona. Quello che probabilmente non sapevano è che la Avalon Fly si rivelerà estremamente efficace in tutti i Parchi Marini di Cuba (e non solo). Ad oggi sono più di 900 i Permit catturati con questa mosca. L’unica nota stonata di questa imitazione di gambero è che piace tantissimo anche a Bonefish, Jacks, Snappers, Barracuda e Aguglie, che non esitano ad attaccarla a volte letteralmente anticipando il Permit di pochi attimi… provare per credere!
2- THE TARPON TOAD E’ la mosca ideale per insidiare i Tarpon residenti nei parchi marini di Cuba. Le varianti di colore Tan/Trancio Bianco/ Chartreuse, oppure Full Tan funzionano molto bene. I Tarpon
residenti sono pesci che vivono tutto l’anno in queste aree. Sono esemplari di taglia compresa tra circa i 5 ed i 15 kg, vengono definiti “Baby” e si possono insidiare con una canna 9’#10.
3- THE GOTCHA FLY Probabilmente è la mosca più famosa della storia per la pesca dei Bonefish. Conosciuta e replicata in tutto il mondo in molte varianti, è una mosca semplice ed estremamente efficace
nelle acque di tutti gli oceani. Anche nei parchi marini di Cuba la Gotcha dimostra il motivo di tanta celebrità.
4- THE FLEXO CRAB Nato per pescare pesci in altre zone del mondo, il Flexo Crab si adatta perfettamente alle flats di Cuba. Ho avuto il piacere di provare il Flexo Crab nelle acque di Cayo Cruz per la prima volta nel 2013. Da allora ho usato e testato diverse varianti di Flexo Crab nella pesca dei Permit in diversi hot
1- THE AVALON FLY The Avalon fly was created in Cuba, in particular on the waters of Cayo Largo, where Mauro Ginevri, together with the local guides, invented and developed this special “Shrimp Pattern” based on a fly for the Permit of that area. What they did not probably know is that the Avalon Fly would turn out to be extremely efficient in all marine parks of Cuba (and not only there). Today more than 900 Permit have been caught with this fly. The only discordant note in this shrimp imitation is that even Bonefish, Jacks, Snappers, Barracuda and eagles like it very much and they do not hesitate to attack it, sometimes even a few seconds before the Permit does… seeing is believing!
2- THE TARPON TOAD It is the ideal fly to lure the tarpon living in the marine parks of Cuba. The color options Tan/ Trancio Bianco/Chartreuse or Full Tan work very well. The resident tarpon are fish that live all year round in these areas. Specimens are between 5 and 15 kg, they are called “Baby” and can be lured with a 9’#10 rod.
3- THE GOTCHA FLY It is probably the most famous fly for bonefish fishing. It is wellknown and remade all over the world in several variants, and an easy fly which is extremely efficient in the ocean waters. Also in the marine parks of Cuba, the Gotcha proves why it is so celebrated.
4- THE FLEXO CRAB Born to be used for other areas of the world, the Flexo Crab is perfectly suitable for the flats of Cuba. I had the pleasure to test the Flexo Crab in the water of Cayo Cruz for the first time in 2013. Since then, I have used and tested several variants of the Flexo Crab for permit fishing in various hot spots of Cuba. The results were amazing.
5- THE BAITFISH FLY It is forbidden by law to go and fish in Cuba without taking at least a dozen baitfish flies with you…the reason is easy: the water of the marine parks of Cuba is very rich in forage fish, in particular sardines, which make literally all predators go crazy. With this fly you can lure successfully: tarpon, snook, various types of jack, barracuda, pargo, cubere, groupers and sharks. The ideal size for this fly is a length of about 10 cm, and
5- THE BAITFISH FLY E’ vietato dalla legge recarsi a pescare a Cuba senza portare almeno una dozzina di Baitfish Fly…. il motivo è semplice: le acque dei parchi Marini di Cuba sono ricchissimi di pesce foraggio, in particolare di sardine che fanno letteralmente impazzire tutti i predatori. Con questa mosca si possono insidiare con successo: Tarpon, Snook, vari tipi di Jack, Barracuda, Pargo, Cubere, Cernie e Squali. La misura ideale per questa mosca è circa 10 cm di lunghezza, il colore è scontato ;-)
6- THE TARPON BUNNY La Tarpon Bunny è la classica mosca da Tarpon. Questa è la mosca ideale per i Tarpon migratori che transitano nei Parchi Marini di Cuba da fine marzo a fine giugno. Gli abbinamenti di colori rosso/nero e nero/viola sono i più comuni, ma ci si può sbizzarrire: arancio/ viola, bianco/chartreuse, Full Tan. Spesso anche Jack Crevalle, Barracuda, Snapper e altri pesci attaccano con voracità questa mosca.
7- THE CUBAN SHRIMP Uso questa mosca con continuità da alcuni anni per pescare i Bonefish. Ho avuto ottimi risultati in tutte le acque di Cuba. E’ la mosca ideale con cui insidiare i Bonefish di taglia, che si muovono in piccoli gruppi da 3-4 pesci, oppure esemplari singoli. Semplicemente, non si può farne a meno.
8- THE BRUSH FLY Utilizzata moltissimo in altri mari, ho provato per la prima volta la Brush Fly ai Jardines de la Reina quasi per caso qualche anno fa. Da quel momento non ho più fatto un viaggio in saltwater senza avere nelle scatole una ventina di Brush Fly verdi e bianche. Una mosca che si è rivelata un vero e proprio jolly tra le rocce, i coralli e i canali dei parchi marini di Cuba. Tarpon, Jack Crevalle, Horse-Eye, Cubere, Pargo, Barracuda, Cernie e Squali sono le specie che adorano la Brush Fly. Consigliata una buona scorta di mosche.

6- THE TARPON BUNNY The Tarpon Bunny is the classical tarpon fly. It is the ideal fly for migratory tarpon passing through the marine parks of Cuba from late March to late June. The color combinations red/black and black/violet are the most common ones, but you can indulge in: orange/violet, white/chartreuse, and Full Tan.Also jack crevalle, barracuda, snapper and other fish often attack this fly greedily.
7- THE CUBAN SHRIMP I have been using this fly with no interruption for a few years to fish for bonefish. I achieved very good results in all the waters of Cuba. It is the ideal fly to lure good-sized bonefish, which move
in small groups of 3-4 fishes, or single specimens. You cannot simply do without it.
8- THE BRUSH FLY The Brush Fly is very used in other seas and I tried it for the first time at the Jardines de la Reina, almost by chance a few years ago. Since then, I have never made a saltwater trip again without having about 20 green and white Brush flies in my boxes. This fly has turned out to be a real jolly
among the rocks, corals and canals of the marine parks of Cuba. Tarpon, jack crevalle, horse-eye, cubere, pargo, barracuda, groupers and sharks are the species that adore the Brush Fly. A good reserve of flies is recommended.
