like to introduce myself for those of

who don’t know who I am - my name is PC Katie Jarrett and I am the Community Engagement officer for Hadleigh and the many villages in the surrounding area. I transferred to Suffolk last April but prior to that I’d been a Police Officer in Surrey Police for 17 years. I have been in this role now since September and if there was a role made for me this is it. From School inputs, attending fetes, partnership working, attending community meetings and of course the social media posts keep me extremely busy. On the whole this remains a really lovely area but it’s not exempt from crime and disorder. On top of the list is vehicle anti-social behaviour. This is a fairly frequent occurrence involving the car parks around Hadleigh. Meeting in large groups, loud exhausts, performing donuts (skidding in a circle). Primarily just having a complete disregard for the locality and the people effected by their behaviour. My Safer Neighbourhood team colleagues work tirelessly trying to reduce this type of activity. Sadly its not just vehicle ASB we are suffering from but ASB from a group of youngsters in the villages who think its amusing to knock on doors and run away, to congregate in places not meant for them and leaving a pile of rubbish in their wake. Do you know where your children go after school/at night? Perhaps a word to find out what they are doing. My colleagues have been making enquires and visits to see children and parents are imminent.

St Mary’ Church and Hidden Gardens of

Hadleigh – an update

Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh was begun some 10 years ago by the Friends of St Mary’s Church (FOSM), as a way of raising funds to support their charitable aim, the maintenance of the fabric of our ancient parish church. Over the years the event has grown in size and scope, and attendances have been very good, promoting our wonderful town and bringing in visitors. Last year, a record amount was raised, and the money used to preserve the church’s stained glass. But such a huge success comes at a cost in terms of the time and effort the volunteers have to dedicate to creating such a triumphant day, and it would be hardly be fair to expect this level of commitment every year. One issue that a number of people have asked about is the fact that only the Friends benefit from the takings, and people have suggested that other charities might benefit as well.

Of course, as a charity FOSM is not permitted by Charity Commission rules to give money to other charities, and it is therefore only FOSM which can benefit from the sales of programmes. But that doesn’t prevent the people who are kind enough to open their gardens from selling plants or offering tea and cake to visitors to raise money for charities other than FOSM, if they wish to do so. It is worth remembering, though, that St Mary’s has a central place in our community, and that it is used and enjoyed and treasured by many people who are not regular worshippers there (like me, for instance). But the building has some very serious problems which will soon require to be attended to at considerable expense, and FOSM’s charitable aim is central to rectifying them. If the building is unsafe, its many charitable and community activities could not continue.

This year’s event, to be held on 3 June, will not attempt to repeat last year’s triumph, but will be smaller in ambition, and focus more on creating a great day out in Hadleigh than on raising as much money as possible (though that would be nice!). We hope to have at least as many gardens open as in 2022, and we are especially pleased that Benton End will be open on the day – a rare chance for you to see Sir Cedric Morris’s garden as its renovation begins, after years when it was off limits to us all.

So please make a date in your diary, and if you would like to take part by opening your garden, please let us know via info@fosm-hadleigh.co.uk. And just to give you all extra warning, next year’s event is planned to take place on Saturday 1 June 2024.

Hadleigh Art Club

We meet from 2.00 until 4.00 pm on Tuesday afternoons during term time in the Seminar Room above the Library. For those who ask, we try to give advice, guidance and constructive criticism but there is no 'teacher'. We all do art because we enjoy it, not necessarily because we are good at it, we all have pieces that turn out well and others that don't, so please don't worry about your ability, just come along and join in, we're a friendly group.

We charge £2 per session to the cover cost of room hire and tea/coffee. You only pay for the sessions you attend and the first one is free so you are welcome to drop in and see us on a Tuesday afternoon. Annual membership subs are £5 and are due in May.

We have a list of weekly topics and these are only suggestions for anyone who wants ideas on what to do. Some people will be working on one of the topics (not always the current week’s) while others will be working on their own subject. Feel free to choose.

At first glance, this post Second World War view in Hadleigh is difficult to recognise. The view is looking towards Cox Corner, but now, a term that is largely forgotten. This is Calais Street looking towards its junction with the High Street and Bridge Street. The sign shown centrally is the present entrance to Meadows Way. The prominent white building alone survives to this day. At the right is a concrete pillbox, one of the ten pillboxes built from June 1940 to help defend the town which had been identified as a Nodal Point requiring extra defences. There was a further pillbox nearby in Bridge Street by the Iron Bridge.

It was from the latter years of the 20th century which saw the town begin to change with an increasing population, different employment opportunities, and changes to some of its building, as graphically shown in this photograph. The Hadleigh Archive is administered by the Hadleigh Town Council. The Guildhall, Market Place, Hadleigh. IP7 5DN. A team of experienced volunteers look after the Hadleigh Archive and meet on a regular basis to catalogue and transcribe it large number of documents and images. Visitors are welcome by appointment only.

Demand on Practice services is exceptionally high at the moment with the resurgence of ‘flu and Covid. This has been further exacerbated by doctors and other personnel also falling prey to the bugs and unable to work. The Practice is doing its very best to keep up with this high seasonal demand. For everyone’s protection masks must be worn inside the building.

Yet another reminder that appointments can always be booked on line. A number of next day appointments are made available after 7pm the night before. To take advantage of this simple, effective booking procedure new users need to show photo ID at reception and request the log in details. A new check in machine has been installed to replace the previous outdated model. Patients are requested to make use of this to help keep the queuing at Reception to a minimum and free for patients not seeing a doctor. Dr Hill retired at the end of December. She will be greatly missed by colleagues and patients.

There is new outside defibrillator near the front door of the Practice. Free training sessions are available at the Hadleigh Leisure Centre for the next two months. For reservation details visit the VisitHadleigh website or look for posters on display in this magazine or throughout the town.

The PPG and the Practice Partners have both written to James Cartlidge MP expressing their concerns about the plans for a new NHS data base of patients’ health and care records. How is your emotional wellbeing?

When you feel overwhelmed by anger, grief, anxiety, low self-esteem or any other emotion, each day can be daunting, frustrating and exhausting. Emotional wellbeing is closely linked to the way you think, which can feel like it’s out of your control – but it’s not. You can make lifelong changes to how you feel by learning new emotional skills, so you spend less time in turmoil and more time feeling calm and confident.

Few of us are taught good emotional skills but it’s never too late to learn and increase your wellbeing. The first step to making changes is to notice when your thoughts become increasingly anxious or angry, or you notice physical signs - sweaty palms or faster heartbeat for example. When you notice these, say to yourself, ‘stop’. Then take some deep breaths - inhale for 4 seconds, exhale for 6 seconds - do this 6 times.

It sounds too simple to work but research shows that slowing down your breathing when you’re in a highly agitated state improves brain function. This helps your brain to use new skills to develop healthier thinking habits. I provide support while you explore how you feel and develop your emotional toolkit, which builds your resilience, so you bounce back quicker when life pushes your buttons.

Community Primary School

Nursery – Hadleigh Hedgehogs Nursery are planning an Open Day on Saturday 18th March 2023 between 10am – 12.30pm ready for our September intake 2023. If your child’s date of birth is between 1.9.19 –31.8.20 please join us during the morning. We would love to see you there!

You will have the opportunity to look round our Nursery building, outdoor space and particularly our Forest School provision. There are two timeslots available, which you can book by following the link: https://bit.ly/HCPSOpenDay2023, this will take you directly to Eventbrite. Please only book one session time. The session times are: 10.00am – 11.00am & 11.30am – 12.30pm. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday 18th March –Hedgehogs Nursery Team.

Reception – In Reception we welcomed the children back and celebrated New Year and the Christian festival of Epiphany. Pupils built on their knowledge of the Nativity story and found out that the bible says that the Kings arrived in Bethlehem on 6th January (Three King's Day) and gave him gifts.

We worked in classes to make some King’s Bread, a lovely, sweet bread decorated with sugar glazing and fruit. All three reception classes had the opportunity to make crowns and joined together in the afternoon to hear about how Epiphany is celebrated around the world and share their bread.

Music – First Term with our new Music Teacher. In September we welcomed Mr Betts as our new Music Teacher. We have enjoyed some new clubsukulele club, musical theatre club, violin club, music theory club and keyboard club - alongside some old favourites - recorders, choir and performance club. In our curriculum lessons, we have been learning about a variety of different music and musical styles, including rock music, bhangra, sea shanties and even video game music. Year 2 performed a new play about the Great Fire of London, written by Mr Betts. Key Stage 2 enjoyed their Carol Service at St Mary's Church at the end of term.

This term, we have launched 'The Whole School Listening Project'. All children in the school share a listening focus, which changes each half term and are encouraged to consider their musical opinions and share them with others. This half term's listening focus is the film compositions of John Williams. PE – We are delighted to announce that, Hadleigh Community Primary School, have achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2021/22 academic year. The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012. We are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of physical activity and school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our events possible. We believe in the power of physical activity and school sport as a school.

Would you like advice on how to keep driving safely for as long as possible

GrandDriver, run by the Suffolk County Council Road Safety Team, is a scheme for anyone over the age of 60 who currently drives and would like to keep driving for as long as possible. There are two parts to the scheme - a theory workshop, and a driving assessment. The workshop lasts for 3 hours and we discuss how driving has changed, and how to cope with this as we get older, how our health can affect driving, and simple adaptions you can make to ensure your comfort in the car. There is a chance to discuss any concerns you may have about driving; we also have a refresh on the Highway Code and do some hazard perception.

The driving assessment is arranged at a time and place to suit you, takes place in your own car and lasts for around an hour. The trainer will discuss any aspects of the drive that are increasing your risk and offer suggestions and alternatives to reduce your risk. At the end you'll receive a written report outlining all that was discussed. Both the workshops and the driving assessments are currently free of charge to attend. The next workshop is in Hadleigh on 21st March 2023.

If you'd like to book, or would like more information please contact Jane Holland on 01473 341517 or jane.holland@suffolkhighways.org

Six years have passed but the memory of those we love remains with us always.

Thank you, Hadleigh!

On behalf of The Christmas Present Trust, we would like to thank everyone who helped us once again provide a free meal and entertainment on Christmas Day for those in Hadleigh and surrounding areas who could not be with family or friends. We would particularly like to thank the following: Andrew’s Butchers (the turkey was amazing); all those involved with The Ansell Centre; Keith Avis Printers; Hadleigh Cares; Hadleigh Town Council; Brett Valley Lodge; Hadleigh Orchestra; Franey, Rand and Pest House Charities; Kathryn Grandon and Simon Lanning from Babergh District Council; Suffolk Building Society; Bob for his wonderful potatoes; Erivica Cakes; Under The Bridge ukulele group; Ginger Bee; Julia and Neil from Hadleigh Food Bank.

Our volunteers once again have been superb over the three days; decorating the hall, peeling the vegetables, welcoming and helping our guests, collecting guests and delivering meals, serving the food, washing up, tidying and finally packing everything away. We could not manage without them. A final thanks to all those not yet mentioned; those who gave their time, donations, support and good wishes. Hadleigh really shines through all of you. We will be having a get together in the spring to have a catch up with our volunteers and interested parties. We now need to bring more people into the organising of this event so that it can continue for many more years. The date will be announced on the social media pages for Hadleigh and, of course, in the Hadleigh Community News.

The Cock Inn, Hadleigh

Time flies folks and I cannot believe how quickly the monthly Community News issues come around. It seems only a short time ago that we were looking forward to Christmas with many of us discussing the Qatar World Cup Final results, however here we are in February having sung in the new year a month back and looking towards Easter and the spring. The good news is that the days are getting longer!

Sports fans will be looking forward to the Rugby Union 6 Nations tournament which kicks off on Saturday the 4th February with Wales talking on the Irish and England squaring up to rivals Scotland. Italy play France on the 5th. England’s other fixtures see them home to Italy on the 12th, away to Wales on the 25th, home to France on the 11th March with their final game at Lansdown Road on the 19th March. It’s a difficult tournament to call as both England and Wales have replaced their coaches following disappointing Nations League results at the latter end of 2022. With Eddie Jones gone England have put their faith in new coach Steve Borthwick who will link up with Rugby League legend Kevin Sinfield of Leicester Tigers fame. Wales have sought the return of their ex Coach and British & Irish Lions supremo, Warren Gatland to inspire their 2023 ambitions. It’s all to play for. The World Cup kicks off on the 8th September with France taking on The All Blacks. Of course the Premier League restarted on Boxing day and we are now well into the second half of unique season, having suspended matches as a consequence of the 2022 World Cup. At the time of writing this article, Arsenal have moved away from Man City and are eight points clear. Fulham are above Spurs, Chelsea and West Ham and at the bottom, well the relegation race is any three from ten. My ‘next manager to be fired’ list is as follows, Potter at Chelsea, Lampard at Everton and West Ham’s David Moyes. In what order? I’m not sure.

Cricket fans may want to see the Ladies T20 World Cup taking place in South Africa from 10th to 26th February. There is no F1 Grand Prix action until March though NFL fans can watch the Superbowl final on Sunday 12th February. Following a slow start in January with 3 Steps to Heaven playing on Sunday 29th January, we have a great list of February events. David Cass will entertain you on Sunday the 12th February at 3pm followed by the sensational, The Kicks on Saturday 18th at 8.45pm. If you’ve never seen these guys from Suffolk you are missing something great, but please arrive early as it’s a very busy night. If you love The Jam, The Kinks, The Clash, Specials, The Who, you’ll love these. On Sunday 26th Feb we welcome back the great sounds of Buzz, a four piece band playing all you favourites from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Remembering that we stage a monthly Buskers Night every first Tuesday each month. It’s an acoustic evening of song, music and poetry. Take part or sit back, relax and enjoy. There is a pub quiz on the second Tuesday each month. It’s great fun and there are prizes too. The third Tuesday is ‘Open Mic’ Night where you can come and entertain us. It’s hosted by the Bear Witch Project. Look them up on facebook for more information.

The Dixon Dart League is in full throws and its tight at the top. The Cock has three teams taking part with two of them occupying first and second place as I write. Kraken is first with Dawsey’s Jets in secondplace with The Legion Loungers in third place. The Cock Rebels are doing a sterling job at the moment holding up the League. Finally, just to mention the passing of one of our long term customers at The Cock Inn, we offer our sincere condolences to the family of the late John Day. What a wonderful, wonderful man. He will be greatly missed by us all. RIP. Much has been and will be penned about John and his life in Hadleigh, but we just want to say thank you.

Issue 74 (February-March 2023)

A real miscellany of articles fills this issue: there’s more about Holbecks estate; the dean becomes a tour guide; Hadleigh’s peculiar method of proving wills is explained; a new book is reviewed; the history of a Benton Street house is taken back to the early 17th century; and there’s a moan.

Starting with the moan: when other Suffolk district councils reviewed their historical buildings, Babergh withdrew from the project citing the cost as the area has so many historically-interesting properties. This leaves Hadleigh with descriptions written in 1950 that are, in some cases, two-hundred years off the mark. During the last seventy years, so much more has been uncovered not only about dating timber-framing and brickwork but also uses of the buildings. With No.11-13 Bridge Street as an example, ‘Is it time for Hadleigh to be reassessed?’ be-moans the fact that new descriptions of Hadleigh’s listed buildings are very overdue.

‘Holbecks: its park and its people (part 2)’ looks at a period of forty years in the 18th century when the house appeared in the work of artist Thomas Gainsborough; on the first extant map of the whole of Hadleigh; and in the ownership and occupancy of three generations of the Newcome family.

When I first came to Hadleigh in 1968, I purchased a copy of the church guide, then in its 15th edition. The author was Very Revd Carter (rector 1910-1928), a man was very interested in standing archaeology. ‘Dean Carter hosts two archaeology excursions’ traces his steps of the 1920s and identifies locations visited. His route and places visited would make an excellent tour of the town today.

‘Where there’s a will’ explains probate procedures before 1858, when church courts held the prerogative. Being an archepiscopal peculiar, Hadleigh had its own unique system and examples are given of some problems encountered by those people wishing to prove wills. For the period 1400-1858, the whereabouts of just under 700 original Hadleigh wills and contemporary copies have been identified so far. Having recently launched Small Town Duty – Tales of Hadleigh’s Great War, Nigel Crisp now authors a slim booklet entitled Bridge Street Boys’ School, which focuses on the buildings erected in 1853 as a National School. A former pupil, Nigel brings out features that other writers would have missed and sets them in context with quotations from the headmaster’s log book. This monograph is a must for old boys of the school, which closed in 1968, and for visitors to the buildings present form as an events venue.

The Hadleigh Historian is on sale price £4 at Keith Avis Newsagents and The Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer. A one-year subscription (6 issues plus postage) costs £32 from Sue Andrews, 17 Manor Road, Bildeston, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP7 7BG (01449 740673).

We’re Back and Raring to Go!

After a successful Winter Concert (despite some of our lovely members having caught the dreaded cold that seems to be lingering longer than usual) Hadleigh Community Choir have started rehearsals for their next venture. Roll on Summer! We are looking forward to finalising the recording of a choir cd which will be out this year and distributed free of charge to care homes, community groups and individuals who maybe unable to access our concerts, funded by a grant from Hadleigh Town Council. In addition, we will be performing at a Hadleigh Fashion Show on Saturday 29th April, organised by Liz Wilson, and at the wedding of our much cherished Musical Director, Sarah Gallop. Our Summer Concert will be on Saturday 15th July and, as if that wasn’t enough excitement to see us through the current weather, we have been invited to sing at Lullingstone Castle in Kent over the August Bank Holiday.

It’s going to be a busy but exciting few months ahead and we would love you to join us. We invite anyone who likes to sing, to rehearse every Thursday in Hadleigh URC, Market Square (next to the Ansell Centre) from 7.30pm - 9pm. There are no auditions, we will provide you with music and MP3s so you can rehearse at home, and we look forward to welcoming you. On behalf of HCC, I wish you a Happy 2023.

Bob the Gardener’s February thoughts…

“One of the first jobs after leaving Chadacre, an agricultural college near Bury St. Edmunds, was working on a large dairy farm in Saudi Arabia. I worked a two-year stint rearing calves. Desert life was harsh, and with minimal change in the weather from one month to another, it really taught me to appreciate the changing seasons when I returned home to Suffolk. We all have our favourite times of year. Without Winter, we would not appreciate Spring. My point is, as the days gradually lengthen, you may feel that unstoppable urge to get out in your garden and plant stuff! If you are afflicted with this desire, please think of us here at Hollow Trees farm plant Centre…We have great plants at great prices, ready for their new homes!” www.hollowtrees.co.uk

Highways Safety

In December I was able to meet with our Community Liaison Engineer from Suffolk Highways, Melanie Hall. We spent several hours braving the icy conditions whilst walking around the town so that I could show her close up many of our infrastructure issues –‘Time spent on Recce is never wasted!’ This was valuable, as she took away plenty of notes relating to the drainage, on-street parking, and traffic problems that many residents have brought to me by residents, to be resolved or made better.

I am very encouraged by Melanie’s efforts since she was appointed as our Community Liaison Engineer last year. Her administration is second to none and will respond to my requests quickly and in detail. I am confident that she will do her best in having our highways matters addressed within the confines of the resources Highways have at their disposal.

Last month I toured Hadleigh with our Safer Neighbourhood Team Community Engagement Officer, PC Katie Jarrett. Again, I was able to identify to her the many highways safety and hotspots and areas where some anti-social behaviour takes place.

It is reassuring that we have both Katie and a PCSO Jo Adams now showing a greater policing presence on our streets. Katie noted all the key issues I identified to her and she indicated that more speed enforcement teams would be deployed to the town. And it’s that time of year when potholes appear in greater numbers on our roads. Please may I encourage you to report them to Suffolk Highways, using their Highways Faults reporting tool at: https://highwaysreporting.suffolk.gov.uk/

James Cartlidge MP James will be coming to Hadleigh to host an Employment and Careers Fair at the High School later this month and I look forward to meeting him there. I have been informed that many of our local industries and businesses are struggling to recruit dedicated workers and apprentices. I hope to gain a better understanding of these challenges and how the recruiting shortfall might be resolved.

I will also be hosting James for a social evening on 15th February, where he will give a general talk about recent events and answer questions from those attending. If you would like to attend and meet with James, then please contact me as below.

Councillor Surgery I hold my surgery on the third Saturday of the month with the next being at 11:00 on Saturday 18th February 2022 in the anti-room of the Royal British Legion Club, George Street. Hadleigh Vitality

Faye Carfoot Wicks (Resolve Sports Therapy) & Inga Hurren (Kinetic Health) have joined together to create Hadleigh Vitality, a calm quiet space in Maiden Way just off the High Street.

Faye’s career began in sports and exercise over 10 years ago. Her passion started with road cycling which lead her to qualifying in RPM a branded indoor spin class, Body Pump a weight based class and holistic classes of Body Balance and Freestyle Fitness Yoga. This then progressed to qualifying in Soft Tissue Therapy otherwise known as Sports massage where she helped to treat her participants as well as new clients in a hands on approach.

Faye established Resolve Sports Therapy in 2018 and was based from home and Hadleigh leisure Centre. Now she is excited to be offering both Soft Tissue Therapy and relaxation therapy as a complementary treatment in brand new premises. Faye is keen to encourage both the sporty and ‘non’ sporty person to use Soft Tissue Therapy to aid relaxation and to promote healing from injury. Kinetic Health is a new business, but Inga has been a McTimoney chiropractor for 10 years, with much additional training including kinesiology and acupuncture. Chiropractic is a health profession that involves the diagnosis and treatment of many conditions, it looks at the effects of disorders on the function of your nervous system and general health. An assessment of the neuro-musculoskeletal system to identify restrictions, imbalances and dysfunction. She is pleased to be providing Hadleigh with a different approach to healthcare, that can be used to support quality of life and help discover an individual’s potential.

Hadleigh Flower Club

For our December meeting we had a wonderful demonstration from Helen Sheard from Ingatestone, Titled “Festive Spirit”. Her designs were all foam free, and she was very informative about using sustainable materials in the flower industry. She did more modern designs with a great mixture of traditional and more modern colours. She informed us about her journey into flower arranging and how she had travelled the world working with flowers. A very festive feeling had by all. January we had no meeting, but we will be back February 14th 2023, this will be a little different from our usual demonstration where we will be welcoming a speaker from Perrywood Nursery, Tiptree. The Hadleigh United Reformed Church. Arrival 7pm for 7.30pm start. As always, we will look forward to seeing you.

Hadleigh Walkers

Our walk on Saturday 11th Feb will start and end in Hadleigh. We will leave Stonehouse Road car park at 0930 and proceed to Kersey via the Monks Path (for those wanting a shorter walk they can meet the group at the Kersey Bell at 1015). From the Bell we will take a circular walk of 4.5 miles via College Farm, Lindsey Hall, Bridge Farm and back to the Kersey Bell around 1230. After a refreshment break the group will return to Hadleigh via Kersey Vale. The distance of the entire route is around 12 miles and we should be back in Hadleigh around 1430. As usual, we aim to maintain a not-too-demanding 2.5 mph (4 km/hr). Walkers should be aware that any weather is possible in February so strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground will be muddy or rough in places. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site.

For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com or email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com

NEW COMING SOON... Elmsett Community Indoor Market Second Saturdays 11th March to 9th December 10 am - 2 pm Elmsett Village Hall IP7 6PA Refreshments provided by Community Groups

We began the new year with a colourful talk by Chris Whiting on Dahlias. As you can see a man passionate about these showy blooms. He is a national judge and exhibits himself, always coming away with awards.

The amount of Dahlias he grows need vast storage to over winter once lifted from the ground. But even wrapped in layers of fleece he has sadly lost numerous amounts to the frost. So most of us take the chance and leave the tubers in the ground to take their chances. A mulch will give the plants some protection. The painstaking efforts of exhibiting has so many extra hurdles as Chris explained. The warmth in a show marquee can cause the blooms to droop even before judging. Or just days before a show the entire crop are attacked by red spider and a years work destroyed. But that’s gardening!

What ever we grow be it fruit and vegetables or flowers nature can be kind or cruel. That is the constant challenge and gives us satisfaction or disappointment. So let’s plan and plant for 2023. The excitement of new shoots and buds brings the promise of a good year ahead.

Our February meeting is back in the Guildhall , entrance opposite St. Mary’s Church. This months talk will be “Gardening in the Shade” and as always guests are welcome at £4, members £2. The competition is a small posy although I am not sure what will be appearing in the garden, aconites or snowdrops perhaps.

We look forward to welcoming you on February 13th at 7.30 pm. Tea and coffee together with a raffle.-.do join us.

Good Samaritan

As I walk into Hadleigh from Upper Layham, passing Pipkin Lodge and down to Hook Lane, there has been a gentleman working by himself clearing the pathway of earth, mud, fallen branches etc; he has cleared the path so well that the path is now 2 feet wider than it has been for at least 5 years. You can actually see the original path edge. He rakes back the debris and sweeps the path clean. People can now walk along the pavement two-a-breast. Mum's pushing young children in buggy's or prams can now safely stay on the pavement. You no longer have to step into the road to avoid slipping on the mud or to let someone else coming from the opposite direction pass you by.

What an amazing man. He, in my mind, has put the Council to shame. The Council, I believe it is the Highways dept could if they had a mind too, send a couple of younger men to keep the pathway clear. It would take them less time than one elderly gentleman. We are often told it is healthy and good for us to walk, well it isn't if you are in danger of being hit by a car due to having to step into the road. I do not know the gentleman's name but he is most certainly a Good Samaritan.

Parish Council Below are the main matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting of 11 February 2023

• Public Forum

The parishioners present wished to comment on a planning application for five houses on land north of The Street, Upper Layham (see also Planning, below). The applicant said Upper Layham was not a typical hinterland village as a pavement connected it to Hadleigh, allowing teenagers to walk to school. He said the B1070 was a busy road and there were already houses there; people wanted to live in villages and he felt new family homes would be welcomed. However, two parishioners said they had attended a PC meeting some 6 months ago, when the previous application for seven houses had been discussed. They felt the latest proposal did not address any of the previous objections, including possible privacy issues and also light and noise pollution. The proposed development was outside the settlement boundary, and they were aware that Babergh currently had an adequate housing supply. The proposed development would now comprise two-storey houses and screening remained an issue. The footpath was on the other side of the road with limited access; crossing the busy B1070 was difficult. Speeding through the village remained a problem.

• District Council With regard to a question raised at the last meeting concerning the bird of prey used by the local hunt during the bird flu outbreak, Cllr Ward reported that the bird had not been out since restrictions had been introduced. Concerning the measures being taken to protect local rivers and waterways, he said Babergh did not have any powers of enforcement, but would be talking to Anglian Water to make sure they engaged fully with the planning process. There was currently a backlog of repairs to be carried out under the new Tenant Engagement Strategy, but these were now under way. The Town and Parish liaison meetings had been reinstated; the Clerk would attend the next one.

• County Council Discussions on the plans for devolution for Suffolk were in the final stage before going out to public consultation. The proposed council tax increase of 3.99% would mean an increase of £57 for a Band D property. Cllr Hall confirmed that funding was available for remedial work on the footpath from Upper Layham to Hadleigh, which was due to start in March. She had forwarded the PC’s concerns about the ANPR initiative to the police.

• Planning Councillors discussed several planning applications, one of which was for five houses on land north of The Street. Councillors felt the application was very similar to the previous one, for seven dwellings, which had been refused in 2022 by Babergh; none of the objections put forward then had been addressed satisfactorily. There was concern that an increase in the number of vehicles pulling out onto the busy B1070, as well as service and delivery vehicles, would be dangerous. The location was not appropriate as the proposed development was outside the settlement boundary and there was inadequate infrastructure. The PC would object to the application as there were no fundamental changes from the previous proposal.

There were no objections to the application from the Marquis of Cornwallis for planning permission without compliance of conditions. However, the Clerk would seek clarification on whether the false ceiling in the original design response "in order to provide acoustic control and manage space heating" would still be included.

• Proposed diversion of part of Footpath 10 Councillors had no objections to the proposed diversion of part of Layham public footpath no 10 (Rands Farm).

Blacksmith’s Corner Four recycled oak half barrel tubs have been placed near the picnic bench at Blacksmiths Corner in Lower Layham for plants attractive to pollinating insects. Funds for this project were provided by the Layham Events Community Group with some of the proceeds from our Jubilee Fete. The picnic bench, provided by the regulars of the Queen’s Head, is very popular with walkers and cyclists, and has become a meeting point for many people.

Several residents in Lower Layham have undertaken to look after the amenity. In addition hedges around the 30mph signs are kept trimmed back, there is continual litter picking by walkers and an attempt to re-introduce more varied wildflowers into the verges has been started. The small flower bed around the fingerpost pointing to Overbury Hall has been planted with longflowering perennials. Daffodils have been planted around the poles of some road signs, and snowdrops, primroses and purple foxgloves in the verges and the bank behind the picnic bench. Thus far all bulbs and plants have been donated from residents’ gardens, and wildflower seeds provided by the Queen’s Head or purchased by individuals.

Layham Parish Council has agreed to provide a litter bin for this area and arrange for it to be emptied regularly.

Layham Social Club The first meeting of 2023 was an enjoyable and successful afternoon. The quiz, on the theme of New Year, proved very popular and was won by our new champion, Ann. Thanks again to Peter, our quizmaster. A new game, ‘slip of the tongue’, led to a lot of laughter and was enjoyed by all. Refreshments were much appreciated.

Feedback from the previous meeting included a request for expert speakers, a meal out and ideas for games.

The next meeting on February 2 at 2 pm Layham Village Hall is an illustrated talk by renowned local historian, Roger Kennell, on the theme of ‘The Pretty Family, Corset Manufacturers of Hadleigh.’ New members are very welcome and a small charge of £2 per session covers hall hire and refreshments.

Hadleigh Men’s Shed

Hadleigh Men’s Shed was launched in October 2022 and is currently preparing its first workshop space which we have for 12 months. The committee is continuing to work on the setup and we now have a constitution, have filled the roles of chair, secretary and treasurer and a bank account has been opened. It is also now a member of UK Men’s Sheds Association.

permanent home for the shed and explore the options. New members are continuing to join. Some tools and furniture have kindly been donated. Although the setup is still in progress, in January we had our initial session (on chisel sharpening) which was very informative and well attended.

Work and training sessions are currently being held regularly on Wednesday evenings 7pm to 9pm. Activities will expand over time.

Hadleigh Men’s Shed is a relaxed place supporting the local community by providing somewhere to

• meet up and make new friends

• learn new skills

• share expertise

• work on or get help on your own projects

• work on community based projects

St Elizabeth Hospice Fundraising - Our guests in assembly during January were Woolly and Owl-fie from St Elizabeth Hospice. Community Fundraiser Brandon visited the school to explain to the children how their donations would be spent. We raised £778 for the hospice over Christmas which when added to our 2022 fundraising means we have raised a total of £1823 - a fantastic amount for our small school. We thank everyone for their support in helping us to raise such vital funds.

Sow, Grow and Farm Topic

What a fantastic start to our new Geography topic in Kestrel class. The children all came into school dressed as farmers and Mr Pratt brought his tractor into school for the children. He also gave a talk with slides about farming, we learned so much and want to thank Mr Pratt for visiting us! Goldcrest class have been looking at the book ‘Peace at Last’ by Jill Murphy. They used the book to inspire them and have started to make blankets for Mr Bear. They found this quite a challenge, but those of them that have completed the task so far have shown great perseverance!

If you are considering Bildeston Primary as a school for your child, we would welcome a visit. Please phone the office on the number below. We would love to meet you.

Hadleigh Cemetery Natural Burials

Concern about the environment, as well as other factors such as a love of nature and the outdoors, are leading more people to consider natural burials. There is nothing new about natural burial, far from it, as returning a body directly to the earth has been done since time immemorial.

Hadleigh Town Council are therefore pleased to announce that the natural burial meadow at their cemetery on Friars Road, Hadleigh, Suffolk is open for those who wish to have a more environmentally friendly or natural burial choice. There is now also the availability to scatter loved ones’ ashes in the new Rose Garden and another new addition is our Tree of Life (right) where memorial leaves can be added. With this being newly installed, we must bear with growth of shrubs and bushes on the Rose Garden and natural meadow as they will take some time to fully flourish.

For more detailed information about the cemetery and for pricing, please see our website www.hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk or contact us by email on admin@hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk or telephone 01473 823884.

“Top Marks” for Great Cornard Jobs Fair

James Cartlidge MP will be holding a Jobs Fair in Hadleigh on Friday 17th February, which follows hot on the heels of his successful event in Great Cornard last April. The Fair led to a number of uplifting real life success stories: one attendee was offered a job on the spot and started the following Monday. Over 400 people attended last year’s event with more than 50 exhibitors showcasing their vacancies and opportunities - leading to multiple positive outcomes for local people and employers.

“The selection of employers, the mix of advice, jobs and colleges, apprenticeships etc, made for a wide spread of choice and options. It is something that should definitely be held more often, as I don't think people really know what is out there locally. Top marks, that's what community should be about, when is the next one?” – Attendee

“It was good to have the opportunity to find out more about local employers. We found everyone to be very friendly and welcoming. It would be lovely if this event could become a yearly event.” – Attendee
“We found the event very useful and it was a good opportunity to help people understand the job opportunities. From an ‘exhibitor point of view’ I wanted to congratulate you on the organisation and engagement on the day. We were impressed with the number of companies who attended and the steady flow of people looking for employment. We look forward to future events.”

“Our first candidate that came along, I’ve actually employed him” –Hadleigh based manufacturer

I appreciate that cost of living pressures will remain a key concern for most readers. In terms of the Government’s response, we are providing direct support with energy bills but also addressing the underlying cause, i.e., higher inflation, driven by Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine. Regarding support, typical households will have received around £1300 help this winter, through the Energy Price Guarantee (estimated to be worth £900) and £400 Energy Bill Support.

Of course, not every household is ‘typical’, and many South Suffolk constituents use heating oil, but I can confirm we are making available a £200 ‘Alternative Fuel’ payment for such households, which should be paid automatically in February through your electricity supplier. I can also confirm that the Energy Price Guarantee will continue into April, supporting most households with an estimated further benefit of around £500, together with additional cost of living payments for pensioners and those on benefits. As to the bigger picture, the Prime Minister started the new year by announcing his target to halve inflation by the end of the year. This doesn’t mean that in the months ahead the price of things you buy will fall by 50%. Rather, it means that as a Government we will work hard to ensure our ‘fiscal’ policies (i.e., decisions on tax and spend) work as closely as possible with the independent Bank of England to keep a lid on pressure that might otherwise leave prices higher for longer.

In particular, this is about good housekeeping – running our national public finances in a responsible fashion, which is why we’ve had to take difficult decisions on certain taxes, freezing some for the time being. However, we have done this in a compassionate way, ensuring that we keep borrowing down but still providing billions more in funding for the NHS and schools, whilst of course delivering the extensive support with energy bills.

Finally, we need to look to the future and focus anew on local economic growth. Our unemployment rate remains very low – a blessing in such challenging times – and in fact most local businesses are struggling to recruit. This is why on Friday 17th February, I will be holding my next constituency Jobs’ Fair at Hadleigh High School, with over 40 exhibitors including: engineering firms; retail and logistics; public sector employers (e.g., the NHS and police); plus colleges and further education providers.

First hole in one of the year at Stoke by Nayland

2023 was just hours old when Stoke by Nayland saw its first hole in one of the New Year. Playing in the traditional New Year’s Day Scramble, Dan Mills aced the short par3 third hole on the Gainsborough Course. Dan, who lives in Colchester, used a 53 degree gap wedge, pitching the ball directly over the flag where it bounced once and spun back into the holewhat a way to start 2023.

In the Sports Bar after the event Dan rang the bell and shared a bottle of brandy with the members.

Ken’s SESAW

Anyone remember last summer’s heatwaves? Me neither, but there must be some sunlight getting through the clouds, judging by our quirky mascot outside.

A few years ago, a small plastic solar powered Pug was left at our gate. Perhaps a dog lover thought he would bring us more luck than the traditional waving cat. Apparently these Chinese talisman are actually Japanese and not waving but beckoning. The right paw invites good fortune but our Edmond beckons friendship with his left paw, perhaps suggesting true friends are worth more than money?

We are certainly blessed with wonderful people who come in each day to care for the animals awaiting new homes, including dogs like seven year old Buster who cannot see. His sense of space and touch is fantastic but he likes his world to remain static so that he can negotiate it accurately. Buster enjoys his walks, he knows the exact whereabouts of his dinner - and the treat you are offering him! Slowly build up trust, talk to him as you approach so he is not frightened and a rewarding relationship will develop.

Please leave a phone message or email if you would like to meet this special boy, or if you would like to become a volunteer.

New adults are always welcome to help with feeding, walking and cleaning the living quarters. All we ask is commitment to one morning per week. There are lots of grateful animals waiting to meet you, including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.

Rotary Review

Christmas Collections – Another Successful Year

The collections started disappointingly as the icy weather on the first night made it too dangerous for collectors and float alike but with no more cancellations things looked up from there on. Hadleigh residents, especially the children welcomed the float and Father Christmas enthusiastically and with great generosity. Rotary extends a massive THANK YOU to everyone who donated. The House to House produced £1331.34, two days at Morrisons Store produced £499.66 and there were a larger number of donations than usual which made up for the lost collection, producing a final total of £2001.00. All in all, a great result and all monies will go to local charities with an emphasis firstly on those assisting with the winter financial crisis - Hadleigh Food Bank (Fresh Start), Just Food Hadleigh and Surviving Winter in Hadleigh. Further donations will be announced next month. Of course this event does not just happen and as Hadleigh Rotary Club is so small it does rely on a number of friends of Rotary to help with the collections and members would like to recognise and thank profusely the following: Firstly the men in red - Richard Whiting, President, and most of all Steve Grimsey. Steve enjoyed playing the part so much last year that he completed all the House To House rounds and a session at Morrisons. Another great effort, Steve.

Towing duties were shared by Gary Hambling, Steve Blake, George Wyatt and Graham Parker, whilst collectors were Harry Wilkinson, Claire and Annette Coster, Simon and Kerry Carter, George Wyatt, Ron Jenkins, Robert Finch and Rosemary Grimsey assisted by members Glenn Abbassi and Ian Burne - Many, Many Thanks to all of you! Finally the Club is grateful to Hadleigh Bowling Club for housing the float during the collecting period, to Martin Pratt and family for keeping the float at their farm for the rest of the year and to Press Gang for cleaning the Santa outfit.

Christmas Activities:

1 Members, partners and friends celebrated Christmas 2022 with a lunch at the Hintlesham Golf Club. This was a very enjoyable occasion and thanks go to the staff for looking after us so well.

2 A Christmas coffee morning also took place at the Eight Bells. There were mince pies and cake to go with the coffee and again everyone enjoyed themselves - Many thanks Melissa.

3 Moving on to the New Year , the Club’s traditional Champagne Brunch took place at the George, Hintlesham. Again members and partners enjoyed the hospitality of the George and thanks go to all the staff. Club News: Another 4 laptops have been provided for Ukrainian families moving into Hadleigh.

Future Plans: It is hoped to hold more events again this year but it will depend on how much help the Club can find to supplement the small membership. Of course it would be great if help turned in Membership: The Club meets at the Eight Bells on 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month for lunch 12.45pm for 1pm. A coffee morning is held once a month at Cobblers usually on the 1st Tuesday at 11am. If you would like to attend one of these or find out more about your local Rotary Club please contact David 01473 827226.

Members wish all readers a Very Happy New Year

Happy New Year

On behalf of everyone at Hadleigh Choral Society we wish all our friends and supporters a happy and healthy 2023. Despite the headlines and financial pressures there is still so much to be thankful for and the choir are back in rehearsals and extend a warm welcome to any new members. Singing really is good for our wellbeing and can give us a boost, particularly during the winter months.

Plans are well underway for our Spring concert which will be held on Saturday 25th March at St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh. The programme will include Puccini: Messa di Gloria and Faure: Cantique de Jean Racine and Requiem. If you are thinking of joining us, we meet on Tuesday evenings, 7.30-9.30pm at The Ansell Centre, Market Place, Hadleigh throughout term time. We don't hold auditions, but some knowledge of music and an ability to read music is definitely an advantage. The most important thing is a commitment to practice and regular attendance. We’re a friendly bunch, led by our Musical Director, Christopher Phelps, and a committee made up of volunteers. If you'd like to give us a try, do come along to a couple of rehearsals and see if it's for you. Turning to Summer, it’s incredible to think that our Summer concert in 2022 celebrated the Platinum Jubilee of our late Queen Elizabeth II and this year the country and commonwealth will have united for the coronation of King Charles III. Make a note in your diary for our Summer concert which will be on Saturday 17th June again at St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh. Finally, an appeal for sponsorship. If you are a local business who appreciates the importance of community and the need to support groups such as the Hadleigh Choral Society that provide company, friendship and support to so many residents of our town, please get in touch.

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre

Looking back at previous blogs for February I see masks everywhere.

I like this picture of a rider trying out the pad on my back, with two masked helpers giving him confidence. I’m there gently giving his muscles a workout and strengthening his core, but he won’t know that! Its my secret which I share with all the live ponies who work here. We have been lucky to engage the help of Abi Sinclair to help the team out with expert horse care whilst Lyn takes some time off. Welcome, Abi, even though Babs and I don’t need your help at all, we hear the herd is so glad you are here. As usual for February we are muddy and wet, but the super big sitting room cum kitchen is sheltering the human volunteers from the wort of the weather. There’s lots to look forward to in 2023: we shall reinstate the Shelley Show; the Hadleigh Show will sport our amazing cakes and plant tent; the volunteers will continue to stimulate and educate the riders and to cap it all, Anglican Water will be driving a large pipe through Shelly and there will be attendant disruption! Exciting. Mid. February will see our school age riders taking half term off, so have fun and keep well!

An update from the Neighbourhood Plan

Thank you to all those who contributed to the Transport Survey to help inform the Neighbourhood Plan. There were 347 individual completed responses which is a great response at about 4% of the population of Hadleigh. The draft report for the study should be reviewed at the end of January and the final issued within a couple of weeks into February. The final study will be available to view on the Town Council’s website midFebruary. In other Neighbourhood Plan news, the team working on it have conducted a green space audit of the town and made suggestions for areas to be designated as Local Green Spaces which then have special protection against development. For more information on Local Green Space Designations visit the Neighbourhood Plan page on the Town Council’s website. We are looking for your feedback on these proposals so keep an eye out on the website, Facebook page and town noticeboards for when public consultations will be happening in February.

Recruitment Panel Review Report - Consideration of Recommendations and Additional Actions Arising

Proposed by Councillor Knock, seconded by Councillor Wiltshire it was agreed that following the receipt of the Recruitment Panel Review Report to submit the following questions to the Recruitment Process Review Panel: Under what authority or standing order did the Chair of the previous meeting use to refuse to accept questions?

Did the Review Panel look at CV’s or application forms as part of the process? Did the Review Panel have any dialogue with any of the candidates? Did the Review Panel review the videos?

Did the Review Panel look into how consent for the recordings was obtained and what records there were of that and what conclusion did they come to? The report says the prejudice was negated by the successful candidate apparently having a military background. On what basis did they come to conclude that the interview panel was aware of that experience, if they were aware how would this negate the expressed opinions?

Have any members of the original interview panel considered resigning or stepping down from their roles on the Staffing Sub-committee?

Question 7 was not answered – could we have the answer to that question?

If the answer is no should the Council take legal advice on the fact that it was recorded without consent.

Was any inappropriate behaviour displayed by any Candidates? We know there was, if any inappropriate behaviour displayed how was this behaviour challenged?

How did the Review Panel know the applicant was an Armed Forces veteran?

The Review Panel said that steps had been taken to make sure this never happens again but the Councillor who showed bias/discrimination is still on the Staffing Sub-committee, how will the process ensure this won’t happen ever again?

Additional Recommendation:

To include an external expert in the interview process going forward, who would be an expert in HR and not to conduct interview but to help steer interviewers to avoid any pitfalls.

A recorded vote was requested 7 For (Councillors Beggerow, Knock, McLeod, Monks, Pryor, Roberts and Wiltshire), 3 Against (Councillors Wilson, Schleip and Shearly-Sanders), 1 Abstain (Councillor Gower)

Councillor Wiltshire raised a point of order – why did members of the Recruitment Process Review Panel not abstain or declare an interest?

The Chair advised that Councillors of the Review Panel did not need to declare an interest in this item.

There is a piece about the event in the November Hadleigh Community News and then in the new year, more advertising and finalisation of the event organisation will be completed.

The other project, Beatz Fest, has unfortunately not progressed. The person who submitted the idea has not been in communication with us and so regrettably the project has not been able to be initiated. HADs returns with another Panto for its 102nd year!

Hadleigh Amateur Dramatics Society (HADS) is one of the oldest running drama society’s in Suffolk and is still going strong. This year’s panto - Peter Pan and the Pesky Pirates, will be performed at Elmsett Village Hall on February 16th, 17th and twice on 18th and has been written by local couple Trevor and Sarah-Jane Clarke. Trevor, who is the HADS current chairman says: “HADS is a community group that brings so many different people together and this year over 50% of our cast is made up of new young actors, some of whom have not acted before, but you would never know it! They are a very talented bunch, and we are lucky to have them performing for us this year”.

HADS is run by a committee of dedicated members including Jo (Finance Officer), Russell (Deputy Chairman), Sophie (Safeguarding Officer), as well as Sian, Paul, Jim and Ben who are also on the committee. Our dedicated sound and light crew led by Andrew and Jen our backstage manager - all of whom give up their time for free to bring these pantos to life. The shows are financed by kind donations, sponsorships and by the money from ticket sales, as each year the panto can cost upwards of £4000 to produce. Sarah-Jane Clarke, who has written or co-written four pantos for HADS and is usually behind the scenes helping, says: “It is important to understand the benefit of these types of community groups, we work from September to February each year, coming together every Sunday without fail for rehearsals, to make something special for everyone involved, whether it is the actors, stage crews, the committee members and, of course, the audience. We have had younger members, who have since left, come back to tell us what a massive impact HADS had on their confidence and mental health and how it helped them gain the confidence to go on to greater things. Everyone is welcome, we are an inclusive society and try to accommodate everyone who wants to join’

This year’s panto - Peter Pan and the Pesky Pirates, is based on the beloved Peter Pan story, but has a few unexpected and modern twists, turns, and possibly BANGS! But I don’t want to give away too much!

Tickets are available at Keith Avis Newsagents and online at www.hads.webs.com Performs are at 7.30pm on 16th, 17th & 18th and 2pm matinee on 18th. Tickets are £10 for Adults and £7 for under 16s

Hadleigh Elderly Peoples Welfare Committee Christmas Voucher Scheme

As usual some 450 vouchers were distributed to the over 70s in Hadleigh valued this time at £14 per person. The Committee decided to increase the payment by more than usual for this year only to help with the current financial crisis. The vouchers have been mainly funded by the Christmas Appeal which has again been very successful. The Committee would like to recognise and thank very much indeed those businesses and organisations who gave so generously. The total sum raised was a magnificent £4524.0.00 and the following contributed:

Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association, Franey, Rand and Pest House Charities, Aldham Common Charity, Hadleigh Thrift Shop, Jim Lawrence, Plant Parts Ltd., Skar Precision Mouldings Ltd, Hadleigh Castings Ltd, Abacus Fire and Security Ltd., Wincer Kievenaar Ltd., French Complexion, Frost and Partners, Dunstone Optometry, Avis Newsprint, Andrews Butchers, Brett Valley Lodge No. 9479, Walter Wright. Recipients have expressed their grateful thanks for the vouchers which have been appreciated more than ever this Christmas.

The Committee is extremely grateful to all the shops which have accepted the vouchers and to the loyal team of distributors who work so hard to deliver the vouchers personally. As always the backing of the Hadleigh Town Council is much appreciated and the Committee’s sincere thanks goes to everyone who has been involved this time.

Finally, anyone who has lived in Hadleigh for 6 months or more, will be aged 70 this year or who has attained the age of 70 but not received a voucher previously and would like one should write, giving name, address, date of birth and time lived in Hadleigh to:

4.5St Marys Church In line with lowering the carbon footprint, all bulbs are being changed to LEDs and the use of solar panels is under discussion. A fire alarm system is being researched for the safety of bellringers. Information is out for the required consultations (42 days) before approval to start work on the refurbishment of the Vestry is made. Re Phase 1 of the overall renewal plan, St Mary’s Ely has already undertaken the work - underfloor heating - so some of the renewal group will visit this week to save reinventing the wheel. They have very kindly offered help with all information needed, including fundraising suggestions. St Mary’s supports FIND and encourages the community to give to the local foodbank trolleys in Morrisons.

Samples of materials will be taken to food banks, pop-ups, Thrift shop, Café Church at St Mary’s, HPL etc for people to see what is available and discuss what they might need. Distributors will not enter homes so basic DIY knowledge and tools will be needed by recipients to fix the materials. A thermal imaging camera has been available from Mick Fraser (SCC) to identify heat-loss areas. A talk on bats is taking place at Benton End on 26 January. Parking is very limited – anyone wishing to attend should email hadleigh.heat@hotmail.com

Glenn’s Trek through Africa

Since I wrote in March 2022 when I had only covered 14% of the virtual longest road in the world, by the end of 2022 I was 64% of the way, and had walked 4,800 miles in the year. Having virtually trekked through Africa, I went into Israel, Syria, and then Turkey. On New Year's Eve I arrived in the Armenian capital of Yerevan (Vic!) and as I write this I am now in Azerbaijan. Then it's Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and eventually Russia.

For intrepid walkers who might dispute an average of 12 miles a day, I have screenshots of the 60 weeks from when I started in early November 2021. I do set off very early, usually before 6.00am, and walk between 5 and 6 miles before 8.00am.

Our Accelerated Reading Scheme is Launched The start of the Spring Term has seen us launch our Accelerated Reading Scheme. This scheme helps the children read at their appropriate level and when ready they can progress to the next stage. It is designed to help with their understanding of the story and they take a short quiz each time they finish a book. We are looking forward to the positive results this scheme will bring to all aspects of learning within our school.

Sammy the Sea Squirt! Suffolk Mind in partnership with Suffolk County Council visited our school to deliver a yoga-based activity session to our younger children in Hedgehogs and Otters Class. The children took part in breathing activities based on the story ‘Sammy the Sea Squirt’ to help bring to life the positive links between movement and mental health. All the children received a copy of the book to enjoy at home and remind them of the techniques learned to help them keep calm.

Suffolk Energy from Waste

Facility

Visit Our Eco Council are discussing how we can improve as an Eco School and coming up with initiatives and changes we can make, both big and small throughout the school to reduce the amount of waste we generate. To enhance the children’s understanding of what happens to our waste in Suffolk, Badgers and Owls Class visited the Suffolk EFW Facility at Great Blakenham. They learned and saw how our domestic waste is turned into electricity and how the by-products of this process are used in other industries. The children were able to take part in interactive tasks to show how much energy we needed throughout the day and how they can do their part to reduce the waste they create. They made pledges to help reduce waste such as, using reusable drinks bottles and not using plastic bags. If you get the opportunity, it is worth a visit!

Pantomime Time After all the fun leading up to Christmas, we decided to have an enriching activity in January when we all went to see the Rock and Roll Pantomime – Goldilocks and the Three Bears at the New Wolsey Theatre. It was a lovely experience for the children and a chance for them to engage in live theatre together with their friends.

HEAT: What we are doing in

Many of us worry about the changes we see happening around us. The unpredictable weather extremes, the loss of wildlife and humanity’s continued dependence on fossil fuels. Doing nothing no longer feels an option.

Hadleigh Environmental Action Group (HEAT) is all about starting local, getting together with others to do something, and hopefully having fun at the same time. Here are the things we are doing this year that anyone can get involved in:

•Helping to monitor and look after our River Brett

•Planting trees and looking after wildlife on a local farm and in Hadleigh’s nature reserves

•Creating a new green wildlife corridor through Hadleigh

•Joining a campaign to improve home insulation

•Running Forest School days and activities for children and families

•Looking after bats and building bat boxes with Benton End

•Running events for children and families

•Promoting sustainable personal items such as nappies and sanitary wear

•We also have speakers and discussions throughout the year

If you’d like to join the 200 or so other people who support HEAT and receive our regular updates just email us at hadleigh.heat@hotmail.com or visit our website www.hadleighheat.org

Hadleigh Women’s Institute

At our meeting on the 17th January we welcomed four new members and two 'tasters' and enjoyed a January CheerUp in lieu of the cancelled Christmas get-together. Before settling down to the scrumptious shared feast of food and wine or apple juice (as usual an enormous variety of delicious donated dishes), we considered four Resolutions for the annual campaign of the National Federation.

These 'Resolutions' are the product of consultation throughout the UK. Every WI group can submit a suggestion, which goes to their regional office (Federation). The 69 Federations in the UK submit titles to the National Federatiion from which is selected four possibles for the current campaign. It is not generally known that the WI is a pressure group and regularly lobbies Parliament. The four chosen this year from 43 submissions are related to 'saving water', 'the lives of women tea workers', 'on line gambling harm' and 'clean rivers for people and wildlife'. All members present at our meeting resulted in choosing the resolution relating to clean rivers (there was equal voting between this and the concern about on line gambling), this result is being passed on to our local Federation.

The Ambling group is growing - meet at 10.30am on 1st February outside the library (the first Wednesday) when we will take a gentle ramble around the Layham area of Hadleigh, or a quick walk to a local coffee shop should the weather be unfriendly. Bookworms on the fourth Thursday have read Raynor Winn's The Salt Path and The Wild Silence. The next book will be an as yet identified thriller for a complete change of subject. The thriving Lunch Bunch on 9th February (the second Thursday) look forward to meeting up at The Chestnut Tree Farm restaurant in Pinewood.

The next meeting is at 7.30pm on 21st February (the third Tuesday) in the seminar room of the library when Lucy Skellorn will update us on the development of the Benton End Project.

If you think you might like to join the group, contact either the secretary Glenn Abbassi on 07870 312409 or the President Sheila Webb 01473 827554 to come for a 'taster' evening when we will arrange to welcome you.

Fidelis Christmas Meeting

A much enjoyed Christmas meeting was held at Hintlesham hall golf club with good company and good food. After so much food and celebrations we are back down to earth in January with some much needed Pilates.

Our friendly ladies group meets on the 4th Thursday afternoon each month, if you are interested in giving us a try, please contact me on lesleycook0653@gmail.com.

2023

First of all, Happy New Year from all at Hadleigh Cricket Club! We go in to 2023 with several changes, both on and off the pitch.

Starting from the top, we say farewell to our chairman of 7 years, Dave Mann. Dave was a fantastic Chairman over seven years in the role, preceded by a further seven years as Vice-Chair. He played a key role in developing the club during this time, fostering close relationships with key stakeholders in Suffolk cricket, ensuring that funding opportunities were maximised and we are grateful for his dedication, hard work and commitment. At the same time, we welcomed our new Chair, Simon Gladwell, and Vice-Chair Tony Stenning. Both will bring a wealth of both cricket and commercial experience to the running of the club.

On the field, Dominic Manthorpe takes the reins as first team captain, and Arran Tampion steps up to second team captain. The Academy and Ladies XI captains, David Levitt and Sharon Elliott remain in post. We are looking for a creative, enthusiastic and dedicated person to develop our social media presence. Cricket knowledge is not essential, and we have a fantastic graduate videographer who is currently interning at Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park who would be delighted to ‘mentor’ this individual.

If you want to find out more, get in touch with us by emailing Simon Manthorpe headcoach@hadleighcricketclub.com

If you have driven or walked past the ground over the past few weeks, I’m sure that you have also noticed another big change to the club… the construction of our brand new decking area. Support from our sponsors has been invaluable, with Hadleigh Tyre Group, Hevey Building Supplies (Sudbury) and ATS Skip Hire all helping us with either funding, materials or free services. We are very grateful for their continued support, and also for the hard work of Lee at Kingswood in the construction. The decking will enhance our facilities, providing additional seating for spectators, and we look forward to spending a sunny afternoon there with something cold and refreshing from the bar!

Home Library Service

Many people struggle to get to their library for various reasons, perhaps because they have a disability or mobility issue. The Home Library service is there for anyone who loves to read but can’t get to the library.

The Home Library Service is run by volunteers who pick up books, audio books or DVDs from the library and take them to customers in their own home. The service provides a lifeline for many older and disabled people across Suffolk who also benefit from the regular social interaction too. Volunteers can visit private homes or care homes and operate within COVID guidelines to keep everyone safe. All our volunteers have been through an application, reference and DBS checking process and a training programme.

If you or a relative would benefit from the service, you can contact your local library who can pass the details onto their volunteers or you can also email hls@suffolklibraries.co.uk or call 01473 351249 (during normal office hours).

Winter cycling with Hadleigh Cycling Club

Whilst it is tempting to keep the bike in the shed until the Spring or join a spin class, it can be fun and exhilarating to ride outdoors over the Winter. HCC cyclists will be out and about weather permitting.

Here are a few handy tips for winter riding:

1Check the weather. Beware of ice so avoid early mornings and late afternoons if it is forecast.

2Make sure you’ve got a decent windproof jacket and gloves and waterproofs if showers are expected.

3You’ll need a set of lights if you’re out early doors or after 4pm. Don’t buy the cheapest.

4Mudguards are handy if you’re riding in a group.

5There are tyres which are virtually puncture-proof and they are definitely worth the investment.

6Get your bike serviced. And remember to protect yourself at all times.

Hadleigh CC members participated in races at the UCI World Masters CycloCross Championship 2022 held at the Suffolk Showground in December including our Treasurer Nick Webber and our Juniors, Evie, Aaron, Charlie and Ciaran.

The Club runs a social ride on Sundays usually starting at 9.00am from The George and there is a café stop. Currently, we’re also running regular rides on Fridays (women).

The rides are weather dependant so, if in doubt, check our Facebook page @hadleighcyclingclub Twitter @HadleighCycling or www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk

Hadleigh

Hadleigh Hares proudly donned their Red Vests to compete against the other Clubs in Suffolk in the Annual County Cross Country Championships, which made a welcome return to The Royal Hospital School Holbrook after many years on Sunday 8th January 2023. First race of the day at 11.30 was Under 11 Boys with Josh Arnold (12th) and Felix Clover (20th) running strongly in an event dominated by Woodbridge School. Next up were the Under 11 Girls, with Isla Spraggons (14th) and Ella Baalham (18th) taking part.

U13 Boys Alex Collins (2nd) and Finley Gunning (17th) Alex’s finish earnt him a place in the London Mini Marathon and their combined effort meant that they won 2nd Team Prize - well done boys! Lucy Clover and Daniel Cooper then ran bravely in the U13 Girls and U15 Boys Races.

Then on to the Senior Races - 9 Men took on the 2 and a half lap course, First to finish was Aiden Bell (17th) followed by John Jousiffe (44th) Andy Turner (46th) Adam Chamberlain (87th) Joel Bamsey (124th) Ryan McNeill (129th) Steve Hunt(135th) Stuart Hunt (141st) and Andrew Stewart (145th).

Finally, last and certainly not least, the final race of the day was the Ladies, with a super showing of 12 Hares taking part. Rachel Bosworth lead the team in (34th) hotly pursued by Crystal Murray (35th) Elaine Turner (37th) and Vicky Tapp (44th) Belinda Godbold (52nd) Maria Ward (59th) Kay Oxford(60th) Natalie Hooper(64th) Geraldine Suckling (73rd) Kitty Rigby(76th) Fiona Holland(79th) and Deb Stewart (83rd). Special mention to Belinda who was First Lady in her age group.

Both the Mens and Ladies teams were 9th in the Team rankings, a great achievement given the size of Hadleigh compared to other Suffolk towns. Everyone left the event having met (and enjoyed!) the usual challenges of Mud, Rain, Wind, Hills and more rain, having had a good day of team work and camaraderie.
