Season Begins

‫بدأ الموسم‬

It literally happened this morning, the same in which I write this note to you. After a scorching summer, and these last weeks of brutal humidity that was unseasonably late for October, I walked outside this morning to a blissful, cool dry breeze. For any Gulf resident, the significance of this breeze cannot be overstated. It signifies, at long last, the turn of the season. It signifies sunny but pleasant days by the pool or beach, barbeques in the evenings, and camping trips. Most of all, though, it signifies the return of the boating season! Sure, we published a feature on summer cruises on the Indian Ocean in Oman with blissful water temperatures, but for those of us languishing in the Arabian Gulf, it was hot air out of the water, and hot soup in it. Of course, there might be another hot spell or two, but Autumn is finally upon us, and Winter Is Coming. And unlike in the well-known TV series, those words don’t inspire dread, but relief, and excitement for the months of outdoor activities to come. So, pour through the pages here in Hadag, and find out how you can make the most of the sublime weather. There’s a new wakeboarding boat available for charter from BISS Marine in Amwaj Islands, Bahrain. If you’re looking for a boat of your own, there’s the Qatar International Boat Show coming up in November that might give you some ideas. Unveils Project

Hessen’s Project Nova is the ground breaking new hybrid 50m superyacht launched recently at the Monaco Yacht Show, 2015. Project Nova is a Fast Displacement Hull, a concept Heesen were first to develop with the launch of the Galactica Star back in 2013. Unlike Galactica Star, Nova is not designed for exceptionally high speeds, but instead uses the ultra efficient and easily driven hull form at the lower speeds typically associated with traditional displacement hulls, to achieve vastly lower fuel consumption. To give you an idea, at 12 knots Nova has a fuel consumption of 98 litres per hour (excluding generators), and at 10 knots this reduces to a staggering 57.5 litres per hour – this for a yacht 50m long, displacing 315 tons and with a gross tonnage of 499. In addition, she has a cruising range (at 12 knots) of 3,750 miles with a fuel capacity of just 45,000 litres. All of this is achieved with a pair of MTU 12V 2000 M61 engines putting out 600 kW each, which might not sound like much, but when mated to twin DC water cooled DC electric shaft motors of 127kW each through the hybrid propulsion system, you begin to see how such impressive performance is achieved. Nova can cruise at speeds up to 9 knots using the generators alone. The added benefit to these hybrid engines is the noise. Project Nova is exceptionally quiet for a 50m superyacht. Sunseeker Reveals 95 Yacht Sunseeker International has released the first exclusive CGI images of the eagerly anticipated new 95 Yacht currently under production in Dorset, UK, and set for launch in Spring 2016. Its striking lines and innovative layout also showcase the fresh design direction that Sunseeker’s next generation of larger models will take. The standout feature is its unique main deck layout with a special master cabin triplex configuration for even greater flexibility and freedom onboard. The 95 yacht is based on the classic deep V hull, enabling it to cruise at up to 24 knots or accelerate up to 28 knots, depending on engine option.

Organized by the French publishing group LuxMediaGroup, the World Yachts Trophies are considered among the most prestigious awards in the industry. Fairline launches the Targa 53 GT Fairline yachts have announced the world premiere of the Fairline Targa 53GT express cruiser, which was unveiled at the 2015 Southampton Boat Show in front of VIP guests, press and dealers. The unveiling marks the launch of not just a new model, but an entirely new concept. Design Director at Fairline, Andrew Pope, comments, “The use of smart design principles throughout the boat eliminates the owner’s need to compromise. The owner will receive unrivalled flexibility in layout and complete confidence in its construction and features.” Offering excellent sea-keeping in all conditions, the Targa 53GT offers a choice of two shaft driven engine options from Volvo. Up to 725bhp is available through shaft drives, and the boat can reach 33 knots in a fully loaded state, and boasts high capacity fuel tanks for longer range.

Glider Yachts Receives Expert Accreditation Pioneering design makes for exceptionally smooth sailing.

Glider Yachts Limited, the quintessentially British luxury yacht manufacturer, has received the highest level of boating industry accreditation, having been assessed by both HPi Verification Services and the Wolfson Unit for Marine Technology and Industrial Aerodynamics. Yacht Design of Antalya. She is a full-displacement motor yacht with a high-tensile steel hull and aluminium superstructure. She was initially launched in April of this year, and even that story is unique, as it was the first time ever that a yacht of this kind had been launched by heavy lifter ship. The IRIMARI was lifted from her cradle on the dock and gently lowered into the water by two 700-tonne cranes from the heavy lifter HHL Valparaiso, in a manoeuvre that had all involved holding their breath until it was successfully completed. The vessel weighed in bang on target, and settled into her lines perfectly with no need for ballasting. IRIMARI is 63 metres long, with a maximum beam of 12.34m, and a gross tonnage of 1460GT. She sleeps 12 guests, with a crew of 16 plus captain. IRIMARI is capable of cruising beyond 5000 miles at a speed of 12 knots, and reaching a top speed of 17 knots, thanks to propulsion from twin MTU 12V4000M63 1500kW engines.

The Magellano 66 is built on the same foundation that makes all Magellano Collection yachts so special: the ‘Dual Mode’ hull. The goal is to offer a versatile boat that provides a comfortable ride even in moderate to rough seas. Accomplishing this required developing keels that were profoundly different from those found on planing hulls. Magellano hulls soften the impact of waves, cutting through them with the vertical bow. At the same time, the significant forward volume minimizes pitch and provides constant buoyancy support, even when the boat is descending the trough of a wave. As a result, the water has a hard time reaching the main deck, providing a sense of security both to those piloting the vessel and their guests. The Magellano 66 takes this philosophy even further with surprisingly spacious interiors for its 20 x 5.4 meters. The main deck is all on one level; it has a large sliding door facing out over the cockpit all the way to the bow where the pilot station and galley are located. The main deck features elegance, functionality and a breath-taking view of the horizon. Highlights include a large L-shaped sofa facing an impressive bar cabinet, up to 50’’ TV cabinet, and a dining table oriented across beam. All this comes with the standard version of the Magellano 66. There is also a Navetta version. Positioning the internal stair amidship means the saloon/ dining area can be separated from the piloting and forward galley area, for unprecedented privacy surpassing that of even bigger boats. The crew can carry out their jobs without having to access any of the boat owner and guest spaces. The door to the side walkway is from the galley, allowing the crew to reach their own cabin without crossing the saloon. At the same time, the boat owner and guests can access the saloon from their accommodations, without having to cross the galley and piloting station. On the outside your eye is drawn to the integrated terrace to the extreme aft of the flybridge, a design detail that puts the Magellano 66 in the big leagues. culmination of a spectacular open deck, the terrace can be outfitted for the perfect relaxation environment, complete with comfortable cushions, scenic lighting, and an awning to shade the living area. On the lower deck, there is a large owner suite at full beam. Here, the spacious quarters are bathed in natural light for an elegant but also practical space with ample stowage. The Nor-Tech 390 Sport Open

If you are looking for one of the best all-round centre console layout pleasure cruisers on the market, then you won’t do much better than the Nor-Tech 390 Sport Open.

In the 390 Sport, Nor-Tech have combined the perfect blend of features, comfort and luxury to satisfy anyone looking to cruise, entertain or dive, with plenty of fishing amenities for the serious angler. The 390 has even become a popular choice for yacht owners to be used as a towing tender. The best thing about the centre console boat layout is the complete open-air experience, with excellent allround visibility provided by the high-position of the captain’s console in relation to the deck. The other advantage is space – there is plenty of room to move around in the 390 Sport Open, which is great if you’re wrestling a fish or have a group of divers with tanks on board. The version you see here boasts a three outboard engine setup, with triple Mercury 400hp Racing Verados engines putting out a combined 1200hp. Some of the features you’ll find on the boat are a premium Fusion soundsystem, a remote chrome spotlight, LED running lights and cockpit lighting, and more. You also get an awesome carbon-fibre dash panel with Mercury DTS controls, and twin 5” GPS Garmin 8215 units. Further practicality comes from three self-draining floor storage compartments for equipment or fish, and there’s even a baitwell, in addition to a fresh water transom shower. The 390 Sport is also available in a cuddy cabin layout capable of sleeping 2, at the expense of the forward seating area. As an all-rounder, you’ll find few boats better than the 390 Sport. The open layout and equipment setup make it excellent as a pleasure, fishing or diving cruiser, and yet there is enough power from either engine layout option to tow wakeboards and waterskiers, or simply go for an exhilarating high speed cruise. All this quality does, however, come at a price. The 390 Sport is one of the more expensive centre consoles out there, but in this case, you really do get what you pay for! One of the most influential photographers in the Middle East, H.E. Ali Khalifa bin Thalith was appointed the Secretary General of the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award by HRH the Crown Prince of Dubai. He holds diplomas in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography from the London Academy, and French language and literature from the University of Montpellier, France. Can you tell us briefly about your profession and your field of expertise?

I am a professional photographer. I have a variety of technical experience, but I have concentrated more on nature and underwater wildlife photography. What attracted you to focusing on aquatic environment?

Childhood friends who I enjoyed the sea with, and my experiences with regards to my first discovery of the world, as learning to swim was my first major challenge. The sea is volatile and shrouded in mystery, which inspired me in a positive way, and I wanted to discover the mysteries hidden in the depths. Can you tell us the story of your involvement in the world of photography?

My relationship with the camera came after my relationship with the sea, where filming was the only way to document visually what I was seeing in the depths of the ocean. Professionalism in photography made me see God’s marvellous creation in a better way, and I wanted to convey this splendour to the world. Then I later found that subjects that deserve visual documentation on our planet are not only in the sea. What are some of the most important moments in your career?

There are many important moments in my life, but one remains unique, which is the confidence granted by HRH the Crown Prince of Dubai, who assigned to me the position of Secretary General of the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award. What advice would you give to young people who want to practice underwater photography?

You must be able to photograph out of the water first, and then get courses in scuba diving and choose the appropriate places, in addition to cameras and accessories suitable for underwater photography. And I advise them to gain experience from experts photographers in underwater photography where there is a fundamental cognitive stock that must be acquired before they build their own experiences. What are your plans for the future?

The future must be pretty amazing! I work according to a philosophy that does not believe in the limits of human ingenuity. Seeing Doha by Dhow

For a unique and authentic cultural experience, few can top a cruise along the coast in a traditional Qatari dhow.

The Arabian dhow has been plying its trade along the Gulf ’s coast and as far afield as Africa and Asia for centuries. Hardy, seaworthy and tested by time, the dhow can trace its roots as far back as ancient China, around 600BC. It was spread throughout Asia by Chinese explorers, and adopted by many local sailors and fishermen as their vessel of choice. The dhow is thought to have been brought to the Gulf by Yemeni and Omani sailors, and from here went on to ply its trade along the coasts of East Africa. Dhows are still used as fishing and small cargo vessels to this day, but nowadays they also serve another highly popular purpose – as vessels for pleasure cruises for tourists and foreign residents looking for a unique and unmistakeably Middle Eastern experience. One such cruise is the Doha Dhow Cruise offered by Qatar International Adventures (QIA). The cruise departs from Qatar’s wellknown dhow harbour, near the Museum of Islamic Arts on the Corniche. From there, it follows a leisurely cruise to the picturesque Safliya Island, just off the coast of Doha near the tip of The Pearl, Qatar. The dhow drops anchor a few hundred feet from shore, and from there, you will enjoy a stunning view of the skyline of Doha’s West Bay and The Pearl, Qatar, and you can enjoy a leisurely couple of hours sunbathing, swimming and enjoying the BBQ provided whilst listening to your own selection of music. The dhow then retraces the same route as the sun begins to set, allowing for more breathtaking views of the Doha skyline, and one last glimpse of the impressive Museum of Islamic Arts, before returning to the dhow port. QIBS 2015

Three Years of Success Doha is gearing up for the third edition of the Qatar International Boat Show 2015, which promises to be the biggest and best yet!

Following the resounding success of the second edition of the Qatar International Boat Show in 2014, QIBS 2015 will be held from 10-14 November in Mourjan Marinas – Lusail City, under the auspices of H.E. Sheikh Abdullah Bin Naser Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Prime Minister and Interior Minister of the State of Qatar. With over 90 exhibitors and 75 boats on show, last year’s event proved to be a success well beyond everyone’s expectations. The number of visitors rose by 14% from 10,500 in 2013 to over 12,000 in 2014, and the 2015 event is projected to exceed expectations once again. In addition, for this year, QIBS 2015 has been granted the status of “UFI Approved Event”, making it the first ever approved event to be held in Qatar as a member of UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry. At the same time, Snowcomms – the organisers of the Qatar International Boat Show – has been approved as a full member of UFI in the category of “Exhibition Organisers”. The 90-year-old Union of International Fairs (UFI) is the world’s leading 56

association of trade fair organizers that aims to serve the world’s exhibition industry and promote the unique value of trade fairs. It was originally set up to develop cooperation among European international trade fairs in order to revitalise international commerce after World War I. With the Middle East marine market growing rapidly, the Qatar International Boat Show serves as an ideal maritime industry networking platform and a key business driver for the marine sector, boosting the regional marine industry. Within the marine sector, a series of projects that will offer hundreds of new berths and support services for all boating enthusiasts are currently under development. Mourjan Marinas

Mourjan Marinas is a Dubai-based company leading the maritime sector in the Middle East, and a Marina Industry Association member. Owned by Qatari company Ghanim Bin Saad Al Saad and Sons Holdings (GSSG), the company’s aim is to create unforgettable marinas and yachting lifestyle destinations which offer a sense of place for owners, crew and visitors. In addition to the two facilities in Qatar, Mourjan Marinas also operate the Almouj Marina, in the Al Mouj Muscat development in the Sultanate of Oman. Almouj Marina is a premier marina facility and flagship yachting destination accommodating yachts from 10 to 40 metres.

Mourjan Marinas – Lusail City

Construction work on Mourjan Marinas – Lusail City started in 2010 and the marina welcomed its first yacht in June 2011. In 2015 it was awarded as the Leading Marina Developer in the GCC’ in The World of Yachts Recognition Awards for Excellence, AMIA, while in 2014 it was awarded a regional-first marine industry International Achievement Award with the Clean Marina accreditation. The marina was also awarded Boat Owner Middle East’s ‘Most Interesting Marine Development’ in December 2013. For these reasons, it was selected as the home of the Qatar International Boat Show for 2014 and 2015, and is becoming the port of choice for marine leisure operators. The marina includes three on-water lounge areas totalling more than 17,205 square feet, which can host a gathering of 25 up to a larger event of 130. The marina’s lounge areas feature contemporary shade structures and are designed and built as the perfect setting to host a range of events including seminars, celebration parties, fashion shows, photo shoots and receptions. It features 142 modern floating marina berths that can host yachts of 8-40 metres in length. Unique ideas such as the ‘Mourjan Moments’ initiative are what make their marinas stand out. They create memorable experiences for boaters and visitors by surprising them with unexpected treats. The light hearted initiative has been rolled out across all of Mourjan Marinas flagship destinations in Muscat and Qatar, whereby they offer customers complementary fresh fruits, popcorn, cold water and many more treats during the weekend. Mourjan Marinas - Lusail city is also home to a first-of-kind experiment to investigate the use of floating mangroves for ‘carbon sequestration’ – the capturing of carbon emissions. Announced in April 2013, it is a joint initiative between the UNESCO Doha Office, Mourjan Marinas and Lusail Real Estate Development Company. The results of this pioneering experiment will help shape understanding on mitigating climate change as scientists will see if the floating mangroves have the potential to make a significant contribution to reducing atmospheric carbon levels. 58

The Marinas of

the Pearl The Pearl-Qatar is well established as one of the most prestigious addresses in Doha, offering a glamorous combination of luxury accommodation and waterfront living.

A Centre of Marine Leisure The growth in demand for berths on The Pearl – Qatar is buoyed by the quality facilities offered by the marinas along with their proximity to a wide range of restaurants, shopping and retail services. It is also thanks to the marinas receiving a number of accolades, including the prestigious 5 Gold Anchors from the Yacht Harbour Association, and the International Council of Marine Industry Association’s (ICOMIA) Clean Marina standard. However, it’s perhaps the impressive range of leisure activities now available at the marinas that is the biggest draw. These include: RYA Training

Ronáutica has partnered with two locally-based Royal Yachting Association accredited sea schools to offer a wide range of RYA courses to marina clients, yacht crew and Doha residents. Courses are held in the comfortable board room of the Harbour Masters Office with practical skills performed in the waters surrounding the Pearl. Pan Fried Gulf Red Mullet

Ingredients

Three fillet Red Mullet Olive oil Salt and pepper 6 to 8 thin slices eggplant Frying oil 10 pieces cherry tomato Half red onion finely chopped (Brunoise) 3 cloves roasted garlic Lemongrass finely chopped (Brunoise) Two fresh lemon peels finely chopped (Brunoise) Two star anise Small handful fresh marjoram One roasted red capsicum

Directions:

Make sure all the scales and pin-bones have been removed from the red mullet. Put a large non-stick frying pan over a moderate heat and add a little olive oil. Lay the fish in the frying pan skin-side down and press down gently using a fish spatula. When the fish is done, season it with a little lemon juice and flaky sea salt then remove it to a tray so it doesn’t overcook.

Tomato Jam:

Fill a bowl with ice and water and set it next to the stove. Working in batches, drop several tomatoes into the boiling water. Watch for their skins to start to wrinkle and split, then scoop them out with a slotted spoon and transfer them to the ice water bath. Then gently pull away the skins. Put a pan over medium-low heat and add two tablespoons of olive oil. Add the diced onions and roasted garlic, brunoise lemongrass and the lemon skin brunoise with two star anise together and cook gently with a pinch of salt. After three minutes add the roasted capsicum and peeled cherry tomatoes and stir them occasionally to make sure they cook evenly and aren’t burning. Take out the pan and cover the top with baking paper. Preheat the oven to 180 degree Celsius and put the pan in for 25 to 30 minutes until the tomatoes are concentrated, and finish with the chopped fresh marjoram

Eggplant chips:

Thin slice the eggplants by using the mandolin or slicer machine. Heat oil in a deep-fryer to 150 degrees C. Fry the thin slices of eggplants . Once they start turning golden, remove and drain on paper towels. Continue until all of the slices are fried. Season with additional salt if desired.

‫طريقة التحضير‬ ‫في البداية يجب إزالة العظام من سمك‬ . ‫السلطان ابراهيم‬ ‫نضع السمك في المقالة على نار متوسطة إلى‬ ‫ومن ثم الضغط‬، ‫منخفضة مع القليل من زيت الزيتون‬ .‫على السمك برفق باستخدام ملعقة األسماك‬ ‫ يتم إضافة القليل من عصير‬، ‫وحين يجهز السمك‬ .‫ومن ثم يوضع في الطبق‬،‫الليمون وملح البحر‬ :‫صلصة الطماطم‬ ‫ومن‬.‫يتم ملئ وعاء من الثلج والماء ووضعه بجانب الفرن‬ ‫ثم يتم وضع الطماطم في الماء المغلي حتى يتجعد‬ ‫ ومن ثم نقل الطماطم برفق‬.‫ويتشقق قشر الطماطم‬ .‫ وتتم إزالة قشر الطماطم‬،‫إلى الماء المثلج‬ ‫يتم تجهيز المقالة على نار متوسطة ومنخفضة مع‬ ‫ وثم تتم إضافة‬،‫إضافة ملعقتين من زيت الزيتون‬ ‫مكعبات البصل والثوم المشوي باإلضافة إلى الليمون‬ .‫والينسون والقليل من الملح‬ ‫وبعد ثالث دقائق تتم إضافة الفلفل مع الطماطم ويتم‬ . ‫تحريكها بين الحين واآلخر‬ ‫ويتم الطبخ‬،‫ درجة مئوية‬180 ‫يسخن الفرن على درجة‬ . ‫ دقيقة‬30 ‫ و‬25 ‫لمدة تتراوح بين‬ :‫رقائق الباذنجان‬ ‫يتم تقطيع الباذنجان باستخدام المندولين أو آلة‬ ‫ درجة‬150 ‫ ثم يتم تسخين المقالة على حرارة‬.‫التقطيع‬ ‫ وعند االنتهاء منه‬.‫ ومن ثم تقلى شرائح الباذنجان‬،‫مئوية‬ .‫تتبل الشرائح بالملح‬ ‫وبعدها يتم نشر البارميزان على ورقة الزبدة ويطهى‬ .‫ دقيقة ليكون البارميزان هشًا‬90 ‫في الفرن لمدة‬ ‫ ولوبستر‬،‫ويقدم الهليون المشوي مع اللحم‬ .‫كروستيالنت‬

Directions: Red mullet

Ingredients

100g Fillet of red mullet very fraiche 25cl Olive oil 6 pcs Roma tomato 1 pcs Shallot olive 75g Balsamic vinegar 100g Japanese pearl 1 pcs aubergine (cubed 2cm) 1 pcs courgette 1 pcs red onion 5 cl Olive oil 15g Basil leaves Salt and pepper

Fill a bowl with ice and water and set it next to the stove. Working in batches, drop several tomatoes into the boiling water. Watch for their skins to start to wrinkle and split, then scoop them out with a slotted spoon and transfer them to the ice water bath. Put a pan over medium low heat and add two table spoon olive oil, add the diced onions and after three minutes add the peeled roma tomatoes and stir them occasionally to make sure they cook evenly and aren’t burning, take out the pan and cover the top with baking paper. Preheat the oven to 180 degree Celsius and put the pan for 25 to 30 minutes until the tomatoes are concentrated, and finished with the chopped fresh basil.

Put oil in in a pot with the sliced garlic cloves to a temperature of 90 degrees. Add balsamic vinegar and set aside to cool down. Cook the Japanese pearl with water, cool down and add it to the balsamic mixture.

Put cling film on top of the microwave-safe plate. Place the fresh basil leaves on the plate, make sure they don’t overlap. Spray the basil leaves with a cooking spray. Sprinkle with salt. Remove gently and arrange gently on a small tray.

The Ghibli represents the entry-level model in the Maserati range. Interestingly, it is also the first time that a Ghibli has been a four-door model, with the previous two incarnations of the Maserati Ghibli, one generation from the 60s and one from the 90s, both being two-door coupes. The name ‘Ghibli’ is derived from the Libyan word for a hot desert wind, and evokes the mysterious romance of the Middle Eastern desert. As such, it should be particularly suited to this region! Maserati have come on leaps and bounds with their 2015 model range. They continue to boast that exotic Italian style, but have now introduced build quality to the equation, making them a very tempting option. The Ghibli is beautiful both without and within. From the outside, it boasts that classic Maserati styling with the big ‘shark’s nose’ grille and smooth sweeping lines. However, it still looks like a car of this day and age, with an aggressive stance exuding an aura of power and speed, and it is a pleasure to behold. Inside, the beauty continues – the current generations of Maseratis boast the finest-looking interiors of any I’ve seen from the brand to date. With smooth, curving lines and plush leather surfaces wherever you look, it screams luxury, and, most importantly, quality, with a well-built feel to everything that older generations just didn’t have. To drive, the Ghibli combines a smooth, refined ride with impressive handling and power on tap to create car that is truly a joy to drive. All petrol-engined versions of the Ghibli boast Maserati’s twin-turbo 3.0l V6. On this model, the standard Ghibli, the V6 puts out 345hp, and just over 500Nm of torque, and it will hit 100km/h in 5.5 seconds, so it is most definitely no slouch. The excellent ride and handling come courtesy of the double-wishbone front suspension and the five-arm multilink system at the back, which combine to create a sporty and yet comfortable ride. Our only problem with this Ghibli is the fact that we’ve also driven the Ghibli S Q4. On THAT model, the same 3.0 twin-turbo V6 puts out 410 horses and 550Nm of torque through an all-wheel-drive transmission, which are figures in supercar territory. It will also hit 100km/h in 4.8 seconds, which is 5.2 seconds quicker than the standard Ghibli, and do so with a much more soul-stirring howl from the quad tailpipes. The standard Ghibli is a beautiful car in its own right, but predictably the S Q4 would be our Ghibli of choice. It’s sharper, faster, louder, and just so much more ‘Maserati’!

As practised divers are aware, scuba diving is a safe and exciting sport as long as you can rely on your equipment and observe a few basic rules: never dive alone; always ensure that you have a backup of your vital technical systems; and keep a close check on current depth, maximum depth attained during the dive, and dive time. For the first rule, you have your dive buddy; for the second, your spare demand valve, or octopus; and for everything else, the new Aquatimer Deep Three from IWC. Because if the electronics in your dive computer fail, the mechanical depth gauge and dive timer from Schaffhausen offers a reliable backup system for calculating all aspects of your dive. The Mechanical Depth Gauge

In both the Aquatimer Deep Two and the new Deep Three, the pressure-metering system is housed in a large second crown on the left-hand side of the case, protected by a bow. Water pressure acts directly on a membrane in the crown and pushes a pin towards the interior of the case. This movement operates the lever system that integrates the two indicators. During a dive, the blue depth indicator moves with increasing or decreasing depth across the white scale and always shows current depth. The red indicator remains at the deepest point attained during the dive, to a maximum of 50 metres. This figure is vital for calculating any necessary decompression stops and, together with the other data, gives the experienced diver all the information he needs to complete the dive safely. Thanks to its titanium case, the Aquatimer Deep Three is lighter than its predecessor in stainless steel. The SuperLumiNova coating guarantees excellent legibility no matter how poor the visibility. In addition, the use of twin colours makes it easier for divers to keep their bearings in the dark. The displays relevant to the dive itself, such as depth, dive time and the minute and seconds displays are green, while the hour hand and indices are blue. The Parrot Hydrofoil is an ingenious new drone that operates both on the water and in the air. It boasts a clever hydrofoil hull with a detachable aerial drone that also acts as propulsion for the hull. Once the engines are on, the upper part of the Hydrofoil positions perpendicularly to the nautical structure. Thanks to the four propellers of the Minidrone, it glides through the water and stays about 2 inches above the surface with amazing stability and agility. As the water resistance is reduced, it can reach the maximum speed of 5.4 knots (6 mph) and turn in a flash without capsizing. The Hydrofoils can be separated from their nautical structure in order to fly through the air and do complex aerial acrobatics, all the while capturing images and video. Parrot Hydrofoils are piloted using Bluetooth Smart from the FreeFlight 3 App. Available on both iOS and Android, it’s a tried and tested piece of smartphone or tablet software that allows for easy control. However, while one is initially impressed by this clever little drone, a closer look does turn up some major drawbacks. Firstly, it only has seven minutes of playtime before you’ll have to plug it in for a fast charge of 25 minutes, which isn’t a great battery life. We can’t imagine how anyone would be able to catch ‘that perfect shot’ with a seven-minute window! Secondly, the camera is a 480x640 Snapshot VGA, so it’s only capable of taking still imagery.
