National Heart Month Celebrate a Healthy Heart Keep the beat strong and eat to live with diet and nutrition. Cooking up heart health requires no secret ingredient. Here are some tips to help you make healthier meal choices for your family. Balance your daily food choices. Think of your eating plan as a pyramid with the base forming the foundation for good nutrition. The foods you should eat most often form the bottom of the pyramid, and the foods you eat less of are at the top.
• • • •
Grains comprise the first level of the pyramid, with bread, cereal, rice and pasta as its components. Vegetables share the second level of the food pyramid with Fruits. The third level consists of Dairy which includes milk, yogurt and cheese, and Protein from meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs and nuts. At the very top of the pyramid in the fourth level are the items you should use sparingly — fats, oils and sweets.
You will notice that the bottom two levels, or over half of your daily food intake, are fiber. These foods are plant based and help keep your digestive tract healthy. Spice it up and get more taste by flavoring your food with spices and herbs rather than fat and salt. Try rosemary or tarragon on your chicken, dill or oregano in your green beans and sage in peas and potatoes.
